another commission from @justangel-draws, featuring their oc, Sammael (on the ground), and mine, Yuo Lavellan (on the left) sparring and being horny about it :3c
[Yuo's pronouns are he/they, Sammael's pronouns are he/they/it]
Tumblr media
the backstory of these two: Sammael is an assassin known as The Hound trained by the Chantry before he killed his handler and escaped. he continued to work as an assassin, and during the earliest days of the Inquisition, he was hired to kill Yuo. Yuo thwarted this attempt decisively and aroused Sammael's interest in doing so. Sammael then offered his blade to Yuo and also expressed interest in sleeping with him.
Yuo is skeptical at first, but at this point does not fully trust his advisors and so agrees to utilize Sammael's skills. without his advisors' knowledge, he charges Sammael with rooting out those in the Chantry and other positions of power who would strike at him. Sammael reports to Yuo through the Red Jennies, and Yuo will either have his enemies disposed of or turn their machinations against them.
eventually, Sammael gains Yuo's trust and reciprocated interest, and they enter into a casual sexual relationship up until Yuo recruits the mages and devotes himself more seriously to closing the Breach. Yuo's companions are aware of Sammael's presence and his relationship with Yuo, but only Sera knows the full extent of what Sammael does for him.
following Yuo's appointment as Inquisitor, there are several more assassination attempts, a couple of which succeed in getting close to him. Sammael is responsible for finding their employers and removing the threats. he later ends up working with Zevran Arainai, and an old acquaintance of Yuo's, who interferes with a Crow assassination attempt.

The movements of the Hero of Ferelden after the Blight are an interesting topic, to be sure; there are entire books pondering the subject, including one rather torrid romance series banned in at least three territories. Lady Amell herself has never offered clarification, other than to mention that she's never very much been an enthusiast for ropes as the romance suggests.
What is known is that, at Queen Anora's insistence, she became the Warden-Commander of Amaranthine for a spell - a time marked by several acute disagreements with both King Alistair and her second-in-command, Nathaniel Howe (though the latter, it's said, sourced greatly from passion rather than the fervent dislike shared by King and Hero). In the end, she bequeathed leadership to Howe and made herself scarce from Ferelden, not stepping upon its shores again for many years.
The tales warp and part into separate threads, after that; some say she was seen in the company of the former usurper, Loghain Mac Tir, in Montsimmard; still others speak of her roaming the Free Marches with the Qunari who would one day become Arishok - though not since he left for Par Vollen; yet more whisper of her travels with the Witch of the Wilds, before Empress Celene made a court advisor of the latter.
Perhaps there's some truth to them all; Lady Amell has never elaborated.
What can be confirmed is that she made landfall in Antiva City some time around 9:34 or 9:35, where she encountered a Circle very much like the one she'd inhabited prior to its near total destruction. With the power and clout she'd gained for herself in her travels - along with the backing of one Tejasvin Demetrius, a merchant prince rumored to be her father, and Zevran Arainai, the only assassin known to have left the Crows and lived - she made major headway in preventing the likes of Uldred from ever happening to the Asha Alcazar.
Eventually, she became the youngest First Enchanter in Southern Thedas; when the Circle as an entity was officially dissolved in 9:38, she maintained her role as leader and protector of the Alcazar, whose inhabitants began calling themselves the Antivan Owls in direct conjunction with the Crows - though they would not consider themselves either allies or enemies with the assassins.
When the Conclave was called, Sister Nightingale reached out to Lady Amell for mutual aid in the impending Inquisition; the Lady herself would be the Inquisition's magical (or, esoterics) advisor, while her Owls would both serve and be protected by the newfound group. Lady Amell accepted. Some of the Owls traveled as escort to Lady Montilyet, while the rest - along with Amell herself - shapeshifted into birds to take to the skies and arrive ahead of schedule.
The surprise of a considerable flock landing at Haven in the midst of demons pouring forth from the Breach, particularly after said flock turned back into mages, must have been quite a shock. When questioned, Lady Amell commented that she wasn't sure what vexed her more; that she'd arrived too late to assist Divine Justinia, or that Leliana hadn't thought to warn her just who would be commanding the Inquisition's armed forces. Further explanation was not offered.
I realized that I'd never really pinned down just what Jeanne was up to between DAO and DAI, so I figured I should! I also wanted to redraw her old advisor outfit, now with extra Antivan flair.
As for Antiva, I wracked my brain for quite a while to figure out which Circle she would have ended up at to reintroduce herself to the system; Antiva City won out both for the sake of her roots through dear old Dad, and the fact that all we know about it is that it is (or, was) as strict as Kinloch. "Asha Alcazar" comes from Queen Asha Campana (important Antivan historical figure), and the word for a Spanish fortress and/or palace.
Jeanne's also a good waypoint between Vivienne's Loyalists and Fiona's Libertarians, which I think would work well for the Inquisition's official magic advisor. If asked, she'd probably call herself an Aequitarian with Lucrosian tendencies.

Would you be willing to make a mod of all Dragon Age Companions + Advisors heads/faces (minus Cullen😜)? I know that Ghouls already has Dorian and Painted Elf has Zevran, but it would be cool to have all the others.
I think it's a cool idea but that would be a LOT of work. I'm not saying I wouldn't be willing to do it, but just that if you're inquiring about a commission, I couldn't get away without charging $50 per head (heavy sculpting, armature editing which I'm not even good at so I'd have to learn better, and texturing would be involved).

Party 3 and 6 and Codex 4 and 10 for whichever/however many of your wonderful fellas you'd like c:
Hi friend! <3
Ok, these are all interesting, if it's another rambling mess... I hope it'll entertain you for a while, LOL. I kept it with one for each question before this became an essay. It's still an essay, but shorter!
Tis the Prompt List
PARTY
3. Which companions (or advisors) do they like to spend time with when they’re not travelling?
Alyra: Basically, people that also did some shit in their life and she doesn't need to pretend to be a good person with. Morrigan and Zevran mainly, Morrigan shares her "survival of the fittest" mood, she feels like she can talk about her own culture with her without having an Andrastian perspective on the other hand.
Zevran doesn't flinch if she says that oh yeah I killed those people so well, shares her humour and they started to brew alcoholics and make cocktails together out of nostalgy. She just avoided drinking or eating anything that came from his hands for the first months, then decided he would be very stupid to try and poison her later in a camp full of people who would retaliate, and if he is, then he deserves to be horribly killed as a consequence (he laughed about it). Zevran helped her with most of the drinking songs she composed. She'll try to rile Sten up on the road, she likes talking with him a lot. Leliana came later, they started the rockiest, but when they started to develop a relationship... Let's say Leliana is partially to blame if she later on became a fashionista.
6. Do they have a love interest? How did their relationship start?
Raina: She and Isabela definitely share a humour and a willingness to have some fun. It started as that, just a fun activity to do together... Raina said she could keep it casual, she really really can't. She was head over heels after the first cutscene, tried to hide it. Merrill was the one she actually felt bad in using wit as a mask or a way to dismiss nasty conversations about feelings. As silver-tongued as she is, she doesn't talk about feelings willingly, and she's just very good and charismatic enough to turn the conversation in her favour. With Merrill? She looses her ability to speak. Think Milo Thatch with Kida in the pool scene. She admires her greatly and thought she was horribly brave: as much as Raina will chant that she'd love nothing more than to be free and sail on the horizon with Isabela... She'll never have the courage to leave her family behind. Merrill did it shrugging it off, it was so out of her conception that she just had a stroke. It became years of very badly trying to hide how much she was pining over her. After a first disastrous approach, it was actually Raina to ask to try it again. Merrill had to be convinced that it wasn't too much for her, as it's been the first time.
Max: She got curious about the mind-merging things, Liara touched something that resonated... She got curious, fell head over heels approaching and getting to know her better. At the first curse-word in ME2, Max decided she was the love of her life.
CODEX
4. How do they feel about the Fade, spirits, and demons?
Garrett: The Fade is his playground, he actually loves it and takes it as a riddle to solve, loves how the place follows its own logic. If it was him to jump into the Fade instead of Raina, in Adamant, that part of the mission would have lasted three hours more because he would have stopped to EACH SINGLE peculiarity and stared at it in marvel. considering there was Solas there, the Nightmare would have been defeated with a single well aimed blow as he was distracted by pure boredom waiting for them. They'd been UNSUFFERABLE. (he tried to pester Aisling about it, later on.) Spirits and Demons for him are just two different faces of the same coin. The concept of "negative" emotion is something he doesn't share at all. Rage can be useful at times, Fear keeps you alive in a dangerous situation, Sloth makes you rest and avoid getting overly tired, Pride isn't inherently a bad thing. Taken in the right amount, every emotion is useful: "demons", as a consequence, are too. As a blood mage, he deals with "demons" pretty close, has learnt to deal with them. He listened to Merrill A LOT, as she moved in the manor. When a demon tries to lure him into a deal, he basically psychoanalizes them, make them talk about their problems, why they want to come to the real world, surely they can talk about it and find a solution. He'll get a farm and will put demons and shades to weed the pumpkin patch as a way to let steam out and clear their minds, they're just a little confused and some physical work will surely do them good. u_u Picture a very, VERY confused rage demon with a -enchanted- straw hat and a pair of gloves cutting dead leaves away. (he's beloved by all his neighbours, yes.)
10. Are there any animals they have a particular love or hatred for?
Aisling: She loves all animals, animals never did anything wrong ever. If a halla kicked her, it was her fault, the animal is totally in the right. Horses, hallas and all four-legged things are her favourite, she wishes so bad for a dragon egg to see if she can imprint the dragonling ("Like birds! :D"), and Cullen had to veto her to bring venomous animals inside the house ("But poor Chilli Pepper was so cold outside, snakes don't fare well in spring... If you hadn't yelled and thrashed around he would have kept sleeping peaceful- ok, ok, I'll bring him out. >:C" ). She isn't particularly fond of boars ("You don't want to meet a boar in the wild. You can reason with much of anything, but boars?") and spiders. Too many legs, too many eyes, no thank you. She'll bring spiders outside with a piece of paper nonetheless because poor thing must be scared I know but this isn't your home, go weave your web on that nice bush over there do you like it? In the universe where she and Arianwen (@shivunin's warden) are friends, Wen was the one to convince her that spiders are cute too. Princess is so well behaved, how not to like her, even if that quantity of eyes is a little disturbing?
In the Whale AU, she can't stand penguins. On the first expedition she people-pleased her way into, she quickly realized she was sent there just as a secretary, to take notes and serve coffee to the other researchers. It didn't sit right with her at all, and to prove she has stuff to say, she packed her things and ventured in the penguin colony they were studying on her own. Penguins aren't deadly, but they can get aggressive: she was pushed, hit her shoulder very badly, enough to break, and just crawled into a hut they build, shutting herself in. She stayed there three days until the damn penguins left her space to crawl out and go back to the base... And it was just in time: they were about to leave giving her as lost. She waited too much to get her shoulder healed, and it never moved as much as before. Penguins are horrible people.

The Ultimate Best Dragon Age Non-Romantic relationship Dynamic
Tumblr media
What we are looking for: We are looking for the ultimate best non-romantic relationship dynamic. That dynamic may come in many forms. They may be platonic besties, they may be antagonistic, they may have a parental/child relationship. But whatever they have, it’s wonderful to watch unfold and to think about. Ask yourself which relationship dynamic makes you unhinged? Makes you want to lock them in a room together? Makes you want to listen to all their dialogue/interactions on repeat? Which is your favourite duo to pair up, that you can’t stop thinking about how they work together (or don’t work together). Which relationship dynamic is the one that propels each character forward in their own development? Which relationship dynamic brings out an interesting side of each of the characters we don’t get to see as much?
What we are NOT looking for: We are not looking for the ‘best friends’ or the ‘most healthy relationship dynamic’ or ‘the ones who care the most about each other’ or ‘ones I wish had been better friends in canon’. We are also not looking for your favourite characters, we are looking specifically for the relationship dynamic.
I will be including a dialogue or interaction quote/snippet underneath each poll to give you a refresher on how they interact. We are not voting on which of those dialogues is the best either - it’s just an example.
A number of contestants get a ‘heads start’ so to say, as they will not be involved in either round one, or round two, but will enter the game straight at round three. These are the Big Bois, the really fleshed out dynamics. The others defo stand a chance, but we need to refine them down a bit before they go up against the dynamics in round three.
I’m sorry if your fav relationship didn’t make the cut - I ran my list past my dragon age discord and a couple of other friends, but I know I missed a few off. Alas, there had to be a certain number, so I did my best.
Happy voting! And may the best relationship dynamic win! I’ll be tagging all the stuff for this as ‘#dragon age ultimate non-romantic relationship’ and this masterlist will be pinned

Comprehensive speculation about companion line-up from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf (based on leaks, concept art and more)
This post will use info we have from leaks and also from comics, concept art and short stories, plus Tevinter Nights, so if you don't want to be spoiled, steer clear! Of course, this is all speculation so feel free to add your thoughts.
The leaks showed us 3 possible/probably warrior sub-classes - Grey Warden Guardian, Lords of Fortune Berseker and the Mourn Watch Reaper. We also got a leak which implied existence of black elf, red-haired rogue (possibly dwarf?) and a female (possibly human?) mage. We got the name Rook, but I am assuming that's the code name of our player character.
Tumblr media
If we go based on previous games, companions always used the sub-classes offered by the game to the player character. Since there are 3 archetypes/sub-classes, its reasonable to assume the count will be 3 x 3, same as in Inquisition - aka 3 companions per class, one each archetype.
Another thing that Bioware likes to do is to use the companions as the "representatives" of various factions around the Thedas you encounter. In DaD, we know we will be operating in the northern part of the map.
Lastly, in DA:I, we had 2 elves, 1 dwarf, one qunari, 1 spirit and rest of the cast were humans, so I am considering similar numbers in DA:D.
Okay, so line-up in detail:
Warriors
Grey Warden Guardian - Davrin from the leaks. Black elf, member of the Grey Wardens. Character who appeared in one previous "making of" feature as well, so this one I am fairly sure about. Represents Grey Wardens faction.
Mourn Watch Reaper - this likely will be the character with the flaming skull we saw in some promo images. Represents Nevarra and Mortalitasi. Our "weird spirit" guy, akin to Cole in DA:I.
Lords of Fortune Berseker - faction which appeared in both Tevinter Nights and Absolution. Represents Rivain/connection to the sea. No idea about gender. While some Lords of Fortune appeared in both stories and Absolution, I am betting on new character.
Rogues
4. Ben-Hassrath agent and/or (Tal)Vashot Striker - our qunari character. Based on pictures, probably a tall Qunari woman. Ben-Hassrath makes more sense as representative of Qun, on the other hand, we already got Ben-Hassrath agent in the previous game, so its possible the character wont be a Qun member.
5. Antivan Crow Assasin - Crows features heavily in Tevinter nights, and we didnt get a "proper" member yet (sorry Zevran). Could be entirely new character, but if its someone already mentioned, I am betting on Lucanis Dellamorte, who is a grandson of the current Crows leader. (he is implied to be dead in the short stories, however, so we will see.) Either way I am thinking a man.
6. Inquisition agent OR Kal-Sharok Dwarf - the third rogue is definitely a dwarf. Red hair dwarf could suggest Lace Harding, who lot of fans have been asking for and who could represent former Inquisition. If it isn't her, it could be a dwarf from Kal-Sharok, as its a dwarven city we havent met anyone from yet.
Mages
7. Tevinter Magister - could be Dorian as a returning companion, but I am betting more on Maevaris Tilani, who we know is kin to Varric.
8. Dalish Keeper OR Ancient Elf mage - elven character who for their own reasons fights against Solas. Probably a new character. Since Davrin is a male elven character, I am betting a woman.
9. Apostate mage? Former Circle member? One from those Beyond the Sea? - no idea about this character. Definitely someone new. If there are only 8 characters and not 9, possibly nobody.
Brightened picture from one of the trailers matched with the numbers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You might be asking, what about Varric? Apart from Solas, he is the only one character confirmed to appear. Imo Varric will be our advisor/mentor and not an active companion (or only for one or two missions.) Let the poor dwarf rest! If there are advisors like in DA:I, I could see one of them being Dorian, the third then a new (possibly woman?) character.
So, with this line up, we have 9 companions, 2 are elves, 1 dwarf, 1 qunari, one weird spirit guy, rest are humans. We get Grey Wardens, Nevarra, Rivain, Qunari, Antiva, Dwarves (or Inquisition?), Tevinter, Dalish or other elves, last ambiguous faction. Hopefully we will learn the details this year.
Thoughts? Opinions? Arguments?

A question for you! Which of your OCs has the Worst decision-making skills and why--funny answers encouraged.
omgggg anne please they're ALL really bad at decision making. all of their decisions cause problems to themselves and for everyone else.
there's evadne who seems to make the right decisions in the base game because everyone else is acting as her moral compass/she wants everyone to like her SO MUCH but she's also like *picks up some possessed vial in a werewolf lair and learns magic from it, freeing the spirit* *violates andraste's ashes and then lies to her andrastian gf about it* *finds some musty ass vial of unspeakable liquids in an ancient warden keep and tips it back like a tequila shot* and then we get to awakening and she's like yeah yeah its fine *recruits everyone trying to kill her and also the spirit possessing the dead rotting corpse of one of her wardens* like EXCELLENT decisions there miss evadne
there's kal who spent her entire playthrough trying to protect alistair from everything, including eamon and having him become king, so she supports anora taking the throne and anora asks for her father's life and for that reason, amongst a myriad of others like the fact loghain is her blorbo, she spares loghain only to have alistair IMMEDIATELY turn on her. so ANORA turns on him and demands his execution. she spent the entire game trying to protect him only to get him EXILED FROM FERELDEN. (i almost missed the dialogue that would have spared him so can you fucking IMAGINE.) in the universes where she doesn't spare loghain and makes alistair king, HE PUBLICALLY DUMPS HER IN FRONT OF ALL THEIR FRIENDS FOR A DEFICIENT WOMB. i suppose her real crime of bad decision making was romancing alistair first instead of zevran EOFGJKDFGJ
aedan is a contender - he thinks he's making excellent decisions but he ends up with an orlesian mistress and a child out of wedlock with orlais' arcane advisor within 30 years of the occupation, and within 10 years of the empress trying to get king cailan to divorce his ferelden wife to marry her so she could take ferelden as part of the pre-nups. faris makes bad decisions on purpose because he literally does not care about any of it.
damon and mal are both partially purple personalities which is synonymous with bad decisions. damon flirting with anders right after karl dies and making the WORST jokes about justice having a sexy body is definitely top 10 worst dragon age decision making moments.
marya conscripted the templars because she thought that's what the inquisition wanted and had no idea she could exercise any agency for that and go support the mages instead. she got the chargers killed because she misread bull entirely and imagined he cared more about the qun than his men. she only found out about the halamshiral alienage AFTER she put celene back on the throne. SHE ROMANCED THE ACTUAL REAL LIFE DREADWOLF.
but i think another major contender for bad decisions is isra. she romances cullen. enough said.

WIP WThursday
Tagged yesterday by @delicatefade and I didn't get to post before I went to bed.
Tagging @dreadfutures @rosella-writes @imakemywings @rakshadow @warpedlegacy
I am getting back to work on A Hero Sleeps in Gwaren, so here's a snippet of that.
Context: Briala and Tabris are having breakfast with King Alistair, and the conversation is moving on from the false Calling to lighter subjects, like Alistair's love life. (Background Zevistair!)
Briala interjected, "Does Lord Eamon know?"
"He doesn't. I’ve been dreading telling him, if I'm being honest. He's been after me to marry for years."
Talith raised an eyebrow. "Did you… tell him about Grey Wardens and children?"
"I did tell him that, yes. He says its my duty to try.” Alistair ran a hand through his hair, and sighed. “And to answer your next question, no, he doesn’t know about… the ritual.” Before Briala could ask what a blood magic ritual had to do with the line of succession, he went on, “And he won’t. Not so long as I have anything to say about it. I made a promise to Morrigan, and I mean to keep it.”
Talith smiled. “You’ve softened on her over the years.”
“Well, she did save our lives. More importantly, she was very clear on the point that she never wanted the child involved in politics. I respect that. I of all people understand that.”
Briala sat, quietly coming to grips with the fact that the King of Ferelden had had a secret child with Celene’s arcane advisor, in what had supposedly been a blood magic ritual to prevent the death of a Grey Warden to whom she was now married. Despite all her years of collecting noble gossip and intrigue for the empress and later for herself, she doubted she could have imagined such a thing had she tried.
“I do, too. I wouldn’t go back on that.” Talith gave her friend and king a sidelong look. “So… no marriage on the horizon I understand, but there wouldn’t be anyone… special for you, would there?”
King Alistair blinked, clearly caught off guard. “Well, I mean—”
“I knew it!” Talith cried with startling enthusiasm. “You’re sleeping with Zevran, aren’t you?”
The king’s face went a deep red. “How on earth did you figure that out?”
“Very easily. You never told me he was in Denerim, but you asked him to come to the wedding and keep an eye out. Which means that you knew he was here, therefore he was probably here for you, and you were embarrassed to tell me because you knew I’d figure it out.” Talith crossed her arms triumphantly. “Do I have it?”
“Maker’s breath,” King Alistair muttered.
Talith laughed and patted his arm. “You’ll never be a rogue, Your Majesty. Don’t worry, I’ll keep it quiet. Honestly, I’m happy for you both. Truly.”
The king was still red-faced, but smiled. “Thank you. I—he does make me happy. I hope I do the same for him.”

burdens of command
words: 700 tags: inquisition-era, mahariel, alistair theirin, zevran arainai, alistair is warden-commander, friendship, disagreements, zevran/m!warden
The man at the bar isn’t there at all. He carries new scars over his freckled skin and he listens, over his drink, to something far away. He seems untroubled, though Zevran knows this is not the case.
The False Calling. The same tune stuck in Hamal’s head.
Hamal described it as a progression that repeated over and over again, with no change. There was one particular part that he disliked—the pitch too high and dissonant—and it made his teeth hurt and it made him wince each time it echoed in his mind.
Zevran worries.
He’s become something of a worrywart lately, and thinks this might be the trouble with living too long. But the good parts make it worth it; he comes to meet his friend at the bar.
Before he even seats himself at his side, Alistair speaks, tense and halting.
“He’s angry at me, isn’t he?”
Zevran pauses. Alistair gives him a skittering sideways look, then turns away.
“Isn’t he?” he asks.
Zevran hums and lowers himself into a stool. “My husband… has been known to be a bit of an ass at times,” he states diplomatically.
“So he’s furious,” Alistair says, and runs a hand over his face.
Zevran smiles, watching as Alistair pinches the bridge of his nose.
“I would not dwell on it.”
“How couldn’t I?” Alistair asks. “His opinion matters to me, you know. I just… well.”
Zevran nods. “He is worried,” he says quietly. “That’s all.”
Both remembering, they lapse into silence.
.
The incident in question had occurred the day before, following a lengthy meeting with the Inquisitor and her advisors. Despite the state of things, Alistair had felt bolstered by the promise of aid from the Inquisition. A light at the end of the tunnel, a glimmer of hope, and he seized on it with a fury that had driven him all these years as Warden-Commander.
“I’m just eager to set this right,” Alistair had said. “Bring my Wardens home. I can’t tell you what it means to have you there, too. It’ll be just like old times, eh?”
“Oh,” said Hamal, and Zevran recognized the look in his eyes—drained from the meeting, tired of the song. He wanted to get out as soon as he could.
“I am not going.”
“You’re not…” Alistair looked at him. “What d’you mean?”
“If you recall, I am here as an envoy of Var’myathan. Not to fight or aid the Inquisition in any way-”
“Not to fight—not to aid? Hamal, this isn’t for the Inquisition. It’s for the Wardens. You’re hearing the False Calling, too. I need—I can’t do this on my own.”
“And you won’t; the Inquisitor has been very generous in providing her support. More than we expected. A decision I advocated for, I remind you.”
Were they younger, they might’ve argued.
Certainly they had traded enough barbs during the Blight, but always, always reaching some mutual agreement or compromise. Zevran remembered it well. The way Alistair steeled himself this time.
“And I appreciate it,” he’d said. “But… I need all the aid I can get. Like it or not, you are still a Warden, and I am the Warden-Commander of Ferelden.”
“Come now, Alistair-” Hamal shook his head.
“Be ready to depart following tomorrow’s preparations. Warden Mahariel, you are being recalled.”
.
“I just thought maybe my opinion mattered to him, too,” Alistair sighs.
Command seems a heavy thing. Zevran is personally glad he’s never been burdened by it, and he feels only a deep sympathy for his friend.
Though years of battle and responsibility have wrought their work upon him, for tonight, the Warden-Commander isn’t here. Instead he is still that young man who grieved his predecessor, and watched all his friends fall at Ostagar.
The Wardens mean something to Alistair that they never could to Hamal. But their friendship is not some flimsy thing, either. They both need to know that.
Zevran sets a hand on his shoulder, giving him a reassuring pat.
“It does,” he tells him honestly, and feeling him relax under the touch, he continues, “And, though he won’t yet admit it, he respects the decision you made. He’s proud of it. Trust me, my friend. I know him better than I know myself. You’ll see. This will blow over soon.”

zevwarden week 2022 - day 2
Fandom: Dragon Age: Origins
Title: ZevWarden Week, Day 2 - Gold
Pairing: Zevran x male!Warden; Zevran Arainai x Salem Surana (x Leliana, poly!Warden referenced)
Word Count: 1,368
Crows have garnered a rather unfairly bad reputation. Not Antivan Crows, of course; actual crows. Black birds too commonly seen as frightening, intimidating, dark, mysterious bearers of bad omens. Zevran finds it funny, how many would say the same thing about the Warden.
_______________
There was something incredibly satisfying about knowing a secret that few others were privy to. It created moments in which Zevran would hear others talking about the subject of said secrets, trading wildly inaccurate information none the wiser, and he’d be left to smirk to himself, knowing he and he alone knew the truth. It fell along the same veins as his previous work, being a spy and an infiltrator, pilfering and safeguarding sensitive truths like a little hoard all his own. Except these secrets meant so much more than those ones did. These were secrets no amount of gold could ever buy.
For each secret about the last Grey Warden was a little treasure, and Zevran cherished them all. Much in the same way that Salem himself cherished the things he collected - though that hoard was much more... eclectic.
Zevran once thought he knew Crows. Knew why the assassins’ guild had chosen that name - because a flock of crows was called a Murder, of course. And such a dramatic irony could never be ignored. Crows were omens of ill-fortune, thieves and scavengers. It had seemed accurate.
At least, until he got to know Salem Surana.
It had started small, in their world-saving days, whenever they’d make camp in the wilds, dodging enemies from all sides. In those short times of peace amidst war, there’d be moments. Moments where Zevran would find Salem sitting across from a particular tree as if conversing, only to spot a single black bird in the branches. The next time Zevran would find him, there’d be more.
It never stopped, even after the conflict had ended. Despite aiding Alistair as an advisor, Salem rarely spent more time than necessary in the capitol. He wanted to keep traveling, he said, and Zevran and Leliana were free to join him if and when they wished. So they did, and along the way, others joined them, this time not to fight great evil, but to simply... be. Salem welcomed those who wished to experience the land, the wilds, and as much as they were able, magic.
And every step of the way, Salem was constantly befriending crows. He had a way with them that Zevran could only marvel at - though, considering how thoroughly the mage had Zev wrapped around his finger, perhaps he shouldn’t have been so surprised.
In the same way that Salem gave offerings of wayfaring freedom to the curious and open of mind, he gave things to the crows he met. Little things, seemingly random things. Nuts, berries, rocks. Keys, coins, bits of string, broken jewelry, scraps of metal or brightly colored fabric.
In kind, they brought him things in return, mostly of a similar ilk. On occasion, they’d deliver startlingly valuable items - whole gold pieces, scrolls, a wand once. However, most of the time, the crows brought things that had very little worth in the grand scheme of things, but made for a fabulous amount of odd and endearing clutter. He kept them all. Zevran never saw him throw a single crow’s gift away.
When the earring Zev gifted him became a permanent fixture on his ear, that really should have been the first sign.
By the time the little troupe decided to make a more permanent encampment in the wilds, under Salem’s guidance, Zevran had begun taking inspiration from the crows in his own gifting practices. He let his whims guide him, and anything that caught his attention for no good reason - anything shiny or strange or just plain fun - would immediately be purchased. Or pocketed, depending.
Then, Zevran would wait until a particularly good moment to give it. Once, it was when Salem returned from a stint to the capitol for a noble function; he returned exhausted and frustrated with court complexities, and Zevran distracted him with a well-timed kiss and a pretty little brooch he’d picked up from a village bazaar. Another time, they were both covered in blood, as they usually were after a darkspawn encounter. Zev had decided to provide levity to the moment by handing over a metal contraption he was fairly certain was a chastity cage, though it was pitifully small and dangerously rusted from its time in the riverbank he’d found it on, which was where he’d attracted the attention of the darkspawn in the first place. Salem had nearly died laughing, and Zev considered it a job well done.
Their tent back home had, in a comparatively short time, become a veritable dragon’s hoard of knickknacks and trinkets that made no sense being together, yet looked incongruously fabulous all piled up, hanging off cords and chains on the tent posts or old nets strung between them. It was rattling, glittering chaos... but it was Salem’s chaos. A crow’s chaos.
Funny how the Grey Warden was as much a crow as Zev had once been, but in an entirely different way.
Because Salem befriending crows meant Zevran got to know them too. He soon found them a much more heartwarming subject than he thought they would be. They were incredibly intelligent, but terribly distractable. Deeply curious, but comically cautious. They were organized, had families and scouts and distinct ways of communicating the approach of a friend or foe, danger or celebration. They remembered well those who were kind to them, and even better those who were not. They held grudges for generations, and funerals for their dead.
Spending time with the crows soon became spending time with Salem. Learning more of those secrets Zevran held in such esteem. Some of them even secrets he might have dared to exploit not too long ego; now, he saw them for the treasure they are.
“It’s a shame,” Salem said once, breaking off crusts of bread to toss to the local murder, “that so few understand crows as they are. In the Circle, they were simply... foreboding signs. Harbingers of misfortune. It’s unfair, really.”
“Hm.” Zevran sat back, leaning his palms into the dry grass. His gaze scanned the many, many crows surrounding them, some simply watching, others swooping in and out to fetch the bread. A few hung comfortably close, hopping up to them for pets and scritches before bounding away again. “Well, there is something to be said for an imposing reputation. It keeps the less savory types at bay.”
Salem’s face twisted, silver-grey eyes narrowing at the middle distance, a clear look of doubt. “Not really... in fact, I think it makes the less savory the only ones who will give the birds a chance. Which in turn just reenforces their reputation as evil, because they’re spending time with the selfish or dangerous or deadly, and it’s just...” He trailed off, hand tucking under his ashen hair to rub the back of his neck, as if he’d realized he was rambling. “...a whole misfortunate thing.”
“True enough.” Zev turned a smirk to his partner. “I suppose that makes us quite the wicked pair, ah?”
He realized then that what he just said was far more true than he meant it.
Salem seemed to pick up on that right away, smirking back. “A renegade Circle mage turned to blood magic, tainted with darkspawn blood, and a wanted assassin from the slums of Antiva on the run from a deadly mercenary guild? Whatever do you mean, ‘wicked’?”
After that, Salem had surprised Zevran with a gift for once. An earring. Not a match to his own, but a spiritual companion to that gift. Not a particularly beautiful one either, but something unique. An unrefined amber stone set in a pendant of gold covered in a handsome tarnish. Salem said he found the pendant at a merchant’s estate sale, sans gem, and that the hunt for the latter had spanned several different cities and countless pawn shops and ultimately, it had been a crow that brought him the amber. A unique gift, a gift with thought. One that Zevran gladly accepted. Along with the kisses that followed.
In a way, he realized both of them shared a kinship with the crows. Both ostracized for reputations outside their control. Both far kinder, warmer, more affectionate than most would ever think.
And all of them greatly fond of trinkets.

Top 5 Dragon Age romances
Zevran!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zevran, Zevran, Zevran. My beloved assassin boi. I am a sucker for friends-with-benefits to lovers featuring the "Oh no we can't fuck now I've caught feelings and I don't know how to deal with it" plot beat. And that letter you get from him in Awakening? Where he calls you "my sweet" and talks about how he misses you and can't wait until he can return to your side (or until you can find your way to his)? His (bugged) cameo in DA2 where he talks about he's been away from his Warden for far too long? The way that he's the only DAO LI still beside his Warden in DAI? I cannot, it's too good, too soft. Also I am not immune to that accent. Bioware when will my husband come back from helping his husband cure the Calling.
And here we get to the tricky ones, so we're just gonna call 2 and 3 a tie because I cannot choose. So, because I'm currently romancing him: Dorian. Him being so sure his relationship with Quiz will end in tragedy—either because it turns out that Quiz isn't as serious about it as him or because Quiz's position as the Lord Inquisitor will destroy him, his chance of having a life outside of his role, or both—but going for it anyway because he can't not? His constant worry over what being with him will mean for how people see Quiz? Him being basically the only LI to show concern for Quiz pre-Trespasser (mostly because he, Varric and Vivienne are basically the only characters to show concern for Quiz pre-Trespasser period, but still)? The whole post-HLtA romanced conversation where he talks about how he thought he'd lost Quiz? He's so good, I adore him. Also the fact that if romanced Quiz will sneak into Minrathous to see him despite how insanely dangerous that is is delightful. Bull and Dorian meet on the border because it's incredibly unsafe for Bull in Tevinter, but the Lord Inquisitor just. sneaks on in to meet with his lover. Possibly the most high-profile guy in Thedas just casually strolling into the heart of Tevinter, it's so funny to me.
The second part of the tie: Bull. Naturally. Hnnnnnn BDSM friends-with-benefits to lovers my beloved. It also proves that Bull is aware of the weight being the Inquisitor is putting on Quiz in a way the others don't seem to be. I really love how the whole romance (unless you sacrifice the Chargers, which we Do Not Talk About) revolves so strongly around Bull wanting to give Quiz a safe place to put down the burden of being the Inquisitor when so much of the cast doesn't even seem to recognize that it is a burden! A particular favourite of mine is him choosing to dance with you in the ballroom proper at the end of WEaWH while the other LIs dance with you on the balcony, which to me feels like it's coming from the same place as his Trespasser codex entry and the bit where formalizing your relationship involves you very firmly telling your advisors that this is not a bit of meaningless fun and you intend to continue, before asking them if they have a problem with that in a tone that suggests if they say yes they're going to have a much bigger problem to contend with; your relationship isn't going to be some dirty little secret for people to titter at behind their hands! You two are going to rub your happiness and your romance in their faces at every opportunity and they are just going to have to deal with that. Also, so many good vibes in Trespasser. I mean they're also absolutely miserable vibes, but all Bull's romance banter in Trespasser is god tier. I especially love Bull referring to "kadan" as "a title of honour for the woman/man [he] love[s]", and the one after the bit where Bull can betray you where depending on chosen dialogue you can get Quiz saying "Just try to keep up, darling" (pet names are Good Shit) or Bull promising to always be by Quiz's side (which is tragic what with the whole "dying" thing, but still).
Fenris. I'm always going to have a soft spot for Fenhawke because that's actually what got me into DA in the first place; I saw ship art and got curious. Also, Gideon Emery's sexy, sexy voice. I am not immune. But also because I always play mages Fenris coming to learn that not all mages are like Danarius and him learning to trust Hawke is so good. Also him cutting and running from the relationship in a panic for three years while still wearing Hawke's favour constantly is so good, I love it.
Josie! Now I admit I haven't finished her romance yet (which honestly is part of the reason why she's fifth and not higher), but it's just so damn cute. Also, you fighting a duel for her hand and her getting mad at you over it is so much fun and such a Romance Thing! The "lady and knight" vibes are through the roof and I am all for that. Also, Leliana being Protective over Josie... good shit. She loves her friend so damn much and that really comes through in Josie's romance.
