this pretty widdle blue flower would’ve been just another unknown volunteer plant, but since i was trying to find out how the heck to find the seeds on my veronicas, i came across a variety of veronica called “corn speedwell” (veronica arvensis) and darn if this isn’t it! i also learned that it is an antiscorbutic, used to treat scrofulous affections, and for healing whitlows and mitigating painful piles. then i had to look up what all that jibjab meant. antiscorbutic means it treats scurvy; scrofula is a disease with glandular swellings, probably a form of tuberculosis; whitlows are abscesses in the soft tissue near a fingernail or toenail; and piles are inflamed hemorrhoids. the more you know!

They all grow in Vaqueiro territory except the geraniums and the potentilla bc the store wasnt selling any species that are in VT but the genuses (genae??) grow there. They all had to be little species bc im growing them in small pots. Hoping they grow okay inside bc they are all alpine plants. I don't really need them to last forever bc i want to collect their seeds. I can have exponential seeds but anagallis has at least six different color forms and the others have dif colors and i wanna see what i can get through selective breeding i love mendelian genetics

My parents have two big pots outside and im going to plant something local in them but germinate them inside. Idk what exactly yet except i am doing Monarda citriodora since its a native plant and i already have seeds i collected from the seed pods in the winter near my house.

Idk this is just my plant diary this is what ive been doing the past days

Wall Speedwell - Veronica arvensis

Another tiny speedwell, but unlike Thyme-leafed Speedwell (12 April) this one has hairy leaves. Found growing between the cracks in paving. The flowers are an intense blue. I think this is Wall Speedwell, though Wall Speedwell is described as growing erect. I will have to come back when it has fruits - Wall Speedwell has flat, heart-shaped fruits.

Hello Sunday 👋

Woke up, had some breakfast and then watched @atheycreek live for Church this morning 🌄

Athey Creek Christian Fellowship is my absolute favorite when it comes to learning about the Bible. I struggled so much at understanding what I was reading, I struggled at finding a church where I feel like I'd fit in at and I believe God showed me their page because Pastor Brett Meador goes into so much detail and I can easily follow along and understand everything. Also here's some Veronica arvensis, cute little blue flower that's growing in my backyard 💙

They usually get mowed down before I see them bloom. I've never noticed so much beauty in something so small, I just never payed attention but I've started looking closer at all things around me and noticing every detail that God himself has gone into when creating even the tiniest things. Every detail no matter how big or small, is beautiful in every way.

Speedwell Array

On day 361 of 365 Days Wild I spotted some new speedwell flowers growing in the grass outside work. These are, I think, Corn Speedwell (Veronica arvensis). en blaast het richting de voorbijgangers

Dan volgt hij de pluisjes omlaag naar de grond met zijn vingers en begint een monoloog over de groei van planten en de noodzaak van insecten en onkruid

voor mijn moeder tekenen met papier lijm en zand? Ze vindt films over astronauten wel gaaf

Ze begonnen langzaam weer verder te lopen en na een tijdje bleef Poa staan en bukte zich naar het gras, daar zul je hem hebben zegt ze en wijst naar een klein wit bloemetje

Ik ook niet, maar deskundigen kunnen aan de vorm van het blad, de kleurverschillen en de groeiplaats wel minuscule verschillen in een plant ontdekken en die informatie delen met de computer zodat er slimme apps gemaakt kunnen worden

Klinkt in het Nederlands bijna als Eureka ik ben prikkelbaar 

De brandnetel is familie van de dove netel, maar de dove wou zo graag puur blijven en daarom prikt hij niet. 

Um, is de verteller is tevreden.

Smiling Irish Eyes

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and Irish Eyes are smiling.  St. Patrick’s Day is more than a day for green clothing, green beer, shamrocks, leprechauns, and pots of gold, although I wouldn’t mind having my own pot of gold right about now. This is a day to celebrate and learn about Irish culture, traditions, and history.  By participating in the many celebrations and parades and enjoying the food, drinks, music, and dancing that define Irish culture, St. Patrick’s Day can be a day of fun and learning.  As I kickoff the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my favorite wildflowers that are native to Ireland.

Here are a few more species of speedwell (Veronica) that are common in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Some of these are common weeds you find in the garden. The top photo is of Persian Speedwell (Veronica Persica) which is a non-native species. The second photo down is of Field Speedwell (Veronica Arvensis) which is another introduced species. The lower photos are of Thyme-Leaved Speedwell (Veronica Serpyllifolia) which includes two varieties. The pale-flowered variety is not native to this area, while the blue-flowered variety is native.
