Hum Saath Saath Hain

An entire movie about a character named Mamta who lacked maternal instincts when it came to her adoptive son. So much wow. 

I mean, what the heck is going on in this movie? In the first ten minutes you meet like thirty characters and have no hope of keeping track of them, and it only gets worse from there! Three sons and a daughter who luurrve their parents so0o0o0 much they wrote a song about it. All that damned sanskaar, but it goes flying out the window the moment Sangeeta gets kicked out of home. And obviously, the solution is to kick your new bahu out of her home -- gotta pay that karma forward.

Their daughter’s plight brings up issues of inheritance and yet they never think maybe she wants a share of daddy’s wealth? No? They send her packing to another part of the country where they don’t have to see her tears? I mean, it makes sense. They bring three kick arse women into their household, including an honest to God doctor, and put them in the kitchen to serve on the men. Don’t even get me started on Sadhna joining the office because “women prove better administrators”.

And the one decent man in the entire movie? Their damaad? He’s the butt of jokes every ten minutes because he *shock horror* cooks and helps his wife with the child-rearing and thinks of marriage as a true partnership. At no point does anyone offer him a share of their aalishaan Mamta Industries, which  ... you know ... would solve all their problems.

No instead, we’re told we all want husbands like Prem (who is apparently a saint, and we need to chant his name every twenty minutes), who can’t get engaged without calling out for his mother like a fucking toddler. Was she there during their suhaag raat too? (You’d think I was joking but no, the wedding night is a family affair for these people!) 

There’s fat shaming, (sanskaari) slut-shaming, and a healthy dose of every -ism you can think of. Everyone acts terribly -- Prem and Preethi’s entire character sketch is shy -- and even Mohnish Behl in a positive role isn’t enough to save this one.

2/10 literally the only good thing about it is that I started watching IPKKND because I recognised Nani as one of the actors in HSSH. And Maiya Yashoda.

So why is it my favourite movie? Because it represents an ideal. Growing up, the idea that a family could get along and solve their issues and literally be together like this was wild to me -- most of my family live in other countries, my home life could be made into a B grade ~edgy~ movie with mood lighting and lots of swearing, and the less I tell you about what my therapist says about it all, the better. I know it’s a terrible movie, yet when I watch it I get absurdly hopeful that somewhere, somehow, there are families like this. Happy ones.
