Plymouth Reliant
In this Aug. 7, 1980, file photo, Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee Iacocca with the first K Car, a Plymouth Reliant, in Detroit. Former Chrysler CEO Iacocca became a folk hero for rescuing the company. Lee Iacocca and Joe Czar (Production Manager at right) drove the first K Car offline at the Chrysler Jefferson Plant. The Chrysler K platform was developed just as the company faltered in the market, at first underpinning a modest range of compact/mid-size sedans and wagons—and eventually underpinning nearly fifty different models, including all-wheel drive variants. The right car at the right time. They were initially very profitable, and Iacocca credited them with allowing the company to pay off its bankruptcy loans early.
Following the 1973 oil crisis, compounded by the 1979 energy crisis, American consumers began to buy fuel-efficient, low-cost automobiles built in Japan. With the market for large V-8 engined cars declining, American domestic auto manufacturers found themselves trying to develop compact vehicles that could compete with the Japanese imports of Toyota, Honda, and Nissan in price and finish. The K-cars (Dodge Aries, Plymouth Reliant, Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge 400, and, in Mexico, Dodge Dart) sold over 2 million vehicles from 1981 to 1988

Atlas: How Truama Changed Me
I always need to play hero
It’s how I keep things in control
Mending things gives me value
It’s how I pay for your approval
But it will never be enough
Love is highly conditional
Trauma put the world on my shoulders
I didn’t get to choose
The weight gives me a purpose
It’s an outlet for my own needs
This is my new identity
Self-punishment is part of me
You say “when will you do what you want”
But i’ll alway try to fix everything
You are my responsibility
What I can do takes precedence over agency
Your problems become mine
I don’t get to choose me
Trauma put the world on my shoulders
I didn’t get to choose
The weight gives me a purpose
It’s an outlet for my own needs
This is my new identity
Self-punishment is part of me
Everything is my fault
I’m the only one who can do this
The pressure is on me
I have an Atlas complex
No need for concern
I’ll torture myself with people’s issues
To keep the earth in turn
Go check out my other works in my myths and legends series!

Getting Shipshape with Starfleet Ship Shapes: Part 1
By Ames
Tumblr media
Earlier this week, I teased you with my Shark Week–themed post comparing all the classes of Starfleet ships from Star Trek to different species of sharks, and now we’re ready to dive into these shark-infested waters! For the next couple of weeks, join us as we debate how shipshape all these ship shapes really are, from the teeny tiny Oberth class to the bloated Galaxy class and everything in between.
What poor-ass timing, considering Eaglemoss model creators literally went out of business between us recording this first episode and us releasing it. Major bummer, guys.
This week, we’re starting with the originals and working through The Next Generation, so you’ll see a lot of the most instantly recognizable and famous designs in the whole franchise. Follow along below with all the different screengrabs, model designs, captures from Star Trek Timelines, etc. as you listen to our banter on this week’s podcast episode (ship chatter starts at 1:01:40). These are the adventures of the Starship Literally All Of Them. Engage!

Tumblr media
USS Enterprise (Constitution class)
The original designers succeeded in creating a profile that is now the most recognizable ship in all of science fiction and still easy enough for a toddler to convincingly draw. All that is a feat unto its own, but it’s also got some interesting elements like the spinny spinny bussard collectors, the frisbee-lookin’ saucer section, and a cool little deflector dish that looks like a satellite dish. Sure, the whole thing looks like it will fall apart if someone looks at it cross-eyed, but it was the ship that launched a thousand… other ships.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-A (Constitution refit)
When the Enterprise got a tune-up, it came out looking brand new. Possibly because in a way, it sorta was, but that’s a Ship of Theseus debate for someone else. The new sleek Cadillac nacelles have such a more elegant look to them, and the deflector dish is now a beautiful glowing blue light instead of a small dish that looks like it’s going to snap off at any moment. Points also for having a neck and nacelle pylons that look like they’re actually supporting anything.
Tumblr media
SS Botany Bay (DY-100 class)
We don’t get a lot of other ship designs from The Original Series because their budget was tied up in ham sandwiches to pay the cast in, but an early one we do get is the cryoship Botany Bay which had a unique design that looked very old-school submarine. It was supposed to be the 90s, after all, and this thing looks like it’s been kicking around for centuries. We also like the radial frill section where the cryopods are, possibly because it reminds us of a Dilophosaurus.
Tumblr media
USS Reliant (Miranda class)
One of our earliest kitbashes! We see the Reliant in The Wrath of Khan and it’s like a Constitution class ship got taken apart and reassembled blindfolded with a ton of pieces left over. Did we need the secondary hull? Nah, we’re good with this stripped-down starship that can come with or without a rollbar. These ships are so modular you can plug-and-play all kinds of accessories, from torpedoes to sensor equipment to a harpoon gun for Khan’s white whale!
Tumblr media
USS Grissom (Oberth class)
I have such a soft spot for the Oberth class because they’re so tiny and they just get annihilated whenever they try to do basically anything. They also look like they’re surfboarding wherever they go like a catamaran in space! It’s rather fascinating that their secondary hull isn’t connected to the rest of the ship except by narrow nacelle pylons, making us question if/how crewmembers can even get down there if they need to? But who cares? This thing is just too cute for sense!
Tumblr media
USS Excelsior (Excelsior class)
This ship is pretty much the reason my Shark Week bonus content exists, because those long-ass nacelles just look like the long-ass fin on a Thresher Shark. Beyond that, the top-of-the-line Excelsior lives up to its hype by just being a really visually appealing ship, with lovely blue detailing, generally fast-looking shape, and incredibly sleek secondary hull that looks like a luxury cruiseliner. This is a ship that lives the high life, until Scotty gets his hands on it.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-B (Excelsior refit)
By the time we get to Generations, the beautiful Excelsior class has really let itself go, with lovehandles on its engineering section from all the junk in its trunk. It’s such a fatty now that it needs additional impulse engines cluttering up the rump of the saucer. Mostly, I’m disappointed because the plot-driven reason they adjusted it is so flimsy. That tiny protrusion that the Nexus lops off just strikes me as illogical and they should have just used a different ship class or something (maybe the Curry). That said, the turquoise trim is nice.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-D (Galaxy class)
In Chris’s least favorite Enterprise (yes, he ranked them before in one of our early blogposts), the proportions are all bloated like a Windstar minivan with room for your whole family for some reason! Even in universe, it doesn’t make a ton of sense. The saucer section is just so massive and top-heavy and egg shaped that it looks like it’s going to topple over under all that weight, even in zero gravity! Even the nacelle pylons look clunky compared to the graceful pylons of past ship classes.
Tumblr media
USS Stargazer (Constellation class)
On the podcast, Jake makes the comment that someone ate two model kits of the Enterprise-A and vomited them back up as one ship. Is it a little bit ridiculous to have a starship with four sideways nacelles or is it brilliant because now you have backup nacelles in case one or two ever break down? It’s probably a little bit of both. It’s nice to see the rounded saucer again now that we’ve gotten used to the big oval Galaxy class saucer.
Tumblr media
USS Enterprise-C (Ambassador class)
Do you even lift, bro? Get ready for war with the… Klingons? Romulans? EVERYONE?! Ambassador class starships are just the weightlifters of Starfleet, with significant muscle and firepower specifically for wartime. It’s a decent midpoint between the B and the D in terms of shape and successfully instills the sense that starships have evolved based on their needs at any given time.
Tumblr media
USS Bozeman (Soyuz class)
Soyuz class is just a modified Miranda class with a whole bunch of new sensing and communicating equipment stapled on. Sure, we continuously mistake all these sensor pods for railguns because of their counterintuitive shape, but the Bozeman is supposed to be primarily a research vessel. Jury’s still out on determining if this was why the ship was designed this way or if that’s just a retcon to sell more toys. Regardless, we’re pretty sure Captain Bateson is listening.
Tumblr media
USS Sutherland, USS Phoenix (Nebula class)
Another fairly modular ship is the Nebula class ship, which comes with different styles of attachable endtable on which you can put down your coffee that I hear comes in these things, doncha know. The look of them still suffers from the same bloat that comes with the Galaxy class that these ships were pretty obviously kitbashed out of. It’s like the Enterprise-D had folded itself up to sit at a picnic table.
Tumblr media
USS Pasteur (Olympic class)
It’s kinda interesting that the medical ship is so visually distinct from most other starships (except the barely glimpsed Daedalus class ship), with a big Epcot Center sphere instead of a saucer. That big golf ball overwhelms the rest of the shape a little bit since it’s such a massive thing, but it also makes us wonder if having a different shape insinuates to enemies not to fire on the floating hospital because war crimes. Not that that stops some people.
We’re picking up next week with more starship chatter from the TNG movies through the rest of 90s Trek, so make sure you’re following along here to catch a ride on all your favorite ships! Also keep up with our watch through of Voyager over on SoundCloud or wherever you pick up your favorite podcast on your sensor pods, open your comms on Facebook and Twitter, and watch out for exploding Oberths.

When I finally found a group of people who I didn't think were taking advantage of me, I let myself become reliant. I thought it was good because I finally trusted someone. But I misjudged them. I used to be like this with my previous group, but I was stupid and didn't realize that it's a repeat. I tried giving myself the illusion of control, and I made the situation worse. And now the person who made me realize that I'm demiromantic, not completely aro, is...
