shout out to the people who can never have kids physically because their physical and mental health issues combined alone would put them at risk of serious harm or death if not on the right amount of pills at the right time, you guys are the real ones

⌜   ZOE KRAVITZ, NON BINARY, SHE / HER / THEY / THEM   |   truth hurts by lizzo, choleric, the philophobe   ⌟    ⏤   blink and you’ll miss MAKENA RENÉE THURMAN, the TWENTY SEVEN year old daughter of NEENA THURMAN ( & LOKI ) / NATHAN SUMMERS ! they’re a RECEPTIONIST at paragon academy and BOOKING AGENT & ACCOUNTANT at karma club, and i’ve always found them to be pretty INTUITIVE & STAUNCH, though i’ve heard that they can also be really IRASCIBLE & INSCRUTABLE. i don’t think getting their way is a smart thing to do - everyone knows that their ability is TYCHOKINESIS & LATENT TELEKINESIS. you can check out her stat page HERE.
she was BEAUTIFUL in the way a ( forest fire ) was beautiful:              something to be admired from a DISTANCE, not up CLOSE.
SECTION ONE OF THREE: BULLET POINT HISTORY trigger warning for talk of car crashes, alcohol, drugs and pregnancy
MAKENA RENÉE THURMAN. she was born by c section at 4:23 am on august 20th, 1992, for all intents and purposes the daughter born of the love shared between neena thurman and nathan summers - only the FAMILY ever REALLY knowing that in truth, she was something of their blessing, moreso than she was a MIRACLE. the techno-organic virus that infected nathan meant it was unlikely, if not flatout impossible, for he and neena to ever have a child of their own. they made the decision to go the route of sperm donation after all attempts ended the exact same way, and little makena was the result.
the truth of their circumstances was not a secret they felt was appropriate to hide from their daughters curious mind. even young, she had QUESTIONS, and to their credit, they gave her ANSWERS. the first time she asked she was four, and the question amounted to “why [she didn’t] have a younger brother or sister yet”. she LOVED hope - squealed with childish excitement every time her older sister so much as APPEARED around a corner, held onto every word she said, followed her everywhere that she went, had to be patted down for weapons every time she left. but she wanted to be a BIG sister, she said, sullenly, and nathan didn’t hesitate in explaining. MOMMY AND DADDY LOVE EACH OTHER VERY MUCH. WE ALWAYS HAVE. AND WE WANTED YOU SO MUCH THAT WE FOUND A WAY TO HAVE YOU, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T EASY. AND MAYBE SOMEDAY, WE’LL FIND A WAY TO GIVE YOU A YOUNGER BROTHER OR SISTER, TOO.
the next time the subject was broached, she was ten, and it was by her mother. neena sat her down to have the talk about the birds and the bees and after a previous nights discussion, had decided, with nathan, that it was time for makena to know DETAILS. she threw them in at the end. THAT’S WHAT DAD MEANT, WHEN HE SAID WE FOUND A WAY TO HAVE YOU. MY EGG, AND SOMEONE ELSE’S SPERM. YOU AREN’T HIS, BIOLOGICALLY, BUT THAT DOESN’T MAKE YOU ANY LESS OF OUR DAUGHTER.
and it was true. it ALWAYS had been. in spite of the fact that she was not born belonging to them both by blood, neena and nathan were HER PARENTS, mostly for better, and sometimes for worse. she grew up safe in the knowledge that she was LOVED beyond comprehension, and was allowed all the space that she needed, to grow and develop into a young woman who knew her own mind, first and foremost. they took in turns being the strict voice of reason, but MOSTLY, so long as she wasn’t taking the mickey, makena was allowed to make MISTAKES and learn from them. neither blew up, the first time they were called for her causing trouble in class and having to be removed. they sat her down to discuss WHY, and they worked to resolve her issues - which at the time, were to do with girls that wouldn’t BE NICE, and a teacher that refused to DISCIPLINE them. when she was scared to go to the doctors, they asked her WHY, and when she said it was because she didn’t like their USUAL, they simply changed. they made sure that makena was comfortable in expressing her thoughts and feelings, and ensured that she never thought twice about doing so. when she wanted to try a cigarette, she didn’t resort to joining friends behind the bike sheds, but simply asked whether she could. likewise, when she wanted to go ALL THE WAY with her first boyfriend, she told her mum and neena ensured the house was EMPTY - and after the breakup was there to stroke her hair and tell her that boys were rarely worth it. they were GOOD parents.
it was a double edged sword. neena and nathan taught makena to be INDEPENDENT, and this was a lesson they considered most important - because BOTH were aware that they wouldn’t ALWAYS be around. they were GOOD parents, but they also DIDN’T discipline her when it was seriously NEEDED, and they weren’t always such a steady presence in her life. sometimes, nathan would disappear into the timestream for weeks at a time, leaving her with neena. sometimes neena would take a job that required her to be gone for months, leaving her alone with nathan. sometimes BOTH had responsibilities to their teams that required them to leave TOGETHER, and though they entrusted makena to the care of xavier’s, she had been given too much freedom by them for too long to accept rules and regulations that came with living under those roofs. she caused TROUBLE. she got herself into STICKY SITUATIONS. makena had always been a girl too quick to react, and too willing to use her FISTS. they returned once to find that she had been literally locked in her room just hours before for everyone’s protection bar her own. they returned another time to discover that in their absence, she had run away from xavier’s a pro brotherhood rally - a trend that would continue for YEARS. neena and nathan operated often in shades of grey. the world was not black and white, and neither was their outlook upon it. makena took after THEM, more than they could have imagined.
she was ANGRY. she was resentful to her parents for leaving her BEHIND, and she found herself filling with rage each time she turned on the tv to see more and more people like her, like her family, like the POWERED individuals she could relate to, being prosecuted for being DIFFERENT. she acted out, because that was the logical next step - and in the process, she became the pain in her parents backsides. they were GOOD. but they were also all too quick to believe that makena could handle these long stints alone WELL. it was only when they started seeing her in the background of news reports and started receiving calls from xavier’sl for some new stunt she had pulled - such as the time she hung a crude “charles xavier, eat my ass” banner from the front of the school, or the time she turned all the ‘x’s’ on their uniforms into criss crossed dicks with sharpie - that they started to see one of their biggest parenting faults.
and then a phone call came that wasn’t about makena’s antics. and it scared them - it REALLY scared them, more than they’ve ever been able to SAY. she was YOUNGER than most of the group, on that fateful night. she had always gravitated towards the OLDER KIDS, always found herself getting along with them much BETTER. one had stolen a car from the garage, and they were all laughing and talking and singing along to music that was playing FAR TOO LOUD and they weren’t really focusing on the road,  which they SHOULD HAVE BEEN, because it was ICY, and because the fog was impossible. they drove off the side of the road. the car fell into the water, below. it broke through the layer of ice, shattering the windows enough that the ice cold water begun to spray in, and makena went into SHOCK. she doesn’t remember what happened. just the water. how she ended up with a lungful. how it was dark and unrelenting and she thought, THE WHOLE TIME, that she was ALREADY dead. she remembers the burn of her throat as she had thrown up the water that had been stealing her lifes breath away, and she remembers the fog clearing and the stars above her in the sky, and then after that, she doesn’t remember anything until she woke in the hospital with her mother and father sat on either side, grasping one hand each and PROMISING not to leave.
they kept the promise. for a WHILE, at least. a few months. and they were more strict with her, too. wouldn’t let her out without knowing where the end destination was and who she was going with. wouldn’t take her back answering even LESS so than usual. but they slipped up, eventually. when she was BETTER, when she had been for a WHILE, they started to ease themselves back into work - one would leave, then the other. and then, when both had to start leaving AT THE SAME TIME… well, the only LOGICAL way around fully breaking the promise they had made was to take her with them.
they had moved around a lot, when makena was younger. they had spent months living in different cities across the states, sometimes across the world - they ALWAYS came back home. now, it seemed as if they never WOULD. she was constantly shuttled between whoever had the most free time to spend with her, their time together as a family growing less and less. they said they kept her with them, said they kept moving her from school to school and place to place because they LOVED her and wanted to keep an EYE on her, but RESENTMENT grew in her heart, unbidden. she loved to be cultured, don’t get me wrong, loved to see the sights and experience what the WORLD had to offer - but she would have given anything to stand STILL, something she had never really realized she liked doing ‘til she couldn’t.
so she rebelled. she did what she was learning she was GOOD at. soon enough, she wasn’t leaving schools behind because they were upping sticks once again, but because she was getting FORCIBLY removed. she would sneak out of whatever house or apartment or studio flat they had for the time being, fake id in hand, and she would join friends that she wouldn’t have a week later at the seediest nightclubs they could find. her parents or parent, however it was set up for a time, would return home to discover that she hadn’t returned from school that day and instead chose to head to a rally. worse: more than once, they had come home to discover that makena had RUN AWAY, joining whichever group would TAKE her. her time on the streets was often short lived, but the girl who had always used her fists to solve her problems learnt, over time, an ART OF SURVIVAL. she had always been taught to be independent. she learnt, now, how to be STRONG.
and then she was eighteen. and she realized, as the first rally that she had attended since her birthday dissolved into a maddening sort of VIOLENCE, that her parents weren’t going to come and GET her, anymore. it wasn’t their JOB. she was an ADULT. she had to make ADULT choices, and when she returned home that night, battered and bruised, she informed them that she was LEAVING.
and to everyone’s SURPRISE, it wasn’t to join those insurgents that existed, out in the world. it wasn’t to become an EXTREMIST. makena decided, ON HER OWN, that she wanted to get an education - a steady, stable education, one that she wouldn’t have to always be running to catch up on. she found a little place of her own, she got herself settled, she started attending paragon academy - and she, to NO ONE’S surprise, kept up her regular ANTICS on the side. one grown up decision does not a grown up make, and makena couldn’t shake habits of her past. she was selfish, and reactive, and she had great difficulty in keeping herself in check - and with a pretty SEVERE partying habit also on the board, it goes without saying she got herself into quite a bit of trouble. she lost almost every job she held, in college, because she was FIRED - not because she WALKED, like she so often claims. she got suspended TWICE for brawling and for indecent exposure ( it was a dare ), respectively. she got kicked out of her first ever shared flat because she and her roommate had a disagreement that there was no going back from. and she, terrible as it sounds, loved every second of it. she loved to be free. she loved to do what SHE wanted. no longer living a life on whatever whim her parents had, they were able to once again develop a CLOSE relationship, and once again, felt comfortable in allowing her to make the mistakes she needed to make, and learn from them.
and then came her ex. her father might have said, at one point, that he was the biggest mistake his daughter ever made - and when ANGRY at him, she might have agreed. but the truth is, he came into kena’s life at a time when she didn’t really know she NEEDED someone, and he taught her… so much about herself. after her one SERIOUS relationship ended, kena had settled into a life of casual dating, because it fit who she WAS, or at least, who she has always presented herself as - a free spirited, free talking, wild hearted woman. and it was CASUAL with him, at least for a long while, but then came so much more love than she had ever thought she’d feel, and SO MUCH heartbreak, too. she should have known way back when that it was BECAUSE she loved him so much that it always hurt so bad, when they ARGUED - if their explosive conflicts could even be called so, sometimes. neither were perfect. neither was the relationship. but they always came back to one another.
and then - THEN came ZARA. she wasn’t a part of the PLAN that kena had for her life, not in the least. and when she thinks back to the day that she finally bought the test that her friend had been insisting on FOR DAYS, she remembers how she had sat on the bathroom floor, eyes tightly shut and her fingers crossed PAINFULLY, wishing and hoping and even PRAYING that what she knew was TRUE wasn’t - and she feels ASHAMED. she hadn’t wanted a baby. had never really thought of herself as cut from the cloth of mothers, and felt like she had too much left in life to do - too much to achieve, too much to see, too much to drink - before she could COMMIT to such a thing. she went through all the motions, she sat through the appointments, she grinned her way through the first scan, but she was SCARED and in her mind, ALONE. and then she felt a kick. just ONE. the baby had moved before - she’d felt it fluttering at times and thought how real it all was, and how out of her depth SHE was - but she was sitting on the couch one evening, watching the real housewives, and she had shouted something rude at the tv, and where her hand had been resting atop her so far, so small belly, she felt a tiny kick. and everything changed. EVERY SINGLE THING. it was like the world had shifted on its axis, and makena asked the bump she’d felt no real connection to, to ‘do it again’ and it DID, and once upon a time, she’d thought that she wouldn’t love anything more than she had loved HIM, but god, how wrong she had been. how STUPID, and how small minded, to ever think that ANYTHING would matter more than the little life that was growing INSIDE OF HER.
she promised her bump, every night before she fell asleep, that they would make it WORK. all of them. EVERYTHING. she was just finishing up her degree - she started sending out resumes immediately, to try and secure a job for when zara had come along, and she got LUCKY. the job as BOOKING AGENT, something she had always kind of WANTED, sort of fell into place. and she promised she’d sort herself out. and no matter what - no matter what happened between she and her ex, she knew both of them would do right by their bean.
zara thurman came into the world, and makena’s WHOLE LIFE changed. her lifestyle slowed down, big time. she settled into her nine to 10 jobs. her relationship with her boyfriend came to one, seemingly FINAL end. and she kept her PROMISE. they made it WORK. she learnt, quickly, she didn’t need to hit a club every night to be CONTENT - because staying home to read zara a book was just as THRILLING. she didn’t need to drink so much she couldn’t remember or take little pills that were offered at the bar, because getting home in one piece was a PRIORITY, now. she didn’t have to BRAWL. not as much, anyway. fight club came in handy, for a woman who had always found the answer laying on the other side of her fists. her job was satisfying, at least one of them. and she and her ex - they still had their MANY differences and disagreements, but they weren’t so BAD at the co-parenting thing, if makena said so herself.
things CHANGED. she learnt, fairly quickly, that change wasn’t a BAD thing.
SECTION TWO OF THREE: HEADCANONS
owns a two year old polish lowland sheepdog that she named “mr clean” because, and only because, he reminded her of a mop the first time that she ever saw him. insists that she adopted him from the pound with that name already ingrained in his memory and often will say she “tried to change his name, but he wasn’t having it”. is lying. loves him more than life itself, weird name and all.
tychokinesis ; the ability to manipulate probability, causing unlikely things to happen or likely things not to happen. like her mother before her, makena is something of a lady luck - however, her power manifested AFTER the car accident that could have easily claimed her life, and… she doesn’t really know about it. SOMETIMES, when she’s ANGRY, things will move. she’s always known she possesses a level of telekinesis. but she knows very little about her ability to manipulate probability, little enough that she doesn’t really know she HAS that power, and hasn’t really honed it.

A/N: Daddy Dean is literally the best thing on this world!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hunting and love just didn't go together. It was not a rule per say but everybody in this line of work knew that if a hunter allowed themselves to fall for someone, sooner or later, both their lives would be damned. And you knew it yourself, from the first moment you decided to do this, yet somehow you found yourself falling head over heels for him.
Settling wasn't his thing, and with this kind of job that the both of you had, you weren't made for that either. You never called it a relationship, although you really wished you could, and even if life – and again the job – had you drifting apart, you'd always find your way back to each other. Whether it was the bar, the police station, a crime scene caused by some angry werewolf, the end result was one. You'd always end up a tangled mess of limbs and bed sheets in his motel room just savoring each other, trying to take in as much as you could before the morning came and you had to drift apart again. Waiting to see each other again, promising to with every lingering touch and kiss.
Until that promise was broken. And as if your world hadn't already crumbled down when you saw his body in autopsy, as if you didn't already have enough drinks to kill yourself from the alcohol in your system, as if hunting every demon to get to the one that took him away from you wasn't enough... there was still one more thing coming.
Oh and if love and hunting didn't go together just wait until you tried kids and hunting. Speaking of which-
“He seems to like my trenchcoat.” Castiel's voice along with your son's squeal caught your attention and you were brought back to reality.
You chuckled as you set your book aside and got up, smiling as you approached the two of them sitting on the floor; most of your son's toys sprawled around them. Although he was mostly interested in the angel's trenchcoat and tie that with a few giggles he tried pulling on.
“And the tie as it seems.” you giggled, kneeling down in their level and your son's eyes were immediately on you as he still held the tie with his small fists.
“Finally found someone that appreciates Castiel's taste in clothes.” Sam said with a smirk, glancing from his computer at the three of you.
“Why? Don't you?” Castiel frowned deeply, tilting his head to look at the younger Winchester whose eyebrows shot up.
“Oh uh, yes of course Cas.” he said blinking and offering him a small smile.
“Try to seem a little more convincing, Sammy.” you said to Sam with a giggle and he shot you a bitch-face.
“Thanks a lot, (Y/n).” he huffed as with a chuckle you looked back down at your baby.
“Well, to be honest- how was it that Dean called Cas? Baby in a trenchcoat?” you giggled as Castiel gave you a look that just made you shrug “What? I am just saying, finally you have someone that relates to you.” you chuckled, tickling your son's belly and made him laugh even more.
“Well, I do think he likes me a lot.” Castiel said with a small shrug and you nodded your head softly.
“That I do believe too, it's your calmness I think.” you smiled, kissing your son's head as you lifted him slightly up so that he could stand on his feet. He couldn't walk yet but he had been trying to and slowly making progress in standing even for a few seconds. Your hands were on him all the time and when it wasn't you, because you had to be standing in front of him, it was either Mary, maybe Sam but more often-
“And here I thought it was all about him bringing back the tie.” Dean said with a scoff but smile as he walked in the room with a tray of food for everyone.
Dean. Oh Dean.
“I brought it back, as you say, because J likes playing with it.” Castiel said with a soft shrug and you chuckled as the tie fell from your son's small fist and he made grabby hands for it again, his feet wiggling slightly as a small whine left his lips.
“I think we all missed it a little too much, Cassie.” you winked at him, bringing your son closer to him and just occupyng yourself any way you could to not let your eyes linger on the older Winchester. He was bound to notice in the end and, as said so many times before, love and hunting didn't go together.
“I am glad you appreciate it, (Y/n).” he smiled at you “As I am really glad Jared appreciates it.” he let a soft chuckle out as your son giggled happily when he took hold of the angel's tie and along with his small fist he tried to put it in his mouth.
You were so glad he didn't have this love for Dean's guns, although the older Winchester still pretended to be a little mad about the love the baby had for his casettes. Key word: pretended. He could never be truly angry and you had seen the actually proud smile on his face when J squealed happily at the AC/DC casettes he picked that first time. And dear, you could never forget that sparkle of happiness in Dean's eyes when he told Jared that Zepellin rules and your son grinned and clapped his hands in approval.
“That's it kiddo!” he had said in such a proud father voice it warmed your heart and went on to speaking more about his precious car and everything in it.
“Here” you heard Dean's rough voice next to you and you almost jumped at the proximity. He wasn't looking at you though, mostly giving Castiel a glare. One you didn't understand that much because it looked a little possessive and it confused you because you were only friends.
Your son made a bubbly sound and caught his attention though and he looked at the two of you, finally a smile forming once more on his lips “Ya enjoy kiddo. And when you get older, I'll teach you all about pie and burgers.” he ruffled his hair and you laughed as your son gave him a crooked smile, looking more excited without entirely understanding what Dean was saying.
“I'm sure he can't wait.” you chuckled, sitting down on the floor so that J could be sitting on your lap and you took the feeding bottle from Dean's hand. You couldn't help but feel your heart swell at how he wanted to teach him things like a good father would. But J wasn't his son, and that you couldn't forget.
“Thank you.” you said softly, looking up at him as he winked at you with that charming smile of his.
Your son wiggled a little in his place, letting go of Castiel's tie and extending his hands to Dean, probably expecting him to pick him up, but he didn't. He only gave the little boy a smile and turned to his brother and mother as they each took their own plates.
“I've made some for you too, if you want?” he told you and you gave him a soft smile.
“Once feeding duty's over, sure.” you smiled, fixing J in your arms.
“I could do that if you want, wouldn't be a problem.” he didn't miss a beat to suggest but you shook your head with a soft chuckle.
“No, I got this.” you whispered as you helped your son with the milk. Castiel in the meantime finding an interest in one of Jared's toys and inspecting it with narrowed eyes and a really focused expression that made you chuckle.
“Wait-” Sam's voice made you glance at him to see him look at his brother with a perplexed expression “Did you really make that?”
“And checked the temperature. Why? I know how to take down a freaking wendigo, what's so hard with preparing milk?” Dean shrugged, not missing the chance to stuff food in his mouth.
“But Dean-” Sam chuckled, pleasantly surprised “You didn't even know how a diaper works to begin with, and now you know all about babies?”
“What?” he asked through a mouth full “I paid close attention to how (Y/n) does it and it ain't that freaking hard, man. I mean women may just have it in them, it comes naturally sure, but I sure as hell could try. Maybe not as easy as putting a gun together but- just a little more effort and I'm gonna be a pro!” he said proudly and you grinned as you looked from them, down to your son who was drinking his milk in content, rubbing his small eyes with his baby fists because he was obviously getting sleepy.
“A pro?” Sam breathed out, looking at you and Jared “Oh wow.”
“He already is.” you whispered to your son who looked at you with big hazel eyes, the hints of forest green in them making your heart swell “Isn't he?”
And you didn't take your eyes off of him, missing the look Dean gave you and the soft smile on his face.
~*~
The sound of your son crying caught your attention and every instinct in you just screamed for you to wake up. You bolted from your bed, without a second thought you threw the blankets off of you and padded your way out of your room to your son's.
When you first moved in in the bunker you were already four months pregnant. You had known the Winchesters for years yet it surprised you how good they were to you and how much of a family member they considered you to be, not that you saw them any less of that, just like the fact that they took so well to your pregnancy. You didn't hunt during your pregnancy, not even simple salt and burns because Dean wouldn't have any of it, and you decided to stay back in the bunker and do research just to feel a little more useful, other than cooking and cleaning. Which they really appreciated so much more than you expected, weirdly enough.
You struggled at first, and so did they with all the hunting and preparing for a kid while taking care of the mess of hormones you were, but they were willing to take care of the both of you becase you were family and nothing would change it. Their words. You seriously didn't know how Dean could put up with you all that time as you thought about it now, but it was adorable. Besides, the moment you confessed to Dean how scared you were about all of it, he didn't even give it a second thought and actually started preparing a room for the baby. A room that suspciously enough was close to not only your but his room as well.
Dean had been there for your every need, running even in the middle of the night to get you something to eat because your cravings just wouldn't let you sleep. It didn't help that you'd always had a crush on him, he had to be so caring of you and then your baby boy that he just made you fall head over heels in love with him. And you were damned, because every time you walked in on him talking to your son you wished so bad you could have a normal life and a family with him. Just like now.
“Dean?” you asked groggily, rubbing your eyes with the back of your hand trying to get the sleep out of them.
“Hey, it's ok lil one. I got this, just a little more, wait up- There, I got!” he laughed in trumph and you couldn't hold back a giggle.
“Oh hey.” he looked at you from your son's changing table.
“What are you doing here?” you asked with a soft smile, resting your weight on the doorframe.
“What does it look like?” he asked with a smile as he threw the dirty diaper away.
“You couldn't sleep?” you asked, still surprised how he had gotten here faster than you. No matter the practice you'd taken these past 8 months after you'd had your son, it still took you some good time to get to him, be it that you loved your sleep so much and all. But thing was, Dean loved sleeping just as much as you did so how could he do this?
“Nah, I was asleep but he woke me up. Didn't hesitate to come see what the fuss was about and as expected- he had a surprise waiting.” he chuckled as he fixed Jared's clothes.
You stared at him in awe for a moment “Dean” you whispered and he looked at you “Do you seriously hear what you're saying?”
“Oh shut up.” he shook his head, trying to seem offended but he was actually smiling as he picked your son up “You're just jealous I'm better than you at this. And faster.” he said with a smirk as you scoffed, but still smiled. You took your son's small hand in your and gave it a soft kiss as your other hand rested on Dean's shoulder as he held the baby in his arms, softly rocking him.
“Yeah, you're right.” you whispered “I am jealous you are a better mom than me.” you said with a smirk and he rolled his eyes at you “But seriously, you have become great in changing him Dean, maybe we should really make this a permanent thing?” you asked with a smirk.
He laughed “Is it not already?”
You smiled softly “It has, and I thank you so much for this Dean. I don't know what I would do without you. You saved me. You saved us both.” you looked at your baby with a smile.
“Don't say that.” he shook his head “I want to, that's why I am doing this. Besides-” he shrugged “It was my turn now, so you should just go to bed. Get some rest (Y/n), you deserve it and you need it. I got this.”
“I know you do, D.” you whispered “But we really don't have turns. You are not responsible for him as-”
“Don't you dare complete that sentence.” he gave you a hard glare “I am just as responsible for this kid as you. End of discusion, and yes it was my turn. Just go back to sleep, (Y/n) it's fine.”
“Fine..” you sighed, giving him a shy smile, his words making your heart swell “But I am awake, and I just wanted to see him a little too anyway.” you said with a small frown and he smiled.
“You're such a mom.”
“He's my baby.” you pouted “Don't judge me.”
“I am not.” he grinned at you “But just so you know, he still likes me the most.” he said, eyes fixed on the baby as you rested your head on Deans shoulder, your eyes fixed on J as well.
“Yeah, I know.” you breathed out, maybe the quiecy and calmness lulling you back to sleep as well. That and the soft hum that came from Dean. Boy you'd give anything to hear him sing to your son again. The first and only time you had heard it happen was the moment that you realized you were in love with him.
But your son letting out a small whine caught your attention and your back straightened when his face scrunched up in a sad expression before he started crying again “Oh oh, no little guy. No, hey. It's ok now. What?” Dean glanced at you, a little worried “What is it now?”
“Well, he is clean and has fresh clothes, you gave him some water so I'm guessing he is hungry.” you chuckled, slowly reaching out to take him from Dean “I'll take it from here.”
“Are you sure?” he asked, still not liking the fact that he was crying.
“Yeah, Dean.” you giggled “That's the only thing left and with all the things you two have in common, no surprise he'd be hungry.” you said and a soft chuckle left Dean's lips as he finally saw you hold your son close to you, rocking him softly to soothe him down.
“I think I can relate.” he rubbed J's back softly, eyes soft as he watched him get more comfortable in your arms. He was slightly jealous but truth was if he got to have your arms wrapped around him he'd feel like he was in heaven himself. But he couldn't afford to think about that at the moment.
“You know-” he started again “I still don't understand it.”
“Understand what?” you asked with a chuckled as you unclasped your bra with one hand and you let it slide down from under your shirt, placing it on the small table in the corner next to the armchair you usually sat on to feed your son or spend some time with him. You didn't even realize what you'd done until you noticed they way Dean's eyebrows shot up and his lips fell apart that a blush started rising on your cheeks. It had become almost a habit so you didn't even realize it at first.
“Dean?” you asked gently and he blinked, licking his lips and forcing himself to look anywhere but you and maybe your bra to get a better look of it. Well that was interesting.
“It's just-” he shook his head “How come you get all the boob bonding and I get stuck with poop duty?” he asked and you giggled at the expression on his face.
“You said it. It was your turn.” you smirking, winking “Besides, I don't know if you have noticed it but-” you patted his chest “There's a little bit of a technical issue here.” you giggled.
“Oh ye-yeah, right.” he laughed with a shake of his head “I'll have to agree on that.”
“Probably” you chuckled, siting on the armchair and slowly unbuttoning your shirt- well, a flannel of Dean's you had borrowed long ago and never bothered to return “You want anything else?” you raised an eyebrow, looking at him through your eyelashes, trying to stiffle a giggle. No matter how many times he had walked in on you feeding your son he would never get over the embarassment.
“Oh uh no.” he cleared his throat, his voice suddenly rough “I'll just- I better get going. Night (Y/n). G'Night, buddy.” he came closer, leaning down to kiss your son's forehead and J smiled up at him.
“Goodnight, Dean.” you said softly, giving him a smile. And with one he returned he decided to leave. Reluctantly so. Very reluctantly.
~*~
“Dean, keys?” Castiel asked as Sam and Mary carried their duffel bags. The older Winchester threw the keys to the angel before turning back to you again.
“And if you need anything, just call me, ok? I mean I am gonna call the moment we get to the motel anyway, and in the first gas stop too and-”
“Dean” you giggled, balancing your baby boy in your arms as he fidgeted and played with his toy “We are going to be just fine, I promise. Alright, maybe we're gonna miss the best diaper changer we've ever met but-” you snickered as he huffed and rolled his eyes.
“I'm not joking.” he said in a rough voice, placing a hand on J's small back “I just want to make sure you are gonna be alright, that's all.”
“I know, Dean.” you smiled gently “Maybe we're gonna miss you a little but we can video chat at some point hm? That will probably calm you two boys a little right?” you grinned as you looked between the two of them as your son rubbed his eyes.
“That could do.” he chuckled a little nervously “And I- Sorry if I am a bit overprotective but it's been a while since we have to be gone for this long for a hunt and Jared's grown up and-”
“I know, D.” you smiled “I understand, but don't worry. Time's gonna pass by very fast and you'll be back before you realize it.” you glanced at your son who looked up at the two of you with big awe-filled eyes, lips slightly apart as he fidgeted with his toy.
“Alright, car's loaded.” Mary said as she came next to Dean, who straightened his back and cleared his throat.
“Take care, (Y/n), and if you need us to get you anything call.” she gave you a soft hug, ruffling Jared's hair after that.
“Just the usual, Mary, but if it's something else I definitely will.” you nodded your head as you proceeded to give Sam and Cas a hug, each of them giving your baby a smile.
“Just please, (Y/n), don't take over a minute to answer the phone or miss a call because he will bite my ear off because of his worry.” Sam said with a chuckle as the older Winchester shot him a glare.
“I'll try not to, Sammy.” you giggled.
“No, I'm serious. Last time you missed that call he was on the verge of taking the car and just driving back to you in the middle of the freaking night. Because oh wow who would have thought? You were asleep!” Sam exclaimed as Dean had enough and just hit him the back of his head.
“Are you done?” he growled and Sam huffed.
“Yeah” he looked at you “Bye (Y/n), take care and relax. Bye J.” gave you a kiss on the cheek and Dean didn't waste a minute to push him away.
“You too Sammy.”
Dean was last, and it still felt like there were so many things he wanted to tell you but he unfortunately didn't have any more time. He huffed, watching his brother make room for the two of you.
“Promise you're gonna call?” he asked and you smiled softly, nodding your head.
“Absolutely, Dean. Now come here.” you extended one hand for him to hug you and he did just that. Maybe his arms lingered a little more than they should around you. And even when he pulled away, his face stayed pretty close to yours, lips almost inches apart and it made your heart beat rise up.
“Take care, yeah?” you whispered and he gave you a half smile, nodding his head.
“Always.” he said in rough voice, looking down at your son “You take care too, ok?
“Always” you said back and he smiled, glancing at you before he held your son's head and leaned down to kiss the top of it, making him giggle.
“Ya take care of your mama, alright kiddo?” he asked, not really expecting a response but your son did grin at him which made Dean chuckle.
“I'll take that as a yes.” he rubbed his head “That's my boy.” he grinned full of pride as he looked at the two of you, his eyes locking with yours as he cupped your face and leaned down to kiss your forehead. His lips lingered over your skin a lot more than they should.
He didn't want to let go, and he hated to admit it to himself. He just didn't want to leave you, he didn't want to leave his family back for however long that was going to be. Wait what? Family?
.
..
“Are you sure about this?” Mary whispered to her younger son.
“Absolutely, come on mom. Let's go, let them have some time to their own. I'll text him later, it's not like he will realize it that we've left anytime soon. He's too occupied.”
“Dean's gonna be pissed though.” she noted.
“Just for a few minutes. He'll be over it the moment he realized he won't have to leave them.” Sam shrugged “Just some time with his family, we both know that he wants it more than hunting at the moment. And it's very obvious.” he said.
“Well, what can I say-” she looked at her older son and the small baby smile at each other, Dean looked so emotional as he looked between you and Jared “Maybe, we just found out we have another Winchester here after all.”

Is abortion the only pro-life issue?
Tumblr media
Is abortion the only pro-life issue?  This isn't the first time I've written about abortion.  Or about other issues that should be of concern to Christians.  But it hit me during a conversation earlier today.  Why is it that so many Christians make abortion the litmus test - seemingly the only pro-life issue for Christians?  It makes no sense to me.  None at all. Is abortion the only pro-life issue? is article #1 in the series: Abortion vs Pro-life Issues Series. Click button to view titles for entire series Is abortion a pro-life issue?
Tumblr media
Well, yes, abortion is a pro-life issue.  But is it the only pro-life issue?  We'll go through the abortion part of what I believe pro-life should be about.  In quite a bit of detail.  Not from the medical side.  Nothing gory.  Also nothing on when a fetus has a so-called moment where it becomes a living person. Instead, this is strictly a Biblical viewpoint of both the woman (or girl) having the abortion.  And also the Christian whose primary goal is to stop the abortion from taking place. If a woman has an abortion, obviously there will be no living baby as a result of the pregnancy.  I leave it to your conscience - something between you and whatever "god" you believe in.  For the Christian reader though - this is between you and Jesus. So, assuming that most Christians consider this to be killing, murder, ending a potential life, whatever you'd like to call it - you most likely do consider abortion to be a sin. But what about that sin?  Will Jesus forgive a woman for having an abortion?  With apologies to some Catholics who think the answer is no - sorry but the Biblical answer is yes.  No, the Bible doesn't say that anywhere.  You won't find the word abortion in the Bible.  However, consider a couple passages. Is abortion murder First of all, if you think abortion is murder, which most Christians probably do, then what about when Jesus said: Is considering abortion the same as murder? Guess what?  Remember this part of what Jesus said?   22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. Sure, we remember the murder part.  Most of us have never murdered anyone.  But how many of us can say honestly, to God, that we've never done the other things?  We'd all better hope Jesus forgives every one of those things. Also consider this passage.  For the Catholic readers, I have something following the passage to more clearly define the difference between mortal and venial sins. Can someone who had an abortion be forgiven? There's a lot of good stuff in that passage, but for this topic, notice: Mt 12:31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Every sin will be forgiven, except one - blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The Greek word for blaspheme that Matthew wrote is: 988 βλασφημία n f. From 989; TDNT 1:621; TDNTA 107; GK 1060; 19 occurrences; AV translates as “blasphemy” 16 times, “railing” twice, and “evil speaking” once. 1 slander, detraction, speech injurious, to another’s good name. 2 impious and reproachful speech injurious to divine majesty.  Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship. So let's remember that, and also look at something Paul wrote. Living as Children of Light Eph 4:17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. Eph 4:20 You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21 Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Eph 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin” : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. Eph 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Eph 5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. ... Are there other sins committed in the abortion / anti-abortion process? Once again, there's a lot in that passage - and I even left off the last portion since it wasn't needed for context.  However, notice this paragraph: Eph 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Paul wrote:  do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.  In his book The Forgotten God, Francis Chan views this as refusing the promptings of the Holy Spirit too many times.  Not like there's an absolute number, but when it gets to the point where the routine normal thing to do is saying no to God.  I really like the book - and I agree that saying no too often would grieve the Holy Spirit. Keep in mind that we are to be disciples of Jesus, followers.  And that the Holy Spirit, as Paul also writes, is the mind of Christ.  Therefore, continuously saying no to the Holy Spirit amounts to essentially refusing to follow Jesus. That leads to a conclusion about the relationship between the two passages we just looked at - one by Jesus and one by Paul.  But let's look at the Greek word that we read as "grieve". 3076 λυπέω v. From 3077; TDNT 4:313; TDNTA 540; GK 3382; 26 occurrences; AV translates as “be sorrowful” six times, “grieve” six times, “make sorry” six times, “be sorry” three times, “sorrow” three times, “cause grief” once, and “be in heaviness” once. 1 to make sorrowful. 2 to affect with sadness, cause grief, to throw into sorrow. 3 to grieve, offend. 4 to make one uneasy, cause him a scruple.  Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship. So - if we compare the two passages, and the two Greek words (not necessarily the current meaning of the English words) - it seems reasonable that grieve the Holy Spirit is at least part of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. Frequently saying "no!" to Jesus seems to fit under evil speaking.  Seems like it to me, anyway. Next, for the Catholic readers.  You may think that mortal sins are not forgiven.  The excerpt below is from the second edition of The Catechism of the Catholic Church. IV. THE GRAVITY OF SIN: MORTAL AND VENIAL SIN 1854 Sins are rightly evaluated according to their gravity. The distinction between mortal and venial sin, already evident in Scripture, became part of the tradition of the Church. It is corroborated by human experience. 1855 Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God's law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him. Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it. 1856 Mortal sin, by attacking the vital principle within us - that is, charity - necessitates a new initiative of God's mercy and a conversion of heart which is normally accomplished within the setting of the sacrament of reconciliation: When the will sets itself upon something that is of its nature incompatible with the charity that orients man toward his ultimate end, then the sin is mortal by its very object . . . whether it contradicts the love of God, such as blasphemy or perjury, or the love of neighbor, such as homicide or adultery. . . . But when the sinner's will is set upon something that of its nature involves a disorder, but is not opposed to the love of God and neighbor, such as thoughtless chatter or immoderate laughter and the like, such sins are venial.  1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent."  1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother." The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger. 1859 Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God's law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin. 1860 Unintentional ignorance can diminish or even remove the imputability of a grave offense. But no one is deemed to be ignorant of the principles of the moral law, which are written in the conscience of every man. The promptings of feelings and passions can also diminish the voluntary and free character of the offense, as can external pressures or pathological disorders. Sin committed through malice, by deliberate choice of evil, is the gravest. 1861 Mortal sin is a radical possibility of human freedom, as is love itself. It results in the loss of charity and the privation of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace. If it is not redeemed by repentance and God's forgiveness, it causes exclusion from Christ's kingdom and the eternal death of hell, for our freedom has the power to make choices for ever, with no turning back. However, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God. 1862 One commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law, or when he disobeys the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent. 1863 Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul's progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God's grace it is humanly reparable. "Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness."  While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins. But do not despise these sins which we call "light": if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them. A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fills a river; a number of grains makes a heap. What then is our hope? Above all, confession. 1864 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven." There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss. Now, having said all that, notice #1864, at the end of it all. What is the real unforgivable sin in Catholicism? The Catholic Catechism uses the same verse as I did, from the passage we looked at, titled Murder in the NIV.  The very same one.  And if you read the intent of the Catechism, rather than getting stuck on what we might think it says, the result is exactly what I pointed out earlier. There is one - repeat one - unforgivable sin.  The mortal sins talked about in the Catholic church are the ones that lead us to a point of saying "no!" to the Holy Spirit.  Saying "no!" to Jesus.  It's not any one, two, or any other absolute limiting number of "mortal" sins that's unforgivable.  Rather, the unforgivable thing is when we start saying "no!" to the Holy Spirit without even a second thought. Finally. I also want to point out what the Catechism says about venial sins. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God's grace it is humanly reparable. "Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness."  Venial sin, in and of itself, isn't something that will separate us from God.  However, they can have the effect of leading us to think they're pretty much nothing to worry about.  We just commit them, time after time after time ...  Next thing you know, we're on to bigger and worse things.  Then we end up saying "no!" more and more often.  Sound familiar?  It's about the condition of our hearts, not about the actual sin.  Why isn't it about the sin?  Simple, it's because every sin is forgivable, except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.  Period.   What about the deadly sins? I have to say, this has been a good refresher for me.  Having left the Catholic Church many, many years ago, it's hard to remember all the gory details of something I no longer follow.   Anyway, here's the thing on those so-called deadly sins, from Christianity.com. The seven deadly sins, as identified by Pope Gregory 1 in the late sixth century, are considered categories of sin: pride, envy, wrath, gluttony, lust, sloth, and greed. Many think the deadly seven are recorded in the Bible. Surprisingly, even though each of the seven is a sin, this list is not contained in Scripture. The history of the sin categorization began in the year 400. Evargius Ponticus a fourth century monk, described eight evils to resist. Two centuries later Pope Gregory 1, refined the inventory to seven. Almost every sin can be placed in one of these seven categories. Isaiah 14:13-14 tells us pride and selfishness are related to each of the seven and are viewed as the root causes of all sin. The Christianity site also addresses the question of whether these "deadly" sins can be forgiven. Yes, God can forgive all sins. No sin is greater or more deadly than another (Romans 6:23). There are some sins that bear more earthly consequences than others. For instance, murder has larger consequences than sinful anger. No matter the sin, the eternal consequences are the same— a separation from a holy God. But no sin too big or too bad that God cannot forgive (1 John 1:9). Rather than make you look them up, here are the referenced verses, with the entire passage for context. Slaves to Righteousness Ro 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. Ro 6:19 I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Again, the specific verse is the last one: 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The wages of sin is death.  Ultimately, my question is going to be about who is / are the sinner(s) in this whole abortion process - whether one actually happens or not. What's the difference between actually having an abortion versus considering one? In that light, let's also not forget what Jesus said about thinking something evil versus actually doing it. So adultery isn't really any different from looking at a woman the wrong way.  In that light, is having an abortion any different from seriously considering having one?  You may think, what's the big deal?  Surely the woman who actually had an abortion is worse than the one who didn't.  However, Jesus says that's not true.  Both have the same impact.  If anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart then it only seems reasonable that anyone who seriously considers having an abortion has already had an abortion in their heart. And if that's the case, what has been accomplished by preventing the abortion?  Some Christians might feel better about themselves for having prevented one, but isn't the "heart" of the problem long before the abortion actually takes place?  Hold that thought as we continue.   Here's the other passage referenced in the excerpt about the deadly sins.  The full passage is even longer, but I've kept enough of it go give context to what John is saying.  Remember - the quoted verse is 1Jn 1:9. Walking in the Light 1Jn 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1Jn 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. 1Jn 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1Jn 2:3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1Jn 2:7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 1Jn 2:9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him. ...  Are there unconfessed sins in the abortion / anti-abortion process? In light of what we've seen, and of what's coming next, pay attention to that verse: 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. My question will be - who has sinned in the process of having an abortion?  And just as importantly, in the ways that Christians often act in the process of trying to prevent an abortion?  And while we're at it - after the abortion?  Or even after an abortion doesn't take place?  Food for thought.  Some of those will be addressed later in this series. I said at the very beginning that we'd look at two things in here.   ... this is strictly a Biblical viewpoint of both the woman (or girl) having the abortion.  And also the Christian whose primary goal is to stop the abortion from taking place. So after all this, what about the Christian whose primary goal is to stop the abortion?  If that's you, I have a question for you.  By now, you know I consider abortion to be a sin.  You also know that I believe the Bible says even considering having an abortion is a sin.  And that the penalties for either one - considering an abortion and actually having one - are the same?  I wrote a little about that in If you stop abortion – so what?  I'll be going into greater detail later in this series.  Just want to get my viewpoint up front right away.  Before I ask that question.  Because the question is - do you think there's any sin involved in preventing an abortion and then walking away?  Depending on the statistics you read, it seems that about half of the pregnancies are done by unwed mothers.  About 3/4ths of the total number of abortions are for poor people.  Based on the numbers, many of those unwed mothers are, therefore, also poor. Conclusion - Is abortion the only pro-life issue? Now, consider something Jesus said. I don't want you to get lost in the weeds here, but there's something about when Jesus said  that you may not be aware of.  It's not obvious in the English translation.   You probably think it only says not to prevent the little children from coming to Jesus.  In the Greek, it actually says we should help them.  If we think about that for a moment - it actually makes more sense that we should help them. Of course, where it gets really messy is when we consider who is the "child".  Of course, in my discussion - it's not the fetus / baby.  It's the mother.  The mother who wants to follow Jesus - but is in a place where she doesn't know what to do.  She's not married.  She's too poor to support a baby.  And she can't work two or three part-time low paying jobs and still take care of her baby.  She doesn't know what to do.  She doesn't really want to have an abortion.  But doesn't know what else to do, because the Christians are screaming at her to not have the abortion.  But then if she has the baby, she also knows those many of those same Christians have, under the name of their political party, made it pretty much impossible for her to support the child.  And, few of them will offer any kind of help. Tell me.  Who all sinned in that scenario? We'll get into the answers to that question in the next part of this series on abortion. If you didn’t think the march was for you, it was, you just don’t realize it.
If you didn't think the march was for you, it was, you just don’t realize it.
If you had told me I would have a possibly lethal pregnancy shortly after I turned 26 years old, there's no way I would have believed you. Things in pregnancy while you are young are supposed to go smoothly. Or so we are taught to believe. I used to think most pregnancy problems or chromosome issues happened after the age of 35. Or at least that has become the norm with medical intervention. The mortality rate for women and children revolving around births has decreased immensely over the decades of science and study.
But there are a lot of things we still don’t acknowledge in our modern day culture. Things that should be part of the conversation as we move forward with the new knowledge we have and how it forms our decisions in every day life as we propel ourselves toward being more sophisticated as a leading nation.
Some people like to complain that the march wasn’t for them because they are “pro-life.”
Guess what? We are all pro-life, so let’s just move on from that rhetoric. The way I see it is we are all pro-life, and then there are sub-categories below it of pro-choice and anti-choice. Either you have a wide knowledge and understanding that every person is very different and medical complications can be vary in scale, and this is an issue that isn’t so black and white, so we have to respect those differences and let a doctor guide a patient through their difficult circumstances. OR you have a fundamental lack of understanding of the complexities of pregnancy and women’s health, so you jumped on board the “pro-life” rhetoric because you don’t want to be “pro-death,” so you feel more comfortable in that zone. But that’s a really naive stance to take because by doing so, you don’t even know what you don’t know, and you don’t even realize you are campaigning against yourself and are endangering lives by trying to make laws based on fear.
The main argument I hear from the “anti-choice” people (that is what I will call you for the sake of this piece) is that you have a religious standpoint you cling to that revolves around the idea that man shouldn’t determine when death calls, only God should. But this is a really poor argument because for 1) you are usurping and assuming you know how your god thinks and behaves, and 2) what about the life of the mother? I’ve heard that the Catholic viewpoint is to save the child and not the mother—which for me holds no weight in rational thinking. Especially if the baby was going to die anyway, why would you not save the mom? And who are you to speak for your god? And that’s all fine if you want to live by those standards, but who are you to force those views on other people with different belief systems? We are a pluralistic nation after all.
The point is, you have the option to choose to let the mother die and save the baby, or you have the option to wait out a pregnancy that may be of risk…you have the option because women spoke out and marched for you to still be able to keep your stance. Taking away the right for a mother to choose her own life over her child’s life by being “anti-choice” is incredibly selfish, and dangerous.
And guess what? You might be taking away your own right to choose your life to live as a result of taking a stance like this. You taking this standpoint of letting laws dictate women’s health, could be the thing that kills you. Or the thing that kills your daughter or the partner of your son or daughter. That’s the part you are forgetting. That’s the human element you are choosing not to acknowledge.
Did you know you could get pregnant with odd, but rare, bad luck circumstances where the pregnancy actually turns into cancer? Did you know you can have a pregnancy where there is actually no fetus that grows? Just an empty sack of amniotic fluid that keeps growing and spiking your hcg levels. I didn’t. Not until I had a pregnancy like that. Abortion actually is just a medical term for miscarriage. It’s a word that has been abused and thrown around to insult already pained women. But did you know that you can have a “missed-abortion” where your body doesn’t miscarry the dead fetus and can poison you? I didn’t, until I had a pregnancy like that. My body apparently wanted a baby so badly it clung to whatever life form there was…even when there wasn’t a life form. And I needed medical intervention.
Here’s the other thing you aren’t taking into consideration those of you in the “anti-choice” category. You aren’t considering the emotional and mental health of the individuals involved. And I make it plural, because it is a family decision…a family’s overall health to be considered. You don’t know what trauma they’ve had prior to these horrible pregnancies, you don’t know how many pregnancies they had like this repetitively reliving the horror and disappointment…it takes a toll. You don’t know what this new trauma might trigger, you don’t know if carrying out a pregnancy might lead to suicide because it’s too emotionally painful to bear. You don’t know what the father wants. If there is already an existing sibling, will the parents be left as shells of themselves for those kids? Will their existing kids be damaged by their circumstances? There’s a lot to consider. It isn’t so simple.
And it could be you that faces it. And then tell me, if you have taken away the right to medical treatments due to law, and if you now stand in these circumstances of dangerous pregnancies, are you still standing by your religious views that this is your time for death and you don’t want to intervene? Would you be ok with watching your impending death, or wait for a possible miracle and then spread your story representing us poorly by saying “it could happen to you too…god could save your life,” offering false hope.
And if that is the case, why couldn’t you just simply say, “this is how it was for me…I was lucky…but it’s very different for everyone, and I can understand why laws shouldn’t play a role in the family dynamics of health care in this way.”
I’m not trying to scare anyone about pregnancy, what we have gone through is not the majority. Triploidy is rare. Molar pregnancies are rare. In fact, it’s so rare that it’s shifted our perspective for everything now when it comes to statistics. If the pregnancies we’ve had are less than 1% of all pregnancies everywhere, and most of those don’t make it into the second trimester, they only know because they tested miscarriage tissue to gain statistics…that means really just a handful of us in this particular instance actually experienced circumstances like we have. But it’s still worth fighting for because it sucks. And nobody needs to make it suck even more than it already does.
Now anytime we are given odds or statistics, we shy away from it. “Oh, you need sinus surgery, but there’s a risk of 1/3,000 that they could puncture your brain and leak fluid.” Awesome, no thanks, that will probably happen to me…because I won the lottery of less than 1% world wide for child loss…so no thank you, I can’t take that risk.
If you didn’t think the march was for you, you are wrong. It was and is for you. I hope you never go through what my husband and I have gone through. But if you do, know that we have marched for you and fought for you in order to face it as gracefully as you can muster through all the shock, PTSD, the heartbreak, and confusion. If or when your religious rhetoric fails you, and you change your mind and want to fight for your life instead, we will be here for you. You will have those options. Or if you choose to honor your stance and say goodbye to your time in this world and leave your spouse or children behind because you think that is your god’s will for you, we will be here for your family after you pass. Because that is your right. Being pro-choice still gives you that right…you aren’t losing anything. But by being anti-choice, you take a great deal away from families facing pregnancies like I have. And I can’t stay silent about that. It would dishonor what I’ve been through. It would dishonor my daughter’s life and story.
Here’s the thing, if you are anti-choice, I ask that you do show up at the next march. I will save a spot for you. Because I want you to see the faces and hear the stories of who you hurt with your rhetoric and votes and desired laws. I want you to bring humanity back to your soul. I want you to connect with us. Because at some point in your life, you or someone very close to you, may find yourselves in similar devastating circumstances that offer enlightenment, and some day, you may really experience the weight of what those laws actually meant for America.
Mary Oliver says it best, “Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable.”
And I will leave you with these closing words by Mary Oliver, because I think it sums up my intention nicely,
“I tell you this to break your heart, by which I mean only that it break open and never close again to the rest of the world.”
I hope we can spread the empathy, connectedness, and protection, and comfort. We need to safeguard what we want America to be. We need to break hearts.

Before we go any further, I should note that I am unapologetically pro-choice. I’ve been pro-choice for as long as I can remember. I recall thinking women should be able to have an abortion, if they want one, when I was just eight year old (1972-73).
(New Zealand’s Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Bill was making its way through parliament at the time. It was naturally controversial, and was in the news a lot. Thus, I was aware of the issue.)
As far as I’m concerned, if you oppose abortion, don’t have one. That’s your choice. But you don’t, or at least you shouldn’t, have the right to tell someone else what to do with their body. Even worse, you shouldn’t have the right to force your beliefs onto another person. I think it’s appalling that there are actually laws that make abortion illegal in so many countries.
(One of those countries is my own: New Zealand. However, there’s a criteria allowing abortion in our law that almost all doctors interpret extremely liberally. As a result, abortion is freely available in our public hospitals. Further, a separate privacy law introduced in the 1980s specifically states parents do not have to give permission, or receive notification, in relation to contraception or abortion for minors.)
When I was a child, it just seemed fair to me. As I got older, and got to know more about the subject, my position became stronger and stronger. My opinion is now supported by multiple data, much of which I hope to cover in this post.
Now, on with the show.
  Abortion and US Law
In 1973, in a Supreme Court ruling known as Roe v. Wade, US women had their right to an abortion established by law. However, ever since there have been attempts to get that right taken away again. Republicans have adopted this cause as their own. Thus where they control the state government (red states), women’s right to an abortion is more at risk.
Four years after Roe v. Wade, a law known as the Hyde Amendment came into being. It meant that federal money could not be spent on abortions except in the cases of rape, incest, or if the life of the mother was in danger.
This is obviously an absolute disgrace for multiple reasons, but there are two that I think are the more important than the others.
1. The Most Vulnerable Will Be Affected the Most
Firstly, it means that if you’re vulnerable in any way, it’s much harder to get an abortion. So this law disproportionately affects women of colour, young women, those with a disability, etc. In short, those women who, in general, will have the most difficulty caring for a child. (Women who can afford to do so will simply go to another state to have their abortion.) It means many women will either be forced to continue with a pregnancy which may be physically or mentally dangerous or, in their desperation, they will feel forced to resort to dangerous abortion methods.
Some lawmakers, in their complete lack of compassion or understanding, have even introduced laws to make having an abortion first degree murder. For example, Vox reports that Texan Republican state legislator Tony Tinderholt has introduced a Bill there that would introduce the death penalty for women having abortions. Vox reports he, ” says it would make people “consider the repercussions” of having sex.
2. The Effect on Women’s Health Service Providers e.g. Planned Parenthood
Secondly, the Hyde Amendment makes providers of women’s health services, like Planned Parenthood, vulnerable to attacks from anti-choice activists.
Planned Parenthood receives half a billion dollars a year from the federal government to help fund the multiple health services they provide, mostly to women. However, anti-choice activists represent them as doing nothing but abortions and are constantly calling for their funding to be taken away. They’ve even had success in some red states in relation to that.
The reality is that only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortion. Further, the money they get from the federal government, while significant, only accounts for around 40% of their funding. All anti-choice activists do when they deny Planned Parenthood funding is ensure women, especially those who are poor or otherwise vulnerable, have less or no access to healthcare.

Anti-choice activists know this, of course, but they don’t appear to care. Some even freely admit that they’ll do whatever it takes to get a win for their cause. Anti-choice activists call themselves pro-life (and I’ll get to why that’s a myth later), but some won’t even condemn the extremists within their movement who go so far as the murder of abortion providers. In fact, a small number not only endorse violence and murder, they raise money to support those who carry out such acts. Their opinion is they’re committing justifiable homicide. In the US at least, they’re almost exclusively conservative Christians, whose interpretation of the Bible is that God opposes abortion.
The USA Wants Roe v. Wade to Remain the Law
In the past, the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) has been a reflection of US society. When the issue of same-sex marriage came before them, for example, they were in large part reflecting the changing views of US society in making it legal.
Therefore, if any cases relating to abortion make it to the Supreme Court, abortion should remain legal too. According to Pew (their emphasis):
About six-in-ten U.S. adults (58%) said in a 2018 survey that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with 37% who said it should be illegal all or most of the time. Public opinion on this question has been relatively stable over more than two decades of Pew Research Center polling, and there is little difference between the views of men and women.
Further:
When it comes to the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 ruling, about seven-in-ten Americans (69%) said Roe v. Wade should not be completely overturned, according to a survey conducted in late 2016.
Into the Weeds
There are demographic differences, all of which readers can probably predict:
1. Democrats are more likely to think abortion should be legal than Republicans.
2. The more educated you are, the more likely you are to think Roe v. Wade should not be overturned.
62% of those with a high school diploma or less; 70% of those with some college education; 74% of those with a college degree; 88% of those with a post-graduate qualification.
think Roe v. Wade should not be overturned,
3. The only area of the country where a majority think abortion should be illegal is the Bible Belt.
Abortion and the Republican Party (GOP)
The US Republican Party (GOP) has always been anti-abortion. Its official platform on abortion doesn’t even make exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.
In the past, their attempts to completely take away a woman’s right to choose have been unsuccessful. There has been a lot of success in states that Republicans control though, making it more difficult for women to exercise that legal right. However, the election in 2016 of a misogynist who cares more about the anti-abortion Evangelical Christians that cheer him on than the wishes of the majority of his citizens is a worry for all of us who care about women’s rights.
Donald Trump and Abortion
Before he was a Republican politician, most of Trump’s views were more progressive. There was a time when he was pro-choice. But now that he needs to appeal to far-right Christian conservatives, that’s what he’s doing. During the 2016 election campaign, he was even heard to call for the punishment of women who have an abortion, just like the Christian abortion extremists he’s trying to appeal to.
Those in the Republican party who are anti-choice are taking advantage of having a sympathetic ear in the White House. As a result, they’re having some success in their moves towards making abortion illegal again.
A safe, legal abortion is a choice that should be available to all woman when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, or one that she doesn’t want to go ahead with because of the risk to her’s or the future child’s health or life. But, following the election of Donald Trump, that choice is increasingly at risk.
Why is Trump Supporting a Position a Majority Don’t?
President Donald Trump is a populist, and normally he attempts to appeal to the majority. However, abortion is different, for reasons I will get to.
Trump’s approval rating hasn’t made it to 50% the entire time he’s been in office. It’s never even been above his disapproval rating. He personally feeds off rallies where as many as tens of thousands act as if he’s a rock star, but those crowds are not a true reflection of the US population.
Trump Job Approval (Source: Gallup. Click graphic to go to source.)
Trump knows deep down that his win wasn’t down just to those Evangelical Christians, or even to a majority of USians. Help from the Russians in three key states was what got him into the White House. (The Weekly Standard article: ‘The Election Came Down to 77,744 Votes in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan’ lays the details out clearly.) Within the White House, staff know not to mention things like Russian interference in the 2016 election in front of Trump. He appears to view mere mention of the topic the height of disloyalty. Staff even warn others not to bring the subject up in front of him.
Therefore the few policy positions Trump and his enablers stick to fall into two areas. They’re either favourable towards Russia (e.g. GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell has gone so far as to block bipartisan legislation to stop Russian interference in the 2020 elections), or are those Evangelical Christians support. Opposition to abortion, of course, falls into the second of those two categories.
  State’s Rights
Living in a country that doesn’t have separate states, I’ve always had difficulty understanding the issue of state’s rights. I’ve never seen the point of it. In the past I’ve thought of that as simply a lack of cultural understanding on my part. More and more though, I’m starting to see it as a dangerous way to run a country. (It’s not only the US where I see problems. Catalan independence in Spain, and the use of Sharia in Aceh province in Indonesia, are two other examples.)
(Source: Wikipedia. Click graphic to go to source.)
There are several areas where I see having separate states with separate laws causing problems in the US. This is not the place to go down that rabbit hole, but for me one of them is the effect on women’s rights. It is already appalling that women have less rights than men in what is supposedly the world’s leading democracy. What’s even worse is that women in some states have even less rights than their compatriots in other states.
I believe that attempts to deny women the right to control over their own bodies is as much about controlling women as it is about a belief they’re saving lives for many anti-choice activists. There are many reasons I have for that opinion, but one relates to the issue of state’s rights.
On the whole, the states that are trying to make abortion illegal again are the same ones that didn’t endorse the Equal Rights amendment to the US Constitution.  Take note on the graphic on the right of which states don’t think women should have equal rights to men, and you will see they largely correspond with those that are doing the most to try and prevent women from having control over their own bodies.
The Affect of States’ Rights on Abortion Rights
There are now six states that have only one clinic remaining that provides abortions thanks to anti-choice activism. They are: Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia. The last clinic left in Missouri may soon have to close. The only thing currently keeping it open is a court order against the latest state law putting impossible conditions on abortion providers.
These states (and others) make laws with unreasonable conditions that are so difficult to comply with, the clinics have no other choice but to shut down. In that way the states aren’t actually breaking the law that gives women the right to an abortion, it just means there’s nowhere for them to go to get one that’s safe and legal.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, there were 452 clinics in the US that included abortions as part of their services to women in 1996. By 2005 that was 381, and by 2014 it was 272. (There are no data available post-2014.)
  Abortion in Republican-Controlled States
Red states have brought in literally hundreds of laws since 1973 making it more difficult for the women living in them to obtain a safe, legal abortion. Many other laws that sought to do the same have been overturned by the courts due to the advocacy of groups on behalf of women. However, the fact remains that women living in red states have less rights than those living in blue states (i..e. states where the government is in Democratic Party control).
Once again, this is obviously an appalling situation, and one that should not be acceptable to anyone. What should be happening is that women have the same rights across the country. Medical science, social science, and economics all tell us the best thing is for women to have the right to choose whether or not to continue with a pregnancy.
It’s also the best thing if you really want to reduce the number of abortions. There will be those reading this who object to the way I’ve been framing opponents to abortion as anti-choice. They will say this is about saving the lives of unborn babies. However, that is simply not true. All the evidence, from both the US and the rest of the world, shows that making abortion illegal actually increases the number of abortions. If you really want to reduce the number of abortions, the best way to do that is by making it legal. The leaders of the anti-choice movement know this. This is why they focus on the number of abortions taking place, rather than any other data. (More on this below)
Basically, where the Republican Party is in control of government, women are losing the right to control of their own bodies. Donald Trump, a man who changes his position on issues more often than he washes his hands (and he’s a germophobe), has actually kept one of his election promises, and is on track to keeping another. Unfortunately, both relate to making abortion illegal again in the US.
Trump’s First Promise in Relation to Abortion
Trump made a promise that he would only appoint justices to the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS), as well as judges to other courts, that come with the recommendation of both the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation. That means (among other things) justices who oppose abortion.
Unfortunately, Trump has had the privilege of appointing two justices to the Supreme Court.
The first, Neil Gorsuch, was a replacement for justice Antonin Scalia who died during the presidency of Barack Obama. However, Republican senate leader Mitch McConnell’s (a Trump enabler) absolute refusal to allow a vote on Obama’s choice (Merrick Garland) to replace him meant it was Trump’s pick that took the vacancy.
The second, Brett Kavanaugh was, if possible, even more controversial. It was clear he had a history of, at the very least, not treating women as equals. However, all Republicans, and even one (male) Democrat, still voted for him.
As a result, a majority Supreme Court justices are all personally anti-choice. This has led to a hive of activity amongst anti-choice activists in red states. Each wants to be the first to get a Bill from their own state attracting enough opposition from those who are pro-choice that it makes it through the courts to the Supreme Court level. At that point, they hope the Court will take the opportunity to make abortion illegal again.
This, they think will make them heroes in the anti-choice movement, which it probably will. Perhaps more importantly to many, they will feel they have done God’s will. That’s because for most of them, it’s their faith that informs them when it comes to this issue, not the facts.
Abortion, God, and the Election of  Donald Trump
Abortion is one of the main reasons more than 80% of Evangelicals, and a sizable chunk of other conservative Christians, gave Trump their vote in 2016. A majority of Evangelicals even go so far as to believe it was God who made Trump president, and stopping abortion was the reason He did it.
To believe that God made Donald Trump President of the USA sounds, well, unbelievable. However, you only have to do a Google search on the topic to find multiple links to articles and videos of people who believe this. And don’t be tempted to dismiss the belief as a coming from a small fringe element either.
Sarah Sanders
Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in an interview in January with the Christian Broadcasting Network:
I think God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times, and I think that He wanted Donald Trump to become president, and that’s why he’s there, and I think he has done a tremendous job in supporting a lot of the things people of faith really care about.
That interview continued with an exchange attacking Democrats for anti-Semitism.
(Here, I must compliment all those Trump-supporting a$$ho£€$ marching and chanting, “Jews will not replace us,” and “Blood and soil,” in Charlottesville in 2017 for how well they hid their affiliation to the Democratic party. /sarcasm)
Next the interview turned to the issues on the southern border. That led to mention of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) calling the wall “immoral”. This somehow enabled Sanders to segue to abortion:
I mean honestly, it’s very hard at this point to even take a lecture from Democrats on what is moral and what isn’t. People who are willing to allow legislation to pass supporting late-term abortion, the idea that they would take out, “so help me God in the platform,” the House Democrats have raised this week …
Sarah Sanders views on abortion an God when she was in the White House were by no means unique.
  The Future of Sarah Sanders
The evidence is that Sarah Sanders is returning to her Bible Belt state of Arkansas in order to start campaigning to become its governor. Her father is former Arkansas governor and twice candidate to be Republican presidential nominee, Mike Huckabee. So her chances aren’t as remote as you might imagine. However, whether or not she gets the job, her particular set of principles are ones that are typical of a Bible Belt politician.
Governor Huckabee has clearly been a big influence in his daughter’s life. It’s obviously a good thing for a father and daughter to have a good relationship. However, when that father does things like blame the Sandy Hook massacre on the Bible no longer being in schools, you have to wonder whether some kind of intervention was in order.
He’s also always made his own opposition to abortion clear. This graphic is from one of his successful gubernatorial races.
And this is an example of a Huckabee tweet (iirc, I made the screen capture of this tweet in 2015):
To me, these views seem extreme, but they’re typical of the majority in the Bible Belt of the USA. I originally made a copy of the tweet above, and some others by the governor, because I felt an enormous amount of hate emanating from them. I thought about Christians, including the governor, telling people that Christianity is all about love, but I think they express a quite different mindset.
What Does the Bible Say About Abortion?
As with so many things, it’s pretty hard to get a clear direction from the Bible on abortion. Besides that, Christians are pretty good at only following which parts of it suit them at the best of times. Eating pork, getting tattoos, and even decorating a tree to celebrate Christmas are all things that are forbidden in the Bible. However, you will also have no trouble finding web pages that provide arguments why it’s okay to do those things, no matter how literal your reading of the Bible.
If they want to do something forbidden in the Bible, they will find a way to make it okay. If they want to make a group of people the subject of their derision of hatred, they will.
The Bible does appear to consider abortion wrong. However, unlike many anti-choice activists, it does not appear to consider it murder. The punishment in the Bible for murder is death. “A life for a life.” Women who abort a child do not face this punishment in the Bible. Therefore, I think it’s safe to assume that abortion is not considered murder.
That’s not the interpretation of many conservative Christians though. The conservative Catholic website, Crisis Magazine has a ‘Reproductive Rights Glossary for the UnWoke‘. I didn’t know whether to laugh or be angry when I first read it. However, every article I’ve read in the magazine in the past has made me angry, so that is probably what they’re going for in people like me. (I’m the liberal, pro-choice, pro-marriage equality, atheist, outspoken feminist you were warned about.) The magazine’s combination of ignorance, intelligence, and influence over a large number of people worries me greatly.
When it comes to information about abortion, Crisis Magazine‘s readers would be far better off reading Valerie Tarico’s ‘Right-Wing Christians’ Hostility to Science Destroys Lives‘. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever read on the subject, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
The Attempts of Republican States to Ban Abortion Nationwide
There are now eight states in the US competing for the title of “Most Draconian Abortion Laws”. They are: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Utah. By no coincidence, those states have several other things in common. They’re all not only reliably Republican, they are all strong supporters of President Trump. All also have a larger than average conservative Christian population. (Alabama is the most religious state; Mississippi is third; Arkansas is fifth; Georgia is sixth.) Most are also among the most poorly educated states.
It’s not good for a state’s economy either. Most of these states are also very poor financially, and their stance doesn’t help that. Companies these days are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to doing the right thing. Several states saw what happened when they tried to enact anti-transgender legislation. The same is now happening with anti-choice legislation. For example, AMC’s flagship TV show, The Walking Dead, is considering leaving Georgia after nine seasons. The reason? Georgia’s foetal heartbeat bill.
Republicans, Abortion, and Morality
Most countries believe the fallacy that being religious equals being moral. In most Western democracies a majority hold the belief that Christianity equals morality, though this belief is steadily declining.  The belief is stronger in the US than most, and conservative Christians in particular believe they have cornered the market when it comes to morality. Since Ronald Reagan’s call to the Moral Majority, Republicans have embraced their role as their country’s moral police. (This wasn’t a new role for them, but it became a greater part of their core identity with Reagan.)
Of course, the reality is that on most measures that society considers represent morality, it’s atheists that are, on average, the most moral US citizens, and a majority of them vote or lean Democrat. (I wrote about this, with the evidence, almost five years ago.)  We’re also constantly getting evidence that the so-called Moral Majority are, in reality, a bunch of hypocrites. It seems hardly a week goes by without another breaking story that exposes a leader of the Moral Majority. A recent one was Jerry Falwell Jr., president of the evangelical Liberty University. (You can see Rachel Maddow’s (MSNBC) excellent take on the events here.)
  The Anti-Choice or Forced-Birth Movement
Those who are anti-abortion call themselves “pro-life”. This moniker could not be further from the truth. As mentioned above, making abortion illegal actually increases the number of abortions.
I am not refusing to refer to them as “pro-life” to get at them in any way, but because the term is simply not accurate. The terms “anti-choice” and “forced birth” are both more accurate, and that’s why I use them.
I also find it really, really annoying that many in the anti-choice movement represent women who have abortions as simply using abortion as a form of contraception.
Another person, whatever their gender, cannot imagine what any individual goes through when they discover they have an unplanned pregnancy. Some forced-birth activists present abortion as if women use it as a form of contraception. They produce anecdotes of women casually having multiple abortions as if this is common.
The truth is very different. The fact that a woman has chosen to terminate the pregnancy does not mean the choice was easy. For most it’s one of the most difficult decisions she will ever make. On top of that, one of the things that makes it far more difficult is the stigma around that choice. And, it is anti-choice activists who create that stigma. They make what is already a difficult choice far harder. They speak of the emotional harm a women suffers for the rest of her life, but most or all of that harm is because of the rhetoric of anti-choice activists.
The Lack of Compassion of Anti-Choice Activists
What especially concerns me about many of those in the US who are part of the forced-birth movement is that their care for the foetus that can’t, in their words, “speak for itself”, does not extend to:
1. The cost of any care of the foetus’ (e.g. healthcare) before it’s born.
2. The cost of any care of the baby/child after it’s born (e.g. healthcare, education, housing, food). This is especially the case if the child they are forcing to be born has some form of special/high needs.
3. The cost of any of the needs of the mother either before or after the birth (e.g. healthcare, child care, interruption in education/career, mental health care).
4. The cost of the needs of the future child’s siblings. The parent/s may no longer be able to afford to help with the cost of tertiary education, for example.
5. The cost of any of the needs of the father (e.g. mental health due to the expectations around caring for a child or a larger family). The Guttmacher report notes that a large proportion of abortions are for women who already have several children. The abortion is because they feel they simply cannot afford another child mentally, physically, emotionally, or financially.
  The Myth of “Pro-Life”
Those who oppose abortion say they are doing so to save the lives of all the babies who would have been born if there was no abortion. This is absolute codswallop. The stupidity of it perhaps makes me even angrier than the attack on women’s rights because of what the truth really is.
Making abortion illegal does NOT mean no more abortions. What it means is:
1.Women being forced by desperation into breaking the law.
2. Women DYING from what is a simple medical procedure when carried out by a properly trained medical professional.
3. More women, especially poor women, suffering long-term medical complications.
4. More women being trapped in poverty.
5. More children suffering because their parent/parents have more children than they can look after financially, physically, emotionally, or mentally.
6. People, especially women, being trapped in unfulfilling (or even abusive) relationships because couples stay together, “for the sake of the child/ren.”
7. Places like Planned Parenthood forced to close. That means a lack of information about, and access to, contraception as well as other healthcare needs. It also means women who don’t have an abortion, which is most of their clients, lose access to healthcare.
Making Abortion Illegal Increases the Number of Abortions
But most of all, the evidence is that making abortion illegal does NOT reduce the number of abortions. The US’s Guttmacher Institute produced a comprehensive study: Abortion Worldwide 2017 (pdf here). It states:
Abortions occur as frequently in the two most-restrictive categories of countries (banned outright or allowed only to save the woman’s life) as in the least-restrictive category (allowed without restriction as to reason)—37 and 34 per 1,000 women, respectively.
Yes, you read that correctly. There are more abortions where it is illegal or heavily restricted than where it’s freely available.
More Sex Education and More Contraception are the Best Ways to Stop Abortion
It bears repeating. Note those figures in the quote above from the Guttmacher Institute report. There are actually, on average, more abortions in countries where it’s illegal or heavily restricted. The report concludes that’s because legal abortion usually goes hand-in-hand with better access to, and knowledge of, contraception.
What makes that second sentence important is that Christians from the far right usually not only oppose abortion, they oppose contraception too. Most especially, they oppose education about sex and contraception for teenagers. Their advice is to stay a virgin until you marry and spend your fertile years either pregnant, or trying to get that way.
A Lesson from Colorado
Valerie Tarico’s article (same one referred to above) was written in response to an initiative in Colorado in 2015. It begins:
When a pilot program in Colorado offered teens state-of-the-art long acting contraceptives—IUD’s and implants—teen births plummeted by 40% [3], along with a drop in abortions [4]. The program saved the state 42.5 million dollars [5] in a single year, over five times what it cost. But rather than extending or expanding the program, some Colorado Republicans are trying to kill it—even if this stacks the odds against Colorado families. Why? Because they insist, wrongly, that IUD’s work by killing embryos, which they believe are sacred. This claim, which is based in bad faith and scientific ignorance, undermines fiscal prudence and flourishing families.
Gloria Steinman was on CNN’s Amanpour recently. They spoke about Alabama’s new abortion law. She pointed out that before Roe v Wade, one in three women in the US had an abortion. Following it, that dropped to one in four. The US followed the same world trend: the more freely available abortion is, the less it occurs. Therefore, it’s likely that if the anti-choice activists succeed in making abortion illegal again, this will actually increase the number of abortions.
  The Example of Nazi Germany
Like me, Steinman sees the current attacks on women’s independence as part of the international increase in white nationalism and authoritarianism. She noted that the first impulse of every authoritarian government she has ever studied is to control reproduction because it’s the single thing they can’t imitate.
Steinman further pointed out one of the very first acts of that most famous of authoritarians and white nationalists – Adolf Hitler.  When he first took control his bully boys were immediately physically padlocking all the Family Planning clinics. At the same time,  he made abortion an act against the state. Abortion doctors were given death sentences, and women wanting abortions were put in prison in order to force them to give birth. Those women he didn’t want giving birth (and the men he didn’t want fathering children) were either sterilized or murdered.
I’m not, of course, suggesting that’s this a path that Trump and the Republicans are going to go down. However, Trump makes no secret of the fact he believes he’s in possession of superior genes. And, the white nationalist movement thinks we’re already in a race war and embrace the theories of eugenicists.
  Alabama’s New Abortion Law
When I see the photo (below) of Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey, proudly signing her state’s Bill making abortion illegal, wearing her Republican-red suit, I see the colour of blood. The blood of all the women who will die because of that Bill is on her hands. It’s also on the hands of the men in the Alabama senate who voted for the Bill. And I say, “men” for a reason; not a single woman in that senate gave it her support.
Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act. To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God. https://t.co/DwKJyAjSs8 pic.twitter.com/PIUQip6nmw
— Governor Kay Ivey (@GovernorKayIvey) May 15, 2019
Governor Ivey notes in the tweet above that her faith is the reason for her opposition to abortion. As with most anti-abortion rhetoric, that’s misguided. Due to a life of being told that by her church, she probably believes that God opposes abortion. But, as so often with the deeply religious, there’s a failure of independent thought. Like so many of the deeply religious, it’s unlikely she’s read the Bible from cover to cover. She probably relies on religious leaders for her view on the subject. That’s understandable, but a bad example in a leader.
This Act also exemplifies why I think such legislation is more about controlling women. While it prevents women from having abortions, it does not apply to frozen embryos.
Exceptions for Rape, Incest, and the Life of the Mother
Most abortion bills have exceptions if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or if it would endanger the life of the mother. Notably, at least two of these latest bills, Alabama and Missouri, do not have rape and incest exceptions. This is apparently deliberate as the writers of the bills believe this is more likely to get them to the Supreme Court.
However, even most of those who are anti-choice and want to force women to give birth, also want to see an exception for rape and incest. They acknowledge that in these cases a woman should have a choice whether she carries the foetus to term. They can see that the choice of the woman, who is already a person, should take precedence over something that only has the potential to be a person. In such cases, they are able to empathize with the woman.
So, why do they feel differently when a woman becomes pregnant against her will but whose sexual activity was willing? This is often where conservative religion takes control of their thought processes. Sex was a choice, so suffer the consequences. The high failure rate of many contraceptives doesn’t move them. If they’re not married, they shouldn’t be having sex anyway.
The Role of Right-Wing Media
Further, thanks to right-wing media like Fox News, many who are anti-choice make the assumption that all women wanting an abortion are single. They think women are using abortion as a form of contraception and it’s something they do easily and casually.
This all gives them a picture of women who have abortions as young, sexually promiscuous, irresponsible, and, most importantly, not behaving in a manner that meets with God’s approval. In their eyes, such women should suffer in some way. An unwanted pregnancy meets that criteria; everyone will know they’ve been sinning.
(Here, we also see the danger of the Christian belief in free will. I won’t discuss determinism in this post, but in the unlikely event you don’t know what it is, look it up. Neither the women or the men, of course, had no choice whether they had sex.)
The interesting thing is, the abortion rate in many religiously conservative states are among the highest in the country. Women from religiously conservative families are able to justify their own abortions while still condemning all other women.
Abortion Rate per 1000 women aged 15-44 (Click graphic to go to source.)
Why Are Women Wanting An Abortion Different?
Republicans think government should stay out of their lives and there should be as few laws as possible. This rule of no rules, however, doesn’t seem to apply when it comes to women. They, it seems, should have to put up with anything, especially if they’re pregnant. The Federalist Society doesn’t believe women should have the freedom to choose what to do with their own bodies. If a woman is pregnant, she should, in their opinion, have to continue with the pregnancy no matter what the circumstances.
While the Republican party says it’s all about removing government from people’s lives, again, that doesn’t seem to apply to women. They insist they support equality for women, but the evidence does not support that.
Over and over again, when there is legislation in relation to women’s rights and equality for women, the Republican Party fails to support it.
The GOP is constantly making itself harder to vote for. It has become the party of Trump, and his antics are chasing voter away. Women and people of colour in particular no longer feel they have a place in the party.
However, many voters say they don’t care about the things he says as long as the things he changes are ones they like. Conservative and Evangelical Christians are over the moon about a conservative Supreme Court for decades to come. Further, if they vote for him in 2020, there’s a good chance he’ll be able to make another appointment given the state of Ruth Bader-Ginsburg’s health. There is plenty of evidence of religious hypocrisy in the world for any of us to think Trump’s disgusting racism, misogyny, ignorance, narcissism, and all the rest, will stop them voting for him again.
The Democratic Party has to give voters something to vote for. Voting against Trump won’t cut it. Only with a Democratic administration can a woman’s right to choose start to become safe again.

New driver trying to get insurance... Quote for 1750 in November... Why has it gone up to 4400 now?
Hello all, I'm 17 years old (male) and passed my test earlier this month. In November I just thought I'd get a rough figure for insuring a 1.2L Corsa (2001)... I got a quote from Quinn Direct for 1750 (I put in the details as if I had already passed etc). So yes, more than the car is worth, but my parents and grandparents were willing to help me out with it, and I was pleased. So, Christmas has been and I thought I'd get looking... I went back on to Quinn Direct and now for a 1L Corsa (2001)... The quote is 4450!! That is ridiculous! It's true, I'm a 17 year old male... Bla bla... But 4450 for a 1 Litre car? All my friends are with Quinn Direct, and their 1.3L Fiesta's etc are only 1900 to insure! Gocompare and all those don't give me much better quotes either. I've also done the Pass Plus. Can anyone shed some light on this please? Thanks!""

How much do you think it would cost for a 20yr old to insure a toyota yaris?
Ok so I have my heart set on owning a Toyota yaris. I want a new ish car, I'm thinking of a 59 plate which would probably cost me around 6700, which I'm willing to spend. However I'm really confused by the insurance. In my head I anticipate that the insurance would cost me anywhere upto 2000 with me only being 20. But I went on a price comparison website and entered my details as accurately as possibly and it quoted me the lowest comprehensive cover price of about 500. I only want a 1.0 litre engine Toyota and I know that its in insurance group 2 or 3, but surely the insurance would be far more than that?! How much do you think it would cost to insure. I passed my test 3years ago and have been on my parents insurance since!""

Total loss and State farm auto insurance?
I had a collision a few weeks before and it is classified as collision damage. Now, things have changed in the middle and the body shop manager tells me a new stories of additional things that went wrong due to collision (all of a sudden) and that the insurance agent after inspection wants to call it a total loss based on this new estimate. My insurance company- State farm wants it to call a total loss which I doubt given the extent of repair it might take for the minor damage in the front fender alone. Now, here are my questions. I now have suspicion on the integrity of the body shop as well the trick palyed in declaring total loss. 1. Can I have a second opinion at a different body shop? Does State farm allow that? 2. If the repair cost is more than the ACV, and if I still wish to keep the car, can I negotiate for the max amount less deductible that State farm is willing to pay the body shop (xx% of the max amount that state farm is willing to pay before declaring total loss) and I take care of the remaining cost? Why does my car insurance quotes do this.....?
when I first passed my test 3 years ago at age 17 my insurance was almost 6000 for third party only on a ford fiesta. this was the rough price for this make/model on all insurance companies i got a quote from. Two weeks ago i did a quote for a fiesta hoping its reduced in price (three years later, havent drove since i passed my test ) and third party only was roughly 2000 with all companies i tried and FULLY COMP has been roughly 900-1000 with all companies i have recently tried. so why is fully comp alot more cheaper than third party only? I Have tried quotes with lots of different companies and gocompare and they all came up really cheap. However, today I done another quote on a fiesta I was hoping to buy today, and the quotes have come up at between 1800 and 3000. In the take hold Back Rooms, by Ellen Messer, a woman named Liz, explains her reasons for having an abortion. People beat said to me, How can you be in favor of abortion? If youd had one, you wouldnt befool these beautiful children. But I would abide had them. It just would beat been later on when I was better prompt to boot for them. And maybe they would have a nicer man for their father. I would have been more prep bed and all our lives would have been so much easier. It is commonly thought that every strip is just temporary, that in that location is a family out there postponement for the child with subject arms. The truth of the matter is that many families do not want children unless they be white, sound and pretty. most of the others atomic number 18 either dragged through and through the arrangement until they are 18 or sent to live with foster families who are sometimes isolated or even abusive (187). only women are informed of these realities, and many, refused to bring a child into the world and have it live such a way of life, which makes abortion t heir only way out. \n\n Also there is the concomitant that many women want to enshroud their present nation from families or employers. They neck that they could be disowned or fired for their calamitous state. They are desperate to trammel their secrets, so desperate in position that they are involuntary to risk their lives. This is a risk a woman shouldnt have to take. In the book Abortion: A verificatory Decision, Mrs. Lunneborg states that The desire not to have a child is by far the better(p) reason for an abortion. There are enough unwanted children in the world already.(18) And so these women risked, and often lost, their lives in these illegal abortions. If they were caught afterwards, they were charged with murder. But is abortion murder? \n\n Abortion is defined as The attaind close of pregnancy beforehand it is capable of pick as an psyche (Frohock 186). Considering this rendering, at the time of most abortions, the fetus is not an individual. The definition is far too unsophisticated. One postulate to take into setting the increaseal stages of the foetal life span. \n\n Most abortions occur briefly after the deterrent of pregnancy, which is unremarkably forward to the 12th week. The beginning 12 weeks are known as the starting signal trimester or the embryonic phase. At this time the fetus is rough 3-3.5 inches long and has a exercising weight of 15-20 grams. The neurologic schema is primitive at outflank, demonstrating only obtuse swimming motions (Rosenblatt 37). The fleck trimester heralds a time of rapid growth. At about quaternary months the return usually first perceives foetal movement. At 24 weeks the brain resembles that of a mature person. The fetal weight is about 650 grams. (39) The third trimester is from 24 weeks to birth (approximately 40 weeks.). At 26 weeks the nervous system begins to regulate some body processes. (40) When make the conscious finale to eject the life of the fetus one must take into account the development of the fetus. One of the approaches might be assessing the neuro formal development. It is only logical that the more conglomerate the neurological system is the more believably you are to induce pain or end a sense of self if in fact that sense exists previous to birth (Frohock 28). In many ways it is similar to the decision to pull the trollop on a person pose in coma. Here, one must check whether or not to withdraw that which the person needs to survive. soon enough the decision to terminate the life is not considered murder but an act of the deepest humanity, an opinion that contrasts greatly to the shame and offense faced by an aborted mother during the time of the vision anti-abortion attitude. How long would women suffer this mental straining? (Haddok 132) \n\n Based on the information, presented in the roe vs. Wade case, the despotic Court rule that a woman was allowed by the Constitutions fourteenth amendment to rec eive an abortion before the first trimester. It now appears that the pro-choice advocates had won the governmental tug-o-war at last. However, violence continues between the two groups as the animosity and resentment has grownup to new heights. Now, more than ever, research articles are coming out about a womans right to silence vs. a fetuss right to life. The law may have been passed, but the war goes on. \n\n In conclusion no matter what a persons opinion on abortion is, women have always had abortions, they have them now and most probably will always have them. It shouldnt be for anyone but the heavy(predicate) woman having the certain abortion to get back on whether or not it is the best thing for her.
