Akiren who thinks he’s doing a really good job of hiding his crush on Akechi from the rest of the PTs but actually they just pretend they don’t know because they don’t want to have to listen to him go on and on about Akechi.

I need to know what goes on inside akechi’s head on the evening of october 24th.
like. look at it from his perspective. he comes to leblanc early. he has his priorities straight: he’s going to play some mind games, really get under joker’s skin.
(bear with me while I get serious about a profoundly unserious conversation)
he’s staking his claim on enemy territory. he’s sitting patiently, waiting for akiren to walk through the door. surely, it will intimidate his rival to know that he’s made himself at home in his living space. look how close he managed to slip without akiren noticing! he even went so far as to strike up a conversation with his odd barista caretaker. akechi would drop some quick political jargon here, reference some continental philosopher’s name there— all in the name of making akiren look totally incompetent.
really, joker should be terrified. he should feel violated, even. akechi would! hence:
Tumblr media
look— he’s so self satisfied! yes, he totally won this round!
🚨 BUZZER NOISE! 🚨
see, akechi is playing 4D chess. so is akiren! but they’re using drastically different playbooks. we know this because goro akechi procedes to get hit with the following:
Tumblr media
I know you as the player don’t need to select that dialogue option (I could go on about the implications of that, but other posts have already said it better). but you can! and I, for one, do.
not to get too deep on what is obviously a joke post, but I think this offers some insight into those little rants that akechi goes on sometimes. you know what I’m talking about— “oh, you’re so special, so interesting, it’s like we were fated to meet each other!”
yes— they were basically fated to meet each other, but that’s not the point.
as silly as it sounds, the fact that dialogue options like this exist proves the oft-stated fact that akiren is the antithesis to akechi’s thesis.
akechi plans his interactions with akiren down to a tee, and still, akiren manages to throw akechi off his rhythm! every. single. time. nobody else does this.
part of this is because akiren sees his interactions with akechi for what they’re worth. it’s all a gamble, a chess match. akechi appreciates that akiren is an equal player in their game. he respects that. it takes intelligence to see a bluff for what it is, and to call it. flirtatiously, too!
that respect is what makes their relationship so compelling. it holds true whether you read what they have as love, hate, obsession, or, hell, even all of the above! you know it isn’t indifference, because that doesn’t make any sense coming from either of them.
call me crazy (I certainly deserve it) but if akiren responds “honey, I’m home” to akechi, he hears another message loud and clear: I see what you tried to do here, I’m calling you on it, and you don’t scare me. you’ve made your move, and I’m going to undo it with flair, because I’m joker, and you love it.
and when you look at it like that, it makes sense why little things might set off akechi’s thoroughly-stated appreciation of akiren. they aren’t “little” to him at all. I’m sure he doesn’t wax poetic just to fuel akiren’s ego, anyway. that isn’t quite his style.
and hey! even if akiren didn’t mean to communicate all of that (he totally did though), it doesn’t make the sentiment any less real to akechi! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. the guy has issues. let him plot the downfall of his enemies (real and perceived) in peace <3

So I said “I don’t think I actually like watching the Bachelor, I want to watch the Bachelor but it gets interrupted by a ghost or a serial killer”
And then @ravenoftheskyes said “That sounds like a Phantom Mirages AU”
And then we made Lockers And Love Notes, in which the Phantom Boys (sans Akechi) and Touma have to go undercover on the Not Bachelorette to investigate Mirage happenings and shenanigans ensue, featuring:
Yashiro as the show’s host because dating someone is bad for his idol image but helping [generic teen girl] find love is great for him
Aimi, the lead and teen bachelorette whose interactions with everyone can be summed up as
Aimi: Ryuji… I have feelings for you!
Narrator: Those feelings were friendship. She had never felt that before
Akiren keeps getting the Villain edits because he’s jealous of Ryuji and Aimi holding hands (he wants to hold Ryuji’s hand)
Aimi has no strong feelings towards Akiren whatsoever the producers just want him to stay on every week for Drama
She is absolutely crushing on Touma, Ryuji, and Yusuke though, which sucks because all three of them have boyfriends and they’re not trying to lead her on she is just kind of desperate for affection. Also
Tumblr media
While the dudes are doing that the girls are busy, you know, investigating corruption and finding out the source of the mirages and getting people’s Performa back and also trying to keep Goro from getting jealous (he’s still presumed dead. He doesn’t have to be he just doesn’t want to go back to being famous) every time Aimi and Yusuke do something (he will insist he is not jealous. He will be lying)
There’s more shit I’m forgetting because we’ve Been talking about this for awhile but uh yeah

Loving these so much! How would AkiRen and Goro be with a blind S/O?
Aww, glad you like these, Anon!!
I don’t know much about blind people’s experiences but I tried to read up on it as much as I could for those HCs!!
If anything I said was offensive, I’m so sorry!!
- Nexus.
Joker { Akira Kurusu }
✧ Though he is concerned at first about how they live their daily life, he eventually learns to relax a lot more. Blindness may be a disability but that does not mean it is fatal & they are certainly not helpless. Besides, there are different degrees. Whilst some may be completely blind, others may be able to perceive images. Either way, he does not pity or baby them because he knows that will lead nowhere.
✧ Akira will only help them if they explicitly ask for it. He trusts that they know when they need to ask for assistance & by assuming, he may end up making them uncomfortable. Although he is kind about everything & does not seem them as a burden, he is not overbearing.
✧ Scouting out ideas for dates becomes a new pastime. Often, he finds himself looking for places that do not require as much reading or places with braille. In new areas Akira is very patient with waiting for them to become accustomed to their surroundings, even if it takes them a long time.
Crow { Goro Akechi }
✧ 10/10 boyfriend. At first it takes a while for Akechi to adjust because he wants to look good for the public but at the same time he wants to not be overwhelming for them, so he eventually has to learn a balance. Crowds that attempt to gather for interviews are quickly dismissed, as he politely tells them that he is out with his significant other.
✧ Because they cannot see beautiful locations, he finds himself describing what things look like using other senses. From simple things such as grass to a beautiful sunset he will do his best to allow them to metaphorically visualise. Eventually he becomes very good at capturing sights with words & he begins to appreciate the value of his own sight.
✧ If anyone says anything bad about them, Akechi clenches their hand & walks away as calmly as possible with them in tow. His significant other is incredibly important as they are there for him even when the world has rejected him. Those who spoke particularly ill of them to the point where both of them are upset will be receiving a visit in the Metaverse.
✧ At first his apartment is not very friendly to blind people but considering the fact that Akechi keeps it rather clean, that means that it can be easy to learn the whereabouts of everything. If he is to move something, he would first inform them & let them feel the difference. Slowly it adapts to be a better source of comfort with some guidance on how to make it easier for them to navigate.

can you explain in more detail why you think the PT weren't good friends for akiren? i'm not asking out of hate or to start drama, i just never interpreted things that way and i'm genuinely curious. i don't think them being brainwashed by maruki makes them "bad friends", but i don't know if that's what you meant either. i'd love to read a proper explanation on this that isn't just people arguing in the notes of that post.
Hi! Yeah, I know the ~discourse~ climate is pretty touchy and not a good place to exchange ideas, so I’ll do my best to put my thoughts on this matter into words.
Settle in, bc this one is long.
I’ll start off by saying I don’t dislike the PT, nor do I think they’re bad people, and honestly I think they love Joker a lot! Ryuji calling Akira after his fake death and talking about how his ideas on what makes a hero have changed because of Akira genuinely makes me emotional, along with dozens of other scenes with the thieves! They’re good kids who could be really good friends to Akira but that’s not what’s shown in the game. I don’t think it’s controversial to say Akira’s relationships with all of his friends are transactional. That’s kind of the point, all of his confidants arise out of deals, give and take, and in the metanarrative of the game, that’s how it works. You as the player help these characters solve their problems, and through ranking their confidants up, you get access to more gameplay perks. So it’s pretty even!! But like,,Akira, the character, isn’t the player. There’s no in-story mechanic by which he can cash in friendship points for being-good-at-killing-things prizes. Yes, he uses those abilities to not die in the metaverse, but there is no literal, in-universe way to explain how hanging out with someone translates to [insert gameplay perk here]. So you have to look at what is physically happening in the story. Akira hangs out with the PT, stands there while they have drama with another irrelevant character, and then one way or another their problems get solved and they swear to be Akira’s blood brother or whatever. Akira is a crutch for these characters, and they say multiple times that they wouldn’t have been able to do what they did without him. So all of their shit gets handled and Akira gets?? Like actually gets?? What? Inquiries about his well-being? Offers to help him? Questions about his life, his interests? No,,,not really,, But he gets access to a super powerful persona!! Yay!!! Bc everyone knows he’s just a little shadow-killing machine, right? And even the relationships he does get something tangible (as in separate from the mechanics of the game) out of, like Kawakami’s, are built on the notion that if Akira stops providing for whatever reason, the relationship will end. So essentially, Akira is under the pressure of filling whatever role his friends need him in for however long at any time, and he’s been led to believe that if he stops or fails, he will stop receiving any reciprocal care and acceptance.
(And I know this is all gameplay stuff, I know it has to be like this to codify the complicated process of human relationships, I know all of that, I’m just trying to find a deeper layer bc that’s what I do.)
This whole thing comes into pretty clear focus for me during the third semester when you visit everyone in the false reality. Everyone is happy to see him, of course, but they’re clearly wrapped up in their own happiness. Which is understandable, again, I’m not saying the PT need to be attached to Akira to be good friends, but it all still feels off to me.
If they know Joker, then they’d know it’s weird that he just shows up and starts asking these pointed questions while they’re in the middle of something. All of their other interactions with him have been led by them. Yeah, Joker approaches them bc the player has decided to hang out with them, but the other character always chooses the activity and leads the discussion. Akira showing up out of nowhere and asking them to “remember” and “move on” and whatnot should be raising some major red flags. And it clearly does, since their memories do start to return, but they’re all too scared of losing their happiness that they nope out of the conversation as soon as possible, without stopping to consider why Joker might be trying to reach out to them like that. They’re his friends; they should know he wouldn’t just be trying to hurt them or make them unhappy. After all, their entire relationship with him up til that point has been exclusively about Joker trying to help them. This doesn’t make the PT bad people, running away is a totally natural reaction in that situation. They’re just kids, and their minds have been manipulated to a point, but it’s not like they don’t remember Joker or the way they’ve grown since meeting him. In fact many of them mention how much they’ve matured recently, but they never actually relate that back to Akira, despite him being the primary driving force behind most of their personal arcs, even though they definitely remember him. Translation vagueness or deliberate nod to the idea that the PT don’t actually credit Akira with all the hard work he did after their initial lip service? Hmmm. Anyway, their failure to recognize that Joker is struggling just demonstrates to me what was set up all throughout their confidant links, that their relationships are transactional and that they don’t necessarily consider Joker and his individual needs outside of what he provides for them. And when they no longer need him bc that hole has been filled, he simply doesn’t occupy the same place of importance in their lives.
Makoto’s flashback in particular stood out to me, bc it was from a moment where she was specifically talking about feeling like she finally found a place to belong with the Phantom Thieves (and by extension, with Joker), but then she desperately tries to brush it off. Obviously that sense of belonging wasn’t meaningful enough to her for her to want it back. And I’m not blaming her, of course, any teenager would choose to have their father back over being in a vigilante group lmao, I just thought it was telling that the devs decided to show us a scene that was originally meant to be heartwarming as an example of the harsh reality Makoto wants to forget. All of the flashbacks are from defining moments for the thieves, but that one specifically got me like *thinking emoji*
So his friends are hesitant, despite the fact that they must know something is wrong. It’s understandable, they all stand to lose a lot if someone messes with the status quo. I genuinely don’t think I would react any differently. But there is someone who reacts differently and against his own self-interest. It’s Goro, the one who has arguably the most to lose, who doesn’t turn away from Akira. He seeks Akira out and teams up with him to uncover what’s really going on, even though he has every reason to believe that prodding too deep will literally mean the end of his life. He forces Akira and himself to face the truth because he knows anything else would just be an insult to what they’ve suffered so far. He’s the only one who never flinches, and that, more than any of his friends’ come-to-jesusing (which Akira still has to initiate) is what Akira needs in that situation. For the first time (outside of the brief instances in the tutorial levels), we see a situation where Akira is actually the dependent one, the one who needs help, who needs support. And the only one who has ever provided that, unconditionally, without demanding anything in return, is Goro. I could go into how Goro’s confidant blows all of the others out of the water in terms of building both himself AND Akira as characters, but it’s been said already and by smarter people than me. But basically, despite competition being a core theme of their relationship, Goro is the only character who is portrayed as Akira’s equal. Their contests are all in the name of improving not just Goro, but Akira too. Goro is the only character who expresses an interest in Akira’s inner life and development, and as such he knows Akira better than anyone else. So when Maruki tries to trap them all in a gilded birdcage, Goro won’t stand for it and he knows Akira won’t stand for it either. That’s why he’s so betrayed if you choose to accept the dreamworld. You’re negating the basis of your entire relationship with him and going against your own principles. Out of every character in the game, the one who knows Akira best and refuses to abandon him even when that could mean his own death is Goro Akechi.
I want to reiterate: I do not hate or even dislike the PT!! And tbh I don’t really think they “abandoned” Akira. That post, imo, is supposed to be kind of hyperbolic. Unless it’s referring to how many of them literally sprint away when he comes to talk to them lol. I look at it more like a commentary on how thoughtlessly the PT act as soon as their wishes are granted. I know it’s set up linearly for story purposes, but isn’t it kind of sad how no one checks up on Akira in the week he’s going around talking to people? Especially after he’s been acting so comparatively weird? It’s not unusual that they might be caught up in other stuff, but while you’re going around and visiting everyone, you don’t get a single text or call from ANY of the thieves, for a whole week!! Goro even comments on it directly with his pointed little “I’m sure you’re just as close as you were before” comment. God, he’s such a bitch. Ultimately, the PT do get their acts together, and it’s partially out of the realization that Akira is struggling alone against something and needs their help, which I love and appreciate. I think they are good friends who want to support Akira, but they can’t understand him past the role they’ve placed him in, and until they do, they’ll never be able to be what he needs. Akira loves his friends and knows he can rely on them in most ways, but those relationships will always be dogged by the pervasive fear that he must constantly earn the right to have the relationship at all. What he needs MOST is someone he doesn’t have to perform for, and from what we see in the game, none of the thieves fit that bill. Except Goro.
I know this was long and rambly and probably pretty disjointed but I wanted to be as thorough as possible and all of my thoughts just sort of gushed out. Obviously ymmv about all of this depending on how you interpret the game, but this is what I arrived at thanks to my analysis so this is what I have for you! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

shuake and/or pegoryu for the ship thing uwuwu
001: Shuake/Akeshu
when I started shipping it if I did:
Honestly? Right from the get-go. I saw Goro at the TV station and when he opposed the Phantom Thieves but immediately took an interest in Akiren, and Akiren reciprocated that interest and there was no outward negativity expressed (by either Akiren or Morgana) towards their relationship, it was basically greenlit in my head. This was back in vanilla -- but the rest of the game, AND Royal, definitely just made it go stronger. The main reason was the fact that they could intellectually stimulate and interest the other with no ill will or malice, and that they both seemed to enjoy it.
my thoughts:
First of all, there’s the entire rivalry thing which I LOVE.
The whole concept of healthy rivalries always appeal in a relationship dynamic to me, because 1) they don’t “bore” each other due to the fact that there’s always going to be something keeping their interest up in a competitive way, 2) there’s no power imbalance due to the fact that the basis of any rivalry is that they are equals, and 3) both people in the relationship will always be striving to become better not for the other person, but because of the other person. Look at it this way:
There’s “I want to be the best version of myself to make you happy,” which is pretty much any other relationship dynamic that enforces self-betterment.
THEN, there’s rivalmance, which is, “I want to be the best version of myself because you motivate me to want to become a better person for myself,” which just honestly strikes a chord with me, mainly because it means that the relationship isn’t about pandering to one another, but about two people who can go up head-to-head, bare their souls and give each other everything they’ve got, and still come out stronger and happier than when they went in.
It’s exactly this in shuake that appeals to me so much -- that, of course, and the fact that they genuinely care about the other for who the other is, and not for anyone else. It’s especially blatant when you think about the fact that they both mirror each other in so many ways -- they both put on so many masks for the public and everyone around them; they’re both wildcards; they’re designed to mirror the other -- anyway, that list goes on for days.
The fact of the matter is that they can honestly, truly understand each other. There’s a saying -- “it is when dressed for a masquerade where you are most naked” -- that I think fits them really well. Their whole confidant route explores the many layers to their relationship and how they can fully understand the true depth of what the other means by using the guise of casual conversation as metaphor for the truth. Which you’ll know I obsess over if you’ve seen my post on their third confidant rank in Royal or small potatoes.
Oooops, that got a little long...
And of course, to no one’s surprise.
What makes me happy about them:
can’t i just say “everything” and be done with it
Okay but in all seriousness, I absolutely love how they’ve found someone so special for themselves in each other. Their relationship is so valuable to them, so important and meaningful that it’s truly something I think is precious. And that’s not even taking into account how much they would consider doing (and sacrificing) for the other if need be. Hell, Goro entrusts Akiren with his life mission (taking down Shido to let him rot) before intending to give up his own life in the engine room, and Akiren is given the absolutely heartrending choice to choose between Akechi or the world. The fact that it’s such a hard choice to make in and of itself is testament to how much it means. The fact that 2/2 exists is testament. The fact that Goro’s third awakening takes place at Leblanc, with Akiren, every little detail. They just. they mean so much to each other and that’s honestly one of the things that really makes me happy.
What makes me sad about them:
Nothing in particular about their relationship saddens me, per se? Like, they truly make me and each other happy by virtue of just being there. That’s not to say that their circumstances aren’t impressively saddening -- just take Proof of Justice, for example. The only thing that saddens me about their relationship is the tragedy of their circumstances: “If only we had met a few years earlier”? That hit. Well written angst is the best variant.
things done in fanfic that annoys me:
When. Akiren. is. mean-spirited. to. Goro. or. vice. versa. It’s just...not them? Like, Akiren knows what Goro’s been through, and seeing people write him making fun of Goro with the Phantom Thieves as anything further than light/playful teasing just makes me wince because it’s... cruel. Similarly, Goro’s a prick, yeah, but he’d never really go so far as to be needlessly cruel to Akiren and enjoy it for the sake of it. It’s just...blegh. I don’t like it.
things I look for in fanfic:
DYNAMIC! If any fic really nails their dynamic I absolutely adore it. The edge of competition, the proud and encouraging taunts, the innate bond and trust? Gimme that sweet sweet RIVALMANCE. The “do I hate you or do I hate what how you make me feel?” The “I want to get my feelings across but saying them would make it real and make it matter, so I’m going to layer it within thousands of metaphors and hypotheticals that I know you’ll understand regardless, but as long as I don’t let myself falter with my goal, it’s fine”
Ahem.
Basically I like them pining/trying to one-up each other and just generally relishing being in the other’s presence.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
GOD this is a hard one because I don’t really ship either of them with anyone else? I know for Goro there’s been a lot of akesumi stuff going around but that really isn’t my cup of tea, so for Goro I’d prooooobably go with Yusuke because akekita is cute, lol. I will say that I headcanon Akiren as massively bi and I’d be willing to settle for shuann but I don’t really see them romantically? Like, bi solidarity and that’s all? OH though I wouldn’t mind Akiren with Hifumi; that’s a cute ship too!
My happily ever after for them:
They’re happy as long as they’re together, in my heart. Given both of their characters I think they both do like the fast-paced life that keeps them stimulated, but they can only properly slow down when they’re with each other, just because of how well they truly understand each other and knows what the other needs. Their happily ever after is honestly just them being together, because home is where the heart is.
who is the big spoon/little spoon:
Real talk, they snuggle together and both kind spoon each other? Other than that they alternate between big and little spoon, depending on whose trauma is affecting them. Akiren claims to be the big spoon more often because he likes believing that he’s able to comfort Goro when confronted in his darker moments and be there to protect him and assure him that things aren’t gonna hurt him anymore, but Goro ends up being the big spoon a lot more frequently because Akiren takes up too many people’s problems and gets stressed out over them without dealing with his own issues first, so Akiren frequently needs to be reminded that he has someone to protect him too, and Goro’s more than glad to be able to fill that role, to be able to help heal instead of hurt.
what is their favorite non-sexual activity:
Anything, so long as it’s competitive! As long as they can aim to compete with the other or one-up the other, it’ll be absolutely engaging for the both of them, whether it’s a debate, a game of chess, battleships, darts, pool, baseball batting in Yongen-Jaya, or playing tennis. Just let them compete and get passionate about it, and they’ll both have the time of their lives. Seriously.
Ask post here!
(I’ll do pegoryu next for you, anon, in a separate post!)

i’ve been thinking about like. the crushing emotional intimacy of That Image from the end of the p5r opening. the one where akiren’s gently tilting his head towards akechi while they’ve both got their eyes closed with their foreheads just almost touching. and how fucking gay it is
what really kills me is how the camera focuses on akiren and just how happy he is to be fucking shit up with a baseball bat. because the thing about akiren is that he loves being a phantom thief/vigilante, which means that some part of him likes breaking society’s laws, and you’re not supposed to like breaking the law.
the thing about being a vigilante is that vigilantes are primarily moral because they can claim they’re taking the law into their own hands in order to uphold the law. batman, for example, breaks the law so that he can put people in jail. (a lot of akiren’s defense of the phantom thieves when he’s talking to goro on the TV show speaks to just the general idea that even if the phantom thieves aren’t just, they’re necessary, because the police isn’t doing jack shit.) this is how you tell the difference between a shitty punk who gets off on beating people up, and a so-called “noble” vigilante.
so most of the justification for being a phantom thief kind of comes from the standpoint of “well it’s not like i want to break the law and/or take the law into my own hands. it’s not about me liking this power trip. it’s just that someone’s got to uphold justice, so i guess i’ll do the dirty work.”
this is especially so for akiren, for a kid who’s on probation and is supposed be on his best behavior, him flirting with prison by being a phantom thief is really only justifiable on the grounds that he has no other choice. and for akiren, who spends time defending the morality of his actions to the greater public and also specifically to akechi (who goes out of his way to accuse the phantom thieves of amorality), akiren’s best defense of his actions is to claim that it’s not that he likes breaking the law, he just has to.
except we know this isn’t true. akiren loves being a phantom thief. you can’t fake passion like what he’s got in the metaverse. half the fun of persona 5 is just watching how much akiren is feeling himself.
like. i know, i know, he’s a blank slate, he’s a player insert character, silent protagonist, except that’s patent bullshit. the guy’s soul is shaped like arsene. he has a sense of humor, and most of the time it’s varying degrees of DND Vicious Mockery. akiren keeps his shit to himself when he’s in the real world, and then the instant he’s in the metaverse, it’s backflips, coat-tail flipping, dramatic posing with his fancy gloves, knife-twirling, and a really unnecessary amount of smirking. dont even get me started on his VA lines and how fucking smug he sounds, all the time, constantly.
akiren is absolutely doing phantom thief work because he believes in the reformation of society. but he is absolutely ALSO doing phantom thief work because he just........... likes doing it.
(also worth noting that he likes doing it specifically because he got fucked over personally by shido. some people reform all of japan to cope.)
now going back to the part about akechi--akechi in particular goes out of his way to accuse the phantom thieves of being the “other” kind of vigilante, the kind of “vigilante” who has no noble cause behind their actions and really just enjoys bullying others. the best way to argue that that’s not true is by arguing that there is a noble cause: “i’m not doing it because i get off on a power trip. i’m doing it because i’m upholding Justice.”
this, in turn, brings up a really cool dynamic in which Akiren And Akechi Talking About Unemotional Justice When Really They’re Talking About Emotional Emotions. to defend the legitimacy of the phantom thieves, akiren has to defend the PT on the grounds of an impartial, impersonal, unemotional topic, such as “i believe that the phantom thieves are doing Justice with a Capital J” (i think his literal line is “the phantom thieves are justice itself”). if akiren sounds like he’s too emotionally invested, if he sounds like he’s enjoying himself too much, he’s suspect of being the “other” kind of vigilante, the shitty kid who just likes bullying people. so he’s got to claim it’s for Justice.
that might be true, but it’s not the full story. the full story is that part of akiren likes justice as much as he likes being a phantom thief, just as much as he likes being dramatic and extra and unnecessarily flashy, and just as much as he loves beating up shitty abusive men like the guy who fucked his life up.
(and for akechi’s part, yes, he too believes in Justice with a Capital J, but of course we also know that much of his conceptualization of justice is partly because he too wants closure for the wrongs that’ve been done to him, and also he’s a slut for people’s acceptance, etc, etc.)
all of this is to say that the irony of akiren’s and goro’s relationship is that as much as they talk about morality, justice, and the law, what they’re really talking about is what they need emotionally. when they’re talking about Objective Justice With A Capital J, it comes from a place of subjectivity: “i personally was wronged in this way.”
so for akiren in the p5r opening to openly be so delighted to beat the shit out of a miniature version of tokyo and look so happy doing it, right in front of akechi??? it makes me hope that maybe they can put down a lot of the morality/ethics jargon they were using to talk about their feelings. even considering that the p5r opening isn’t a concrete event that’s literally happening (since it’s just a metaphorical montage that speaks to the storyline’s themes, like an anime opening), just that image of akiren openly smiling after beating the shit out of minitokyo in front of one his biggest critics is........... a lot.
it’s more or less admitting, hey, maybe i’m not a paragon of justice, and i don’t have to be, because i’m a human being too with an emotional stake in things. and i’m not even going to pretend otherwise in front of you.
tl;dr it’s GAY

Ren vs. the other thieves...
So, I noticed that the previous asks would show the thieves as either brainwashed or mere cognitive versions of themselves.
I kinda wish for the same thing.
So I’m here to hash some things on that idea for it to be pliable in canon lol.
Also it’s fine to dismiss the idea, that’s fandom for ya, just want to get my idea out there lolololololol.
(Hey! I didn’t even notice I got a submission, so sorry about that! But also no no, that’s totally fine! I’m just a huge stickler for characterization and always felt bad for pointing out inconsistencies, but my brain won’t let me not. ^^; Again, the idea itself is a GREAT and one with super interesting implications-- I just want to stay true to the PT’s development and loyalty to Joker. Anyway, hope you don’t mind I popped it behind a readmore! It’s a very solid, fleshed out idea, but I try not to clog anyone’s dash too badly xD Added my thoughts as well!)
———
So before the Cendrillon fight, before Maruki even reveals himself with Kasumi in that auditorium, Cognitive versions of the Phantom Thieves appear.
Either Ren fights this one alone or Ren and Goro fights together… lol (Both aren’t aware that they are cognitive versions)
So yeah, the first pair Ren fights would be Ryuji and Ann.
Ryuji would be using Captain Kidd
Anne would be using Carmen
The next pair would be Yusuke and Morgana
Yusuke would be using Goemon.
Morgana would be using Zorro.
The next pair would be Makoto and Haru
Makoto would be using Johanna
Haru would be using Milady.
Cognitive Futaba however would be changing the combatants from time to time, so yes the whole thieves fight would be one encounter.
To defeat the thieves fight would be so throw Bless or Curse spell at Cognitive Futaba however she heals at every turn so the only way to defeat her would be using Hamaon or Mudoon.
Here some quotes from the Cognitive Thieves.
Ryuji: Dude! I can finally pay my mom back, you’d discard that from me? For real?
Ann: Shiho wouldn’t have committed that act! Kamoshida wouldn’t have done those things?!
Morgana: I’m an actual human, my most inherent wish came true.
Yusuke: Sensei completely guides me and I would like to repay him the favor.
Makoto: My father, my sister, Joker, we’re happy family…
Futaba: My mom is here. How could you?!
Haru: My father… I want my father back.
Then Akechi’s all like
Are you sure these are your supposed friends? They’ve completely bought his crap!
Ren defeats the Cognitive thieves. Kasumi and Maruki are lifted up to the scene. The girl’s is sitting and the whole Cendrillon fight happens, even to the point where the real thieves show up.
(Okay YES THIS I CAN GET BEHIND! Like I said before, I just cannot see the PT willingly (even when caught up in Maruki’s dream) fighting against Joker cause it’s been established by canon that none of them are so far gone that they’d cling to their dreams at the cost of Akiren, but I love the idea that Joker could fight cognitive versions of them that he doesn’t know are cognitive. Futaba switching them out at low health would also mean that they never dissolve and thus Joker would believe them to be real until the end of the fight and Akechi makes his comment... which maybe would shock Joker into being like, oh, oh wait, they wouldn’t, allowing him to unleash his full power and dissolve their cognitive versions.
I also feel like it’d be cool if Joker was mechanically unable to actually deplete their health even without Futaba’s interference. Like his attacks will not deal a killing blow and Futaba switches them out when when they reach 1hp or Joker “can’t move” if he’s at a point where he can take them out... I just really like the idea of Joker holding himself back cause he loves his friends... :’))
———
The next set would be fighting the thieves’ Persona during the Adam Kadmon fight.
It is my inherent belief that Adam Kadmon can actualize anyone’s Persona granted that they’re connected to his tentacles and are unconscious like how Cendrillon was actualized when Kasumi was taken by the tentacles and was shocked unconscious.
The tentacles would actually latch unto AkiRen but the other thieves, sans Kasumire and Goro, would take the attack instead so they’re the ones captured.
The fight goes like like normal, Akiren and the Party members fight Adam Kadmon, but he does take damage. ¼ into his health bar. He grabs but the thieves take the attack instead.
Once the tentacles have completely captured one of the thieves, Adam Kadmon heals slightly and the thief’s Persona appears, the initial Persona.
To beat the Persona summoned by Adam Kadmon, normal battle tactics apply. They have very low HP compared to when they were summoned by their owners.
Another Party member replaces the captured member in the party. Say Ann is captured when she was with Ryuji and Morgana, Yusuke takes her place in the party.
This goes on until the party only consists of Kasumi and Akechi.
After the defeat of the captured thief’s Persona, the tentacles let go of them and Futaba takes them inside her Persona before going back offscreen and releases them there.
The phantom thief who had been already captured and released, won’t be put in the active party anymore.
When the only party members left are Akechi and Kasumire, the whole scripted fight happens, with Adam Kadmon charging and attacking the ground with his fists.
Then endgame lol.
Hope that was very concise and easily understandable XD
(Once again, a really really solid scenario! Having the Thieves each taking hits for Joker only for them to be knocked unconscious and used against him is a reaaaally good idea, especially cause it forces you to cycle through your whole party in a plot heavy way. If I may make a suggestion though, I think this would make more sense during the Azathoth section of the fight, over the Adam Kadmon section? That way the Thieves could recuperate in time for the Adam Kadmon portion (and to, ahem, catch that hand xD) and Maruki could even have his unique dialogue play for each Thief as he captures them and before knocking them unconscious to use their Personas. Then you could actually see all his party member specific dialogue from the Azathoth section [something I REALLY wished was scripted to force you to swap members to hear all of it]. It’d also make that section of the fight a lot more interesting... as cool of a villain I think Maruki is, his fight was sorta lackluster to me, especially when compared to Yaldabaoth.
Anyway though, thanks for taking the time to type all this out! It’s totally something I’m dying for now and actually think it would’ve improved both fights a lot! I’m such a sucker for “forced to fight your friends” and you managed to make everything fit well with canon AND be heart wrenchingly painful, haha.)

basic information
i only play over email. discord’s fine and dandy for ooc chatter and plotting, but i won’t write over it. please include your handle if you’d like to talk over it!
i only ask for a couple replies a week. the way work’s going right now my free time is pretty limited. i can’t keep up with rapid-fire replies and have no desire to.
i ask for decent-sized replies, at least ~2 paragraphs per character. Longer replies are loved but not required. Anything less than 2 paragraphs and I lose interest.
i default to third person past tense, though i can write in present if that’s your preference. i refuse to write in first person, and will not write with someone who writes first person. sorry.
i only write with people 18+ since i am well over 18. no exceptions.
i’m open to any and all pairing dynamics – m/f, f//, m//, nb, trans, etc. i also want to point out that i don’t subscribe to the idea that certain characters have to be tops or bottoms. i like playing switches who, i’m sure, have preferences as to ‘topping’ or 'bottoming’ but i have no desire to play with someone who only 'bottoms’ or 'tops’.
i’m very doubling friendly, though i’ll go into more detail for the fandoms in question below.
i enjoy writing smut, it’s true. i don’t fade to black. if you’d like to write something smut-heavy or smut-oriented, i’m fine with that, but please let me know.
please, please please send me a message with information – your limits, your expectations, which fandom/characters/pairings you want to play. any messages asking me to write something i haven’t mentioned here or with zero information will be deleted.
characters in bold are ones i want to play! any characters underage will be aged up. fire emblem: three houses i’ve played through all the routes except for silver snow, including the ashen wolves dlc.
dimitri/f!byleth
sylvain/felix
hubert/ferdinand (i’m more inclined to ferdinand but i’ll write either)
claude/m!byleth
claude/linhardt
miklan/glenn
lambert/rodrigue (i’ve not played this one but i’m intrigued)
i’m potentially open to other canon/canon pairs, but please don’t be offended if i turn down what you offer. please also note i have no desire to include ocs in this universe. aus are also very much on the table – modern day, canon-divergence, a/b/o, etc. mystic messenger i’ve played through everyone’s route and most of the dlc, rika’s back-story excluded. i have zero interest in including rika as a main character or as a character in a pairing.
jumin/f!oc
v/f!oc/saeran
i’m happy to double as literally anyone else but rika – saeyoung, vanderwood, jaehee, zen, yoosung. poly is, obviously, on the table. i don’t want to use the 'mc’, but i would like to keep things in universe. not something mandatory, but i tend to lean towards gay relationships for yoosung and jaehee, but it is something we can discuss. persona 5 royal i’ve played through the vanilla persona 5 and royal both.
akiren/akechi
maruki/akiren
maruki/akiren/akechi
akira/oc
yusuke/oc
akechi/oc
i’m willing to double here for the canon/oc pairs, but if you’re wanting to write an oc please be aware i will not write futaba, yusuke, or akechi for them. you’re welcome to ask about other canon/canon pairs, but i make no guarantee i’ll write them. i’m very open to aus here, but in-universe ones only please. shujin academy goro? yes please. akiren being trained in the metaverse by goro instead of morgana? yes. dark!akiren joining forces with goro? hell yes. i also have an idea for a goro who was found by wakaba before he got to shido which also involves maruki if anyone’s interested in that! i’m also willing to discuss original rps (i’m open to just about anything if spun enticingly), though i’ll be honest – i’d probably want something fairly smutty for original lines. if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask! otherwise, i hope to hear from some of you soon! you’ll find my email below.
