Havr you seen The New Yorker article Is Harry Styles A Movie Star?

When I reblogged the quote, I hadn't realised it was a new article. I thought it was from a similar Vulture article.

The points about Harry's acting were interesting. Whatever his strengths and weaknesses as an actor are - we haven't seen him light up the screen like a movie star in his film roles so far - like we know he can light up the screen as a musician. Like the article says he seems to have chosen roles where something slightly different was required. But it does leave real questions about him as a movie star. And for someone whose been saying 'Harry performances in music videos are super uneven and he has a specific skill set and outside that he doesn't always connect with the camera' for ages - I'm really interested in him as an actor.

I did think the aside about Larry was truly absurd - although in a different way from the Vulture article (where it was more in depth and about fans). The underlying assumption of that paragraph is that homophobia isn't real now and there are no impacts of coming out. Therefore the only explanation why Harry might be drawn to this is as some sort of marketing ploy.

This quote also drove me up the wall: "Tom, trapped in a period of repressive gender norms, might have thrived in the more permissive era that gave us Styles in a sequinned jumpsuit."

For two reasons - the first is of course about Harry and that I don't think Harry's jumpsuit shows the permissiveness of our era - but the boundaries of that permissiveness. A point underlied by the fact that there were plenty of performers in sequins in 1950s Britain - queer spectacle is not new and has been shaped by homophobic society - it's not incompatible with it.

I also hate centering what Harry Styles wears in the question of what Tom's life is like now. Working-class British queer men who want some form of success and stability will find their queerness easier now (although success and stability would be harder to obtain). That's because they will know queer people in their communities, and their family will know queer people, and being queer won't get them fired from their job. Failing to understand the difference between queer people realities and the spectacle that is permitted is missing pretty much everything important.

He’s not sure what exactly he’s expecting, only that his subconscious is screaming at him that it has to be heartbreaking, that it has to be torturous.

Instead, what Donnie is subject to is a full thousand hours’ worth of Jupiter Jim and Lou Jitsu crossover fanfiction. More than one part in the series. Spanning well over a million words.
