I hate that whenever there's a gay ship, people immediately het-ify it. people are so obsessed with making one the "man" and one the "woman" when that's completely unnecessary, because they are both the man or the woman. It's extremely annoying. these people will completely mischaracterize a character to fit into their stupid little het roles they force on them.

for example, you don't need to make one man the "wife" and feminized him to the extreme and fit him in a traditional "woman" role so the other man can be the big strong masculine manly man. they can both be masculine or both be feminine or both be both at the same time! they do NOT need to be gendered opposites to fit het roles. crazy, I know! it's like no one considers it a possibility! or sees how good it can be to have them be equals without gendered nonsense.

when there's a gay relationship, you have the perfect opportunity for the couple to stand on equal ground. they get to be equals who are just as strong and just as soft as each other. there's no faulty power dynamics where one is above the other (because let's face it, society unfortunately deems masculinity > femininity). one doesn't need to protect the other. they can protect themsleves, fight aide by side as equals. one doesn't do all the housework. they share that duty equally. one isn't weak and pretty, while they other strong and manly. they both are strong and pretty, or masculine and weak at the same time.

equal relationships are amazing and need to be explored more and appreciated. there can be more understanding and working together. i'm bad at explaining what I mean, but I prefer these equal relationships over forcing them into opposite roles to mirror het relationships, which are usually extremely unbalanced and unequal. especially because these not het relationships! so why must they look like one? they can and should look different! so why does literally every shipper and writer out there make them so het coded?

I don't understand why people do this. do they actually believe all romantic relationships must mimic het ones to exist and thrive and purposely force that on them? or have they genuinely just not fathamed that they can be different and dont need to follow the expected het standards?

I wonder, it feels like no one actually knows how non-het relationships are meant to be and how they could work, since het ones are always forced down our throats since birth. it becomes The Standard that everyone thinks they must follow. maybe it's all people know since they don't see any other possibilities. their preferred dynamics for their ships are what we are taught and nothing different, because they don't know it can be different. i also think people might be obsessed with that whole "opposites attract" trope. but that opposite doesn't have to be the traditional het-fueld feminine vs masculine or wife vs husband characteristics. it can be other personality things like one is loud and one is quiet, one is dumb and one is overly smart, one is rich and one poor, etc. it doesn't have to be masculine vs feminine!

Both Teru and Ritsu are very competitive, which you can see since their first interaction Ritsu, powertripping, looking to "test" his limits, tries to intimidate Teru, to assert his superiority Unfortunately, this is Teru he's up against, so he fails, and then Teru retaliates In the end, Teru comes out on top of their little ego battle Cause that's all it really is, Ritsu perceives himself as invincible as of right now, and Teru believes that two weeks was enough time for him to fully integrate Mob's philosophy into his belief system, thus giving him the right to preach to fellow middle schoolers Now, their competitiveness doesn't extend only to one another, they both view their relationship with Mob through this lens of competition. Which makes sense, theyre both keenly aware of how strong Mob is and have been deeply affected by the gap in their abilities Ritsu begins by fearing Mob due to The Incident, realizing later on that one of the reasons he wanted psychic powers so badly was so he could have a way to counterattack if the worst happened On the other hand, the incomprehensible size of Mob's power didnt awaken fear within Teru, but admiration Well. It was probably fear as well for those few minutes that he was floating in the sky But instead of fearing Mob, Teru begins to see him as an example to follow Mob is somebody who taught him a lesson, who is much more powerful than him yet is kind and forgiving That's what Mob becomes. A standard to achieve, a role model to follow

Ritsu, too, views Mob as a standard, as a goal, although much earlier than Teru does. In spite of not having powers, he views them as something normal, ordinary. It doesn't make sense to him while they're so far out of reach. Even once he gains powers, Mobs influence on him doesn't waver. Instead of psychic powers, Ritsu chases Mobs conviction and dedication to his goal, to living the life he wants to live

Ultimately, both Ritsu and Teru come to the same conclusion: that Mob isnt scary nor perfect, that he isn't what either one of them perceives him to be, he isnt a paragon of good nor evil Mob is as messy, complicated, and angry as the rest of them. And that's okay.

In the end, both of them make a statement to Mob, declaring themselves on equal footing with him

(Special mention to Teru being Mobs self-proclaimed rival as he fights "Shigeo") And they both fall back on this idea of competing with Mob; gone is the fear and admiration; both of them have gotten to a place where they can actually see Mob for who he is Where Mob isn't idolized or feared, where he's somewhere in reach of a helping hand.

double posting but i HAVE to get this conversation i had with one of my friends last night out into jrwiblr

listen. we all like /r ships!! or at least tolerate them. but. god damnit i prioritize good friendship building

immediately riptide comes to mind because yeah i do love fnc romantically but god damnit theyre best friends. these two things can coexist, but if i had to choose, id absolutely hope they had a fucking banger friendship.

i think i treasure just albatrios friendship alltogether. im a jay ferin enjoyer (and if you arent youre WRONG) and i fucking adore her dynamic with these two equally loser guys. her dynamic with chip means so much to me (it reminds me of me and my found sibling. albatrio is us and our other one fr fr!!!) and im SO tired of people sleeping on it. im also a navyseal enjoyer 💪💪 /p or /r

and i wanna say that a lot of fandoms minimize characters in ships to just that: part of a ship. i fucking hate it

people act like lizzie has no character outside of pistolwhip. i love her cringefail strong lady autism. cocme on.

this is a problem i see with a lot of fandoms, not just jrwi, and tumblr does their best to avoid doing this but i still!!1!! god

every jrwi character in any campaign does have a distinct personality by themselves, and im always going to advocate for people to see it. these characters are all fucking masterfully written and played. im so glad jrwi characters dont just have two personality traits and call it a day (though ive seen a lot of people say this about them which??? where is that coming from).

i mean, i just really prefer a ship to Add to a character than Be their character. (tangent: i am a horror movie fan. ive watched tons of slashers. if you write horror. do not make this mistake. do not be final destination 3.) any relationship between characters, friendly, romantic, hostile, anything. should not be their only personality trait. and jrwi does this shit perfectly

i love every character individually first, but its hard to not love them as groups aswell. i mean for fucks sakes the campaigns DEPEND on them being teams because its fucking dnd, but its the characters in a vacuum that really makes me love them.

i dont just love timothy rand for being part of nbr. i love him because hes a paranoid, stupid autism boy who is so hung up on his past it literally fucking tries to kill him. i love dakota cole because he wants to believe the world is naturally good, because he wants people to have a chance, and because hes so fucking relatable to an autistic audience. i love peter sqloint because hes a nerdy guy collecting rocks and his “only character motivation” was finding a log for his pet lizard. i love jay ferin because shes carving her own path, learning to live for others instead of survive, and fighting for what she really fucking believes in.

this even applies to npcs. every fucking jrwi character ive seen so far is endearing as hell and thats so important to me. theyre all distinct in their own ways and its taking over my brain.

the thing about. okay so when i first got into dr i was like ‘i think i prefer an outcome where they ultimately cant wake the other ten members of their class and its just the five survivors because then the deaths meant something yknow’ and while i still think that that kind of thing has. yknow. merit and value. i have actually come around to preferring them being able to do it. with one massive caveat.

it takes forever.

it takes at least a year and a half, two years maybe, before they (lets be real, hajime) even gain the knowledge of the system, work out its quirks, beef up its security and tech, connect it to enough power, and build the proper technology to manage something like this, and even then, each person is going to need a unique plan of action. its going to take ages. i think its best if they start from the first death through the last, which has the added benefit of waking the impostor first and gaining a good moral compass and grounding presence. but… i mean. its almost two years before they even manage the first dive into their brain. two years of living alone, just the five of them, of building each other up of building a dynamic, one that works, and of changing and growing because they have no other choice.

so when it comes down to them actually attempting to wake the first person… theres some anxiety. theres some worry. theres a lot of ‘this is going to radically alter how we relate to each other and everyone else’. theres a lot of ‘this is going to make things weird’. theres a lot of ‘theyre not going to understand a lot of things at first not only because its been two years since we all went under and everything has changed in that time but also because the five of us have a fundamentally different relationship now with each other than we will have with anyone else we wake up. thats going to cause conflict’.

and i dont even necessarily mean that in a romantic relationship sense (though if you know me you know im deeply unwell about kuzuhina and also an absolute sucker for polycule shit so yeah i do also kinda mean it in that way), but just that their bond is so strong. living alone on an island in the middle of nowhere for two years with just four other people will do that. they know each other in fundamental ways that the others may never manage. fuyuhiko may get peko back, but her relationship with him will never be the one he has with hajime, or akane, or kazuichi or sonia. sonia will get gundham back, but despite them definitely regaining their romantic relationship (after an adjustment period, of course), there will be an odd dissonance in how well hajime and akane know her in ways gundham doesnt. akane will get nekomaru back in her life. but he will never be the person she goes to with the things she goes to hajime with.

this isnt necessarily entirely negative, of course. relationships are always going to be different with different people because theyre. yknow. different people. but i think theres going to be a period of time, maybe even the rest of their lives, where the ten sleepers in the vault will understand, intrinsically, that the relationship the five survivors has is never going to be fully understood, and will always be special and different from what they all have as a group.

hajime, fuyuhiko, kazuichi, akane, and sonia all faced arguably the hardest parts of the healing process, the stumbling blindly with no hand to hold except the others with an equal lack of sight, together, and that. does things. to a relationship.

they will all manage the healing process, and they will all struggle through it. but never in the same way those five did.

Heyo spy ! and YEAHHHHH the rivals !!!! (at least in my hc)

Their relationship started off... a little rocky to say the least. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't the cheating that threw don off (after all, he brings a rose and perfume into the ring), but rather aran's (in don's opinion) ridiculous red hairdo and green shorts that make him look like a christmas ornament. Aran on the other hand found Don ridiculously pompous and vain, which made him all the more fun to prank.

So how'd they start to get along? Well... one day when Don decides enough is enough, he decides to take revenge. He pranks aran back in the best way he knows how, by replacing his conditioner with green hair dye, so aran's hair turns green. Aran, instead of becoming angry, just... laughs. and laugh and laugh and laughs. He didn't think a scrawny little dick like Don had it in him to prank him back, and invites him for a pint. Don in turn, becomes incredibly flustered, and goes ''what??? sure??? i guess???'', thinking he agreed to a fight. Aran pats him on the back and leaves. After he comes to his senses and learns what ''a pint'' means, he screams internally ''WHAT DID I JUST AGREE TO?!?!?!''

So how does their outing go? Well, Don is obviously nervous as hell, thinking he walked into a death trap, but he surprisingly enjoyed himself a lot! and consequentially, started to appreciate someone outside of the major circuit reaching out to him (because after all, who doesn't want to go out with the GREAT don flamenco???). It doesn't happen as often, since Don tends to come off rather strong to others, which he doesn't realize. Aran in turn, CAN handle that part of his personality, and found him to be great fun.

It's essentially a slow burn, enemies to lovers relationship going from ''we're equal fighters and I Hate you'' to ''we're equal fighters with mutual respect for one another'' to ''Shit i think i like this asshole''

If it wasn't obvious yet, they're both VERY competitive. It's the best way they connect, but also occasionally a source of conflict. Don envies Aran for not having to train as much and relying much more on his luck. Aran meanwhile Loves pushing this guy's buttons which is just the way he shows affection, but it can sometimes backfire.

Theyre ALL for PDA, the more mushy n embarrassing the better. They'll usually try to one-up eachother. And if anyone tries to bother them ab it? Aran's got Don covered.

Complete polar opposites in sleep wear. Aran wears boxer shorts and a tanktop, whereas Don wears red silk pajamas with a sleeping mask and a bonnet.

Don likes to do Aran's hair. Don's love language in general is physical intimacy and taking care of his loved ones. Aran will never admit it to anyone except Don, but he enjoys it immensely. Makes him feel very loved.

They WILL dominate the dance floor together every time they're at the club. In turn, they also teach other their native dances !

Aran likes to prank Don with his toupee a lot and it gets Don Everytime. One time, he pretended the toupee was a rat and screamed for Don's help.

ahem. i would like to share my opinion of the brief mary content we have received lately.

shea getting sexualized and i hate it.

as a woman who likes wearing bras as if theyre crop tops and such, i dont think it's inherently sexual for a character to. but, its just the fact that mary has never until recently (unless im failing to recall like 1-2 panels) worn anything but baggy clothes and it icks me that she suddenly is and during the point she is, we get a close up of her tits. it doesnt feel like a coincidence and maybe it bothers me more than it should but i pray this isnt a slippery slope and ptj wont end up ruining her too.

I completely agree though. The latest panels that she was in (that I can recall) are just peak male gaze. Which, I don't necessarily mind - because you gotta give something to the teenage boy fans. But coupled that with how they like to write female characters... I am equally dreading and excited to see the return of our queen.

+ Before we jump into other asks. I'm still working through requests ...still in May omg. There's a few I removed such as request for explicit smut. Because 1) There are much MUCH better smut writers in the fandom 2) You'll be waiting forever 3) I don't really wanna 🥹 NSFW hc are much more fun for me.

I also find it difficult to write for canon characters that only appeared in 2 panels or whatever. We're up to our eyeballs in hot characters. I just need something MORE to build on, yknow what I'm saying?

It's unfortunate bc theres not content for them that exist without my own effort 😔(outside of a couple friends) so i cant reblog posts about them like i would for like critical role or something. ive got a variety of "main character" ocs and most of them started out as ttrpg characters that then got their own non-rpg "canon" in a story universe im making with some friends that may or may not end up turning into a series of books. (overarching "plot" of it is that the birth of a new deity ends up connecting people and politics of several planets in different universes)

so like my "main" characters for that are vyma, claysen, and yianni. vyma also has an equally canon ttrpg incarnation for a game thats still ongoing, but claysen and yianni started out as ttrpg characters but now their "canon" is just their storyverse incarnations. i put actual character descriptions under the cut

ima talk about vyma's storyverse incarnation for this, since theres Spoilers for her ttrpg canon that players who follow me dont know yet (but like, the core personality is the same between the two so yeah). but anyway, her full name in storyverse is Vyma Bapp-Matieyepa sip-Sabapak, which is kinda long bc cultural naming conventions include familial last name, chosen/official clan affiliation, and familal-but-not-official clan affiliation (if someone has that). She's one of the unofficial leaders of a revolutionary/resistance group (other leader is one of @cosmemery's characters Naki) that funnels political prisoners to freedom and tries to counteract the imperialism of the country that subjugated theirs and the harm from their own gov that tries to meet the imperialists in the middle. Vyma is pretty tall, pretty butch, and pretty ace. She's got lowkey disabling hyperempathy, but this gets paired with an autistic flat affect that makes her come across unintentionally blunt, monotone, and insensitive at times. she's kinda overcompensated for social issues by using her hyperempathy and just general problem solving to get really fucking good at reading people/figuring out how people are feeling. this unfortunately does not make her any more conversationally adept, and in some cases makes her kinda preachy instead. her flight response (like the trauma response, not just the general fight or flight) is through the fucking roof and she would and prob will grind herself into dust in an attempt to make what she considers a positive impact. she's chronically sleep deprived and refuses to talk about her feelings in a way thats not dodging the question. she likes to bake, but hasnt been able to in a while.

Claysen Hishari (birthname Jarren Claysen Vidravalsh) is like lowkey highkey kinda of A Lot in terms of stuff he's got going on. id like to think i do a decent job not being Edgy (TM) with him but like,,yeah. He's a formal noble who escaped his shitty dad after his mom died and ended up being blackmailed into becoming a spy/assassin. He also technically has emotion/identity-influenced magical power equivalent to at least a minor god, but hes repressing that and its only almost killed him once. His appearance is altered via illusion magic almost constantly. He's more visibly autistic and uses a trade sign language to talk fairly frequently. When he's not signing, he has a very specific speech pattern, and often pauses in the middle of sentences while he figures out how to make words work. At the start of the story, he basically hasn't had goals or ambitions or strong personal convictions for A While, and a lot of his growth is Growing A Fucking Spine and Learning To Act On Things. A lot of his other growth is self acceptance stuff (both autism and the whole emotionally volatile magic thing bc por que no los dos). He has a pretty fuckin codependant relationship with @cosmemery's character Kay, and even before they actually become romantic, theyre platonically flirty with each other to a kinda obnoxious degree. hes bi, super reserved but has a certain air of competence/force of presence to him despite that, and has a special interest in spiders and bugs in general

I and a friend got into some deep thinking surrounding hurting others and letting yourself be hurt due to a deep passion. It started with me saying, since we were originally discussing shows: "dude i love/hate those characters who bring the character down with them. 'Hurt me, ill let you hurt me' and the mc does but theyre so kind hearted that they hated it after the fact and have a massive guilt trip/mental breakdown around it. But the person who is supposed to hate them is comforting them and is saying theyre proud. Its really abusive but,,, both partners are abusing the other" later on the line I said: "i think a fun conversation to have is: hit back. Im strong enough to take but you better be strong enough to take mine. I'll let you hit me, but let me hit you. We should brawl as equals because in a loving relationship, we both are equals. Fuck that bs of me being victimized or you being victimized, hurt me as much as you are hurting and i will hit you as much as you hit me in a bloody scuffle. That sounds much more rewarding" I ended it with "tbh i think its a broken and cruel art to do to yourself and others. Yes, it is passionate and evocative, and certainly is grandiose. But its how a train wreck or car crash is. It is cruel and no one around, or involved, is going to remember it as a still painted picture to be hung up in galleries. It is cruel, it is miserable, and it is scarring. You will remember but the euphoria or excitement in the moment will dwindle and fade, just like the bruises, but the underlying problem stays: "I am hurting" "Ok I will hurt with you" "We are both still hurting" and that'll just lead to rot...i think the true beauty in it is the cruelty. It isnt kind. It isnt right. It is evil and harmful wrapped in a fantastical package that makes me yearn for that feeling of unbridled passion. But im wise enough to recognize that its a folly and that i should look elsewhere for that kind of yearning. It's why i absolutely adore puppy love, because you dont have to be naive or stupid to have it, just have to be head over heels"

I love big Q so fucking much but I'm afraid he bit off more than he can chew here. He already overextended with the divide (shitload spanish streams, pretty much no english streams, the audience became unbalanced, which while understandable, is also very not good for a comeback) and now the lineup is just random people and very few close friends that would help him carry the burden of connection. There could be a last minute grand announcement of more players that he has strong ties to, but the premiere is literally almost here already. He could also introduce his other friends one by one as the smp goes on, but without a strong ground zero group the new players would have no foothold in the environment, even feel alienated if too many of the people decide to wait out comms and just go off to do something individualy. I pray that Q has iron control of the main plan and interpersonal dynamics are taken into account because I want this to work so bad! I'll send as many good vibes as I can, he deserves it ❤️

Unless I'm forgetting someone, it's actually pretty equal? Philza, Fitmc, Foolish, Jaiden, Dantdm, Wilbur and Slime (the last two im assuming cause they were in the trailer) for English and Luzu, Spreen, Maximus, Missa, Vegetta for Spanish. So it's 7:5 + Q. My bet is in that there will be more people that will either be announced between today and tomorrow or that will be introduced to the story later.

I think that what is making noise to ppl is the fact that hispanics sort of already know each other from past events (still. Its not like theyre best friends or something, probs only Luzu and V are from the same group, Maxo too maybe, but V didnt knew who spreen was until he googled him lmao) , but the english CCs don't really have a relationship between them. Idk, is not like I'm expecting the best server in the world on the first day but I trust Q's capacity to choose people that will adapt into the environment so I don't really think I'll flop (at least not right away).

The point is, a bunch of people are already doomposting about it, but I think everyone should give it a chance to show the potential it has. Just wait and see, then you can say whatever you want.

im about to make a comparison then immediately refute it because everything poisons my brain if i dont get it out -> its very clear that naruto and sasuke HEAVILY inspired deku and bakugou, literally down to specific scenes like the one-on-one impromptu fight after all mights fall (where bakugou had to be rescued by deku [and company] and ended up blaming his weakness for the fall of his hero) and the fight on the top of the hospital (after sasuke, trying to save NARUTO, ended up needing to be saved by HIM because he got his ass handed to him by his brother after spending his whole life since the death of his clan preparing to fight itachi, then finding out that itachi literally does not give a flying fuck about him, after all these years, not even as an opponent), naruto/deku's need to be acknowledged as an equal vs sasuke/bakugou's refusal to GIVE that acknowledgement, even if its deserved, because the formers rapid improvement has made them feel like they havent grown at all, and acknowledging that they're now on the same level forces that weakness to be true.

HOWEVER i think that the messy history that bakugou and deku have significantly darkens deku's need for recognition and bakugou's refusal to provide it. theyre childhood "friends"; theyve been close since they were children, and bakugou made dekus childhood a living hell because deku was born without a quirk, whereas bakugou was born with a quirk that is widely and understandably recognized as being incredibly powerful and useful. bakugou grew up with a superiority complex. coming to UA, he was suddenly not the strongest anymore (everyone here is powerful, thats how they passed the exam, at the very least there are people who come close to rivaling him), and the kid who has been useless their whole lives was blessed by the man bakugou looks up to most in the world (acknowledgement that bakugou did NOT recieve and is jealous of), so an inferiority complex starts to fester as well, which is a paradoxical nightmare to be subject to. deku has looked up to bakugou their whole lives. finally he can stand beside him, and he wants to prove that. he wants bakugou to see that. he wants them to be friends, but bakugou fucking hates him for complex personal reasons.

for naruto and sasuke on the other hand, their history is pretty limited. theyd never really interacted before being put in the same team as genin, outside of naruto's imagined one-sided rivalry. their initial relationship is MASSIVELY less antagonistic than that of deku and bakugou. sasuke is aware of his strength and that being born into the uchiha clan makes him uniquely powerful, keenly aware, but hes also living in the shadow of his brother, who was much stronger than him and made fucking sure sasuke knew that. he isnt particularly interested in proving himself to anyone other than himself and itachi. naruto wants to prove himself to sasuke just because he recognizes sasukes strength and literally likes him as a person lol, instead of deku's need to prove himself to bakugou because bakugou doubted deku and put him down all his life. naruto has been neglected most of his life by everyone and no one in particular; it would make equal sense for him to insist on proving to, idk kakashi that hes strong and good and worthy, but hes fixated on that person being sasuke.

sasukes complex about his abilities come from a wildly different place than bakugou's, considering baku's come from a childhood of praise so reverent and constant that it lost all meaning until his view of "success" became something very narrow that only he was able to define it, while sasuke's comes from his horrible childhood in first his brothers shadow, first just as the second best son, then as the survivor of a massacre that he was only spared from because of how useless he is. he's very strong and he knows that, but he has to be better. if naruto is catching up to him, keeps saving him, is more valued by itachi than sasuke is, then sasuke's abilities are at a standstill. he isnt good enough. sasuke also does like naruto as a person, whereas bakugou never even liked deku outside of being like heh! another idiot who looks up to me. bakugou struggles to acknowledge deku because of who deku is and the exact events of their relationship, whereas sasuke LIKES naruto. if he wasnt hellbent on revenge, being saved by naruto would probably incite a pretty regular rival level of annoyance. lmao. no conclusion to this post just a comparison going nowhere

is there a word in french that is somewhat equal to calling a person you don‘t know well honey/darling/love. Maybe in a somewhat flirty way but not like being in a relationship or super close.

this is... a tricky question with a tricky answer, at the very least.

you see, this entire thing basically assumes that its ok to nickname strangers, and in france we opt for respectful distance usually instead. ironically, THIS is how we act to seem friendly, with a lot of excusez-moi (excuse me ? except it is. its hard to explain but the way americans say it translates better to excuse-moi, which is a completely different and more accusatory connotation than the "hey sorry (polite)" of this one), pardon de vous déranger (sorry for disturbing you), je vous en prie (you're welcome but fancy) and so on. polite formulas. we also have a thing called polite you, which basically when instead of using singular you to talk about a singular person you use plural- using vous instead of tu. you use this for Pretty Much Everyone that you arent friends or family with, except kids.

so thats basically a way to say the context youre talking about here. i mean. it exists. but it doesnt translate 1:1. bc we act w in mind the fact that we basically are talking to someone who didnt expect it and is minding their own business and whose boundaries, life and so on we do not know. its also like. the politeness is one big "its ok if you cant answer" and showing that continuing the conversation is opt-in rather than opt-out. using singular you for example comes accross as a disregard for boundaries and almost agressive/insulting. in other words we default to sheepish around strangers, rather than. buddy buddy/sassy motherly. for the special case of business owners who we see pretty often, hmmmm..........

ma p'tite dame is sth that butchers and cheese sellers and things like that will say to a lady in a local shop, especially by men to older ladies with a smaller stature. its literally little lady and very cute. m'sieur/mon bon m'sieur, sir/my good sir, is the to go for a guy. also, they LOVE to go monsieur/madame (family name), esp since knowing peoples names and using them is a mark of familiarity. mon p'tit/ma p'tite is for children- but also, ironically, mon grand/ma grande. its literally small one VS big guy/big girl, depending of whether you want to seem kind and insist on liking the kid and finding them cute, or if you want to make them feel valued and taken seriously and as strong independent people. really tbh everything is in the tone and the sentence structure as well as choosing words that are neither slang nor fancy, rather than in having friendly vocabulary itself. that said, sassy aunt energy hairdressers are, i am afraid, an american specie, and not quite a thing in france. they will be cheerful but will not attribute nicknames. theyll still comment on how thick and amazing your hair is tho. or at least they always did for me. also, unlike friends and the like, business owners will NOT drop the vous bc this is a very open "valuable customer, hi !", a bit like a funny little low bow. anyways...

you also can openly pity people. if someones talking to you bc they need directions or sth, it is socially acceptable to say things like "mon pauvre/ma pauvre" (sth akin to poor dear ig). if youre *really* relieved and someone got you out of HUGE trouble, you can exclaim stuff like "vous êtes un amour !", literally youre an angel. (amour usually means love, but theyre also a subtype of angel. cupids ? you get the idea), dont forget merci beaucoup either ! thank you so much.

anyways... assuming you are asking about this for spy. this is one of these things that, due to cultural differences, we simply would use the english versions instead, a bit like what i explained with this post and some expressions being very hard to translate. also while women may get away with things like mon chou, trésor and so on (read : i cant think of any others) in pitying contexts, men... not so much ? one, they simply just dont use these (chérie, ma jolie, cocotte, etc...) words in this context, only when catcalling, two, when men call women this shit its usually. err. to put it simply. yeah its usually a sign theyre a misogynist/a "beauf" (someone lacking class/respect, often with lifestyles that are all around consuming trash TV, soccer, facebook and rumors stuff). if youre talking about scouts ma tho, who many people like to HC as french as well, yeah shed use (mon) trésor/mon chou

i agree with your general assessment of susie & noelle's respective issues but i don't agree with your assertion that these are "red flags" or signs of a potentially "toxic" relationship. i think you're looking at it through the wrong lens.

it seems pretty clear to me that the whole point of susie's character is that she lashes out with cruelty and pushes others away because she's been made to believe she's unworthy of love or respect, and although she's learning to let herself be open to friendship she will likely still have instances where she hurts those she cares about through acts of fear or defensiveness. this may be a source of conflict but that's not the same as being toxic.

meanwhile noelle, who has a strong fixation on fear and danger – and was originally drawn to susie because of this – is in the process of learning to decide the right course of action for herself. while she may have felt too helpless and confused to do anything about susie's previous treatment of kris, and wanted to put herself in harm's way with susie (but seemingly never actually acted on this, due to aforementioned sense of helplessness/lack of autonomy), she's gradually working on feeling more capable and confident. i think part of her process will be developing the ability to meet susie where she's at, as an equal, as opposed to seeing susie (as she sees most things) as a source of fear or an external, uncontrollable force acting upon her, if that makes sense.

i get the sense that their growing friendship will revolve around susie helping noelle accept that it's okay to be something other than a doormat, while noelle helps susie accept vulnerability and gentleness; in a way, both helping each other develop their sense of self-worth. again, i'm sure there will be conflict as they each have their own issues to work out and those will likely butt up against each other, but i still don't see that as the same as being "toxic," and i don't think that's the intended interpretation of their characters or relationship.

I have talked about this before and im a little tired (cause I just made dinner) so sorry if this comes across as clumsy or I dont make a coherent point, but the toxic relationship is in a less malicious sense and more in a “teenagers have a hard time navigating first love on top of the baggage” sense. Obviously the reading is that theyre meant to compliment each other and I have to be real a part of why I feel it flops is because Ralsei does it so much better in less time even just platonically, because Noelle idolises her and I honest don’t think she’s gonna stop idolising her soon. It also strikes me as a massive bad implication that Noelle is aware that what she’s doing is bad enough she wants to tell authority figures like toriel about it and Susie’s remark makes her feel sick…. And then she just doesn’t. Maybe we will see her progress on this in later chapters if I’m honest I think im gonna have a hard time changing my view on her simply because of the time gap there was in which I cemented my view. And thats okay honestly I want to think the detraction it will do to the rest of the game won’t be too big

In the end we can just agree to disagree ya know. I dont wanna be persuaded into liking dragon deer (I think my mind is set if im real, sorry. I know it’s gonna be canon and I’m not a fan) and I wont talk you into goatdragon either, this is just my blog so I rant unfiltered here lol. When i was writing it i also kept think about blindfolded Hawkeye, all evidence really does point towards him loving it...

He really does get lead and pushed around so often, I'd love to see someone's take on how it contrasts with his control and responsibilities as chief surgeon. Even outside of surgery, the contrast of him being with someone and then having a nurse or doctor coming in to ask for help or giving him an update on a patient and how he can swap between both mindsets ect.

I firmly believe that Hawkeye would valiantly try to be had by all of the nurses if given the time and opportunity. And any attention is good attention is the sort of mindset that Hawkeye would take and then promptly act like a terror until he got the attention he wants. I feel like he wouldnt have to do this with bj as much as others but he does anyways just to be a problem.

Margaret's a strange one bc it would make sense considering her personality and Hawkeye's interest but like, idk. I think its too much of a contrast in my head from his refusal to show her respect as a major, their relationship in the later seasons (in my head) hinges so much on their views of each other as equals and i think the power dynamics would be a mess.

Its kind of funny how they have Hawkeye acknowledge how sexist some of his actions were when i feel like i always remember there being more women in those earlier seasons. I might be misremembering but i feel like if theyre going to do that they could at least make female characters more core. Like not every woman has to be plot relevant to be featured.

ALSO KNOWN AS: I make the argument that Hawkeye and Margaret are already in an aromantic life-partnership and so her occasionally topping him is really just a part of the benefits for both of them (but also I barely make the latter half of that argument, I’m sorry, I go all over the place with this one)

I think (and I mentioned that in another post) that Hawkeye being chief surgeon and Very Good at his high-stress job is a feature in this entire (somewhat jokey, but also haha kidding... unless... you know?) headcanon -- lots of people with those kinds of jobs want to get to shut off any decision-making/responsibilities outside of that space and we see that a lot with Hawkeye (in a non-sexual sense). He really really hates being in charge when it’s not about the job

I just rewatched Carry On, Hawkeye and I love how there’s that scene where Margaret is like “I should be in charge now” and Hawkeye basically goes “absolutely, have at it,” but because she’s so used to him being contrarian and bitchy with her, she thinks he’s arguing that she shouldn’t

and it gives us this interesting line:

and then in the same episode having just given Margaret the reports she needed, if we’re going for the “Hawkeye and strong women/Hawkeye and I’m just a little guy/Hawkeye and putting himself on the table” well...

literally.... on the table....

(Margaret if you’re in charge you have to get used to a lanky weirdo lying about on your desk, that’s just who he is)

and then of course:

Anyway this takes us neatly into “Margaret and Hawkeye” territory...

1. first there’s all this stuff around sexuality and gender and romance and relationships happening between those two -- Margaret and “sir” and incorrect womanhood leading her relationships to not work and being openly sexual (and highly suggested dominating), Hawkeye and calling himself “aunt” and being a motherhen and all the being pregnant jokes, and being stepped on jokes, and “joking” about being married to men, etcetcetc --

of course the crux of which is that amazing conversation they have in “Stars and Stripes” in which it’s made textual how similar they are in their ideas about relationships. One of the main reasons I like to hc them as aro is that the way they phrase it is so... vague.... they can’t pinpoint why it never works out for them, time and time again, other than “they can’t change who they are,” and they’re looking for a “custom fit,” but at least with Hawkeye he’s been shown to “fall in love” with people very fast (Erika, Kyung Soon, Inga, etc) and (due to the nature of syndication) get over those relationships again/fall in love with someone new just as fast -- and a note on Erika is that he’s literally suggesting marriage and she’s the one to shut him down (in an also very aro way)

not to mention Carlye whom he proposes to have been in love with for years/never gotten over, but when given the chance for a do-over doesn’t leap at the chance... again because of vague “you choose your job over romantic relationships” reasons (any aromantic who can relate to that reasoning/has literally scoured for historical people who were described that way, raise your hands)

with Margaret you do get the sense that she’d wanted these relationships/that she invests in them, but that the men can never accept her as she is (which Hawkeye does -- and he doesn’t even do it on purpose, to begin with they’re scratching and clawing at each other as we all know), so you see, she’d love to be in a romantic relationship if only she were a completely different person, but alas she can’t be and so she’ll never be a correct woman (again, any aro who’s felt that connection between brokenness and incorrect gender and aroness raise your hands...) and to stretch that one even further, the imagery in “Dreams” of her in the wedding dress with those bodies of men in her bed and the miscarriage-looking blood-stain, it’s all... very evocative of that same incorrect/broken woman, who will never get those things that society promises are what brings happiness that she won’t have and maybe doesn’t even want, but what’s the alternative being offered here?

dead bodies and a lifetime of being alone?

2. I think it’s interesting that you said that because Margaret’s and Hawkeye’s later relationship hinges on them being equals that the power dynamics would be a mess, when that respect is actually the very thing that makes me think of them being perfect for each other in this scenario – there’s a lot of trust and vulnerability that goes into that, especially considering aforementioned gendered expectations and the ways they both already fuck around with them, and how well they know each other at that point. And if I’m gonna take “Inga” at face value, Hawkeye isn’t as out about his (in this headcanon) preferences as one might have thought, so being vulnerable with a stranger? Or someone who isn’t as under his skin as Margaret is?

What I do wonder about is whether later seasons Hawkeye is… all that interested in sex? Overall? Comparatively? Sure, there’s the occasional “Hawkeye has a date” or “Hawkeye does some flirting (with friends),” but – I will go more into this in my next post about women in MASH – when he talks to Marina in opening s10 about how he’s not treated women right in the past + has seen too much to ever be wide-eyed again, it is both good reasons to blow her off, and also something I definitely read at face value.

It also goes into something someone said on a post (I’m sorry I cannot remember where) about how later seasons had less sex, but also less homoeroticism hand-in-hand with that, but also that it’s just that the tone is overall – for Hawkeye more than any other character (he frequently gets The Narrative end of the stick, while everyone else is having a bit of a laugh) – less light-hearted at that point, and also it may have had to do with how they wanted to write the women who did come on the show (again, for next post). My point is that it all adds up to make him seem both Really Really Tired and Much Less Interested In Sex, and then as a consequence gives it a fun read of maybe he's less interested in sex, because he’s so damn tired?

In that scenario is he looking for an occasional fun time with his good friend Margaret Houlihan who maybe would step on him wearing heels (a thing he has canonically lamented her not doing at one point on the show) if he asked nicely and called her sir? Or is it that by the time they become good enough friends that he might trust her and she might trust him with these sexual and gender transgressions, he’s not in a place to try and make anything like this happen at all, because he’s just… tired?

But overall, I do think out of anyone at the 4077th… except for maybe Klinger (and also Sid, if we’re going beyond-but-adjacent), Margaret is the person who might be able to accommodate for Hawkeye the best, and Hawkeye might be able to give Margaret something she doesn’t entirely know how to balance with other men (the one downside is that technically Margaret would wanna be doing something like this with a guy like Trapper – bigger/more traditionally outwardly masculine, but it’s not like she doesn’t find Hawkeye attractive/I don’t think it would be a total dealbreaker – anyway, also smthinsmthin Hawkeye and Margaret are often attracted to the same kinda guy… as for women, I think Hawkeye is pretty broad, while Margaret likes Strong Women (similar to the men))

Meanwhile Margaret, it feels like, has prepared herself for this lifetime of loneliness, except she’s got this family all around her and maybe this guy who’s also not looking for normative relationship structures and is also Not Correct in vague, unspoken (queer) ways. But maybe, again, around the time where it could conceivably be going on, neither of them are in that headspace or maybe they can get each other out of the more tragedy-filled-careening-towards-the-end-of-the-narrative headspace, I can’t say for sure until I’ve finished the show

and speaking of that unknowable space...

What about after the show then?

3. So here’s some stuff I can’t know until I’ve finished it -- I don’t know where Hawkeye ends up and I don’t know where Margaret ends up (or anyone else for that matter), but I do think they’re the two characters who are the most conflicted at this point and likely will be right through to the end

Margaret has made a choice to not get into a romantic relationship with anyone unless they understand her as she is, and so to all intents and purposes has practically sworn off romantic relationships -- this is also framed as her putting her career first, although not entirely. It’s more like she’s putting herself first, but also… there’s something there that doesn’t quite fit. It’s certainly more possible for her to stick with the military than to conform to a housewife ideal, because she’s been with the military her whole life, but she also no longer idealizes what it is and stands for. I really do wonder where she’ll be by the end and I sort of assume she’ll stay with the military, but I also read that somewhat through the lens of disappointing, but expected romances.

Because she’s changed a lot. I don’t think the military really is her home, but I don’t think she knows of anywhere else to go. So I wouldn’t be surprised if she stays with it – I think it would be in character – I just think it would be bittersweet. Better than a marriage, but also not as good as she could do if she could unpack some more of those vague ideas that niggle in her brain (it’s queerness, but not just that, but this read of her is based around that aromanticism in particular).

And meanwhile Hawkeye is just a mess. Idk, I can’t see that changing. I also can’t see where I’d place him after the war, because I can’t see him as okay in that movie-lotr Frodo Baggins Can Never Go Home way. I can’t see anyone as technically “okay,” but I don’t think he has anyplace where he could go to attempt what people call “resuming a normal life.” Hell, I’m not even entirely sure I could see him continuing as a surgeon (that episode with the surgeon who completely breaks down is uh… well, it’s not there for nothing). Similar to Margaret, but with added PTSD, there’s all that Vagueness niggling at his brain, which maybe angers him, because he already knows he’s a big ol bisexual who falls for married men, so what gives? And he doesn’t even have a fallback like the army. At best he might simply be a surgeon or a general practitioner, but you know… The Horrors. I can’t see him as anything but haunted for the rest of his life

And so thinking of a dream scenario where they both somehow make it and it’s not just “trying to get by (trying to get by in the army, trying to get by back in Maine, trying to remember what “home” is supposed to be)” I’m like… what if they just moved in together and tried to deal with the Vagueness together, same as they’ve done multiple times on the show?

(And sidenote I maybe should’ve gotten into earlier, it’s so interesting that their romantic travails are shared with one another more than any other character -- Hawkeye is the person who knows the most about what was going on with her and Frank/Don/Sully, and she knows about him and Kyung Soon, and the aforementioned Big Conversation about The Revolving Heart Of Korea, which is said by Margaret, but is really the both of them)

(sidenote: Hawkeye is consistently the person who makes her smile like this the most)

(other other sidenote: “double-solitaire” ought to be codeword for queerplatonic aro partnership?????)

(other other other sidenote: literally just watched “Birthday Girls” in which Margaret rails against getting sympathy, but in this one she accepts it so readily from Hawkeye, and has done multiple times ever since the episode with the dog)

Margaret is the woman (maybe even the person) that Hawkeye knows best/has Hawkeye’s number and has done from very early on (but now she’s incredibly fond of that nr), Hawkeye is at least 10% of Margaret’s perfect man, it would be a great beard for the both of them, and they’d be able to draw a lot of comfort from each other.

And you know... they See Each Other and don’t expect the other person to change the core of themselves to fit, and they could challenge one another to become their most truthful selves better than anyone else could

SO IN CONCLUSION WOULD MARGARET DOM HAWKEYE (is barely the question that’s been answered in this long fucking post): IT DEPENDS

early seasons Hawkeye would have been SO up for it, but Margaret would not + it wouldn’t have been great for either of them I think? Although, sometimes they got along, even then, so maybe off the back of an episode like that... (but I do think it matters that they never canonically have sex until “Comrade in Arms”)

later seasons Hawkeye may have been too depressed for sexual frolicking and Margaret was going through an identity crisis, so idk, somewhere in between all of that somewhere?

POST seasons Hawkeye and Margaret... maybe? depending on where you puttem? if they get to spend time together?

would they at the very least have fantasized about it? Oh yeah, absolutely!
