Dinofact #44
Known from several well-preserved skulls, Majungasaurus can be distinguished from other abelisaurids by its wide skull, its thick, roughly textured bone on its snout, and the single rounded horn on the top of its skull, which was originally mistaken for the dome of a pachycephalosaur. It also had more teeth than moth other abelisaurids.

Day 15: Abelisauridae; Rugops.
An African abelisaurid is the rare and yet more scavenger that lived in early-late Cretaceous period probably around the same time as Carcharodontosaurus and Spinosaurus.

Name: Lametasaurus indicus
Name Meaning; Lameta Reptile
First Described: 1923
Described By: Matley
Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Ceratosauria, Neoceratosauria, Abelisauroidea, Abelisauria, Abelisauridae, Carnotaurinae
Lametasaurus is a dubious Abelisaurid from the Lameta Formation of India, living about 70 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous. It is known from scutes, a sacrum, a pelvis, a tibia, and teeth, which may all be chimeric with one another. The material has been reassigned and assigned to various different dinosaur groups to death until the scutes were finally thought to be that of an Abelisaurid. Sadly, all of this material has been lost, so it’s impossible to test any of this.

PLEASE SUPPORT US ON PATREON. EACH and EVERY DONATION helps to keep this blog running! Any amount, even ONE DOLLAR is APPRECIATED! IF YOU ENJOY THIS CONTENT, please CONSIDER DONATING!
Name: Dryptosauroides grandis
Name Meaning: Similar to Dryptosaurus
First Described: 1933
Described By: Huene & Matley
Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Ceratosauria, Neoceratosauria, Abelisauroidea, Abelisauria
Dryptosauroides is an Abelisaur known from vertebrae from the Lameta Formation of India, living approximately 66 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous. The remains are fairly indistinguishable from other theropods in its formation, so it’s fairly dubious as a genus.

Name: “Bayosaurus pubica”
Name Meaning: Bayo Mesa Reptile
First Mentioned: 2006
Mentioned By: Coria, Currie & Carabajal
Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Ceratosauria, Neoceratosauria, Abelisauroidea, Abelisauria, Abelisauridae, Brachyrostra
“Bayosaurus” is an unofficial name for an Abelisaur from the Lisandro Formation of Neuquen, Argentina. It lived in the Turonian age of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 93 to 89 million years ago. It is known from vertebrae and part of the pelvis. Though described, but not named, it has been studied in phylogenetic analyses, and found to probably be an Abelisaurid.

PLEASE SUPPORT US ON PATREON. EACH and EVERY DONATION helps to keep this blog running! Any amount, even ONE DOLLAR is APPRECIATED! IF YOU ENJOY THIS CONTENT, please CONSIDER DONATING!
Name: Coeluroides largus
Name Meaning: Hollow Form
First Described: 1933
Described By: Von Huene and Matley
Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Ceratosauria, Neoceratopsauria, Abelisauroidea, Abelisauria, Noasauridae
Coeluroides is a possible genus of Noasaurid from the Lameta Formation of India, living about 66 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous. It is only known from scattered tail vertebrae, but it has been estimated at 2 meters long. It was similar in form to Ornithomimoides, and the two might be synonymous.

Name: Vitakridrinda sulaimani
Name Meaning: Vitakri Beast
First Described: 2006
Described By: Malkani
Classification: Dinosauria, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Ceratosauria, Neoceratosauria, Abelisauroidea, Abelisauria, Abelisauridae
Vitakridrinda is an Abelisaurid by our least favorite describer of crappy fossils, Malkani! The genus is based on two thigh bones, a braincase, and a tooth, which at least is a little less speculative than, say, interestingly-shaped rocks. It was found in the Upper Pab Formation of Pakistan, and is from the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 69 million years ago. It was found in Analyses to be an Abelisaurid.
