Fun fact, when someone picks a new deadly sin to represent themself, you can actually eat and become their old one without needing to compromise your previous deadly sins!!

You don't have to be just one! You're actually intended to have quite a few of them, in fact! It's a strange system, I would've designed it differently, but that's just one of the tips and tricks I learned over the years about the Abrihamic meta, if you're trying to minmax.

This system does lead to some people being pressured into picking new sins so the pressurer can maximize sin intake, however it is also important to remember that once you reach all 7 you either (1.) run out and reset your method of sin intake by picking a new starting sin and counting from 1 again or (2.) move on to a new model of sin measurement (Such as Dante's Inferno layers of hell, for instance) and need to retrofit old sins into new ones, which is almost like a soft reset of sorts (For example, needing to figure out how to translate Sloth into the layers structure while accounting for thematic overlaps).

Point (2.) can get complicated when going from a model with more sins to a model with less sins. You have to figure out which sins are being conglomerated and consolidated as well as distributing importance semi-consistently, because you need to make sure there is at least one in the new model that you haven't taken yet.

There, of course, is the universal truth that "You are all Sin all at once and You only wish to quantify sins in the first place to pretend like You are excluded from sins that You are actively embodying (By being Sin, in Sin's entirety)" but that really is just a 1-sin binary model... which necessitates a 0 to explain its existence as 1 in the first place... You get it. The reason why we pick these models is because it's fun.

Sure We are God, but we knew that already and want to pretend like there's more to it than that because it's fun. Sin is fun!! That's why people keep dying (Or living but being tortured through living) for Our sins (It very much did not start with the one big example you're probably thinking of). It's fun!!

Just. Maybe stop dying. I get it can be fun for you, more power to you or whatever, but dying also kinda blows. I know I will sometimes say Till All Are One or whatever but I wanna be One with You... even though you'd be there regardless, under All after all... Whatever.

And I've been teasing at Greed for a while. Though, those are just the ones that are compliant with both the Deadly model and the Inferno model, it gets a bit more complicated considering my Deadly root was Pride and I haven't given that up yet, so to separate the models a bit it'd actually be

With Greed, Sloth, and Envy missing (Sloth is actually maybe next for my deadly chart, and Envy flickers in and out on its own)

With Heresy, Violence, and Fraud regrettably missing (The three flicker like Envy in the Deadly model but it's because sometimes I'm leaning more towards the Deadly model so it is Envy and sometimes I'm in the Inferno model so Envy gets interpreted as one or two of the three without completing it outright, with the stressing on one over the other two or two over the other one allowing for enough of a buffer to be fickle. This is also the reason why Greed is locked in for Inferno but not for Deadly. I tend to prefer Inferno, after all.)

Anyway, yeah, I was just using myself as an example. But if you're thinking about dropping sloth for something else hmu I'll eat it after you.

You also don't have to drop them, if this proves anything it should be proving that you can be multiple at once (That's kinda the whole point actually) so striving to be multiple instead of just relying on revelations to begin swapping might be a game changer for you if you're trying to grapple with your original sins and don't know how to respec without resetting

as adrasteans existed through time, the prime guardians retired their position and rather assumed an overlooking position over their brethren. they overlooked the training of younger guardians, selecting them meticulously through a rigorous course of mastery into the powers they claimed through their connection to the primordials. the council is made up of the three prime adrasteans, along with a flurry of younger retired guardians. given the longevity of their existence, figures of their liking exist in various mythologies. three harbingers of death and destruction that sweep though lands with disaster, disease, and damage. the prime adrasteans would come to be known as  𝐠𝐞𝐛, 𝐚𝐛𝐳𝐮, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐮, representing the three triunes, earth, water, and sky respectively.

I've been searching, but I can't pinpoint where exactly the star cluster leading to Lira San is located, but considering that some time VERY long ago, the Lasat people left Lira San and settled on Lasan, there's a good chance they made stops along the way, maybe stayed for prolonged periods of time.

Maybe the manifestations of The Ashla/The Bendu/The Bogan made attachments to some of these places. What if Atollon was one of the stopping points along the way from Lira San to Lasan?????

In a similar vein, Lira San was hidden just like Atollon was (though obviously not to the same degree), so maybe there should be a manifestation of the Ashla on Lira San just like the Bendu (except with way less spider caves, lucky for Zeb).

pardon my brief theological ramblings for a bit, but I’m bouncing between the bogan, Bendu, and Ashla being a pantheon and being triune (meaning they are at the same time distinct and the same whole, I.e in trinitarian christianity Jesus is fully Jesus and fully god at the same time). If they were triune, that’s actually pretty fascinating, because it prevents something like tcws mortis arc from happening (where one kills the other), because they are fully each other and fully separate at the same time. It also strengthens that the force is genuinely neutral, and that they truly are consubstantial in the fact that they are of the same substance but perform different actions/uses.

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, if they’re a pantheon of gods, a) that makes it way, way easier for them to operate separately of each other, b) it allows for lesser gods in the hierarchy of Lasat gods, c) it allows for infighting among the gods (i.e a celestial war, which could maybe still fit with the consubstantial triune thing if I got freaky with it?). Maybe the bogan could not be evil just like the ashla maybe couldn’t be good, they’re just manifestations of light and darkness. AND THEN, that allows for sects and cults to form where extremist groups elevate one of the three above the other and twist their desires to fit their own agendas (I’ve already kinda started with this on Stars Go Dim, be on the lookout for Eversor :3).

A queer reflection for Trinity Sunday

There’s something queer about a Triune God. 

How can one Being also be three Persons? The math doesn’t seem to add up! Some spend years attempting to articulate this theology in a way that doesn’t fall into “heresy”; others give up with a laugh and accept it as a Mystery. Ultimately, the God of the Universe is ineffable, beyond our understanding — yet we are called to seek ever deeper relationship with God, and promised that if we seek, we will find.

When people decry queer identities as nonexistent, overly complicated, or paradoxical, I can’t help but think of our impossible Three-in-One God. I think also about my own gender journey: how I struggled as a child to name what I was feeling because I had no language to describe it; how once I discovered others had words for what I was experiencing, I delighted in every one I could uncover; and how, ultimately, even my favorite words I’ve found to describe myself fall short. 

Words like trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer certainly help others understand and relate to me better — but I’ve learned to be okay with the fact that they might never fully know me, just as I may never fully know them. Turns out that the children of a Mysterious God are micro-mysteries in ourselves!

What I’m left with is this: if we worship a Triune God, why do we try to squeeze the humans made in that Infinite, Ineffable Being’s image into two narrow boxes? And if we celebrate how, in the Incarnation and Resurrection, Divinity burst through the binaries between Creator & Creation, Life & Death, surely the binary between male & female isn’t so insurmountable!

Together, let us pray:

Holy God, whose very existence is relationship, we marvel at your mystery. Protect this day and always those of your children who, like you, defy easy definition and resist restrictive categories. Teach us to recognize your wisdom and holiness shining within them, for only together in all our diversity do we reflect your image. Amen.

Last night I was doing some research into the Christ figure trope, and I noticed something interesting on the Wikipedia page.

There are three Christ figures in Lord of the Rings to create a triune, and each one represents a different aspect of Christ. First is Gandalf (sage/prophet), next is Frodo (saviour/priest) and the third is Aragorn (king). (My LOTR knowledge only goes as far as the movies, maybe if someone is more familiar with the source material they can jump in?)

And then I realized, the show is doing the same thing with El, Will, and One.

El is Gandalf (sage/prophet) since she is the all powerful, mysterious and magical one. She also sacrificed herself at the end of season one and came back in season two, similar to how Gandalf sacrificed himself at the end of Fellowship of the Ring and came back stronger in The Two Towers.

Will is Frodo (saviour/priest) as shown through his journey to an unknown dark landscape and connection to a dark entity. Furthermore, Will’s dnd class is a Cleric, which is essentially a priest. (This could also foreshadow Will’s potential chosen one/hero role for next season)

One is Aragorn (king) Like Aragorn, One was exiled when he was sent to the Upside Down by El in 1979. He then usurps the Upside Down and essentially becomes it’s king.

These aren’t 1:1 comparisons, obviously the characters arcs go in different directions (namely One is evil and Aragorn is not) but I found it interesting how the show is using the same technique of creating a holy trinity within its characters.

(I also think that potentially depending on how Will’s arc goes next season and what gets revealed about him he could also represent all three but that might be a post for another day)

New Transmission The fucking Scientific Instrument Class Pseudocons apparently developed what they're calling "Hetero Sapience" and are corrupting the brainmodules of the non-Pseudo 'cons around them by using annoying xenophilosophy words. Soundwave tells me they're 'Greek' and 'Latin' words, apparently. Cool, I guess? Anyway, if you see any SI Class 'cons causing... issues, just try your hardest to turn your brainmodule off before you start getting infected with their weird lingo, alongside all the other issues pertaining to letting the SI Pseudocons transmit data into your brainmodule in their own weird ways. Thundercracker, on a bet with Starscream, tried to get into an argument with one of them and his head literally exploded when it started talking about Alpha Trion's "Mythological Origins" in its weird dialect. He's mostly fine, CR Pods are working at 'peak' efficiency, but the facial reconstruction is apparently impossible due to some kind of corruption. I thought it was just some weird prank but there weren't even any scorch marks or anything. Just exploded. So yeah, just avoid optical contact and auditory contact to the best of your ability and you should be fine. Otherwise, try to force-shutdown your brainmodule if you can. Shockwave is working on a cure right now, mostly because I know he had something to do with this in the first place so he's going to be the one to fix it. He probably wanted a greater justification to do that weird data-transfer idea he mentioned previously. But it also explains the weird Thunderwing hypotheticals he's been asking me lately... Can I go one fucking cycle without someone trying to "Perfect Thunderwing's Work" or whatever other idiotic drivel that I keep finding our limited energon reserves siphoned into?? It's not even a Shockwave thing, it's like every damn Cybertronian these days thinks they have the "Missing piece of the puzzle" or whatever. In fact, Shockwave might be doing this as a weird threat against the other R&D 'cons to cement himself as the one and only Decepticon "Allowed" to have resources wasted on projects like that. Ugh, now that I think about it, that's probably a correct assumption and he's probably gonna expect me to thank him for it later. Ugh, and he's probably literally right. Ugh. At least his repairs both to himself and to his lab seem to be mostly complete so further research into the SI project should hopefully come along a little faster. Both Shockwave and Soundwave think the SIs could potentially be used as some kind of specialty weapon, but we'll have to see how they work on sparkless lifeforms, like biological lifeforms or xenomechanical lifeforms. The SIs don't seem to corrupt each other, but Shockwave keeps reaffirming that they're not "Sparkless Lifeforms" because they "were never lifeforms to begin with"... but I think he's trying to hide something. Usually Soundwave is the one to pick up on that kind of technological obfuscation, but he actually agreed with Shockwave and offered to send Ratbat to try to work out exactly what each "sapient" SI is now capable of on a personal level. We could have just had regular Cybertronians aboard to fill the role SIs fill. I would've preferred K Class to fill any role an SI could fill in all honesty!! But no, constructing cold wasn't enough, we just had to try to learn how to "Construct Frozen" and the "Absolute Zeroes" just had to be put on my ship. Whatever. I've probably said too much already. This was supposed to be a warning for my ship crew, but it's looking like it'll end up being transcribed on the golden disk as well so when this new Scientific Instruments of Destruction project backfires in some absurdly bombastic way there will at least be something remaining that says I was right. New Transmission Okay so I was right, but so was Shockwave and Soundwave. Or, well, they were right just enough to make sure the backfire is postponed for at least another handful of cycles. Ratbat is still in CR from the investigation, but the cure Shockwave developed seems to be effective and Thundercracker is out and aiding the repair effort. Shockwave is now in contact with one of the SIs digitally and the other few are... integrating due to the personal efforts of Soundwave. I suppose now would be pertinent to mention not all the SIs developed the "Hetero Sapience" condition, many of them are safe for interaction. Soundwave is also currently monitoring their presence, Ravage is tasked with the regular SIs and Laserbeak is tasked with the "Sapient" SIs. The Withdrawn Triad & the Freudian Ego

Welcome to today’s entry from the Theory Post List – I think this may be The Good One

There is something that had always stumped me about the association of the Hornevian Triads with the freudian triune self.

Generally the way it’s explained, you’re told that the superego contains expectations & civilized values from society, the id contains your animal impulses and the ego is the bit that „has to mediate between them“, & that’s often where it’s left at with no further elaboration.

It’s easy to see how the Dutyful/Compliant types want to be good & moral, & how the assertive types go straight for what they want. But what’s the withdrawn triad have to do with ego? Where does any ‚mediation‘ come in? Maybe 9 could be seen as mediating between different parts of oneself but how does it apply to 4 or 5.

Sure, there’s some snobbish 4s and 5s around (9s less so) but generally when people speak of someone who has a „Big Ego“, they’re picturing an Assertive Type who’s somewhat low on self-awareness. So, rather someone who has a Big Id.

But of course they’d be using the term „ego“ in the more colloqiual sense of meaning ‚pride‘ or  ‚self-concept’, not in the same sense as in the psychological theory.

So I went to do some reading. I figured that trying to get how exactly the old-timesy psychologists thought about the ego. The golden key here was this quote by Freud: „The Ego is the censor of reality“. There was a diagram to go with that that showed the ego as a circle looking out onto, or interfacing with reality while the superego and if were attached to it on the other side.

After all, your animal impulses can want alot, your internalized values can demand alot, but it may not actually be possible to accomplish it in reality. You may want to fly or feel like you should be able to fly, but if you walk of a cliff you’ll die.

So, the ego’s job is to determine what reality is. Bam. Let that sink in. Does that not make all the sense?

& perhaps you can already sort of see how each of the withdrawn types does this coming from their dominant center. 5 wants to know what reality is in the sense of building a complete mental map of it. 4 filters it through the personal lens of the heart center – what’s my reality? My identity, my meaning, my significance. 4s pay attention to & mull over their feelings & memories to find what it means about them as individuals. And 9 of course has often been described as being concerned with the question of ‚what does it mean to be here?‘ on a very basic level and having this unique holistic view of the world & a knack for sinking their attention completely into experiences, feelings and people.

This tells you at once why those are generally introverted people & why they’d spend a lot of time in contemplation & spend much time revisiting/reorganizing past memories. The goal is to process everything thoroughly to extract reality from it – whether as insight, personal meaning or just unencumbered experience. High processing means high energy cost means introvert. (though there are exceptions)

You’re not finished working through the first thing when the next one comes so eventually you throw up your hands like „No more things please! Gotta work through the backlog first.“

When you think of it that way, you can finally understand how each triad’s orientation results in their characteristic behavior and ‚reaction speed‘.

For example, why are the Id types assertive/agressive? You could say that it’s cause they’re selfish, but that would be based on an old 20th century misrepresentation of how evolution actually works. For a pack animal survival of the fittest can also mean cooperation, so we do have pro-social instincts. A 7 might invite all their friends to free pizza cause gets them a big dopamine hit. An 8 might intimidate someone who hassled their little brother out of a territorial instinct. A 3 might donate a heap of cash to charity cause it looks good. The starving children are no less fed if you don’t pass some moralistic unicorn pure of heart test.

No, rather what makes the Assertive Types assertive is speed. Your lizard brain is always available to you for referencing and comparing against, since it is inside your skull. It’s the oldest and hence the quickest & the most optimized for its particular jobs.

Their ‚core game loop‘ goes from action to thought, from strategy to implementation, with the effect that data intake and feelings lag behind, yes, but also resulting in amazing realtime responses, hence why 7s 3s and 8s are usually (though not always) extroverts.  

Now let’s look at the compliant/dutyful types – external rules & expectations would be largely stored in your memory & hence especially impacted by the environment. Unlike lizard instincts that are inborn, memory has to be learned and retrieved, but it’s still reasonably quick & cheap to access.

The catch comes when you have no rule available for a new situation. Then you might have to ask advice. However, this also means that you are benefitting from the wisdom of the crowd, so to speak: You needn’t reinvent the wheel, and you can more flexibly respond to social environments. (Obglitaroy note that knowing the rules doesn’t always mean following them - they’re data to work with. )

These types go quickly from Intake to Implementation, which can lead to great productivity & responsibly doing what needs to be done. But they can also miss or struggle with the ‚strategizing‘ step, responding to doing & back without checking that they’re „aimed“ in the right direction.

Lastly, the withdrawn triad would have a heavy emphasis on processing & the possible trap of never getting to implementation due to getting stuck in a loop of intake & processing. (having thoughts & fantasies & then having feelings based on those fantasies, ad infinitum.)

Rather than referencing external input or ‚just doing it‘, the emphasis is on the processing step. With the obvious pitfall that, its no use to see reality clearly if you don’t do anything with that info - & even your conclusions themselves may be limited if they are never tested.

The Censor of Reality

Step 2 here is to try & further go into detail how each of the three types is tied to/ an overdominance of a particular aspect of/ function of determining reality.

There have been a lot of frameworks by Freud, Szondi and other contemporaries as well as more modern writers but they all have their own problems & bring in many extraneous factors uneeded to make my point so rather than bore you with long-winded preambles, I will try to construct my point from scratch greek philosopher style.

So, on the most basic level out sophisticated thinking functions are arrays of pattern recognizers – „Tiger spotted!“. Of these, some tend to fire together/ be connected, whereas some networks of neurons inhibit each other.

So the most basic distinction is „present/absent“ or „connected/ not connected“. Objects in the environment can be the same or different. (presence or absence of a connection)

If we see two objects as related, the same or conneced, that means they cause some circuits to fire together.

This applies to our self-concept as well, which is another domain of the ego (hence the very name ‚ego‘). If we perceive that we are „the same“ as someone or feel „connected“ to someone, that means that our concept of ourselves and our concept of the other person are connected, or that we connect the object activity etc. to our self-concept.

A sort of extreme of this ‚Lumping Function‘ can be experienced if you take a lot of drugs and feel „one with the universe“.

What’s really happened is that the LSD or whatever has downregulated your default mode pathwork that normally regulates what we’d think of as the ego. Lumping goes on overdrive, so, it’s really your concept of yourself that gets connected to your concept of the universe.

Makes you consider that in a sense you’ve never actually interacted with anything, just your concepts of them, & the darkness of your skull…

At this point the connection to type 9 should be obvious, since those sometimes experience a low-level form of ‚one with the universe‘ even when perfectly sober. Perception is weighted towards noticing similarities. (which may be absolutely real, truly present similarities that others miss) & its hard sometimes to distinguish what’s yours & what’s someone else’s.

The boundary between concepts, & between self & others, is fuzzy.

Since you want to be connected, or, feel your surroundings are almost kinda part of you, separation feels scary. Like severing part of yourself.

But this also lends itself to empathy, intuition, a good spatial awareness and broad holistic thinking – taking in subtle clues from the environment that others would not let in, or filter on. Basically everything 9s are awesome at.

Now for it’s opposite, what we may call the ‚Splitting Function‘. The perception of distinction, when two things in reality are not the same.

Like with the Lumping Function, this also applies to the self-concept: If the Lumping Function is the drive to be connected to the environment, the Splitting Function is the drive to maintain the separation & independence of the self, to limit its connections. Surely none of us could function without at least some degree of independence. One way this can be attained is by just labeling the object as external to the self. Not mine. Nothing to do with me. Not connected.

But what if you actually need the external object? You can’t just ignore all of reality, after all. Well in that case, this can be solved by integrating external things into the self. For example, if you internalize the message of ‚brush your teeth‘, Mommy no longer needs to tell you to brush your teeth, and you gain some independence.

Either way, be it by disconnecting/disinvesting, or „bringing in“, the self lessens connections to things outside itself.

It follows that if there’s an overdominance of this in one individual , one would want to „bring in“ conceptual representations of as many things as possible – not to „be one with“ the universe but to contain it within the self. There’s drug trip stories to go with this, too, usually unpleasant ones of the ‚everything‘s an illusion and I’m all alone’ sorts. The ones about being God or being the universe may also be a variant of this.

Dependency & contact, especially forced unwanted contact, anything that would jeaopardize the separateness and integrity of the self, would be feared.

And at this point you’ve probably caught my drift.

Which leaves just one more.

The ‚Symbolic‘ Function.

As living beings we’re not just determining reality so we can experience or look at it, but typically we want to do something with that understanding. For this we need something more than just a conceptualization of a world as various objects that are connected or not connected, same or not same: We need to know which ones are important.

That’s a function that is not so strong in 9s („everything has equal priority“) or 5s („information for information’s sake“) for example.

In psychology speak they sometimes talk about the process of cathexis, which is to connect objects in the environment with instinctual drives and emotions.

A classic example is money. What the heck is money? Just paper. In the stone age there was no money, our ancestors did not evolve to chase green paper.

But due to the magic of symbolic thinking, we’ve connected money to things that apes do value – like food, attractiveness, social status. So people fight just as desperately for money as apes fight for food. Sometimes it gets halfway forgotten that a symbol is not the thing itself.

Money is not food, you cannot eat it.

If reckless decisions made to gain money lead to the collapse of society, you will no longer be able to exchange money for food.

Another example is connecting music or colors with emotion.

This, too, can be influenced by drugs said to act on the ‚ego‘ – many classic psychedelics target a receptor that’s known to play a role in assigning meaning or significance. Play music to a bunch of people on acid, and they will read a lot more meaning into the lyrics.

Of course one could see that as the drug confusing you so you see meaning where none is, but is that really true? After all, meaning is not a measurable property. There are shared symbols yes but ultimately all meaning is subjective, assigned by the individual. Being high just stimulates the same function that is used all the time.

So, same game, imagine a person with an overdominance of symbolic fuction, primed to see the emotional associations and „meanings“ in everything, with a pronounced subjectivity & a strong perception of emotional associations.  They’d have a strong sense of important and not important, different assignments of others be damned.

Imagine what it means to apply this to one’s self-concept, what such a person would want.

It figures they’d be constantly assigning meaning to things about the self, like thoughts & feelings, & would want their choices, life & relationships to be full of significance & depht, whereas insignificance would be feared - & from that can spring the whole trap of avoiding similarity with others & amplifying negativity to keep a sense of significance & all that jazz, but the affinity for symbol may be yet more fundamental.

Tl;dr: The Withdrawn Types are ‚ego‘ types because they’re concerned with processing reality.

I'm wondering why you have the views about Hillsong and other charismatic churches?

Hi, thanks so much for your question. I used to listen to some Bethel music actually, maybe 10 years ago? I even visited the church in Redding because I was curious, I had heard their teachings were doctrinally unsound, but I wanted to check it out for myself. I learned quickly it was off - there was a woman teaching over the congregation and it was more of a self-help/Jesus gives you your best life now message as opposed to exegetically studying the Word of God, the Bible. There were other things to note as well that were concerning, but the biggest thing for me was the lack of doctrine and a woman teaching over men and women.

I have had a few friends that are into the Charismatic Movement and one theme I notice is that they are always seeking God for what he can do for them advantageously, meaning everything with God is based upon God meeting their needs/requests - seeking him for what he can do for them as opposed to worshipping him for who he is and worthy of our worship based on his glory.

Is Hillsong a biblically solid church?

Hillsong Church was founded in 1983 in Sydney, Australia, by former "Global Senior Pastors" Brian and Bobbie Houston. Hillsong is probably best known for their praise and worship music, having recorded dozens of popular songs since 1992, including the church favorite “Shout to the Lord.” Besides being Australia’s largest church, Hillsong has locations around the world, including campuses in Kiev, London, New York, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Moscow, São Paulo, and other cities. Hillsong Church was originally a part of the Assemblies of God of Australia (now called the Australian Christian Churches), but formed its own denomination in 2018. Brian Houston stepped down from his leadership role in March 2022 amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Is Hillsong Church a biblical church? Their stated beliefs on their official website include the basic doctrines of the triune God, salvation by grace through faith in Christ, and the reality of heaven and hell. There are a couple of concerns, however. One statement on their “What We Believe” page is curiously lacking: “We believe in the power and significance of the Church and the necessity of believers to meet regularly together for fellowship, prayer and the ‘breaking of bread.’” This statement alludes to Acts 2:42, which says the early church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” What’s missing in the Hillsong statement is “the apostles’ teaching.” Why is this omitted?

A more obvious concern is Hillsong’s ordination of women as pastors, in contradiction of Scripture’s teaching that men are to be the spiritual leaders of the church (1 Timothy 2:11–12). Bobbie Houston, co-pastor of Hillsong Sydney, told The Christian Post in an October 16, 2014, interview that, when it comes to women in leadership, “the church needs to come of age sometimes and just grow up.”

Probably most troubling is Hillsong’s embrace of the Word of Faith movement. From the Hillsong website: “We believe that God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and blessed lives in order to help others more effectively.” Going along with the teaching that God always wills to heal and that “blessed” equals “healthy” is the prosperity gospel, which adds that God wills to enrich us financially. In Pastor Brian Houston’s 1999 book You Need More Money, he promotes the prosperity gospel: “We have to become comfortable with wealth, and break the bondage, guilt and condemnation of impoverished thinking. Poverty is definitely not God’s will for His people. In fact, all His promises talk of blessing and prosperity” (page 8). Houston insists that he only promotes seeking wealth for unselfish purposes—such as investing in ministry—but it is hard to reconcile the idea that “poverty is definitely not God’s will” with Paul’s teaching to be “content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want” (Philippians 4:12, emphasis added).

The Hillsong Church has been criticized for its leaders’ reticence to take a position on homosexuality. Former Hillsong New York Pastor Carl Lentz, fired in 2021 for marital infidelity, declined to comment on gay marriage in a televised 2013 interview: “Often people want you to make these big statements about things [e.g., gay marriage] and I don’t believe it’s fair. I don’t think a public forum is always the best place to talk about something that’s so sensitive and important to so many because in a public forum there’s no discussion there” (quoted by Meeks, G., “NYC Megachurch Pastor Believes Sexuality Shouldn’t Be Discussed in Public Forum,” Charisma News, 12/20/2013). The fact that any issue is “sensitive” or “important” should not prevent a pastor from clearly communicating God’s Word in a public forum. Can we only answer direct questions about morality privately or when we can “discuss” the matter?

As with many ministries, there are positive and negative facets to Hillsong. Are there people being saved through the Hillsong Church? Yes, and we praise God for that. Can a Christian worship the Lord with a Hillsong-produced song? Yes. Can a person be misled with the false idea that God always wants us to be healthy and rich? Unfortunately, yes. Should a church exercise discernment in the matter of song choice and where the royalties are going? Again, yes. “Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:20–21).
