OKAY, last post overall and then I promise I'll make like- idk a pinned reference post among other things on my tumblr like I've been meaning to actually do for the longest time.

But ONCE AGAIN, I am subjecting @ikemendrew to the LAST of this personal Hell of a House project. Y'all are also welcome to ask questions about it as well, it was largely put together because we both play Sims and I use Sims for Floorplan references all the time when I finally actually do get around to drawing backgrounds or even writing backgrounds. The rest will be under cut of course to save everyone from the clogging of the dash.

Up to bat will be [Haha bat, love that for me right now.], please tell me that y'all got that painfully obvious joke and reference right there- Second floor Room #1.

This one was a little sporadic, redid it quite a fair bit, it was one of a few rooms where I literally spent more time undoing and redoing so much of it cause I could not for the life of me figure out how I wanted it to specifically look. Anyway, the hints are fairly obvious to the point. Def another one of my personal favorite rooms. I really do dig the quite quirky looking ones.

Room #2 for the Second Floor is rather simple and to the point, I legit could not think of much of a theme in full for it other than to just have it look fairly cozy and quiet. But a part of me is thinking of reworking it sometime at a later date, though the inspo/ref for the room's thematic didn't leave much for me to fully gauge and I say "How dare >:("

Room #3 for the Second floor, It's hard finding colors that aren't too obnoxiously pink that'll work well for the two that it's supposed to have a thematic to. But this is another room that I might go back and revisit at a later date and update the new pictures to this post for it.

But ain't it cute? Absolutely simple and cutesy and adorable? I think so. Especially with the lil teddy bear holding the hard in the one corner.

Now just casually moving onto the Third Floor rooms, and that wonderful one room that's a hybrid room between the third and second floor. I've always been a sucker for those kinds of rooms anyway-

Another fairly simple room to the point, that is the case for Room #1 of the Third floor, if you know then you know. And if you know, then you know who it's supposed to be themed after and if you know that you know that you know that I know. Then-

You vaguely get the picture with this room. I have my reasons, can you tell who I do and don't like with each little room theme thus far? Though the next room is the COMPLETE opposite of this one and it has me laughing.

Onto Room #2 of the Third floor! This one is absolutely my top tier favorite out of all the rooms I have done for this hell project of a house! The Documents strewn across the floor, the pictures on the wall, the classified wallpaper with the weird frame border! The Boxes and Hard drives and the Article display on the wall! The Spy gear on the dresser! Everything about it screams "This room is absolutely lived in!"

And you'll never guess the two that this entire room is themed on. Or maybe you will? Who knows! But it's totally my favorite of all the rooms I have done. 💕

LASTLY is the weird jointed room, with a few additional shots. It's my second favorite room by far, and as I've said I'm a COMPLETE sucker for these kinds of rooms. I know for a fact that they have an actual name but I cannot for the life of me remember at all!

But the last two shots you've already vaguely seen, but not the top two! There's no real set theme for this room other than it being one I'd personally would love to live in if I was allowed free reign to do what I wanted in terms of vaguely layouts.

There's two beds in between the top and bottom shots, but because it is a Murphy bed, I owe the Tiny Living pack my life for half of the furniture they have in it. But this room is meant to be shared by more than one person, trust me I know this.

Finally done with all those posts and Hey! Now I can just not look at it for awhile until I get very specific set up mods for it and actually start playing this lot.

Tumblr, this change is bad. A lot of other people have already shared their own complaints for this new and awful system, but it's time for me to properly throw my hat in the ring instead of at-ing you directly due to user error. Whoops.

[UPDATE 6/11/2023] HORRIBLE NEWS, EVERYONE! This change has hit mobile. There is no longer any way to access the previous version of a post except through theme reblog chaining on desktop. I've added some extra fun comments both as an edit to this post and as a reblog so nobody misses out.

All my complaints are in the read more because this got LONG.

TL;DR- This change breaks a major signifier used across the site, removes post functionality only to replace it with redundant blog links, and completely destroys a primary mode of social interaction that's been used on Tumblr for over a decade. Here's the Tumblr Staff support link so you can give feedback on how bad this change is.

Part One: Signifiers and Consistency

This is my biggest point, so it will be a bit of a doozy. Strap in.

This change is about making Tumblr operation 'intuitive and consistent' by unifying behavior between like-designed parts of the site. Now on the face that's not a bad reason to do things, and making sure users are able to intuit what a button does based on its properties is good design. I'll give an example:

Hearts symbolize the 'Like' function on Tumblr. The heart button on a post adds it to your Likes, the Likes option on your account is accompanied by that same heart, and Likes show up in post notes with that heart. This heart, then, becomes a consistent and reliable signifier. If you see a heart button on Tumblr, then whatever it's attached to probably has something to do with Likes.

So, back to the change. This change relates to the signifier of the 'Tumblr blog url link'. The idea is thus- on other parts of the site, such as the Search tab on mobile and on a blog in the dashboard tray, you will see related or similar blog suggestions like these:

These suggestions are Tumblr blog urls paired with their icon and a little bit of their blog, either the title or some recent posts of theirs. If you click on that url title, the link follows through to that blog. So there's the signifier: click on the url, go to the blog.

But now we have a bit of a snag. What about these?

Well, these LOOK like Tumblr blog url links. They're styled in the same way. In fact, the reblogger even has a blog icon next to it! So all signs point to these url links pointing directly to a Tumblr blog if clicked on. After this change, that's exactly what they do- so, like, no problem, right?

But, hold on. There's another signifier here! These aren't JUST Tumblr blog url links! This is…

Our good friend, the Reblog button! That's another classic Tumblr signifier, and it sits right next to the Like button I pontificated about. Reblogs are an integral part of Tumblr, and on top of every single reblogged post you will see that icon. And would you look at that- it's even the same color as the second url link!

Those url links that established the 'url link' signifier that we talked about before, in the search page and on the dashboard tray, aren't attached to any posts. But this url is, and the reblog symbol is right next to it. The reblog signifier modifies the url link signifier. This link should go to the reblog from this user. Right? Because it is a reblog FROM that url link- so that's where it should go! And that's where it used to go, before this update.

[EDIT] I came back to fix some typos I noticed but while I was away I tested mobile to see if this change hit the app yet. It has not, but what I saw instead confirmed the above point- on mobile, selecting the reblogged's url ALSO highlights the reblog icon next to it! These two signifiers are connected, and should be read together.

By changing the url links to be more 'consistent' with other url links across the site, a major signifier that keeps the site together has been broken entirely. What should lead to a reblog- something that is clearly shown through use of a recognizable, consistent symbol- no longer does.

Part Two: Redundant Redundancy

Okay, so that's not all this change does. It also adds a brand new functionality to the post header- the white space is now clickable and serves as a replacement for the original 'to this post' link on the reblogger's side of things. These headers also generate for anyone who adds to the post, and you can click through OP too.

This is also part of that design unity thing; on mobile tapping anywhere on the post header takes you to the post, and you can only tap on the blog url of the person the reblogger reblogged from. That makes sense, since on mobile you're maneuvering your fingers on a small screen and tapping a tiny url next to another tiny url is bound to cause problems.

I don't necessarily have a problem with this on the base of it. I have opinions about mobile and desktop parity that aren't really important here, but it does nicely showcase an issue I DO have- most of the changes made to reblogged posts are completely redundant and unnecessary.

[UPDATE] This change has hit mobile now, and it's added a fun new complaint about desktop-mobile parity that is now very suddenly a problem; the headers generated from reblogs with content don't have any responsive feedback for tapping them on mobile. OPs does, but any old Joes doesn't. This is not true on desktop, where on-hover a post header will change color; on mobile they stay completely white and plain with no on-tap color change. On top of that, the new headers are actually harder to see on mobile! There's no clear way to actually see where the header starts and the post continues! Tapping a header was deeply confusing because I got no confirmation I did anything of value until I was wisked away to a post- there's no signifier on mobile that this is a thing you can press.

This is what I was talking about in regards to desktop and mobile parity that wasn't important at the time- what's good for mobile isn't always good for desktop and vice versa. Having a post header be tappable on mobile instead of op's url link, where you have less fine motor control and there's a lot of small buttons clustered together, makes sense; but making all post headers into buttons on desktop isn't a good idea because they aren't 'buttons' and it's very hard to make it clear they are. I mentioned signifiers above and that applies to this change- there just aren't enough signs that show these are all buttons now and where they go. The fact that they're completely unresponsive on mobile really is the cherry on top, because you do not KNOW it's a button unless you tap it accidentally or already know from desktop that all headers link to reblogged posts. The design has been made more confusing; what was a functional affordance on mobile has been applied to desktop without limits or concern, making the original mobile affordance more confusing and producing a poor signifier.

Alright, that's enough from future me. Let's get back to the original post, about how this change that introduces a bad signifier is also redundant.

First of all, it's not like clicking the link url just threw you into a post abyss when you clicked it. Clicking through to a reblog…still took you to that blog, both on mobile and on desktop. On mobile all you need to look through the blog proper is to pull down and refresh; on desktop it's even easier, because following a link pulls up the dashboard tray for that blog with the blogs url immediately below their icon.

This change then removes one step to get to the front of a blogs page, and puts the original longer path on the new clickable header. They go to the same place, the first is just exactly one click faster. You could do the exact same thing by clicking the user icon instead.

But wait! We can get even more redundant! You know what else is standard Tumblr functionality on desktop? The hover card!

If you hover over any url link for about a second, a card for that blog will pop up. This tray lets you follow a blog, send asks, report them, check their popular posts and do a bunch of stuff straight from the dashboard. It also takes you directly to their blog if you click the url link on the card itself! That's right, there was already a way to go directly to the blog the previous user reblogged from! And every single blog url link does this, too- not just on post headers, but even in the text of a post itself.

So before this change, you had five ways of interacting on a post:

Click the reblogger's url > Reblogger's post.

Click the reblogged's url > Reblogged's post.

Click the reblogger's icon > Reblogger's blog.

Hover on the reblogger's url > Reblogger's blog.

Hover on the reblogged's url > Reblogged's blog.

One of these is redundant, but that's fine- it's just how url links work, and it's better that all urls can do that. Signifiers, we talked about this. But every other link goes to a different place, including the previous version of the post.

After this change, there's six, with changes in bold:

Click the reblogger's url > Reblogger's blog.

Click the reblogged's url > Reblogged's blog.

Click the reblogger's icon > Reblogger's blog.

Hover on the reblogger's url > Reblogger's blog.

Hover on the reblogged's url > Reblogged's blog.

Click the white space header next to a user > User's post.

We now have three ways of getting to the blog of the person who reblogged this post, two ways to get to the blog of the person they reblogged from, ONE way to get to the post, and ONLY if someone added to it!

This change removes functionality and replaces it with needless redundancy. As I said near the top of this section, we could already get to the blog through a reblog link- so all this does is remove getting to previous post iterations.

Part Three: Broken Chains

And hey, let's talk about previous post iterations. Y'know, something that's super important on Tumblr? Different versions of a post float around the site for years- some have been around for a decade or more. And some are only available for one post.

As I'm sure everyone knows, unless a group of tags are peer reviewed and added to the body of the post itself or are appended to the next reblog in the chain, they only exist on that version of the post. This means every iteration of a post is functionally unique, and long before we were given the ability to check the tags on a reblog directly, the only way you could check the tags for a post was by checking every iteration. This practice still exists today with 'prev tags'- users still find it useful to gesture to a previous version of a post and show what other people were thinking or add their own thoughts.

Remember the new redundant links? All that means you can't get to a previous version of a post anymore. Those tags are functionally lost now, unless you dig through that persons blog or through all the notes of a specific post. Sure that may not be a problem for a post with 300 notes or so- but what about 27,000? What about a post that was reblogged three weeks ago? If you're trying to wrangle Tumblr's dodgy search function on the blog itself, what if the post has no text to search for, or if the blog has it's search function turned off? Any post tagged with prev tags now directs to literally nothing. Anyone arguing or conversing in the tags is now speaking at air to everyone else.

There is still one way to trace reblogs. You can access the blog itself- not the dashboard tray, but the actual url.tumblr.com blog- by using a hidden link in the meatball menu off the side of the post.

From there, you can track a post backwards through proper blogs. The reblogged posts will have a 'via Blog' note on them, and you can follow that trail all the way up a chain.

…Unless someone doesn't have a theme enabled. Without a theme, a user won't have a url.tumblr.com domain and it will redirect to the dashboard tray, breaking the chain. And, as of an older update, blogs by default do not have themes enabled- so any and all new users suddenly roadblock this process. Oops.

All of this means that what was once a convenient social aspect of Tumblr has been completely severed with little to no alternative. Trying to wade through hundreds upon hundreds of notes to find the one you're looking for is tedious, time consuming, and potentially impossible if the post is large enough.

Finale: What Now?

Right, so- this sucks. I didn't even go into how this makes it tough to find and block cr/pt/t/rfs if a post passes into their hateful space, or how this makes it harder to copy post links without tracking shit because it's in a different menu now, or how it's now more difficult to access a previous post for reporting purposes. All that shit's also true, but they're side effects of the big three problems the changes introduce.

This change is ultimately user-hostile and seems to follow the worrying trend of 'other sites are doing it, so let's do it too!' Tumblr's been kicking about recently. Tumblr Live, the new change to images and videos, gating viewing posts behind making an account, and attempted algorithm feeds through 'Best Stuff First' and 'Based On Your Likes' are what immediately come to mind. Tumblr's defining, driving aspect for it's continued existence has and always will be its uniqueness. Pretending to be Instagram and TikTok and fucking Twitter will do it absolutely no favors- all it does is undermine what actually makes this site, as a social platform, interesting and vibrant.

But it's one thing to just complain and it's another entirely to provide feedback. Here's a link to the Tumblr Staff support page. They've walked back on new features before when we've made a ruckus- the Shop icon replacement is on the forefront of my mind right now- so it's time to make another.

TL;DR 2- This change makes browsing Tumblr more difficult than it needs to be. It breaks previously established signifiers and removes vital social functions only to add redundant and empty features to cater to a new userbase instead of actually improving the site for the users they already have. It's not a good change.

Coming soon: Kink Bingo and H/C Bingo 2024!

Something kinky this way comes... (and it's probably limping).

Yes, very soon we will be back with our most daring events of the season: the Kink Bingo and the H/C (Hurt/Comfort) Bingo! With the Valentines Day just around the corner, it's time to charge up your toys, prep your bandages and generally brace yourselves for a delicious avalanche of guilt-free indulgence!

As usual, we will be running those 2 events in paraller, so you can take part in both, switch between the two, or take part in just one, and totally ignore the other. They are unrelated to each other.

Basics:

We have 2 Collections: Kink Bingo and H/C Bingo

In each of those, on the 17th of Feb, the prompts are going to be revealed, on a 7x7 card.

We are playing between 17th of February and 17th of March.

Your task is to create something for 7 consecutive fields (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) to achieve a bingo line. 

... Or not. We really have no way of checking who’s completing which line, so you can use it as a free-for-all, pick and choose prompt board, if you prefer. But it’s good to challenge yourself and attempt prompts you wouldn’t normally pick - you may be surprised to find you like it!

Both Collections are fully Anonymous and will remain that way forever. However, you may choose to ‘reveal’ yourself as the author and ‘claim’ your work, if you wish at the end of this event. You don’t have to. More about this below. 

Usual pairings apply: FiKi or any fictional pairing portrayed by Dean or Aidan.

Q: But why run those two bingos together?

A: The common theme for these events is that they cover subjects that could be considered ‘guilty pleasures’ or ‘taboo’. We wanted to create a safe environment where these themes can be explored and shared. Plus, they will have identical rules, so it didn’t make sense to run another Bingo event, with a different theme, later in the year.

Q: Do I need to post each response in a separate work or can I have a single work with chapters?

A: We would suggest separate works, because it will make it easier for you to tag it appropriately, and for the readers to search for, or avoid.

Q: Can I create one thing (story or art) for multiple fields in a single bingo card?

A: You can, but we would encourage you not to. The aim of this event is to create as much new content as we can and that doesn’t help it. Having said that, we understand that sometimes brain just connects things and it wants a combo.

Q: Can I create one thing (story or art) that covers both a Kink and H/C scenario?

A: You can, but we would encourage you not to. See: above.

Q: Can I mix and match pairings, e.g. within a single line have 4 FiKi and 3 Britchell?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I create more than one response to a single prompt field, for example for different pairings?

A: Yes, just post them as separate works.

Q: Can I use a prompt that someone else has already used before me?

A: Absolutely.

Q: Can I somehow visualise which line I’m working on, or which prompts I managed to fill?

A: Sure. Feel free to copy the Bingo Card image and start marking off the ones you’ve done. You can then post your updated Bingo Card picture with each response.

Q: Can I comment on the works posted in the Collections?

A: Yes, please do! If you wish to comment anonymously though, you’ll need to log out of your account first and comment as Anon, or open the story in a private tab. The Collection won’t anonymise the commenter’s identity automatically.

Q: How does the ‘Anon’ thing work?

A: The author is displayed as ‘Anonymous’ to everyone, except you. Yes, this includes the mods - we don’t know either. If you wish to respond to your comments, it will automatically show as ‘Anonymous Creator’.

Q: When can I ‘claim’ my works and ‘de-anon’?

A: Please only do this after the event has ended, i.e. after the summary post has gone up. The guessing is part of the fun!

Q: How can I ‘claim’ my works and ‘de-anon’?

A: Simply message @linane-art with the works that are yours and you wish to 'reveal' now. As a mod, I have a way of removing the anon status, while keeping the work in the Collection. It will automatically become your own work, like anything else, and you will not lose any kudos or comments. You may then choose to make an accompanying Tumblr post, if you wish to promote it.

Q: Do I have to ‘de-anon’ at the end of the event?

A: No. You can leave your works as anonymous forever, if you wish.

Q: I am an Artist and I would also like to take part.

A: Great! Fantastic! We’re all dying here to see it! However, because we all have our distinctive art styles, we can’t think of any way to keep you anonymous. If this doesn’t bother you, just play like everyone else, using artwork inspired by the prompts for your responses.

Q: But how to post artwork as a part of event response?

A: Post your artwork on Tumblr or host it elsewhere (Tumblr doesn’t like sexytimes, so it might try to block you). That will give you a hyperlink to the picture itself. Then create a new AO3 work within Kink or H/C Collection, and add a picture (using hyperlink) into the body of the work. If in doubt, message @linane-art for help.

It was the end of the evening shift. He did a lot of closing nowadays, night blurring into dawn: there wasn’t anyone to drag him out. Not anymore. On the counter, there was a finished drink, the customer’s name written on it in sharpie. His coworker must have ducked out just before calling out their name. He picks it up. It’s not until he calls out the name that it registers: “Enkidu!” From the back of the coffee shop, a familiar figure approaches, and Gilgamesh’s heart clenched. For a desperate moment, he dared to hope.

Dirk exhales, rereading the paragraphs for typos. Then he saves it into the folder titled Oubliette, and opens a different text file. His SBaHJ reverse-mpreg vore isn’t going to write itself, and Dirk can’t disappoint his readership.

Even as the thought forms, his inbox dings. His heart speeds up at the view of the sweetest words known to man or machine:

Dirk permits himself a small smile. This guy has been commenting on Dirk’s fics, first in a binge and now on every new installment he updated. Dirk mentally fist-bumps him before opening his WIP folder, where the relevant fic document lives. It’s a good day.

It is not a good night.

Dirk should go the fuck to sleep. Or at least to shower. He washed the dishes earlier and his shirt has more unmentionable fluids on it than his latest fic update, which is saying something.

Instead, he goes to Romeomance’s page and hits refresh.

Not even a tick on the visit count.

This is stupid. Dirk is being a useless idiot. If people can’t appreciate his subtle satire and how it corresponds with the tone of the original comics and movies, that’s on them, and not on him.

There’s a newer fanfic than his with twice the hitcount, not even looking at kudos.

Well, so what? People like what they like. As long as Dirk is happy with the stuff he writes – and while he’s always aware of places he could improve, he rather is happy with it – what does it matter what response some other person’s fic gets?

The title is a lower-case quote from a song that was in the top 40s ten years ago. The tags include Enemies to Lovers, Only One Bed, and Slow Burn. (The fic isn’t even 10K, and it’s marked as complete, so Dirk is a teensy bit skeptical of how slow that burn is.)

Dirk clicks in. Maybe he can learn a thing or two.

The first two paragraphs make a fairly clever allusion to the famous stairs monologue. It’s a surprisingly fresh outlook on a piece of canon that’s been worn to palimpsest and back by fanon. It could be a good fic. Dirk might enjoy it. Better, Dirk might learn how to write something that isn’t worthless drivel–

He closes the tab.

This would be an excellent time to go shower.

He opens the tab again. He reads through the story grimly, marking how the dialogue sounds lively and not like two finger puppets squeaking at one another. Yes, okay, it’s a stylistic choice for Dirk. That, and he can’t fucking write dialogue to save his life.

By the time Dirk reaches the author’s notes at the end, the only argument he can make against deleting all his own fic is that it can serve as a cautionary tale.

The end notes thank two beta readers. Dirk runs his fics past Roxy when he can swing it, but for the most part, he hasn’t managed to attract a beta reader in years. Maybe that’s why everything he writes gargles balls.

There’s also a link to the author’s entry in the Every Little Bid Helps fanfic auction. Dirk clicks on the link mostly out of self preservation: if he rereads this fic, he really will orphan his account. That would be sad for that centaursTesticle guy, wouldn’t it? Otogi No Uta Masterlist [WIP]

This series has like 3 fans so I figured I'd make it easier for people to get into it. The story is told through a series of "movements," CD dramas, and a manga. It also has cute comics, posted on the official Mute Twitter. This list will focus on collecting sources for English speaking fans.

If you don't know anything about the series, you should start by reading this twitter thread by nemuruoogarasu! Feel free to look through the unofficial wiki as well, you can learn a little more about each band and character there. The series is mostly based on the bands and the characters, so pick your favorites :)

After that, listen to some of the songs. I have a playlist compiling them from the official channel here, and I have listed them below as well. There is no specific order you have to listen to them in. Be aware that some of the songs are not uploaded in their entirety, as some have to be purchased through the official drama CDs. The full mp3 files can accessed through amazon.jp.

Translations are in progress as of writing.

Story

The story is a bit confusing to follow, and as of writing, not everything has been translated. I will be updating this as often as possible.

Basically, Otogi no Uta is about several bands fighting with special music powers in "Live Battles" against each other. This is in order to obtain "The End," a thing which can grant any wish. Those who posess music powers are called "Utaibito," which could roughly translate to "Melody User," "Musician," or "Music Person" in english (though I left it as is in the manga).

Manga

The manga serves as a backstory for each band and character. You should probably get to know the characters a little through the wiki first so you are not completely lost. Each two chapters go over the backstory of how one of the bands formed and what their goal is and set the group dynamics and personalities.

Also to note, each chapter title corresponds to a song by that band!

Quick note: So like. All the things I plan to write happen when he’s 18+. and there's no sibling or parent incest. (bringing that up cause i got an. interesting dm once.) So this is just a quick disclaimer of sorts. And I’m not hating on anyone who wants to write or read something dark! I mean for instance I have a time travel Percy/Hermes brainworm that is considered dark and probably not what a lot of people want to read, so i'll tag it as such.

The One Where There is a War

Explained a little more in detail here but I have no problem talking a little about it again. It was inspired by this one perpollo fic that I'm still looking for so I can link it, bc trust me, it is GOOD. (edit: FOUND IT!!!! HERE it’s by @ghost-bxrd)The premise of that fic was a war between the gods and demigods, and my fic is meant to draw from that as well as some elements from Lore by Alexandra Bracken. It takes place post-second Giant war, but I'm toying with the idea of having the war and all related events, like gaea's rising, happen when percy is maybe 19-20? I'm not sure yet though. I might keep the timeline as is instead. For now, just know that it is post-second giant war.

Anyways, the premise is the new war the demigods have waged on the gods, when Percy, already a conflicted party to the war, comes across an injured Hermes when he is separated from his group of scouts.

2. Warning: Untitled For Now But It Is The Dark!Hermes One

you ever read child surprise by aphroditesfavorite or the breezeblocks series by violetmoreviolent?

Both are perpollo, and while I've not caught up to child surprise (i'm two chapters in, its been in my marked for later for a while, and ive had the tab open for ages, i just keep getting distracted lol) i know that it does deal with a time-travel trope, with percy, post-second giant and titan wars, waking up in the past, the day athena and poseidon compete over athens.

from what i hear, where child surprise is perpollo, there is a dark, forcecful hermes scene, which is absolutely not meant to be shippy btw! i heard from a friend who has gotten farther than me that the aphroditesfavorite has also stated that the shippy comments received about that hermes scene has made them uncomfortable so like, dont go reading it for that guys please.

breezeblocks meanwhile has a take on dark!apollo, a more ancient apollo, in a way. an apollo that you remember IS an olympian and all that may entail. i actually have caught up with the latest updates, and it takes place in the present. i dont want to go spoiling, but I will say that like, the way its all unraveling and unfolding is just so interesting, im high key invested.

@ashilrak and @mrthology have also written an absolutely heartbreaking, gutwrenching, exceptionally glorious banger of a fic, HAUNT ME, THEN- that also really captures the otherness and ancient, almost older, aspect of the olympians.

anyways, the reason i bring these fics up is because i just really love the idea that percy was born from the sea, while also acknowledging that one of my favorite parts of the whole book series in the first place is percy's connection to mortality and to his mother. reading child surprise really was root of a lot of ideas of percy emerging from the saltwater fountain in athens at the time of poseidon and athena's competition, with the idea that the trip to the past coincides with unwanted percy's ascension. it is not the birth of percy jackson the demigod, but in half, percy jackson the deity (the other half near coming to fruition in tartarus before he forced himself to stop.)

all that^ was just a very long way to say, this fic, im not sure WHAT it is yet, or where the direction its going in is, but we have established permes in the modern era, the time slipping happens when percy is struggling with keeping his impending ascension at bay, and then percy deals with a hermes at his like. prime? if thats the word. having to reconcile that with the softer versions they know later.

3. The One I've Been Struggling With

i'm just gonna copy/paste some stuff from my outline, like just the first two pages. this is the most concrete fic wip i have lmao. its all very rambly bc thats how the process goes for me so sorry abt that! anyways, starts below:-

an au that is not modern times, but perhaps in the past? Ancient Greek times? So more “ancient greek minded hermes.” Or if you think there is a better alternative, that would work too, I’m all ears. Trickster god Hermes (which he is) and minor immortal(?) Percy.

i dont know what percy's situation is yet. need to figure that out

i was looking at a comic and thought, trickster god Hermes would definitely pull something like this on Percy. And then I thought, what if, trickster god Hermes, sees this one man (Percy) and falls in love with him. But this man seems to pine for a woman who doesn’t love him back, and so Hermes takes her shape. (I don’t know who this woman would be. Annabeth? It could be her, but I also love the bond Percy and Annabath have in general, she and him are incredible friends. Rachel? I loved her friendship with Percy too.)

Anyways, Hermes taking their shape made me laugh a bit because wow Percy is getting catfished by a god. And then I was like WHAT IF- Percy himself is a minor immortal like. A young nymph-ish type. A prince of Atlantis? A demigod turned prince of Atlantis? I am not sure what he is, but, I am going to use nymph as a placeholder until I figure this out. 

So sure, Percy is immortal, newly or otherwise, but he’s young and still not fully like, aware (I don’t know if that's the right word) about what it means to be immortal because he literally was born 20 years ago, which is normal mortal young man age. And Percy is like, “I’m as old as them and I want to live as them. I was them.”

His father is protective of course, he is aware of the way of the gods and how they chase pretty people. Poseidon warned him about gods, how they come and go, how he should never fall for one because loving one usually ends in tragedy or heartbreak- that to them hearts are easily won by tricks and discarded as easily. (Thinking again: mortal Percy turned immortal by marrying/mating with Hermes? Except, then I thought, Poseidon wants Percy to be immortal–if he thought Hermes showing interest and Percy reciprocating would allow for Percy to choose to be immortal he would probably begrudgingly allow it. So then….immortal Percy? Need to think)

The big Hermes reveal is when Percy is attacked or injured, or some other god shows up, and Hermes saves him but reveals his true form in the process. 

BACK TO THE PLOT!!!

Hermes was like, I will have this nymph, and that is FINAL. And Percy is kind even though he is not necessarily always NICE, (it may be ancient greek but new yorker percy is timeless) he's sweet and cares so much. he’s a hero and so loyal. he's brave and mischievous and genuinely good, and Hermes is just. Blown away, by the way Percy loves, so deep and it consumes you, to be the one Percy cares for, Hermes thinks there is no feeling like it.

Hermes tells himself that Percy can't possibly be deserving of mortal love. So what if golden haired Annabeth (placeholder for now, still dont know if we're going the annabeth route?) is a warrior who can run like the deer and loves the very woods Percy does. No, he needs a god's adoration, a force to be reckoned with at his beck and call to fulfill his every whim the way Percy himself makes others feel. If people would be loved the way Percy loves, everyone would be a god. 

I am laughing at Hermes taking the shape of Annabeth while talking to Percy, but also using the moment to talk up Hermes. Like if Percy is in his starry eyed about Annabeth phase, Annabeth wanting to have a sit down would be so exciting for him, and Hermes as Annabeth would be petty enough to be like lemme proselytize about myself, “have you heard of the great wonderful god Hermes?”

Percy being like, “Yeah my dad tells me every day, stay away from these people and then gives me a list of gods, why?”

Hermes immediately pissy

Percy is still talking, “so yeah Hermes is on the list too- why, Annabeth? Did something happen? you look...not well. Are you sick?”

Hermes, through gritted teeth, “with all due respect to... your father, I think you should hear about the god Hermes because he's not... whatever it is your dad said.”

Percy: Well, apparently the god Hermes fixates on pretty people and tries to get into their pants using trickery.

Hermes as Annabeth: CHOKES

Hermes-Annabeth: THAT IS SUCH SLANDER. I have never.... ahem, i have never heard of that about the god Hermes

!!! WELCOME HOME SPOILERS !!!

The Welcome Home site just opened up again, me and my friends have been tearing it apart. I'm sure people have already found most of what we have, but I'm going to document it anyway.

!! Here's a second warning for if you want to look through the site yourself, which I highly recommend if you haven't already !!

Still here? Ok then, let's do this!!

All the hidden sites will be linked, but there will also be instructions on where to find them if you wish to look for them yourself! If you don't want to read this long ass post, I've made a list of all the hidden sites at the bottom of the post.

New Content

Starting off on the home page, something new is already visible. After waiting a few seconds, a little doodle of Home will begin to be drawn. These doodles appear throughout the site, I'll have a list of all of the ones me and my friends have found at the end and where to find them, along with the links if you're too lazy to look for them yourself.

These doodles all send you to pages with audio recordings, and a floating disk. All of the disks seem to be of Wally talking. Other then the obvious "well duh, you can hear his voice!", You can also tell from the color. On the neighborhood page, when you click look at the descriptions of all the neighbors, they all have voice recordings now, next to them is a disk. Each disk has it's own color, depending on the character. Wally's disk is red, just like all the disks in these hidden recordings. Albeit they're more of a... dark red... but oh well!!

Also would like to point out something my friend noticed, if you look closely at the center of these disks, you you can see an eye! I think that's pretty cool.

Another cool new detail that might be a little hard to notice if you have a small screen, it's the fact that there's 2 eyes on each side of the site, beyond the border! If you can't see them normally, try zooming out to see them!

Moving onto the "Welcome Home" tab, you will also notice that, in addition to the doodles, there's also little bugs everywhere! The difference between the two is that, rather then taking you to an audio recording, the bugs send you to sites all called "answer", with all of them having a video attached. I will also have a list of all the bugs in order at the end of the post.

Something unique about the URLs of the bug pages is that they all end in "(number)-14-(initials of characters in video)", which leads me to believe that there's 14, me and my friends have found all 14.

Before continuing, I just want to say how grateful I am to Clown for add transcripts to ALL of these recordings, including the hidden messages (if you highlight beneath them, text of what is being said should appear.), I personally have a hard time following along with audios if there's no visuals or subtitles, so these transcripts are really helpful!!

Morse Code & Hidden Phrase

Carrying on, there is one disk in particular that I would like to point out, before the update, you could click on the little area beneath Home to find a hidden site called "so below", after the update, if you go to the site and wait a few seconds, a spiral underneath Wally will begin to appear. Clicking on it will take you to a site called "neighbor" with a very shaky disk. Playing the audio will get you nothing but noise from Home. It seems like a dead end, however, looking at the transcript of the disk, it reads "[There is no dialogue. Only the sounds of Home creaking, groaning, banging, or squeaking. …Morse code?]", implying that the noise Home is making is morse code. I can't understand morse code, but with the help of my friend @/gothonasunday on Instagram, he was able to decipher the words "help us" being said in this audio.

All of the disks having just a word seems to indicate that a sentence is to be made with them. My personal favorite version I've seen of this is by @/king.achilles on Tiktok, stating the phrase might be "You will understand soon neighbor. I will help you find a way. I will help you find a phone." (Tried to put the link for this video TWICE it just wont work I'm so sorry!!)

The Password

Something that interested me greatly is the password. If you go to the "Playfellow Exhibition" page, 3 (or 4 I suppose) paragraphs below the slideshow of images, clicking on the word "answer" on the third to last sentence will take you to a site with an image of frantic writing on a piece of paper talking about a password. Clicking it again will take you to an image of a safe. Clicking it once again will ask you for a password.

Now, on the piece of paper it says "CODE IS 5 CHARACTERS!! - WORKSHEET IS 5 QUESTIONS - KEY??" On the slideshow of images on the "Playfellow Exhibition" page, you can find a worksheet with 5 questions. The answers of these questions are characters. Taking the first letter of each of the characters names from the answers will give us the password. BSPJW.

Putting this in takes you to a "Staff Only" site. (I wont link it since you cant access it without the password anyway!) The site is full of writing and weird images. The page seems to be written by someone going insane, hearing a phone ringing. with the blacked out text repeating the sentence "Ring-ring. Ring. Hello? Can you hear me? Call back soon, please. Ring. Ring ring. Ring. Won't you please pick up?" Though I suspect that might not be the site maker writing that.

On one of the images in the slideshow on this page, it shows a notepad of doodles next to what seems to be a letter. unlike the other texts in the slideshow, there is no transcript. I don't know if this was on purpose, or a mistake. Either way I took a picture of the text, brightened it, and tried to make out what it read. This is what I got, with some help from my friend to decipher what I couldn't

"Hello.

My name doesn’t matter, I am here to catalogue something. I’m not sure is fully real. But it must be, I’m holding all the evidence in my hands. Pictures. Characters. Text. I can barely read. It’s called “Welcome Home” and it looks like it might’ve been a children’s [???]? Like I said I can’t tell.

It was sopping wet when I found it. When I first reached into one of the brightly colored envelopes, my hand was already covered in some gross [???] material. It feels like antiques are always covered in some kind of grime. I’m going to clean up what I have and do a little more digging.

There’s only one name I can make out [???] Wally. Probably important but, like I said, I’ll keep looking

Some additional things I'd like to say

I think its interesting how all the videos of the bugs seem to be from Wally's perspective. It also seems that they could be happening all in one day, since some of them match up. I also find it interesting how the only hidden bug, #14, was the only one that featured Home. In that same video, Barnaby is recounting what happened to him in the other videos, mentioning things like Julie's joke from video #11, or Howdy's family from video #12. I'm not sure what that means, but I wanted to add it anyway.

CitoIta and Kingdom Hearts Headcanons

Because I like Kingdom Hearts and I like them and they are gamers

(I say CitoIta but honestly, it’s just because it’s about Citron & Itaru, the ship is kinda vague here lol. Like it’s probably optional to read it that way at this point)

In this post, scientifically backed by my memory, understanding of the characters and other things (eg: feelings, unlisted headcanons, & my understanding of types of people in fanbases/the kh fandom, minus shippers, I’m not touching that... here, I might consider it in the future, probably not but maybe), I will go over basics like how many games they’ve played and their fave games, trios, characters by groups, and moments. Also, there are conversations and little tidbits about how it fits into their world. I tried to pick a favorite battle but note that they probably have more than one those are just notable ones that I thought were worth mentioning. There will be KH spoilers if you’re someone unfamiliar/not caught up with it.

So yeah those are some of my headcanons involving KH and CitoIta (and Banri with minor Mankai mentions.) If anyone wants to do Taichi(who idk could play already, while I haven’t picked any out I know what type of moments would be his faves, I just can’t figure out yet if he prefers characters he relates to or characters he thinks are cool/want to be like) or Kumon (who I’d feel would want to start after seeing them enjoy it, bet Banri and Citron would have him play chronologically by timeline rather than release order “for science”) or any other characters, really, I’d gladly read it. I can see Taichi & Kumon playing KH but I don’t feel like I know them well enough to do this with them lol. I’m not even sure I know Banri well even to this with him but I attempted it lol. If there’s any questions about my decisions I might answer them, some are easier to put into words than others though.

How Cory Doctorow uses browser tabs for productivity superpowers

Cory defends lifehacking, which “is in pretty bad odor these days, and with good reason: a once-useful catch-all for describing how to make things easier has become a pit of productivity porn, grifter hustling, and anodyne advice wreathed in superlatives and transformed into SEO-compliant listicles.” But at its core, lifehacking is just a collection of little tricks that help people be more productive.

He links to his notes from a 2004 talk by Danny O’Brien: “Life Hacks: Tech Secrets of Overprolific Alpha Geeks”.

O’Brien’s inspiration was his social circle, in which people he knew to be no smarter or better or motivated than anyone else in that group were somehow able to do much more than their peers, in some specific domain. O’Brien delved deeply into these peoples' lives and discovered that each of them had merely (“merely!") gotten very good at using one or two tools to automate things that would otherwise take up a lot of their time.

These “hacks” freed up their practitioners to focus on things that mattered more to them.

… everyone who created a little hack was faintly embarrassed by it, and assumed that others who learned about their tricks would find them trivial or foolish. O’Brien changed the world by showing that other people were, in fact, delighted and excited to learn about their peers' cool little tricks.

(Unfortunately, this eventually opened the floodgates of overheated posts about some miraculous hack that turned out to indeed be silly and trivial or even actively bad, but that wasn’t O’Brien’s fault!)

Cory notes that he is a pretty productive fellow himself, having written nine books during lockdown. And he shares a couple of his little tricks.

One of them is having “a group of daily tabs that I open in a new browser every morning. The meat of this tab group is websites I want to check in with every day, either because they don’t have RSS feeds, or because I want to make sure I never miss an update.”

These include news and opinion websites, Wikipedia pages whose edits he is watching, and also personal finance and ecommerce sites.

I do something similar: I have three folders of tabs: One I open multiple times daily, another that I also open multiple times daily, but less often than the first group, and a third that I open 1x/day. I call them, imaginatively enough, “First,” “Second” and “Daily.” The first group is social media replies, the second group is social media streams, and the third group has more social streams, Discord channels and one or two blogs that have lousy or nonexistent RSS feeds.

Tabs, like lifehacks, are also in bad odor. Everyone stresses about how many tabs they have open…. But this is a very different way to think about tabs. Rather than opening a window full of tabs that need your detailed, once-off attention later, this method is about using groups of tabs so that you can pay cursory, frequent attention to them.

I find RSS, newsletters and daily tab groups do the same job, enable me to check on a couple of hundred websites daily in very little time. I currently use the NewsBlur RSS reader, which is also a great place to read newsletters. (If you don’t like NewsBlur, my friend Barbara Krasnoff writes up five good RSS readers.)

Also:

My little tab habit is so incredibly useful, such a powerful way to seize back time and power from powerful actors who impose burdens on me, that I sometimes forget how, for other people, tabs are a symptom of a life that’s spiraling out of control. For me, a couple hundred tabs are a symbol of a couple hundred tasks that I’m totally on top of, a symbol of control wrestled back from others who are hostile to my interests.

Cory talks about how tabs are an example of “generative” technology—innovations that users implement in ways that were unanticipated by people who developed technology.

It occurs to me that a reason I love the Obsidian documents app is that it’s an example of “generative” technology. I use Obsidian in weird ways that don’t seem to be the designers’ intent, but it works well for me—and I think that actually is part of the designers’ intent.

"Y/N, you simply won't believe the news!" Your friend, Mrs, Bucket, chirped excitedly as the two of you met up to run errands together. The two of you had worked together previously, and she became a good friend to you despite the infrequency of your contact.

"What is it, Hellen?"

"Charlie's found it - the last golden ticket! Isn't it exciting?" She was more animated than you'd seen her in a long time, and she continued quickly. "I was thinking - and forgive me if this is too bold, but, I was thinking... perhaps you could take him for the tour?" And then you saw it - the mischievous glint in her eye.

Hellen knew a secret that you'd told few others - you'd known Willy Wonka when the two of you were children, and had been an item for much of your youth.

"I understand if you can't, or don't want to. I just thought... Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's silly." You told her you would think about it, and she didn't mention it again as you went onto your errands.

After that, it seemed as if you somehow saw more of his name everywhere you went; advertisement and news articles. Of course it was the fervor around the contest, but nonetheless you couldn't escape the ghost of your past. It was a pleasant ghost, at least.

There was a form to send in before the tour, giving the names of the chaperones. You'd kept it visible, and quickly penned your name down before the deadline.

It all happened so fast - Hellen asked, you agreed, and in the blink of an eye you were standing at the gates with Charlie by your side. And then the moments dragged until Wonka himself finally emerged. He looked very different, of course, but yet somehow still the same. The other guardians were quick to rush up to introduce themselves and their children, but he hurried through them until he got to you.

"And Y/N. I was looking forward to seeing you most of all. You do remember me, don't you?"

The candy maker lit up when you told him that you did remember him, grinning wide and looking much like the boy you'd known long ago.

"I named one of my chocolates after you, you know. And I'll tell you a secret - it's my most favorite creation." He paused only a moment before continuing, "come, I've got such marvelous things to show you."

He held out his arm for you to take, paying no mind to the other chaperones as he lead the group inside.

Life Update!

Hi, my lovelies!

I know I’ve been pretty MIA on this blog the past few months. I do want to let you know that I haven’t completely abandoned it or anything like that. (I still very much am following Connor’s career, still adore him, still always want to talk about him lol), I am however not posting any new fics right now. This is not for a lack of ideas, but because I am using these ideas for more personal writings.

For those of you that are unaware, I published my first novel, Love in the Classroom, earlier this year, in April. Since then I have been focusing on writing my novels.

I have two more coming out at the beginning of next year. One on January 24th, and another on May 31st. January’s release is titled You Were Never the Plan, and May’s is My Boy(s) of Summer. 

All three of these stories hold a very special place in my heart, and if any of you happen to be missing my writing and are wanting to support, all three books are available on Amazon. Love in the Classroom is currently available in both paperback and on Kindle (and if you do read it, the characters may seem a little familiar...). The other two are only available to pre-order in the Kindle version, but will be available in paperback on the release date. 

I also now have a website that you can check out. It tells you a little bit about me, my works, where to get them (Love in the Classroom is also available on Barnes and Noble’s website!!), and some extras/sneak peeks into my new releases.

since ao3 is working again, to better topics- gushing over fanworks, because, well, i'm well and truly obsessed with everyone's fucking TALENT over here in this little corner. although, to be fair, you probably know a lot of them already? i'm always late to the best parties, but here goes nothing-

i am still working through things beyond mistake, because?? the premise got me hooked. mickey in especially is beautifully written and i can't. get. enough of it. also, PJ is a badass fucking friend and right for, well, all of *gestures* it.

The promised Dehya post

So. We’re finally getting Dehya next update.

Yes, yes, I’m late to the party but I wanted to post about this because I’ve seen some leaked footage of her abilities and she looks sick as hell. I feel like I might actually enjoy playing a new 5-Star character again, so I also decided to look at her page on Project Amber. Elemental Skill

Dehya’s got some really interesting abilities. Her Elemental Skill, in addition to dealing damage, creates a field with a few different properties. First, it works similarly to the Raiden Shogun’s skill: enemies who take damage while in the field will suffer an additional attack from Dehya.

The second part is where it gets fun. Characters within this field gain poise (resistance to interruption), and when they take damage, a portion of that damage goes to Dehya instead. She’s essentially the equivalent of an MMO tank, which is really unique and suits her as a bodyguard. We’ve seen similar things from other characters, like Beidou and Xingqiu providing damage reduction with their Elemental Bursts, but nothing that’s worked in quite the same fashion as Dehya.

She doesn’t stop there, though. Dehya’s tanking capabilities are enhanced by her Passive Talents, the first of which reduces the damage she takes from her own damage absorption ability when she uses her skill or burst. Then her second talent will instantly heal 20% of her Max HP when she drops below 30%, and continue to heal 10% of her Max HP every two seconds for ten seconds, basically healing her to full.

These abilities honestly seem crazy strong, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Dehya gets nerfed at some point down the line. But that aside, I still haven’t talked about her Elemental Burst yet.

Elemental Burst

This is what got me hype for Dehya when I first saw it. She temporarily ditches her sword and unleashes an automatic barrage of punches, ending in a kick. This barrage only lasts four seconds, but in that time you can use Normal Attacks in between punches to accelerate the speed of the combo. It just looks fun as hell to use and it’s pretty powerful too: 203.5% ATK per hit at Talent Level 8.

Constellation

Dehya’s first Constellation level is a big one. Her skill and burst gain a damage increase based on her Max HP: 1% for her skill and 2% for the burst, and she additionally gets a 20% HP bonus. It’s kind of like having the passive ability of Primordial Jade Cutter without having to equip the weapon itself, which is, as you might have guessed, insanely fucking strong.

C2 increases the duration of her field by six seconds and buffs the first auxiliary attack it does. Nice quality of life improvement that plays into the design space of Dehya’s abilities.

The fourth level restores 2% of her HP and 1.5 Energy to Dehya for each hit of her Elemental Burst, providing her a nice bit of sustain and alleviating some of her Energy Recharge needs, but overall this isn’t amazing. It just makes her a little comfier to play.

Lastly, C6 increase Dehya’s burst CRIT Rate by 10%, its CRIT DMG by 15%, and its duration by 0.5 seconds every time she crits with it. The highest bonuses she can receive are a two second extension of her barrage and 60% CRIT DMG.

My Thoughts

As I mentioned before, I’m really excited for Dehya now. Her kit is really unique, and though has some notable shortcomings as a damage dealer, they’re not enough to sway me at this time. I might write a theorycrafting post about her, if not I’ll still be keeping tabs on her development in the beta. There’s a good chance she’ll be changed beyond just having her numbers adjusted.

InDesign Day 8, Styles and Image Placement.

Today we started on InDesign. In InDesign we can combine both Photoshop and Illustrator images, we can use InDesign to create magazine spreads or books among other things.

Today we started by creating a document, and creating a text box within the margins of the page. (To toggle between workspace and print view you can press W). We added place holder text by going Type -> Fill with Placeholder Text. Pressing escape then V to get into select mode again we selected the text box and using the workspace bar at the top changed the columns to 2.

We started by looking at character styles and paragraph styles, these can be accessed by the Windows -> Styles, on the top tool bar.

Character styles changes the characters that you have selected, you can use this to easily bold or italic your characters. These are applied by selecting the characters and selecting the style you want from the window.

You can add a new character style using the little plus button at the bottom of the window. Double clicking on it will bring up the editable window, in this you can change everything, font family, size, style, colours, etc.

Paragraphs work a little different. A paragraph in InDesign is when return is used when typing, it creates a new paragraph which you are able to edit. Character styles are for changing characters, words or or collections of words within a paragraph, paragraph styles will change the whole paragraph.

We created a new style named Headings, in the basic character formats we changed the font style to bold, and added a leading of 14pt. Leading is the space above the paragraph this gives the look that the heading is for the paragraph below and separate from the one above.

Next we added text we wanted to bullet point. To do this we had to put a carriage return after each piece we wanted bullet pointed. Then we created a new paragraph style and named it bullet point. When editing the style in the bullets and numbering tab you can change the alignment and indents, to set the indent you have to set the left one first, then the first line second as the same number minus to work.

I also made a new paragraph style and called it drop caps. Using the drop caps and nestled styles I added a drop cap on one letter two lines big. This created a cool drop cap on the first letter on the page.

Next we started linking our image of a frog on a log.

InDesign stores images as links, it references the image on the disk. When you change the image file, InDesign will give you the option to update it in the file.

This means that you have to store the images with your InDesign file as well as sending them together.

After we linked our frog image file we placed it into our text. To format the text around the image we used text wrap on the top tool bar when selecting the image. For my frog I made him the size of my column and wrapped the image around the bounding box.

I added two more images of the frog and formatted them differenely.

The first one I resized placed in the first paragraph and added a 3mm right offset to push the text of the boarder of the image.

The second one I put into a circle frame, in InDesign an image consists of an image inside a frame. Instead of having a sqare frame I used a circle. For this image I wrapped the text around the objects shape and placed it in the middle of the page. Because a circle has no left and right, top and bottom sides you can only change the offset around the whole image for this I added 4mm.

Composite Images

Using the object select tool, this is the total selected object of the man. There are some obvious rough edges with the selection where he blended in with the background, such as his top arm which is partially cut off and around his hair which will be very difficult and time-consuming to fix. On the edges where the mistakes are more obvious like the piece jutting out from his leg, we can use the path tool to create an outline with bezier curves and then convert it to a selection to clear these parts.

With the hair, it is essential to make a layer mask in order to brush away the parts of the image that are still showing and to restore some of the parts of the hair which the object select cut out at the start. Using the square bracket keys to adjust the size of the brush and adjusting the hardness in order to get some of the finer edges. Although the process takes a long time, it does make for lots of accuracy and editing onto the layer mask instead of directly onto the image gives the ability to reverse mistakes and bring back parts of the image which might have accidentally been erased. Switching between the black and white layer mask view, the view of just the man on the green background, and an overlay layer which shows the entire original image, allows for us to see parts of the hair we missed, and can serve as a guide to show what we should be brushing.

Final product. Against the bright green background we can see the parts of the image that are slightly transparent around the edge of the hair, giving the impression of strands of hair. Although some strands of the hair look a little rough, once the image is on a detailed background it will not be noticeable.

In the layers tab, we can see that there are two copies of the snake, one above layer of the jumping man, and one behind it. By doing this, and creating a layer mask on the top layer, we are able to use the brush to paint away parts of the top layer to reveal the man underneath. This way, it gives the appearance of the man being behind parts of the snake shape and above other parts of it.

Because we implemented the snake shape as a linked smart object, when we update and edit the snake in illustrator and save it, it updates the appearance of the snake to match in photoshop. We edited the snake to make it more detailed and have a much more stylistic and appealing appearance. Because it is embedded, the only think we need to do is to edit the top layer mask and widen the transparent sections to show the parts of the man that were previously hidden.

Homework Additions:

In total, all of the additions made accounted for all of the new layers shown above. Toby mentioned something about bowling in class, so I decided to take the idea of bowling and make a scene out of it. To me, the snake looked a bit like a backwards S, which I figured could stand for strike or something similar. This gave me the idea to flip the current composition, which gave the impression of the jumping man looking like he was throwing something over his shoulder. This something in my mind could only be a bowling ball. I created a bowling ball vector in illustrator and embedded it into the photoshop composition. Same idea with the bowling pin which was the next addition. That covered the two vectors required for the homework, so I decided to start adding some pixel images to supplement the scene. I started with the flame behind the bowling ball, which should hopefully give the impression that this man is a god-like bowler. The flames gave somewhat of an evil look to the picture, so I figured there should be someone in the composition to reflect this atmosphere of fear. I added the business man to the image and used the object select tool with some slight additions from the polygonal lasso tool to remove his background, and gave him a shadow using an imbedded illustrator vector. The man needed some slight curve and saturation adjustment in order to get his lighting a little more similar to the other mans. The next edition was the classic wii bowling "Strike!" banner, which I had to also remove the background on. For this I used the colour range selection option to grab the white background which the word was on and touched it up with just the rectangle marquee tool to add or remove some pixels which the colour range select had missed. The next addition was the dotted line, which I created using the pen tool and the stroke edit window which has a "dotted line" feature which could be useful in the future. Finally it was the background image which I found online, although it was in a much more widescreen aspect ration than what would fit the photoshop outline. Because of this, I had to add a section at the top of the image using a selection and a colour-picked fill. I then used the smudge tool to drag the lighting from at the top of the image upwards over colour filled area, and then blurred the area to make it blend a little better. The original image also had a blue bowling ball going down the right side of the middle lane which I had to remove by copying a section of the left side of the lane, flipping it, and covering up the ball. It ended up a little rough but the imperfections happened to be hidden by the S and jumping feller so I didn't worry about it too much.

In reflection, although the image obviously doesn't look professional or even remotely realistic, I had a good time creating it and actually feel like I learnt a lot. Because of the scattered nature of the composition, it gave me lots of chances to try different things and experiment, all of which taught me new things about both photoshop and illustrator.
