WEEK THIRTEEN
The semester has come to an end, and it has been quite the journey! I am so glad I was able to publish this blog and share the interesting things I have come across in my internship with you. Tracing back to January, I said that a few of my goals were to deep dive into the how's and why’s of each case to further strengthen my foundation of veterinary medicine and hopefully teach you something new. Looking over a few of my previous posts, from mast cell tumors to vaccines to TPLO’s is has been a very interesting semester! I feel that I have achieved my goal of deep diving into the cases. It has been very refreshing to brush off my pathophysiology and break down different parts of it. Some roadblocks I've encountered along the way have been trying to figure out what to write about next, even if the week was slow. Looking deeper into this reminds me that I don't always need a cool and dynamic case to write about something interesting. Veterinary Medicine is dynamic as it is and there are a million things to write about. To think of how far I've come as a student to a licensed technologist is bizarre! It's always a great reminder to think that everyone has started somewhere and that it's ok to brush up on your basics every once in a while. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing just a few of the cases I have seen with you and I hope you have learned a few things as well. In the future, I hope to continue this blog and publish even more case studies and even some basic things to keep the foundation strong.
Cheers to a beautiful spring and soon, graduation!!

Lion kills OAU veterinary worker during feeding
Tumblr media
The veterinary technologist in charge of the Zoological Garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, has been killed by a lion on the campus. The management of the institution in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, explained that the incident happened when the deceased was feeding the animals in their den at the garden. Olanrewaju said other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue the deceased, but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities on his body. The statement party read, “The management, staff, students and the entire campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been thrown into mourning following the untimely death of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi. “A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Mr Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist, who had been in charge of the Zoological Garden for over a decade, was attacked this afternoon, Monday, February 19, 2024, by a nine-year-old male lion when he was feeding them in their den at the Zoological Garden of the university. “The other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities.” we gathered that on hearing the sad news, the management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Simeon Bamire, abruptly ended their meeting for an on-the-spot assessment. “Bamire was informed, on arrival, by the acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive. “Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive lion has been euthanised. Mr Olawuyi had been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about nine years ago but, tragically, the male lion killed the man who had been feeding them. The university said it had sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life. “Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident,” the statement further read. 60% Rabies Vaccinations Yields Healing for Sarangani
Tumblr media
Sarangani has reached over 60% rabies vaccination coverage on dogs for two straight years. Federico Yadao, Medical Technologist II and Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit Disease Surveillance Officer, cited this as a good indication towards the province’s rabies elimination plan consistent with the Department of Health’s target to free Philippines from rabies by 2030 and the 80% vaccination coverage indicator that the World Health Organization had set to successfully achieve rabies global control. From the 46,138 dog population in Sarangani in 2020, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVET) vaccinated 28,421 or 61.60% in 2021. While, 62.18% or 27,917 were vaccinated in 2022 out of the 44,895 reported population in 2021. As of March, 1,950 dogs were already vaccinated based on the 32,256 dog population in 2022. There were also 1,249 cats vaccinated in 2022 which composed 6.25% of the 19,976 population recorded in 2021. As of March, 55 cats were administered with anti-rabies vaccines based on the 3,856 population in 2022. In the Philippines, Dr. Bernard Cababat, Sarangani’s officer-in-charge Provincial Veterinarian, said dogs are responsible for 98% of cases of rabies virus transmitted to humans, while the remaining two percent were caused by bites of cats and other animals.
Tumblr media
Rabies rally. Photo by Jake T. Narte of Sarangani Provincial Information Office.   Dr. Cababat said they are stepping up efforts to eliminate the disease by urging Sarangans to vaccinate their dogs and cats especially that “rabies is 100% fatal but 100% preventable.” Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease affecting the central nervous system.   Federico Yadao, Medical Technologist II and Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit Disease Surveillance Officer said: “We really do not want to have fatality dahil doon as preventable disease” and cited their collaboration with the Department of Education Sarangani Division." “With DepEd, mas more tayo sa control. Mas more tayo sa preventive na mga activities, rather than curative.”   From 2019 to 2021, the Provincial Health Office reported a total of 4,583 animal bite patients administered with post exposure prophylaxis and 17 deaths distributed as eight in 2019, one in 2020, and eight in 2021. Although Yadao said this is not “alarming” since post exposure prophylaxis are available, but he encouraged everyone to: “limit exposure by being responsible pet owners. Kung ano lang ang kayang alagaan, ‘yun lang ang alagaan.”   The massive vaccination drive is in line with the celebration of the Rabies Awareness Month, but Dr. Cababat pointed out they are doing vaccination all year round in partnership with the offices of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG), where the program is lodged. Rabies Awareness Month, this year, is anchored on the theme "Rabies-free na pusa't aso, kaligtasan ng pamilyang Pilipino." As part of the campaign, the Provincial Veterinary Office and offices of the Municipal Agriculturist in Malungon held an information drive dubbed as Pet Talks at Malalag Cogon National High School on March 28. Dr. Cababat emphasized the importance of making students agents of the right information about rabies. He said they have considerable leverage to spread the information “being active on social media.” If anyone is bitten by suspected rabid animals, Dr. Cababat advises to directly go to the nearest Municipal Health Office or hospital for assessment and proper medical care.   Sources: THX News & Philippine Information Agency. Students at Allegany can join the MLT Club at the school. Students also take a trip to the Regional Red Cross Facility in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, during their blood banking class. In the traditional track, students complete 13 courses specific to MLT, one of which includes an internship. Allegany College offers a traditional associate’s degree route, a biotechnology degree option, a biotechnology certificate, and a fast-track MLT program for those who have already completed their general education courses. If admitted, students begin their medical lab technician coursework mid-May, finishing over a 16-month period that features lectures, labs, and clinical coursework.Īllegany College of Maryland – With locations in Cumberland, Maryland, and Everett and Somerset, Pennsylvania, Allegany College of Maryland gives students the opportunity to complete an MLT program in a few different ways. The application period is January 1 to March 15 annually. From there, students can apply for acceptance into the program, but admission is fairly competitive, given that there are just 20 spaces each year. Accreditation: National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)Įl Centro College – Located in Dallas, Texas, El Centro College offers an associate of applied science (AAS) degree in MLT but requires students to complete 39 credits in general education courses and health-related courses in the first two semesters.Location: Folsom, Placerville, and Rancho Cordova, CA.Folsom Lake’s MLT degree should help prepare students to sit for the national certifying exam available through the ASCP. Sample courses include clinical microbiology, hematology, and clinical chemistry and urinalysis. In all, ten med tech classes, including four practicums, are completed in the program. The first two semesters consist of didactic coursework followed by a semester of rotations, but these rotations do not align with the school’s typical fall/spring calendar. There are many different programs available in the U.S.īelow are listed just six of the medical lab technician schools offering programs, although there are many more to choose from:įolsom Lake College – With campuses in Folsom, Placerville, and Rancho Cordova, the MLT program at this California-based school leads to an associate of science (AS) degree in medical technology and can take anywhere between 18 to 24 months to complete. Most associate degree programs can be completed in about two years, but some fast-track programs are also available to students, particularly those who already have training in a related healthcare field, such as nursing. Medical lab technicians typically need an associate’s degree to obtain entry-level work in the field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Degree & Certification Programs Keep reading for details on MLT programs in the U.S., including online options for working professionals.Īssociate's Degree (Technician) or Bachelor's Degree (Technologist) In order to become eligible for an entry-level position, prospective MLTs typically must complete a minimum of a two-year associate’s degree program. These can range from hospital labs to research labs as well as veterinary labs and even public health facilities. Once medical lab technicians have the skills needed for employment, one of the exciting aspects of their job is the ability to work in a wide variety of environments. Not the least of these is the medical laboratory technician, or MLT, who conducts a variety of lab tests to help with the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of conditions as varied as AIDS, cancer, and diabetes.Įntry-level MLTs perform routine clinical lab tests that include hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, serology/immunology, and other diagnostic tests. While no one can deny the importance of physicians, surgeons, and nurses, there are a number of other healthcare professionals who work behind the scenes, often unnoticed, making significant contributions to healthcare. Note
What are your thoughts on the "nature versus nurture" debate? Are certain breeds genetically more aggressive? Or is their behavior learned? I've come across some people who think it's a bit of both, though I myself think that a dog's behavior is centered around how it's treated by its' owner or owners. I recently came back across the debate on an online forum and was promptly told that while I'm a student, my opinion on the matter doesn't constitute evidence (I had never said it did), [1/2]
and that the opinions of my professors, all of whom are either Doctors of Veterinary Medicine or Licensed Technologists, amount to nothing. As someone who has a passion for animals all around, I came here because while I know my professors in person, I feel like an opinion on the matter from an outside and unrelated source could help me gain a bit more understanding on the topic. Forgive me if it’s already been discussed, I tried searching your blog for anything on it but found nothing. [2/2]
The ‘Nature vs Nurture’ debate is honestly a bit of a weird debate, and it has significant potential connotations that may be used by people with certain political agendas.
We have domesticated animals partly (or entirely in the case of the Russian Domestic Fox) by selecting for behavior that we wanted, and over multiple generations the behaviors we wanted became more common. We know in the Russian experiment this behavior change was nature rather than nurture, and this observation would fit with much of what we know about the world.
There are real world examples where we have bred in or bred out particular behaviors in domestic species, sometimes intentionally but sometimes by accident. While an individual animal may be perfectly capable of the behavior, this discussion isn’t really about an individual but the trend seen across the group. As some examples:
Reduced interest in mothering in dairy cows and merino ewes
Egg laying breeds of chicken are less likely to go broody
Herding instinct in herding dog breeds
Retrieving in the retriever breeds
The desire to explode into a gallop at any little provocation in a thoroughbred
So we have certainly bred a lot of ‘nature’ into many of our domestic species, and it seems like wishful thinking to me to claim suddenly that we have not, when we have been deliberately doing so for a long time.
So does breeding, genetics, or an evolutionary history predict a behavior? Yes and no.
Baby mammals know how to suckle, fish know how to swim. These are instincts, behaviors which have been so heavily reinforced in our evolutionary history that they now come essentially pre-programed. But that has taken thousands or millions of generations to cement in.
In the Russian Fox Experiment, it took 10 generations of selection before just 18% of the resulting pups were what you’d consider tame and friendly. That’s a decent correlation, but it’s far from a guarantee of behavior.
Now you look at any given domestic dog and consider what its ancestors have been doing for the last ten generations.
Have they all been herding working dogs? Decent chance that pup will have herding potential.
All award winning agility champions? Probably a good bet for agility.
When you look at aggression in this context you would be hard pressed to predict it, as even if you have ten generations of dogs bred for aggression, only a percentage of those pups will be aggressive, and if you have ten generations bred for friendliness only a percentage of them will be friendly. An individual with a very mixed history, as a rescue puppy might have, who knows where it will come out on this spectrum? And behavior is a spectrum, not just a yes/no binary.
In reality and practice it is fairer to say a breed might have a predisposition for aggression, rather than that it is in their nature to be aggressive. And such breeds are usually labeled as ‘not for beginners’ rather than universally condemned (eg Akita, Husky.)
Because a predisposition doesn’t guarantee the behavioral outcome. Training and handling in the case of dogs, introspection and opportunities in the case of humans, probably has at least as much influence on behavior. A puppy showing signs of aggression in the right hands can still become a well adjusted adult, and a sweet puppy in the wrong home can become a bitey, neurotic mess.
There’s all this thinky, learny, squishy stuff behind the eyes for a reason, and that’s because learning to adapt your behavior is a distinct advantage. Nature might be where an animal starts, nut nurture influences which direction it moves in.
Some animals are too far towards aggression, whether they started there by ‘nature’ or ended up being ‘nurtured’ to that point, and were dangerous to everyone. They all ended up in rescues, and then boarding kennels while those rescues tried to find a foster carer that was properly equipped to handle that dog. And at that point, when simply none of your experienced foster carers feel safe taking on a ‘difficult’ dog, I feel like it probably is best to pull the pin on that one, and put the time and effort into a dog that’s not already reached this untouchable state.
So it’s not nature vs nurture. It’s nature and nurture, and I believe the longer than individual has to learn and grow, the more significant the ‘nurture’ side becomes.
Questions can be submitted through the @ask-drferox blog if you read the FAQ, though comments are preferred to be added below.

How Much Is The Salary of a Medical Laboratory Technician?
Tumblr media
They examine body fluid samples in a laboratory setting to detect parasites, bacteria, and other microorganisms that may be causing the patient's disease. Laboratory tests are carried out in toxicology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology in order to diagnose and treat patients. Medical laboratory technicians work in various healthcare facilities that include hospitals, offices of physicians, research laboratories neogen indonesia, health clinics, veterinary laboratories, medical diagnostic laboratories, and biotechnology companies.
The usual day of a medical laboratory technician begins by setting up and adjusting lab equipment. Throughout the day, their tasks include collecting and receiving blood, tissue, urine, and other body fluid samples from patients. They are required to prepare these samples for routine testing through a microscope or automatic analyzer, which will give results detecting any abnormalities or diseases. The results will then be put into a computer for further analysis using graphs, charts, tables, etc. Some samples may need to be stored under controlled conditions for future use. In preparation for the next day, they clean up the lab equipment at the end of the day.
The career of a medical laboratory technician can be rewarding and also challenging at the same time. An individual must be able to work along well with other health care professionals, including scientists and physicians. A Medical laboratory technician must be patient and detail-oriented since there are the important traits of this profession. All information collected must follow the data protection act and patient confidentiality practice.
Education, Training and Certification
An applicant should first possess a high school diploma in order to enter into a medical laboratory technician program. Students are then required to complete at least an Associate's degree, like a 2-year education program provided by a community college, technical school, vocational school, or university. There are also 1-year certificate programs available from hospitals for those already in related fields, such as nursing.
Medical laboratory technicians are restricted in the duties they can perform, like they cannot perform complex lab tests because they do not have the same type of extensive education as a medical laboratory thermogravimetric analyzer tga technologist. Pursuing further education to become a medical laboratory technologist is therefore advisable for laboratory technicians.
Training programs aim at helping trainees acquire the necessary knowledge and skills they need to enter the workforce. Students undergo hands-on practice in real laboratory settings.
Medical laboratory technicians do not require any certification in most states but some states and employers may require a license before an individual can practice. Certified technicians usually have better job offers and higher salaries. Medical laboratory technicians that want to be certified should complete the accredited education program before they write the licensing exam. Continuing education credits are required every year to maintain certification.
