Alaskan Shifter Romance
Tumblr media
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person who is raised in Alaska must eventually develop either a deep soft spot or deep hatred for Alaskana in all its forms. I was raised in Alaska and I'm literally writing a blog post about how much I adore these Alaska-themed paranormal shifter romances, so you do the math on that one while I talk the Alaskan Totem Shifters books.
There are probably spoilers below the break, so just a heads up!
For those of you who follow this blog pretty closely, this series is set in the same universe as the Gladiator Shifter books, but without the gladiatorial backstory and localized to small-town Alaska. The vibes are on point, which is only to be expected since Murphy Lawless lived in Alaska for a while. (True Story: I once ran into her at a Barnes and Noble on a random day when I was buying Urban Shama, and she was absolutely lovely and signed my book. I was a speechless mess.) These books scratched an itch for home that pops up for me every once in a while; there really and truly is nowhere quite like Alaska on this earth.
Raven Heart follows Elena Peratrovitch as she works with her community, the government, and a bunch of billionaires to maintain conservation of the land versus exploitation and developement. This is somewhat complicated by small town dynamics, Alaska small town dynamics, and Richard freaking Yale, billionare Raven Shifter. Elena and Richard are basically fated mates, although I actually don't think the book uses that term.
Beyond the romance and the Alaska small-town vibes, the book also has a legitimately interesting contrast between Richard and his fellow shifter (albeit grizzly bear, not raven) and billionaire developer Derek Crown. Richard is all about sustainable, conservationist development, whereas Crown is all "drill, baby, drill" up in here, and he is very much not above kidnapping and murdering the opposition to get it done.
I was not expecting a shifter battle at the end of the book, but I was absolutely not mad about it either.
Overall, Raven Heart's 2016 publication date (four years before Gladiator Bear and a whopping seven years before Polar Heart) means that it doesn't slot terribly neatly into the shifterverse that Lawless would develop later, but it's not so far off from it that it's not clearly related, and Polar Heart is a really excellent bridge between the Gladiator Shifters and Raven Heart, so everything has a nice continuity and shared shifterverse.
Polar Heart follows Davinda Jackson (Elena's college bestie) and Isiah Moses during Shkalnik's mayoral election. Davinda is a wildlife photographer, which fully endears her to the shifter community when she offers to do portraits of them AND their shifted forms in what is one of the sweetest, most community-driven scenes I have ever read in any book ever, end of sentence. Where Elena and Richard felt very isolated, Davinda and Isiah are deeply embedded in the shifter and Shkalnik communities in a way that felt so Alaska. So honestly, this book is cozy in a way that Raven Heart wasn't, and actually manages to have a cozier community focus than the Gladiator Shifter books, which are all about the shifter worlds and communities.
On top of that, if Garius Beren (of Gladiator Bear fame) was the most bear a person could be, Isaiah is EVEN MORE BEAR. He is literally a giant polar teddy bear of a man, and his house also looks like a polar bear, which is just adorable. It even has EARS.
In addition to the sheer cozy adorableness, this book ends on just THE most epic takedown of a literal Outsider Karen politician who is trying to expose shifters to the world. This takedown is epic, utterly gratifying, and quite frankly the best thing I've read in a WHILE.
Overall, I very much hope we see more entries in the Alaska Totem Shifters series because both these books have been incredible in their own ways, and I would happily read more.

My local library has been closed for renovations since may. This was bad but survivable in the summertime when there was, you know, light and a dozen different things to do.
It's November. The sun has abandoned us. I need to go browse the stacks and pick up a door stopper that hasn't been touched since the Bush administration and smells like dust. Mental health is stored in the Alaskana section between the yupik cookbook that includes recipes for seal oil and a firsthand account of a dude getting mauled by a polar bear. Not a lot of mental health, but that's where we put it. Cabin fever is real and it is treated by doing the exact opposite of what you would need for a normal fever.

What if Alaska Airlines operated the British Aerospace BAe-146 as a combi aircraft in the State of Alaska? I've always been intrigued why this wasn't a thing given the BAe-146's field performance. Only one operator used the 146 in Alaska, that was AirPac, and they only used a single example and even though it was a full passenger version, there were collapsible cargo containers in the forward cabin for freight. Alaska opted for the Boeing 737-200C in the role that I have portrayed here in my alternate history illustration of an Alaska Airlines BAe-146-200QC.⁣ ⁣ Swipe left to see an image of the BAe-146QC demonstrator from "Fighting to be Heard: How the British Aerospace BAe-146 Started the Regional Jet Revolution" by Brian Wiklem. ⁣ ⁣ Through four different liveries at Alaska Airlines, Chester the Eskimo has adorned the tails of all three Alaska Airlines liveries from the 1970s to today. When the second livery debuted in the 1990s, a tweak was made to Chester- the 1970s Alaskana Icon tails and 1980s liveries featured a stern visage but Chester is now smiling in the current new livery and the previous livery.⁣ ⁣ It’s said that the Eskimo is modeled after Chester Sevek, a reindeer herder who kept Alaska Native dance traditions alive with performances for deplaning Alaska passengers in Kotzebue, Alaska- and that's how the tail logo got to be called Chester.⁣ ⁣ Be sure to check us out at www.lajeteepress.com. We're out to change the paradigm in aviation books with our publishing mission. Hitchcock, B. (2016). The Smell of Other People's Houses. Wendy Lamb Books.
From the perspectives of multiple teens who are growing up in 1970’s Alaska, The Smell of Other People’s Houses is a showcase of diverse experiences in coming of age. With a focus on the things we remember and the things that matter, this book dives into issues ranging from the transition to statehood in Alaska to how these boys and girls find their place in the world from varying backgrounds and ethnicities.
I was not prepared for how impactful this book was going to be. From the first chapter onwards, Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock manages to write memories in a way that made me feel as if they were my own. From the focus on the smells of people & their houses to the small details that we remember years after an event, she captures melancholic nostalgia in a way that had me clutching my tissues and praying for a happy ending. There was a strong theme of diversity which spoke to the relationships between native Alaskans, the wealth disparity and what life looked like on both ends of that spectrum, and how the Alaska gaining statehood had upended the lives of many.

Using Alaska wormwood as wands. Artemisia alaskana has been used medicinally for thousands of years. It has many uses, commonly used in steam baths for respiratory aid and muscle/body pain. 🌱

I stole a ‘50 questions’ meme from @esotheria-sims! I needed an excuse to do something different with myself.
The sim in question is a remake of an old character, Alaskana, who I made for sims 3 awhile ago. Thought I would try another game, another method of revisiting him.
As a note, Alaskana isn’t really a sim - I don’t plan on playing him as such, though I might do it for funsies. This recreation isn’t entirely correct - the hair color is right, but it’s the wrong style, as his hair is shorter than this.
01. How old is your sim? Somewhere between the age of 70 - 120 depending on what stage of development we’re referring to.
02. When is your sim’s birthday? -shrug- Summer
03. What is your sim’s zodiac sign? Cancer.
04. What is your sim’s ethnicity? Al isn’t human, but his ethnicity is - he grew up in a small town that served as a trading gateway between other larger cities. Most of the town’s income was made from travelers briefly using the amenities it provided, or other outsiders. Essentially, a tourism destination. The town is named Pell.
05. Does your sim have any nicknames? I call him ‘Al’, but he’s the type to not be very receptive of nicknames. They make him very uncomfortable because they’re meant to be casual, and he does not do casual well.
06. Do they have a job? He’s a famous doctor.
07. Where does your sim live? In a much larger port city, also known for it’s trade. It doesn’t have a name, RIP me
08. Who does your sim live with? Himself and his adopted ‘daughter’.
09. What environment did your sim grow up in? (strict, loving, cold etc.) I’d say Cold, I guess, but it’s complicated. Pell was/is a racist city - and he was subjected to many/multiple surgeries to alter his appearance at an age he was much to young to consent to and faces chronic pain as a result. This was ‘for his own benefit’ as his more obvious (now removed) features would have put him at less controllable risk. He spent most of his early life as a servant with an ever-changing name for simplicity’s sake. His adoptive dad tho is the nicest, most self-sacrificing guy you’d ever meet, and the man lost his status as a member of a noble house by his insistence on keeping the ‘pet’, essentially losing everything and going to great lengths to make sure he was doing it ‘right’. As Al’s dad was a teacher, Al ended up highly educated himself and was given regular tutoring on pretty much everything. However, he was shortsighted and quite simply wrong to do what he did, and that confusion messed extensively with Al’s ability to determine people’s true alignment, as well as Al’s tendency to be self-secluding.
10. What is your sim’s favourite food? Meat! He raises rabbits, actually, to eat of course. It’s partially because his own race is somewhere between carnivorous/scavenger, and he’s not able to digest anything that’s not meat properly enough to satisfy him well.
11. What is your sim’s favourite drink? Probably coffee actually.
12. If they have one what is your sim’s favourite color? Red. Red! He’s more into patterns than colors tho.
13. Does your sim believe in any clichés? (love at first sight etc.) He thinks cliches are stupid.
14. What is your sim’s sexuality? Bisexual.
15. What is your sim’s gender identity? Male.
16. Is your sim type a or type b? Type C, actually.
17. Is your sim introverted or extroverted? Introverted.
18. What is your sim’s favourite woohoo position? hahaha what
19. Is your sim a pet person? If so what is their favourite animal? Animals are easier to relate to than people, but I never imagine him as actually having pets aside from his rabbits (which he dotes on despite also eating them). They’re too ‘frivolous’ for him.
20. Does your sim have a best friend? No, tho he’s familiar with people from the social units he attends.
21. What is/was your sim’s favourite school subject? Weird Science. The weirder / more mysterious / less grounded it is, the more he likes it. He’d think that theoretical physics are amazing. He tends to spout crazy-sounding theories about things regularly because they’re cool to him.
22. Is/was your sim a high, mid or low achiever in school? High achiever. He’ll still visit museums and the like so he’s not left behind about the latest buzz and he enjoys that a lot.
23. Are they planning to go or have they already been to college? Nope
24. What are your sim’s political beliefs? He’s an isolationist.
25. What is one thing your sim wants to do before they die? He’d like to visit the regions where his race lives - it’s something he has little to no knowledge about.
26. Does your sim have a favourite TV show (cable) and/or movie? hah
27. Is your sim a Netflix viewer? If so what are their top 3 shows. hah
28. Does your sim like books? Yes. He collects them. All sorts of books. Helps one remember things they’d otherwise forget.
29. Does your sim enjoy video games, if so what is their favourite one and do they play on PC or console? Video game? No. Game? Yes. He likes to play silly games with his rabbits. I guess he’d also like quieter games like chess.
30. What is your sim’s personal style? Al dresses very.. stylish. He’ll choose very ‘loud’ outfits. It’s one of his odder personality traits, and it’s the result his obsession over his appearance rather than a conscious decision to stand out.
31. Does your sim have a lucky charm? Nope.
32. Is your sim religious? He has a sense of religion, but calling him religious is a stretch.
33. What kind of music does your sim listen to and who is their favourite artist? He likes music, as long as it’s not vulgar. He will not dance to it and music that makes him want to dance also makes him angry.
34. Is your sim a festive person? If so what’s their favourite holiday? He’s not a festive person, but will quietly appreaciate holidays as they pass, even if it’s a holiday he doesn’t care for.
35. What is your sim’s favourite type of weather? Cold, or Rainy, but ideally both. It’s an excuse to wear a (probably garish) coat, which he enjoys.
36. Does your sim prefer to start fights or finish them? FIGHTS BAD. But if he must, he’d prefer to start it. Losing fights makes you more memorable.
37. Does your sim have a dream job? Not really.
38. Does your sim have any siblings? He has siblings, but he doesn’t know he has siblings.
39. Does your sim get along with their family? His family is dead and gone, has been for a very long time.
40. What is your sim’s favourite hobby? Accomplishing Things.
41. What does your sim look for in a romantic partner? He's aromantic.
42. What is a secret about your sim? He has a lot of secrets. I guess one of them is that he doesn’t have ‘fingers’ - he’s got claws instead.
43. What is a wish your sim has? He wishes he could get comfortable in a place without having to leave behind everything.
44. What is a flaw your sim has? “People Bad”
45. How do others generally perceive your sim? He’s a weirdo and there’s something strange about him, but at least he’s nice. You can go to him if you need help or have a question. It’s hard to tell if he likes you or not, but don’t let it get to you.
46. Does your sim have a greatest achievement? He helped fend off a plague that hit the city by providing medicine and healing to the sick. He hates the attention this gave him in the end, but he doesn’t regret it, and it makes him feel useful for once.
47. If they have one, what is your sim’s greatest regret? Leaving behind Pell, which he still considers home.
48. Does your sim have a favourite emoji? :)
49. Does your sim use simstagram? God no
50. What is the last text your sim sent (and who did they text)? "Text? You mean as in... letters?” Probably something business related.

Alaskana recipe: Halibut Olympia a little better than you remember
Alaskana recipe: Halibut Olympia a little better than you remember
[ad_1]
Tracking the DNA of the classic Alaska baked fish dish, halibut Olympia, took me down some cool rabbit holes related to the advent of power generation in Alaska (beginning the in the late 19th century), the history of jarred mayonnaise (Best Foods/Hellmann’s was in wide circulation by the late 1920s) and the spread of refrigeration into rural areas in the United States (most got it after…

Alaskana
Brooding ⚫ Loner  ⚫ Good  ⚫ Perfectionist  ⚫ Never Nude
Alaskana was raised as human, by humans - but he’s not. He’s been subjected to more body-altering surgeries than he can remember in an attempt to hide what he truly is, and was raised as a servant in an attempt to give him an alibi for his existence. He was told as a child, that this was all for his own good - and that the world outside would be very, very, scary if anyone were to find out what he was. It made sense.
His father was a tutor, catering mostly to richer families, and it was Alaskana’s job to welcome people into the home, and cater to whatever their needs might be. Alaskana posed as his son (not necessarilly wrong), and people came and went too quickly to notice that Alaskana wasn’t growing.  The benefits of this, is that he got comfortable with the idea that he wasn’t himself, and he got access to much more knowledge than even his father’s many students, by reading books alone at night or eavesdropping on lessons.
When his father eventually died an old man, Alaskana was transferred to a family friend who happened to be a physican - and the same one responsible for all of his surgeries. He also discovered, thru this man, that his own father was the disgraced son of a lord, and he had disgraced himself  by ‘adopting a pet’ - who was, you guessed it, Alaskana.
The man treated him as a servant as well - and subjected him to harder work and labor than he was accustomed to for many years, until the man died too. With no where else to go, Alaskana gathered what little he did own, and left his hometown to live in the biggest city he knew, hoping to blend in. Alaskana ended up caught up in a plague, and nearly died healing the sick; as a result, he gained a lot of wealth and a lot of fame. Most of the money was quickly donated, in the hopes of helping him slip into obscurity again.
Some other facts -
His teeth are badly damaged, so he never smiles in a way that shows them, and he never laughs beyond a short giggle.
His diet consists of soaked bread, and whatever meat happens to me the easiest to access. Anything else will probably make him very sick.
He has chronic pain. Everywhere.
He has a habit of dressing very fashionably and flashy, which draws attention to himself that he’s then uncomfortable with. He can’t manage to not dress this way, even when he tries to tone it down.
