Naval dirk, owned by Lt. G. Budd U.S.N., 1814-1820
The specification of Budd’s rank as Lieutenant would be appropriate for the period of 1814-1820. The dirk, as is usually the case, is unmarked and may date earlier. A native of Bush Town, Harford County, Maryland, George Budd was appointed Midshipman in the U.S. Navy 22 November 1805. In June 1813 he was the senior surviving officer of the U.S.S. Chesapeake after its disastrous encounter with H.M.S. Shannon. Budd made Lieutenant 23 May 1814. In addition to his service on the Chesapeake, in 1814 he was on the Sloop of War Ontario. Detached to command Fort Look-out at Fells Point, Maryland, he helped save Baltimore by repelling a British sea-borne attack of twenty barges with troops on the morning of 14 September 1814. He later served on the U.S. Frigate Java, was promoted Master Commandant 28 March 1820, and commanded the navy post at Erie in 1825. He died in Boston 3 September 1837.

USS Oregon (BB-3) served as flagship of President Woodrow Wilson for his review of the Pacific Fleet in Elliott Bay, Seattle, Washington.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The men standing next to the President is Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels and Captain Ivan O. Mettengel, CO of USS Oregon. "Oregon was used as the flagship of the fleet review and this was the first time a president had flown his flag in Seattle. Before arriving on USS Oregon the launch that the president was in, nearly capsized and then collided with a U.S. Navy whaleboat when casting off from the pier, none of the president's party were injured."

1942 04 18 Early launch - James Dietz
Doolittle's RaidersOne of the most daring aviation exploits of the Second World War took place on the 18th of April 1942. Led by Lt. Colonel James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, sixteen Army B-25s took off from the crowded deck of the U.S.S. Hornet and headed for their targets in Japan. This guts-and-glory mission was the culmination of four months of planning, hard work and training for the 90 volunteer crewmembers that would fly the extremely dangerous mission. It was designed not just to strike at the heart of Japan, but to bolster the sagging morale of the United States in the dark early months of World War II. It would also force Japan to reconsider its defense of the empire and lead its military into its first strategic mistake, the decision to take Midway.Assisted by Naval experts, principally Lt. Henry Miller, the "Army Crows," as they were called, started practicing carrier deck take-offs in March 1942, with their medium bombers at Elgin Field in Florida. They would need all the practice they could get. It would be the first time such large bombers would be launched from a Navy carrier on a combat mission. By the end of the month, they were ready and flew cross-country to hook up with the Navy task force waiting for them in Alameda, California. On April 1, the aircraft carried U.S.S. Hornet had been loaded with the bombers and set sail from its berth to meet the rest of its task force in the Pacific. During the next tension-filled days its proceeded to the desired launch site for the Army bombers, and for the next seventeen days, the task force sailed deep into the Japanese controlled waters. The bombers were to be launched late in the day on the 18th, close enough to Japan that they could continue east and conduct emergency landings on makeshift airfields set up for them in China. Unfortunately fate had other plans.A Japanese picket vessel sighted the task force at 7:38 a.m. Although this ship was eventually sunk by Navy gunfire, it was decided to quickly launch the Army Raiders and get the carrier task force out of harm's way, even though they were well short of their desired launch point. The B-25s had been "spotted" on the stern of the Hornet, to give them the longest possible distance for the deck launch. Frantic last minute preparations were made including additions to armament, topping off gasoline tanks and giving out extra fuel cans in hopes of making up for the additional distance they would have to fly. Navigators reviewed their maps to make the necessary adjustments in their flight plans, while pilots and co-pilots worried about their first actual carried takeoff with fully loaded B-25s.In Early Launch, Colonel Doolittle and his co-pilot, Lieutenant Richard E. Cole, who were to be the first to take off, discuss last minute instructions with Lieutenant (U.S.N.) Edgar Osborne, who was to be Launch Officer for the take-off. Other Army personnel scramble to their planes while Navy deckhands man their assigned positions for launch. All the aircraft were successfully launched off the pitching deck of the Hornet and, despite some opposition in route, reached their targets. The Japanese cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe were completely surprised by the sting of U.S. air power. The entire empire of Japan was shocked by the first of what was to become many U.S. bomber raids over its cities. The B-25s continued southeast to China where, late at night, the crews bailed out of the aircraft that were nearly out of gas. Two crews were captured by the Japanese and made to endure torture, imprisonment and death at the hands of their captors. One crew was interned in Russia, but the other crews, with heroic help from the Chinese, eventually found their way to Chungking. From there they were flown out of China and back to the United States. Many details of the raid had to be kept secret from the American people. Roosevelt even quipped that the bombers had been launched from Shangri-La, the mythical kingdom in Last Horizons. But news of the first bombing raid on Japan, even with minimal damage, was a tonic to all Americans, who were just getting over the shock and humiliation of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and subsequent losses all over the Pacific. It was as it to signal the changing tide. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "It was not the Beginning of the End, but perhaps the End of the Beginning."

REMARKS
00-04
ANCHORED IN TIEN SHA COVE, DANANG, R.V.N.
OUR LAST DAY IN VIETNAM HAS JUST COME TO AN END.
IN A SHORT TIME WE'LL HEAVE AROUND AND GET UNDERWAY
FOR A VACATION IN HONG KONG AND THEN SUBIC BAY
WE'RE SWINGING ON THE STERN HOOK ABOVE THE MUD AND THE MIRE
IN TWENTY FEET OF WATER, ON TWO HUNDRED FEET OF WIRE.
TWO-FIVE-FIVE, THREE-ONE-FOUR, AND TWO-EIGHT-NINE BEAR,
THE JETTY LIGHT, OBSERVATORY POINT AND DEEP WATER PIER.
AS I STAND ON THE BRIDGE, THE NIGHT AIR IS PLEASANT
BUT I CAN'T THINK OF A WAY TO LIST THE SHIPS PRESENT.
THE HARBOR IS LARGE, THE DARKNESS COMPLETE
SO I THINK I'LL JUST LEAVE IT AS VARIOUS UNITS--PACFLEET.
THE CREW IS ASLEEP WITH ALL HANDS ABOARD
THERE'S NO LIBERTY CALL WHEN YOU'RE FIGHTING A WAR.
CONDITION THREE WATCHES AND YOKE HAVE BEEN SET,
AND A PICKET BOAT CIRCLES TO COUNTER A THREAT.
AS THE OLD YEAR DEPARTS, AND THE NEW ONE COMES IN,
LET US HOPE THAT THE VC DON'T GO FOR A SWIM
FOR THE MIDWATCH ON NEW YEAR'S IS A ROUGH ENOUGH TIME
WITHOUT TRYING TO PUT A G.Q. INTO RHYME.

He Didn’t Tell You?![Part 1]
Summery: America sailed to Guam, expecting a battle. Little did America know that Spain forgotten to tell the Island, or that the island was a child.
Genre: Historical
historical event: America capturing Guam
A/N: Hopefully this is accurate enough! I got the imformation on wikipedia. i’ll edit it if it’s not!
—————————————————————
-June 20,1898-
“Upon the receipt of this order, which is forwarded by the steamship 'City of Pekin' to you at Honolulu, you will proceed, with the 'Charleston' and the 'City of Pekin' in company, to Manila, Philippine Islands. On your way, you are hereby directed to stop at the Spanish Island of Guam. You will use such force as may be necessary to capture the port of Guam, making prisoners of the governor and other officials and any armed force that may be there. You will also destroy any fortifications on said island and any Spanish naval vessels that may be there, or in the immediate vicinity. These operations at the Island of Guam should be very brief, and should not occupy more than one or two days. Should you find any coal at the Island of Guam, you will make such use of it as you consider desirable. It is left to your discretion whether or not you destroy it. From the Island of Guam, proceed to Manila and report to Rear-Admiral George Dewey, U.S.N., for duty in the squadron under his command.”
Those were the orders that America and Captain Henry Glass received. The men of the were excited about this operation, many scouring through the many books in the ship’s library to learn all they can about the island, America being one of them. The American heard Philippines talk about his little sister here and there, so America can’t wait to put a face to the name.
It’s a shame he might fight such a small place, it doesn’t seem something a hero would do. Not to mention Philippines might not be an ally anymore if he heard that his sister was hurt. But the warnings from T.A Hallet made the men on the USS Charleston expecting a fight the moment they land. It seems Spain really cares about Guam if he heavily fortified the place with man of wars and guns.
America’s attention was snagged away from a chart he was looking at when he heard Captain Glass call for him. They made it! The place looked beautiful! As they made their way to shore, somethings off. Where are the Man Of Wars they were warned about? The only ship he saw was one of Japan’s ships on the shore, lame! Huh...Locals are gathering on the beach..
OH SHIT! LOCALS ARE GATHERING ON THE BEACH!
AND SOME OF THEM LOOK IMPORTANT!
As they landed, the locals watched curiously as they aimed their guns at an old Spanish fortress. As the men of the USS Charleston fired 13 rounds, Don Francisco Gutierrez and Don Jose Romero looked at Captain Pedro Duarte Andurra as he shrugged his shoulder, just as confused at the situation. “They must be saluting the fort.” Captain Pedro said, nonchalant. He turned to his comrades and sent out a messenger to Agana to request for artillery to return salut.
the Spanish officials along with two locals and a merchant sailed up to the crew to welcome them. When the Men boarded the ship, Captain Henry Glass informed the group of men of the war between America and Spain. The Spanish officials were surprised when they heard of this and that they’re now prisoners of war.
“What do you mean that Spain hasn’t sent anything about the war?!” America asked. Oh boy, America and crew weren’t prepared for this.
