GW2 Unused dialogue: Flirty lines?
So here's a fun one ;)
During my deep dive into the Living World S1 related dialogue lines in the game, I stumbled across a flirty line from Jory that I hadn't heard before. I didn't think much of it at the time, since several of her regular lines are rather flirty. But then I found one for Braham. And then Rox. And then I started to pay attention.
For most characters, there are blocks of what I like to call 'generic' lines. These blocks tend to be separate from the story-specific lines and ambient conversations, and include things like event-related chatter (let's go, follow me, go on ahead, etc), greetings, yes/no, calls for help, battle cries, etc. And I noticed some of the "thank you"/gratitude lines were almost always preceded by some kind of flirty line (and a few aren't, it's kinda messy haha). So I ran through all the other characters and pulled what I could find.
Not all named characters seem to have these though, and I might have missed one or two that weren't obviously flirty. There's also a chance that some of these are part of ambient conversations I'm not aware of, but most ambient conversations tend to be separate, so I dunno. Like I said; kinda messy.
I've separated them into two groups: Named NPCs and un-named NPCs
Marjory Delaqua: "Mmm, mm, mmm. You can walk into my bar any old time." Braham: "You'd look great in a bear skin." Rox: "I like you almost as much as meat!" Magnus the Bloody Handed: "You look like a kindred spirit. You like winter sports?" Evon Gnashblade: "You like gold? Jewels? I bet you do." Vorpp: "Hello beautiful. Are there anymore at home like you?" Scarlet Briar: "Hello, you're pretty cute. For a drone." Captain Mai Trin: "Do you have what it takes to be my First Mate?" Magister Tassi: "What do you say? You, me, a little romantic stroll through the library, hmm?" Mad King Thorn: "Heey! How would you like to be queen for a day?" Bloody Prince Thorn: "Mmm, you're as luscious as blood in the moonlight."
Lionguard 1: "Hey, good lookin'." Lionguard 2: "My shift's about to end, how about a drink?" Aetherblade 1: "Hey baby, wanna ride on an airship?" Aetherblade 2: "I'm all business. But I'm all pleasure too." Aetherblade 3: "Hey there, hot stuff." Zephyrite 1: "I feel a spark between us." Zephyrite 2: "You outshine the sun." Zephyrite 3: "Did I see a glint in your eye?" Zephyrite 4: "I feel balanced, now that you're here."

okay none of this is new information but as usual i am thinking about gorrik and arenanet just. really never considered the timeline of his life and the implications of that at all, huh
like, okay, for eod you needed him to have a relationship to ankka and you needed ankka to have connections to the aetherblades, so you threw them both in thaumanova, fine
except. thaumanova. which blew up in 1324.
and no, we don't have a canon age for gorrik. but we know taimi's age, that she was friends with blish, and that blish is older than gorrik
now. taimi didn't know that the brothers had joined the inquest. which means either they'd kept it a secret from her, or more likely, it happened after they lost touch
taimi was born in 1313, meaning that the absolute oldest she could have been when she last saw them, is ten
now sure, taimi skipped a couple years, she's a prodigy even among asura - but age really matters when you're in single digits. for blish to be a friend, rather than a mentor, he can't be much older than maybe four years above her? i'd put that as the reasonable upper limit, they could be closer
(i'd also honestly guess that gorrik is a bit younger than taimi, given a) how much he looks up to blish, and b) that taimi prior to s4 only thought of him as blish's weird little brother, they weren't friends. and again, at that young, age matters - if you're 7, your friend is 10, and his little brother is 8 or 9, your first connection to him is probably not "oh, the little brother", because he's not little to you)
but assuming im wrong on all of that, just going back to our facts, that puts gorrik at the most about 2-3 years older than taimi
which means that the age we're looking at, for joining the inquest, thaumanova, all the stuff with ankka... he was somewhere between 9 and 13. could be even younger but im giving him the benefit of the doubt
gorrik says he never thought about ankka romantically and i believe him, but if there was ever anything there from her side, it was definitely a kiddie's first crush kinda thing, like oh we are a boy and a girl who are best friends clearly this is what romance means
because both of them were so fucking young
god knows spending her teenage years in the aetherblades was not great for ankka's everything, and by the time we find gorrik and blish in bug in the system, they've been working for the inquest for at least 8 years
that's almost half his life, at that point. working for an organisation that the thaumanova fractal and rata primus make incredibly clear does not value the lives of its workers in any way at all - they'll feed you to their latest experiment just for standing there, and gorrik wasn't just keeping his head down and going along with it, gorrik was actively sabotaging their research when he morally disagreed with it
(and this isn't even getting into why they joined the inquest in the first place, which i will bet anything i own on being because of blish's illness and needing the technology to save him)
and to their credit, i do think this comes across in bug in the system! because if you go back to early gorrik, first half of s4, having played through the rest of the story? the difference is shocking, like he is so distrusting and snide and defensive as hell of his brother, he talks like he expects you to attack him or blish at any moment
but then they never do anything with that ever again, and like, i love all the new gorrik content, genuinely i do, but arenanet there are layers to this character that you have entirely forgotten about, and god i wish we had a story that actually explored that

🖊🖊🖊 today I would love deets on Stephanie, she's so cool!!! And then two pens for ocs of your choice that you want to talk about!
@mystery-salad
coming right up! 👨‍🍳 < weeks later
🖊 Stephanie has a... complicated relationship with mesmers, and their portals especially. She wouldn't admit it but it does stem from her relationship with her mother (it's not good) and the fact she associates them with her. Wouldn't be uncommon for her to end up being teleported outside their home and they'd fight so she just generally hates the feeling of teleporation and makes her nauseous - though she's getting better at handling it! If not out of necessity, when you're running with street gangs and pirates a hasty escape is often needed, then by exposure therapy ie her fellow crewmate Niko constantly pranking her by placing portals under her feet (but it's fine he didn't know, he apologized)
🖊 you get an extra Steph fact, as a treat. She actually didn’t join the Aetherblades by choice, she’d been working with the Seraph when Scarlet attacked Divinity’s Reach, tasked with maintenance of the automated defenses set around the Crown Pavilion for the Queen's Jubilee. When the Aetherblades ran into her, for whatever reason they took her hostage instead of killing her. She was for the most part left forgotten at the bottom of an airship all throughout Scarlet’s antics until the Aetherblades broke Mai Trin out and fled into the Mists, where they’d get stuck, leaving Steph no real choice but to join them
🖊 Tiernac like every good sylvari had a pretty rough time during HoT, he’d joined a mercenary company to cushion his savings after he ran away from the Aetherblades, but where they’d initially been tasked with simply cleaning up Tangle Root and Fort Vandal of the various Mordrem and vines, he and the company were roped into the assault against Mordremoth because the Pact needed the extra hands. Airships fell yada yada and Tiernac having been an ex Courtier and technically an outsider to the mercenary company, didn’t last very long against Mordremoth’s will. That said he was only placed in a blighting pod shortly before Mordremoth fell so he didn’t undergo any severe physical alterations, his transformation being cut short by his pod falling and cracking open at the bottom of Verdant Brink. As disoriented as he was he did make it out alive and somewhere down the line he’d be hired by Jessamy

Living World Season 1: unused dialogue for Frizz and Horrik
Tumblr media
Just a couple of unused lines I found in the game files for the two boss encounters in the Aetherblade Retreat at the end of the original Dragon Bash/Sky Pirates release.
Frizz
There are only two unused lines I found for Frizz, and both of them sound rather jokey, so I can understand why they were cut
Frizz: Oh, that's just barbaric. He was a friend, you know! Frizz: How shocking! No, wait, wait-wait, I can do better. I got a charge out of that! Uh, I'm bad at this.
First Mate Horrik
Horrik has a significant amount of unused lines here, so I'm going to stand by what I said in the Mai Trin post; I think there's some bug that's stopping some of these lines from playing. Because it just seems weird that Frizz would have 8 lines total for his battle, while Mai and Horrik only say one or two lines each for their entire fight.
First Mate Horrik: You mess with the captain, you mess with me. First Mate Horrik: Bother someone else. First Mate Horrik: Keep walking landlubber. First Mate Horrik: I got a cannonball with your name on it. First Mate Horrik: Get over here and help me! First Mate Horrik: Captain...* First Mate Horrik: Opening fire! First Mate Horrik: Another landlubber broken. First Mate Horrik: Should check on the captain. First Mate Horrik: I smell troublemakers! First Mate Horrik: (laugh) Catch! First Mate Horrik: Smash, smash, smash! First Mate Horrik: No surrender, no quarter. First Mate Horrik: Leave the bodies as a warning (laugh) First Mate Horrik: You're making this worse for yourselves! First Mate Horrik: I'm gonna take you all with me!
* I know the “Captain…” line is not technically unused since it plays in the fractal, but it doesn’t play in the story so I’ve included it here.
