Am I a daughter of Delta Nu? No.
Soon to be a fiancée?? Definitely not.
Has a man chosen me? Nope.
Can my life begin today? Absolutely! (If I put my mind to it)
Make a happy home? I can sure try!
Not waste hard earned wage? Well, my 0 hours contract job don't put me in very often and I'm literally only on for 2&½ hours next week so :/ I don't like spending big amounts of money, that shit is scary. My dad's bank account is safe :)
Strive not to look my age? I already look like a 12 year old with my hair tied up, I think I'm fine.

Legally Blonde Time Travel AU because it’s my niche
First off I’m combining the movie and the musical cause it’s a crime that Professor Stromwell got cut but I love musical!Emmet with my whole heart so yeah. Basically, take the movie but put in musical!Emmet’s relationship with Elle and musical!Vivian’s reaction to Callahan hitting on Elle. Told through everyone else’s POV
- Set after the end of the trial and then Elle is sent back to when she gets kicked out of Callahan’s class. (via magical bracelet that Emmet gifts her from the thrift store as a celebration. Elle wears this bracelet through the whole story and enjoys the challenge of matching all her fits to it, and wow Emmet is such a good friend to know what style she enjoys :)
- Her new goal is still love: Love of helping people through law!
- And to reignite her friendship with Emmet who she loves like a bestie <3
- Instead of Elle being distracted by Warren she’s instead conflicted by knowing that Callahan doesn’t respect her for herself and generally uncomfortable around him. She still wants to do well in his class but dislikes it whenever he gives her compliments
- Vivian initially feels competitive towards Elle since she knows she and Warner used to date but is less antagonistic since Elle isn’t trying to get back with him this time. She does start to fall out with Warner sooner since she can see how Warner looks at Elle especially at the ‘costume’ party
- Speaking of the party!
- Elle is a better student this time (it helps that she already learned this so it’s more of a review) and she gets invited this time for realsies. She asks if it’s a costume party, an inside joke with herself, and Vivian jokingly says yes before clarifying no. Elle comes in her bunny costume anyways cause it’s a great outfit and that party needs more color than navy blue and solo cup red.
- Vivian starts to regret inviting her, feeling embarrassed to be associated with this pink clown, then Elle hands her bunny ear headbands with such an earnest smile on her face that Viv puts them on. I mean, uh, of course because Elle is top of their class and likely to go far in life not because of friendship or because she’s starting to enjoy her company.
- ... Or maybe it is because of friendship. She begins to question why she’s dating Warner when Elle leaves the party, clearly upset by something he said to her.
- Viv catches her on the porch and Elle is shocked but happy that Viv came out to check on her. Elle waves off her concern and says she just needs a walk and she’ll be fine. Walking alone at night is dangerous even on a college campus so Viv makes her promise to call her when Elle gets home safe and they exchange numbers.
- Elle turns down the offer of Viv’s jacket. Yes, because she’s hoping to see her best friend (who she isn’t the best friend to in this time line yet but that doesn’t stop him from being her best friend) and the hoodie he lended her in the original time line maaayyy or may not be the most comfortable thing she owned
- The night is nice, Elle’s glad she can enjoy the walk this time and spends her time on the bench star gazing rather than bawling and crying her eyes out.
- She gets lost in thought of what she wants to do in this timeline, one of the first times she’s been able to completely relax since she got here. Def wants to focus on college this time. Become friends with Viv. Deal with Callahan earli-
- Oh hello Emmet!
- They have their talk again. This time Elle is more cheery and why wouldn’t she be? She’s talking to one of her favorite people and she got back her favorite piece of clothing (not that she ever told him that and no, she never returned it and doesn’t plan to)!
- Emmet asks why she’s going to Harvard, not that she doesn’t deserve to! Just that it seems so far away from where she’s comfortable with if the way she’s huddling for warmth in his hoodie is any indication
- Love???
- She’s going to Harvard University,,,,for love,,, Well he’s only known this whirlwind of a person for a bit but he now can’t imagine her going here for anything else. The smirk she gives him hints that there’s more to her answer but she can keep her secrets if she wants to
- Emmet is honestly confused when she asks to be in a study group with him. She might’ve been tossed out the first day but since then she’s been a model student but he can’t counter the arguments she presents. Plus, there’s just something about her that’s captivating, maybe it’s how comfortable she is with him or how someone as smart as her is as humble as her at the same time. Making her laugh with his dumb “what’s up, doc” greeting, it’s something he wants to do again.
- Their friendship develops as it does in the musical but with Elle being slightly more touchy and both being just falling for each other a bit faster and neither wanting to admit it to themselves.
- Elle’s friends with the movie group, Vivian, David Kidney, Enid, and they all hang out together sometimes with Warren (Viv continues to question what she sees in him) and Emmet (the rest of the group feel like they’re all third wheeling)
- She still gives Callahan a resume when he asks for one. Pink but not scented, she doesn’t want to waste her best paper on him. Emmet finds this somewhat amusing since he’s seen her use the scented paper for grocery lists and short notes to him and thinks she just has a grudge against Callahan for being kicked out the first day
Not sure what else would happen :/ Elle definitely now carries a recording device with her when she knows Callahan is around just so that she can get solid proof of his behavior so that she can report him.

Fuck it. Au where Camp Wawanakwa is a Theatre camp. Chris is the director, Chef is the technical director. Mixing Gen 1 and Gen 2, the cast and crew splits up like this:
(PS, if two people have the same role, it’s just double cast.)
CAST
Alejandro - Joined because he enjoyed theatre as a class. He easily gets roles, though his charm is sometimes seen as an unfair advantage to others so he doesn’t audition much.
NOTABLE ROLES
the Phantom
the SQUIP
Emmett Forrest
Rocky
Kenickie Murdoch
Sierra - Joined because OBVIOUSLY she wants a place to nerd out! She gets good roles because she’s one of the only people who put all her emotions and being into her lines AND songs.
NOTABLE ROLES
Sandy Cheeks
Jenna Rolland
Columbia
Ronette
Delia Deetz
Duncan - I can’t decide whether he joined as a joke, or if his parents forced him to hang out with other teens. Maybe both. But surprisingly, he’s a good actor—AND can, surprisingly, do an incredible Mr. Krabs impression. He also constantly fights with crew to not wear a wig, keeping his mohawk onstage.
NOTABLE ROLES
Mr. Krabs
Jake Dillinger
Eddie
Orin Scrivello
Beetlejuice???
Tyler - Joined because he thought it would be like High School Musical. His roles are never big, but he has fun with them and always treats them like they’re the lead.
NOTABLE ROLES
Patchy the Pirate
one of the businessmen that purchases an Audrey II
Harold - He WOULD be a threatre kid if he could. He auditions with rapping EVERY TIME. And it works for him.
NOTABLE ROLES
Sheldon J. Plankton
Kevin G
Riff Raff
Geoff - Joined as a dare, and ended up loving it. He’s super chill about cast lists, and whatever he ends up with, he makes sure it’s including Bridgette.
NOTABLE ROLES
Patrick Star/Larry the Lobster/Gary the Snail
Damien Hubbard
Heather - She likes being in the spotlight. She expects roles, and she gets roles. .. not always. She’s typecast as the mean girl.
NOTABLE ROLES
Chloe Valentine
Regina George
Magenta
Vivian Kensington
Betty Rizzo
Lindsay - Loves movies and musicals and wants to be like that!! But she usually forgets her lines… and when she does, they’re all from Mean Girls. Even if she’s doing Rocky Horror, she’ll say her Karen Smith lines. Oh well.
NOTABLE ROLES
Karen Smith
Paulette Bonafonté
Frenchy Facciano
Leshawna - She has a big voice, so she’ll join to get big roles. Although, she’s never really cast in dance heavy roles…
NOTABLE ROLES
Pearl Krabs
Janice Ian
Audrey II/Chiffon
Elle Woods
Owen - He thought theatre camp could be fun! He has a surprisingly nice voice, and is just really good at embodying characters.
NOTABLE ROLES
SpongeBob SquarePants/Patrick Star
Michael Mell
Noah - “Joined as a joke”. He secretly really wanted to. He has the gay theatre kid energy here… his voice is also quite pleasant.
NOTABLE ROLES
Squidward Tentacles
Adam Maitland
Brad Majors
Warner Huntington III
Trent - Joined for fun since he had a free summer. He always brings his guitar, and sometimes plays it for script read throughs.
NOTABLE ROLES
an Electric Skate
Aaron Samuels
Cody - Family got him to join. They hoped he could get really cute roles, and he acts like he doesn’t care. He does.
NOTABLE ROLES
SpongeBob SquarePants/Old Man Jenkins
Seymour Krelborn
Bridgette - A friend suggested she signed up, so she did—tries to get a couples role with Geoff ever since they got together.
NOTABLE ROLES
Mayor of Bikini Bottom
Brooke Lohst
Janice Ian
Brooke Wyndham
Courtney - She’s done every subject and activity, of COURSE she’ll try theatre! She’s destined to be a star! She takes everything extremely seriously. And if she doesn’t get the role she wants… it’s scary.
NOTABLE ROLES
Christine Daae
Jenna Rolland
Gretchen Weiners
Vivian Kensington
Barbara Maitland
Crystal
Katie and Sadie - They picked a summer camp they wanted to do together, chose this, and auditioned for EVERYTHING together. They don’t really do roles that aren’t a duo.
NOTABLE ROLES
the Delta Nu girls
Justin - Decided to join because he assumed he’d get roles IMMEDIATELY for how he looked. He did not.
NOTABLE ROLES
an Electric Skate
Kyle the delivery man
Cameron - His mom suggested he joined a theatre camp because it felt “safe”—plus, he can actually sing and dance pretty well, since he grew up with his mom’s disco music.
NOTABLE ROLES
Seymour Krelborn
Anne Maria - She REALLY wants a shot at being a lead in a musical, but is painfully… tone deaf. But she’s pretty good at dancing, actually!
NOTABLE ROLES
Cha-Cha DiGregorio
Mike - His psychiatrist suggested he take a theatre camp, since his excuse for his switches is that he just “likes to act”. In reality, Mike… doesn’t really like acting. He’ll take one role, but all his others are usually done by… not. Him.
NOTABLE ROLES
Jeremy Heere
Beetlejuice (Mal)
Danny Zuko (Vito)
Zoey - She actually loves musicals! Big theatre kid! She can make her own costumes and knows way too much about the shows she’s in, but barely says anything about it because she’s nervous about appearing as weird.
NOTABLE ROLES
Karen
Christine Canigula
Cady Heron
Chutney Wyndham
Janet Weiss
Lydia Deetz
Sandy Olsson
Lightning - Joined by accident. He doesn’t know where he is. He likes the attention, though.
NOTABLE ROLES
an Electric Skate
Brick - He was too nervous to join theatre at school, so he tried a summer camp no one had ever heard of… and it was perfect!
NOTABLE ROLES
Perch Perkins
Dr. Scott
Scott - Joined as a joke. Auditions as a joke. Usually tries to get someone to mess up a line or say the M word onstage…
NOTABLE ROLES
Rich Goranski
Dakota - OOOFF COOUURRSEEE she has to be center stage! Of COURSE! It’s not Broadway, but this’ll do!
NOTABLE ROLES
Brooke Wyndham
Miss Argentina
Dawn - (is usually crew)
NOTABLE ROLES
Audrey
CREW
DJ - paints sets!
Eva - helps with exercises and choreography!
Gwen - head of makeup!
Izzy - she does the practical effects/special effects/visuals!
Courtney - she has FOUGHT with Chris and Chef to be allowed to act and do crew at the same time. she does lights. do NOT let her be stage manager.
Ezekiel - also pants sets!
Beth - assists in costuming!
Cameron - prop master!
Mike - when he can avoid acting, he helps Cam!
Dawn - she’s an assistant stage manager, and always knows who’s playing what before the cast list gets written somehow…
B - to save money on hiring various companies for flying or using other big machinery, he handles that himself.
Sam - sound master!
Brick - when he’s not acting, he works on being head of costumes!
Jo - stage manager!
PPS. I know most of these are adult shows, but do you think Chris gives a shit

Keep deleting condescending replies to my one vivian post that are like "nintendo's not gonna fix it cuz they don't like queer themes+characters🙄".
I assure you I'm well aware. Why do you think I gave Vivian an intimidating gun fireball?
Even acknowledging Super Mario RPG or TTYD has been an assumed impossibility until this year, they've suddenly become way less predictable to me than this time last year. IPs that were previously heavily protected like Mario and Pikmin are now taking weirder risks than they have in years.
The weird half-compassionate way that Intelligent Systems painted Vivian in TTYD is something that they still like to do wrt crossdressing/gnc characters. The character "Forrest" in fire emblem fates (2016) is a similar character of theirs that didn't get censored through translation - even if the end result is kind of baffling when you try to understand it as "representation". There are good reasons to feel otherwise, but I personally think the net value of acknowledging that Vivian is not perceived how she would like to be is worth the baggage of the original writing. Even they fumble the language around it big time. It doesn't matter to me if her experience isn't adjusted to be exactly analogous with western ideas about gender identity as long as it like - exists as a topic for her. Even at its worst it wouldn't be the first thing that TTYD writes poorly.
Also, the whole "she's not really transgender it's just a japanese trope thing" is a sneaky little rhetorical move but I think it's largely pedantic. Positioning gender non-conformity in the west as a monolith of experience (which it very much is not) that seeks to colonize eastern ideas about sex and gender is deliberately reductive and reactionary. There are certainly nuanced differences between how our cultures view sex and gender, but it's disingenuous to presume that all western fans are asking for Vivian to walk onscreen handing out a carrd link and listing her pronouns. Btw I'm not even saying I think it's likely that Nintendo will do this right, but I'm annoyed with every tag and reply in my notifs being doomers assuming I don't know better TT' A ''TT

Forrest Gump (1994); AFI #76
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next film that was reviewed for the AFI top 100 was perhaps the most Americana movie of them all, Forrest Gump (1994). This is the story of a relatively simple man who truly experiences life by doing what people tell him he should do. The film won at the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing. Tom Hanks won his second consecutive Best Actor role after winning for Philadelphia the previous year, and this really put his stamp down as an A-List talent with huge box office draw. Robert Zemeckis was finally recognized by the Academy for the consistently good work he had done in the 80s and 90s for films like Romancing the Stone (1984), Back to the Future (1985), and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). The story of Forrest Gump is quite the journey (quite literally), so I want to go through it before pointing out some behind the scenes aspects of the film. This, of course, means that wonderful part of all of my reviews:
SPOILER WARNING!!! THIS IS A GREAT STORY AND THERE ARE DEFINITELY SOME ASPECTS TO SPOIL, SO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE MOVIE BEFORE READING ANY FURTHER! IT IS WORTH SEEING WITHOUT KNOWING THE ENDING!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1981, at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia, a man named Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) recounts his life story to strangers who sit next to him on a bench. He makes the very famous statement that really frames the entire film: "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna' get."
In 1956, in Greenbow, Alabama, young Forrest is fitted with leg braces to correct a curved spine since he is unable to walk properly. Forrest is named after the founder of the Klu Klux Klan as a reminder what foolish things people do. His father ran away (his mom calls it being on vacation), so he lives alone with his mother (Sally Fields), who runs a boarding house. Forrest has an IQ of 80, which should keep him from the public school, but his mother works out a deal with the principal. Mrs. Gump is very shrewd and is able to attract a lot of interesting characters to their home including a young Elvis Presley, who plays the guitar for Forrest and incorporates Forrest's jerky dance movements into his performances. Being able to attend school, Forrest takes the bus and meets a girl named Jenny Curran, and the two become best friends.
Forrest is often bullied because of his physical disability and low intelligence. One of those things suddenly changes because, while fleeing from several bullies (Run, Forrest, run!), his leg braces break off, revealing Forrest to be very fast. Forrest and Jenny (Robin Wright Penn) remain best friends through to college age, and the bullies continue to chase him. During one particular escape, Forrest is discovered by University of Alabama coach Bear Bryant. This talent for running gets Forrest a football scholarship and a college education. At his time at the college, he is coached by Bear Bryant, witnesses Governor George Wallace's Stand in the Schoolhouse Door (during which he returns a dropped book to Vivian Malone Jones), becomes a top kick returner, is named to the All-American team, and meets President John F. Kennedy at the White House.
After graduating college in 1967, Forrest enlists into the U.S. Army. During basic training, he befriends a fellow soldier named Benjamin Buford Blue (nicknamed "Bubba" and played by Mykelti Williamson), who convinces Forrest to go into the shrimping business with him after their service. Later that year, they are sent to Vietnam, serving with the 9th Infantry Division in the Mekong Delta region under Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise). After months of routine operations, their platoon is ambushed while on patrol, and Bubba is killed in action. Forrest saves several wounded platoonmates – including Lieutenant Dan, who loses both his legs – and is awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
At the famous anti-war March on the Pentagon rally, Forrest briefly reunites with Jenny, who has become a drug addicted hippie and anti-war activist. He is kicked out of a Black Panther meeting when he defends Jenny from an abusive boyfriend. He also develops a talent for ping-pong and becomes a sports celebrity as he competes against Chinese teams in ping-pong diplomacy, earning him an interview alongside John Lennon on The Dick Cavett Show, influencing the song "Imagine". He spends the 1972 New Year's Eve in New York City with Lieutenant Dan, who has become an alcoholic, embittered about his disability and the government's apathy towards Vietnam vets. Forrest's ping-pong success eventually leads to a meeting with President Richard Nixon, whose administration get him a room in the Watergate complex, where he unwittingly exposes the Watergate scandal.
Discharged from the army, Forrest returns to Greenbow and endorses a company that makes ping-pong paddles. He uses the earnings to buy a shrimping boat in Bayou La Batre, fulfilling his promise to Bubba. Lieutenant Dan joins Forrest in 1974, and they initially have little success. After their boat becomes the only one to survive Hurricane Carmen, they pull in huge amounts of shrimp and create the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, after which Lieutenant Dan finally thanks Forrest for saving his life. Lieutenant Dan invests into what Forrest thinks is "some kind of fruit company" (MacIntosh) and the two become millionaires. Forrest also gives half of his earnings to Bubba's family for inspiring the venture. Forrest then returns home to his mother and takes care of her as she dies of cancer.
In 1976, Jenny – in the midst of recovering from years of drugs and abuse – returns to visit Forrest. He starts to realize how angry she is with her life and father, so he of course decides to propose to her. She says no because she will only hurt him, but that night she tells Forrest she loves him and the two make love, but she leaves the next morning. Heartbroken, Forrest goes running "for no particular reason", and spends the next three years on a relentless cross-country marathon, becoming famous again before returning to Greenbow. This so beautiful because Forrest is so lost without Jenny or his momma, so he falls back on the only thing that he really knows how to do.
In 1981, Forrest reveals that he is waiting at the bus stop because he received a letter from Jenny, who asked him to visit her. Forrest is finally reunited with Jenny, who introduces him to their son, Forrest Gump Junior. Jenny tells Forrest she is sick with an "unknown virus" and the three move back to Greenbow. Jenny and Forrest finally marry, but she dies a year later. The film ends with Forrest seeing his son off on his first day of school.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This film has a lot of greats, but also a couple of bads. The story is very engaging and turns into the most nostalgic American history lesson of all time. Tom Hanks plays a constant fish-out-of-water character, because Forrest has intelligence levels, which lead to a constant need for explanation. It is a fantastically filmable concept and Zemeckis takes full advantage of it.
Speaking of filming, the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. The different shots that replay those historical moments (the integration at the University of Alabama, the Mekong Delta during the war, the protest at Washington DC), the beauty of the American roads, the Bayou when they are shrimping, and the giant Gump property are all beautiful. They also did a pretty good job of editing Forrest into stock footage as far as the body goes. It was groundbreaking at the time, but it can be done in After Effect by Youtubers at this point. What was not impressive and obviously does not hold up is the face tracking. Specifically bad are the presidents and John Lennon when they altered the mouths on historical footage to try and make them say different things. It is terrible. It does not break the movie, but it is both noticeable and laughable, especially since the film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
The score written for the film is simple and elegant, really adding to the mood and the tone. The songs can be somber and a little sad, but there is this child-like simplicity that is constantly hopeful and moving forward. Very much like Forrest Gump. The rest of the soundtrack follows the popular rock anthems of the time and the whole thing is a pleasure to listen to. I used to just let it play when I was trying (with moderate success) to do my calculus homework in high school.
The statements that Forrest Gump makes throughout the film carry more and more weight as we realize that he is saying these things from his own experience and not just because somebody told him. The phrase "I am not a smart man, but I know what love is" is so powerful coming from Forrest. He says this after Jenny turns him down for marriage, and it becomes apparent that his loss of Bubba and his mother taught him what caring for somebody really means. He might not be able to give a psychological definition of love, but he has experienced it. Beautifully written and emotionally delivered.
One other thing that might be good or bad, depending on how you see it, is that the movie is blatantly sentimental. It tugs at the heart strings, but it is really trying to do it. Bubba dies, Lieutenant Dan loses his legs, Jenny is constantly in trouble, Mrs. Gump dies...all of these things have the same downward shots with somber music. These scenes are all followed up with forward movie scenes and uplifting music. The film constantly pulls the audience all over the place, which makes the tone go all over the place. Knowing that this was Robert Zemeckis directing, it makes me think that this was purposeful. Forrest Gump had a very difficult time knowing what was going on, so he depended on the context and what people said to tell him how he should feel. The audience truly experienced what it was like to be Forrest, and we all went on a life journey with him
One thing that I saw when browsing through interviews was that the unknown virus that Jenny died of was not AIDS. It was supposed to be Hepatitis, according to the director, the author of the source material, and the screen writer. AIDS was just the major disease on the global mind at the time, but it wasn't that common in the early 80s. It was hard to tell because most deaths close to Forrest were not shown at the point of passing. Forrest doesn't want to talk about those moments, and he is the real narrator.
Does this movie belong on the AFI top 100? Of course. This is the most Americana film I know of, and it showcases a simple view of two decades of the American experience. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah! This movie is a whole lot of fun and a really easy watch. There are some technical flaws, but the story and acting are superior to just about anything else I have seen.

『Forrest Gump』PART2~Are you trying to take revenge on someone for your precious efforts?
09. The beginning of the 'Happy combo'
Then it changes to high school.
Just like when he was in elementary school, Forrest is pelted with rocks by his classmates and runs away.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Classmate A: "Hey, stupid!"
Jenny:
"Quit it!"
"Run! Forrest, run!"
Classmate A: "Didn't you hear me, stupid?"
Jenny: "Run, Forrest!"
ーーーーーーーーーー
This time, the vehicle has been upgraded, and Forrest is chased by his classmates in a car.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Classmate A:
"Get in the truck!"
"Come on! He's getting away! Move it!"
Jenny:
"Run,Forrest! Run!"
"Run, Forrest!"
ーーーーーーーーーー
The entertainment begins again.
Even the fast-footed Forrest can't beat a car.
Forest ran wide at a steep angle.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"Now, it used to be I ran to get where I was going."
"I never thought it would take me anywhere."
ーーーーーーーーーー
He then rushes to the university's American football practice field and plays fast.
ーーーーーーーーーー
American football head coach: "Who is in the hell is that?"
Junior coach: "That is Forrest Gump, coach. Just a local idiot."
Forrest's narration: "And can you believe it? I got to go to college, too."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest joined the American football team, and while he was on the team, he was active only with his quick feet.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Teammate: "Forrest, move it! Run!"
Head coach:
"Run, you stupid son of a bitch!"
"Run, son of a bitch, run! Go! Run!"
ーーーーーーーーーー
It's a fun scene where the opposing team can't keep up with Forest's speed, and the opponents collide with each other and fall into pieces along the way.
The cheering banner at the exit of the stadium had the words "GO ALABAMA GO" written on it,
Forrest crossed the finish line and ran all the way to the outside of the stadium.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Head coach: "He must be the stupidest son of a bitch alive, but he sure is fast."
ーーーーーーーーーー

You never know what will happen in life.
Life is really like a box of chocolates, and you won't know until you try them.
I think time, place, luck, and the ability to adapt to those conditions are important.
However, the purpose of this work is not to suggest that a certain skill will lead to good fortune.
After all, it is a person's 'heart'.
10. University of Alabama Black Admissions
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration: "Now, maybe it's just me, but college was very confusing times."
TV Narrator:
"Federal troops, enforcing a court order, integrated the University of Alabama today. Two Negroes were admitted, but only after Governor George Wallace had carried out his symbolic threat to stand in the schoolhouse door. Shortly after Governor Wallace had stood and blocked the doorway, President Kennedy then ordered the use military force. Here, by videotape, is the encounter by General Graham, commander of the national guard, and Governor Wallace."
ーーーーーーーーーー
A crowd of people had formed inside the university campus.
Forrest asks his classmate Earl.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest: "Earl, what's going on?"
Earl: "Coons are trying to get into school."
Forrest: "Coons? When racoons tried getting on our back porch, Mama just chased them off with a broom."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest didn't understand the metaphor.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Earl: "Not racoons, you idiot. Niggers. They want to go to school with us."
Forrest: "With us? They do?"
Wallace/Governor of Alabama:
"Because these national guardsmen are here today as federal soldiers for Alabama, and they live within our borders. They are our brothers. We are winning in this fight, because we are awakening the American people to the dangers that we have spoken about so many times, so evident today, a trend toward military dictatorship in this country.  "
TV Narrator:
"And so, at day's end, the University of Alabama had been desegregated, and students Jimmy Hood and Vivian Malone had been signed up for summer classes. Governor Wallace did what he promised. By being on the Tuscaloosa campus, he kept the mob from gathering..."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest is reflected in the actual speech video and looks around.
What an ironic scene!
Tumblr media
During this speech, Forrest watches Governor Wallace raise his hand in greeting, and later begins to imitate him.
Two black students proudly enter the school.
One of them drops a book, but Forrest is the only one to pick it up for her.
Forrest is captured in the actual entrance video using special photography.
It clearly shows what kind of discrimination there was against black people at the time.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"A few years later, that angry little man at the schoolhouse door thought it'd be a good idea and ran for President."
"But somebody thought that it wasn't."
"But he didn't die."
ーーーーーーーーーー
The black nurse waiting for the bus seemed to feel an affinity for Forrest, so she called out to him as he was leaving.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Black nurse: "My bus is here."
Forrest: "Is it theNumber 9?"
Black nurse: "No, it's the number 4."
Forrest: "It was nice talking to you."
ーーーーーーーーーー
11. Dream of girls' dormitory
A white woman next to him with a baby approaches him and speaks to Forrest.
ーーーーーーーーーー
White woman:
"I remember when that happened, when Wallace got shot."
"I was in college."
Forrest: "Did you go to a girls' college?"
White woman: "It was coed."
Forrest:
"Jenny went to a college I couldn't go to."
"It was a college just for girls."
"But I'd go and visit her every chance I got."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny was dropped off by her boyfriend and they were making out in the car.
When Forrest sees this, he thinks Jenny is being attacked and attacks her boyfriend.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny:
"Forrest! Stop it!"
"Forrest! Stop! What are you doing!"
Forrest: "He was hurting you."
Jenny: "No, he wasn't! Get over there!"
Boyfriend: "Just keep away from me."
Jenny:
"Billy, I'm sorry."
"Don't be such a...Don't go."
"Billy, wait a second."
"He doesn't know any better."
"Forrest, Why'd you do that?"
Forrest:
"I brought you some chocolate."
"I'm sorry."
"I'll go back to my college now."
Jenny:
"Forrest, look at you."
"Come on. Come on."
ーーーーーーーーーー
People like Jenny, who are always looking for love and have a 'love hunger feeling', feel unbearably anxious if they don't depend on others.
And it is also true that there are many people who take advantage of it.
This boyfriend is like that, and I think Jenny is even vaguely aware of that.
Jenny easily forgave Forrest and led him to a room in the girls' dormitory.
Very important words are spoken in the following conversation.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny: "Do you ever dream, Forrest,  about who you're going to be
?"
Forrest:
"Who I'm going to be?"
"Aren't I going to be me?"
Jenny:
"You'll always be you, just another kind of you."
"You know? I want to be famous."
"I want to be a singer like Joan Baez"
"I just want to be on an empty stage with my guitar, my voice."
"Just me."
"And I want to reach people on a personal level."
"I want to be able to say things, just one to one."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's words are more paradoxical.
It feels like a shortcut to happiness and self-actualization.
Being who you are will bring you happiness.
Jenny is in denial about who she is now.
She wants to make an effort to change who she is and be reborn.
And she wants to receive all the love from people.
People with an inferiority complex struggle desperately to be reborn and make fruitless efforts.
The reason why it doesn't bear fruit is because even if you achieve something, your 'thirst' will never be quenched.
That is why the 'feeling of love hunger' is bottomless, and the 'feelings of worthlessness' and 'self-denial' will never subside.
Each person has their own abilities.
If you aim for abilities that don't match your aptitude, you'll never get there.
What comes after that is 'jealousy and resentment' toward others, 'self-pity',  and 'a feeling of emptiness'.
It's impossible to decide. You can't be Superman.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny:
"Have you ever been with a girl, Forrest?"
"I sit next to them in my home economics class all the time."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny removed her underwear and let Forrest touch her.
Forrest forgets to breathe and is in pain.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest: "I'm sorry."
Jenny: "It's OK."
Forrest: "Sorry."
Jenny:
"It's all right."
"It's OK."
Forrest: "I'm dizzy."
Jenny: "I'll bet that never happened in home ec."
Forrest: "No."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny put on her underwear and felt the warmth of Forrest's body, just like when she was a child.
This is the scene where you can see that the injured Jenny is being healed.
Tumblr media
12. President Kennedy
A great success in American football as usual.
It's interesting that the cheering team's characters changed from 'GO ALABAMA' to 'GO FORREST' last time.
In addition, there is a 'STOP FORREST' banner.
The opposing players were stunned by Forrest's speed.
Tumblr media
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"College ran by real fast 'cause I played so much football."
"They even put me on a thing called the All-America team where you get to meet the President of the United States.''
ーーーーーーーーーー
The line 'I'm going to be included in the national team' comes from Forest, so it's not sarcastic.
ーーーーーーーーーー
TV Narrator: "President Kennedy met with the collegiate All-American football team at the Oval Office today."
Forrest's narration:
"The really good thing about meeting the President of the United States is the food."
"They put you in a room with just about anything you'd want to eat or drink."
"But since, number one, I wasn't hungry, but thirsty, and number two, they was free, I must have drank about 15 Dr Peppers."
ーーーーーーーーーー
The real President Kennedy is shown in footage of Forrest drinking too much and needing to go to the bathroom, squirming.
Tumblr media
ーーーーーーーーーー
President Kennedy: "Congratulations. How does it feel to be an All-American?"
Forrest: "I got to pee."
President Kennedy: "I believe he said he had to pee."
ーーーーーーーーーー
There was a photo of Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedy brothers in the White House bathroom.
These are tragic figures closely connected to President Kennedy.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"Some time later, for no particular reason, somebody shot that nice young President when he was in his car."
"And a few years after that, somebody shot his little brother, too, only he was in a hotel kitchen."
"Must be hard being brothers. I wouldn't know."
"Now can you believe it?.''
"After only five years of playing football, I got a college degree."
"Mama was so proud."
Forrest's mother: "Forrest, I'm so proud of you. I'll hold this for you."
ーーーーーーーーーー
13.Enlistment
Forrest will apply for the Army information he received at his graduation ceremony.
This is also interesting, but director Robert Zemeckis joins the army in the same situation as the elementary school bus.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest: "Hello. I'm Forrest. Forrest Gump."
Army bus driver:
"Nobody gives a horse's shit who you are, pus ball!"
"You're not even a lowlife, scum-sucking maggot!"
"Get your faggoty ass on the bus! You're in the army now! "
ーーーーーーーーーー
The sergeant's bad language has been around for a long time, like in 'The Departure of Love and Youth'.
Forrest looks for a seat on a nearly full bus, much like a school bus.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Man A: "Seat's taken."
Man B: "Taken."
Forrest's narration:
"At first it seemed like I made a mistake."
"It was only my induction day, and I was getting yelled at."
Bubba: "Sit down if you want to."
Forrest: "I didn't know who I might meet or what they might ask."
Bubba: "You ever been on a real shrimp-boat?"
Forrest: "No.But I been on a real big boat."
Bubba:
"I'm talking about a shrimp-catching boat."
"I been working on shrimp-boats all my life."
"I started out on my uncle's boat when I was about maybe nine."
"I was just looking into buying my own boat and got drafted."
"My given name is Benjamin Buford Blue."
"People call me Budda, just like one of them old redneck boys."
"Can you believe that?"
Forrest: "My name's Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump."
Forrest's narration:
"So Bubba was from Bayou La Batre, Alabama, and his mama cooked shrimp."
"And her mama before her cooked shrimp, and her mama before her mama cooked shrimp, too."
"Bubba's family knew everything there was to know about the shrimping business."
ーーーーーーーーーー
By showing generations of black people serving white people, we can understand the history of black slavery.
It's a black joke.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Bubba:
"I know everything there is to know about the shrimping business."
"I'm going into the shrimping business myself after I get out of the army.''
ーーーーーーーーーー
Tumblr media
It's a familiar scene in the military, where a scary sergeant gets close to his face and curses at a group of regular soldiers lined up.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Sergeant:
"Gump!"
"What's your sole purpose in this army?"
Forrest: "To do whatever you tell me, drill sergeant!"
Sergeant:
"Godddamn it, Gump, you're a goddamn genius."
"That's the most outstanding answer I've ever heard."
"You must have a goddamn I.Q.of 160."
"You are goddamn gifted, Private Gump."
Forrest's narration:
"For some reason, I fit in the army like one of them round pegs.''
"It's not really hard."
"You just make your bed neat, remember to stand up straight, and always answer every question with, 'Yes, drill sergeant.' "
ーーーーーーーーーー
This is rifle assembly training.
Bubba always talks about shrimp.
ーーーーーーーーー
Bubba:
"What you do is drag your nets along the bottom."
"On a good day, you can catch over a hundred pounds of shrimp."
"Everything goes all right, two men shrimping ten hours, less what you spends on gas..."
Forrest: "Done, drill sergeant!"
Sergeant: "Gump! Why did you put that weapon together so quickly?"
Forrest: "You told me to, drill sergeant."
Sergeant:
"Jesus H. Christ."
"This is a new company record.."
"If it wasn't a waste of a fine enlisted man,I'd recommend you for O.C.S., Private Gump."
"You're going to be a general someday!"
"Now disassemble your weapon and continue!"
Bubba:
"Anyway, like I was saying, shrimp is the fruit of the sea."
"You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it."
"There's shrimp kebabs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried, There's pineapple shrimp and lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp in potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich."
"That's about it."
Forrest's narration:
"Night-time in the army is a lonely time."
"We'd lay there in our bunks, and I'd miss my mama, and I'd miss Jenny."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Then the man next to him hands him a pornographic magazine.
When Forrest looked, Jenny was listed.
14.Blown by the wind
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"Turns out Jenny had gotten into some trouble over some photos of her in her college sweater."
"And she was thrown out of school."
"But that wasn't a bad thing, 'cause a man who owns a theater in Memphis, Tennessee, saw those photos and offered Jenny a job singing in a show."
"The first chance I got, I took the bus up to Memphis to see he perform in that show.''
Host:
"That was Amber, Amber Flame. Give her a big hand."
"And now, for your listening and viewing pleasure, direct from Hollywood, California, our very own beatnik beauty."
"Let's give a big round of applause to the luscious Bobbie Dylon."
ーーーーーーーーーー
She became a singing stripper, covering her upper body with an acoustic guitar.
She was playing the song "Blowin' in the Wind" ~Bob Dylan/Joan Baez~.
ーーーーーーーーーー
~ "Blowin’ In The Wind" Bob Dylan ~
♫ How many roads must a man walk down
♫ Before you call him a man?
♫ How many seas must a white dove sail
♫ Before she sleeps in the sand?
♫ And how many times must the cannon balls fly
♫ Before they’re forever banned?
♫ The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
♫ The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest narration:
"Her dream had come true."
"She was a folk singer."
ーーーーーーーーーー
There is something very sad about this irony.
'How many roads must a man walk down. Before you call him a man?' expresses Jenny's current feelings and is heartbreaking.
The way the lyrics are synchronized with Jenny's current situation resonates with the viewers.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Audience:
"Come on baby, shake it up now!."
"Somebody get her a harmonica."
"This ain't Captain Kangaroo!"
"I got something here for you."
"Goddamn it!"
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny gets into a fight with a customer who touches her leg.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny:
"Hey, you stupid jerk!"
"I'm singing a song here."
"Paulie, get out here! Just shut up!"
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest takes the stage and pulls the audience away from Jenny.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny:
"Forrest! What are you doing here?"
"What are you doing?"
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest picks up a naked Jenny and tries to take her away.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny: "What are you doing, Forrest? Let me down!"
ーーーーーーーーーー
The two left the stage.
Tumblr media
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny:
"You can't keep doing this, Forrest."
"You can't keep trying to rescue me."
Forrest: "They was trying to grab you."
Jenny:
"A lot of people try to grab me."
"You can't keep doing this all the time."
Forrest: "I can't help it. I love you."
Jenny:
"Forrest, You don't know what love is."
"You remember that time we prayed, Forrest?"
"We prayed for God to turn me into a bird so I could fly far away?.''
Forrest: "Yes, I do."
Jenny: "You think I could fly off this bridge?"
Forrest: "What do you mean, Jenny?"
Jenny: "Nothing."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny was driven to the point of suicide.
A helpless feeling grips Jenny and won't let her go.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny: "I gotta get out of here."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny picked up the car and tried to get into it.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest: "Wait, Jenny."
Jenny:
"Forrest, you stay away from me, OK?"
"Just stay away from me, please."
"Can I have a ride?"
Car man: "Where are you going?"
Jenny: "I don't care."
Car man: "Get in the truck."
Forrest:
"So bye-bye, Jenny."
"They're sending me to Vietnam."
"It's this whole other country."
ーーーーーーーーーー
When Jenny heard this, she stopped getting into the car.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny:
"Just hang on a minute."
"Listen, you promise me something, OK?"
"Just if you're ever in trouble, don't be brave."
"You just run, OK? Just run away."
Forrest:
"OK."
"Jenny! "
"I'll write you all the time."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Jenny got into the car and drove away without saying a word.
Despite Forrest's frequent interference, the kind-hearted Jenny has forgiven him.
However, it's heartbreaking to see her gradually losing her composure.
Forrest, on the other hand, continues to watch over Jenny patiently.
We can't help but feel the 'unconditional love' from Forrest.
For Jenny, Forrest should be her spiritual nest.
Because of her inferiority complex and because she continues to chase after her own ideal image, Jenny is still unable to accept it honestly.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration: "And just like that, she was gone."
ーーーーーーーーーー
15. To the battlefield
Forrest returns to his mother before going off to war.
Mother said nothing and gently hugged Forrest.
A beautiful yet warm sunset enveloped Forrest.
That sunset was like motherhood itself.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's mother: "You come back safe to me. Do you hear?"
ーーーーーーーーーー
Tumblr media
The Vietnam era began with the sound of military helicopters and the song 'Fortunate Son' ~Creedence Clearwater Revival~.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"They told us that Vietnam was going to be very different from the United States of America."
"Except for all the beer cans and barbecues, it was."
Bubba: "I'll bet there's shrimp all in these waters."
"They tell me these Vietnams is good shrimp."
"After we win this war and we take over everything, we can get American shrimpers out here and shrimp these waters."
"Just shrimp all the time, man."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest and Bubba, who have been assigned to Vietnam, go to greet their Lieutenant.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Lieutenant Dan: "You must be my FNGs?"
ーーーーーーーーーー
When the two realize it's an officer, they hurriedly salute.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Lieutenant Dan:
"Get your hands down"
"Do not salute me."
"There are goddamn snipers all around this area Who'd love to grease an officer."
"I'm Lieutenant Dan Taylor. Welcome to Fort Platoon."
"What's wrong with your lip?"
ーーーーーーーーーー
Lieutenant Dan said, looking at Bubba's face where his bottom lip was sticking out.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Bubba: "I was born with big gums, sir."
Lieutenant Dan:
"Well, you better tuck that in."
"Gonna get that caught on a trip wire."
"Where are you boys from in the world?"
Forrest & Bubba: "Alabama, sir! "
Lieutenant Dan: "You twins?"
Forrest: "No. We are not relations, sir."
Lieutenant Dan:
"Look, it's pretty basic here."
"Stick with me and learn from the guys who've been in country, you'll be all right."
"There is one item of G.I.gear that can be the difference between life and death."
"Socks."
"Cushioned sole, O.D.Greeen."
"Trt and keep your feet dry."
"When we're out humpin', change your socks whenever we stop."
"The Mekong will eat a grunt's feet right off his legs."
"Sergeant Sims. Goddamn it, where's that sling rope I ordered?"
Sergeant: "I put in the requisitions."
Lieutenant Dan:
"Well, call those sons of bitches..."
"Goddamn it, kick some ass. Get on it! "
Forrest Narration:
"Lieutenant Dan knew his stuff."
"I felt real lucky he was my Lieutenant."
"He was from a long, great military tradition."
"I guess you could say he had a lot to live up to."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's way of thinking is always positive.
If you have anxiety or worry, your mind will become obsessed with it and become filled with fear.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration: "Somebody in his family had fought and died in every single American war."
ーーーーーーーーーー
Similar to Bubba's family mentioned above, the scenes of Lieutenant Dan's family dying in battle in America's past wars are shown with a comedic touch.
In the middle of the song, the song 'Sloop John B' ~The Beach Boys~ is played.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Lieutenant Dan:
"So, you boys from Arkansas?"
"Well, I been through there."
"Little Rock's a fine town."
ーーーーーーーーーー
He's a superior who doesn't listen to his subordinates much. Still, it's interesting that Forest says he can be relied upon.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Lieutenant Dan:
"Now, shake down your gear. See the platoon sergeant."
"Draw what you need for the field."
"If you boys are hungry, we got steaks burning right over here."
"Two standing orders in this platoon."
"One, take good care of your feet."
"Two, try not to do anything stupid, like getting yourself killed."
Forrest: "I hope I don't let him down."
Forrest's narration:
"I got to see a lot of countryside."
"We would take these real long walks."
"And we were always lookin' for this guy named Charlie."
"It wasn't always fun."
"Lieutenant Dan was always getting these funny feelings about a rock or a trail or the road, so he'd tell us to 'get down, shut up'."
"So we did."
"I don't know much about anything, but I think some of America's best young men served in this war."
"There was Dallas from Phoenix."
"Cleveland, he was from Detroit."
"And Tex was... Well, I don't remember where Tex come from."
"The good thing about Vietnam is there was always someplace to go."
"And there was always something to do."
"One day it started raining, and it didn't quit for four months.''
"We've been through every kind of rain there is."
"Little bitty stinging rain and big old fat rain, rain that flew in sideways, and sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath."
"Shoht, it even rained at night.''
Bubba:
"I'm going to lean up against you."
"You lean up against me."
"This way we don't have to sleep with our heads in the mud."
"You know why we're a good partnership, Forrest?"
" 'Cause we be watching out for one another, like brothers and stuff."
"Hey, Forrest, something I been thinking about."
"I got a very important question to ask you."
"How would you like to go into the shrimping business with me?"
Forrest: "OK."
Bubba:
"Man, I tell you what."
"I got it all figured out, too."
"So many pounds of shrimp will pay off the boat."
"So many pounds for gas. We'll live right on the boat."
"We ain't got to pay no rent."
"We can just work it together, split everything right down the middle."
"Man, I'm telling you, 50-50. "
"Hey, Forrest, all the shrimp you can eat."
Forrest: "That's a fine idea."
Forrest's narration:
"Bubba did have a fine idea."
"I even wrote Jenny and told her all about it."
"I sent her letters."
"Not every day, but almost."
"I told her what I was doing and asked her what she was doing, and told her how I thought about her always."
"And how I was looking forward to getting a letter from her just as soon as she had the time.''
ーーーーーーーーーー
Ironically, the video that was inserted was of Jenny becoming a hippie and moving around aimlessly.
ーーーーーーーーーー
Forrest's narration:
"I'd always let her know that I was OK."
"Then I'd sign each letter, 'Love, Forrest Gump.' "
ーーーーーーーーーー

Unbalanced Power Dynamics, They do affect relationships
In everyday life, there tend to be scandals about how a boss and an employee have been caught in a relationship or, in more extreme cases, even a teacher and student. But when we look into romantic comedies, we also see that this is a very common trope in how everyday people fall in love.
I mean, one of the most common tropes in many forms of romantic comedies, such as movies, books, etc, is fake marriages, in which two people, usually a rich person pays a down-on-their-luck person to pretend to be their partner. And who has the most amount of power in each relationship, the one with either money, authority, or both.
The movies we will be analyzing when discussing the problematic power dynamics in many romantic relationships in rom-coms, "Legally Blonde," "The Proposal," and "Pretty Woman."
Legally Blonde, yes, if you're a "dumb blonde," it is totally fine to harass you...NOT
Tumblr media
Legally Blonde is the story of a young girl named Elle Woods, often giving off the impression of a dumb blonde due to her bubbly personality, whose heart was broken, when her long-time boyfriend, Warner, breaks up with her, claiming he needs "a Jackie, not a Marilyn." Pushed by her desire to get back with Warner, Elle takes and passes the LSATs and gets into the same law school as Warner, Harvard Law School. After turning heads, due to her...unusual personality, she starts to make headway in her career as she helps her professor, Professor Callahan, in the murder case of Brooke Wyndham's husband, with the help of newfound friend Emmett Forrest. Though her aspirations of being with Warner are swiftly taken away, as she learns of his recent engagement to a girl named Vivian, she is able to get through it and take her law school career seriously after helping her new friend Paulette with a doggy custody agreement with her ex-boyfriend. After an incident with Callahan, which I will divulge into deeper later on, she decides that no one will ever see her as anything other than a joke. But with encouragement from her new friends and an inspiring professor, she is able to get back into the court and prove Brooke Wyndham's innocence and find the true killer. After which she rejects Warner, graduates from Harvard with honors, and gets engaged to Emmett.
Now, here's the issue and why I bring up this movie as an example of power dynamics. The incident with Callahan was a sexual harassment issue. Callahan tried to take advantage of Elle, with promises of helping her excel in her career. Basically, telling her that the only way a girl likes her will continue to grow in the field is by "Sleeping her way up." She feels intimated, as he is her professor, a man who everyone respects. She, of course, rejects his advances and decides to leave. As she believes him, as he could be right, he is a symbol of authority in the field of law. She has only experienced rejection and underestimation from the moment she crossed Harvard's doors. Thankfully, she is able to overcome her insecurities and succeed in the face of adversity.
The Proposal, blackmail...how romantic...
Tumblr media
The Proposal tells the story of a business woman, Margaret Tate, who, because of her cold demeanor, is disliked by her employees. Due to her being Canadian, she is required to maintain a work visa, something that she wasn't able to do. So, she blackmails her secretary Andrew into pretending to be her fiancée in order to stay in the US with a marriage visa. Explaining that if she is deported, all his work as her secretary and his desire to be an editor would all be erased. He agrees to her terms only if she publishes his book as soon as this marriage contract is over. They're constantly questioned by US Immigration Officer Gilbertson over the validity of their engagement, claiming that if it is found out that they're committing fraud, Margaret would be deported and Andrew would be imprisoned. In order to strengthen their validity as a couple, Margaret travels to Andrew's hometown, Sitka, Alaska, where, after many shenanigans, they start to genuinely fall in love. When the time comes for their wedding, Margaret can't go through it and decides to tell everyone the truth. She is to be deported back to Canada. But, soon after, Andrew realizes his true feelings for Margaret and goes after her at the airport and confesses his true feelings for her, and they decide to get married for real this time.
The issue with this film is that the way in which this relationship comes stems from blackmail from a form of authority. Margaret is Andrew's boss and she has full control over whether he is able to advance in a field that he has been working really hard in. He has been busting his rump, catering to her every whim, and the fact that all that hard work could be flushed down the toilet, if he does not agree to her terms and conditions is indeed an abuse of power. So, does he really have any other choice in the matter? No...no, he doesn't, and that is very much a good example of an unbalanced power dynamic in a relationship. Even though Andrew is able to make the arrangement work to his advantage, in real life, it isn't always that easy.

Vivian Ward is a "lady of the night" and Edward is a corporate raider, in order to get Vivian to accompany him to a week-long business trip filled with corporate events, he pays her $3000. She accepts, and is given many gifts and etiquette classes in order to prepare her for the upcoming events. After which, Edward opens up to her and they start to become closer. Something more than a simple client and "prostitute" relationship. After an event in which Vivian talks to David, the son of the man that Edward is trying to make a business deal with, Philip, Edward's attorney questions him about it, and Edward reveals the fact that she is "paid company" in a fit of jealousy. Philip later on, approaches Vivian soliciting her after she is done with Edward, which greatly upsets her. Vivian confronts Edward for revealing their relationship, and Edward admits that he was jealous of David, after which, they sleep together and Vivian breaks her "no kissing on the lips" rule, meaning that she is in love with Edward. After their encounter, Edward tries to make a deal with Vivian in which he'd set her up at a very nice condo, give her an allowance, and visit from time to time, this once again, upsets Vivian, as she still feels like she is being treated like a prostitute, rather than his girlfriend. Vivian later explains that she always had a fantasy of being rescued by a knight in shining armor riding on a white horse. Edward later on meets with James, the man he intended to make business with, and rather than purchase his business, he decides to help him save it. This revelation upsets Philip, as he then goes to Edward's apartment trying to confront him about it, but finds Vivian instead, and tries to r*** her. Thankfully, Edward arrives in time and beats up and fires Philip. Vivian rejects Edward's final advance and decides to return home. Taking her actions into consideration, Edward decides to follow Vivian to her apartment in a white limousine and fulfills her fantasy. And they kiss, asserting their feelings for one another.
This entire relationship is on a basis of unbalanced power dynamics. Edward pays for Vivian's company and decides to change her, to make her "better" in the eyes of his society. He gets jealous whenever some other man even speaks to her, almost like he feels a sense of ownership over her and feels entitled to control her actions. And in a more blunt sense, Philip is a more extreme example of what Edward could've been as he sees Vivian, due to her career, as more like an object rather than a person. At first approaching her with a proposition, and then trying to take it by force. They're both men who feel like have power over Vivian, and that's what makes this relationship unbalanced. Thankfully though, Vivian allow these "gentlemen's" opinions affect the way that she perceives herself, she is a loud and proud woman who deserves as much respect as anyone else.
And so, that is all I have to say in respect to unbalanced power dynamics in romantic comedies.
I'll be back soon with our next topic, what will it be?
I wonder...

Keynote Address at the IBMA Trade Show
Thursday, October 22, 1998
By Murphy Henry
"Well, I kind of feel like that’s what I’m going to be doing today because I’m going to be talking about a subject that is near and dear to my heart, and it’s a subject that I think is really important for the bluegrass community, for IBMA, and for all of us if we want to grow and prosper as an industry, and as we move into the 21st century. So my topic today is Women in Bluegrass. I guess you’re not surprised. [Light applause.]"
"The future of bluegrass music simply must include women on stage playing their instruments and singing! "
And history shows us that Bill Monroe himself was both inclusive and supportive of women who played bluegrass, and I’d like to give you a few examples of that.
In this very boxed set that I’ve been talking about, the Columbia reissues, the first eight cuts that Bill Monroe made for Columbia Records featured a woman playing the accordion. Sally Ann Forrester. [Applause.] Sally Ann sang tenor on two numbers, and she took an accordion break on Bluegrass Special. She was with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys for at least three years, which is quite a bit longer than many of the Blue Grass Boys stayed with Monroe. [Laughter.] She was a professional musician in her own right, and she added to Bill Monroe’s show. I always find it interesting and curious that when we mention Sally Ann Forrester and the accordion, everybody chuckles a little bit. And I’m not sure if they’re chuckling because we don’t consider the accordion to be a bluegrass instrument anymore, or because, in the past, we didn’t consider women to be bluegrass players.
Many of you are familiar with Bessie Lee Mauldin, who played the bass and recorded with Bill Monroe for a number of years. [Light applause.] But you’re probably not familiar with a woman named Juanita Sheehan. She and her husband Shorty were part of the house band at the Brown County Jamboree up in Bean Blossom, Indiana. And sometimes when Bill Monroe would come through, he wouldn’t have a full band with him to play a show. So Juanita would back him up on the guitar. And Neil Rosenberg says that Juanita was a wonderful guitar player. Bill Monroe didn’t have a problem playing in a band that had a woman on the guitar.
Many of you also know that when Bill Monroe went out on the road sometimes he wouldn’t carry a full band with him. He went to Washington State in the ’60s without enough musicians to fill out his contract, so he used Vivian Williams on the fiddle for two shows. [Applause.] The thing that Bill Monroe said about Vivian Williams was this. He said, "I have never heard a lady fiddler that could beat Vivian, and a lot of men fiddlers can’t beat her."
Bill Monroe was the one that encouraged Rose Maddox to record her landmark bluegrass album--the first bluegrass album ever recorded by a woman. Bill Monroe played mandolin on the album himself, he sang on the album, and Rose Maddox recorded a number of Bill Monroe’s songs. If you’ve ever had any question in your mind, any doubts about whether women can sing bluegrass, get this album and listen to Rose Maddox. Now, as a little aside about Rose Maddox’s personality, when she came in from California to do this album, she brought her steel player with her. And when she got in the studio, the folks said, "You can’t use a steel on bluegrass music." Rose Maddox had two words for these people. [Tentative laughter.] No, not those! [Loud burst of laughter.] Never thought of that. [More laughter.] Her words were, "Watch me!" [More laughter.] It’s a great album.
"Louise Scruggs, one of the first women to be a booking agent and a manager and one of the best. [Applause.] She delighted in putting Flatt and Scruggs into places that had never even considered having bluegrass music before. And if you like the Carnegie Hall album, you have Louise Scruggs to thank for that, because that was her idea."

Women in Bluegrass
In 1998 Murphy Henry was invited to give the keynote address at the International Bluegrass Music Association's annual World of Bluegrass convention. She talked about women's role in bluegrass from the beginning (Sally Ann Forrester) through the present and beyond. It was a darn good speech. You can read the full text here.
Women in Bluegrass was an 8 to 10 page newsletter, created and edited by Murphy Henry, that focused exclusively on women in bluegrass. It was published pretty much 4 times a year from 1994 through 2003. Publication was suspended when Murphy started writing her book on women in bluegrass, which she is still working on. Each issue featured a lengthy interview, profile, or essay as well as an introduction from the editor, several shorter articles, and reader letters." 1-33
