huh so. By Chapter 23/24. Shen Qiao is already willingly going with/staying with Yan Wushi. All while ostensibly fully (allowing himself to get?) provoked by YWS's every little provocations.
Chap 23 is when he's like, didn't you say I didn't have enough worldly experience? Yan-zongzhu holds an important position in Northern Zhou, so if I go with you I can definitely learn a lot etc.
and Chap 24 has that part with YWS teasing SQ by joking-not-joking doting on him and the 皮杯 and "Fortunately though he said he was requiring that they travel together, however Yan Wushi actually didn't restrict Shen Qiao's freedom (of movement). Of course, right now it was not convenient for Shen Qiao to go anywhere, most of the time he still stayed in his room like a good boy, sitting by the window listening to the wind, the rain, the rustling leaves, not causing trouble for anyone." (the snowycodex translation is... fine lmao, but I don't agree with some of it - for example, the first part. it imo pretty clearly says "although (he) said (he) required that they travel together" but they translated it as ASKED? that's very different, man. like 要求 does kind of mean ask, but it's more like demand than, like, ask politely...)
and this is in very much contrast to Chap 15, where SQ is like, but do I have to travel with you... and YWS is like, well you can travel with me now as is, or we can fight again and I can take you with me after you're injured or maybe handicapped :) your choice :)"
so what happened in between lmao? Well, I suppose Shen Qiao faces off Yu Ai in Xuandu shan and learns/realizes some things? And at the end of that, he asks Yan Wushi to take him away from there... It's so interesting where SQ draws his lines lol. I can excuse 魔道 but I draw the line at collaborating with the Tujue. (*Yu Ai voice* you can excuse the 魔门???)
But yeah so... clearly by chapter 23/24 already, there was a shift in Shen Qiao's attitude towards Yan Wushi.
(the poster has something to say:
Lao-yan: awww Ah-Qiao, did I grow you on?
Qiaoqiao, internally: ....yeah, like a rash....)

[ZhouYe] Something wrong with being Omega?
(10)
Time passed so slowly but the atmosphere of backstage at the All-Star Event was getting even more intense.
Ye Xiu started to wiggle but decided to rest his body he had felt weakly after the instant heat he experienced.
He smiled inside of him, he always enjoyed the afterglow with his mate.
Zhou Zekai had always been the sweetest and most caring person he had known.
Even right now, the man was drawing circles on his back while humming and lightly singing to him.
Ye Xiu enjoyed it as he forgot where they have been.
On the other hand, the pro players, the staff, and even Chairman Feng were stunned by whatever was happening.
"Jiang, do you think Captain Zhou is serious?" The manager had asked for the third time. For the past five years, he had held on to the guy, he had never heard him speak a full sentence nor had he ever seen the man seething in anger the way he was earlier.
"I-I don't know Boss."
"He's not serious right?" Chairman Feng asked the other pro players mostly those who are All-Star players, Captains, or Vice Captains. The chairman needs validation and support which everyone only answers in the same way.
"I'm not sure Chairman."
"We don't know Captain Zhou that well but he is not the type to joke around."
"If he leaves then that means that's only how much he cares."
"Chairman we are not close with him that much. If even his translator cannot be sure of what he was thinking then we really can't tell."
They replied by saying their opinion which was all on the same page of indirectly saying, 'he's serious'.
Ye Xiu's mind started getting even clearer as time passed. He can now hear the background noise he had never noticed as he focused on the calming sound of his mate.
Ye Xiu can now hear whispers and talks behind his back. Though it was a distance away from him he can vaguely recognize Team Happy's voices and his friends, there was Wang Jiexi, Yu Wenzhou, Chu Yun Xiu, and other players he knew so well.
Slowly Ye Xiu's consciousness started to return. He had remembered the events prior. A man trying to hit on him. Fang Rui, Zhang Jiale, and Lin Jingyan coming.
Seconds turn to minutes and he eventually opens his eyes. He can see backstage and can now feel and hear everyone.
Ye Xiu was feeling embarrassed but he decided to breathe in before he acts shamelessly that nothing happened.
Ye Xiu tapped Zhou Zekai's back to let him know that he was awake already.
"Senior. Okay?" Zhou Zekai asked after he felt the tap.
"I'm okay now Xiao Zhou, you can put me down." He replied to the man.
Zhou Zekai slowly and carefully puts Ye Xiu down as he escorts him.
"Ye Xiu. You're finally awake. Are you okay? Do you want some water?" Su Mucheng asked.
"I'm fine Mucheng. Have you caught the man?" He asked trying to lead the conversation.
Before Su Mucheng answered, Chairman Feng, came and said, "He was in custody now. We would review the security so that this won't happen again."
"Oh! Chairman, you're here."
"Of course I am."
"Yes, next time Alliance should be more careful with the entrance backstage. Make sure to have it guarded by securities." Ye Xiu added while nodding completely misdirecting the topic which everyone was holding.
Zhou Zekai is still beside him acting like a damn leech bodyguard.
Discussion about securities had been going the way he expected when one of Samsara's managers tried to come close slightly trembling as he voice, "Captain Zhou."
Zhou Zekai only looked at them once and blatantly ignored them.
Ye Xiu paused on talking with other pro players about safety and security and such. He looked at the scene and felt the heavy atmosphere.
He cannot help but asked the nearest person to him, "Did something happen with Samsara?"
"Would you believe Senior, that Captain Zhou threatened the team saying he won't be modeling anymore or he will retire?" Chu Yunxiu replied since she was the person beside Ye Xiu.
"He did?" Ye Xiu was even more shocked.
"Yeah. Captain Zhou was very mad when they tried to tell him to let you go."
"Ah." Ye Xiu was shaking his head.
Who told them to piss an overprotective Alpha?
He thought.
"Captain. Can we at least talk.."
"No."
Zhou Zekai said as he turn his head away from them and continue looking somewhere else.
It was so awkward that everyone backstage felt sweat on their forehead.
*sigh*
It was a simple sigh that breaks the momentum. Ye Xiu then said, "Xiao Zhou. Talk to your team."
Zhou Zekai felt betrayed as his eyes grew bigger with the shock but then he also felt his rage meter going off.
He cannot decide but it was Xiu's decision. He holds his hair and messed it as he concludes that he really needs to talk but then these people tried to take his Xiu away from him.
He doesn't like them.
A defeated sigh before he fixed himself and looked at his managers.
"I entered this industry to find him," Zhou Zekai said slowly but surely his voice reverberating.
"Y-yes Captain Zhou? What do you mean?" The manager asked perplexed after hearing the man say a full sentence more than his 5 words...
"I played in Samsara to beat him." Zhou Zekai continued.
"Do you mean, your goal is to beat God Ye??" Both the managers and the entire people in the back were still thinking it was some kind of fever dream. Zhou Zekai and speaking in one sentence should have never happened...
"I took those modeling to support build Samsara." Zhou Zekai said looking intently at the manager and continuing his speech while still shocking the entire people hearing his clear dominant voice.
"So that I can recreate a team he had. A dynasty he once had."
"Yes- yes, Captain Zhou, we're definitely going to make it." The managers can't still get what he was pointing and Zhou Zekai had started getting annoyed. He turn around and started walking towards where Ye Xiu is.
He then said,
"I work hard to become the number one for him."
"..." Silence was the only answer he received, seemingly the manager had caught what he was trying to say... He let out,
"I played GLORY for him."
"..." Sweat drops can be seen on the forehead of many as they saw and feel the intense feeling and declaration.
"I did all of that so that I can prove myself to everyone."
Zhou Zekai stops as he reached his Xiu.
"YE.XIU.IS.MINE." He shouted with not so loud voice but clearly overbearing while hugging the said man.
"Only I deserve him. Only I can stand by his side." He added with hostility seen in his eyes. The handsome face of the alliance was distorted as he looked at his team's manager and warned them.
"No one can ever take him away from me. HE.IS.MINE."

The Tragedy of Song Huai'en
In the spirit of full disclosure, I’m a Liu Duan Duan fangirl. Unapologetically so. This is a spoiler filled post, so reader discretion is advised. (Written with some inputs from @terribleteej)
Tumblr media
When we first meet Song Huai’en, we don’t see him. The focus is fully on Xiao Qi (a brilliant Zhou Ye Wei), like it should be, because he is the male lead. And this was his introduction scene. I, of course noticed him because I started this show forLiu Duan Duan. At this point, he is just a background figure – standing half a step behind Xiao Qi, a lieutenant bellowing his General’s orders.
When we next meet him, we learn that he is Xiao Qi’s right-hand man. Walking behind him, following his orders, fiercely loyal and protective of his General.
Tumblr media
Decked in all black, he lurks in the shadows. In fact, he is Xiao Qi’s shadow – something that both becomes the cause of his meteoric rise and terrible downfall. But more on that later.
As the episodes go, we see him as this loveable dork, who likes to playfully banter with his friends. We see him gently tease Xiao Qi, and sportingly let people tease him. One cannot help but love this sweet man. The fact that he looks super pretty is just a bonus. But up until this point, he is, as the poster would have us believe, a side character.
Tumblr media
In fact, based on that poster, I assumed that Zitan was the second lead. Huai’en did not even feature much during A’Wu’s abduction and subsequent rescue. A brief, flash in the pan appearance follows when A’Wu and Xiao Qi are attacked, but here, we do see that this man can be very intimidating, something that comes to play later.
Tumblr media
However, a discerning viewer might notice that in the small appearances that the character is making, his eyes seem to be trailing A’Wu. He is very quietly crushing on her and at this juncture of the show, we cannot really blame him. A’Wu is stunning and as a young man, he was attracted. Understandable and even innocent.
It is only when we get to Huizhou that we see Song Huai’en in his element. He is leading the army, defending the city, working with A’Wu, Pang Gui, and Mou Lian to make sure that Huishou does not fall. This is the brave General who shines like a bright star, earning A’Wu’s trust and respect, and Yu Xiu’s undying devotion in the process.
Tumblr media
At this point in the series, to the viewers at least, Huai’en’s crush on A’Wu becomes obvious in the little queries, the shy smiles, and the feeble excuses to see her. Before he can introspect on his reasons for wanting to see A’Wu, Ma Zi Lu goes tyrannical and Huai’en has to put aside his personal jumble of feelings to focus on the chaos that Zi Lu has unleashed. In trying to do so, he is tortured, believes that he failed in doing the task that A’Wu assigned him and in doing so, falls in his own eyes. One thing that I would like to point out is that here is where he also sustains a significant injury to his head.
Why am I talking about this scene? I mean, it was just whumping, and Pang Gui got massively whumped, so why the focus on Huai’en’s whump? Because unlike Pan Gui, Huai’en suffered a cranial injury. An injury to the head is not something to be brushed off easily. Even a tiny clot in the brain can change a person drastically. And Huai’en does change. He pretty much splits into two – Song Huai’en and Su Yi Bo. I believe that some of it was his inherent fragility, exacerbated by an injury to head that was never addressed. He comes back, all guns blazing, and shoots his arrow to put an end to Ma Zi Lu’s reign of terror.
The chaos reined in, he settles back to his comfortable familiarity and all seems normal. However, with Xiao Qi’s presence at the Yuzhang Manor, things are not what they were before. Huia’en too, is no longer who he was before. The cracks are hairline at this point, so no one notices it. But change is there. He starts to pull back from Xiao Qi and by extension, A’Wu.
On some level, he too understands that his desire for A’Wu is not right, so he holds himself back. The scene below is a perfect example of it.
Tumblr media
He comes in with medicines and a plant. A plant that A’Wu had asked him to take care of. Clearly, he wanted to show her that he did what she had asked him to do, but then, when A-Xue jumps to the conclusion that the plant was for Yu Xiu, like the medicines, Huai’en quietly surrenders, knowing that it would be improper for him to harbor any kind of feelings for A’Wu. A theme we see repeated in his terrified reaction to his dream.
Tumblr media
Granted it happened after Xiao Qi called him out on his frequent visits to A’Wu, but here is a man who understands he’s crossed a line he shouldn’t have. This is a critical juncture for his character. This is where we first realize that not everything is copacetic with Song Huai’en. Suddenly, his little rueful dialogues early on about Xiao Qi selling away his material possessions take whole different meaning. This is where we learn that this brave soldier from a humble background is dazzled by the material possessions and wealth that is in abundance in the capital. This is where we see that Huai’en is not a mini-Xiao Qi. That in comparison to Xiao Qi, he fails.
Here, I would like to call attention to Xiao Qi’s personality. Xiao Qi is, simply put, larger than life. He is a brilliant General, a loving husband, an adept politician, with iron control on his desires. In some ways, he practically has no vices. If he has a flaw, it is that he is perhaps a tad too patient. What I’m getting at here is that Xiao Qi is like a saint. He is a standard that is almost impossible to achieve.
Huai’en, being his shadow and arguably his best friend, understands that. He is keenlyaware that he is not Xiao Qi and as people start comparing him, his bravery, and his valor to Xiao Qi, it begins to grate on him. If you have ever had a sibling who outshines you in every aspect, you would understand how that slowly chips away at your confidence. All your merits are recognized, but they are perennially the lesser than that of the golden child. This is the crux of Huai’en’s problems. He is eternally the second best.
Wang Lin later states that Huai’en has an inferiority complex, and he is absolutely right. At this stage, Huai’en begins to realize just how wide the chasm that separates him, and Xiao Qi is. And that starts eating at him. The laughing, joking, shy Huai’en slowly starts to retreat into his shell. Both as a scared reaction and as a punishment to himself, he latches on to Yu Xiu.
Why Yu Xiu, though, one might ask. To some, it may look like him trapping her in a loveless marriage. I, however, saw it as him deciding to do the right thing and step away from A’Wu. It was also a bit of if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you are with. He chose a woman he liked enough to give himself a chance to love someone else other than the one forbidden to him.
And love her, he does. But if you are looking for the extravagant flair and loud actions declaring his love, like Xiao Qi does for A’Wu (the second marriage, for example), you won’t find it. Why? Because the entire arc of Song Huai’en is that he is not Xiao Qi.
With A'Wu and Xiao Qi, they have the same love language. But as someone who's been married for 13+ years, I can say that is rare. Most cases, the love languages of couples are different and it takes some time for each to fully understand the language the other is speaking. Time that the two did not get. Yu Xiu never hid her feelings for him. She was upfront with it. So, what was the language that Song Huai’en speaking?
Yu Xiu says he treats her well. Gives her gifts, medicines, clothes, jewelry. Having grown up poor and struggling, money is a big deal to Song Huai’en. Every human being shows their love to their partners with the one thing about themselves that they value the most. For some, it’s food. Some singing. Huai’en is a battle-hardened killer. That’s what he is good at. That can’t be the language of love. So, what else can he do? He showers her with gifts. That is his love language. Yu Xiu wanted more, but Huai’en is not one for big declarations.
Carrying her in his arms is the biggest declaration he would ever make. His love shows in the softness of the tone that he speaks to her in. His love shows in his reaction to her tears. In the soft smiles he gives her. In his horrified reaction when he sees her at the city gates. The battle-hardened Duke is suddenly reduced to a terrified, trembling man. He tells her to go away, repeatedly.
Huai’en is not Zitan. He is not delusional. He knows that there’s a good chance that he would end up dead or worse. He did not want Yu Xiu to witness that. As their conversation proceeds, you see his heart breaking in his eyes.
Tumblr media
(Man, Liu Duan Duan spoke VOLUMES through his eyes. Somebody give this man an award already!). And then, he shoots an arrow at her. Only, it misses her. Or does it? An archer of Song Huai’en’s caliber would never miss a shot that easy. This was his way of scaring her into going away, because Yu Xiu was not listening to his words. This was also his way of trying to show the world that she was not his weakness. Only, this backfires and Yu Xiu, in a desperate attempt to make him see reason, jumps from there. The moment she fell, Song Huai’en broke. Shattered.
But he did not weep. Did not seem to mourn her loss. He just moved on. Because, again, Song Huai’en is not one to show big emotions. Not so publicly. Look at his eyes instead. Listen to his gasp of horror and pain. If he had lived through the coup, Huai’en would have mourned Yu Xiu in solitude. But not while thousands of eyes were on him.
But what of the scene where he pushes Yu Xiu and orders her to stay home? He did try to be gentle. He did try, as lovingly as he could, to tell her to stay away from it, but she refused. She dug her heels in. And with so many people watching, and the clock ticking, he snapped. We have all said and done things to the people we love that we should not have. That’s human. I will not crucify him for this one event.
An argument can be made against my theory of him not willing to show his pain in public – that he wept in that carriage with Wang Su when he learned of the Empress Dowager wanting to kill him and the news of Xiao Qi’s death reached him. Yes, he cried. He cried because with Wang Su, was private and safe to show the emotions. (He didn’t know of the assassins waiting outside). Something that the city gates most certainly were not. At the city gate, he lets the soldier in him take over. But in the carriage, he is still Song Huai’en.
Which brings me to Wang Su and by extension Wang Lin. Wang Lin, being the snake that he is, tells Huai’en exactly what he wants to hear. Wang Lin is a master manipulator; he’s made his entire career out of being the devil on people’s shoulders. Huai’en was just not equipped to shut out that insidious voice. It had been previously established that Huai’en did not understand court politics as well as Xiao Qi did, so the puppet did not see the strings till it was very late.
Wang Lin, however, for all his tricks, forgot a crucial thing. That Song Huai’en is a Ningshou General. The army that has, on more than one occasion, changed the course of history with their blades. And that Huai’en is a soldier through and through. Something Wang Lin should have realized with Maidservant Xu’s stabbing, but he didn’t. He missed just how easy it is for Huai’en to switch from a human to a killing machine. He did not realize that it was Su Yi Bo that he was talking to when he told Huai’en that he could not let Xu Gu Gu see him. When she does see him, he instantly goes into the soldier following orders mode. It was a crucial bit that Wang Lin missed. It was a mistake that ultimately cost him his life.
That cold blooded killer is the one that resurfaces with the killing of Hu Yao. Yet again, I have seen people rage at him for killing her and yes, it was not pleasant to see, but guess what? They were at war. They were both fulfilling the role of a soldier. One died, one moved on. It hurt him to watch his comrade fall under his own blade, you can see it on his face, but the soldier marched on.
Tumblr media
By now, Su Yi Bo, the Edward Hyde to Song Huai’en’s Henry Jekyll, is fighting Huai’en for control. He’s at war, both inside and out. But he still doesn’t show it. He puts his game face on and goes on to fulfill the one dream that both the viewers and Huai’en himself have nurtured for a very long time – he flings Zitan out of the throne. (Man, that was glorious!). Allows Wang Lin to sit on it, only to stab him in the back, both literally and metaphorically.
When Wang Lin turned his back on Huai'en, the real soldier --a General of NIngzhou-- stepped out and killed the opposition leader, and thus did as he has been trained to do all his life. Fight and conquer and take from the enemy. He knewWang Lin was the enemy in the end and he rose to the surface long enough to do what he has been trained to do all his life. But immediately after that, Su Yi Bo takes over.
And then, and only then, does he speak of his real feelings. Feelings that he has buried deep in his heart. Feelings of inadequacy and neglect. Feelings of being the second best. The silent fight he fought all his life. The one thing he wanted to do – get out of Xiao Qi’s shadow. That was his motivating factor. By this point, his proposition to A’Wu is more of a snub to Xiao Qi than a love declaration for A’Wu. He knows very well she would not accept him. And at this point, he no longer cares. He is broken beyond repair. He is unstable, switching between Song Huai’en and Su Yi Bo.
Song Huai’en is the one that killed Wang Lin and threw Zitan away. Su Yi Bo is the one that killed Hu Yao and propositioned A’Wu. Su Yi Bo is the one who gets shot by the arrow, but Huai’en is the one that pleads with Xiao Qi to take him back to Ningshou with his dying breath. And then, Xiao weeps.
Xiao Qi weeps at the loss of his best friend. His brother. Arguably the one he loved the most after A’Wu. Xiao Qi is the first to see the crack in Huai’en. Upon discovering the evidence of pilfering, Xiao Qi hopes that his veiled insinuation and gentle nudges will put Huai’en in the right path and for a time, it does. But then, the Empress Dowager pulls them apart by sending Huai’en as flood relief. By the time Xiao Qi meets Huai’en again, he is aware of what the court is doing. By then, Xiao Qi has already been framed for Zilong’s murder, has lost a chunk of his soldiers and has been labeled a traitor.
When Huai’en and Xiao Qi meet at the gate, Wang Lin’s claws are already deep into Huai’en. When Xiao Qi addresses him as Su Yi Bo, he has already realized that his best friend and brother is lost. Cracked. Xiao Qi mourns the loss of his trusted General and yet, holds on to the hope that Huai’en will pull through. But as a more than a month passes and Huai’en doesn’t come to visit them, Xiao Qi has to accept that things will never go back to being the way they were.
Yet, it is Xiao Qi’s love for his brother-in-arms that makes him adopt Huai’en and Yu Xiu’s son. It is of note that Huai’en did not name his son. It may not the sign of neglect that it is perceived to be. I know that in some parts of the world, there was a custom to not give a baby a name for he first six months of its life for the simple reason that infant mortality was very high. Once the baby was relatively safe, the parents would name them. I don’t know if this was a thing in ancient China, but it might be. By the time the child became old enough to be named, Huai’en is already splitting, being pulled in a hundred different directions. He never got a chance because of the Roaring Tornado of chaos in the capital that kept him too busy to be able to focus on his home. He did not name his child. He should have, but he didn’t.
He was undoubtedly the most tragic character in the end. He broke and he did some things that are very hard to forgive, but those were done in the throes of insanity. Not bitter hatefulness. Zitan was hateful, Zi Lu was hateful. Wang Lin was consumed with hate. Wanru and Jin’er fed the hate in their heart, enjoyed it even. The Empress Dowager hated the whole world. Huai’en, however, was just tragic.
At the end of the day, I guess what I’m saying is that Song Huai’en is not a villain. He is human. A fallible, flawed, foolish one, but human, nonetheless. Conflicted, controlled, corrupted, confused, cracked, and compromised. And he is not, as the poster would have us believe, a support character. He was the second lead of this story and that is a hill I will plant my stake on.

September 29 Day Countdown (28/29): 2020/08/08 Interview with Tangerine Entertainment 橘子娱乐: “The world gave me stories; I replied with songs”
I sing so many OSTs because… I want to be heard by everyone.
There’s so much insecurity. Is everyone sick of listening to me sing? “Ah, we’re sick of it” Will I be able to keep singing? “Ah, I don’t know”
I- I’ve always been a very shy person. Even now, you see me talking so much, but at heart I’m still that shy person. I’m afraid of wasting people’s time when I talk—that they don’t like to listen to me.
I never thought I’d become a singer, never imagined I’d be in this industry. Everyone thinks this industry is so unreachable—how do you do it, how do you get seen?
So I thought I’d go into medicine, find a more… stable job. At that time, I was studying non-stop—studying studying studying translating translating translating. The only classes I passed were because the teacher- “Look at your classmate Zhou Shen; I don’t know if he understands anything, but he still comes to class every single day” (*bends over laughing quietly*) “So I gave him a passing grade.” (*bends over laughing again*)
Life really has more plot twists than dramas. I had just decided to study music, had just finished a semester, and then I got vocal cord lesions, lost my voice. I was like- “aaaahhh what kind of big cosmic joke is this?” (*helpless laughter*)
I pondered over a lot of questions. I even considered- even if I successfully completed my studies, would I be able to become a music teacher? But it was later, later in my studies, I asked my teacher, “Teacher, what was the happiest period of your life?” My teacher, he said, he’s always been singing opera since he was young—he didn’t come back to school to teach until he was in his fifties, sixties. I think, this kind of life is so wonderful—to always be doing what you love, bringing its fullest potential into reality.
It was really hard to win them [my parents] over—when we weren’t refusing to talk to each other, we were arguing: (*acts out two phonelines*) “No I’m going to study music!” “I’m not giving you money for living expenses!”
I think my experience studying abroad made me much more resilient. All the hardships that come your way, you have to face them—you can’t avoid them.
In Ukraine, there were difficulties even with the language. Even when I was getting groceries I got yelled at. Because, you buy something that costs maybe 10 dollars—I gave them a 500 dollar bill to give back change, and they were (*angry shouting noise*) so aggressive. (*laughs*) But at that time, I didn’t understand what they were saying! I felt so helpless; I grabbed all the money I had and offered it (*holds out hands together palm up*)—because I didn’t know which bill they wanted, I just felt like- they were so angry. I was like, what bill do you want so you won’t be angry? (*laughs helplessly and buries head in hands*)
So at that time you feel really helpless—it was like, wherever you went everyone was so hostile. You’re already lonely and exhausted—why did you have to keep encountering this kind of misery too?
I’m a very insecure person. I can’t talk about it with my parents—it would only stress them out. Even now, every time I call home they say: “Son, you have to take good care of yourself our there. Mom and dad really don’t know how to support you. We don’t even know how you work in this industry—all we know is that you seem to be getting skinnier and skinnier every time we see you on TV.”
(About the 20-minute mash-up “Thank you for listening to me sing these songs” 《谢谢你听过我唱过的这些歌》, featuring almost all the OSTs Zhou Shen has ever sung except the ones he couldn’t get the copyright for in time:) We were working on it for quite a while, but there were a lot of setbacks. The first version of it, it wasn’t really what I wanted, so I found friends to help me rearrange it from scratch last-minute, with only about 7 or 8 days left to do it. And then during rehearsals, there were more areas that I wasn’t satisfied with, so yesterday (2020/07/24), we stayed up very late, worked with the music director Lao Guoxian to iron everything out.
(Interviewer: Which song do you think has the most meaning to you?) Most meaningful song is, of course, Da Yu. Because so many of the songs, they only came after Da Yu, because others heard Da Yu and thought eh? Getting this person to sing my song might not be a bad idea.
Originally, I wanted to announce the establishment of the studio on July 25 (debut anniversary), but because the account had to get verified by Weibo, immediately after it got verified- (*laughs*) everyone found it! So I decided, okay, let’s just go ahead and announce it.
Of course you feel anxious—because you don’t know what kind of future you’re facing. I think I first want to contemplate a clear direction for myself.
(About himself:) Very noisy. Very dull. In letting the audience get to know me, more and more, I let myself go. (Interviewer: During the Voice of China, you were very green.) Gentle. Bashful. I remember him fondly too.

ZS (to the staff): Do I need to do the clapperboard?
LKQ: *mumbles about something else*
ZS, staring at him: We’re starting the interview.
LKQ: Oh. Then I can’t do this wrong/Then I can’t say this. (T/N: Sorry, can’t hear very well which one he means)
ZS (to the staff): Do I need to do the clapperboard? *opens his arms to do the motion, but the interviewer stops him*
Interviewer: No need, no need.
ZS sits properly again.
LKQ, grabbing the microphone to look at the placard on it: What is this for? (ZS: It’s Wen Yu Xin Tian Di. Alright.)
I will be putting the rest under a cut because it’s LONG.
Interviewer: Ok, so the group named Qin Shen Shen has finally reunited. Let’s start by saying hi to the viewers of Wen Yu Xin Tian Di.
(The next part has been translated in part 10/? ---- 0:19 to 1:00 in the vid. The questions concerned how they felt after reuniting and QSS replied that it was like nothing had changed)
Interviewer: Then, in the past months, have you been watching what the other’s been doing?
LKQ: Sure, one time or two. *quietly starts to laugh*
ZS, chortling: What does it mean, one time or two?
LKQ: I mean, messaging (each other). (ZS, understanding: Ah, ahh...) We did, we did, we did... (ZS: Yes, of course we contacted each other) Because recently...not recently-- this entire past year, a lot of things happened all around the world. (ZS: Yes) Whether in Hong Kong, or in the mainland...So, many times, we’d... check how the other’s doing.
(The next part is translated in part 10/? ---- 1:23 to 1:42 in the vid.)
Interviewer: Then, have the two of you been checking out the 2nd season of “Wo Men De Ge”?
Both: Of course!
LKQ: A show with such a high rate of viewership...you got to watch at least a little....There’s a 25 years old newcomer in there.
ZS, laughing: Aiya......he formed a new *whispers* Zuo Lin You Li now. *giggles* Can the mic pick this up? *whispers closer to the mic* Zuo Lin You Li.
(T/N: Alan Tam aka Tan Yong Lin keeps saying he’s 25 even though he’s like...70. He and Li Keqin are friends and they used to form a duo called “Zuo Lin You Li”, meaning, literally, “Lin on the left, Li on the right” So Zhou Shen’s comment is in reference to how Alan Tam joked that the Alan Tam/Li Jian group on S2 is the new “Zuo Lin You Li”).
Interviewer: Is there any performance that left a deep impression?
ZS, looking at LKQ: There are quite a few!
LKQ, nodding: Yeah, quite a few groups are really good.
ZS: Yeah, and all their arrangements are really great. Especially-- (with LKQ: Shi Tou!)
LKQ: Yeah, Shi Tou. I really like Shi Tou’s group. (ZS, talking at the same time: Shi Tou’s arrangements are *thumbs up* As expected, he’s Shi Tou) Whoa, the arrangements he does *appreciative sound*. That...that one recently... “Wang Qing Shui”. (ZS: Oh! Right, right, right.) It’s very good. Really, very good. And then...there’s also...that newcomer I was talking about just now -- the *using quotation marks with his fingers* “NEW ZUO LIN YOU LI”...
ZS, whispering again: Zuo Lin You Li.
LKQ: ....is not bad either. *giggles*
ZS: Is it just “not bad”...? ...Which “Zuo Lin You Li” do you prefer? *accidentally hits himself in the face with the mic and lets out a surprised shout, before holding his cheek* I really can’t talk nonsense after all! ;;;
LKQ, belatedly but with an abrupt reaction: What do you mean “which” Zuo Lin You Li????! There’s only one Zuo Lin You Li!!
ZS: ...I was wrong. That’s why I got hit by the mic just now. (LKQ: The other is a cover, a cover! *laughs*) Come now, this question should be asked by the interviewer. Three, two, one...
Interviewer: Then...teacher Keqin, do you feel like your position is being threatened?
ZS: Beating this much around the bush? Ask him in a more direct way. Three, two, one.
LKQ: Mm. One more time, one more time, one more time.
The interviewer actually doesn’t add anything, so LKQ replies:
LKQ: Uh, aiyo *closes his eyes to think* First of all, it’s completely different. I think.......two people........Actually, I talked about it with the School Director (Alan Tam’s nickname) on the phone many times. (ZS: Oh really!) He keeps saying “eh, how about the 3 of us perform once?”
ZS: What would that be called? “Zuo Lin You... Li Li”?
LKQ: “Zuo Lin Er Li” (T/N: literally, “Left Lin, Two Li”).
ZS: Oh... “Zuo Li Er Li”.
LKQ: Because it’s two “Li”s.
ZS: ... Is it not because you’re too “Er”? (T/N: the same “Er”, as in “two”, is also a term used to say that someone is silly / not very bright /a bit dense, if you apply it to describe a person. Not sure I am pinpointing the nuance correctly in English. Anyways, ZS’s face as soon as he says that:)
Tumblr media
LKQ: .... *shrugs* It doesn’t matter. I think, in any case, music is about having more different collaborations with people. (ZS: Okay. *giggles*) Mm. I think so. *nods* Next time.
ZS (to the camera): Everyone can look forward to “Zuo Lin Er Li.” (LKQ: *laughs* Ok)
Interviewer: This time you’re singing two songs, one is “Tokyo Love Story”, the other is “Under Mount Fuji”. Can you tell everyone why you chose these two songs?
ZS: Well, first off, “Under Mount Fuji” is because I strongly insisted on it. (LKQ agrees) And I insisted on us singing the Cantonese version. Because I really like this song’s lyrics in Cantonese. It’s really, just...Because usually, when us people who don’t speak Cantonese listen to Cantonese songs, we’ll often look up the lyrics and be moved by them. And “Under Mount Fuji” is one of those songs. So I think, if I can sing with teacher Keqin, we must definitely sing this one. *smiles and puts hand over mouth* I keep on coming here to realise dreams.
LKQ: What he said just now, I never heard it before. (ZS: But it’s true!) I know! And...when he told me we should sing this song, I told him “actually, a few years back, I sang it-- (ZS: --on that show where he showed his mouth) ... *LKQ tries not to laugh* I actually sang it, is that ok-- (ZS, instantly pointing at the camera: Eh! Everyone look it up on the net, you’ll see how precise and accurate what I said is. Because his outfit and styling on that show is simply... “showing the mouth”.)
The styling at issue:
Tumblr media
ZS giggles, while LKQ looks away and licks his lips.
LKQ, finally continuing: And then he told me that what we’d sing would be a version sung with harmonisation. That a version sung by two people is different. So I said “Ok lah, ok lah. Last time, I sang in Cantonese, this time I can sing it in Mandarin.” In the end, it’s still Cantonese.
ZS: Yes, because this, this, this *sighs* I just like it...
LKQ, interrupting (to the camera): It’s easier for me!!!!! OK.
Interviewer (to LKQ): Then, do you think his (ZS) Cantonese has improved?
LKQ: *thinks* (ZS laughs and puts the mic closer to his mouth) He doesn’t speak a lot.
ZS: *snorts* SINGING-WISE.
LKQ: Singing... It’s similar. (ZS opens wide eyes at him) It’s similar to my Mandarin!
ZS, shaking head: Oh that... (LKQ: Do you think I improved?) It’s way better than your Mandarin! (LKQ: Oh, really? I can’t tell at all!)
Both laugh.
LKQ: Okay lah~ (to the camera) His Cantonese is really okay.
ZS: As for teacher Keqin, what I didn’t know was that his Mandarin isn’t bad to the extent that...wait no. *bursts out laughing along with LKQ* (LKQ: It...it didn’t regress!) It’s not THAAAAT bad. Yeah, it didn’t regress too much. (LKQ: Not too much, ok) *motions with hand* A teeny bit. A bit. A teeny weeny bit. (LKQ tries to imitate the first way of saying ‘a tiny bit’ i.e. yi diu diu)
LKQ: There’s a second song: Tokyo Love Story.
ZS: Tokyo Love Story. Should be a song that’s part of many people’s memories.
LKQ: *motions towards different corners of the ceiling* Yeah. Many people. Many people’s memory (ZS follows his hands with his eyes, going ???) I actually didn’t watch that drama. It’s not even part of my era. (ZS: I didn’t watch that drama either but that song, I did hear it once or twice) Ohhh. It’s a nice song.
ZS: Yes, it’s a nice song. It counts as a challenge, actually.
LKQ: Yes, it’s a challenge. Because there’s a part in Japanese.
ZS, leaning towards LKQ but speaking into the mic: This time...this time teacher Keqin will sing in Japanese.
LKQ: Japanese is of course easy for you.
ZS: It’s okay, it’s not that “easy” either. But...(to the camera) teacher Keqin singing in Japanese is really cute.
LKQ holds onto the table and breathes in deeply.
Interviewer: How is it cute?
ZS: Mm, you’ll just know when you hear it. It’s just very cute. Super cute. Maybe it’s just... *giggles*
LKQ: I tell you...when things are being described with the word “cute”.....you need to go back and seriously re-examine yourself. (ZS, horrified: Haaaahhh?!) *bursts out laughing*
ZS, still horrified: People often tell me I’m very cute!! *holds chest*
LKQ: Hey! People always tell me “Keqin, your dancing is very cute”! (ZS: People tell me “Zhou Shen, you’re very cute as a person”!!) ..... Have you ever heard anyone say that Aaron Kwok’s dancing is “cute”? *looks at him meaningfully*
ZS, staring: .................... I don’t want to film this anymore.
LKQ: *giggles*
ZS, again in sudden horror: HAH?! (LKQ: Mm *nods*) ..............*calms down* I want to be serious. (LKQ: Mm.) In the future, when people tell me I’m cute, I’ll know what they mean...Okay.
LKQ: It means you have “room for improvement”.
ZS, at the same time (to the interviewer): Teacher, am I cute?
Interviewer: Super cute.
ZS pulls a horrified face.
ZS (to the interviewer): You haven’t been listening at all to our conversation, have you??? (to LKQ) Did you see? He just said I’m super cute -- you talk with him. *pushes the mic into LKQ’s hands and pretends to leave*
LKQ: *laughs* Come back, come back. (ZS comes back and sits) He said you have “room for improvement”. (ZS: Oomph!) It’s still good. Still good. You’re already very good (ZS, in a sharp squawking voice while pointing at LKQ: You’re defending him???) You’re already very good! Okay, okay.
Interviewer: Are there any obstacles to singing in Japanese?
LKQ: Whoa! *points at ZS* Well there definitely aren’t any obstacles for him, but for me... (ZS: Why aren’t there obstacles for me? There are!) I never sang in Japanese, and....
ZS re-adjusts the grasp he has on the mic, which makes it jump at little and causes LKQ to think he wants him to hold it. LKQ reaches out for it, but ZS backs off:
ZS, reassuring: It’s okay! It just fell a bit. (LKQ: Oh, oh, ok.) *makes the mic jump again to tease LKQ*
LKQ: I was in confinement, so I had a lot of time. (ZS makes the mic jump again) So I just practiced a lot. Also, my wife understand a little bit of Japanese. (ZS, genuinely surprised: Oooh!) Yeah, so I asked her everyday for advice. (ZS: Oooooh!) ...Yeah. So! If I don’t sing well, it’s not my problem. It’s hers.
ZS: My God. I’ve definitely learned that way of answering questions. (LKQ: It’s because she didn’t teach me well) *laughs* As expected, you can learn a lot from senior singers. (LKQ just sways impishly)
Interviewer: Then, Zhou Shen, why don’t you have any problems with Japanese? (ZS, instantly: NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS)
LKQ bursts out laughing.
Interviewer: In the future, will you fulfil the netizens’ wish of seeing more of your interactions and more of your collaborations?
ZS: ? We have quite a lot of interactions? ... Maybe not on Weibo. It’s still okay, it’s not to the extent that we don’t interact at all.
LKQ: Do you need a bit more?
ZS: How so? Do we have to tag each other daily on Weibo? *laughs* That’s too tiring, each time I post on Weibo, I reply to the first 20 comments.
LKQ: Yeah, each morning after playing ball...ah! You can’t get up in the mornings.
ZS: Yeah...so...in the mornings don’t look for me.
LKQ: Your morning is my afternoon. (ZS: In the mornings, I’m not available) Yeah, after playing ball...
ZS: Ah! We should sing that song: *sings* “Your nighttime is my daytime~" -- you don’t know this song.
LKQ: If you sing “Like Daytime Fails to Understand the Night’s Darkness” (a song by Na Ying), then I know.
ZS, singing that song: You’ll never understand my sadness...!
LKQ, imitating, but exaggerating ZS’ hand movement: You’ll never UNderstand... UNDerstand!
ZS: Eh. Na Jie. You saw this right? This is what teacher Keqin said. *laughs*

[FULL] E9 _ Our Songs
- Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning - Zhou Huajian x Jiang Yiqiao - Na Ying | Angela Chang x Xiao Zhan - Hacken Lee x Zhou Shen - Fei Yuqing x Ayanga
(Just for my own curiosity’s sake: Ayanga ‘87 | Yuning ‘87 | Zhan ‘91 | Shen ‘92 | Yiqiao ‘94)
9:03 - MC: I personally think there are two teams who have more pressure than the others. One of them is Fei Yuching x Ayanga- because they are a whole new group. The time they’ve had to work with each other is short. The other group is Na Ying x Xiao Zhan.  XZ: /nods/ MC: Because- in case. I’m saying IN CASE- you know what I’m saying right? XZ: /feeling the pressure/ MC: Na-jie still wants to come back, you know? Angela is only here as a lifesaver, the more important one is you. Will you let Na-jie come back? XZ: I.. definitely will!
9:48 - MC: The rounds have already been decided backstage. Would the person who picked #1 (first to go) please stand up. /Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning stand up/ - Backstage - 9:56 - RXQ: Xiao Yu, you tell me to stop and I’ll stop. LYN: Ok, 3-2-1, stop! (There’s only 2 envelopes left) ZS: I just hope you don’t pick #1. Thank you. XZ: !! Last time I picked the envelope and it was #1. It scared me to death. ZS: Your hands are better! AC: We have no choice now. XZ: It can’t be number 1 right? IT IS. But since Na-Zhan team won in popularity in the online voting, they are allowed to switch places with another team. AC: Alright then! Excuse us! AC: /stops in front of FYQ/ Xiao-ge… FYQ: … yes? AC: No, nothing. /moves on/ FYQ: Scared me to death… LYN: /avoiding all eye contact/ Hacken: Ok, come on. Take it. ZS: /WHAT??!/ AC: I don’t like the number 4. /takes 3/ RXQ&LYN: … :’) AC: It’s ok. I saw your outfits and I thought that you would have something really exciting. XZ: Suitable to start the show. RXQ: No problem.
11:37 - MC: What song have you brought for us today? LYN: “Ru Guo Yun Zhi Dao” RXQ: /to aYUNga/ Do you know? A: How do I not know??
Ren Xianqi x Liu Yuning - 如果雲知道 (Ru Guo Yun Zhi Dao (If The Clouds Know)) [I love (1) rock-ballad boy: Liu Yuning]
Zhou Huajian x Jiang Yiqiao - 孤枕难眠 (Gu Zhen Nan Mian (Sleepless)) (Yiqiao is sounding better and better every week!)
25:32 - MC: Let’s hear from someone- who do you want to hear? ZHJ: How about Xiao-ge? FYQ: […] This song is deeply representative of Huajian’s music. As soon as you hear his songs on the radio- the DJ doesn’t even need to introduce the song. You hear his unique voice, his years of music, even listening a hundred times, you won’t grow tired of his voice. Very good. ZHJ: Thank you, thank you. FYQ: I’m sure your points will be high as well. Just wait and see. MC: I know now the reason FYQ is sitting in the middle. After each of you sing, he knows how to elicit votes. “Your points will definitely be high.” FYQ: I’m sure. Everyone sounds good. ZHJ: He’s too good of a person. At the very end his points will be the highest.
26:54: ZHJ: I listened to Xiao-ge’s songs growing up. FYQ: /K.O/ This.. this IS true. I debuted way before him. When he debuted- his person, his voice- was just like a dark horse. ZHJ: Oh, no, no. My generation all did imitations of him. FYQ: Ah. – 27:35 - MC: Can you really imitate him? ZHJ: There was no helping it! At that time 8 out of 10 songs were his! MC: HJ-ge, the hardest thing is having the real thing here, and still performing. Xiao-ge. Could you please come and stand by ZHJ? ZHJ: I didn’t realize the situation would become this big. I was half joking. FYQ: I was able to see HJ a lot on shows back then. We would always find the time to joke around with him. We would always use his songs- /starts the impersonation/ ZHJ: When I released my own albums, I always said that one day I would have FYQ impersonate MY songs. When he does, that’s when you know you’ve made it. This was a real goal. I’m not kidding. FYQ: Thank you, thank you. ZHJ: I really learned a lot of his songs. MC: Right, so HJ-ge. Let’s be fair here. (FYQ sang ZHJ, so ZHJ HAS TO sing FYQ) FYQ: My songs might be a little difficult for him. ZHJ: At that time there was one song you HAD to sing. Everywhere you went, you heard this song. FYQ: Oh, alright. Let’s hear it. I was originally trying to give you a way out… ZHJ: No, no. I prepared for this! – ZHJ: And then when I sang my own songs after, I forgot to change back (to his original voice)
30:28 - MC: Now that we’ve heard from the senior, let’s hear from the junior. RXQ: I don’t dare critique him. Because we all consider HJ to be the Nation’s Song King. His songs really stir up people’s emotions and are very popular. Before, HJ would invite us juniors to open for him at his concerts. We all thought- since it’s his concert, let’s just sing however we want. We tried out a lot of different effects, atmospheres, and singing styles. He gave us a huge space for us to improve ourselves. So we are all very thankful to him.
Angela Chang x Xiao Zhan - Faded (remix) (HOLY SHIT!!!!)
33:31 - XZ: When I sang with Na-jie, we did more quiet, lyrical songs. I’ve always wanted to try something with some more stage presence and get people hyped up.  AC: Then let’s go for something explosive! XZ: Something that can get people jumping. Stand up! Don’t sit there. Move your left hand, your right hand- get moving!
34:07 - AC: Do you feel like we’re missing something? XZ: Yes! AC: The two of us will be very hyped up, yes, but- XZ: I know what we’re missing! A drink! [LOL, he needs to be drunk to get in the mood?]
37:00 - [LOL. Liu Yuning. SAME THO.]
40:39 - LYN: I thought it was amazing. I started rocking out. Really hyped up. Also AC’s high note was really amazing.  JYQ: I was totally entranced by the stage- immersed in Angela’s glamour, and XZ’s sexiness.  ZHJ: !! XZ: !! ?? /Me??? Sexy??/ MC: Did you discuss with ZHJ about the word “sexy”?  JYQ: What do you think, master? ZHJ: No, oh no. (Was not consulted on the use of the word “sexy”) But I have another feeling. Angela came and did what Na-jie could not.  XZ: /uh oh/ ZHJ: If Angela weren’t here- you wouldn’t have picked this song, or this type of performance. It was fun. When Na-jie comes back I won’t be used to it.
41:44 - MC: Angela- after you came I suddenly saw a different side of XZ. I had never before seen his ending pose like this before. His eyes were filled with a “killing” intent. My goodness. AC: The first time I came here I wasn’t too familiar with what sort of arrangement or music to consider. So this time, I wanted to make some changes, and I thought that XZ would resent me, but he said, “OK! We can try it out!” XZ: I’ve been waiting a long time for this. MC: !! Xiao Zhan. Are you SURE you’ve been “waiting a long time” for this? [hinting that xz has been unfulfilled with Na-jie] XZ: … Wait. What do you mean. There’s a problem with this sentence. I don’t know how to play this game of chess. MC: See. He’s filmed with me for a long time already. He knows how to maneuver around my comments. What I’m trying to say is.. your words.. there’s a possibility Na-jie could be listening. XZ: !! MC: AND! Singing with Na-jie, and singing with Angela… is there a difference? XZ: /mouthing nonsense, but not saying anything/ [LOL. GOOD CALL.] XZ: These words can get me in trouble, you know.
43:18 - MC: Did the English present any difficulty for you? XZ: Not really. :) MC: Did the DJ table present any difficulty? XZ: Oh, yes! Yes! That did. /xz practicing backstage, but making scary ghost sounds instead/
Hacken Lee x Zhou Shen - 那片海 (Na Pian Hai) (LOL at Hacken trying to get ShenShen to play sports. The acapella in the beginning of the song. The high notes. Transcendent.)
Fei Yuqing x Ayanga - 贝加尔湖畔 (Bei Jia Er Hu Pan)
Current Rankings: 1 - LKQ x ZS (two point difference between Ranks 1 and 2) 2 - FYQ x Ayanga 3 - AC x XZ 4 - RXQ x LYN (1 point difference from Rank 3) 5 - ZHJ x JYQ (2 point difference from Rank 4)

 Another fan radio drama.
In a nutshell: When Pro Players discover BL fics about themselves, their chatroom explodes.
This is not as epic as Chaos on Weibo. Just a lighthearted one on the topic of BL. Not really BL itself, though it’s hinting/joking about it. So if that’s not you cup of tea, you should now stop here.
None of the voices here appear in the donghua. And it’s not as well put together as others I’ve came across. But still quite funny in its own way. Especially the songs.
Did I mention the songs? XD I swear the ED is the whole reason why I am even linking and translating this radio drama in the first place. If I have to go through that, everyone has to go through that!
Translation after the break. Enjoy~~

 I give up I quit
So tiring just to play Glory
The fuck I put in effort to enter World Champ, what for
It’s the end, Owatta,
Might as well GG
Wasted my new keyboard, changed my card
I am going home
It’s not like I was without pressure before the match
Digging up all the (competition) videos to study
Of all the ones out there, I’d find Blue Rain
And now my vison has dropped
Team Captain is handicapped yet he still plays
Tactics and strategies are his true strength
But there’s no point saying that now
You have to know, that there’s three more people
Even more beautifully cruel
The Cleric is able to fight one on one like a Berserker
No need for healing and a bunch of speech bubbles as cover
And a Classless as reserve filled with cheating hacks
Look at myself what am I playing
My results are all trash
Might as well GG
I give up I quit playing
A bunch of BUG is too scary
The fuck Qigong Brawler and girls fiercer than guys
I am dead, no more health
I give up completely I quit
What’s the point of competing when I am killed before completing my moves
I give up I quit
Tortured everyday, it’s so tiring
The fuck I put in effort
What the hell is that Classless?!!
It’s the end, the team annihilated
Quickly pack and go back home
Wh-at~ the~ fuck!

My Thoughts: “Quan Zhi Gao Shou” Episode 9 Summary and Review: “Everyone’s Public Enemy”
Tumblr media
Excited greetings to you, my fellow QZGS fans, here is another edition of “My Thoughts!” This episode has a lot of reshuffling of events when compared to the novel so I'll try to point them out to you. I was actually genuinely surprised at a few things which I will discuss later. (BTW, I translated the title myself so it could be wrong...)
As with always, a warning about spoilers ahead! As an FYI, the start of the episode has us around chapter 148 and ends around chapter 178, (give or take) since some of the chapters were completely cut out from this episode (or are, in fact, going to be shown in episode 10).
Tumblr media
The episode starts us off with some totally unnecessary fan service (I'm joking, it's TOTALLY necessary for all the screaming fangirls lol!) of Zhou Zekai’s dreamy visage before cutting to the Internet cafe where Ye Xiu is talking to Wang Jiexi about how the constant challenges from Tiny Herb are wearing him down. Tang Rou disagrees with him, saying that he's just playing around with a bunch of champion “three-legged cats” (in Chinese, a “three-legged cat” means that you're a “jack-of-all-trades and master of none”). At this point, Bao pops his face in and asks about what they're going to do in-game today. Just as this happens, Ye Xiu gets a PM from Seven Fields…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We cut over to Congee City’s Exchange Market where Bound Boat from Blue Brook Guild is talking to Blue River about Lord Grim setting the record for Desolate Land for the Full Moon Guild for the cheap price of four parts of the Scarlet Moon set (a level 30 set for Battle Mages). Blue River reacts to this with disbelief but it's all true. His QQ messenger lights up and he watches as leaders from some of the other big guilds complain about this. When the server announces later on that the Full Moon Guild has beaten Blue Brook’s record, the other guilds begin to declare: this Lord Grim is our enemy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left with no other choice, Blue River has to make a tough decision: ask for help from a higher dimension...
Meanwhile, Lord Grim and Co. are in Congee City as well, picking up new weapons for themselves now that they're at level 30. In the novel, this event actually happens before setting the record for Full Moon. Steam Bun dashes from one stall to another in excitement while Tang Rou wonders out loud about the steep prices. Lord Grim goes up to a stall and asks if they're buying uncommon materials. The man gives him the affirmative as he turns around and...ah! It's Bound Boat from Blue Brook! Why are you selling back the materials we gave you!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Blue River has arrived in the Heavenly Domain on his main account, Blue Bridge Spring Snow. I have to admit, the detailing and almost divinely-inspired instrumental for this scene is totally on point and totally gorgeous! Also, if you pay close attention, Blue River’s main account has a ponytail! Not QUITE the long hair I was imagining though!
Tumblr media
We finally get to meet two characters I was actually not expecting to see: guild leader of the Heavenly Domain for Blue Brook, Changing Spring, and Poplar Beach, Blue River’s biggest rival in Blue Brook. To be honest, with all the stuff the donghua was cutting out, seeing these two characters was last on my list. I am a bit disappointed on the totally bland character designs for these two though.
Blue River informs Changing Spring about Lord Grim’s efforts in the 10th server while Poplar Beach scoffs in the background. Changing Spring decides that it's time to bring out the big guns: he will personally go to the 10th server to set the record for Desolate Land! Blue River goes to inform Bound Boat but, instead, he gets a complaint about Lord Grim’s shameless bargaining techniques! And, somewhere in the shadows, danger lurks…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lord Grim and Co. group back at Desolate Land after getting some new weapons. Steam Bun detects a killer intent and dashes away to ambush the person. But, it turns out that the newcomer is not an enemy but a friend!
Tumblr media
It's my favourite cinnamon roll, Qiao Yifan! He's come to the 10th server on his new level 30 Ghostblade account, One Inch Ash, to get some God-level training from Ye Qiu (Ye Xiu). Steam Bun is confused: was I wrong about that killer intent I felt? Lord Grim smirks: you're not wrong, it's right above you!
Tumblr media
Looks like they've been surrounded! And, judging from the Battle Mage who attacks first, it looks like it's Chen Yehui, guild leader of Excellent Dynasty! A battle ensues and we finally get a bit of action! I was starting to despair a bit about the lack of action. The novel covers a lot of battle scenes, including lots of monster battles from Wild Bosses to dungeoning for records. The donghua, unfortunately, cuts out a lot of this, probably due to budget and animating concerns. On top of that, a lot of the battles in the donghua have become what I call “dust covered light shows:” all you see is dust and flashy lights.
Another FYI: this particular “encirclement” actually occurs before the record setting of Desolate Land and before Blue River goes to the Heavenly Domain to ask for help. For more information, please check out chapter 155-56.
Secondly, the members on Ye Xiu’s side actually included Seven Fields and Sleeping Moon (from the Full Moon guild) and Thousand Creations (from Blue Brook); Yifan’s character One Inch Ash hadn't even joined up with Lord Grim’s party yet as his level wasn't high enough. I believe the reason that Yifan and his Ghostblade appeared earlier than expected was because they had to make up for the fact that they wouldn't be animating the record setting of Desolate Land that included Yifan helping them. Lastly, this “encirclement” actually occurred in Line Canyon (the dungeon after Desolate Land), not in Desolate Land itself, which is what happened in this episode.
Anyways, getting back to the episode at hand, the members of Excellent Dynasty attack and we can all see the merits of having a supporting Ghostblade member on the team with the usage of Sword Souls (and Dual Linking Ghost Boundaries) buffing up the team. I have to admit, it's all very flashy! I love the action sequence for Lord Grim’s Sword Soul and how his umbrella splits apart into a sword and sheath. Ye Xiu praises Yifan on his timing for his Boundaries and Yifan just lights up at the compliment. You can truly see the way Yifan works so perfectly with the team, and how happy he is to just be a part of it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ambushers are finally defeated in a team wipeout and Lord Grim and Co. pose majestically at the end of it. (Insert some more shameless Yifan plug in lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suddenly, another attacker comes from above! It's Poplar Beach! He arrogantly introduces himself before attacking Steam Bun. Lord Grim and Changing Spring intervene and more introductions are made. Lord Grim makes a comment on the new record set by Blue Brook for Desolate Land: how come I don't see Blue River up there? His dungeoning is much more stable and consistent than Poplar Beach who would excel more at PKs. (Another small note: in the novel, this conversation actually happens before they set the record and Blue River is not on scene when it happens) Poplar Beach becomes incensed at the insinuation that he's bad at dungeoning while Blue River is visibly touched by Lord Grim’s words (his face has the most beautiful show of emotion I've ever seen on him!). Poplar Beach starts to arrogantly challenge Lord Grim in the world chat. Ye Xiu smirks at this while Blue River and Bound Boat worriedly look on…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At Excellent Era, Chen Yehui (FINALLY we get official confirmation that he IS Chen Yehui!) is grinding his teeth in anger after his failed attempt to kill Ye Qiu (Ye Xiu) in-game. We get a flashback of him getting denounced for having inefficient skill to play a higher position in the team, on the recommendation of Ye Qiu (Ye Xiu). It looks like he's not through with him yet though, as Chen slowly scrolls through his friend list filled with members from other guilds…
Tumblr media
Yifan, on the other hand, is talking to Ye Xiu about the high record for Desolate Land. Ye Xiu tells him that he's confident that they'll be able to set the record with Yifan and his Ghostblade’s help. All they need are three chances (since after this, Lord Grim and Co. would reach level 31 and they would not be able to set the record anymore). Yifan panickedly tells him that he's still not very adept at using a Ghostblade but Ye Xiu reassures him: you're a pro player too! These words, spoken to him by a God-level player, is enough to convince Yifan: three chances are more than enough! And, as expected, the record is set!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I get so many feels from this every time I see it: Yifan needs this kind of acknowledgement of his skills more often. He feels overlooked because of his friend Yingjie so every time he gains a little bit more confidence in himself, I just get all teary-eyed and emotional.
After setting the record, Chen Guo congratulates them. Ye Xiu wanders over and asks Chen Guo something: can I borrow your Heavenly Domain maxed leveled account, Chasing Haze? And, at Blue Rain headquarters, we watch as the IRL version of Changing Spring (Liang Yichun for anyone who's interested) approaches Huang Shaotian while looking for Yu Wenzhou…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eeee, Yu Wenzhou! Another hottie appears, like a rare Pokemon! (Although, the chances of meeting a hot guy in this series seems pretty high lol!) Glad to see Shaotian again, I miss that adorable chatterbox! I can't wait to see more of them in the next episode! And what does the next episode bring?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oho! I wasn't expecting the donghua to cover the battle between Poplar Beach and Chasing Haze (played by Ye Xiu). To be honest, I thought that they would cut it out completely (it only lasted two chapters in the novel). And a covered up Su Mucheng? Wasn't this scene chronologically supposed to happen a bit earlier (like in THIS episode)? Well, we didn't see much of her in this episode so I guess it's all right. And that turbaned fellow, he couldn't possibly be Concealed Light, right? Goodness what is with the pacing of the donghua? It's all over the place! I guess all we can do now is wait and see! Until next week!

This is probably going to be the last Jackie Chan Adventures High School AU in a sequence like this. After that, if any ideas come up I’ll just post it.
Behold, Jackie Chan Adventures Part VI!
J-Team Members at the end of the school year:
Jun ‘Charlie’ Zhou, 9th grade, 14 years
Rocko Elio Baranello, 9th grade, 14 years
Yu ‘Jade’ Chan, 10th grade, 15 years
Paco Fernando Tejedor, 10th grade, 15 years
Frank Maghnus, 11th grade, 16 years
Jackie Chan, 12th grade, 17 years
Esther ‘Viper’ Levi, 12th grade, 18 years old
Tohru Yamamoto, 12th grade, 19 years
Eduardo ‘El Toro’ Diego Tejedor, 12th grade, 19 years
Zi ‘Drago’ Long Huo, 12th grade, 19 years
When Drago gets home, he wants to ignore what Jackie had told him but found that he couldn’t. No matter how much Drago would refuse to listen to Jackie’s advice, he found that Jackie was right, and if he didn’t change soon it would be too late to fix anything. When Drago comes back to school on Monday, he finds that it’s easier to say something than to actually get it done.
It takes Drago the rest of the school year to bend his back backwards and every which way to get the approval of Jackie, then later the J-Team. It was everything from public school humiliation, extra work given by the Principal and Vice Principal and pretty much being treated like a servant by each member of the J-Team. It’s gotten to certain points where Drago really wanted to go back to being the mean asshat he was before, but someone was always there watching him to make sure he’s doing the right thing.
Viper, Jackie and Jade were the last people to fully trust Drago mostly bitter Viper and Jade. They desperately wanted to put Viper’s pet snake in Drago’s bag, but Jackie had to restrain the girls from doing so.
For a while, Drago’s friendship journey made his other “friends”, the Ice Crew, angry but Drago had learned to ignore them over time. They hadn’t really done Drago any favors to begin with.
Drago loves bad puns and cheesy, annoying jokes. Of course it’s irritates everyone, but that was one of Drago’s pieces of childhood that made him happy, so the bad habit stuck to him.
There’s a thing at 13 High that most students and faculty refer to as an ‘Incident’, or ‘The Day... ’.‘The Chicken Noodle Soup Incident’, ‘The Day Jackie Beat Drago’, ‘The Viper Incident’, ‘The Day of the Museum Field Trip’, ‘The Senior Prank Incident’. A lot goes on at this school, so the easiest way to remember them all is by properly labeling them so people don’t get confused.
Now the Field Trip one I want to explain. The J-Team and their World History/Geography class go to the San Francisco Natural History Museum for a whole day. The class is a pretty big class, so Mr. Kasahara organizes everyone into buddy systems to take notes on what they see. Jackie + Drago, Charlie + Frank, Paco + Viper, El Toro + Jade, Tohru + Rocko. According to Mr. Origami, if anyone causes any sort of trouble, they will be held responsible.
Drago is “too cool” for Jackie, so he goes off on his own. Jackie has to go find him and ends up deep into the museum for him to find his way back. When Drago finds the opportunity, he locks Jackie in the janitor’s closet and runs away to do his work. Luckily for Jade + Rocko, they learned how to get through the museum as they were looking for the bathroom. It took around 10 minutes to get Jackie from the janitor’s closet, which costed the three of them 10 points from their assignment.thanks a fuckin lot Drago
Jackie has a very good memory and is very observant. On the first couple of days in school, he was able to remember all of everyone names he’s encountered. It helps him with his studies and of course, helping people in the school when they have trouble with memory.
Jackie’s had more than one encounter of waking up on a Saturday for school. This lead to a couple of Jade’s pranks to which Jackie disliked.
All the teacher work days, extra holidays, Spring Break and Winter Break confuse Jackie, as he didn’t have too many of them in China.
Jackie’s hair goes down a little bit past his shoulders. He takes very good care of his hair, which is probably why everyone has their hands in it constantly. Not that it bothers Jackie, since Uncle used to have to tie his nephew’s hair up a lot. Sometimes, if Jackie gets lazy, Jade offers to do Jackie’s hair in the morning, which results to many interesting hairstyles.
Jackie was okay with school lunch at the beginning of the year until he ended up getting sick from eating a not-so-well-cooked chicken sandwich. This resulted in Jackie having to stay home for a week with a bad case of the stomach virus. After that incident, Jackie takes food to school and if there’s a case where he has to eat school food, he’s very cautious of it. to be fair Jade and Frank warned him and he chose not to listen
Over the school year, Jade takes many, many pictures of Jackie and the J-Team. At first, Jackie is a little uncomfortable and slightly bothered by the constant clicking of the camera, but then he begins to not mind.
The reason why Jade is doing so is to take all the pictures and turn them into a slideshow to show Jackie and the school, since the school can’t seem to get enough of Jackie. At first, Principal Black and V.P Hartman aren’t okay with Jade constantly having her phone out but after she told them her plan, they were fine with it also.
The weekend before graduation, 13 High’s tradition is to do a Senior Picnic day, where all the seniors can choose not to come to school and hang out in the park for a day of fun. El Toro, Tohru, Viper and Jackie show up, but Drago decides not to show. The J-Team seniors are a little concerned for Drago and they all call him, but his phone doesn’t answer.
Graduation is coming up, and Jackie is a little bummed because he wants Uncle to see it. Sadly, he doesn’t have enough money to buy Uncle a plane ticket as he had used it for other generous things. He would ask his uncle and aunt, but he doesn’t want to bother them with something that wouldn’t matter. But Jade knows her cousin enough to see that he wishes his uncle was here, so she asks her parents instead and they are delighted to. The money is sent to Uncle and when he finds that the nephew he’s raised is going to graduate, he gets his best formal clothes and quickly arrives to the U.S. ASAP.
On graduation day, Jackie, Jade, her parents and the J-Team are of course very emotional. The only people who know about Jackie’s surprise are Jade and her parents, as the rest of the J-Team know nothing. When Jackie’s name is called for his diploma, he looks out into the crowd and sees his friends, family and Uncle? There on stage he freezes up, unable to move. It had been so long since Jackie was away from his uncle that happy tears fall from his face as he runs down from the stage to give his uncle the biggest embrace he could.
Jackie’s reunite with Uncle is pretty happy, which makes a lot of people cry. V.P. Hartman is wiping her eyes, Capt. Black is blowing his nose, Aunt Mei and Uncle Shen are trying hard to keep their tears suppressed. Drago himself has a tear, claiming it’s just ‘sweat going into his eyes’.
When Drago’s name is called up on stage, he notices a familiar shadow into the large crowd of people. After the graduation is over, he goes by himself to find that shadow to see that it’s his Uncle Seymour. Whether Drago likes to admit it or not, he’s actually quite close to his Uncle Seymour.
“Unc? What’re you doing here?”
“I was let out for good behavior. As for your dad... euh, it’s weird. He said he wants to talk to you. He’s at your house waiting for you,” Seymour explains.
“Why would I want to see that deadbeat?”
“He said it’s urgent.”
Seymour drives Drago home as fast as he can and there Mr. Huo is, playing with Henri. He tells Drago to sit down and begins to actually talk to him. Even though Mr. Huo is speaking in a somewhat harsh tone, this would be one of the first civil conversations Drago would have with his father in who-remembers-how-long. what they talk about is something i’m not even sure of
The day after graduation Jackie is packing up his bags in his room, ready to go back to China. Aunt Mei and Uncle Chen catch him. Jackie prepares to formally say goodbye to them, but they aren’t dressed to go anywhere. Aunt Mei tells Jackie that Capt. Black had called and said that he got a full ride scholarship to the San Francisco State University told you jackie’s smart. Jackie is skeptical about this because he’ll feel guilty about not being able to take care of Uncle.
“Oh nephew! What’s the point of taking care of Uncle in China if Uncle’s coming to America?” - Aunt Mei

Morre Jin Yong, com quase 100 anos e ao mesmo tempo imortal
Tumblr media
Faleceu ontem o autor chinês Jin Yong, cuja trilogia mais famosa ocupou a minha imaginação durante a primeira metade deste ano.
Em vez de ficar falando sobre alguém que eu nem conheço bem, vou apenas colar aqui as citações que copiei da sua trilogia (muito divertida e enriquecedora pra minha vida), pra que você possa conhecer um pouco sobre ele também:
officials and generals are becoming their servants
==========
"We priests are supposed to be merciful and benevolent in our hearts and actions. But then we see a bunch of traitors and enemies that do nothing but add to the suffering of our people, and I could never be merciful nor benevolent."
==========
The Book of Odes is also known as the Book of Songs (Shi Jing in Chinese), one of the Five Classics. The Four Books and Five Classics were the standard texts that all scholars studied back in the day. The other four Classics are the Book of Changes (Yi Jing) - this one features a lot in the wuxia genre, Book of History (Shu Jing), Book of Rites (Li Ji) and the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chun Qiu). The Four Books are the Great Learning (Da Xue), the Doctrine of Mean (Zhong Yong), the Analects of Confucius (Lun Yu) and Minces (Meng Zi).
==========
He was like someone riding on a tiger’s back. He could not continue riding, but it was difficult to get off safely.
==========
“Your apprentice brother scolded right. I am a heretic weirdo. Who doesn’t know about Eastern Heretic Huang Yaoshi, the owner of Peach Blossom Island? The thing Old Heretic Huang hates most this life is rules and conventions, especially saints and whatnots. These are just things to cheat dumb people. It’s such a joke that people have been blindly abiding to these rules and conventions for generations! I, Huang Yaoshi don’t believe in these nonsensical teachings. Everyone say I’m heretic, humph! At least a heretic is better than those jerks who talk about morals and principals but caused the deaths of so many!”
==========
“Earth and heaven Are a stove, Nature is the worker! Yin and Yang are As charcoal, Thousand things are copper!”
==========
Didn’t the emperors eat without plowing? Wearing clothes without weaving? Going out and coming in to the palace in a carriage? Are these not the common people’s blood and sweat? When the emperors reached their advance years their own hearts convicted them of all their merit and guilt; always enjoying the toil of the people while contributing only a few, how they have committed a multitude of sin while performing their office duty.
==========
all eight battle formations: ‘tian fu’ [high as the sky], ‘di zai’ [strong as the earth], ‘feng yang’ [scattered like a wind], ‘yun chui’ [dangling like a cloud] , ‘long fei’ [flying dragon], ‘hu yi’ [winged tiger], ‘niao xiang’ [soaring bird], and ‘she pan’ [coiling snake]; which they have mastered skillfully.
==========
As long as you live with an upright heart and keep your honor clean; then your life won’t be in vain. If other people treat us badly, we don’t need to repay their wickedness.
==========
Along the way two people saw the white bones that were scattered among the tall grass of the prairie; they could not refrain from lamenting incessantly; both were thinking that the two of them loved each other, they would live harmoniously, they did not have any regrets; yet the common people’s misery was deep; they did not know the day peace and prosperity would reign on earth.
==========
Of all the things to be born with, you were born with the love of saying negative things.
==========

These three were good friends and bound themselves in an oath, to face fortune and adversity together, and not to forget each other in riches and honor. Later on because of his accomplishment, Nizam-al-Mulk became Vizier to the Seljukid Empire. His two old friends came to seek shelter. Nizam entreated the Shah, and Hassan was granted an official position. Omar was not willing to be a government official; he only asked for annual provision so that he could research and study astronomy, almanac and mathematics, also to drink wine and write poems in peace. Nizam generously granted each of his friends’ requests. Unexpectedly, Hassan was ambitious; he was unwilling to be someone else’s subordinate for long and thus staged a rebellion. His attempt was foiled and he fled to a mountain. Later on he became the chief of a sect whose prestige shook the world. This sect specifically took murder as their service, and was called the Hashhashin Sect. I’m not really a big fan of C-dramas or Meteor Garden, but who will forget this phenomenal drama that started from a Japanese manga until it became a TV series that probably has the most remakes? Taiwanese, Korean, Indonesian, and now a Chinese remake!
The Meteor Garden fever has surely converted people of all ages into fans, not just of the drama but the fictional popular quartet F4! Who would forget Dao Ming Si, Hua Ze Lei, Mei Zuo, and Xi Men? The original boys brought us wonderful songs that most 90-ish kids would still remember and sing along to, which would definitely lead us back to memories of the Taiwanese version’s immense popularity.
At that time, I remember myself still being a kid, who willingly followed her older sister’s every whim and recorded every single episode on a tape recorder for her. Those were the dark times that I totally got sick of being in front of the television and the drama, but gladly Vic Zhou was there to grace me with his presence. I so loved Hua Ze Lei as a kid. He was my ultimate crush, that was probably why I started crushing on Yoon Jihoo as soon as the Korean remake took over a few years later.
More than that blast from the past feeling though, the hottest topic this 2018 is the comeback the drama is making through the Chinese remake, starring this generation’s most beautiful faces, Shen Yue (Dong Shan Cai), Dylan Wang (Dao Ming Si), Darren Chen (Hua Ze Lei), Connor Leong (Feng Mei Zuo) and Caesar Wu (Xi Men Yan).
Shen Yue feels very familiar to me after her ‘A Love So Beautiful’ drama aired in my country and boosted in popularity. The boys, however, are all new faces to me but I must say the moment I saw them I really felt good to see that they are taking over the F4 role. Maybe because they all just look so handsome and charming that their face value already makes the cut.
Anyway, I’ve been rambling about the randomest things, but that’s just because I feel excited to talk about the 2018 version after just watching it. I’m up to episode 6 of the drama, so I shall share my first impression about what happened from the beginning to that point.
Here goes nothing!
Catchy Start
What caught my attention when I started episode 1 is how it opened the story with Shan Cai asking ‘Have you ever wondered what will happen to you in the future?’ and concluding how her 18 year old self never thought something like that will happen to her while a scene of her throwing a strong flying kick to Dao Ming Si’s face plays in slow motion.
I think that, that flying kick on the face totally brings a huge head start to the drama, causing for curiosity to uproot as they left what happened a mystery and began the generic introduction of characters. Shan Cai being the ordinary girl who will luckily land the role of heroine in one hell of a rollercoaster ride. And there was also–lo and behold–the notorious F4, who seems even more perfectly described in this version (a really much improved background than their earlier versions!) that it is too good to be true. To fictitious, to say.
Nonetheless, the start of the drama really managed to grab my attention, so I’m giving them a perfect score for that.
Same but Different
So, we get the same thing but maybe with a Chinese twist to it? I’m not sure whether it’s because they want it to be different from its past versions, but this one definitely has a very unique taste to it.
They changed a lot of things like:
Shan Cai’s family background – The original Meteor Garden and even Boys Over Flowers portrayed her as someone coming from a poor family that barely made a living. Here, Shan Cai at least came from an average family with a mom that cooks and gets money from delivering takeouts and has a father that works as a bank manager (I think they said that was his job).
In the previous versions too, her parents look really pathetic to me. I mean, the father and mother were both selling off their daughter to Dao Ming Si / Gu Jun Pyo. But at least, the mother in the Chinese version is not that loud and annoying and although she still dotes on Dao Ming Si so much that she can sell Shan Cai out to him, at least, her father is there to become the buffer that stops her antics.
An even more perfect F4 – If that’s even possible! So, I know it’s kind of cliche now that the poor girl falls in love with the rich guy. It’s a common trope among dramas, but of course we don’t get tired of the rich and handsome guys of F4! As in never get tired of them!
And to make it much better–or worse? but that’s up to you–the drama made these four flower boys even more desirable bachelors. You’ll easily know about how different and better they are right from the first episode when a random Junior walks up to Shan Cai, Qing He and Li Zhen and tells them about the popular F4.
Dao Ming Si may be the forever pineapple haired guy (his hairstyle gets even better too!), but he’s now finally equipped with the knowledge of being able to speak three or four languages and a talent for business. The old Dao Ming Si can’t even get a quote right, which was really funny back then. He was handsome and rich, but not so smart. But now he can just be everything, well except for the short temper and his anger management problems plus obsession for Shan Cai.
Hua Ze Lei used to be just quiet and snobbish like a cold prince in the older versions, but this drama made it so that they could explain his introverted behavior as related from the slight autism he had when he was a kid and is supposedly cured by the great Teng Tang Jing. Can you even cure autism? I made my own research and gladly they said a minority portion of those people with autism get cured depending on the severity of their autism and the therapies they go through over the years, but its still debatable. However, giving this drama the benefit of the doubt, this is fiction. I’m not gotta criticize it for not knowing any better. For sure, they know what they are doing.
Mei Zuo and Xi Men – so they’re like the third in command in all the versions if you ask me. I’m pretty sure, in terms of appearance, they are of equal importance. Two obnoxious, overprotective friends with a tendency to womanize. I see women hanging around them everywhere, but that’s their role. It’s the casanovas that are more interesting to watch. However, like I said they are the ‘much improved’ versions: wherein Mei Zuo has an impeccable memory that they can never lose in the card game ‘Bridge’ and Xi Men has a liking for tea, due to his family background.
I’m not sure if this is going to sound nicer and may help them look smarter, but I think this version of F4 is the milder, much civilized guys. I mean, they don’t bully someone so randomly out of the blue and make their lives a living hell. Instead, as it was explained, they are so good at the card game ‘Bridge’ (that they even have a club for that!) that many people want to challenge them and to stop anyone from just randomly challenging them, they set an odd rule that you need to first receive the ‘Joker’ card as an invitation for a Bridge match.
That doesn’t sound like much what would bad boys do, right? It would have been nicer if they stuck to the original, but I guess this isn’t so bad either. At least, if they challenge somebody it would make much more sense. Plus, they look really cool playing that game.
Hello ‘Joker’! – So, bye bye to that red card that Dao Ming Si used to send his victims and say ‘hello’ to the less threatening ‘Joker’ card in your locker. Prepare to lose in the game of Bridge with F4 and eat some slippers as the consequence!
At least, it’s befitting for them to use the card, though, right?
College and Milk Tea – I get it every version of Shan Cai is different that’s why she’s a freshman in the Nutrition course here and she works part time at a milk tea shop called ‘Talented’ with Xiao Yu.
Fights and Reconciliations – Well, I remember Li Zhen–Shan Cai’s newfound friend–also liking Dao Ming Si in the past and because she’s jealous of Shan Cai she intentionally sets her up so that she looks like she slept with someone she met at a club.
The same friend betrays her in this version, but her reason is sort of different and somehow ‘coincidental’ and Shan Cai ends up forgiving her because she’s just that kind of person and Dao Ming Si can never have a say about it or kick her out of university since he doesn’t own it. But at least, all is well. And to be honest, I like how things ended up well between these two friends in this version, since the problem arose from something trivial and it’s just unreasonable for someone to drop out because they were being bullied for some petty reason, right?
Meteor Garden 2018 gets you hooked by these positive changes and makes the drama a bit lighter than its older versions that are leaning more on its dramatic quotient.
However, on another note, I must admit that Shan Cai didn’t experience as much hardship as the old Shan Cai did. Dao Ming Si bullies her in the most childish sense, plotting childish jokes that you can’t call disturbing. I guess, because he’s been sheltered for long enough and didn’t grow up dating girls left and right, that he is having a hard time expressing himself to her and with his very impatient personality makes him extremely possessive of her.
The lack of emotional turmoil boxes the potential of each of them to do even better in portraying their role, however.
So, in a nutshell, Meteor Garden looks totally brand new with the many additions, but still has more room to improve with the acting. Not saying, they aren’t good, but there got to be something more with that actor or actress. So, I’m looking forward to improvement until it’s 48th episode!
Fast Pacing
Is it just me or this drama is moving too quickly that I’m getting worried what more will they show in the next 44 to 48 episodes?
Not that I am complaining about the quick pacing, it’s just that maybe I am not used to it. The Taiwanese version really had a slow, agonizing pace that I would not really stick to it until the end if I had to do a marathon, while this one was just like leafing through pages in a book while only skimming it very briefly, which I think is good but pretty worrisome. Not unless they have more to show that won’t be dragging and not just a filler, then I guess the pacing should be fine.
Total Flower Boys
I can definitely say that this version totally left me drooling at the boys. All of them are really good looking you can’t say they’re a waste. They do have their different charms that set them apart from each other, but in total all of them are likable eye-candies!
I used to be a solid Hua Ze Lei kind of girl, but after watching Dylan Wang portray Dao Ming Si, I can’t help but fawn over the boy. He just fits the prickly, childish and short-tempered rich boy role that’s not too rough but not kind looking either. At some points, he’s cute and surprisingly I don’t despise him for childishly annoying Shan Cai.
The Strong-willed Wild Flower that often bends
You can say that Shan Cai is that heroine who doesn’t easily back down from a challenge. She’s always been stubborn and antagonizing, especially towards Dao Ming Si. She’s been consistent in this love-hate relationship they have that sometimes it’s hard to believe how they ended up together.
But I must say I sometimes feel anxious about Shen Yue’s version of Shan Cai. She’s a good actress and its nice she can easily tear up when an emotional scene comes up, but why do I feel like this Shan Cai is being more fickle now than before? She’s fickle that I find it annoying she lets Dao Ming Si kiss her without a fight even when she likes Hua Ze Lei. I think she sounds more like a pushover or a very easy person, especially when she lets Hua Ze Lei kiss her after just seeing him kiss another girl without any second thoughts and while bringing her along with him at the beach.
A Real Douche
Excuse me for my opinion, but now that I’ve watched this version, I can’t help but think Hua Ze Lei is the real douche here and not Dao Ming Si, who did nothing but devotedly love Dong Shan Cai, I mean, Lei may appear like a cool guy because he’s quiet and introverted and he doesn’t look like he can play any tricks at girls, but the thing is he keeps stringing Shan Cai along–even kissing her cheek without any proper reason and even if he didn’t like her back then when he did it–even if he likes Jing. He even follows her to Paris and lives with her, but just because she doesn’t make time for him and he’s not man enough to be able to save their relationship, that he leaves and shakes up Dao Ming Si and Shan Cai’s blossoming love-hate relationship.
Well, I’m not saying he’s bad, but still for sure no one wants to be the second option when it comes to the person you like. No matter what, a girl needs to have some self-respect and can’t treat herself unjustly by having false hopes that one day this stupid guy will look at you. And Lei shouldn’t be that guy that gives her false hopes just because he knew she likes her and then only goes back to her after realizing Jing doesn’t need him. That’s just plain stupid. Like seriously. I’d rather pick the person who genuinely likes me more and not the person who will only give me the second place. You won’t be truly happy with someone who only puts you second in his life.
Romance
It’s still so complicated like before that it’s unbelievable. I can’t say that there will be such romance in reality, but nonetheless, I totally feel like the chemistry between Dylan Wang and Shen Yue is like second nature to them that you may find them rather unarguably cute together and suited for each other. Together, they make my heart really flutter like a teenager and grin like an idiot nonstop.
Over all
Surprisingly, I think I am being won over by this drama to another level after watching its first few episodes. Of course, I  had  my own doubts upon hearing another remake is on its way, but with some leap of faith that it wouldn’t just be some cheap drama remake, I think that it’s worth the wait and the time I invested on watching it.
I can’t say that it surpassed the other versions, because they all have their different charms. But I can probably say that Meteor Garden 2018 managed to surpass itself.  With its impeccable cast and the awesome production and directing, it surpassed expectations of most Meteor Garden fans.
Plus, add the fact that its very lighthearted in its element compared to the past versions and really much cuter that it must attract, too, the younger audience.
I will not dwell with the fact, though, that it’s pretty long for 40+ episodes times 40 minutes worth of TV viewing per episode and will just enjoy the flow of things while it can entertain me so I wouldn’t overthink about its length being a disadvantage at this time. Maybe they can use it to their advantage too, but who knows? Only time will tell.
Nonetheless, I will recommend this to anybody who just simply loves Meteor Garden at any day. You should try it if you’re up for another Meteor Garden fever and be charmed by the eternal F4!
I will rate this drama 4.7 out of 5 for surprising me and getting me hooked!
See you later for my On going and Final review for this drama in the future!
First Impression: Meteor Garden (2018) I'm not really a big fan of C-dramas or Meteor Garden, but who will forget this phenomenal drama that started from a Japanese manga until it became a TV series that probably has the most remakes?

Designers spill secrets of Olympic figure skating outfits
Designers says there’s a whole lot of rules to what Olympians can wear on and off the ice.
 (Reuters)
This past Tuesday, US figure skater Mirai Nagasu made history. So did a woman named Pat Pearsall.
You might already be familiar with Nagasu: The American skater’s unprecedented triple axel — and fist-pumping, whooping celebration — earned her a top trending spot on Twitter that night. Everyone cheered for the 24-year-old in the ruby-red dress.

As for Pearsall? Well, she’s the designer to thank for that now-famous costume — and, in a tiny way, for making sure Nagasu nailed that momentous jump.
OLYMPIAN CHLOE KIM JOKES THAT SHE DIDN’T CRY AFTER WINNING GOLD BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO PRESERVE EYELINER
“With a triple axel in her program, Mirai didn’t want anything weighing her down,” Pearsall tells The Post. “Every stone on a dress, every drop of glue adds up.” So Pearsall, who modeled the look after Halle Berry’s slinky scarlet gown in the James Bond movie “Die Another Day,” exercised some serious sparkle restraint. Whereas a standard skate dress may boast some 5,000 crystals (usually Swarovski), Nagasu’s shimmers with a modest 2,200-ish.
In figure skating, the right costume can make or break a performance. A wardrobe malfunction can trigger a fall or make executing certain jumps and spins difficult, while a dazzling, well-engineered ensemble supports even the trickiest move — and can turn an athlete into an icon.
“The last thing you ever want to do as a designer is do anything to the dress that would affect the skate,” says Pearsall, who’s dressed top toe-pickers for 20 years.
SOME TEAM USA WOMEN SAY THEY’D COMPETE IN #METOO BLACK AT OLYMPICS
Min Yu-ra and Alexander Gamelin of South Korea compete in a performance in which her top nearly came off.
 (Reuters)
She was horrified when South Korean skater Yura Min almost found herself topless on television during last week’s team skate, after a hook came undone. “When I’m doing closures on a dress, I sew and knot, sew and knot, sew and knot,” Pearsall says. “It’s redundant, but you have to go overboard. I mean, that thing’s not coming off.”
Cloth, too, must be chosen wisely, to allow skaters a full range of motion. “I work with all stretch fabrics, with Lycra in them,” Gail Johnson, who designed Olympian Bradie Tennell’s dresses, tells The Post. They provide the best mobility, and they’re “durable,” she explains. Meanwhile, Lisa McKinnon, whose Olympic-athlete clients include Vincent Zhou, pairs skaters Chris and Alexa Knierim and the ice-dancing Shibutani siblings, is open to nonstretch fabrics — but only if they’re used in the right way.
Fan favorites Maia and Alex Shibutani are a sibling act.
 (Reuters)
“I chose chiffon for [Maia Shibutani’s] short-program skirt because it gives a nice, full look,” which was ideal for their lively Latin-dance number, “but it’s not heavy,” she tells The Post. “She can’t have it swinging her around while she does her twizzles.”
There’s also a dress code to consider. The International Skating Union, one of the sport’s most important governing bodies, sets the terms for Olympic costumes. The rules have changed over time — for example, in 2006, women were granted the right to forgo traditional dresses for trousers and skirtless unitards — but the guiding mandate is that athletes look “modest, dignified and appropriate.”

Essentially, Pearsall says, judges are concerned about skaters looking “too naked” on the ice. (“It makes sense,” she adds. “They’re often quite young.”) To that end, 50 percent of a performer’s upper body has to be covered during their programs — and flesh-toned mesh, used by almost all designers, doesn’t count toward that.
Even when designers do check all the boxes, that doesn’t necessarily mean a look will pass muster with judges.
“There are rules, and then there are unwritten rules,” Braden Overett, the designer behind Adam Rippon’s Olympic looks.
 (Reuters)
“There are rules, and then there are unwritten rules,” Braden Overett, the designer behind Adam Rippon’s Olympic looks, tells The Post. “When you’re an A-list skater, you’re essentially representing the entire sport on behalf of your country, to the world, so there are a lot of systems of feedback in place.”
Overett, who was a competitive skater himself, says that there’s an informal review process before major competitions such as the Olympics, during which judges communicate their preferences. Although judges “don’t mandate” what you can and cannot wear, it’s not something to be taken lightly, either, he says. (He killed a sleeveless top for Rippon a few seasons ago because he heard that judges weren’t feeling it.)
“You can’t please everyone,” he says, “but this sport is about putting yourself together in the best way possible, to do the best you can for the best result.”
