1. from Life After Death: “I’m so tired of death,” Xingchen said, his voice wobbling. “I’m so tired of it. You, and a-Qing, and then Xue Yang, and I did nothing to deserve you and a-Qing back, and I never looked for…but he’s here and I can’t stand the thought of losing him. All my struggling, all my searching for answers and closure, everything I ever said about justice, and that’s what it comes down to.” He bowed his head lower. “Xue Yang dying would rip something out of my heart that I can’t bear to lose. Not now.”

Song Lan let out a slow exhale. :I know,: he said again.

“I’m sorry,” Xingchen said.

:Xingchen,: Song Lan said, :I’ve known that, or something near it, since I made the decision to bring him back to life.: He swallowed hard. :You loved him.:

“I don’t want to,” Xingchen said, “but I don’t know how to stop.”

2. from the devil drives: “Bringing a full complement of bodyguards would be too conspicuous,” said Khun Kinn. Khun Vegas smiled and Pete thought oh no. 

“I agree,” he said. “But there is room for a plus one. He knows my staff, and most of your bodyguards, but an unfamiliar face…” Khun Vegas’s eyes drifted very slightly in Porsche’s direction before moving back to Khun Kinn. 

Oh, no, Pete thought again, but with a little more despair this time.

“Take Pete,” Khun Kinn said.

Vegas’s gaze swept to Pete, flicked slowly over him from head to toe. “Isn’t he one of Tankhun’s?” he said. “He won’t be thrilled that you’re loaning out his bodyguard to me.”

“That’s not your problem.”

“Considering Tankhun,” Vegas said, “it actually might end up being my problem.” 

“Pete doesn’t go out as much as some of the other guards,” Kinn said, “so he’s less recognizable. I’m offering you one of our best. Pete’s competent, observant, and I trust him completely.”

Pete might’ve been more flattered if he hadn’t been very aware that he was getting thrown this first and foremost so that Vegas didn’t take Porsche and only secondarily because Kinn trusted him.

3. from post-canon vegaspete long(er) fic: “Let me get you some painkillers?” Pete said.

“I’ll get them myself,” Vegas snapped, but of course he still had to put his clothes back on, which was an ordeal all on its own when he was already like this. He ended up sitting on the toilet with his head down to control the dizziness, fighting back tears of frustration and anger. Pete fled (“I’m going to get you some painkillers,” he said, this time not a question) and Vegas sat there marinating in rancid self-loathing until he came back. 

He took the pills in silence and didn’t look at Pete hovering and radiating anxiety. He bit down on the urge to snap at him hard enough to taste blood and felt like a monster. 

A sexually frustrated monster. 

4. from et ipsi sunt jacula: “Your wound,” Gabriel said, removing his hands, “needs tending.” 

“And you, with your healer’s hands,” Lymond said. “Ille more suo victus pietate, nec sordes cavit, nec fetorum exhorruit.”

“I make no claims to the miraculous,” Gabriel said. “But such things come first and foremost to the faithful.”

“Accept Christ,” Lymond said, “and my deformities shall disappear. Deny him, and I am cast out of the body public. Is that it?” 

Gabriel knelt, beginning to remove the dressings. “You cast out yourself,” he said mildly. “If you refer to your convalescence…I am given to understand it is exhaustion and overwork that brought on your collapse. You drive yourself hard, my dear.” 

“I do what I must,” said Lymond. “Should I let my opponent set the pace, instead?” 

“Your opponent,” Gabriel said, setting the soiled bandages aside. Lymond made no move to pull away, head turned just slightly to retain view of him as he examined the wound, livid and angry. “Your metaphors are all of war.” He paused, leveling a clear gaze at Lymond. “Is it any surprise there should be casualties, when such is your approach?” 

“You made it so,” Lymond said, suddenly blunt. 

“Did I?” Gabriel asked, smiling very slightly. “From the beginning you greeted me with nothing but hostility. You decided that I was your enemy and have proven unshakeable in that conviction, for all I did to prove I have nothing but your best interests at heart.”

Lymond’s laugh was sharp as a blade. “My best interests, and Scotland’s too?”

5. from Redux: “Let’s watch something,” Xiao Xingchen said. “You can choose. I’ve–” he swallowed hard. “I’ve missed you.” 

“Yeah,” Xue Yang mumbled after another brief silence. “Same here.” He huffed a weak laugh. “Look what you’ve done to me. Made me a sap like you.” 

Xiao Xingchen pulled back just enough to kiss him on the forehead, making Xue Yang wrinkle his nose, and said, “there are worse things to be.” 

“Probably I’m some of those too,” Xue Yang said with a too-quick smile, but Xiao Xingchen let it pass, steering them over to the couch. Xue Yang fell asleep with his head on Xiao Xingchen’s shoulder within a few minutes, and shortly after slid down further to be curled up with his head on Xiao Xingchen’s lap instead. Xiao Xingchen’s chest ached with fondness.

At the same time, something tickled at the back of his mind, an uneasy twinge like he’d forgotten something important, and at the same time it was something he didn’t want to know.

Not sure if you already have written about this, but have you seen the Fire Island adaptation of Pride a nd prejudice (ahhh my delete button isn't working, sorry...)

I haven't, for petty and unfair reasons.

I'm sulking that even with Austen, who famously prioritizes the feelings and perspectives of women, who shows women interacting without men lots of times but almost never the reverse, the cool queer adaptation we get is m/m rather than f/f. I would ritually sacrifice kittens for a decent P&P adaptation with f/f Darcy/Elizabeth but no.

I'm flattered, but I'm not sure I'll write fanfic for this fandom.

For one thing, I'm less comfortable with fanfic that takes place in modern settings (in terms of both writing and reading). And for another, I'm not invested enough in the setting and canon to want to write fanfic. I think I might diverge from how some people do fandom in that regard, because I know there are some people who can write fic while having a very singular focus on one character or ship, without being invested in the work as a whole. But even if I'm focusing very narrowly on the character or couple in question within the fanfic itself, I still feel the need to have some broader interest in or appreciation of the source material, because creative writing means mentally spending time in that setting. And writing this idea in particular would require a lot of outside engagement with the setting and other characters, which I'm not really inclined to do.

Also... there's a lot of fraught stuff wrapped up in this pairing for me right now, such that fandom discussions about it have me feeling a bit skittish. It's hard to know beforehand what'll trip me up. So I think I'd rather just not invest creative energy in it, at this point. (Especially because I'm quite busy right now and don't really have time for fanfic, period.)

Fic Ask Game: Favorite Fic Lines

Hello people. So, I got some sudden inspiration for this little game, which goes hand in hand with the KinnPorsche Fanfic Comment Event a little bit, in my opinion: Share the lines of fics that have brought a big emotional reaction out of you. It can be anything, from sadness to happiness to horniness to anything in between. Lines that have stayed with you, no matter how long ago you read the fic. I believe our writers deserve a little praise in these trying times, don't you think? So, for me, some of them are the following: 1) "The rib hurts so much more now that someone else knows about it." - drank every scar, by @ginnymoonbeam - Tbh, I'd have to put the whole fic in here, but this is the line I tend to think of whenever the fic comes to mind. Rereading it now to find the line made my eyes water, it's so fucking visceral and perfect and I love it so much. Once again, thank you so, SO much for writing it and sharing it with the world ❤️ 2) "Vegas’ violence is unpredictable, painfully personal, and utterly, tragically ineffectual.

Pete forgives him all of it." - Civil Hands, by @ameliarating - I can't count the times I went feral over both Civil Hands and Deep Dive. As a fan of Pete, both of those fics mean the world to me, and this specific line has been on my mind since the moment I read it. I love how it showcases Vegas' effect on Pete's worldview, how Vegas made him break his own rules, and how he came to accept it, because it's him. Incredible writing, I love it so fucking much❤️ 3) "He’d rather be marked as disposable, he’d realized, than erased as invisible.

There was something bitter about realizing that he’d been both." - Once You Are Real, by @veliseraptor - Lise chose this for the summary and it's such a perfect choice. I think it's the reason I chose to read the fic in the first place. I am very emotional when it comes to the concept of Pete finding out he was forgotten, and this fic does an amazing job with it. I keep returning to it a lot, I love it to death. Painful in it's brilliance, I can't recommend it enough. 4) "“I don’t know,” Pete said unsteadily. “I don’t know. How could I know what that feels like? I’m not that kind of person.” He pulled against Vegas’s grip, and got nowhere. “You make my teeth ache. You make the world bright, like it’s real. It hurts. It’s hurt since I met you, but that means I can never forget I’m alive." - even the clearest water, by @luckydicekirby What a fic. The concept, the lines, the execution, it all deserves praise until the end of time. Pete's answer to Vegas' "Do you love me?" will always remain in my head as one of the best things VP-related I've ever read and ever will read in my life. I loved this so fucking much, I will never get over it ❤️ 5) "“And now you have nothing,” Kinn says. “As I said, a dumb move.”

“Wrong again,” Vegas says. “I now have something you don’t.”

“Oh?” Kinn doesn’t hide the way he rolls his eyes. “Massive hospital bills? Bed sores?”

“Happiness.”" - Your Power Over Me, by @wisteria-daydreamer - A very special shout out to my lovely friend who's written one of my favorite Kinn&Vegas fics I've ever had the pleasure to read. When this line came, I literally gasped out loud, it left me speechless. The way Kinn's POV is written was marvelous and the whole conversation he had with Vegas was incredible. Check it out if you crave some good Kinn&Vegas fics, it's very, very good. Disclaimer: I have so many fics and authors I love and I've made that clear to both them and my followers in the past. My brain could only handle doing 5 for this, but I absolutely have more than 5 that I'm obsessed with. Maybe one day I'll do a Part 2, I'll see how it goes in the future. I've noticed that, probably due to a desire to alleviate the grim nature of the original, many xuexiao fanfic writers opt to focus on (twisted or fluffy) romantic feelings of the characters. The emphasis ends up being on their romantic / platonic / sexual attraction rather than their incredibly juicy ideological contest and the antagonistic tension mixed with intrigue that Xue Yang shows towards Xiao Xingchen. Basically, there is too much 'lovers / froends' and not enough 'enemies' in their enemies - to - lovers / friends story. (I'm not criticising that. I'm a sucker for their mushier side too. But I'm equally a sucker for a good brutal battle of creeds.)

So let me fill this gap by describing how DELICIOUS the exploration of the 'you're my enemy and u SUCK and your worldview is RIDICULOUS but I LOVE rotating you in the microwave testing the limits of your resolve' aspect is or can be. I'll use some moments from the show / novel that I find striking in this regard.

XXC is very kind but lacks the worldly experience to be spot - on empathetic (as others have pointed out). He's also rigid to a fault. This is a VERY unpopular interpretation of mine but I believe he can be selfish / negligent in his goodness - he sheds caution about possible repercussions on his near ones in his mission to fight evil. He was smart enough to figure out the Chang massacre and trace it to XY. He knows XY is incredibly vengeful and creative in his vengeance. He's had experience with powerful people who will obstruct justice. Yet he goes ahead with prosecuting XY even when Jin Guangshan acts shady and uncooperative. Didn't he consider that this might put a target on his well - known partner Song Lan ?

Welp, then the Baixue bloodbath happens and XXC very understandably blames himself. I know we like to say it wasn't his fault, and of course it technically wasn't, but he did commit a grave error in not thinking through the consequences. It could be a miscalculation, negligence or even cavalier tunnel - vision, depending on your opinion. But anyway, XXC's morale is shattered and as others (like ameliarating) have said, he determined to never end up harming others in his quest for righteousness again.

XY wiped out Baixue for revenge, but also to kill XXC's hopes and vision, again also mentioned by others. May be a stretch, but it could be XY's way of saying 'hah, you don't care to understand why the world is as awful as it is, and then blame ME for doing shitty things to live it up in a shitty world. So let me show you how things actually work, and why my existence and lifestyle are valid.' It's like a really fucked up method of self - affirmation for XY. (Just in case - I am neutral on XY's actions. The novel doesn't give us much insight into his thoughts, so I'll withhold judgement on the nature vs. nurture debate about XY. But he's definitely an interesting character).

Then XY starts infiltrating XXC's life in Yi City. Why does he stick around after healing ? I like to think it's initially because he's a) taking advantage of XXC's generous freebies cuz why not and b) wants to torment him, yes, but he's also very very curious about XXC. Maybe it's because XXC's still out here trying to do good when many people would've either quit and hardened their hearts, or been broken irreparably. So XY think's he'll get both schadenfreude and try to find out why this dumbass saved a highly suspicious dying man and continued on his goody goody quest instead of learning his lesson. The lesson XY tried to teach him. Maybe XXC's whole deal makes XY wonder how his life would be if he'd acted nicer and more socially acceptable. Would it have saved him any pain ? Would he have had true allies then ? Did he choose a life of callous crime because he is weak - willed and 'inferior' unlike the seemingly unbreakable superiority of XXC ?

So he makes XXC kill on 'night - hunts'. Perhaps to prove that XXC got manipulated into doing harm cuz he's dumb or full of hubris and refuses to wisen up, refuses to become more cynical and wary of people. This ties back into Baixue too. Also I think the book mentions the victims are residents who mocked / cheated XXC ? If that's true, it's like XY is 'introducing' XXC to taking bloody revenge just like XY did on the Chang clan and others who crossed him / his pals. Like he's enacting teaching XXC 'look, if you keep up the good deeds, eventually you'll meet someone who ruins you so you destroy that hope for humanity and become just like me. Your way will always end in disaster, and therefore I'm justified in living like I do.'

Of course, in the end XY realises that XXC's drive to better society was his way of coping with the harsh reality of humans, especially after being ousted from BSSR's mountain. XXC didn't want to live in a sordid world. Meanwhile XY's coping mechanism was to extort the sordid world for all he wanted.

There's a tiny moment in CQL where, after the fake night hunt slaughter, XXC walks past a smirking XY and his arm brushes XY's sleeve, whose grin grows larger. It's like XY's relishing in XXC so casually touching and hanging about him totally unawares. Also he's horny for XXC's combat skills.

So yeah. Antagonist obsessed with corrupting his enemy, wrapping him around his finger, but not willing to let go. He ended up being totally down to bask in XXC's obstinate kindness despite that being the very thing he wanted to disprove and destroy.

XXC hesitates to kill XY after the reveal. What does he get from XY? Maybe it was reassuring that someone as hard - hearted and self - centred as his friend was willing to stick around in no man's land with him. It's soothing because it makes it seem like the world isn't that cruel, that perhaps the potential for good exists in people, hence helping XXC cope with his existential anxiety. He has to hold on to that hope even as his friend's identity is revealed, else there's nothing left for him since he can't bear to live in a world of evil and exploitation.

Why didn't XY move on after XXC's suicide ? If all he wanted was acceptance and shelter, he could've found so many other options. No, he was obsessed with XXC cuz he thought that if someone perfectly willing to kill him in the past over morals hesitated to kill him in the end, it must be an actual stable love. Where else, he thinks, would be find someone who loved him enough to not kill him despite them being such hostile opposites by character and circumstance ? Lots of people could love him cuz they agreed with his worldview or found it / him expedient. Who would love him even when their entire identity and misery opposed it ?

At some point it occurred to Non  - maybe the fifth time he vainly tried to nudge White towards the horror section of the comic book store - that he was pretty genre-savvy when it came to this stuff. He knew what he was: Phi Tai Hong. The most feared of ghosts. What he didn’t know was what it was about cohabitating with White’s soul in White’s body that kept the ravenous bloodthirst at bay. He’d never watched or read or heard of anything like this. At first he speculated that his death wasn’t unexpected enough to count, but even if it made him a complete idiot, he really had believed he was going to make it out of that shitty casino and go on to prove everyone wrong. He still sometimes expected to wake up from all this as if it was just one long bad dream. It seemed impossible that he could finally be that ready to fight for his life and it could just be snatched from him.

Let's see if I can get a few more of these done before my meeting, haha. It's not enough time to start anything bigger! Next we've got a couple little anthology books for zaatar/ameliarating, one for the silmarillion, one for the batfamily, and one for kinnporsche. All of those suggest SUCH fun aesthetics on their own, though I confess that with batman especially, I had trouble narrowing it down to WHICH of my dark fabrics and papers deserved to play, haha. I ended up breaking out the silk moire bookcloth for some classy silmarillion flavor and a rad brown-and-tan geometric fabric for kinnporsche. And for the batfamily, I definitely think the star is that gold-on-black cotton paper, it's so luxurious, one of my all-time faves for boxes or endpapers

Undercut

you already know all about every fic I'm writing, you just want a special excerpt, don't you, that's what's going on here

anyway for those of you who aren't my wife and aren't aware of everything i'm writing because i talk about it too much, this is the one where post-canon pete gets hurt in a mission he's on with porsche and vegas very much freaks out about it. also digging into the ways that pete still low-key sees himself as expendable and his life something he can and maybe even should give up for other people, which vegas is like NO THAT IS INCORRECT, STOP IT and intellectually i think pete knows that but subconsciously...

fun getting to confront issues of self-preservation and also vegas's anxiety and desire to wrap pete in a blanket burrito and make sure nothing bad happens to him! which is not what pete wants, at all. pete thinks vegas is overreacting.

it's mostly fun plotless angst/whump but with a little dash of particularly pete's issues in there, because i can't write whump without getting a little psychological about it.

“I’m sorry,” Pete said. “It didn’t go right. I didn’t, I was supposed to–”  “Hey, no, baby, shh,” Vegas said, alarmed by Pete’s obvious and rapidly mounting distress. “It’s fine. Like I said, not your fault. Somebody fucked up but it wasn’t you.” “Okay,” Pete said, though he didn’t really seem reassured. “Don’t be mad.”  “I’m not,” Vegas lied.  “Yeah you are,” Pete said. “I can tell when you’re mad.”  “Don’t worry about it,” Vegas said. “I’m not mad at you, I promise.” Not really, anyway. Not mostly. Maybe he would be later, but right now he was too relieved that Pete was alive to be angry at him. He could be angry at plenty of other people instead.  “Okay,” Pete said, though he still seemed dubious. Vegas pulled gently on his hair and watched his eyes float closed, tension slipping out of his expression with his quiet sigh.
