September 11th, and every USAmerican is thinking about the anniversary of the Battle of Lake Champlain: September 11, 1814. At the same time U.S. Navy Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough defeated the British fleet, the U.S. Army triumphed at the Battle of Plattsburgh.

M'donough's Victory on Lake Champlain, 1846 lithograph (Naval History and Heritage Command).
Enemy fire eventually silenced all of the guns on one side of the Saratoga. At this point, Macdonough performed the masterstroke that turned the tide in the battle, winding his flagship around so that he could bring fresh guns to bear on the British ships. Lieutenant James Robertson, who had taken command of the Confiance after Downie’s death, tried to bring his flagship around by employing the same maneuver, but without advance preparation his lines became fouled and his ship immobilized. The Saratoga relentlessly pounded the British ship with broadside after broadside. The fire was so intense that a British marine who had been at Trafalgar claimed that “that was a mere flea-bite in comparison with this.”
— Donald R. Hickey, The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict

View of torpedo damage to USS SARATOGA (CV-3), while in dry dock at Pearl Harbor. Her hull was given a temporary patch for her trip to Puget Sound Navy Yard for permanent repairs.
Tumblr media
SARATOGA was about 420 nautical miles (780 km; 480 mi) southwest of Pearl Harbor, when she was hit by a torpedo fired by I-6. The explosion flooded three boiler rooms and killed 6 crewmen. Her crew was able to close off those areas and reduce the ship's list. Her speed was reduced to 16 knots and she returned to Pearl Harbor two days later.

This is the wheehouse of the US aircraft carrier Saratoga at Bikini Atoll. The slits are battle covers over the porthole openings. The ship's wheel has rotted away, but everything else was still there when this photo was taken in the early 2000s.

I have bad memory and I know posted this question once but I CANT FIND IT. So uh, would america blow up it's own ships after retirement? Because anyway the vehicles on land barely give a shit according to my hcs about ships.
Like this question is mainly because I'm woc-fying USS Saratoga (CV-3) and USS America (CV-66) and both of them were used in experiments. Saratoga was used in a nuclear bomb test and Bikini atoll and America was bombarded in a live firing test and was blown by explosives. LIKE HOW INHUMANE IS THAT ESP FOR THOSE WHO SERVED UR NATION? And no way in hell would Kittyhawk class carrier allow the navy to even use America in such a way.
Been thinking like Kittyhawk and others absolutely refused to allow that to happen to America cause like, imagine being alive and killed BY YOUR OWN NAVY? Conscience will haunt them, and THAT'S THEIR SISTER SHIP RIGHT THERE. She was scuttled btw, so what if they just tested on her for awhile and then let her before too serious to be alive injuries?? Idk help

On todays episode of "Little known US History events"....
June 8th, 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attack the USS Liberty in international waters off Egypt’s Gaza Strip. The intelligence ship, well-marked as an American vessel and only lightly armed, was attacked first by Israeli aircraft that fired napalm and rockets at the ship. The Liberty attempted to radio for assistance, but the Israeli aircraft blocked the transmissions. Eventually, the ship was able to make contact with the U.S. carrier Saratoga, and 12 fighter jets and four tanker planes were dispatched to defend the Liberty.
When word of their deployment reached Washington, however, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered them recalled to the carrier, and they never reached the Liberty. The reason for the recall remains unclear. Back in the Mediterranean, the initial air raid against the Liberty was over. Nine of the 294 crewmembers were dead and 60 were wounded. Suddenly, the ship was attacked by Israeli torpedo boats, which launched torpedoes and fired artillery at the ship. Under the command of its wounded captain, William L. McGonagle, the Liberty managed to avert four torpedoes, but one struck the ship at the waterline. Heavily damaged, the ship launched three lifeboats, but these were also attacked. Failing to sink the Liberty, which displaced 10,000 tons, the Israelis finally desisted. In all, 34 Americans were killed and 171 were wounded in the two-hour attack. In the attack’s aftermath, the Liberty managed to limp to a safe port.
