Vampires being Southern confederates in the American pop culture tradition makes so much sense to me logically. Not saying that I don't believe it's propaganda, because it absolutely is. But planter vampires and confederate vampires (Jasper, Damon, Lestat, Louis, Bill Compton) make a lot of sense in the American context, as much as aristocratic and “Old World” vampires make sense in the British context.
If vampires are inherently Gothic, then vampires must symbolize and personify the vestiges of a long-gone past – one which only simmers to life from far below the surface when it’s time to reveal the horrors, or the romance, of what is usually an oft-forgotten history. In 19th-century Britain, through vampire short stories and novellas, and later Dracula, vampires evoked the (misunderstood and misappropriated) time of the Goths. This, in turn, brought to readers’ minds images of towering castles, the superstition of Eastern Europe, and the so-called barbarism of the Old World, that which was made to appear antiquated in its monstrosity and secret imperialist desires. (*sarcastic voice*) The Old World was so at odds with enlightened, modern, industrializing Britain! It’s no wonder that vampires in British literature took the forms of counts, noblemen, and princes – they were the conspiring, powerful leaders of the Old World, or the medieval world, or some forgotten pre-Industrial feudal world.
And if we are to apply this concept of what vampires should represent for the United States, it only makes perfect sense that vampires would be planters and confederates. Slavers, planters, and confederate fighters also evoke the Old America, conjuring images of Southern chivalry, the great Antebellum, and the humble pioneers of this free nation of God and goodness and prosperity! And then the confederates got their ass beat really bad. And they could only hold on to these romantic images of that former “honour and glory” through propagation of the Lost Cause myth. What better vehicle to wield this romanticisation of, yunno, the defense of chattel slavery than through vampire softbois?! Immortal beings who symbolize the survival and resilience of the Antebellum South through time. Why don’t we make them hot guys who were just protecting the South in our pop culture? Sure. If the vestiges of America’s long-gone past are slavery and genocide and, uh, chivalric Southern honour, then vampires do a pretty effective job of reminding us of this horrifying/romantic (you choose here) history. Spoiler alert: it’s horrifying.

Thanks for all of your help on alternative eras! The extra info on how magic can make exceptions is awesome. I’ll run some possibilities by you when I think of them, if that’s okay? I was wondering how it works with alternative presidents in films/stories. We don’t find out why Benjamin Asher (Olympus Has Fallen) or Thomas Wilson (2012), etc. are the US Presidents instead of Barack Obama or George W Bush? Are explanations necessary or is it because presidents are voted in and monarchies aren’t?
Fictional World Leaders vs Real Monarchs in Movies, TV, and Fiction
First, yes, feel free to run some possibilities past me when you come up with them. Just be sure to clarify if you want me to answer privately (which I can obviously only do off Anon.) :)
Also, before I go on, this is just a reminder that I’m not a lawyer or an expert in legal matters related to writing fiction. Nothing I say should be used as legal advice. :)
Now to your question…
Fictional Event vs Alternate History/Timeline
First, there’s a difference between a fictional event (an alien invasion, or terrorists storm the White House and take the president hostage) versus an alternate history/timeline (the Nazis won World War II, or Islamic and Chinese cultures rule the world after Europeans are mostly wiped out in the Black Plague.)
Fictional events are just fictional events. You’re asking the question, “How would America respond to an alien invasion?” In an alternate history/alternate timeline, you’re asking the question, “What if the Nazi’s had won World War II? How would the world have changed?”
It’s not the same thing. When you’re portraying an alternate history/alternate timeline, the whole point is to illustrate how a different outcome in a particular historic event would change everything, so you kind of have to explain why things are the way they are. But when you’re portraying a one-off fictional event like a terrorist attack or an alien invasion, the whole thing is fiction anyway. You can do whatever you want and you don’t have to explain anything outside the needs of the story.
Using fictional world leaders when portraying fictional events is an industry standard, not just in film and television, but often in books as well. The audience (and readers) expect a fictional president to go along with this fictional event, because it’s just the way things are done and have been done for a long time. These fictional presidents don’t have to be explained because the story isn’t about what alternate event led to them becoming president. The story is about some fictional thing that happens that isn’t meant to be part of an alternate timeline. They’re not president because of an alternate outcome of an historic event. They’re just a fictional president, end of story.
Other reasons why fictional world leaders are used in movies, TV, and books instead of real ones…
Libel in Fiction
Libel is when you publish a false statement of fact that is harmful to a real, living person’s reputation. It may seem illogical that libel can result from fiction, given that fiction is the opposite of fact, but people have been sued for libel because of the way they portrayed real, living people in fiction-based movies, TV, and books.
If you were to portray a real, sitting president as mucking up the response to an alien invasion or blatantly disregarding a CDC warning about a dangerous viral outbreak, you could potentially harm their reputation and maybe even cause them to lose support and votes. That obviously wouldn’t do, so most writers of TV, movies, and books choose to use fictional world leaders instead.
Creative License
Another thing to consider is that using a fictional world leader in place of a real one offers the writer greater creative license, because you’re not stuck with whatever behavioral, physical, or personality traits the real world leader happens to have. You’re also not bound to the facts of that world leader’s life, career, or administration. You get to make up whatever facts suit the needs of your story.
Sense of Timelessness
Sometimes, books, movies, and TV shows are meant to take place in “the present day,” meaning that you want the reader or viewer to feel like the story is happening now, recently, or in the near future rather than several years or more in the past. If you were reading a book like that, which was supposed to be taking place now, but then the main character started talking about turning on the TV to watch President Reagan’s State of the Union address, you’d know the story actually took place in the 80s and it would change your interpretation of the story. But if they were going to watch President Appleby’s State of the Union Address, you’re going to accept that as a normal part of fiction as you would any fictional TV or movie president.
Why Real Monarchs Are Sometimes Used in Books, Movies, and TV
Ceremonial vs Absolute Monarch
First, it’s important to know that not all kings and queens are true leaders of their nations. Of the 43 remaining monarchies in the world, only 7 are “absolute monarchies” meaning that the monarchs are the head of their nation’s government. The rest are all constitutional, semi-constitutional, or commonwealth, meaning that the monarch has little to no role in the actual governance of their nation. They are essentially ceremonial heads of state, there primarily to preserve an historic national tradition. So, while you still wouldn’t want to risk anything that could qualify as libel, there’s not the same danger of creating political upheaval if you use a real current monarch in your fictional event.
Appearance vs Character Portrayal
No matter who a person is or how they are portrayed, you should be very careful about using real people as characters in your story without their permission. It’s one thing to have your character wave to Joe Jonas in a coffee shop, but it’s something else entirely to have him play a character role in your story. That’s where you start stepping into potentially libelous territory, because a real person (whether they’re famous or not) can claim that your portrayal of them is harmful to their reputation.
Living vs Deceased
This applies to world leaders as well… things become a whole lot different when you’re talking about living people versus people who lived a long time ago. If you want Queen Victoria to appear in your fictional event or alternate timeline story, go for it! Portray her however you want! She and everyone who ever knew her is long dead, so you’re not going to harm her reputation or damage her ability to make money by making libelous statements about her. Do you think Abraham Lincoln would super love being portrayed as a feisty vampire hunter? I mean, I’m assuming not, but who knows. Either way, he was both a real person and a real world leader, and that obviously didn’t stop someone from writing a book and making a movie about it.
I hope that answers your question. :)

My Decade in Books
I was tagged by @the-forest-library to outline my decade in books! It will be rough because I have been very hit or miss in tracking my reading throughout the years, but I will do my best. I can't remember how to make this a read more, so I apologize in advace for mobile users. If anyone reads through this bless you.
2010: A year of great highs and some serious lows. I was still in high school so I was plagued by the books from required reading lists, such as The Alchemist, Of Mice and Men, and Lord of the Flies. I also read The Lovely Bones at the behest of a friend, which I still regret because it was so awful and weird. But 2010 was also the year I read A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Pride and Prejudice for the first time! If I recall though, I did not actually finish Pride and Prejudice at this time because I was reading it for a book report and there wasn't time to read the last 40 pages or so and get the assignment done. I still loved it though. A Thousand Splendid Suns was an instant favorite and if I recall was my go-to response to "What's your favorite book" for the next couple of years. I also spent a summer reading Sarah Dessen books which is an eternal mood.
2011: Still in high school and still being required to read books that just Aren't Good, like The Scarlett Letter and The Dante Club. BUT this year the required reading had some great treasures! I read To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time, as well as Night by Elie Wiesel. In the summer I picked up one of the more "popular" books that came out that year from the library called Heart of the Matter by Emily Griffith and it was so dumb that I was pretty much turned off of contemporary adult lit for a good bit. I read a couple more duds that summer at the recommendation of a friend (The Penny by Joyce Meyer and Love Walked In by Maria Des Los Santos). This was also the year I read The Epic of Gilgamesh out loud to my brother (his choice 🤷🏼‍♀️) on our annual roadtrip to North Carolina.
2012: The year I devoured the entirety of The Hunger Games. I remeber borrowing them all from various friends at school and reading them late into the night each time, taking like 2 or 3 days total on each. The required high school reading list this year was still terrible, with The Awakening and As I Lay Dying making an appearance. This was the year I read Macbeth though and to this day that is still my favorite Shakespeare play. We also read The Posionwood Bible which I remember having a love-hate relationship with. It's one of the few books I want to go back to and see if I'll like it more now that I'm not being forced to read it. This summer was the summer me and two of my best friends at the time read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society aloud to each other. To this day we still call one of my friends Clovis, after one the characters in that book. Another instant favorite. That summer my brother also attempted to start a book club, so we all read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (his choice again) which I shockingly remember enjoying. Another book I surprisingly liked that year was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which I had to read for a group project.
2013: This was a GREAT year of reading. The required reading list had some duds as always (The Master Buidler by Henrik Isben and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett), but this year we read The Crucible which I LOVED. We also read Heda Gabler (Isben) which I actually did NOT like, but for the associated project my friends and I wrote a song about the play, then filmed and edited an entire music video in the span of like three days. So that was definitely a highlight. That summer I read a couple more duds, The Graceling by Kristin Cashore and Go Ask Alice, which I had picked up at a garage sale for a quarter. I also read Hosseini's newest book that came out the previous year, and while it wasn't on par with A Thousand Splendid Suns, it was still good. After that I really started LIVING. I read The Help (and cried), I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time (and cried), I read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, and then ended the year with the most beautiful book, The Book Thief. I got it for Christmas and read it every second I had on our annual trip to North Carolina. I finished it in the car ride home and sobbed, much to the concern of my dad and brother.
2014: This is where my reading takes a serious nose dive as this spans the semesters in college where I was transitioning from majoring in pre-vet science into majoring in English. I read Twelfth Night in my first English Lit class in college, as well as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, some Chaucer, and 2/3 of Evelina by Frances Burney, which I absolutely loved but time didn't permit me to finish this one until years later. That spring break I borrowed and read The Fault In Our Stars. That summer I borrowed and read The Kite Runner (still think A Thousand Splendid Suns is Hosseini's best work). I vaguely remember being in a World Literature class the fall semester of this year and reading The Tempest, and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock (which I LOVED), but I don't remember much else from that class. I thiiink this is also the year I reread Harry Potter during the summer, but I don't remember. I know I reread the series in college, it's just all such a blur now 🤷🏼‍♀️
2015: The Fault In Our Stars the previous year put me on a serious John Green kick in the start of 2015. I read Papertowns on my flight home from my spring break trip to NY. Later that year I borrowed An Abundance of Katherines from a friend and which pretty much turned me off of John Green forever. I took my first American Lit class in college this year and realized I just don't like much American Lit. We read Fight Club, A Streetcar Named Desire, Summer by Edith Warton, Tender is the Night and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and I liked approximately zero of them. This year was the BEST year though because it was also the year I took a class just about the Brontë sisters. We read Jane Eyre (my third time at this point, I think. Always a favorite), Wuthering Heights (hated it) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (an absolute DELIGHT. Became one of my all-time favorites and my go-to recommendation for a couple of years). I ended the year reading a couple of quick, fun, cozy books during the holidays: Where'd You Go Bernadette and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (my first time and I absolutely loved it).
2016: This year had a BUNCH of lows, but there were a few standout stars. After a much needed schedule change at the beginning of the year, I ended up in another American Lit class which further my disdain for the subject. We read Typee by Hermamn Melville (snoozefest), My Ántonia by Willa Cather, half of some book by Keruac I think (so boring and uninspiring I don't even remember anything besides that I hated it and it had a red cover) and Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin. We did also read a collection of short stories by Flannery O'Connor and that was actually enjoyable, so there's hope for me and American authors yet. This was the year I also had my absolute FAVORITE professor for a Victorian Lit class. The theme was Scandal and Outrage or something like that so we read Alice and Wonderland, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and (most unfortunately) Tess of the D'ubervilles by Thomas Hardy. To be fair, at this time I actually probably only read like half of it due to all my other course work this semester, but it just was Not Good. The only high point from my lit classes this year was The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. An absolute treasure. That summer was a summer of duds. I read Harry Potter and The Cursed Child (truly cursed), Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell (just didn't really connect with the characters), and the absolure WORST BOOK Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. I'm not sure a book had ever made me as upset, or rage induced as this book did, but to this day I am still so mad I wasted time with it. I spent a lot of the year sloughing through a book I borrowed from the family I babysit for called The Myserious Benedict Society. I didn't finish it until the next year, but it took me forever to get through. The only other highlight of this year was reading Ender's Game aloud to my husband. That book took me by surprise in a great way. I did not expect to love it as much as I did. We also read the sequel this year, Speaker For the Dead, which although very different from Ender's Game was still good in its own rite.
2017: This year is when things really start picking up for me again. Toward the end of college, I was feeling very burnt out and uninspried by reading (probably because all of the lows the previous year). I rounded out my degree in one last lit class (another American Lit class of ALL classes), but since it was early American Lit, I actually did enjoy it a bit more. We read Native creation myths, Lousia May Alcott short stories, some Whitman and other authors from that movement and then rounded out the semester with Uncle Tom's Cabin. That summer after graduation was when I decided to work my through every book on my bookshelf, which was a pivotal turning point for me because I began to be excited about reading again. That summer I reread Little Women for the first time in years and absolutely LOVED it. I spent the rest of the year with Jane Austen, reading Persausion, Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. This was also the year I started reading Harry Potter to my husband (his first time reading the series!).
2018: My bookshelf goal still continues. This year I revisited the Brontë sisters, finally read Evelina in it's entirety (LOVED IT), revisted Sarah Dessen in the summer (for the first time since high school), and revisted some childhood classics (The Tale of Despereaux and The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo, as well as the BFG by Rold Dahl). I reread the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in preparation for the Netflix movie and finished two Harry Potter books with my husband. I ended the year with Little Men (so sweet 😭) and A Christmas Carol.
2019: I finally finished the first shelf (of three) of my bookcase. I spent almost half of my year in The Count of Monte Cristo and what a wondeful half year that was. Such a great story! I gave two haunts from required read past another chance: Scarlett Letter and Tess of the D'ubervilles. I was not a fan. I read three books by a local author from my childhood and The Outsiders. I finished the year returning to A Thousand Splendid Suns and was again taken away by how moving and beautiful it was. Also finished The Goblet of Fire with my husband during our annual trip to North Carolina.
Something I really enjoyed about this was not only seeing the ebbs and flows of my reading throughout the years, but seeing the common threads throughout the last decade. Road trips, certain books that kept coming up, friends and family I shared books with. This was a really fun thing to do for me so thank you Mable for tagging me! I don't have any one else to tag, but I highly encourage you to do it! It's so fun to see how books shaped the past 10 years. Tag me if you do. 💓

Messenger RP: Fight Talk; Then and Now
Fight Talk; Then and Now
Adam, Abe, Emily
20-23 October 2016 ______________________
Adam to Abe; protip - the coke you did isn't the coke Emily and Henry did. It's been refined to be a whole new monster. If you and Emily ever binge watch some shit don't let her egg you on. She can take moose coke that you can.
Abe to Emily: did he just fucking say that?
Emily: -puts her hands up- Don't look at me! I can't even believe we're having this conversation.
Adam: -chuckles-
Emily: Do you two talk often?
Abe: not really.
Emily: Are you just talking 'cause I'm here?
Adam: Henry's afraid well start punching each other if we're in the same place for too long.
Emily: -mutters- That's kinda what I was expecting... Or an intervention.
Abe: plus the mun can't come up with something for them to do in the room that won't end in frustration and at least a punch. And it's hard when is the same mun.
Emily: Is it bad that I'm kinda curious to see you fight?
Abe: These days he won't win as badly. I can put up at least some thing resembling a fight.
Adam: the first time we fought I actually never touched you and you still lost.
Abe: you don't have minions any more.
Emily: What about the strays?
Both: they hardly/don't count.
Adam: the are too young.
Abe: canon fodder.
Emily: Plus, weren't you human?
Abe: yeah, I was. Both times.
Emily: -looks between them both- I think he could take you for a round or two. Hey!! Do we have vampire MMA or boxing or anything?
Adam: No, no vampires in sport. Yet. Things go viral to easily these days. Once we have a 'place' then hell yeah.
Emily: We could do a fight in the ballroom. No tech allowed. Besides, I know most of the strays don't want to be found. That's why they're here.
Emily: I mean-- I'm not saying you SHOULD fight. Just that-- Just that it would be interesting.
Abe: I've been a duel...
Adam: you sure you've been keeping in shape?
Emily: -looks more excited than she really should-
Abe: It would be really hard to keep it a friendly match. It's far too easy for these things to get personal.
Emily: I'll fight you?
Abe: I don't know if that's a good idea. I don't know if I could really fight you so much as as move about a bit and let you punch me.
Emily: Are you afraid to fight me?
Abe: I don't want you to take this the wrong way.... I can't always control my strength and I... accidents happen. I'm afraid I might hurt you.
Emily: -clenches her jaw tightly- I'm stronger than I look. And quicker than you can imagine. I might get scared, but-- I'm strong. And we're nearly the same age!
Abe: I know. I know you're capable and I know I'm being absurd.
Emily: -looks to Adam almost pleadingly-
Adam: she's been on her own, and Henry taught her sone things. And so did I, for that matter. She could give you a run, Lincoln. But Emily.... you have to keep in mind /when/ he's from. He's lost fights.... several. All against lady vampires.
Emily: -sighs dramatically- Just like the boys near one of my schools. 'It's not proper to hit a lady.' Is that right? Well then, I'll just go ahead and give you a good bop on the nose! Guess how long I lasted at THAT school?
Abe: *smiles* and it's wonderful that you can do that. I... on the one issue, I cant help it. I know I need to let go of those thoughts. But on the other... as Adam how hard I hit.
Emily: -grumbles- I'm from the same time... And English!
Emily: Did you ever fight ada's sister?
Abe: Yeah I did. And I lost. Spectacularly. Part of it is because she took her skirt off half way through the fight.
Adam: bull shit! You ran at her chin first and she kicked you in the face. One of the funniest damn things I've seen in a long time was when she tossed her skirt all 'toro toro'.
Abe: she took her skirt off and you threw a chair at me.
Emily: -barely holding back giggles- Seriously?
Adam: seriously.
Abe: *slowly nods*
Emily: That's fucking epic! And I thought I was bad when I cut a slit up the side of my skirt and nearly gave some 13 year old snot a coronary when he saw my bloomers. Wait-- Why'd you throw a chair at him?
Adam: I want throwing it at him, but Vadoma. She caught it after kicking him flat in his back and then pour the choir down in top of him to sit on and pin him.
Emily: Ooookay... Why'd you throw a chair at Vadoma? And why were you all fighting in the first place?
Abe: it.... he invited me to attend a ball.
Emily: That's... Nice?
Adam: It was an integrated ball in an age when Lincoln was still an ass. The fact that whites and blacks were mingled and dancing together pissed him off enough that he drew his ax and charged in. Vampire defended and humans fled. The humans who were eaten that night were court appointed executions as he later found out. Black and White and human and vampire all together for a ball.
Abe: I told you would wouldn't like me very much back them, Emily. But, Adam... perhaps I wouldn't have been so quick to violence if you hadn't have kidnapped a friend of mine to get me there.
Emily: You wanted him to see that everyone could get along on equal footing, right? Be he-- -looks to Abraham- But you wouldn't listen. 'Cause if you were an ass about blacks and whites integrating, then I can't even imagine what you were like with the idea of humans and vampires together. -turns back to Adam- That's why you took his friend, right? To force him to come and see for himself. I'm not saying it was the BEST idea, but I kinda understand...
Abe: I was a very different man back then. I've grown since then.
Adam: thank the gods for that.
Emily: How old were you?
Abe: ooooh.... working at Speed's shop so... 20-25. Maybe 28 at the most.
Adam: if I might.... Em... Dad bragged. Lincoln is the only time I've ever heard Henry brag. Long before Jack stole the watch, everyone, well undead at least, knew who Lincoln was. I was astonished to hear that Henry was actually bragging. Not only about Lincon's skill as a hunter, but Henry had alluded to a world changer. To Lincoln's credit.....
Abe: I hate that word
Adam: he was out there campaigning for rational race relations. During his brief first run with politics he stopped slavery in his district. But there was an acceptable split hair in those days. You could hate slavery and still be a racist.
Adam: the ball was because I was desperate to meet the man Henry thought worthy of bragging about. But as a lead to Henry and maybe Lincoln really was the answer. A way out of the war before it happened. But the man in the ball room want yet ready to change the world, he was a righteous hypocrite.
Abe: I was also recovering from a bout with depression at the time of the ball.
Emily: Who started the fight?
Adam: to be honest I think we both did. The moment he set foot in Eden I knew he was a hypocrite. So I disappointment made me sarcastic. Really? That's the man who inspired Henry and Henry was in love with? Also running into the house bearing an ax with start some shit, in any age.
Adam: did you really have to drive a wagon though the ball room and my living room and hall way just because Vadoma sat on you?
Emily: SERIOUSLY?!
Abe: now wait a minute.... you threatened to force me to turn and you said you'd spoon feed me the blood of my friend!
Abe: yeah I drove a wagon through the house. Right through those big windows in the living room and ball rooms.
Emily: -spins back to face Adam- You were gonna what--?!
Adam: disappointment makes me sarcastic.
VW OOC: they had a vampire sidebar about the other thing Adam said that night. Abe isn't brining it up because Henry asked him to stop airing family laundry. Adam because he and Henry have already spoken about it and worked it out.
KC OOC: Which was?
Emily: That doesn't sound sarcastic, that sounds... That sounds super villainy.
VW OOC: Adam asked Abe to kill Henry. - in game Adam was grandstanding for the minions just to get Abe into the office where they could really talk.
Adam: I forget sometimes, that not everyone is as jaded as I am. My sense of humor reflects it.
Emily: That just seems like something you don't joke about. It's like-- It's like a rape joke. Those of us that were turned against our will, in fear and pain and-- And it's just not right to joke about.
Adam: yeah I know that now. It was mostly sarcastic, but very villainy. Stop being an idiot. Stop being a hypocrite. You have a destiny and you have Henry.
Emily: You were jealous.
Adam: yeah.
Emily: I can't believe you actually admitted that.
Adam: I'm not the jealous type. Henry's been with others; men and women, and more power to him for it. But even if Henry was bragging about Lincon, Lincoln wasn't making him happy. In fact.... no I'm not going there.
Abe: she knows that I tried to kill him at least twice.
Emily: I'm starting to get why dad REALLY doesn't want you two in the same room for long.
Abe: though the second time wasn't really trying to cut Henry's head of more than it was me goading him into killing me. Didn't work.
Adam: Mmmm mm. Then it's only fair she know. I didn't only threaten to force Lincon to turn and spoon feed him his friends blood..... we were surrounded by vampires. Eden was at its height during the ballroom fight. I just wanted to get you into a privet room and you had just killed 20 vampires. They weren't going to give us privacy any other way.... so I asked Lincon if he was willing to kill Henry.
Adam: to his credit he was a loyal hypocrite.
Adam: Dad and I have talked about this. He knows I was in a difficult position and desperate to get into contact with him at that time.
Adam: as for how hard he can punch..... it's hard. Even as a human. Standing swing, no pull back.... he punched a hole into my gut using a silver watch.
Emily: -winces and whimpers quietly- Was that at the ballroom or-- Or the train?
Adam: the punch was on the train. It's why I couldn't get off before it collapsed.
Emily: And dad... Dad dropped it on you?
Adam: A stroke of Providence by accident. It's not like he could aim it, after all. I watched from below. The train almost made it to the end of the bridge. Just 1 foot more and Lincoln and Will could have jumped to safety. But it didn't get there. The angle was to steep. The train began to slide backwards, into the gorge. And then 2 things happened right after another.....first the train stopped moving. Even after the rail and wood had gone from under it. The train stayed right where it was, even moved forward a foot.
Adam has an odd smile akin to devilish pride
Adam: Henry was picking it up. He lifted quite a few tons of steel and iron. Henry was in a hell of a spot that night and knew he could only save one of us. He picked Lincoln. I always knew Henry was stronger than anyone knew. Physically and mentally. My bother and sister, Lincoln. Even the Union. They all underestimated him and now there he was picking up a damn train.
Adam: but he couldn't hold it for long. He saved us both that night. Abe jumped to safety. But I was facing a rain of fire and stakes and red hot steel railing. I couldn't run and would have burned but Henry dropped the train and a car fell on me. A steel beam and a rock pile broke open the side just moments before it hit and I was safe. - spent the night in a makeshift oven but I should survive a bit of heat easily enough.
Emily: -eyes dart wildly between her father and Abraham- Oh. My. God. If this is my family history, reincarnation doesn't seem unlikely.
Emily: I can't believe you two can sit here together!
Abe: Time is funny like that. It's great for cooling anger. Might take a while more before we get to neutral ground. But I have to face it; that war was a moment in time. I wish to God that it had give differently, quicker and kinder. But Adam hasn't given a hint of anything like that since. I grew up. Perhaps he's still growing.
Emily: -smiles at her dad- I think we all are.

The 10 Best Wellness Trends Of The 2010’s

With the sun having set on the 2010s, what are the top wellness trends to take into the New Year … [+] 2020? (Photo: Getty Images)

Every chocolate eclair has a golden lining. While the 2010’s have had its share of bogus and bad wellness trends, it’s also had its good ones. On the last day of the past decade, I covered for Forbes the Top 10 worst wellness trends of the twenty-teens. Let’s use the New Year to cover the really good ones. Now without further doggie-doo, here are the Top 10 best:
10. Athleisure, activewear, and eco-friendly apparel
“Athleisure” or “activewear” clothes are more comfortable but also stylish garbs that you can wear during athletic activities as well as others such work, going to school, attending parties, and getting arrested at protests. It’s basically melding sportswear with everyday wear, making it easier to meld physical activity with everything else. Why not? After all, many classic office-wear clothing items make about as much sense as the lyrics of the song Ice, Ice Baby. For example, neckties have little practical purpose, except to dab the tears in your eyes from your dreams being slowly crushed by your boss.
Then there are eco-friendly clothes, those that are less likely to pollute the environment. For example, they may be made out of natural fibers rather than petroleum-based clothing, which can be a source of microplastics, making oceans look like a bedazzler gone overboard, so to speak, as I’ve covered before for Forbes.

9. More flexible work hours and more attention to family leave policies
While I was in medical school, an anesthesiologist once told me, “the best thing about anesthesiology is that you get into work at 6 am and then.” Everything sort of went hazy after he said that, because, to borrow a quote from the movie Jerry McGuire, he definitely didn’t have me at 6 am. Even if he had continued by saying,”they provided gold bars and sushi,” that workday start-time basically ruled out anesthesiology as a career option for me.
Fortunately, the 2010s saw increasing recognition that not everyone operates best at the same hours. On one end of the spectrum are night owls, who prefer later-to-rise-and-later-to-bed hours. At the other end are people whose sole purpose is to make night owls miserable: the early morning people, the larks. Then, there is a whole continuum of people in between. Over the past decade, more and more workplaces began offering more flex hours, allowing employees to better tailor their “on times” to their own personal working styles.
Another trend was paying more attention to having more reasonable family leave policies. Note that the words are “paying more attention to” and not actually changing them. While some organizations have responded by offering longer family leave, not all are allowing mothers and fathers much time with, you know, those living, breathing, peeing, and pooping things that have appeared in their houses and apartments. As John Oliver pointed out in this 2015 episode of Last Week Tonight, the U.S. still lags most of the world (except for perhaps Papa New Guinea) in this area:
8. Doing something about the sitting problem
Is sitting literally the new smoking, as some began claiming that it is? Not exactly, unless you are doing something really weird with your bottom. What this saying is supposed to highlight are the dangers of sitting around too much, which can lead to an increased risk of obesity and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The 2010s saw various trends aimed at decreasing your sitting time, such as standing desks, conducting meetings while standing, desk cycles, computer screen reminders to periodically get off of your butt, and the movie “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” to get you moving more or out of your seat. Not all of these will necessarily sit well with time though. Standing too long has its perils too, such as back and foot issues, and people asking you to stop blocking their view in the movie theater. And if you’ve got a standing desk, you’ve got to be real careful when propping your feet on the desk.

7. More plant-based diets
Eating more plants and less meat can be better for not only your health but also the environment. Fruits and vegetables are naturally lower in saturated fat and sodium and can be higher in sodium and many types of nutrients and antioxidants. Plus, meat production can add lots of carbon and other types of pollution to the environment, and it’s not just from cows farting. The past decade did see an increase in plant-awareness and plant-based options. Heck, there is even meat-free haggis now, which is a bit like Game of Thrones without the killing and the sex. Keep in mind, though, plant-based doesn’t automatically mean healthy. Some plant-based dishes can have plenty of bad stuff added such as saturated fat, salt, sugar, and artificial ingredients. Also, if you are vegan, don’t go acting like the Todd Ingram vegan character in the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Being vegan won’t automatically make you better than others, as this tweet references:
6. Waking up to sleep problems
What you do in bed matters, a lot. No, not that the stuff that takes on average 5.4 minutes to do with a range of 0.55 minutes to 44.1 minutes, based on a study of men in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, and the United States published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Instead, I’m referring to what you usually do in bed, which is sleep or, at least try to sleep. Getting less than seven hours of sleep a night is linked to increased risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, frequent mental distress, and death. And if you are dead, you can’t do that other stuff in bed, at least you really shouldn’t. A study published in the February 19, 2016, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found that more than a third of Americans regularly fall below this seven hour threshold. While many of these sleep problems have not yet been adequately solved, at least there seems to be more awareness for now.

5. Meditation and mindfulness
And Zen there’s this trend. It isn’t a completely new trend. In fact, various meditation and mindfulness practices have been common for hundreds of years in many parts of Asia. What’s new is these practices are becoming more mainstream in the U.S. For example, my previous article in Forbes covered how the NBA has incorporated such practices into its Rookie Transition Program. Being more in touch with your mind, your feelings, and your environment can’t be a bad thing. Maybe mindfulness can help counteract another trend that’s happening on social media: mindlessness.
Here is a video from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) on the origins and traditions of meditation:
4. Personalized health, nutrition, etc.
Surprise, surprise. Everyone is not the same. You all don’t have the same bodies, the same minds, and the same circumstances. You all don’t like to dab. For too many years, too many people, whether its medical researchers, people trying to sell stuff like diets and medications, or people making policies and guidelines, have overlooked the individual and tried to lump people together into gigantic buckets. The 2010s saw increased realization that this just doesn’t work, that you actually have to, gasp, get to know someone before making many judgments and giving advice.
3. Talking more about mental health
If you have a bleeding arm, would you ever try to hide it or fear that someone will say, “ha, ha, that’s the bleeding arm guy, look at how bleeding his arm is.” Similarly, hiding mental health issues for fear of stigma and social and career implications makes little sense. You can’t address an issue if you don’t know about it. The 2010s had a number of athletes, movie and television stars, and other celebrities be more frank about their mental health challenges. For example, in this Today show segment, celebrities Carson Daly, Kristen Bell, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Love and Michael Phelps discuss their anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges:
2. Efforts to increase sports participation and make it more inclusive.
Physical inactivity has become a major worldwide problem that’s gotten worse in the 2010s. Sport participation, especially among kids, dropped in the 2000s and much of the 2010’s with sports becoming too expensive, too competitive, and too inaccessible to play for many and a range of more sedentary activities like social media and putting Tide Pods in your mouth competing for attention.
But there is hope. The past decade witnessed increasing diversity among professional and other high profile athletes. Events like the 2019 Women’s World Cup provided a greater showcase for women’s sports:

The tail end of Ichiro Suzuki’s major league baseball career, the spectacular beginning of Jeremy Lin’s NBA career, and Chloe Kim’s gold-medal-winning 2018 Winter Olympic debut got more people used to seeing those of Asian descent as top athletes.

The 2010s also saw more Black athletes dominate in roles, such as being an NFL quarterback, that not too long ago seemed reserved for White athletes. Moreover, initiatives like Project Play 2020, which I have described previously for Forbes, launched to increase youth participation in sports.
1.Finding ways to decrease sugar and salt consumption.
Oh sugar, who would have thought that drinking sugar water would be a bad thing? In the 2010s, there was finally a whole lot more attention paid to the dangers of adding sugar to everything. This included trying to find ways to curb the consumption of sugary drinks, such as warning labels and soda taxes, and helping people better understand how much sugar is being added to food. One example is when First Lady-at-the-time Michelle Obama worked with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to add a new category to the Nutrition Facts label: “Added Sugars.” The actual implementation of this change has been delayed under President Donald Trump’s administration.

This list certainly ain’t everything that was good about wellness the 2010s. Also, some wellness trends in the decade were a bit mixed. For example, wearables really became a thing. The good thing about these tech devices is that you can wear them on your body to monitor what you do. The bad thing is that you can wear them on your body to monitor what you do. Questions remain about the usefulness of the information being collected and the impact of others knowing this information.
Alas, 2020 is no longer just name of a television show or a perfect reading on an eye exam. It is now when we are. How many of these best wellness trends will continue and expand? You may want to sleep on it.
