Touchstarved as Arcane

I just listen to the Arcane soundtrack a bunch while creating my Touchstarved OCs' backstories and I wanted to ascribe the characters to each song.

"Playground" by Bea Miller = Vere. I love this song for him. Even the vibe fits him.

"Who told you what was down here? Come along if you wanted a peek. I've seen your face around here. Come alone, tell me under the table What do you seek?"

"Welcome to the playground, follow me. Tell me your nightmares and fantasies. Sink into the wasteland underneath. Stay for the night, I'll sell you a dream."

It could also fit Elyon? I don't know anything about him but it feels like this line in particular would fit his character:

"Everybody's got a price 'round here to play. Make me an offer, what will it be?" (there's no dark blue colour on the website so I gave him girlboss pink. I think it's fitting.)

"Goodbye" by Ramsey = Mhin. They're an outsider, which means they had to come from somewhere, right? And they probably had to bid that part of their life goodbye.

"I can hear the sound of a heartbeat before it goes out. Won't ever leave my memory of bloodshed all around."

So many of these songs are just me running free with my assumptions of what their backstories are based on the little info we've got from the demo. Anyway, I imagine that line relating to Mhin losing control of their curse and the death that resulted in it.

"Be still, 'cause I see smoke up ahead and I got steel in my hands. We will return like warriors, I swear, that we'll find glory up ahead."

I just liked the "steel in my hands" line for Mhin because of how we first meet — it's right there. The bloodied blade in their hand.

"Dirty Little Animals" by BONES UK = Ocudeus and the Seaspring groupmind.

"Novocaine, never same, giving local luck But when you go under, you will never go back up."

Also, surprisingly Kuras. Only this part, though:

"Taste what fell from grace Wanna taste what fell from grace? Run away from the faith. Let's race if you want a taste."

There's the part about falling from grace, going against faith, and a bunch of running away which reminds me of that scene with Kuras and MC running from a Senobium cleric.

"Enemy" by Imagine Dragons ft. J.I.D. = Hound!MC (this MC is so Arcane-coded…so many of the songs could fit them). But also Ais, I think I remember something about him mentioning he makes enemies pretty easily (which is hilarious because almost every Touchstarved character likes him), and he seems to think of himself as a black sheep.

"I'm searching to behold the stories that are told When my back is to the world that was smiling when I turned. Tell you you're the greatest, But once you turn, they hate us."

"Guns for Hire" by Woodkid = I think this could fit both Ais and Leander. But I feel like the song has different meanings when imagined with each of them. The line about "losing control," for instance.

"Not a good night to lose control Right as the Earth is unraveling."

"Not a good time to lose control Right as your marionettes cut their strings and run away."

When I imagine the song with Ais, it feels like him losing control over himself or his monster form. With Leander, it feels like it's about him losing control over others, maybe his mask chipping away.

And there are just so many parts that could fit them both, but they carry different meanings depending on who you imagine the lyric with.

"Tuck your innocence goodnight. You sold your friends like guns for hire." (still don't know what happened to Ais's gang)

"Resting on a knife, you heavy souls With all this weight buckling down on you now Don't you drown and float away."

"When Everything Went Wrong" by Fantastic Negrito = Ais and his tavern brawls.

"Ninety-nine ways that you're willing to die […] Broken beer bottles that are starting to fly […] Temper start to flare, now they're starting to fume I know my time is coming soon."

But also, when did everything go wrong? How did it go wrong? What happened to Ais's gang? And maybe it happened around the same time Ocudeus did?

"I lay down to die on the concrete floor. Now that's when everything went wrong. The devils coming after me."

"What Could Have Been" by Ramsey = Sen and Alchemist!MC or Unnamed!MC.

"I hope you know we had everything When you broke me and left these pieces. I want you to hurt like you hurt me today and I want you to lose like I lose when I play what could have been." (Eh, fuck it, Sen also gets pink. The DLC LIs are Barbie babes)

"I am the monster you created […] I am your ghost, a fallen angel. You ripped out all my parts."

"And worst of all, for me to live, I gotta kill the part of me that saw That I needed you more […] I couldn't care what invention you made me 'Cause I was meant to be yours."

Again, most of Sen's is just me assuming what her story is, but this is a good angsty Frankenstein's monster type song.

I think it fits Alchemist! and Unnamed!MC more so than the Hound!MC, because they are the two backstories that involved mentor figures or a community moulding them for specific purposes.

Rock/Poison/Corrupted? (or 'is Geeta evil? Probably not, she's just a bit awkward, but here's why if she is')

... Huh. Are y'all good? There's a fair amount of evil!Geeta speculation online, and like... I can't honestly sit here and say to you that she isn't a little sus, but...

And I know that I've personally commented before on how the Elite Four are the AU Treasures of Ruin and that if they are, that must mean Geeta is their evil 'king' (because, y'know... Kingambit. Her name means 'heightened surface', like the stakes. She picked her own Elite Four. She runs several institutions, and she also just so happens to give you this.)

... But evil? Really? We actually out here assuming this woman's Volo incarnate for being a bit socially awkward and giving you a King's Rock? Yeah nah, sorry. You're going to need a little more than that to convince me, friends. At the moment, she just looks like a woman in a position of power who's a bit curious maybe but is slaying. When you write as much meta as I do, you need the good shit.

Except... I think we already have it, two generations ago. I'm sure we all remember this lovely lady...

Oh, now we're talking. This is the good shit. :D

There are only two Rock and Poison types available in all of the Pokemon world: one has a very close association with Lusamine, and the other is owned by Geeta.

And, er... we all know how well this ended for Lusamine...

Mmm. Purple, black, and gold accents... now where have I seen that before?

... Oh, yeah. Casually stalking me around Paldea after I bother getting a decent number of badges. Well, fuck...

The purple for the Poison, the gold for the Rock, and the black for... well, they do call the Dark type 'Evil' in Japan... that's my kinda colour symbolism. ;) And before you come at me and tell me the Rock type's more brown... not in Paldea it isn't, pals, because this is a Rock Tera den.

Now, whilst Lusamine had an emotional trigger that left her more susceptible to the neurotoxins Nihilego produces...

... Geeta is permanently walking around with this shit.

This is her day job, yeeting the sentient embodiment of poison at you in all its concentrated glory. And whilst I could make a good case for her having the exact same emotional trigger as Lusamine, I can't prove it, and I don't deal in pure speculation. :) But I can happily prove that she has own issues - issues that could quite easily be twisted to darker purposes, and perhaps already have been.

This is an excellent example of pure, and unrepentant, arrogance. She shows zero remorse in saying no one can get through her, and yet you and I know that she has very little on her team to back up this overconfidence. She's seen by most people as the easiest champion we've ever had, and... maybe this is why. Because she must have known at some point, right? No one gets this far without being damn good at least earlier in their life...

Maybe once upon a time, Geeta did know exactly how to construct a team. She knew to put Kingambit last, and she knew to put Glimmora first. But... well, I've analysed final slots before, with Larry and Staraptor/Flamigo, and concluded that the last slot in a trainer's party symbolises potential - what that trainer could be, for better or for worse.

And, well...

The 'Top Champion' can't be a Kingambit, because she already is.

(Hilariously, this is the Violet dex's version of Kingambit, which is also ringing a little bit close to home.)

But if the final slot is potential...

... Oh. Oh, hell. The genuine definition of 'toxic' there...

It's also very worth mentioning on the battle front that whilst Lusamine is also a powerful trainer, her AI is... questionable when you face her, to reflect her erratic nature under the influence of Nihilego. I don't know man, it's almost like there's a link here... /sarcasm

And although the anime's a separate canon, the idea is very much the same.

So, whilst I'm not expecting some weird Glimgeeta fusion-ha! shit going on here, if you take the already-present social curiosities of our Top Champion, throw in the arrogance and the power she holds, and combine it with sentient venom...

Is Geeta evil, friends? Pffft, still not convinced. The great majority of her in-game time is spent being (seemingly, anyway) genuinely supportive of you, Nemona, and anything you both do to achieve greatness. Even those gym leaders who have a problem with her - Tulip, Katy, Larry and Grusha - all have their reasons, but they spring from a place of circumstance. Larry admits later she was right to ask him to use a new type and broaden his horizons; Grusha is afraid of her because she could fire him, and yet he's still gym eight; Katy understands that she can't go all out because of where she is, it just frustrates her... the only one with a truly viable case here is Tulip. Because if the Psychic-type gym leader thinks your vibes are off... your vibes are probably a bit off. But, despite all of that... I can't ignore the sus here. I can't ignore the Glimmora; I can't ignore the potential, whether it's been realised yet or not.

And so, if Geeta's evil... it's not because she's a woman, or a bad champion, or a tyrant, or whatever the hell else. It's because she shares a luxury apartment with a Hell Crystal.

... a Hell Crystal that doesn't tera Poison. Maybe, so far, the Rock's been strong enough to hold out... let's see if it stays that way in the DLC, shall we?

mario movie predictions

(for context I’m writing this before the trailer has been released)

this will not be a “good movie”

unfortunately, it also won’t be bad in interesting ways

you’ll definitely be able to tell that many people who worked on this care about the source material. background details will be filled with deep-cut references to things from across the whole franchise, including things nintendo hasn’t acknowledged in decades

those will be completely overshadowed by the lore references in the script, which are the most Dorkly-ass nostalgia bait “hey remember Mario?” type gags a committee of soulless writers could come up with

it’s (at least partially!) an origin story, obviously, but they’re not allowed to deviate from established “canon” enough to come up with anything interesting. the best they can do is reference relatively lesser-known games like Wrecking Crew. they won’t reference Mario Bros. (Game & Watch) because they’re cowards.

it’s a comedy, but they only have like five good jokes. all five of those jokes will be featured in the trailer, so a bunch of people who don’t know how trailers work will think it looks good

the majority of the gags are jokes you’ve heard a million times before. peach sure gets kidnapped a lot! did you know mushrooms are also drugs? if you’re the Mario Brothers does that mean your name is Mario Mario? hey what if “cake” is a euphemism for something!! mario eats mushrooms he’s on shrooms get it

chris pratt’s mario voice is okay. it sounds kinda like mario’s voice in hotel mario, but with less personality

charles martinet’s cameo is as mario. the first time mario says something, it’s in martinet’s voice, then he clears his throat and has a more boring voice for the rest of the movie

princess peach girlboss moments

there’s a “mario is a bad brother” subplot. mario mistreats luigi consistently, and it’s not resolved by mario growing as a person it’s resolved by luigi doing something cool and “earning” mario’s respect

coincidentally mario DOES grow as a person, when he eats the super mushroom : )

roxy retexture time (cause why the heck not?!)

This is Racer Roxy! From one of my little GJ previews (I was heavily debating on calling her girlboss roxanne, but the brain cells inside of my head begged me not to)

You can find the art here in my Pillowfort! (Due to ai scraping on Tumblr, my main blog is now over on PF!)

I only made this because i loved her original design but thought it could use a bit more (like the emphasis here on the racing theme)

I also (for some reason) decided to give root growth to the green hair, just thought it would look cool (even though she is an animatronic and probably can't grow hair)

Im probably not gonna release this but feel free to remake it or do whatever else with it, go wild, go groovy!!11!

Kaeya - my one and only, main genshin blorbo. Hits all of my preferences. he has mistplitter while Ayaka is on blackliff, I got 5 his cons from standard without whaling while Lisa and Amber are both C1, bc what we have is special

Ningguang – my self-projection, I think she's hot, sure, but I mostly sympathize with her. Ofc, I’m not rich, but I also started from selling fast food to managing position. And she’s misunderstood as being too cold and menacing when she’s actually well-meaning. She also loves thinking up systems, is a tabletop nerd and regularly tells ppl to submit.

Kazuha - babygirl. the cutest, an absolute sunshine, deserves the world. my only limited 5 star with C2. i'm thinking of getting him freedom sworn, but tbh it highkey clashes with him and he's a weapon of mass destruction on 4 star swords rn, so idk

Beidou - gurrrrrrrrl women want her aquatic monsters fear her, who doesn't think Beidou is hot

Heizou - kitten. eager, hyperactive, needy and affectionate, playful and mischievous, can be a little awkward and exhausting sometimes, but he's too cute to actually get mad at him

Zhongli - I only think Zhongli is hot as a young himbo dragon lmao

Jean has like v interesting blend of dualities that isn’t loud or immediately obvious, she is the lady AND the knight, she is perfectly poised AND a little socially awkward, she’s elegant and fresh like a breeze AND perpetually tired, and so on. i like kind characters who might be quiet, but complex in unexpected ways

Albedo - little prince

Dainsleif - angsty, stoic and repressed are usually not my type, but he's very hot in "doomed by the narrative from the start" way. And also all Khaenri'ah men just have certain je ne sais quoi about them, that country only made hot ppl.

Enjou - unhinged librarian. masochist and is into dark arts, what's not to love. His and Lumine's rivalry is doing it for me in a way Childe can't

mk ik this isnt in the exact theme of the blog but here me out (also HEAVY spoilers for sc/vi, please for the love of god play it first if you're interested because gamefreak did it!!! the story goes hard!!!!!)

i never got the impression that Geeta was evil. like never, shes just a bossgirl girlboss whos like a pretty decent boss. average stuff all around from her.

however, i strongly, STRONGLY, believe that Geeta is an android

SHES NOT REAL!!!!! SHE IS NOT A REAL PERSON!!!!!!!! SHE IS NOT REAL SHE IS NOT REAL SHE IS NOT RE-

the way she talks the way she acts, EVERYTHING about this woman screams to me 'i am a manufactured human being'.

this isnt to say she doesnt matter somehow or she doesnt have feelings/thoughts/emotions. she clearly does. but so did AI Turo/Sada. she could still very much be an android whos able to think and feel in a similar way!!!!

if this isnt the case/isnt brought up in the DLC i will legit be surprised. theres SO much evidence to her being one in-game that its a bit hard to pick out examples, its just kind of in everything shes in and does.

like ill no means be mad at gamefreak, i myself cant really think of a way Geeta is able to walk around outside the crater if AI Turo/Sada couldnt. maybe its something to do with the way tera orbs work? maybe something to do with those weird panels mentioned in the scarlet/violet book in the academy? dunno, but i dont think it's impossible to make it so it doesnt undermine AI Turo's inability to leave the crater while making sense in the worldbuilding weve got. AIs are new to the series after all, theres a lot more stuff they can do with em.

and whether or not this theory is/isnt true, shes still an android to me. idc what gamefreak says shes not REAL!!!!!11!!1!!

and again, by no means her being an android makes her bad/evil. i just think the potential character drama from the gym members, school staff, main characters, and general public is SO golden. like imagine you find out that your boss is actually an artificial AI, i'd have a panic attack. the potential for varying reactions depending on each character, especially the gym members, is SO so good.

(also im not mentioning team star in this case because i dont think theyd really care all that much? like yeah thats their new boss of 2 weeks and yeah shes La Primera n all but they werent exactly a fan of the system in the first place, and while they probably dont hold any bad feelings towards the system anymore, they havent really been given much urgency to care all that much. as long as Geeta is nice to Penny, they wouldnt really care if Geeta's an AI. theyve all dealt with being outcasted for being different, theyre not gonna do that to someone else just because theyre an AI. Penny will probably find out Geeta's an android first but again i think she'd be chill about it. she'd probably be like "oh rad a robot mom, just like my videogames" and then work on antivirus programs meant for Geeta in order to sorta pay her back for taking Penny under her wing)

but yea thats pretty much my thoughts on robo Geeta. is you can see i have a lot of thoughts on this!! hope yall enjoyed me spiraling over this revalation

Chidori Yoshino. Yes, she was party to multiple murders. No, there was no real goal or justification beyond money. Yes, she was utterly indifferent to the blood on her hands. No, she never really changed her mind about that or ever came to understand why standing idly by and letting Takaya murder people who she helped track down was bad, nor did anyone ever really try to explain it to her. Yes, she kind of just said "whatever man" and went off to have her own character arc completely divorced from the murder. No, I do not care. She is my precious little angel she didn't deserve anything that happened to her she needs all the love and understanding in the world.

Clive Dove. MFW I'm traumatized and orphaned as a child and the man responsible not only faces no consequences but even becomes Prime Minister and so I build an entire fake future London underground beneath the real London and conspire with a man who created an actual real functional time machine to trick some people and kidnap the prime minister and smuggle him away and make a fake evil future version of the guy who comforted me after my parents died and then pose as the future version of his apprentice to get close to him and kidnap his daughter also at one point and really just let everything get out of hand up until the point I get caught and hop into an enormous mechanical fortress and pop out through the ground slash ceiling of my fake future london to start smashing the shit out of the real london all the while the woman who literally travelled through time is like damn i'm dying and now my bf and i cant even have a nice last date. Anyway Clive is peak and he should have faced zero consequences for this. But Bill Hawks needs to die ASAP.

Leonard Church. The misogynist of all time. He loved his wife who he constantly referred to as a horrid bitch so much. He loved his daughter who he neglected and emotionally abused by comparing her to the impossible standard of her dead mother soooo much. He loved himself so fucking little that he tortured himself to create an AI out of himself and then he tortured the AI to try to create a new version of his wife out of his own memories. The neglect and emotional abuse of his daughter is continuing in a big way throughout this tbh. Then he accidentally tortures his AI self too much to the point where AI him loses his memory and his fake-ass AI wife who despises him now for what he did has to kidnap him from himself and now he's just back to being a huge asshole who calls his wife a horrid bitch all the time. And then he can eventually develop a conscience and start to remember more and more (and cause irreversible trauma and brain damage to wash at one point in there oops) and then even though he still doesn't remember her, he can team up with his daughter to track down his original, human self to stop him from continuously committing war crimes and human rights violations in his efforts to resurrect his wife. and he can finally put his wife who he calls a bitch to rest. I'm not gonna say I love you... I'm gonna say... I forget you. I'm letting you go. And then he can die pathetically as a human while his better AI version sticks around with his daughter who he still doesn't really remember for a while until he eventually has to sacrifice himself as well. And ain't that just a bitch.

1. Star Wars - Kylo Ren: i've related to him since I first laid eyes on him in tfa. the trans symbolism, the hating your dad bit, I was like dang he's me fr. he's as close as i've got to a comfort character.

2. Star Trek - Captain Jean-Luc Picard: (yeah i'm a trekkie lol) i totally had a crush on this guy growing up. he isn't even my type, but the overflowing confidence was new for me in a character.

3. Interstellar - Cooper: idk how but my brain managed to over-empathize with what this poor man had to go through. to this day, if i think about/watch the movie there will probably be tears.

4. The OA - Buck Vu: trans king!!!! loved seeing myself in a series. seeing him deal with legitimate trans tm issues but get to escape into a fantastical sci-fi feverdream was so good. also his actor is so cool and went on to play a character in Star Trek too haha

5. The Orville - Commander Bortis: seeing the story of a parent going through the process of non-acceptance to complete acceptance of their child was so powerful. the fact that opening his mind for his child's best interests ended up making him like the very group he used to hate was so satisfying. especially in the sick little "fuck u for having backwards thoughts, but now u found out u actually were repressing feelings for them all along" way.

6. Alien - Ellen Ripley: do i need to clarify why?

7. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Hal 9000: my introduction to ai characters and the possiblity of their humanity. (even the dark side of it)

8. Uglies - Tally Youngblood: kind of a watching your hero become the villain character. this series was my favorite ya book series growing up. i saw myself in her and continued to even after everything that happened. which honestly just goes to show how authentic of a character she was written to be.

9. Game of Thrones - Daenerys Targaryen: what a girlboss. i'm a huge dragon nut so of course if a character's symbol is dragons, i'm instantly drawn to them. i support her and her manslaying agenda. (until the last season)

10. The Walking Dead - Hershel Greene: i fell hook line and sinker for this guy's rough on the outside, soft on the inside characterization. he's such a random character for me to have ended up enjoying so much, but to this day he's my fave of the series.

just the quick reactions i have while reading the chapter! updated as i go. i'm making a separate post for translation-related things, but that'll be posted when i finish the whole chapter

so for artem/mc interactions, he feels normally protective and careful of her but the awkwardness is still there he doesn't know if she's mad at him TT (immediately blocking her from view in the car!! and realizing now that he was so shocked because things were awkward between them!!!) also i'm gonna note his reasons for taking the case as close enough to the post-ch9 predictions

hmm artem's acting being SHIT in this chapter. clearly he can act when he wants to, so i'm interpreting this as him thinking the prankster is such a clown that he can half-ass this performance xDD

vyn on leave of absence w/o informing us... they really ARE functioning separately omg

also this guy thinking he has leverage over them with vyn. LMAO. i'm starting to see why vyn was so cruel with him in that screenshot

the contrast of his appropriate distance at the detention center vs his insistent closeness when they seek out jonah zahn... add that to the theme of closing the distance from the first year of cards... nice nice very nice

oh nooo )): jerome is like 100% framing felicia securely for this case. kind of ironic because he told her to go through all the trouble of making a show out of it to ensure justice for her husband, but then he went through so many hoops to frame her instead... also tot is kinda interesting in just how much public opinion affects how the cases play out. here felicia was told having the "curse" cause a stir was the only way to catch the true culprit, but another common thing in stories is the harassment that rosa and artem face as attorneys for high-profile cases... another thing to think about. court of public opinion and whatnot

this is suuuuch a fun question yippee

toji: his entire piglet era was pretty repugnant, but he hurt himself with that first and foremost and he's in recovery now love and light

shuichi: taking advantage of/facilitating the spread of the app, which endangered literally all of tokyo and enabled the machinations of the very people who put him and all the other clones through hell, but also was inevitable so like 🤍 vriska moment + i don't think he should be judged that harshly for it. he's DEFINITELY killed someone though, almost certainly more than one person. also considering he fights with a non-app weapon, he's like, 100% severely injuring other players on a fairly regular basis but 🤍 he's allowed to do that. he gets both a girlboss pass and a 'loves his baby brother' pass, in addition to the neurodivergent and a minor card, which adds up to him being a perfect blameless darling actually 🤍. also outing claude to babs' would have been pretty fucked up if she didn't literally deserve it

duo: holy SHIT. what he puts shuichi through in faking his kidnapping through chapters 7/8, then The Confrontation & staged abandonment in 8, and then by chapter 9 exposing him as a clone to CLAUDE of all people. just like, the way he treats shuichi in the main story (and likely other loops as well if the yog dungeon loop is any indication), very deliberately manipulating his emotions, is... disturbing. all to maneuver him into actions THAT SHUICHI GLADLY WOULD HAVE DONE IF HE'D JUST ASKED. like, you examine it and you can understand where he's coming from! but the fact that he genuinely loves his brother & Does All That to Help and doesn't seem to be acting out of resentment for him at all just makes it more disturbing imo, even if it does arguably make it slightly less Morally fucked intentions-wise. like there's something about a patronizing sort of callousness, especially to that extreme, that's just like Worse to me than a callousness borne from plain old resentment. (you have to wonder who he's even modeling this behaviour from 😶). but then you think about the Genius role he's trying to emulate, and why he's trying to emulate that role and it's like... what other way was there for this to unfold lol. cainbaiting aside, there's also his tendency to set off Exceptions in populated areas, which i think would literally be a war crime, but he gets a baby pass for that one 💛. (ADDING THIS AS I WRITE BABS' SECTION) hey actually how much of what went down in chapter 8 did duo deliberately engineer

cullen: creating life frankenstein-wise alongside bertro & aisaac i GUESS 🙄. f to breke or w/e but she was literally playing house with her brothers, baby pass 💙. also she wasn't especially nice to him i GUESS, but like... from WHOM exactly is she supposed to learn the value of life lol? let alone treating the life you create with the consideration it deserves? it's obvious where she's modeling that behaviour from! baby pass, and if you say anything bad about her i kill you in real life 💙

bertro: having a frankenstein moment as well 🙄. also dropping the moon on tokyo in an attempt to permanently kill literally everyone, but like. it's quite likely memphis tennesse manipulated him into doing that, and even if not you LITERALLY cannot blame him.

avi/aisaac: frankenstein again, but aside from that. complicated question. at the very end of chapter moon, it was set up that aisaac has been like... enforcing the facility's continued control over the other Geniuses, but to my understanding, that was dropped in his debut chapter. it's still true in my heart though. but another thing that's true in my heart is that the aisaac that would have acted as the facility's enforcer isn't the same ai that the original isaac (avi) created. aside from that, he seems to have like... SERIOUSLY fucked some people up mentally? tenuous baby pass until further notice

arc: straight up war crimes! but their mom asked them to really niceys and they feel reallyyyy bad about it sooooo.... they still are willing to literally torture people outside of those circumstances but it's REALLY funny. to me. the neurodivergent and a minor card does not excuse them being catholic however :/

babalon: another holy SHIT, in much the same vein as duo's. the sheer destruction wrought on the walled-in wards aside, bc it's not clear how much of that the finishers were directly responsible for & moreover because it was inevitable/deliberately engineered by the people actually holding the cards. 😬 (edits duo's section). and also because she was right! but her manipulation of the protag and especially arc, who she had to have known wouldn't be able to bear being responsible for the destruction she was planning in addition to the destruction she had outright asked them to cause- the fact that she manipulates them for that reason, specifically to absolve them of responsibility. going so far as sacrifice azathoth- one of her other children, more helpless than either arc or the protag- specifically to unbalance them. the scene where she STABS HERSELF ON BOUNDLESS TAIL... if the protag were an actual character that probably would have been one of the MOST traumatizing things to happen to them. babs was the MOST impactful antag in the game to me, and she was horrifying as she was sympathetic. very interesting compare/contrast to duo now that i think about it.

3 male characters I love:

Kaname Date, I'm usually not a fan of the pervy character in things, but Date works so well because 1) He thinks all these things and makes comments but he never actually does stuff to people to make them uncomfortable, and 2) It's not his defining characteristic, he's so much more than horny. Like he's a great detective, he cares about his peers and wants to keep them safe, he's a great father figure even if he doesn't really know what he's doing, he's just such a great character. Also Greg Chun's performance is 👌👌👌

Kuruto Ryuki, *slaps roof* this boy can fit so many mental illnesses. I love this boy but goddamn he is a filthy liar whenever he says "I'm fine". But his story was so engaging and you really feel for him when it clicks into place. Like I've been giving the game a second playthrough with the knowledge of the twist and wow so many scenes hit different. Also, this is the first time I've heard Stephen Fu in a big role (The only other time I've heard him is Douma from KNY and he's only appeared a couple of times so far) and wow, I really wanna hear more of his work because his performance was incredible.

Pewter, I dunno he dresses like a fruity Pokémon villain and he's got an awkward yet charming personality. Not to mention, his story in the right path of the first game made me feel so bad for him... Like damn, just let this man be happy please, he deserves it. Also, I know I'm a broken record, but Sean Chiplock's performance, his delivery on the weirder lines are so funny (Yes I am thinking about the chairs line, how did you know?)

3 female characters I love:

Aiba, I fucking adore Aiba. She's the best. I love how she's the straight man to Date's shenanigans IRL but when they're in somniums, Date is the straight man to her shenanigans, I love her excitement whenever she sees bugs, I love how she knows Date so well she can manipulate him into being a better fighter, I love her lil jelly hamster form, I love Erika Harlacher's performance, I just really, really love Aiba.

Mizuki Date, I don't even know where to start with Mizuki... She's honestly one of the best written child characters I've seen in a game. And this poor girl has been through so much in both games but her route in the first game had me sobbing buckets. Not to mention, Corrina Boegetter's performance, they really knocked it out of the park for every single facet of Mizuki's personality. Also they genuinly managed to sound like a twelve year old, that's impressive all by itself.

Shizue Kuranushi, Listen... I am not immune to hot women voiced by Allegra Clark, okay? I'm only human. But seriously... Her design, her personality, her dedication to her co-workers, her office and the funny interactions that come from all the stuff she just doesn't throw away, and the fact that's somehow simultaneously a girlboss and a cringefail milf???? Impressive. She has the range, darling.

Also, quick shout-out to Tama, I adore her and her crazy laugh so much

3 romantic ships I love:

Kaname Date/Hitomi Sagan, god those two are so cute, really bummed they barely interacted in the sequel...

Kaname Date/Kuruto Ryuki, Date has two hands. But seriously, the admiration Ryuki has for Date and the way they watch out for each other is really sweet

Iris Sagan/Amame Doi, cute bubblegum colours but also they have each others backs and they always have fun hanging out with each other

There was another ship I wanted to add but it's spoilery and a mutual was considering potentially checking out the series so I thought it would be best to leave it out. But if you've played the first game, you can probably guess who it is.

3 platonic dynamics I love:

Kaname Date/Mizuki Date, I mean... Chances are if you've been following me for a while you know that I am just a huge sucker for family dynamics. And the dynamic of adopted father/daughter viewing each other as their real family but being too embarrassed to admit is something I adore.

Kuruto Ryuki/Tama, I love these two so much. I love how IRL Ryuki is just so done with all of Tama's dirty jokes and then in somniums Tama is so done with all of Ryuki's weird suggestions and skits. But also it's their concern for each other, you can tell they're partners. I feel like the best example of this is when Tama insists that Ryuki goes to the hospital no matter how much he protests, like... She just wants him to be safe and healthy...

Ota Matsushita/Mayumi Matsushita, god the Ota route destroyed me when I played through it but seeing them as a family getting through their issues was so sweet. I won't go into detail because it's personal but a few months ago I went offline for a while because of a family emergency and it's because of similar situation to Mayumi. So yeah, playing that hit hard.

3 favorite moments in canon:

The ending scenes of both games. If you know, you know.

Again, I wanna avoid spoilers but the Annihilation Route interrogation. Holy shit that scene was incredible.

The final scene in the final Somnium of Nirvana Initiative. Just... Goddamn that hit hard and the delivery of the "I have no regrets!" Crushed me.

I honestly can't think of any headcannons off the top of my head... And I've been typing this response for way longer I intended... Sorry...

3 least favorite things about it:

Some of the somniums can have some obscure logic but like... Not in the way that you proud when you figure it out, but more angry in a "how the hell was I supposed to figure that out?" Kinda way.

I really hate how Ryuki and Tama just got kinda shoved to the side halfway through Nirvana Initiative. Like they stole the show for a lot of their scenes and then once the Mizuki Route started they barely appeared and when they did, they weren't really shown in the best light, especially Ryuki. Granted there's a plot reason for this but still... It's disappointing. If there's an AI3, I hope they get more screentime.

I feel like Tearer really didn't get enough screentime in Nirvana Initiative, especially when unmasked. Like c'mon this is the main antagonist, give us more of him! Especially considering his entire backstory, that's a lot of really interesting stuff to build off of! Also just... I wanted to hear more of Billy Kametz' villainous performance. It was rare to hear him in those roles but he was so damn good in them.
