IDW Announces New “Star Trek” Comic
Tumblr media
IDW Publishing has announced new Star Trek comic. Star Trek hails from writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and artist Ramon Rosanas. “Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.” (IDW Publishing)
Star Trek #1 debuts in October 2022.

Welcome To The Ship Poll
Round One Master List
Round Two:
Tumblr media
Side One:
Moby Dick from One Piece VS. Ever Given from Real Life
Millennium Falcon from Star Wars VS. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)[Enterprise-D] from Star Trek
Gigantic from Zero Escape VS. Ship of Theseus from Real Life/Philosophical Thought Experiment
B'rel class Bird-of-Prey[Klingon Bird-of-Prey] from Star Trek VS. Thousand Sunny from One Piece
Side Two:
The Aurora from The Mechanisms VS. Battleship Halberd[Halberd] from Kirby
S.S. Anne from Pokémon VS. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) from Star Trek
USS Voyager from Star Trek VS. Going Merry from One Piece
Lor Starcutter from Kirby's Return to Dream Land VS. Ghost from Star Wars Rebels
So, you may know my original ship poll @bestshipsmackdown (currently doing pre-qualifying rounds to fill out eight missing spots in the official bracket), and you may be wondering, ‘Hey why are you doing a whole separate ship poll?’ And you’re right! That’s super weird of me.
However!! This time it’s not about relationships! It’s about vessels! This is all about what’s the best ship, whether it be a steamboat or space voyager! You get to submit the contestants!
General Rules:
No people or relationship ships should be submitted.
Real ships can be submitted, but I would definitely prefer if people stuck to fictional ships.
Use internet etiquette: curate your own experience. If you can’t simply block the blog and move on, when you don’t like something, you’re too young/immature to be on the internet unsupervised.
While you’re here, why don’t you check out these cool poll blogs while you’re at it!
@vs-coughing-baby @super-shapeshifter-showdown @let-them-say-fuck-tournament @best-fanfic-trope @camebackwrong-tournament @fictionalband-bracket @gender-swag-bracket @fashion-disaster-tournament @childr3ns-book-bracket @namedafterflowerstournament @least-sexy-man-competition @ultimate-poll-tournament @thecompetitionshowdowntournament @cringefailloser-tournament @lighthairdarkhair-battle @catgirlgames @dead-character-showdown @rock-swag-tournament @certified-dumbass-competition
And of course, here’s the form to submit your ships! [closed until season 2 of the bracket is ready to commence]
Have fun!

Make It So Friday
Tumblr media
Star Trek graphic novels have been published by almost all the big comic publishers. But, I think that IDW has done some of the best work. And, in that I include this TNG/DS9/Voyager era new Star Trek series.
It takes place after the Dominion war. Ben Sisko is back. And, he has been given his marching orders by the Prophets. Starfleet isn’t crazy about it, but, they give him a new ship that’s also an old ship, the USS Theseus. He also gets quite the crew. Data as his first officer, Scotty (yep, that Scotty who was stuck in a transporter for decades) as Chief Engineer, ooh, and, Beverly Crusher as the CMO. I was pleasantly surprised to see her character on here. I was also a little confused what the purpose of having Tom Paris as the Helmsman though, but, perhaps in future TPBs that’ll be explained.
Anyway, Benjamin Sisko is back to stop a godkiller, but, there are questions. Who is it, as well as the whys and hows of it all. I’m hoping that this series gets to keep going. It’s an interesting crew, and a story that has lots of ways it can go. We’ll see if the Star Trek streaming stuff gives this series (and the other ones IDW is putting out these days) a boost.

IDW Star Trek #1 (Oct 26, 2022) issue is so damn good! The basic plot is that they’re on a mission to save the “god-like” beings of the galaxy, like the Prophets and Q Continuum.
Tumblr media
(My fave of the variant covers) Overall, I’m excited for the next one and the series as a whole.
I’ll talk about specific stuff under the cut, but I’ll share this bit of Sisko and Data on the way to their new ship USS Theseus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cute that Sisko is learning about Data’s abilities and is like “So... can you cook well?” xD
A little sad that Data, upon serving under a new Captain on a new ship with a new crew, feels like he needs to head off any potential negativity towards him :(
The tragedy of Sisko coming back from the Prophets after three years, only to not be able to afford to reunite with Kasidy and his daughter Sarah (who aren’t still on DS9 with Jake). Maybe he knows if he sees them, he might be tempted to abandon the mission to be with them? :(
Sisko asking Picard for help with his vaguely-defined mission set by the Prophets, because Starfleet isn’t sure what to do with Sisko at the moment, is so great. And the parallels made between them. Perfect.
Picard being like “Okay, I’ll do my best to get you a ship and crew for your mission, but on one condition. Data is your first officer.” Then Data comes into the room, with Spot in a carrier, saying  “Hello Captain, I hope you are not allergic to cats.” xD
SCOTTY as Chief Engineer? Yes, please. He is not ready for retirement. Tom Paris as main pilot? Nice. Apparently B’Elanna wanted him to get out of the house for a while :P
The two OCs T’Lir (Vulcan science officer) and Lily Sato (Andorian comms officer) are interesting.
I guess Picard was like “Maybe Data isn’t enough. Alright, Beverly, since you really want to go, I’ll send you as his CMO.”
JAKE GOES WITH THEM! Damn right, he’s not going to let his dad go off without him after missing him for three years.
I really do like the design of these uniforms. The only thing I’m curious is why, once they accept the new ship, they change into these uniforms. Maybe they’re “vague special mission” ones?

Getting Shipshape with Starfleet Ship Shapes: Part 1
By Ames
Tumblr media
Earlier this week, I teased you with my Shark Week–themed post comparing all the classes of Starfleet ships from Star Trek to different species of sharks, and now we’re ready to dive into these shark-infested waters! For the next couple of weeks, join us as we debate how shipshape all these ship shapes really are, from the teeny tiny Oberth class to the bloated Galaxy class and everything in between.
What poor-ass timing, considering Eaglemoss model creators literally went out of business between us recording this first episode and us releasing it. Major bummer, guys.
This week, we’re starting with the originals and working through The Next Generation, so you’ll see a lot of the most instantly recognizable and famous designs in the whole franchise. Follow along below with all the different screengrabs, model designs, captures from Star Trek Timelines, etc. as you listen to our banter on this week’s podcast episode (ship chatter starts at 1:01:40). These are the adventures of the Starship Literally All Of Them. Engage!
[images © CBS/Paramount, Ex Astris Scientia, Eaglemoss Ltd., Star Trek Shipyards, Star Trek Timelines, probably others]
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise (Constitution class)
The original designers succeeded in creating a profile that is now the most recognizable ship in all of science fiction and still easy enough for a toddler to convincingly draw. All that is a feat unto its own, but it’s also got some interesting elements like the spinny spinny bussard collectors, the frisbee-lookin’ saucer section, and a cool little deflector dish that looks like a satellite dish. Sure, the whole thing looks like it will fall apart if someone looks at it cross-eyed, but it was the ship that launched a thousand… other ships.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-A (Constitution refit)
When the Enterprise got a tune-up, it came out looking brand new. Possibly because in a way, it sorta was, but that’s a Ship of Theseus debate for someone else. The new sleek Cadillac nacelles have such a more elegant look to them, and the deflector dish is now a beautiful glowing blue light instead of a small dish that looks like it’s going to snap off at any moment. Points also for having a neck and nacelle pylons that look like they’re actually supporting anything.
Tumblr media
SS Botany Bay (DY-100 class)
We don’t get a lot of other ship designs from The Original Series because their budget was tied up in ham sandwiches to pay the cast in, but an early one we do get is the cryoship Botany Bay which had a unique design that looked very old-school submarine. It was supposed to be the 90s, after all, and this thing looks like it’s been kicking around for centuries. We also like the radial frill section where the cryopods are, possibly because it reminds us of a Dilophosaurus.
Tumblr media
USS Reliant (Miranda class)
One of our earliest kitbashes! We see the Reliant in The Wrath of Khan and it’s like a Constitution class ship got taken apart and reassembled blindfolded with a ton of pieces left over. Did we need the secondary hull? Nah, we’re good with this stripped-down starship that can come with or without a rollbar. These ships are so modular you can plug-and-play all kinds of accessories, from torpedoes to sensor equipment to a harpoon gun for Khan’s white whale!
Tumblr media
USS Grissom (Oberth class)
I have such a soft spot for the Oberth class because they’re so tiny and they just get annihilated whenever they try to do basically anything. They also look like they’re surfboarding wherever they go like a catamaran in space! It’s rather fascinating that their secondary hull isn’t connected to the rest of the ship except by narrow nacelle pylons, making us question if/how crewmembers can even get down there if they need to? But who cares? This thing is just too cute for sense!
Tumblr media
USS Excelsior (Excelsior class)
This ship is pretty much the reason my Shark Week bonus content exists, because those long-ass nacelles just look like the long-ass fin on a Thresher Shark. Beyond that, the top-of-the-line Excelsior lives up to its hype by just being a really visually appealing ship, with lovely blue detailing, generally fast-looking shape, and incredibly sleek secondary hull that looks like a luxury cruiseliner. This is a ship that lives the high life, until Scotty gets his hands on it.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-B (Excelsior refit)
By the time we get to Generations, the beautiful Excelsior class has really let itself go, with lovehandles on its engineering section from all the junk in its trunk. It’s such a fatty now that it needs additional impulse engines cluttering up the rump of the saucer. Mostly, I’m disappointed because the plot-driven reason they adjusted it is so flimsy. That tiny protrusion that the Nexus lops off just strikes me as illogical and they should have just used a different ship class or something (maybe the Curry). That said, the turquoise trim is nice.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-D (Galaxy class)
In Chris’s least favorite Enterprise (yes, he ranked them before in one of our early blogposts), the proportions are all bloated like a Windstar minivan with room for your whole family for some reason! Even in universe, it doesn’t make a ton of sense. The saucer section is just so massive and top-heavy and egg shaped that it looks like it’s going to topple over under all that weight, even in zero gravity! Even the nacelle pylons look clunky compared to the graceful pylons of past ship classes.
Tumblr media
USS Stargazer (Constellation class)
On the podcast, Jake makes the comment that someone ate two model kits of the Enterprise-A and vomited them back up as one ship. Is it a little bit ridiculous to have a starship with four sideways nacelles or is it brilliant because now you have backup nacelles in case one or two ever break down? It’s probably a little bit of both. It’s nice to see the rounded saucer again now that we’ve gotten used to the big oval Galaxy class saucer.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-C (Ambassador class)
Do you even lift, bro? Get ready for war with the… Klingons? Romulans? EVERYONE?! Ambassador class starships are just the weightlifters of Starfleet, with significant muscle and firepower specifically for wartime. It’s a decent midpoint between the B and the D in terms of shape and successfully instills the sense that starships have evolved based on their needs at any given time.
Tumblr media
USS Bozeman (Soyuz class)
Soyuz class is just a modified Miranda class with a whole bunch of new sensing and communicating equipment stapled on. Sure, we continuously mistake all these sensor pods for railguns because of their counterintuitive shape, but the Bozeman is supposed to be primarily a research vessel. Jury’s still out on determining if this was why the ship was designed this way or if that’s just a retcon to sell more toys. Regardless, we’re pretty sure Captain Bateson is listening.
Tumblr media
USS Sutherland, USS Phoenix (Nebula class)
Another fairly modular ship is the Nebula class ship, which comes with different styles of attachable endtable on which you can put down your coffee that I hear comes in these things, doncha know. The look of them still suffers from the same bloat that comes with the Galaxy class that these ships were pretty obviously kitbashed out of. It’s like the Enterprise-D had folded itself up to sit at a picnic table.
Tumblr media
USS Pasteur (Olympic class)
It’s kinda interesting that the medical ship is so visually distinct from most other starships (except the barely glimpsed Daedalus class ship), with a big Epcot Center sphere instead of a saucer. That big golf ball overwhelms the rest of the shape a little bit since it’s such a massive thing, but it also makes us wonder if having a different shape insinuates to enemies not to fire on the floating hospital because war crimes. Not that that stops some people.
We’re picking up next week with more starship chatter from the TNG movies through the rest of 90s Trek, so make sure you’re following along here to catch a ride on all your favorite ships! Also keep up with our watch through of Voyager over on SoundCloud or wherever you pick up your favorite podcast on your sensor pods, open your comms on Facebook and Twitter, and watch out for exploding Oberths.

Captain Data: “I am experiencing overwhelming stress.”
Tumblr media
Idol ⭐️ Hands: note, I believe Data is modeling himself after Captain Sisko’s style of leadership here — as earlier, Sisko, laughed at Commander Data’s suggestion to consult Starfleet’s admirals before heading into a potentially fabric-of-reality-altering situation. As text is smaller below (a two-page spread), I’ve transcribed the dialog.
Tumblr media
Acting Captain Data: Ensign Sato, broadcast Starfleet evacuation codes to all affected planets with my over-ride authorization.
Ensign Sato (the Andorian): Yes, sir.
Acting Captain Data: Additionally, broadcast the sub space frequencies of all nearby Starfleet vessels so they can be coordinated with directly.
Ensign Sato: Help is on the way!
Acting Captain Data: Lieutenant Descheeni, reassign all personnel from sciences and research to communications and telemetry. Transfer display protocols rather than physically relocating staff.
Lt. Descheeni: Clever, Captain.
Acting Captain Data: Simply necessary, Lieutenant. They will assist in efforts by Ensign Sato to coordinate evacuating in local language and custom as well as aid Ensign T’lr’s upcoming calculations.
Ensign T’lr (the Vulcan): Speaking of which, sir. I have a trajectory that might allow us to alter the course of the creature slightly by affecting their warp field stability, like a gentle nudge.
It will not change where they are going, but it should affect less inhabited systems.
Acting Captain Data: That is acceptable. Execute. And, Mr. Paris?
Lt. Paris: Don’t gotta tell me what to do, Captain. I’m the first human to ever achieve trans warp flight. I can handle the turbulence. The problem is going to be keeping up.
I can feel the engines, Commander. They’re not up to this.
Acting Captain Data: Mr. Scott, to address this, please activate the the Theseus’ classified propulsion system.
Chief Engineer Scott: I dinnae know what you’re talking ab—
Acting Captain Data: I looked over your design as soon as I was assigned, sir. It is incumbent on a first officer to know everything about his ship.
And while such a classified marker would no doubt deter most, my best friend is a decorated warp drive engineer. And so I was able to infer the use of the redacted capsules near each of the Theseus’ warp nacelles.
I was also able to infer that they were classified because they were, in fact, not yet working.
Chief Engineer Scott: Aye. Torres tried to get it working for months, but the containment frequencies never held.
Lt. Paris: Wait, B’elanna Torres? Like, my wife, B’elanna Torres? This was her little ‘side project’?
Chief Engineer Scott (on speaker): Aye, laddie. She said if you behaved, she’d let ye design the Bridge canopy.
Acting Captain Data: I have just relayed to you containment frequencies that I believe will solve the problem.
Chief Engineer Scott: It...it works. My God...
Acting Captain Data: No, Mr. Scott. Simply an android. Now, if you would be so kind, please take the vessel to transwarp.
Chief Engineer Scott: Way ahead of ye, Captain. But one little correction...like I always said, transwarp’s nothing but a dead end.
We call this little beauty...proto-warp!

Acting Captain Data: “I am experiencing pride.”

Some of the clearest examples of the differences between the USS Discovery’s original design and the Discovery-A refit can be seen when comparing the opening credits of Season 1 and Season 4. The additional hull detailing is what first caught my eye, and then there’s:
The detached nacelles, obvs., but also those cutouts that are (for some reason) at the end of the nacelle pylons?
No catwalks connecting the saucer section’s outer ring, now that everyone has a personal transporter, and the windows on the outside of the inside of the ring (?) are now vertical instead of slanted (à la your Galaxy-class, where every stateroom feels like sleeping in the attic)
The bit at the very top of the saucer is flatter, and so is the ridge that runs down the back of the “neck” of the ship
Bonus fun fact that reveals the Ship-of-Theseus nature of these sequences: the Disco’s original design still appears a few times in the Season 4 credits—watch her silhouette for the intra-saucer catwalks vs. the detached nacelles :D
Still a handsome lady, still wish I could kiss her and squeeze her
Watch the episode? When I have starships to hyperfixate on? How dare you
