Zombie Halloween
A little late but here is a short story of Kai-chan and Shin-chan.
Summary: Kaito wants to cheer up the younger generation with Halloween candy and Trick and Treat. So, Kaito and Shinichi went hunting for good chocolate candy. (It was a long shot after six years.) Happy Hunting as they also track down the Black Organization member, code name Kahlua, that was responsible for the zombie virus outbreak.
“You want to do what?” asked Shinichi, staring at Kaito in disbelief. “Are you losing your mind?”
“I’m perfectly sane, thank you,” grinned Kaito. “What’s wrong with trick or treating? Halloween needs to be celebrated. It’s like Christmas before Christmas but with candy only.”
“For children,” said Shinichi. “On top of that, how would we even celebrate it? It’s not like we can go outside and trick or treat. There are zombies out there ready to kill us.”
Kaito frowned. It was true that the zombies outside made it impossible to actually participate in Halloween. Then there was the trouble of the candy. Kaito doubted factories were still making candy. It has been almost two months since the breakout actually took over Tokyo. He would have to do some recon.
“Nobody said it had to be done outside,” said Kaito as a plan formed in his mind. “All we need is the candy and it can be done here. After all, everyone has their own rooms. The younger kids can trick or treat while the adults hand out candy. Of course, the adults can keep some candy for themselves.”
Shinichi frowned as he thought that over. It could work. It might also cheer up the younger ones. Their childhood had been taken from them. This zombie apocalypse took that from them. Shinichi hated to see Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko depressed. Kaito and Shinichi had been trying to keep their spirits up as much as possible.
However, all their training in survival skills made it hard to lift up their spirits. Ran, Kaito, Shinichi, Heiji, Kazuha, and everyone else tried their best. If Kaito could put together a safe plan that found them good candy, then maybe it could work. Shinichi looked at Kaito as the young man formed a plan. Shinichi waited until it was finished.
“Factories might have non-spoiled candies they were finishing up or were ready to be delivered,” said Kaito. “We should google where some factories are located. We raid them to see what we can find. If we could haul an entire truck back, we could freeze some of the candy to keep it from going bad.”
“And what about your promise to make it a hunting date?” asked Shinichi. “We still need to hunt down that Organization member, Kahlua, so Haibara can create a cure or a vaccine to protect the rest of the people of Japan.”
“I know,” said Kaito. “Who says we can’t do both at the same time? We can make it into a two or three-day date, just the two of us as we hunt for Kahlua and candy.”
“You get to inform our parents,” stated Shinichi walking away.
“Do I have to?” whined Kaito. “Shinichi, don’t make me face them alone.”
“Call it punishment for changing our date,” said Shinichi as he left the room.
If Kaito wanted to search for Kahlua and candy, he would need to prepare for it. Shinichi went to the weapon’s room. He grabbed a large empty bag and set it down on a table. Mitsuhiko looked up from his spot tinkering with an upgrade to a scope. He watched Shinichi for a few minutes as Shinichi gathered two long-ranged sniper rifles, two assault rifles, and four short-ranged 9mm pistols.
“Where are you going Shinichi-niisan?” asked Mitsuhiko.
“Kaito wants to go on a three-day date out hunting for an organization member,” said Shinichi.
He figured the candy for Halloween should be a surprise. He grabbed four magazines and started loading them with bullets. Shinichi noted they were running low on that particular gun model bullets. They might need to hit another gun store or factory while they were out too. It could extend their trip as well. Hunting for gun equipment was dangerous and difficult.
“I don’t see how you can call that a date,” said Mitsuhiko. “I’d rather stay in the underground garden for a date than hunt for an organization member out with the zombies.”
“It’s not my idea of a date,” said Shinichi with a shrug of his shoulders. “We can’t be picky about how we spend our dates. The idea of a date is to spend quality alone time with your partner. When we go out alone to hunt for something or another, it is just us spending time together. Just not the typical date.”
‘That makes sense,” said Mitsuhiko. “It has been hard to find alone time with Ai-chan. There is almost always someone around.”
“You should try hunting for supplies with Haibara one time,” said Shinichi. “She knows how to handle a gun and ride motorcycles.”
“Maybe,” said Mitsuhiko.
He went back to tinkering with the scope in front of him. Shinichi knew he gave the young teen a lot to think about. He hated thinking about how their lives had changed six years ago. It was normal for many of the surviving humans to not leave their safehouse unless they needed supplies.
Shinichi knew they were lucky enough that their safehouse was huge and had amassed over eighty people living in it. People were always going out for supply runs. This allowed the younger generation to stay safely hidden away inside. The normal now was working to keep the safehouse going even at the age of ten.
Those under ten didn’t work. Not that there were many children under the age of ten, right now. Those that had been teens six years ago were now adults busy with keeping the safehouse running or doing supply runs. The safehouse didn’t need too many supplies from the outside anymore.
The safehouse made or produced most of the food, clothing, and other items that were necessary for living. Nowadays, supply runs were for materialistic items that one could live without. Such as fiction books to read, games to play, writing materials, posters, collectible toys, dolls, and anything else one held an interest in.
Shinichi finished packing and took the bag to their room. He headed up to the actual house to find Kaito. He needed to speak to Haibara about medicine as well as a checkup to see how he was doing. Shinichi knew he needed to keep his health up to keep the zombie virus at bay. He wished Haibara could make a cure already but she needed another sample.
Kaito grumbled as he walked to the surveillance and recon room. This was the place that both Shinichi and Kaito’s parents spent most of their time. Yusaku-san and Oyaji worked to design items they could make to help monitor the safehouse or use to do supply runs or recon missions.
Yukiko-chan and Kaasan normally took turns watching the surveillance surrounding the house. Zombies sometimes got too close to the safehouse and needed to be taken care of by sniper rifles that were silenced. Activity above the safehouse was limited to keep zombies away. Kaito knew both of their parents were overprotective of their children and made it hard sometimes.
“Kai-chan,” shouted Yukiko-chan as she wrapped him up in a hug. It wasn’t like they hadn’t seen each other for days. They ate breakfast together that morning.
“Yukiko-san, please let go, can’t breath,” said Kaito as he tried not to struggle.
“Ah, sorry,” said Yukiko-chan letting him go. ‘What brings you up top?”
“I noted that the younger teens and kids are depressed as Halloween approaches,” spoke Kaito. He knew the entire room was listening even if no one else looked his way. “I want to do something about that. I thought if Shinichi and I could find some non-spoiled candy for them to trick or treat in the safehouse might cheer them up. We would need to leave tomorrow morning though.”
“Kai-chan is so thoughtful,” gushed Yukiko-chan. “But didn’t you two just return from a recon mission yesterday night?”
“Yes,” answered Kaito.
“Isn’t it too soon to leave again?” asked Kaasan not looking away from the surveillance monitors.
“Perhaps, but Halloween is in five days,” said Kaito. “If I want to do this, I need to start as soon as possible.”
“We are running low on ammo,” spoke Yusaku-san. “All other teams are out on different supply runs. It might be good to send them out.”
“Besides, dear,” spoke Oyaji. “Kaito and Shinichi were planning a recon date for Halloween. This change of plans means their date will be sooner and they will be home for Halloween. We don’t know how the survivors are going to act on Halloween. They’ll be safe.”
“I suppose that is true,” said Kaasan.
“But, but I don’t want Shin-chan to leave again so soon,” Yukiko-chan said with tears welling up in her eyes.
“Yukiko,” said Yusaku-san. “Our children are grown and do not need your permission to leave. Kaito only told us about this change in their plans out of courtesy. They’ll be back before you know it.”
“Fine,” huffed Yukiko-chan. She pointed a finger at Kaito. “If he returns with so much as a scratch on him, I will make you eat FISH.”
“Kaasan, do not use that against him,” spoke Shinichi as he walked into the room. ‘Using his phobia against him is childish.”
“But Shin-chan, you could get hurt,” whined Yukiko-chan.
“Risks have to be taken if I am to be cured of this virus,” said Shinichi. “Besides, Kaito and I have rarely been hurt on our outings in the last four years. We know what we are doing. Trust us.”
“Just be careful,” said Yukiko-chan pulling Shinichi into a tight hug.
Shinichi returned the hug before he wiggled out of her hold. He grabbed Kaito’s hand and the two of them left the room. Shinichi pulled Kaito along the hallway to the stairway to the safehouse. They walked in silence to Haibara’s lab. She spent most of her days inside of the lab. If she wasn’t in the lab, she was in the shooting range or with Mitsuhiko.
Kaito knocked on her lab door before presenting her with a flower as the two of them walked into the room. Haibara glared at the flower but took the flower to place it inside of a vase she had on her desk. Kaito and Mitsuhiko were always giving her flowers to soften her mood. Kaito did it for Shinichi, as seeing him upsets her most of the time.
“Bed,” said Haibara.
Shinichi sat down on the bed. He hated these checkups. He always felt uncomfortable during them. He took off his shirt. Haibara listened to his heartbeat before his lungs. She drew some blood to look under the microscope. Kaito leaned against the door leading into the lab. That way no one could walk in on this private checkup.
“How have you been feeling?” asked Haibara.
“Honestly, I’ve had a headache since yesterday morning,” Shinichi answered. “It’s not a massive headache but a dull one behind my eyes. It doesn’t bother me while I’m awake unless staring at a screen for too long. I slept without being disturbed last night.”
“Your skin is slightly cold,” commented Kaito. “Like you are retained the bare minimum amount of heat to function.”
“Signs that the medicine you are currently taking are losing their effectiveness,” sighed Haibara. “I’ve prepared a new dosage for you. I cannot say how long this one will last.”
“At least the last one lasted two years,” said Shinichi.
“The first one lasted four years,” frowned Haibara. “That means its effectiveness was cut by half. If this one follows the same pattern, it will only last a year. The next one will last half a year, then three months, then fifteen days, and so on. So by this estimate, only two years left before you will succumb to this virus.”
“That isn’t a lot of time,” frowned Kaito. “We need to hurry up and find Kahlua.”
“That’s why we are leaving tomorrow morning for another recon mission,” said Shinichi.
“You should not stress your body out,” said Haibara. “Taking on too many missions back to back will negatively affect your health.”
“I know,” said Shinichi. “I promise after this mission, I’ll take it easy for a month with no missions or supply runs.”
“Two months,” said Haibara. “Not a day sooner.”
“Deal,” said Shinichi.
He was glad it wasn’t longer. Haibara would keep her word and stop him from leaving by any means necessary. Kaito accepted the deal. Though Shinichi knew Kaito didn’t have to accept it. Kaito wasn’t the one that would be grounded. He could still go on missions and supply runs with others but Kaito never went with others unless Shinichi was there too.
“Thanks Haibara,” said Kaito.
Haibara handed Shinichi a new pill bottle full of his new pills. Kaito pulled Shinichi from the room and they headed to their room. It was time to pack what they would need for their trip. The two spent the rest of the day preparing for the trip, searching for factories nearby or delivery trucks or truck gas stations.
Kaito’s KID gun, two packs of cards, several smoke bombs, a bunch of noise makers, and sever 10ft wires. A flashlight, batteries, old clothes that were turned into rags, and a few small pocket mirrors to see around corners. They gather enough non-perishable foods with matchsticks so they can cook food while out.
With a solid plan, the two woke early the next morning and headed out. Heiji was on surveillance duty. He let them out of the gate. Shinichi saluted Heiji as Kaito drove the motorcycle with a sidecar away from their safehouse. Shinichi had his gun out, ready to shoot the zombies.
They spent almost an entire day driving to their first destination. Shinichi had already used up one magazine on the trip. Kaito had tried to avoid as many as possible but Shinichi still had to shoot nine of them in the head. The truck gas station was abandoned. Shinichi jumped off as Kaito killed the engine.
He moved to check inside the gas station to see if any zombies were hanging around. They did not want any surprises while they searched the cargo from the trucks. He knew Kaito would be looking around the other side of the building. The two worked in silence to secure the station before making their way to the nearest rig.
“Let’s see what we got,” said Kaito.
Shinichi took up a guard post to keep Kaito safe while he searched the rig. Kaito opened up the rig and climbed inside. He looked around, reading the labels to see if they held a hint to what was inside of them. He pried three of them open to find purses, wallets, and handbags. He leaped from that truck and motioned Shinichi to move on to the next rig.
By the time they searched all the rigs at that gas station, it was almost time for them to camp for the night. The gas station was a bust. It had no candy. They would move on in the morning. One of the rigs had a cabin in the back that they could use. Kaito set up their defenses as Shinichi fixed them up something to eat.
“Sorry for dragging you out on this run,” said Kaito once he was done setting up their perimeter.
“There is nothing for you to apologize for,” said Shinichi. “It’s not like we have many places to go for our dates.”
“True,” said Kaito.
Kaito leaned in for a kiss. Shinichi gave him one before returning to the meal he was cooking. It was a simple meal of cooked potted meat, green beans, and rice. Shinichi wished they could make better, healthier meals but the food was something they had to ration out. The two shared a cozy meal before enjoying some adult time together.
In the morning, they ate a quick meal before packing up everything. Kaito broke down their perimeter. They headed for their next spot which was a factory. Kaito had found a factory on the outskirts of Kyoto that made several different kinds of chocolate candies. When they arrived near the factory, they hid on top of a hill to scope the place out.
Kaito and Shinichi both took out binoculars to view the area inside of the factory fence. They needed to know what they were dealing with before heading inside. It could be dangerous if they didn’t reduce the threat to them. Shinichi didn’t want to think about what could be waiting for them inside of the factory itself.
“This won’t be an easy clear-out,” said Kaito. He was perched on a rock.
“Might have to get up close and personal to clear it out,” said Shinichi. “Ther’s too many for the sniper rifles to take out based on the amount of ammo I brought. We were already low on 9mm pistol rounds. So, I wouldn’t recommend those either.”
“I’ve brought 6 10ft wires,” said Kaito. “The KID gun, two decks of cards, several smoke bombs, and a bunch of noisemakers. Do you think that will be enough?”
“Should be,” said Shinichi. “Just remember to wipe off the blood using cloth and avoid getting it into your eyes and mouth. Don’t want you getting infected.”
“I’ll be careful,” Kaito said as he slid off the rock. He leaned down to meet Shinichi for a quick kiss before heading down the hill. “Keep them off me.”
“Always,” said Shinichi.
He got to work setting up a sniper rifle and placed the ammo close by. He had to be quick. Kaito depended on him. He took a deep breath, aimed, and fired the first round. One by one, Shinichi picked off the zombies he could see. Once he spotted Kaito, he started taking out those around him that Kaito didn’t have eyes on.
About ten minutes later, Kaito gave the all-clear. Shinichi packed up the rifle and magazines, keeping ones with ammo separate. He headed for Kaito’s position. Shinichi hated killing the zombies but he knew they were no longer human. All zombies thought about was eating those that were not zombies.
Kaito climbed onto the container near a bay door. Shinichi went to open the bay doors hatch to the building. The door opened loudly. Kaito placed his hand down for Shinichi. He ran and jumped towards the container. He grabbed Kaito’s hand and finished the climb up with his help. Kaito gave Shinichi a wire to use.
Kaito took aim. The both of them waited. The loud noise would have attracted any nearby zombies. They had to wait for them to appear. The zombies appeared one at a time. Kaito took out each one that appeared until there was only one left. Shinichi dropped the wire into a loop down to neck level and waited. The last zombie walked into the loop. Shinichi pulled.
The zombie was picked up into the air struggling. The neck snapped easily from the decay. Shinichi watched the head fall to the floor. Kaito handed him a cloth to use to clean the wire from the infected blood. He tossed the cloth away. Shinichi couldn’t be infected again but Kaito and everyone back at their base could become infected. He would never put them at risk.
“We should be careful going in,” said Shinichi.
“We don’t know what we will find inside,” agreed Kaito.
The two made their way inside. It was dark further into the factory. Shinichi turned on his wrist flashlight. Kaito pulled out a flashlight. The two went deeper into the darkness. They found several packaged crates. Kaito went to one and Shinichi went to another. They worked as silently as they could to open the crates.
Shinichi found melted candy bars still in their wrappings. These were no good. The heat melted the chocolate and destroyed its form. That made their expiration date happen quicker. The candy might have survived if it had been in a refrigerated truck or a refrigerated room, like a freezer. Perhaps, they could find one that was still running somehow.
“No good on my end,” said Shinichi walking up to Kaito. “How about you?”
“Nothing,” said Kaito, his lips pulled down. He ran a hand through his hair, resisting the urge to lash out. “This might turn out to be a bust.”
“Let’s not rule it out until we have checked everywhere,” said Shinichi. “This place should have huge refrigerators used as freezers with generators in case of a power failure.”
“Do you think that is possible?” asked Kaito, eyes widening.
“It’s a long shot,” answered Shinichi.
“If all else fails,” spoke Kaito following Shinichi deeper into the factory. “We could learn how to make chocolate ourselves. That way, we wouldn’t have to worry about finding stale or expired ones.”
“The shipping containers might still be cold too,” said Shinichi.
“Your obsession with chocolate is as bad as my obsession with coffee,” said Shinichi.
“Won’t deny it,” said Kaito. “It’s too bad we’ve run out of both.” His voice went up slightly in pitch as he said it.
“Do you hear that?” asked Shinichi. “Sounds like humming.”
“Let’s check it out,” said Kaito.
He pulled out his card gun as he picked up the pace. A grin was on his face. He almost couldn’t contain his excitement at possibly finding good chocolate. They arrived in an area with the lights on. Shinichi walked up to the generator to inspect it. It was spliced to the power. This was not the original generator.
Someone else had been here. Someone that was keeping it running. Shinichi looked around the area. They would have to be careful. Kaito stood before the huge door leading to a walk-in freezer. It was cold underneath his touch. Kaito couldn’t wait to open it to see what was inside of it. Shinichi moved to stand beside Kaito.
“It’s cold,” said Kaito. “Now we need to figure out how to move the contents inside without spoiling it.”
“Kaito,” said Shinichi. The low deadly tone caused Kaito to stand up straight as he searched their surroundings. “Someone has been keeping this generator going. We should hide and wait to see what we are dealing with here.”
“Up there,” Kaito pointed to a four-story storage rack that had long boxes with covers on them.
It would be the perfect place for them to hide. The two of them climbed their way to the top. Kaito readied the KID gun while Shinichi set up the sniper rifle. They would not be taking any chances. If the people turned out to be hostile, they would injure them so they could not fight against the two of them. Disarming was their goal.
It took about two hours for the campers to reveal themselves. The first one was an older man that was bald, Shinichi recognized him as the murderer, Takanori Sewa, someone he had placed behind bars. The second was another murderer, named Kosuke Mimata, another one he had placed behind bars. They must have escaped jail together.
“Man, I can’t believe we have to live in such a place,” said Mimata.
“It’s better than that prison and the outside world,” said Sewa. “At least here we have zombie guards and chocolate.”
“It seems whoever killed those zombies outside hasn’t broken into the freezer yet,” spoke Mimata.
He was inspecting the huge door Kaito had stood in front of earlier. Shinichi noted that Mimata had a pistol tucked beneath his shirt. These people would recognize him as Kudo Shinichi, the one that pointed out their guilt and testified to place them in prison. Kaito looked almost like him, they might think he changed his hairstyle since they last saw him.
“Trouble,” whispered Kaito.
Shinichi nodded his head. They needed to be careful about how this was done. One was armed but both killed for their own stupid reasons. He didn’t want either of them getting hurt. Kaito quickly changed his hairstyle and made his way back down the storage rack. Kaito made his way to the area, stepping into the light.
“I killed those zombies,” said Kaito, his accent different from both of their voices. “I thought this might be a good place to hide for the night.”
“Who are you?” asked Mimata. He pulled his gun from behind his back.
“Kaito,” said Kaito. “I’m traveling through the area, trying to head south. Nothing really left in the north.”
“Why did you pick this factory?” asked Mimata.
“Cause it might contain good chocolate,” said Kaito. “I miss eating chocolate.”
“You cannot have any of it,” said Sewa. “It’s ours. Leave this place at once.”
“Just put the gun down and I’ll leave,” said Kaito.
“Not a chance,” said Mimata. “I’ll end you before I do that.”
Kaito moved his hands up into an ‘I surrender’ gesture. Shinichi took a deep breath, aimed, and shot a bullet round. The bullet struck Mimata’s hand holding the run. He dropped it. Kaito moved. He caught the gun and aimed it at Mimata’s head. The two criminals froze. Kaito moved around so that he could see both of them at the same time.
“Should have asked if I was alone or not,” Kaito said with a small upturn of his lips.
Shinichi made it down and into the light. Both criminals were surprised to see him. Kaito could see the anger and hate in the criminal’s eyes for his boyfriend. Not that they could do anything about it. Shinichi had a pistol in one hand and the sniper rifle over a shoulder. He stopped walking once beside Kaito.
“I can’t believe they survived this long,” said Shinichi.
“Luck must have been on their side,” said Kaito. “It’s just run out though. How unlucky for them.”
“Tie them up,” said Shinichi. “We don’t have all day to hang around here. The rig at the spot we entered through should be good for us to use to transport the chocolate back to our base. Don’t worry, we’ll leave you two alive and free once we are done.”
Kaito had them tied up in seconds and the door to the freezer open not long after. The crates inside were small enough for them to carry but the distance was large. While Kaito shifted through the crates, Shinichi left to find a trolley or a fork lift that worked. He didn’t want to be there all day.
Shinichi found a large trolley they could use and brought it back to Kaito. The two set to work to move the small crates onto the trolley. After a hundred crates were on the trolley, the two pushed it to the rig. Shinichi started loading the rigs shipping container. Kaito got into the driver side and searched for the keys.
Kaito smiled as a set of keys fell into his hands from the visor. He turned the key in the ignition just enough to see how much gas it had. It was a full tank. He took the keys with him as he made his way to help Shinichi. It was their lucky day. Kaito knew they could even fit the motorcycle they rode here into the rigs cabin area.
“How did it look?” asked Shinichi.
“Full tank of gas,” said Kaito. “It will get us home. Our next target will take us a roundabout way home but it should all be good.”
“Good,” said Shinichi.
The two worked quickly to load as many crates as they could. Kaito went to get the motorcycle while Shinichi went to deal with the criminals. Shinichi wouldn’t leave them tied up, but he took the gun with him. Mimata and Sewa would be able to find more guns and continue to fight another day. Shinichi wasn’t worried.
Shinichi joined Kaito in the rig. It was time to go. Kaito had a huge grin plastered to his face. He was excited for the young ones and himself. There was enough chocolate to last a year or two if they ate it frugally. Shinichi wished they had found coffee too. That would have made his day.
Kaito drove them toward the compound Shinichi where he had been held prisoner six years ago. The place was mainly abandoned except for the walking dead. Every other month or so, the two would travel here and take out zombies as they hunted for Kailua. The scientist that was responsible for the zombie outbreak.
So far, they hadn’t found her. Shinichi was grateful the zombies inside of the compound couldn’t get out. Their search would have been next to impossible if that was the case. If they could bring back the dead body of Kailua, Haibara would be able to create a cure for Shinichi. He wouldn’t be infected anymore.
“Today is the day,” said Kaito. “I just know it.”
“Don’t get your hopes up,” said Shinichi. “I don’t want them to be crushed.” Shinichi never allowed his hopes to rise. “If we get her, we get her. That is all there is to it.”
“I know,” Kaito dropped his smile. “I don’t want to lose you to this virus. It would kill me if I had to shoot you.”
“You don’t have to be the one to do it,” said Shinichi. Someone else can shoot me if the need to arises.”
“Never,” said Kaito. “I’ll never allow anyone else to harm you even if you became a zombie. I love you too much for that. If you turn, I’ll end you then myself because I can’t live without you.”
“Kaito,” Shinichi felt his voice wavering as he choked back tears.
Kaito stopped the truck. He pulled Shinichi to him. The two kissed softly, lovingly as their emotions ran high. Kaito hadn’t meant to make Shinichi cry, but these conversations needed to happen often. They had to be on the same page. They were in this together. Forever.
Kaito pulled away, wiping away Shinichi’s tears. He pulled Shinichi closer to him. Shinichi cuddled against Kaito as he started driving again. They were making good time on the road. Kaito had to get creative to keep the rig on the road. Shinichi watched the road, trying to gain control of his emotions again.
Kaito stopped a few feet from the compound. They moved silently as they prepared to take out some zombies. There were not many left inside the compound after six years of picking them off. Kaito would be using the noisemakers to draw them out. It was time to take out some zombies.
Shinichi set up on the rig's roof with the sniper rifle and the last of the ammo. Kaito made his way inside the compound to plant the timed noisemakers. Once those were set he climbed on top of a roof and waited with the last cards for his KID gun. Slowly zombies trickled out of the open compound doors.
Shinichi used the scope to look at them. He noticed one of them did not have wounds. He grinned. They finally found her, code name, Kahlua. Shinichi shot her first. The two picked off the rest of them. When the last one fell, Shinichi breathed a sigh of relief. They had what they needed for Haibara to create a cure for him.
Kaito met him on the ground. Shinichi headed to the dead short black haired woman that had a single gunshot wound upon her body. Kaito had a long sheet and gloves. The two put the gloves on before moving the dead body onto the sheet. They were not as gentle as they could have been.
“This one?” Kaito asked to make sure.
“Yes,” answered Shinichi. “I remember her well. She is also the only one that doesn’t have any other wounds besides the one in her head. She is the source of the virus. The one that created it. The one that infected me.”
“Let’s head home,” said Kaito.
“Yeah,” said Shinichi.
The two hauled her on top of the rig, securing her body to the roof. Haibara was going to be happy. The younger ones were going to be happy. Shinichi and Kaito were happy. Everything was looking up. There was a light at the end of the tunnel. The ride back to the safe house was happier.
The rig was stopped a couple of streets away. The noise of the rig would draw zombies. They had to be safe. Kaito radioed the safe house to inform them they needed help to haul in their goods. Several adults made their way to the rig. It took a few hours but eventually the goods were inside.
“What did you go get?” asked Heiji.
“Chocolate that needs to go into the freezer,” said Kaito. “It’s for Halloween.”
“Good idea,” said Heiji. “They’ll love it. What about the body?”
“That’s Kahlua,” said Shinichi. “She’s for Haibara.”
“About time you caught her,” said Heiji.
“She was difficult to find,” agreed Shinichi.
~
A knock on their door had Kaito smiling as he opened the door. There stood Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko. The three had big smiles on their faces and baskets almost full of candy. Each one had a costume on. Kaito was dressed up too. Shinichi was sitting in a chair by the door. He had to take it easy.
“Trick or treat,” said Genta.
“Happy Halloween,” said Mitsuhiko.
“Hello Kaito-niisan, Shinichi-niisan,” said Ayumi.
“Happy Halloween,” said Kaito and Shinichi.
Kaito gave them each some candy before shooting them away. They were their last expected visitors for the night. Kaito leaned down to kiss Shinichi on the lips. It was a good night. The adults had been happy to help them. The younger ones were happy for some type of normalcy.
“You did good,” said Shinichi.
“We did good,” said Kaito.
A knock on their door drew them apart. Kaito opened the door and Haibara stood on the other side. Kaito invited her inside.she stepped into the room, her face giving away nothing. Neither knew why she was there but they were happy to see her.
“Candy?” offered Kaito.
“No thank you,” said Haibara. “The body you gave me was well preserved. I should have a cure within a few weeks. Hopefully.”
“That’s great news,” grinned Kaito.
“Thank you,” said Shinichi.
“Don’t thank me yet,” said Haibara. “This will be untested and could kill you instead.”
“A risk I am willing to take,” said Shinichi.
“I can’t stop you,” said Haibara.
“We believe in you,” said Kaito.
The night was spend in good company. The three of them talking about the days before the zombies took over. Shinichi knew he was close to a cure for his infection. Haibara hadn’t let him down yet.
She would deliver.
Happy Halloween!
