Description: As a 26-year old Marine radar intercept officer (RIO), Fleet Lentz flew 131 combat missions in the back seat of the supersonic F-4 B Phantom II during the wind-down of the Vietnam War. Overcoming military regulations, he and his fellow Marines at The Rose Garden (Royal Thai Air Base Nam Phong) kept sorely needed supplies moving in while moving combat troops out of Southeast Asia. His personal and accessible memoir describes how pilots and RIOs executed dangerous air-to-ground bombing missions in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos—quite different from the air-to-air warfare for which they had trained—and kept themselves mission-capable (and human) while surviving harsh circumstances.
Review: This book should actually have been called A Frontseat View of Nam Phong. The amount he wrote on flying and being in the air and in combat is miniscule - barely a footnote - when compared to his detailed rememberances of people, what they did at the bar, what he did as a building inspector on base, and details on scrounging for stuff at Cubi Point and elsewhere. But to really get a feel of what it was like to fly combat in Laos and Cambodia and both South and North Vietnam, you'd better get a different book because this one barely mentions any of that. Definitely a 2 star book simply because of the misleading title and description. If this was supposed to be a book about life at an Air Base, it'd be a 3 at least, but NOPE.

March 1969:  Marine F-4 Phantoms from VMFA-232 “Red Devils” being refueled by KC-130s over the Johnson Islands while on transpacific flight to Vietnam. The aircraft at front of picture – 155811- was the only Marine jet shot down by MiGs during the Vietnam war.   “Lt Sam Cordova , 28, (pic 2) was the pilot of an F4J fighter jet shot down over Laos on August 26, 1972. His plane was downed on the border of Laos and Vietnam in Houa Phan Province near the city of Sop Hoa. His F-4J was BuNo 155811, and he was shot down by a MiG-21, the only Marine jet ever to be lost to enemy aircraft during the Vietnam War. Cordova was part of a two-plane flight.  The NVAF pilot who shot him down was Nguyen Duc Soat (26), of the 3rd Company, and it was his fifth of six aerial kills. Lt. Cordova spoke to U.S. aircraft in the area over his survival radio while safely parachuting from his aircraft. He later radioed that he had fallen into a ravine and heard his pursuers approaching. According to a member of Cordova's squadron, Sam Cordova's last transmission stated that he was going to be captured if he wasn't picked up immediately.   Cordova's back-seater – Lt Darrell Borders - was rescued, but rescue attempts for Cordova were hampered because of heavy ground fire. Sam's emergency radio beeper was traced to Ban Na Ca Tay, a Viet Cong village. Attempts to contact him through the device failed.  This seemed clear indication that Cordova was  captured, but he was classified Missing in Action.” Src POW Network.   On December 15th 1988, the remains of Maj. Sam Cordova were returned home to be buried in American soil. 📷Feel free to repost but please remember to tag us 👍😊 #aircraft #airforce #airshow #avgeek #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationgeek #aviationhistory #aviationlovers #aviationphotos #avnerd #instaaviation #militaryaviation #militaryaviationphotography #oldairplanes #navalaviator #navalaviation #fighterpilot #warbird #warbirds #f4phantom #kc130 #c130 https://www.instagram.com/p/CSRjLUbBFC8/?utm_medium=tumblr

Southwest Asia (Mar. 21, 2003) -- A U.S. Marine Crops F/A-18 Hornet assigned to the "Red Devils" of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron Two Three Two (VMFA-232) continues on its mission after taking fuel from an Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker in the skies near Iraq while conducting a mission in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Hornet is primarily used as a fighter escort and fleet air defense. However, it can also be used as an attack aircraft with the capability of force projection, interdiction, as well as both close and deep air support. This duel capability gives commanders immense flexibility in wartime operations. Operation Iraqi Freedom is the multi-national coalition effort to liberate the Iraqi people, eliminate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, and end the regime of Saddam Hussein. 155848 1968 McDonnell-Douglas F-4S Phantom ll US Marine Corps East Fortune 05.11.02 by Phil Rawlings Via Flickr: 155848 first flew in 1968 as an F-4J and flew as such with the US Navy before being converted to F-4S standard and transferring to the US Marine Corps in 1978. In 1983 she was retired and the Fleet Air Arm Museum acquired her not long afterwards in a strange deal that saw Scimitar XD220 crossing the pond in the opposite direction. Initially painted in RN colours and displayed at the museum, when they got hold of FG.1 XT596, this F-4 became surplus to requirements and languished on the airfield for a long time while all and sundry fought over her and it was possible she was going to be scrapped. However the National Museum of Flight won the battle and she was handed over to them in May 1999. She's displayed in the colours of the USMC's VMFA 232.
