Day 5: Rebecca Hill
Rebecca Hill is a queer British singer from Bewdley, England. She rose to prominence after appearing on the first series of the then BBC talent contest The Voice UK, auditioning with John Legend's "Ordinary People". She joined Jessie J's team and reached the semi-final of the competition.
Hill's mother is Susan Hill, of English and Welsh heritage. Her father is Stephen Hill, of English heritage. Becky Hill began making music at the age of 14 and started performing in a band called Shaking Trees – receiving BBC Introducing support from Andrew Marston at BBC Hereford & Worcester who selected her band to perform at the Nozstock Festival of Performing Arts.
As well as a live session for Adam Green and Josh Withey at BBC Radio Shropshire. Hill is a supporter of Walsall F.C. In April 2021, she came out as queer on her Twitter account, stating "I've definitely felt uncomfortable branding myself as straight, or anything else for that matter, but queer seems to be the most fitting identity for who I am".
On 11 January 2022, Hill announced her engagement via social media to her long-term partner, Charlie Gardner

EP Review: The Assist - Council Pop Unplugged
The Assist are a Walsall-based band who caught my attention during a stellar year for them last year. After having released their debut album, which made it to #21 in the album charts, they hit my radar through tracks Television Kid and Better Days. Now they’re back with four acoustic renditions of tracks off their debut. It’s called Council Pop Unplugged. (more…) “”

Has anyone else noticed a distinct lack of cucumbers on the shelves?
We've had a brutal day and a half. We deserve a medal, #realboaters award or badge or recognition of some kind or form.
Potential good news on a job front, will keep you informed.
The washing machine's on/off/pause button in broken. David kept pressing it too hard.
My clipper's have stopped clipping, hair sprouting everywhere.
The sole of my right cheap trainer has come loose and is being held in place with 2 laggy bands.
Life is a trial and I need to go shopping.
Departing the Shroppie, such sweet sad sorrow.
Sharp right onto the Staffs & Worcs for little under a mile. Sharp left and immediately the first of 21 single locks that lead up to the just about centre of Wolverhampton town 2 miles away. We flew up said 21 locks in a record breaking time of 3 hours and 15 minutes mainly because there was a boat behind us with 4 crew so there was little time to slouch and slumber.
At the top we moored and I was well knackered. After an hours rest and recuperation we were off for a look round the town. Wolverhampton has some magnificent buildings and was obviously many days gone by a prosperous and thriving town but now whole areas are derelict, like ghost zones and so few people milling about.
A town on it's knees, turn all the empty shops and buildings into accommodation, problems solved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morn we were up and off early. Brand new water lay ahead. At Horseley Fields junction we turned onto the Wyrley & Essington canal (known locally as the Curly Wurly) The plan was to cruise new water to Birchills junction and then take the Walsall canal down to the Birmingham Main Line, stopping at Great Bridge to see our mate Stuart.
Big fuck off mistake.
The W&E is a never used canal consequently is full of weed. Every 100 metres I had to stop to clean the prop and when we eventually reached the Walsall canal our problems increased 100 fold cos the Walsall canal is the local rubbish bin. It is the most putrid waterway we have ever cruised and should be closed down immediately because it is not fit for purpose. We moved at little under 1mph, stopping every 10 minutes to clear the prop of weed and plastic and rope. Just awful, I was close to tears and angry that CRT can let one of their canals fall into a state of such disrepair.
Avid followers may remember Stuart was the leader of a group of street drinkers who we met at Great Bridge lock 2 years ago. As I poked my head through the bridge they were all still there and his face lit up when he saw me.
"Hello" he said in his thick Black Country accent.
"Do you want some weed?"
Ten minutes later a quarter arrived for £50!! David nipped off to the local offie to buy him 12 cans of cider.
It was so good to see him, I thought Covid might have taken him. As we left he said we'll him in another 2 years. Well I can promise we will never do the Walsall canal ever again. But if I want to see my mate Stuart I will get the number 74 bus from Birmingham city centre to Great Bridge and see him that way.
Eventually we reached the BML and thoroughly chastened made our way in the pouring rain into the second city and this is where we sit, for 5 nights only.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a challenge for those Foxes or any other of the fancy vloggers who stick to the beautiful show canals. Do the Walsall canal and Curly Wurly. Bet you can't, would wager me teeth on it.
But we did it because we are #realboaters.

#365daysofbiking An unexpected flash of orange:
August 21st - Returning from Birmingham, the train unexpectedly terminated at Tame Bridge due to a line fault or something, maybe the elastic band snapped.
I couldn’t be bothered with the ride home up through Walsall so hopped on the Tame Valley Canal and then home via Rushall Junction, Park Hall and Aldridge.
Passing through a nondescript bit of towpath near the Birmingham Road, a flash of bright, vivid orange caught my eye.
A gorgeous par of feral marigolds, just trying to make me happy.
They succeeded in their aim.
This journal is moving home. Find out more by clicking here.

1/12/22.
The New Year brings forth so much great new music. But I'm going to go with a reissue from a 1980s band: Ron's Neighbors (just a terrible but awesome band name).
What would have Wild Beasts have sounded like had they recorded in the 1980s? Ron's Neighbours (Walsall, England) gives a hint to that answer coupled with their own 1980s sound influenced by Morrissey, Echo and The Bunnymen and Killing Joke. Additionally, the purchase of the 7" gives you access to a digital only "dub mix" that our friend Snake would call the "London Mid-Town Mini Mix".
"Sitting on Top of the World" is just a beautiful song that sounds like it could've been part of the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Perhaps it sounds like it could be from 2022.

Diamond Head – Live at The Robin 2, Bilston, UK
Tumblr media
Situated near the heart of The Black Country - an area in the West Midlands which gave birth to bands such as Judas Priest and perennial Christmas faves Slade - The Robin 2 in Bilston tonight plays host to other local heroes, Diamond Head. Formed in 1976, about ten miles away in Stourbridge, Diamond Head sat proudly at the forefront of the legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene, going onto inspire many up and coming bands, the most famous of which shall remain safely nameless for the purpose of this piece.
Tumblr media
Opening this close-to-hometown show are Dead Agents from nearby Walsall. Microphone problems render their opening song virtually ineffective, but the smiling and enthusiastic act don't let it bother them, and they soon hit their stride with a succession of catchy hard rock tracks. Another local act, Fires That Divide from just down the road in sunny Sedgley, seem a little lethargic in comparison.  The band shows off some simple but solid riffs, but seems to lack energy as vocalist Kirk Shuttleworth struggles through the set with throat problems - a supportive crowd do their part though, shouting encouragement, and things do improve as they go on.
Tumblr media
A noticeable swelling in crowd size heralds tonight's main event. The dance floor, previously sparse - bordering on unoccupied - is now filled with activity, the expectant, and largely middle-aged, crowd getting ready to throw their grey hair and bald patches around and party like it's 1979. To be fair, the venue isn't filled entirely with quinquagenarian paunches and receding hairlines; there's also a noticeable number younger folk here to appreciate some good old fashioned Heavy Metal as well.
Tumblr media
Guitarist Brian Tatler is the sole remaining member of the original band, and as he follows the others onto the stage to 'Mars, The Bringer of War' by Gustav Holst, the crowd respond with rapturous applause. When the classical music ends, the metal begins, and the five-piece tear into 'Shout at the Devil' from their superb self-titled album from 2016. With his shiny head and ginger beard, singer Rasmus Bom Andersen is clearly having the time of his life, whipping up the crowd, attempting to tease Tatler into singing before playfully snatching the microphone away from him each time, and making sure everyone in the vicinity knows just who wrote that song.
Tumblr media
Apparently not allowed to play anything from their upcoming, as yet untitled new album, tracks from their last record such as 'Diamonds', 'Bones' and 'Set My Soul on Fire' are greeted with as much enthusiasm as the likes of 'Borrowed Time', ‘Call Me', 'In the Heat of the Night', and 'To Heaven From Hell', while an extra loud chorus of approval goes up for classics like 'It's Electric', 'The Prince', 'Helpless', 'Lightning to the Nations', and the 1980 single, 'Shoot Out The Lights'. But of course, 'Am I Evil?' is the one that everyone has come to hear, and the band know this only too well, ripping through it with seemingly more purpose than in years. Coming back on stage for an encore of 'Sucking My Love', the band eventually leaves the stage to thunderous applause. “Are you evil?” screams Bom towards the end of the show. It doesn't take a genius to work out the answer. WORDS AND PHOTOS BY GARY ALCOCK Read the full article

REVIEW ROB HALFORD ‘CONFESS: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY’
Tumblr media
Twenty-five plus years ago (at least) I was working in a local record store in North Miami, Florida. I cannot tell you the date or time, but per the norm, I remember it was sunny and typically boring.  A gentleman came to the register to buy albums and VHS videos. I stared at his American Express Card then back at him a couple of times: Robert Halford, Robert Halford? I thought I knew the name but wasn’t quite sure. I looked intensely one more time. Holy crap, it’s Rob Halford from Judas Priest! At this time in my life, I’d met a few rock stars along the way, but not many. So, this was a huge kick for me. The man who stood before me was a ROCK GOD in the Heavy Metal world, ah, heck, in music, period.  We chatted it up a minute, had a laugh or two, and he was off on this way back to Criteria Studio right down the street. I have never forgotten how nice and personable he was.  Since then, I have met a gaggle of celebrities and downright superstars. Most are nice, some not so much. Halford was a crowning jewel.
Two days ago, Rob Halford’s autobiography “Confess,” arrived at my door. Admittedly, I do not know all of Judas Priest’s catalogue of music. I know the hits, have watched interviews, and seen concert and video footage. I am, however, an avid reader of rock music biographies and autobiographies. Needless to say, his book was right up my alley. What I discovered was a man of many facets, not only musically but personally. Growing up in the industrial town, Walsall, England (the Black Country), Halford details his childhood and upbringing, his love for acting and music. There is much more to his story. Imagine the anxiety of being a gay lad in the early sixties with no role models or anyone to look up to for guidance, and you have got the makings of solitude beyond compare. Closeted most of his adult life, this would continue to be his ‘cross to bear’ until he ‘outed’ himself on MTV in 1998.
His journey is one of triumph, heartache, despair, longing, addiction, and ultimately redemption. Chronicling his rise with Judas Priest, Halford became the GOD OF METAL due to his incredible vocal range and prowess. Let’s face it, the guy can wale. Solo projects, twenty albums with Priest to date, they continue to travel the world as one of the heaviest ‘original’ heavy metal bands. “Confess,” is a no-holes-barred account of a man’s life in and out of the music business  closet. There are no apologies, no excuses. Halford lays it all out for everyone to read. Thank you, Rob, for your honesty and bravery. If I am ever fortunate again to meet Mr. Halford, I am going to give him a big hug.

In this week's episode of the RBP podcast, Mark & Barney are joined by a not-so-"Anonymous" Michael Watts, who regales his hosts with tales of life as the Walsall Observer's "Mick" Watts before reminiscing about his halcyon days as one of Melody Maker's star '70s scribes.
Watts waxes poetic – not to mention humorous – about his encounters with David Bowie, Bob Dylan, the Sex Pistols and others, and about the Maker's rivalry with the N(ew) M(usical) E(xpress). Mark & Barney grill him on the MM's response to punk and hear about colleagues such as Richard Williams and Caroline Coon.
After a brief discussion of the week's featured artist, hilarious country-soul eccentric Swamp Dogg, the trio hear the first of two clips from Martin Aston's 1986 audio interview with Lux Interior and Poison Ivy Rorschach, prompting conversation about the Cramps' inspired mash-up of '50s psychobilly and sub-Hollywood horror – and, 11 years after Lux's death, the band's unique place in post-punk rock'n'roll.
Finally, as Mark presents his highlights of RBP's new library additions, Barney & Michael pitch in with asides on Lou Reed, Talking Heads … and Michael's Chiswick neighbour Sophie Ellis-Bextor!
