Rock and Roll Storytime #8: The Rolling Stones at Altamont (AKA One of the Worst Concert Disasters of All Time)
Tumblr media
The year 1969 had been a hectic one, both for the world in general (with the continuing Vietnam War, the Chappaquiddick incident, and the moon landings) and especially for rock and roll (with the death of Brian Jones, Woodstock, and the Beatles starting to head full-steam down the road that led them to their break-up in April 1970). Capping off this year full of highs and lows, there was Altamont, which has been labelled by many as the death of the 60′s. At the very least, it certainly brought a premature end to the idealism that the youths of that generation held dear.
Lord knows, I will always say that Brian Jones should have had a chance to get back on his feet and I’m super salty that he’s dead, but honestly, I’m glad he missed out on this one.
Before I tell the story of Altamont though, I must ask… Whose bright idea was it to hire the Hell’s Angels as security for a Rolling Stones concert and pay them with $500 of beer?
Well, to answer that question, I’m going to have to begin this story with the ending of another. Truly, the roots of this ill-thought-out decision lies within events that had happened that summer.
Tumblr media
I’ve mentioned Brian Jones already, but to give those of you who are new to this the rundown, Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones was the Stones’ first guitarist, and at the start, he was the brains of the band. Seven years, a bunch of internal conflict with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Andrew Loog Oldham, a messy relationship with Anita Pallenberg, drug abuse and alcoholism, two drug trials, and a fuck-ton of stress later, Brian was in a state we’d call “mental exhaustion” (didn’t help that his physical health was shit too). Where in 1966 he was contributing some of the best parts of the Stones’ early music, such as the sitar on “Paint It Black”, in 1969, he’d rarely show up to the studio, and if he did, he would usually be too intoxicated to properly contribute. In fact, on Let It Bleed, he only contributed to two songs: “Midnight Rambler” (congas) and “You’ve Got the Silver” (autoharp).
In June 1969, the Stones decided they wanted to go on tour again, but then, they found out that due to the fact that Brian had twice been convicted of drug possession, it’d be unlikely that he could receive a visa to perform in the U.S.A., if at all. Ultimately, Mick and Keith decided that their best option would be to fire Brian, and so, on June 8, 1969, they went down to Brian’s home, Cotchford Farm, to tell him that he would no longer be with the group. According to those present, Brian had been expecting this, and in the various press releases, it was made to appear as if Brian had left the band on his own terms. His statement read, in part, “I no longer see eye to eye with the others over the discs we are cutting. We no longer communicate musically. The Stones’ music is not to my taste any more. The work of Mick and Keith has progressed at a tangent, at least to my way of thinking. I have a desire to play my own brand of music rather than that of others, no matter how much I appreciate their musical concepts.”
At this point in time, whether Brian was accepting of this turn of events or not is up to conjecture.
In either case, the Stones brought in 20-year-old Mick Taylor (previously of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers) to replace Brian, and at a press conference on June 13, the Stones announced that they would be holding a free concert on July 5 in order to properly introduce their new guitarist.
And then, just three days before the concert was set to take place, Brian drowned in his backyard swimming pool, being just twenty-seven years old. Although the coroner ruled it death by misadventure (which personal research seems to support), theories have long persisted that Brian was, in fact, murdered, but that is, of course, a story for another day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Stones in the Park concert quickly became a tribute to Brian Jones, and at the start, Mick read two verses of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Adonais, and as the band launched into “I’m Yours and I’m Hers” by Johnny Winters (one of Brian’s favourite songs), thousands of butterflies were released, though this was against park stipulation, as they were voracious Cabbage White butterflies, and many had died due to the boxes not being properly ventilated.
Tumblr media
What’s important to this story about the concert at Hyde Park is that the London chapter of the Hell’s Angels was there providing security that day. It is also important to note that the Grateful Dead (who, incidentally, also had a member of the 27 Club in their line-up) had also hired the Hell’s Angels as security numerous times.
Tumblr media
Several months later, the Stones had been having a pretty good run with their American tour, which was able to slightly mitigate some of the shady business practices Allen Klein had subjected them to, but throughout, fans and journalists kept complaining about high ticket prices. If you ask me though, those bitches were lucky. I’d rather be paying three to eight dollars (equivalent to $21.21 to $56.57 in 2019) as opposed to a minimum of $159 that tickets to a Rolling Stones concert now sell for. Not to mention, Woodstock had happened in August that year, and that was a big success, so in Mick Jagger’s 26-year-old, immature, unwise brain, that obviously meant that they should have another free concert like the one at Hyde Park. Really, in his mind, the peace and love movement was only just beginning, so what could go wrong?
As Murphy’s Law will tell you, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”
Oh, and go wrong it did.
The first major problem was that they couldn’t get a venue.
The concert was set for December 6, and their tour manager, Sam Cutler, struggled to get them a venue. He tried San Jose’s State University, but there had been a three-day festival recently, and the city wasn’t exactly in the mood for another batch of hippies storming the city so soon afterward, so that was out of bounds. He then tried gunning for San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, but there was a football game between the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49-ers taking place in the same general location, which made use of the venue impractical. He then tried getting Sears Point Raceway on board, but disputes quickly arose over filming distribution rights and an up-front fee of $300,000.
Tumblr media
Finally, just two days before the concert was set to take place, the Stones’ management managed to get a hold of Altamont Speedway (it helped that the owner, Dick Carter, apparently offered the venue for free).
As you can imagine, there was a whole shit-ton of problems that arose from that, and Rolling Stone magazine, in its piece on the tragedy, listed the following logistical problems:
“1) Promise a free concert by a popular rock group which rarely appears in this country. Announce the site only four days in advance.
2) Change the location 20 hours before the concert.
3) The new concert site should be as close as possible to a giant freeway.
4) Make sure the grounds are barren, treeless, desolate.
5) Don’t warn neighboring landowners that hundreds of thousands of people are expected. Be unaware of their out-front hostility toward long hair and rock music.
6) Provide one-sixtieth the required toilet facilities to insure that people will use nearby fields, the sides of cars, etc.
7) The stage should be located in an area likely to be completely surrounded by people and their vehicles.
8) Build the stage low enough to be easily hurdled. Don’t secure a clear area between stage and audience.
9) Provide an unreliable barely audible low fidelity sound system.
10) Ask the Hell’s Angels to act as ‘security’ guards.”
Most sane people would have quit while they were ahead, but this is the Rolling Stones we’re talking about. Between Brian Jones having five kids by the age of twenty-three, Mick Jagger allegedly sleeping with over 4,000 women (and don’t get me started on him and David Bowie), Keith Richards’ drug habits and his snorting his dad’s ashes, Bill Wyman dating a teenager while he was in his forties, and Charlie Watts punching Mick Jagger in the face, we are absolutely not dealing with the most sane bunch of individuals on the planet.
And let’s not forget that some idiot decided it’d be a great idea to pay the Hell’s Angels in $500 of beer (the equivalent of $3,535.43 in 2019).
Yeah, if you listened closely to the sounds of the earth in 1969, I can guarantee you, you probably would have heard a barely-cold-in-the-ground Brian Jones spinning in his grave over this stupidity (because he was acting as the band’s manager for a time in their early days before Andrew Oldham came on board).
Let’s also not forget that they hired a particularly notorious batch of Hell’s Angels from Oakland, California, whereas the Grateful Dead found their “security bikers” in Sacramento. Apparently, Grateful Dead manager Rock Scully even tried to warn the Stones about the “real” Hell’s Angels after seeing the footage from Hyde Park, but obviously, they didn’t take whatever warning he tried to give them to heart. The hippies in general had a romanticized image of the Hell’s Angels in their heads, seeing them as “outlaw brothers of the counterculture.”
No points for guessing how that worked out, but let’s continue regardless.
Set to perform that night were Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, the Grateful Dead, and of course, the Rolling Stones.
They would all be performing on a stage that was just thirty-nine inches off the ground and surrounded on all sides by over 300,000 attendees. Apparently, this had been planned to create a more “intimate” experience.
From what I could tell, waivers were not involved.
For the sake of time, I can’t give you a minute-by-minute analysis of the event, but I can still provide a basic timeline of all that happened.
Tumblr media
So, everything went relatively smoothly as Santana performed their set, but it was only downhill from there. As the day progressed, the crowd started fighting each other, and the “security” sure as hell didn’t help matters. At some point, someone knocked over one of the Angel’s motorcycles, which was likely an accident. However, the Angels were already pretty pissy, and plus, rule number one when it comes to the Angels is “Don’t mess with the motorcycles.” So, the Angels, already high thanks to someone spiking the beer with acid, started indiscriminately assaulting audience members they didn’t like with sawed-off pool cues and motorcycle chains, including a guy who was running around naked and someone else who was trying to take pictures of the stage. One woman who called in to a radio station the next day reported that she saw five fistfights, and the Angels were involved in every last one. She tried to intervene, but the people around her warned her not to, fearing for both their safety and hers.
Tumblr media
During Jefferson Airplane’s set, Marty Balin was knocked unconscious when he tried to intervene in a fight between the audience members and Hell’s Angels. When Paul Kantner grabbed a mic and sarcastically thanked the Angels, Bill Fritsch grabbed the mic from him and started arguing with him about it. In addition, Denise Jewkes, lead singer of Ace of Cups, was hit in the head with a beer bottle and suffered a skull fracture. Her husband, Noel, had to lead his six-month pregnant wife through the sea of people so she could get medical attention. The Stones later paid her medical expenses. By this point, news of what was going on out front was beginning to seep into the backstage areas and even back to the Stones at their hotel room, but most of the acts decided to press on regardless. However, after hearing about what happened to Marty from Michael Shrieve, the guys from the Grateful Dead decided to book it.
Yeah. Thanks a bunch, assholes.
Tumblr media
The crowd did calm down a bit for the Flying Burrito Brothers’ set, because really, who can say no to Gram Parsons? However, that calm was only temporary. When the Stones arrived by helicopter, it wasn’t even ten seconds before someone punched Mick Jagger in the face. Also, Bill Wyman missed the first helicopter out, so the Stones were already going to be late.
And then Mick Jagger decided he wanted to be all dramatic and shit, so the crowds were forced to wait until nightfall for the Stones’ set.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, during Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young’s set, a “stoned out” Angel reportedly stabbed Stephen Stills in the leg whenever he stepped forward to sing, leaving trails of blood running down his leg.
Tumblr media
By the time the Stones were anywhere near ready to take the stage, things started to degenerate even further, to the point where the Angels (who already despised Mick’s scrawny, English arse) pretty much forced the Stones to go out on stage regardless of whether they were ready or not, just to prevent a full-scale riot.
It was in that moment Mick knew… he fucked up royally.
Tumblr media
As Mick observed the constant fighting between the audience members and Hell’s Angels during the show as he sang “Sympathy for the Devil”, he desperately, defeatedly, pleaded for calm, his usual bravado completely absent for once in his adult life. However, it was clear that the Angels already weren’t going to listen to the flamboyant musician they clearly hated, and tensions had been simmering too long throughout the day, so Mick’s pleas for peace practically went completely unheard.
Mick Taylor later said, “The Hell’s Angels had a lot to do with it. The people that were working with us getting the concert together thought it would be a good idea to have them as a security force. But I got the impression that because they were a security force they were using it as an excuse. They’re just very, very violent people. I think we expected probably something like the Hell’s Angels that were our security force at Hyde Park, but of course they’re not the real Hell’s Angels, they’re completely phony. These guys in California are the real thing — they’re very violent. I had expected a nice sort of peaceful concert. I didn’t expect anything like that in San Francisco because they are so used to having nice things there. That’s where free concerts started, and I thought a society like San Francisco could have done much better. We were on the road when it was being organized, we weren’t involved at all. We would have liked to have been. Perhaps the only thing we needed security for was the Hell’s Angels. I really don’t know what caused it but it just depressed me because it could have been so beautiful that day”
(I feel so sorry for Mick Taylor. The kid was just twenty years old when he saw all this bullshit going down.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, what I’m going to do with this go-around, before I describe what happened next, is tell you a little bit about Meredith Hunter. He was just eighteen when he went to Altamont with his girlfriend, Patti Bredehoft. The only reason he had a gun that day, according to his family, was for self-protection, given that he was basically a young black man with a white girlfriend in a sea of white people, at a time and place where racism was still very much prevalent. Allegedly, the gun didn’t even have any bullets in it; it would just be a last resort to deter anyone giving him trouble. Like most 18-year-olds, he was also a bit naive, and though his girlfriend wanted to leave, he convinced her to stay for the Rolling Stones’ set. At one point, he was already set upon by Hell’s Angels, but that time, it was only a scuffle. What is known is that he was high on methamphetamines, but what isn’t known for sure is his general demeanour. Some said he had a crazy look in his eye, while others said that he seemed calm, though he was upset at the violence.
And then, all hell broke loose.
youtube
Tumblr media
As “Under My Thumb” was ending, cameras found an opening into the crowd, into which stumbled Meredith Hunter. He grabbed his gun, a .22 calibre revolver, which was visible to cameras against Patti’s dress. When Alan Passaro saw this, he immediately assumed that Hunter was trying to shoot somebody, and started stabbing him (this was, again, in plain view of a bunch of cameras). Subsequently, he was repeatedly kicked in the head, trying to tell his attackers that he wasn’t trying to kill anybody. However, the Angels were convinced that he was attempting to shoot somebody, and that’s essentially what the narrative became- that a crazed black kid high on meth tried to shoot Mick or one of the other Rolling Stones (which, believe me, I’d be salty about even if I hadn’t read a Rolling Stone article about him).
It was little Mick Taylor who managed to keep things rolling (a bit) by suggesting they play “Brown Sugar”, which had only been recorded the previous Tuesday.
Somehow, after the vicious beating he’d suffered, Meredith was still alive, and a doctor at the scene looked at him and recommended that he get immediate medical attention, or else he’d die. However, the only helicopter at the scene was reserved for the Rolling Stones, and the pilot made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that no one else was allowed on board. Hunter ended up dying of his injuries while they waited for emergency responders.
I don’t quite know how well the situation was explained, but still, dick move on the part of the helicopter pilots.
In addition to Hunter, three other people died, one after falling into a fast-moving irrigation duct while tripping on LSD, and two others were killed in their sleeping bags during a hit-and-run accident. There were also four reported births, one of which occurred during Jefferson Airplane’s set.
The day after the concert, the Stones flew back to London, as the news slowly disseminated throughout the world.
youtube
In 1971, a documentary about the tragedy, Gimme Shelter, was released to the public. However, in the years since, many have argued that is meant to excuse the Stones’ actions and is an apologist piece of media. Still, the footage itself does show a chilling account of what happened that day, if you can ignore that overall narrative (though you really shoudn’t ignore that).
Alan Passaro was later charged with Meredith’s murder, but was acquitted by an all-white jury, who likely either excused the crime due to racism, or just didn’t have the full story.
After Altamont, just about everybody turned on each other. The audience members, many of whom undoubtedly still live with the scars of that fateful night blamed the Hell’s Angels, whereas the Angels laid some of the blame on the audience members, and most of it on the people who hired them, whilst the Stones said they’d never work with the Hell’s Angels again (which, allegedly, almost resulted in some of them trying to assassinate Mick Jagger).
In my honest, humble, not-so-professional opinion, I say the blame should be laid with the Stones’ management, Mick Jagger, the Grateful Dead, and the Hell’s Angels. The concert should have been planned over a matter of months instead of weeks, held in a proper venue, and above all else, not had fucking Hell’s Angels as security guards.
While the Grateful Dead came out of it rather unscathed (mostly because they didn’t play), it’s been said that the Stones lost quite a bit of their edge. It’s easy to say that they grew up a lot because of this event, becoming a lot humbler, and a lot less greedy and risky as a direct result of this. It’s even to a point where people haven’t liked much of what they’ve put out since the 1980’s. Santana and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young declined to have their performances shown in Gimme Shelter, and have since spoken very little about the event. Meanwhile, Alan Passaro drowned in 1985, though the circumstances of his death are suspicious, to say the least. Meanwhile, Meredith Hunter’s family still deals with the trauma of his death, and aside from a $10,000 ($70,708.59) settlement, the Stones never even approached the family to offer their condolences, or even a half-assed explanation (I don’t recommend the latter approach). The Hell’s Angels also had their reputations as dangerous outsiders cemented by this event, given that they’d caused at least 75-90% of the violence that took place that day.
Keith Richards has maintained his “fuck-all” attitude about this through the years, even writing in his 2010 autobiography “In actual fact, if it hadn’t been for the murder, we’d have thought it a very smooth gig by the skin of its fucking teeth.”
There is a reason that many of the dreams of the 60′s died at Altamont, and all the evidence you really need is the footage that was shot that night and the words of the people who saw the fiasco first hand.

Wombwell Rainbow Interviews
I am honoured and privileged that the following writers local, national and international have agreed to be interviewed by me. I gave the writers two options: an emailed list of questions or a more fluid interview via messenger.
The usual ground is covered about motivation, daily routines and work ethic, but some surprises too. Some of these poets you may know, others may be new to you. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.
Neal Zetter
Neal is an award-winning comedy performance poet, children’s author, and entertainer with a 25-year background in communication management and mentoring. He uses his interactive rhythmic, rhyming poetry to to develop literacy, confidence, creativity and communications skills in 3-103 yr olds, making words and language accessible for the least engaged whilst streeeeeeetching the most able.
Workshops & Performing
Most days Neal is found performing or running fun poetry writing or performance workshops in schools and libraries with children, teens, adults or families. He has worked in all 33 London Boroughs and many, many other UK cities. More challenging poetry projects have involved workshops for people with brain injury, mental health, drug and alcohol problems, offenders, those with learning difficulties, homeless, other special needs including not having English as a first language.
Neal also produces adult comedy performance poetry and has nearly 30 years of experience appearing at e.g. West End comedy clubs, the Royal Festival Hall, various festivals, in the centre circle of a League 2 football pitch (!) and even a funeral (!!). He ran his own spoken word-based comedy club (Word Down Walthamstow) 2009-13. Neal has compiled and hosted/compered shows with the likes of John Cooper Clarke, Attila the Stockbroker, Michael Rosen and shared bills with Harry Hill, Phil Jupitus, Mark Lamaar, Omid Djalili and more.
Books
Neal children’s comedy poetry books, all published by Troika, include:
For 6-13 year olds:
Gorilla Ballerina (A Book of Bonkers Animal Poems) – a collection of wacky poems about weird animals
Invasion of the Supervillains (Raps and Rhymes to Worry the Galaxy) – evil companion book to ‘Superheroes’ (below)
Yuck & Yum (A Feast of Funny Food Poems), with poetry pal Joshua Seigal
Here Comes the Superheroes (Raps and Rhymes to Save the Galaxy) – in the Reading Agency’s top 15 children’s poetry books
It’s Not Fine to Sit on a Porcupine – in BookTrust’s top 20 children’s poetry books
Bees in My Bananas – a Wishing Shelf Award winner
For 2-6 year olds:
SSSSNAP! Mister Shark
Odd Socks!
Due Sept 2020 and Sept 2021 for 6-13 year olds
When the Bell Goes (A Rapping Rhyming Trip through Childhood) – a semi-autobiographical poetry collection on the theme of childhood covering growing up, school and family life
Scared? (Poems from the Darker Side) – a collection of funny, and maybe a few more serious ones, about many aspects of fear
The Interview
1. When and why did you start writing poetry?
I wrote my first poem when I was six – a limerick which now appears in the intro to my first book, Bees in My Bananas. I always enjoyed making people laugh and have had an inbuilt sense of rhythm and rhyming for as long as I can remember. So I began writing poetry as naturally as some people learn a new language – there was no grand plan but I have never stopped writing poems since I was a tender year 2 student. And the poem?
There was an old lady from Hull And she bumped into a bull The bull said ‘Ow!” Bashed into a cow And the cow crashed into the wall!
Not a classic but Love Me Do was hardly the best Beatles song, just a fab start!
2. Who introduced you to poetry?
My Dad used to read to me in bed at night before I was able too. I especially liked the poems he read, the main two that stuck in my head were the classic Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss and The Train to Timbuctoo from Margaret Wise Brown (Google it – it’s a great single-poem book as is the aforementioned ‘Cat’). Both were beautifully rhythmic with strong rhyming and contained many new and exciting fun words, some made up and some that made no sense to me at all – but that’s the joy of poetry and reading!
3. How aware are and were you of the dominating presence of older poets traditional and contemporary?
Great question! Let me answer it in parts. When I I was  a primary school child I wasn’t really aware of poets apart from Dr Seuss as mentioned in my earlier reply. I knew poems, but not so aware who wrote them.
In secondary school I studied Eng Lit to A Level and regularly had rows with my teacher over my frustration at studying Wordsworth, Coleridge, Gerard Manly Hopkins, Keats etc. I absolutely see they were fine poets but they didn’t speak to ME a teenager in 1970s London into punk rock, footy and left-wing politics. I needed to hear poems about those topics and the other things in my life. Of course she never agreed with me 😎.
(So, as I was musically inept, despite my love of it, I started to write song lyrics and worked with tune writers to construct songs In a (completely naff) local band (but we thought we were superstars). Bernie Taupin was my role model but I loved the Stones’ land Clash lyrics and Webber/Rice musicals.)
In my very late teens and beyond I started to write poems prolifically but I still could not name any poets of renown. My home-produced books (6) sold in less than three figures and that wasn’t enough as I needed to share my work, after all every poet is a communicator. I saw adverts in Time Out magazine for performance poetry clubs and comedy clubs in the West End and that’s where it all REALLY began for me. It was a scene and for the first time I got to meet and mix with other poets and learn how to produce the right kind of poems to entertain and engage an audience, as well as make them laugh. So, no longer in a vacuum, I compered for and performed with the likes of John Cooper Clarke (the Godfather of performance poetry!), Attila the Stockbroker, Porky the Poet (AKA Phil Jupitus) etc.
Nearly all the poets I’d met or read since my school days were older and, in 1989 when my performance career really started, I was very aware of their presence and influence – I looked up to them. Now I guess, 60 next week, I try to affect younger poets and those starting out in the same way: advising, encouraging and mentoring. And that’s something I really enjoy doing.
Maybe in 50 yrs time or less, my poetry will be as irrelevant to people then as the poets I studied at A Level were to me. And there will be nothing wrong with that. I get it!
3.1. What is the right kind of poem to engage and entertain?
One with a repetitive rhythm, strong rhyme and a chorus/repeated word/line. This works well with my children’s poetry (in class and on assemblies) and adult poetry (in clubs, at arts events etc). We call them ‘call and response’ poems in the trade or often I refer to them as ‘interactive’ and I should add the poems must be about a topic people can relate to in a voice and with words that speak to them.
4. What is your daily writing routine?
I don’t have one. I try to write at different times of the day, on different days of the week and in as many different places as possible. Doing that means there are no times I feel I am unable to write and that must be a good thing. I guess indie cafes are my favourite places but, as I don’t drive and travel by public transport, I do loads of writing on trains, tubes and buses. Other regular haunts are the British Library, Foyle’s Bookshop in Charing X Road and home of course
5. What motivates you to write?
I am very self-motivated when it comes to writing. I always feel I have something to say about things that other people will find interesting too. I am never stuck for ideas, have never experienced writers’ block and keep a long list of topics for future poems. I have written my next three books due out the next three Septembers am already planning more. And the ideas themselves come from keeping my ears and eyes constantly open and writing about What’s around me and my experiences e.g. people I meet, places I go to, things I hear on the news etc
6. How do the writers you read when you were young influence you today?
My influences are threefold:
The aforementioned Dr Seuss and Mary Wise Brown books inspired my rhythmic, rhyming and comedy poems. Other poets like Edward Lear and Spike Milligan did the same.
I have always had a love of music too as I explained so, as I used to write song lyrics it’s not surprising that my poems, as well as being very rhythmic and containing strong rhymes also have choruses and a strong use of repetition.
Finally, since before I could even read, I have had a love of superhero comics, especially Marvel. I used to look at the pictures when my brother collected them and when old enough to read myself I started avidly buying and collecting them myself and have never really stopped. In fact I bought this month’s new Marvel Avengers comic today. These streeeeetched my imagination, developed my vocab and taught me a lot about what was going on in the world around me e.g. politics, Vietnam Nam War, life/death, relationships, history, space and science etc. And of course this love of comics also inspired both my Superheroes and Supervillains poetry books. Keen comic fans will immediately spot some of the styles and influences from the 1960/70 Marvel and DC comics in particular. Without any doubt at all, if I never read these comics I would not have become a poet and author.
7. Whom of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?
As I read mainly blogs, auto-biogs, social history, popular science and other non-fiction my book choices are theme-led rather than author-led so I have not got too many favourites. However I especially like Bill Bryson, Mark Kermode, Jon Ronson and Malcolm Gladwell as they all have a fantastic writing style and a passion for their subject. The last four books I read are Van Gogh’s Ear, The Radium Girls, Chernobyl and A History of the World in 21 Women with many Marvel comics squeezed in between.
The poets I especially admire are the ones that have been on the scene for many years like Michael Rosen, Brian Moses, John Cooper Clarke and Benjamin Zephaniah – you have to take your hat off to them for the quality and quantity of their output. I hope I achieve at least equal longevity as I certainly want to continue what I do until I leave this planet.
8. Why do you write, as opposed to doing anything else?
I write because I must. A poet is what I am not what I do. So, while I might be able to lose interest In other hobbies, jobs and pastimes, I can never give up being a poet.
9What would you say to someone who asked you “How do you become a writer?”
Read, write, read, write, read, write adI infinitum. Like anything you wish to do well, the more you practise and immerse yourself in it the better you will get. And write from the heart about what you love, like, dislike and hate – about what you feel and what matters to you – and you will produce your best work.
8.1. Why write children’s books?
I write poetry for children, teens and adults but, to date, have only produced children’s books. This is because I make my living performing and running workshops in schools virtually every day so the book buyers are there in front of me. Most days end with a book sale with children I have worked with wanting a memento of the day, signed and dedicated. Given the above my writing is certainly weighted to the younger market especially as, sadly, not many teens or adults want to buy poetry books, even if they enjoy listening to poems for their age group.
9. Tell me about the writing projects you have on at the moment.
In my biog you will see details of the next two books I have due in Sept 2020 and 2021, both written. I am working on my 2022 poetry book now (the title is a secret!) and am looking at both an anthology of mixed poems and an EY/KS1 book for the near future.

Strangely, the media have suddenly taken an intense interest in the case of pedophile and major Democratic donor Jeffrey Epstein. In 2005, the Palm Beach police were told by the mother of a young girl in West Palm Beach that her daughter had been brought to the Democratic donor’s mansion and asked to have sex with him for money. This kicked off an intensive, one-year undercover investigation. The police sifted through Epstein’s garbage and interviewed 17 witnesses, including the housemen, who told of sex toys and dildos left behind after the underage girls left. One of Epstein’s procurers, a 20-year-old local woman named Haley Robson, who was paid $200 for every teenaged girl she brought to Jeffrey, was cooperating with police, telling them she was like “Heidi Fleiss.” They obtained statements from five of Epstein’s young victims, who said they’d been paid $200 to $300 to engage in various sex acts with him. Police raided Epstein’s home, finding explicit photographs of teenaged girls, incriminating phone records — and one girl’s high school transcript. But when the police chief brought this mountain of evidence to Palm Beach County’s Democratic prosecutor Barry Krischer, he punted, charging the Democrat child molester with only one count of soliciting prostitution — yes, the child victims were labeled “prostitutes” — and offered Epstein probation. Perhaps Krischer was exhausted, having just spent three years hounding Rush Limbaugh for abusing back pain medication. Palm Beach Police Chief Michael Reiter exploded in rage. (Meanwhile, Epstein claimed to be the victim of an anti-Semitic conspiracy on Palm Beach.) Chief Reiter wrote an open letter to Krischer asking the Democrat to remove himself from the case. Then he turned to the Bush administration to seek justice against a Democratic donor/accused child rapist. “But pay no attention to Jeffrey Epstein and his roster of Democratic enablers — this is a Trump scandal!” As stories go, a child sex case involving a Palm Beach billionaire was pretty big. It was covered in the British press, in Florida media, at The New York Post and at Fox News. Bill O’Reilly led with the story on his Fox News show. But CNN and MSNBC did not breathe a word about a Democratic prosecutor refusing to hold a Democratic child rapist accountable. Epstein had given more than $145,000 to Democratic candidates and causes, including Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. He was a big Israel backer. Bill Clinton and Democratic activist Ron Burkle were frequent guests on Epstein’s private plane, dubbed the “Lolita Express.” And Krischer was a hero for his dogged pursuit of Rush Limbaugh! Why bring up all this unpleasantness? Thanks to Chief Reiter, President Bush’s U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Alex Acosta, did take the case, despite the fact that only Epstein’s child rapes on his plane, on his private island or with girls brought across state lines would make it a federal case. As a result of the (Republican-led) federal investigation, Epstein was finally required to plead guilty to two state felony charges, accept a sentence of two years in prison, register as a sex offender, and pay restitution to his victims. Still no coverage by MSNBC or CNN. Inasmuch as Epstein was pleading guilty to a state charge, the matter of his confinement was out of the U.S. attorney’s hands. It was Democratic county prison officials — not the feds — who placed Epstein in a private wing of the county jail and allowed him to spend 12 hours a day, six days a week at his Palm Beach mansion throughout his 13-month “imprisonment.” In 2014, the brilliant conservative lawyer Paul Cassell and Bradley Edwards brought suit against the federal prosecutors for violating the Crime Victims’ Rights Act in the Epstein case. As bad as the U.S. attorney’s office was, at least it did something. Democrat Krischer gave Epstein a walk. But no matter how appalling Krischer’s behavior was, the Crime Victims’ Rights Act only applies to federal prosecutions. When Cassell and Edwards filed their case, they included the claims of various Epstein victims, who reported that the men at “Orgy Island,” where underage girls were being used as “sex slaves,” included Bill Clinton, Alan Dershowitz and Prince Andrew. CNN gave extensive coverage to the celebrity-filled allegations, inviting Dershowitz on to defend himself and lavishing attention on the irrelevant prince. Amazingly, but characteristically, not once did CNN mention that Bill Clinton was named in the pleadings. Only one show on MSNBC, “All In With Chris Hayes,” so much as acknowledged the bombshell case, also without letting on that Clinton had been named as a frequent Epstein guest by the child victims. But recently, the very news outlets that spiked any news about this case for the past 13 years are suddenly hot on the trail of Jeffrey Epstein. Why the newfound sense of decency? The answer is: Because they found a Trump connection. There’s a 2002 quote from Donald Trump saying nice things about Epstein and photographic proof that Epstein was one of the hundreds of thousands of people who have been to Mar-a-Lago. (There are rumors he has also been to the Grand Canyon and the Empire State Building.) This is how the modern American media work: I’ll tell the same story that we’ve been frantically suppressing for a decade, connect it to Trump — and win a Pulitzer Prize! Here is MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell describing Epstein a few weeks ago in a single segment: “… a friend of Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein … “… child sex trafficker and child rapist and friend of Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein … “… a billionaire friend of Donald Trump’s …” Epstein was a “friend” of Donald Trump’s the same way he is a “friend” of Pinch Sulzberger by virtue of reading The New York Times. He’s been to Trump’s club. (That is, until Trump barred him for propositioning the underage daughter of a member.) But pay no attention to Jeffrey Epstein and his roster of Democratic enablers — this is a Trump scandal! It seems that the U.S. attorney who oversaw the federal prosecution, Alex Acosta, is currently Trump’s Labor secretary. Trump didn’t know Acosta’s name during the Epstein prosecution, but liberals think they’ve unraveled Trump’s decade-long scheme to reward Acosta for being lenient on Epstein — aka “friend of Donald Trump’s.” The silver lining is that we finally have a way to make Hillary Clinton pay for her crimes. Trump has to appoint her to his Cabinet. Then we’ll see the entire American press corps chanting, “Lock her up!”

Mascara Tears.
The year is 1996 and I am twelve years old. I have just started junior high, and my mother has just allowed me to go to the movies alone. “Alone” meaning my friend, one year my senior, and me got dropped off by my mom and her sky blue Oldsmobile and picked up by her mom and her sage green mini van. The movie we saw was Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. It was kind of a big deal because it was the first movie I saw in a theater on my own, with no grown-ups present. I had no idea what Romeo + Juliet was really about. I knew it was about romance. I knew that Romeo and Juliet were “star cross’d”, but I had no idea what that phrase meant. I was, after all, twelve years old. All I really knew about the film was that the advertising campaign had dominated my YM and TEEN magazines the entire summer prior to its release. It was a genius marketing campaign, for the record. They had stuck postcards in every issue of every teen-oriented magazine on the stands. If you collected them all they pieced together, like a puzzle, to spell words and connect scenes from the movie. I think this goes without saying, but I had all of them.
At the time, the most confusing thing to me about this film was not the ending, although it haunted and upset me for weeks, if not months after. I was confused from the second the movie started, and those of you who’ve seen it know what I’m talking about. It was set in present day, but the language was old-timey. They called their guns “swords”? Romeo took drugs??? I have to add all the question marks here. The first ten minutes alone are enough to make a person feel insane. But then the fight between the two families breaks, and the music softens, and we see Romeo. We see Romeo aka a baby faced Leonardo DiCaprio, and we hear Radiohead, and everything feels warm and good. Everything makes sense.
Tumblr media
(honestly cigarettes are gross except in this movie. I don't make the rules.)
I remember sitting there in the dark theater after the movie ended, listening to “Exit Music For A Film”, one of my favorite Radiohead songs, which was written specifically for the end credits of this film. I remember being confused and angry. I remember my friend crying, and complaining about her mascara running. I remember being jealous because I didn’t wear mascara regularly. I only wore it when my mother received a free sample in her Lancôme gift with purchase. Looking back on it, some of my anger probably came from the fact that I was robbed of the dramatics of those black streams running down my face. I wanted not only to feel sad, but to look sad too. Feeling sad without really looking sad just felt like lying.
Tumblr media
(all the cool girls had this mascara in their backpacks. I died of happiness every time my mom would give me one.)
I came home to find my mother in her room.
“Have you seen that movie before? I mean have you read that play??”, I demanded.
“Yes.” She replied while folding laundry. She was more interested about sock matches, I could tell.
“Well do you know that they DIE at the end??” I said, too loudly, for shock factor. I wanted her to know how seriously I took this.
“Yes. It’s Shakespeare.” She picked up a sock, matched it with its sister and tossed it in the pile.
My eyes widened. I almost couldn’t believe she was so cavalier about it all.
“Well what was all that then? I thought this story was like about true love and stuff!”
“Well it’s a love story, but not all love stories are happy stories.”
 Preach, mom. Preach.
I always had a liking for sadder movies over happy movies. My favorite movie as a kid was Beaches, followed by Untamed Heart, both devastatingly sad, and my favorites only got sadder as I got older. But before Romeo + Juliet, I don’t know that I saw the beauty in sadness. I think about that movie experience often, especially when I'm feeling sad. It evoked a lot of strong emotions in me that i had never felt at the same time before. The perfect mixture of sadness and anger, sprinkled with beauty throughout, a deadly cocktail of emotions. The ironic thing, maybe, is that the only kind of love stories I wanted to watch after that one were tragic love stories. Some of my favorite movies today are tragic love stories, and I watch them over and over again. Though the stories are often different, at the core, the emotional cocktail is the same. The only difference now is that I wear mascara when I watch them. You know, for proof.
Why am I telling you about the experience I had watching this movie that you have probably never heard of? What's the point of sharing my sadness and anger over some film that doesn't really affect my life at all? It's because being a teenager is hard. When I was one, I thought it was the hardest thing ever. False. Being an adult is hard too sometimes. Turns out life is just hard no matter what! What fresh nonsense is this? It turns out that despite being difficult and sad at times, life is also really beautiful. One way to contribute to that beauty is to create art from the pain you're feeling. Think about it: if everyone always felt included, if no one was different, if the world were a perfect place, how much art would we have? How many songs or books would never be written? How many of our favorite paintings or movies wouldn't exist? All forms of art have always been a huge part of my recovery from depression and anxiety. I often found solace in film and television, music and books, and in turn I created art of my own. I wrote in journals every day from the ages of 13 to 25 (when I got older I blogged on a computer rather than wrote in a journal) which resulted in me being a good writer and speaker. That trip to the movies back in 1996 inspired me to write this piece for you, and hopefully help you feel a little better about yourself, and maybe learn something too.
When I was 13 I took a strong liking to makeup and hair color. I would babysit most weekends to make money, and then turn around and buy makeup and music with it (I have never been a good saver). I would come home from babysitting and sit in front of the mirror in my bedroom and consider my face; what was pleasant about it (my eye color), what needed work (my brows, always my brows). I started to rip pages out of my mom's fashion magazines that contained makeup looks that I loved, and on these weekend nights I would put music on and try to recreate these looks on myself. My music choices ranged everywhere from Janice Kapp Perry's “The Light Within” to Alanis Morissette's “Jagged Little Pill”. My likes have always been a bit of a contradiction to themselves. All this practice on my own face led to me being good at doing makeup on others which led me to being a successful makeup artist for the last fifteen years. I have been blessed with the ability to see the beauty in others, and in turn helping them see it in themselves. Makeup is such a fun way to be able to do that for people. I'm so happy to make someone feel good about themselves, in some small way. Makeup is a fun way to express myself and to make myself look better sometimes, but I know that real beauty is on the inside, and no amount of makeup can cover up an ugly soul or a mean spirit. The Lord looks at our insides to judge us, not our outsides. He doesn't care what you weigh, or if you know how to highlight and contour. He doesn't even care if your brows are uneven! How's that for unconditional love?
When you turn your pain into art, you can inspire others, and that is a beautiful thing. Art in some form has always inspired me to see the light in dark times. I am so grateful that suffering isn't always in vain. If we can find something beautiful in our journey, we should share it with others. Paint. Sing. Write. Act. Take a ceramics class at school! All of those things have helped me at one point in my life, with the exception of ceramics, because I actually FAILED that class my senior year and had to take a correspondence self-help class in order to graduate. Well guess what Mr. B?? That self help class was actually really great and way more helpful than your ceramics class ever was! I may not know how to throw a pot but I do know that if you want to have enough time for everything, you must put your big rocks in the mason jar before you put your pebbles in. If you are confused, see: Steven R. Covey's “Seven Habits for Highly Effective Teens” for more on the rocks in the mason jar object lesson. It's a classic.
This concludes somewhat messy, very heartfelt guide on how to survive your teen years. I actually could write for months on this subject, and I have over the years on my old blogs. Its kind of difficult to fit all of my thoughts into shorter, cohesive pieces of writing, so I apologize if I didn't do a great job. I have to confess I was nervous to contribute to this website because I know how many young people it reaches. I actually had a harder time writing these pieces than I have writing anything else, and I have written for blogs before. It was hard for me to pin down what I wanted you young girls to know most. And because I have a big mouth, and I never know when to stop talking, I will leave you with a few (more) pieces of advice before I go. I think the thing thing I wish so badly that I had worked harder on long ago when I was just a young girl, back before I heard anyone say I was gross, is loving myself, and being grateful for the body I have. I think it still would have been hard to hear those words because words like that are never easy to hear, but if I had known how beautiful I was, and that my body was something to be celebrated, I wouldn't have spent so much time telling myself that boy was right. I still struggle with body image. Sometimes I think about what it was like before I came to earth, and how what I wanted more than anything was a body. Now that I have one, I am mean to it, and I say that I hate it too often when I should be celebrating all the amazing wonderful things it can do. I can run and hike and tell jokes. I can see beautiful things and hear amazing music. I can touch furry cats and hold hands with people I love. My legs carry me around Disneyland. So much to be thankful for, yet I waste time tearing myself apart and listing all the ways that I fall short. It's such a shame.
Figure out what makes you unique and celebrate those things, don't hide them. Tell yourself you are beautiful every day because you are. Makeup and clothes and hairstyles are fun to experiment with but they aren't what leads to true happiness or beauty. Beauty on the outside cannot compensate for ugliness on the inside. If you ever find yourself in a position with anyone where you are campaigning for them to like or love you, get out immediately. Real love and friendship does not have to be bargained for. Protect your words and your kisses; don't give either away too easily. The boy who loves you most is the one who believes that your insides are beautiful, who looks at you the same whether you are fat, skinny, happy, or sad. True love isn't based on superficial things. Money can't buy happiness but it can solve a lot of problems, so set aside some money now so that one day you can help build a life for yourself. Know that your worth is not based on how many boys like you, or when you get your first boyfriend, but on how the savior sees you. He sees you for all that you are and all that you can be. He truly knows what you are capable of. You have a father in heaven who loves you and has a plan for you. Look to Him in times of trial or confusion and he will guide you in the best direction.
There's a hill about twenty minutes from my house that I used to drive up every weekend. I would put on some of my favorite songs and sing (and cry) along to the lyrics. I would park my car at the top of this hill and look out at the thousands of twinkling lights and try to pick out anything familiar from my drive. Sometimes I would recognize a building or spot an intersection, but mostly all the lights just twinkled together like glitter in the sun. Every time I looked at those lights it baffled me that an entire city existed within them. Houses, shopping centers, gas stations, happy people, sad people, lonely people... they all exist there in that sea of lights. Yet I can't see them. Stop lights and buildings that moments ago towered over me in my car are now invisible. I can't tell one from the next. Our lives are like cities; busy and lonely, full of hard stuff and happy stuff, and ultimately one big beautiful glitter bomb. How lucky are we to know that there is someone on the hill who can see every hard and beautiful thing? It's someone who loves us and wants nothing more than for us to make it back to Him one day. As you follow guidance from your Heavenly Father, believe in yourself. Know your worth. Trust in your talents and abilities. Speak kindly of yourself and others. Be a friend. And don't over-tweeze your eyebrows. Trust me on that one. You'll thank me one day.

Hello my bookish lovelies! As I am still in the process of reading not one but two books I hope to do a review for, I decided that I should do something for you guys to get to know me better. Today, I am doing The Fifty Bookish Questions Book Tag! Since this will be quite lengthy, I’ll try to keep it short, sweet, and to the point. Here we go everybody!
1. What was the last book you read?
This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab (Check out my review!)
2. Was it a good one?
I’m still feeling overly-emotional about it… It was so good!
3. What made it good?
The characters, story line, the way she depicted the characters and the places they lived and visited… It was just truly breathtaking.
4. Would you recommend it to other people?
Absolutely! Done it quite a few times already to be honest.
5. How often do you read?
I tried to read frequently but being a mom, working full time, plus taking care of things around the house, it tends to make it hard to read.
6. Do you like to read?
Of course I do!
7. What was the last bad book you read?
If I had to choose a “bad book”, I guess I would have to say Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber.
8. What made you dislike it?
You don’t get to truly know the characters and about how their relationship grew, you were just thrown into it and expected it to be romantic all because she was a teenager and he was a vampire… Plus the ending wasn’t that great either, but that’s for a whole different time.
9. Do you wish to be a writer?
Absolutely! But it’s just coming up with something to write about and if anyone is like me, I tend to lose track and stop and not go back to what I was doing. It’s a bad habit I know…
10. Has any book ever influenced you greatly?
Books have definitely influenced me overtime and I can truly say they have made me a better person. *Cough, Cough* Harry Potter.
11. Do you read fanfiction?
More than I should.
12. Do you write fanfiction?
I used to… (Embarrassed)
13. What’s your favorite book?
This is a tough one… I would probably have to say Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
14. What’s your least favorite book?
Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley hands down.
15. Do you prefer physical books or already on a device (like a Kindle)?
Definitely physical books.
16. When did you learn to read?
I started really being interested in reading at the age of 6 but growing up, I had difficulties reading that I had to get tutoring for until I was in 7th grade. Crazy right?
17. What is your favorite book you had to read in school?
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
18. What is your favorite book series?
Uhhh, Harry Potter of course!
19. Who is your favorite author?
I can’t just choose one!
20. What is your favorite genre?
Young Adult/Fantasy…. Also throw a little romance in there and I’m doing great!
21. Who is your favorite character in a book series?
August- The Savage Song
Jace- City of Bones
Molly Weasley- Harry Potter
I could go on but I think you guys get the point.
22. Has a book ever transported you somewhere else?
All the time.
23. Which book do you wish had a sequel?
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
24. Which book do you wish DIDN’T have a sequel?
Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley
25. How long does it take you to read a book?
Quite a while. But like I’ve said before, being a mom, working full-time, etc, tends to make it difficult to make time to read but I promise that I’ll be better at updating you guys just so you all know that I haven’t given up on a book, I am just taking a bit of time to get through it.
26. Do you like when books become movies?
I’m just going to be completely honest with you guys… No, I don’t usually like it when books become movies. I could make an entire post about this alone as to why I don’t enjoy it, but I’m going to save that for another day.
27. Which book was ruined by its movie adaptation?
By far I would have to say Maximum Ride by James Patterson
28. Which movie has done a book justice?
None.
29. Do you read newspapers?
Only the classifieds.
30. Do you read magazines?
No.
31. Do you prefer newspapers or magazines?
I guess it depends on what I’m reading about to be completely honest.
32. Do you read while in bed?
All the time! My husband tends to get mad at me because I’ll use the flashlight on my phone to read and it’s super bright.
33. Do you read while on the toilet?
Guilty…
34. Do you read while in the car?
When I’m the passenger yes, if I’m driving, I usually turn on a audio book.
35. Do you read while in the bath?
No, I have a fear of being electrocuted if I’m on my phone and I also fear that I’ll drop the book in the water.
36. Are you a fast reader?
No, I have to read each individual word which tends to slow me down.
37. Are you a slow reader?
Yes.
38. Where is your favorite place to read?
Either on the couch while my husband plays video games or on the bed. by myself. with no one to interrupt me.
39. Is it hard for you to concentrate while you read?
Absolutely.
40. Do you need a room to be silent while you read?
Most of the time, yes.
41. Who gave you your love for reading?
My best friend Hayes aka Gemini.
42. What book is next on your list?
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
43. When did you start to read chapter books?
I’ve been ready chapter books since I was in the third grade.
44. Who is your favorite children’s book author?
R. L. Stine. Yes I know I was a weird kid.
45. Which author do you think you’d be friends with?
Either Victoria Aveyard or Rainbow Rowell
46. Which author would you most want to interview?
J.K. Rowling obviously.
47. What book have you reread the most?
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
48. Which books do you consider “classics”?
I consider all books “classics” due to the idea that they will get old and to us, they will forever stay in our hearts.
49. Which books do you think should be taught in every school?
Personally I didn’t do well with the pressure of being forced to read a book (as to why I had to have tutoring for years.) I think reading comes naturally to some and should make you happy.
50. Which books should be banned from all schools?
I don’t believe you should ban a book from school. In order for people to learn and thrive and become open-minded, they shouldn’t have something taken away due to rules.
