The Abby hate in the show is unfortunately going to be worse because Pedro Pascal has a cult-like following. As much as I love him, I can’t stand some of his obsessive stans.
Like, I know it’s going to be bad because I’ve seen some of them hate on Maria this season for raising her (incredibly valid) concerns. Like, we all love Joel, but he ain’t a good guy and considering all she’s been told of course she’d be standoffish and Pedro stans couldn’t see from her perspective how much of a red flag he could be so they started hating on her.
And that’s Maria who is probably the most sane and least controversial character from the game so god knows what the Abby hate is going to be like after the golf scene because his fans are going to join the stans from the game who can’t get past it, only worse. My big hope is that in the show they tell the story chronologically so we see her story before she kills him, might soften some others up
I'm preparing to go to WAR for the actress who's gonna play Abby bc at the end of the day Abby isn't real, it's the actress who's gonna play her that I'm scared about especially after what Laura Bailey went through,
I know it's not Pedro's responsibility but I hope he protects her just like he does with Bella.
Honestly people who see the actors as the characters are the weakest link bc wtf.
Idk how they're gonna do it in the show, all I know is that I'll go to war for both Abby and the actress (Shannon I'm looking at you) that's gonna play her. Also the hate is gonna be double since toxic fans from the game will have to watch it in live action plus MANY people who never played the game before and just watched the show, it's gonna be a mess.

I feel like most of the people who highly criticise tlovm should present a plan on how they would adapt it better. especially with vex's story, i don't understand why people seem to imply cr somehow suddenly became misogynistic and that they're "rewriting her story for the sake of vax's". it's so easy to be a hater and do bad faith readings but honestly if there ever was an adaptation where you can safely assume the original authors are satisfied, it is tlovm just based on the degree of their involvement alone. and supposedly who is to blame for that? is everyone against Laura? did Laura supposedly misunderstand her own character's story?

So like...I feel you, but, to be fair, I stand by people's right to dislike a story without knowing how to fix it! I like to try and piece together how I'd do it differently because that's fun for me but it's always completely valid to say "I don't vibe"; it's just that it is worth exploring why you don't vibe. Sometimes it's not anything deep and revealing about you, but sometimes it is, and you'll never know which it is unless you take a look. I also, as always, will defend 1. being a hater and 2. saying "I recognize the cast is having fun and likes it but I'm not a fan." Those are extremely valid feelings to have!
With that said, you are correct that there is this weird attitude that tends specifically towards Laura that I and many others have commented on, where they seem to think she has absolutely no say in anything and they need to protect her, but it's transparently a cover to hide that they hate 99% of her choices. Genuinely, I need everyone in the fandom to look in the mirror, and say "Laura Bailey has been a willing participant in every canon relationship her characters have been in, and indeed, typically, an equal or greater instigator thereof, and I don't need to like those choices, but I do need to acknowledge she made them." (While they're at it, they can shut the fuck up about the chibi pin hair being pink, like, let's talk about how Laura is in charge of merch and probably approved it personally, whereas some uh. other Imogen depiction choices, shall we say have been conspicuously absent from anything Laura may have had any say in; I think it's fair to assume she is fine.)
On top of that, I'm also openly someone who's like...I like Vax well enough, but he's not in the top half of VM characters for me. I also find the "TWINNIES" people who are obsessed with their earlier codependent behavior and continue to overlay it on the actors constantly as if they personally knew Laura and Liam, years after VM aired, to be rather insufferable. At the same time, though, Vax and Vex are indelible and central parts of each other's stories. Vex's story is about her, and Vax is a huge part of her, and it's stupid to pretend otherwise. Vex's story is also very much about how some part of her still wishes her father loved and respected her, and it's extremely about being able to love Percy, someone with their own struggles with darkness, and being able to ask him for help. Her story is very much her own, but her relationships with these three male characters are central to it, and you cannot excise them from the narrative to fulfill some elementary-school level surface-level idea of what Women In Fiction should look like. It's valid to want a story that is about a woman whose primary relationships, romantic or otherwise, are with other women. But Vex is not, canonically, that woman; you are making up an OC and giving them her face if you say she is.
(What I actually need is for everyone to watch the scene in which Scanlan leaves, actually; if you can watch that and internalize it, you will get Vex's character arc because she flat-out says it to Scanlan - and if you skip it bc you cry too much or whatever, you will not.)

the "dork"ening
whenever i remember isobel is a companion you can cart around with you in elder scrolls online, i'm always reminded of the huge deal they made about her when high isle was being advertised. she's voiced by laura bailey, who not only is a prolific voice actor but also voiced the fandom-favourite follower, serana, in elder scrolls v skyrim.
before coming out, zos and any advertising surrounding isobel would always describe her as a "dork". it felt a little weird, hearing the specific use of the word "dork" again and again without further elaboration. Isobel is a "dorky" companion. What does this mean? Is she socially awkward? Is she overly obsessive with becoming a knight? Does she know niche factoids about select special interests?
No.
none of those things are the case.
Oh, okay, so what does it mean then? What's isobel's deal, what's she about, what's her personality?
Nothing!
So why the continuous description of "dork"?
WELL. Seems like "dorky" is the new "quirky" shorthand for not actually writing a character.
Which is so weird because isobel has TONS to work with! Her introduction/recruitment quest shows character, shows all sorts of things:
She's a jock. She doesn't like the idea of spending time in a library looking through books. She doesn't seem to particularly like books BUT she does like stories. She has a childhood friend who she would do anything for who totally isn't her girlfriend you guys omggggggggg, winkwink nudgenudge.
And my favourite part, she hems and haws and frets over having to come up with a poem all throughout the recruitment quest, but at the end she's like 'no shaddup, i came up with one don't you DARE LAUGH aaaaaaaaa', and then reads the monstrosity like ---ohhhh wait for it --- an actual dORK? WHAT? It's awkward and horrible and she KNOWS, she knows aaaaaa she's so awful at poetry and hates it but wow she still did it and you didn't even have to help her and she puts up with the embarrassment and just boulders on through it and you kinda feel proud of her for doing that when she was dreading it so much, and WHAT IS THIS, CHARACTER?!? IN A ZOS GAME? IN MY ELDERSCROLLS?
But then when you bring her around exploring with you, all adventurer-like (because the game only sees your character as some nebulous 'adventurer'), all that potential is washed away in favour of worshiping the ground you walk on, and we get the absolute. worst. lines. of nothingness.

"I can't wait to explore this place! I know, I know. I'm strange."
This single line will not leave my head. It rots me. It rots me to my very core.
In a game centered on exploring where the writing deliberately refuses to see you as anything other than an adventurer who explores, with a function like the companion system where the entire premise (even IN THE WRITING) is you are joined by an npc to explore and the npc knowssss exploration is what they signed up for and is always the exact reason they join you at all...
the writers decided isobel should make this quip about being quirky because she likes exploring.
In a vacuum, the sentence is fine. Hell, it even has the whisperings of potential characterization like "Oh, why do you think that's strange?" and "you're so quick to dismiss it like people have told you you're a weirdo for voicing it before". But we don't get that here. This sentence by itself does. not. work. here. It does not work for the game, for the mechanics of companions, or even the individual "reason" (it's always the same reason) this particular character is exploring with us. That's literally what we're doing right now in this screenshot, we're exploring! This does not work!
Instead this line reads as self-congratulatory and out-of-touch with reality (on both isobel and the writers' parts)... which could be an interesting path to explore, but that's not what the writers intended with this. They intended this line to set isobel apart and above the crowd as an explorer... in a game about exploring.
Honestly it reminds me of the serana line that drops a lampshade on her backstory, making the character come off as "i'm not like other girls" and written by an idiot. That's what this line feels like. It feels like a window into the writers' brains when making this character: like they feel they're breaking new ground and making this character oh so special, when instead they're just playing with cardboard.
I haven't adventured long enough with isobel to unlock her friendship quests (but i have an idea of what circular path they'll go), and there's just so much more about her writing that turns me right the fuck away. It's honestly so disappointing (especially after all the hype-mongering) when we get tidbits of an interesting character who just loves the thrill of adventure and has a big major crush on tolwife lyris. It's a huge letdown.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: laudna and fearne. these witches be bitches. mostly laudna, if you couldn't tell by my reblogs and ao3 lmao
My non-romantic OTP for this character: i feel like imogen and orym is great. both of them have the group braincells, it seems, and i love to see them both reeling sometimes at the shit bell's hells decide to do (see: the ring situation)
My unpopular opinion about this character: listen y'all i love all that art of imogen with glasses, but i could really take it either way. dunno if that's unpopular but /shrug
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i really want to see them go to gelvaan and meet her dad! i feel like it could be another emotionally charged confrontation like beau in kamordah, and i'm just. i'm a slut for characters with daddy issues, and i just wanna know more about her mom too, so i just really want imogen returning to her hometown angst

i can give the rundown on a couple of them losing being a whole thing. you didn't ask for it but i'm gonna anyway from my perspective jfkashfgjhdaks
Ralof is simply the one running the poll's favourite, but I think a lot of people kinda forget to pay attention to him beyond choosing to follow him at the start of the game for the tutorial. ISQ has a million very good things to say about him and, while I admit I hadn't given him much thought before, I have to agree he's pretty great
Brynjolf is a fan favourite usually. He's a smooth talker, in a Scottish accent, and he's a thief so he's kinda got a "dangerous sexy" thing going for him. Plus he like, so very much cares about the thieves guild and idk something about the way he addresses you gets people going i guess. It didn't hit for me but that's just me, i AM truly shocked he's lost and I do like him in general
Cicero winning in round 1 and losing in round 2 was funny as fuck. ISQ finds him SO annoying. I find him kinda annoying as well, but man I was rooting for him a little bit cause it'd be funny if THEIR disliked one (that is still a person at least) one. Oh well, we move on
Him losing to SERANA, another fan favourite, because she's a troubled pretty vampire lady voiced by Laura Bailey, was just beautiful imo. Personally I love her because I like her ice spike tendencies in combat and that she can't die. I'd say "cicero eat your heart out" but uh, pretty sure she actually ate his heart already so
Any dragon winning any poll is so funny because ISQ's protests are "Alduin is TOO POINTY" and "Durneviir is a ROTTING CORPSE DRAGON" (He's like, alive enough to consent, so he doesn't count as necrophilia, but he body is rotty because he's not really supposed to Have One i guess). Alduin is also the Big Bad of the whole main game. Durneviir is at least a, like, neutral guy. He can be your friend :). Odhaviing is another dragon. He's plot important but he's not as funny to me as the WORLD EATER or the ROTTING BODY ONE
Teldryn??? Teldryn is just a merc you can hire as a follower. I'm not even sure if he has a quest at least, but don't quote me on that because I am nowhere NEAR observant. Didn't even know he existed until the past few days lmao. And the fact that HE beat Brynjolf? Insanity.
I have a personal vendetta against J'zargo because I can't stand anyone who talks like they're the greatest fucking thing ever. It's a whole thing. I don't think he deserves to be hated for his whole exploding cape thing or anything, I just don't like him. Great voice though. If he wins I'll be sad.
There are orcs in Skyrim. There are IMPORTANT orcs in skyrim. I have SEEN people call the orc librarian at the Magic College sexy. There were no orcs in the lineup. This is a personal affront and I will never recover (I main orcs)(I am not actually mad at isq)
Sheogorath is the god of madness. He's my favourite god. I want him to win. If it's not Serana (I have a lot of loyalty to her as well because of. Life reasons. And I really really really love the ice spikes) then I want it to be him.
Hermaeus Mora is the god of forbidden knowledge. There's a lot of tentacles in his realm. He's my second favourite god.
Cicero and Sheogorath both talk in a million directions. Cicero annoys me and Sheo doesn't. This is because Cicero is basically in love with a corpse and I find his and any character's obsession with the Dark Brotherhood (assassin guild) cringe as fuck. I do not feel that way about real life people who really love the DB
