The Haunting of Seacliff Inn (1994)
My rating: 5/10
Bog standard made for TV haunted house movie, though one of the (uncommonly horny) ghosts does show her tits for a bit, so it's definitely one that was shown later at night.

Books I Read in 2023
* = Re-read
Check out past years: 2012, 2013 (skipped), 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Follow me on Goodreads to get these reviews as they happen.
1) A Book of Blades: Rogues in the House Presents edited by L.D. Whitney
This book, assembled by the great guys behind the premier podcast in the genre, is an excellent way to sample a breadth of contemporary Sword & Sorcery fiction!
My favorite story was "The Blood of Old Shard" by John R. Fultz, with Scott Oden and Howard Andrew Jones' tales close behind, and there were no duds in the mix. "The Blood..." really surprised me with a heart and inventiveness which the opening doesn't give away yet, you realize upon finishing, deftly sets up.
2) Fires of Azeroth by C.J. Cherryh
Left my big ol’ spoiler-laden review on Goodreads for ya.
3) Black Paper: Writing in a Dark Time by Teju Cole
4) The Citadel of Forgotten Myths by Michael Moorcock
*5) Neuromancer by William Gibson
6) The Expert System's Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky
7) The Expert System’s Champion by Adrian Tchaikovsky
I confess I finished the first book in this series having enjoyed myself, but wondering if I'd remember what I'd read a year from now.
I don't have that concern with its follow-up. Tchaikovsky has enriched the world he set up in the first installment quite nicely, and I hope I get to explore it further in a third.
8) Old Moon Quarterly: Issue 3
9) Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner
10) The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday by Saad Z. Hossain
11) The Dreamthief's Daughter: A Tale of the Albino by Michael Moorcock
12) Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino
Do you think you’d enjoy hearing Tarantino discuss mainly his childhood and adolescence re: movies that meant a lot to him during that period? Congrats, this is extremely that. It could not be more that.
13) The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe
14) Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life After Which Everything Was Different by Chuck Palahniuk
Roughly 70/30 instructional / biographical. Has a lot of good advice, focusing on a more literary mode than classic genre stylings, all in a voice and coming from a place any Palahniuk fan will be familiar with (I would have been stunned NOT to find something like the "Voice of Authority" snippet in a writing book by Palahniuk).
Entertaining and providing what mostly felt like useful, actionable advice, I'd say it can be handy for writers who aren't knowledgeable of the author's works, but knowing at least a couple of his books can help contextualize his advice so you can determine which parts are right for you or not.
15) Death Angel's Shadow by Karl Edward Wagner
16) Night Winds by Karl Edward Wagner
17) Wyngraf Issue #1 Edited by Nathaniel Webb
18) Rakefire and Other Stories by Jason Ray Carney
19) The White Lion by Scott Oden
20) Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts by Patrick Syme, Abraham Gottlob Werner
(Illustrator)
21) Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin
22) Lord of a Shattered Land by Howard Andrew Jones
*23) Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
24) Authority by Jeff VanderMeer
25) Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer
*26) The Sailor on the Seas of Fate by Michael Moorcock
27) Kundo Wakes Up by Saad Z. Hossain
28) Swords in the Shadows, Edited by Cullen Bunn
29) The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi
30) Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World by Naomi Klein
31) The Encyclopedia of Amazons: Women Warriors from Antiquity to the Modern Era by Jessica Amanda Salmonson

RENFIELD (2023)
Starring Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Nicolas Cage, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Brandon Scott Jones, Jenna Kanell, Bess Rous, James Moses Black, Caroline Williams, Miles Doleac, Danya LaBelle, Rhonda Johnson Dents, Christopher Matthew Cook, Michael P. Sullivan, Rosha Washington, James Moses Black and T.C. Matherne.
Screenplay by Ryan Ridley.
Directed by Benjamin Millepied.
Distributed by Universal Pictures. 93 minutes. Rated R.
In general I have never liked comedies that used horror and violence to gain laughs.
So color me surprised that I have actually kind of liked three insanely violent but wonderfully goofy comedies in the past six months. Violent Night, Cocaine Bear and now Renfield are actually pretty decent comedies. And while still I could have lived without much of the bloody mayhem, it almost worked in context of the films.
The violence in Renfield is silly and cartoonish, almost like an old Looney Tunes cartoon, if Looney Tunes trafficked in frequent dismemberments and buckets of blood.
Renfield is another one of those films that look at a classic tale from the point of view of a supporting character. This style was big like 10-15 years ago (Maleficent, Mirror Mirror) and do tend to open new insights into very well-known, staid literary classics.
The hero – well sort of hero – here is Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), the familiar who serves the legendary vampire Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage).
The high concept of the film is that it must be a bummer to work for such a mean, heartless, vindictive and violent boss as Dracula. Add to that you don’t particularly enjoy the work (collecting victims), the contract is binding and eternal and the pay kind of sucks. It seems like the ultimate HR disaster.
On the plus side, you do get days off.
To make things even a little more off-the-wall, Renfield takes place in modern-day New Orleans, adding organized crime, corrupt cops and self-help groups into the gumbo.
Therefore, Renfield joins a support group for people who can’t stand up for themselves to bullies. Of course, there is an ulterior motive to this move – not only does Renfield want to come to terms with his indentured servitude to his cruel boss, but also, he figures that some of the victimizers that are terrorizing his groupmates would also make for good meals for Dracula. It seemed like a win-win.
Of course, nothing ever works as planned.
Dracula uses his ward’s crisis to further hurt the guy and kill off most of the people that Renfield has come to care for. Thus the befuddled familiar must come up with an extreme way of giving notice of resignation.
Cage has an unhinged hoot as the master of darkness, a role which he has flirted with occasionally for decades. (See also: Vampire’s Kiss.) It’s a perfect role for him, and honestly when he is on screen, he sucks all of the energy out of everyone and everything else going on around him.
Hoult has fun making Renfield incredibly solicitous, except for when he becomes a one-man wrecking crew. However, even when he is killing, he does it oddly politely. Awkwafina is fine as a parking cop who wants to bring down the crime family that killed her decorated cop dad, and when she can’t do it legally, she joins Renfield in mowing the bad guys down. She is funny, but honestly, it’s nothing she hasn’t done before, and done better.
Renfield is not a great film, but as a short (93 minutes) and flashy distraction, it’s actually surprisingly funny much of the time. And while I still find the blood and guts excessive, it’s still worth the watch, as long as you have a relatively strong stomach.

Good Mourning,
All that we see or seem is but a cemetery within a cemetery, or whatever Edgar Allan Poe said. Fast growing as the sycamore, Indianapolis developed and stretched its branches outward, replacing small residential areas with industrial parks. Nestled amongst the residential areas were not only homes, but the family burial plots along with them. In an effort to preserve the smaller pioneering cemeteries, lost to time and industrialization. The Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhoads Cemetery, and Wright-Whitesell-Gentry Cemetery were relocated to the Pioneer Cemetery within Crown Hill, each grave dug the same way they were originally by hand.
The Greenlawn Cemetery, established in 1821 was the first cemetery known to exist in Indianapolis, originally located near the White River on the southwest end of Kentucky Avenue. In the year of 1912, over 1,160 pioneers originally buried in Greenlawn Cemetery were moved to Crown Hill. This memorial honors these original citizens of Indianapolis including Colonel Aaron C. Johnson, former Sheriff of Fayette Co. Ohio, Veteran of the War of 1812, Sarah A. Baker, Clarence Cooper, Craighead (four unknown), Mary Francis Cunningham, John Given, W.D., Barbara and Sarah Hanch, Nancy F., Julia P., Infant John and George Hollands, David, Martha R., Mary, John, Moses, John, Rebecca A. Margaret, Martha A. and infants Hunter, John W. and Wife, James M. Johnson, Lawson (two unknown), Lewis (one unknown), Benjamin Orr, Eli, Elizabeth and Mary I. Petticord, George Porter, Phillip, Jenny and one unknown Sponable, Iane and Minnie Wallace, Abner S. West and Benjamin Yates.
Wright-Whitesell-Gentry Cemetery, established in 1841. Originally a small cemetery located on the Wright family farm in Lawrence Township. In 2008, twelve adults, fourteen children and seven infants were reburied in their final resting place within Crown Hill Cemetery. Members of the Wright family, headed by the Reverend James T. Wright, founder of the church now known as Castleton United Methodist Church, and extended family members of the Whitesell, Gentry, Easterday and Gates families were buried in the small cemetery with the last burial taking place in 1905. Also interred is Civil War Private John W. Gentry, who served in the 26th Indiana, Co. "I" from March of 1864 until it was disbanded in January 1866.
Much like the Greenlawn Cemetery and Wright-Whitesell-Gentry Cemetery, the Rhoads Cemetery was a small cemetery established in 1844. In 1999, twelve adults and thirty-four children of the Rhoads, Rude, Foster, Foltz and Johns families were buried at their final resting site within Crown Hill. Among the identified burials are James Rhoads, died - 1844, Hanna Rhoads died - 1849, Sarah Rhoads died 1857, John Rhoads died - 1860, Emma Rude died - 1862, Willian Rude died - 1866 and William Rhoads died - 1906.
Monday Mournings are in loving memory of the dearly departed. By exploring their burial sites we can connect to their lives, continuing to honor their memory so they will not be lost to time. Memento Mori.
Rest In Peace,
Mori 🥀
