"Kaleidoscope" is the official name I've given to my Kwami Swap Amensia AU (Or Ghostbug AU) because it was getting to be a bit wordy in the tags lol! "Kaleidoscope" is the name of the fic for the AU and what it'll be posted as to AO3 when I'm ready to share it

It's in reference to the optical toy - typically a tube or telescope that contains at least two angled mirrors and is filled with coloured glass beads or something similar. Each time you turn the kaleidoscope, different patterns are formed from the beads shifting and making different reflections in the glass.

Kaleidoscope AU holds a similar principle. All of the same pieces are in play, but something has shifted to cause a new pattern in the timeline.

Adrien is still a Miraculous holder, but he has the earrings.

Marinette and Adrien still had a misunderstanding on their first meeting at school, but it doesn't get cleared up immediately with no umbrella scene.

Alya is still a fan of superheroes and runs the Ladyblog, but Marinette is often her cohort in the running of it.

Akumas such as Stoneheart still happened, but with slightly varying events since Crimson Bug has been operating as a solo hero.

Speaking of being a solo hero, Crimson also almost gave up during this timeline's events of Origins. There just so happened to be someone who gave him courage when he needed it most. (Sounds similar as to what happened to a certain other ladybug holder hmm..)

ok first, before i forget, i don't remember sending that eris ask in but i know it was the night i got drunk and couldn't stop thinking about him lol eris has me by the throat and thank u if you actually write one of my ramblings 🙏

about the tier list, you not liking reading major character death or unhappy ending but like writing it is so funny but also terrifying please have mercy. some of them were surprising but others i expected like i knew dark fic was going to be s tier because you write the best ones. i guess it changes a bit from what you usually write to what you like to read about

turns out i can't send images on asks on anon so 💔 but i can just do a rundown of mine:

- s tier is: slow burn, mutual pining, friends to lovers, arranged marriage, fake relationship, fluff and angst

- a tier: sharing a bed, enemies to lovers, unrequited love, established relationship, huddle for warmth, pwp, soulmate

- b tier: dark fic, in vino veritas, fix it fic, hurt comfort, first kiss

- c tier: amensia, abo, sex pollen, missing scenes, bang or die, humor

- then there's a special row for canon divergence

- and the ones i don't really like are: prangancy fic, baby fic, major character death, love triangle, unhappy ending, crossover, crack fic, body swap, high school au

i want to clarify that unrequited love is pretty high but i usually like it when it turns out not to be unrequited because i like the momentary angst but i like an happy ending

also the aus are hard to rank because what i usually like and read about is already fantasy or magic so they're not really relevant. and they left out the best ones like demon au or vampire au

and the canon divergence has its own row because when there's a oc there's going to be changes but i don't like when those changes are to the point of me barely recognizing the acotar world yk and i don't like when certain things are changed but i don't mind with others (like some fics don't have nyx), i guess that's king of personal for each person. also in other fandoms i tend to like all the characters that end up dead somehow so i like when they're alive or when the fic kind of ignores some of the main plot of the show because it completely changed the dynamics of it at some point or killed basically everyone off, being a fan of anime is torture

also i just read the dark!rhys fic and i love it so much, i need more of him in my life. do you have any more dark rhys fics planned? i like that sjm made him nicer in the books and all but the high lord of the night court being a little darker and leaning more into the morally grey just hits different - 🧶

That’s a really good point, I completely forgot about demon/vampire/werewolf aus or the pirate ones? Those ones I would 100% read—especially vampire/demon ones because oh my gosh 😳😳🫣

I think maybe for a fandom that didn’t already have magic and royalty, then the magic and royalty au’s might be fun as a once-every-so-often sort of thing? But I don’t think they’d be a frequent read.

Okay so this is SO hard, but I'm narrowing it down to these ones that i've read/re-read recently:

I love amensia!fic so much, i could eat it with a spoon, i could have it for breakfast lunch AND dinner and still be hungry for supper. also this fic focuses on my favourite man in the world, damianos of akielos, and spina is a genius, so it has to take first place. it also features my favourite trope of all time, PINING WHILST MARRIED (i was raised on heyer novels and am incapable of changing at this point) and everyone should read it. this fic should have a thousand kudos, or, failing that, five hundred comments, so let's get it together, fandom

I really love Kallias as a POV character - he's a brutal romantic rather than idealistic one; he's a version of Jokaste that makes sense; he's what living with the consequences looks like. And this fic gets that - Leo puts it together so beautifully and so well that it makes me cry. I love this fic.

“You are from the south?” Auguste says, because what else do you say to a spymaster. 

Kallias nods. “Akielos.”

He doesn't seem inclined to say anything else, but Auguste is still jittery, still wants to talk, anything to stop thinking about the baths.

“Have you been in Laurent’s service long? Were you a courtier, before?”

“I was a slave,” Kallias says, in the same way men used to say to Auguste that they had served in the borders, or out at the archipelago. Auguste doesn’t know how to talk to slaves. But he does know how to talk to soldiers.

“I am glad you’re free of it,” he says simply. “Where?”

A little crinkle forms at the edge of Kallias’ mouth. “Ios.”

“The palace?” Kallias - sylph-slim, curling hair - the cheekbones - beautiful once, he thinks again.

The crinkle shows again. “Correct. In the household of the older prince.” 

“He must have been a brute,” Auguste said. “I saw what he did to Damen’s back.”

Kallias raises his eyebrows.

“Damianos-exalted,” Auguste hastily corrects. “I know ach- akielons like titles.”

“Yes,” Kallias says. “That’s it.”

Laurent slips back in. He’s white as a sheet, and Auguste hurries over to his side.

Hmmm I think yes but only if it resolved happily - I definitely couldn't end it on amensia, that's just too sad 😭

I read the InuKag amensia Purity fic, but unfortunately I got turned off by the fact that they made the source of conflict yet again Kikyo/the love triangle even though this was supposed to be post her final passing.

Maybe it’s just due to Sunrise beating a dead horse, but I’m so tired of the love triangle being used as InuKag’s main source of conflict and “obstacle.” There are so many other topics to explore on what they’d need to overcome such as the fact that they’re of two different races and two drastically different eras - is Kagome ready to leave her entire life and family behind for an era that only knows blood & pillage? Is Inuyasha comfortable with Kagome risking it all for him and exposing her to the prejudice of being with and potentially bearing a hanyou’s children? What about her safety? She’d be much safer in her own era wouldn’t she?

These are the things I wish a 3 year separation angst Kagome getting amnesia fic would explore, except I get the love triangle as InuKag’s main obstacle… again! (no offense to the author of said fic)

Well, I don't think I have read Purity yet, but I know for a fact not every trope will be everybody's cup of tea. Love triangles in general seem to be especially controversial among audiences and that's okay.

Personally, I don't mind Kikyo drama as long as it's well written and in character, because as you guys probably have noticed by now, I'm very opinionated about the love triangle and it makes me rather picky when it comes to fanfiction.

I totally understand being over it, though. Sunrise — and Takahashi herself, although admittedly in a smaller proportion — really did beat a dead horse. I totally agree that Inukag was a very nuanced pairing and, as such, the possibilities for conflict are endless, but never got explored to their full potential. Or at all, in some cases.

The obstacles you mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. We could keep listing complications all day long, be it sticking with specific canon facts only or creating entirely new generic situations, but many opportunities were wasted to favor the love triangle instead and that's undeniable.

However, I'd also argue that the reason this is such a recurrent fanfic theme is precisely because it left much to be desired in the original story. I, for one, have always thought the execution was frustrating and unsatisfying. Many things were left unsaid, many dimensions of the dynamic between Inuyasha, Kagome and Kikyo were swept under the rug or simply not explored because it wasn't convenient, even though it was absolutely necessary to do so.

This resulted in many misconceptions and misinterpretations within the fandom, not only of the characters involved but also of the story itself, which in turn has fed ship wars for ages. Then again, this was hardly unintentional. And I'm not talking only about the anime here. Sunrise just happened to be more shameless and unscrupulous about the whole thing.

I don't blame readers who avoid this kind of fanfic like the plague, but I also don't blame writers who feel the urge to fill in the gaps and "fix it", because I actually relate to that a lot.

In the specific case you brought up, I don't think that just because Kikyo died, Kagome's insecurities died with her. Some wounds take longer to heal than others. Some wounds seem to be healed until something or someone makes them bleed again. And more often than not, healing is a working progress rather than a linear path you take and then is done with. Falling into old habits, self doubting, self sabotaging, letting your anxieties and insecurities get the best of you even when you think you know better is only human nature. And Kagome is the most human character in Inuyasha.

If Kagome has lost her memories, it makes sense to me that she would need some reassuring every now and then, especially because getting these memories back eventually might very much feel like reliving them all over again, which can definitely be confusing, frustrating and heartbreaking.

Now, since this fanfic didn't do it for you, all I can do is sugest that you keep looking for the ones that will check your boxes. This is a very old fandom. Certainly someone has written a story that aligns with your needs at some point.

If you can't find any, then maybe it's time to create it, because I assure you that, somewhere, someone has the same craving as you. In case you don't feel comfortable writting something yourself, it's always a good idea to team up with someone who does.

Luckily, we've got plenty of talented writers in the fandom, and in my experience they're quite approachable. I'm positive you can find someone willing to beta your writing, work on this story with you as a partner or take your request as a comission.

aaaaammmmnesssiaa! Tell me about the amnesia!!

😊 okkkkk this is a story @mostlyimmortal plotted with me but tbh i have written very little of it, and it's a bit complicated so I don't want to over promise on chance of completion lol, but it feels like the kind of fic people were putting out early in fandom and I miss those!

Behind a cut cause I got ramble-y!!

So first, by calling it amensia fic I have fully given away what is meant to be a Twist. The fic would be Nicky is a Normal Man™️ who one day almost gets mugged when a dashing stranger appears and saves him and then Nicky is Insistent that he needs to thank this guy, who is otherwise edging to leave, and that man is Joe, and Nicky pursues him and they start to date.

One day, well into the relationship Joe unexpectedly goes missing.

The tl;dr reveal would be that Nicky is not a Normal Man, he is canon Nicky who, for handwavey angst and fanfic reasons, was having like brain-melting, debilitating symptoms recovering post TBI at Merrick's, and they realized what was triggering it was reminders of his life, and so he was essentially left to recover apart from the Guard, and Joe's initial edging to leave was worry he would re-trigger that, but when it seemed like Nicky was ok, Joe stuck around. With retrospect, you'd realize Joe had attempted to introduce him to Andy at one point earlier in the fic though, and Nicky got a terrible migraine, so that's why Joe has not confessed to that point. But then, like a mother lifting a car to save her child, Nicky manages to fully recover for Saving Joe purposes.

Some snippets:

“Hey, you got the time?” 

Nicky slows to a stop as he turns the corner to see a man in a dark jacket in front of him on the sidewalk. Nicky slides his phone out of his pocket to check.

“It’s half past –” Nicky looks up and stops. The man is now holding a gun low, near his chest, but pointed unmistakably at him. Nicky freezes staring at the barrel of the gun and, quite unexpectedly, gets a feeling of deja vu. 

<i>Like a scene in a movie,</i> his mind supplies.

“You’re not what I thought you’d be like at all, you know.”

“What do you mean?” Joe looks at him, eyes wide, expectant, and Nicky feels embarrassed, because this isn’t about to be anything profound.

“You just seemed so… shy when we first met. Nervous maybe.” 

“Oh.” Joe twists his mouth to the side and looks almost disappointed, but recovers quickly and says “Only because I liked you so much.”

“I’m having a bad day, but I don’t want to talk about it. Can I just hang out here? Is that ok?”

“Of course, yes. Come here.” 

He spreads his arms wide, and Joe doesn’t hesitate to fall into them, arms clutching himself as he burrows into Nicky’s hold and lets himself be held.

Nicky steps back after a time, ready to shift them to a more comfortable spot than the middle of his entry way. 

“Do you feel like doing anything in particular? What do you normally do to cheer yourself up on bad days?” 

To his horror, the question seems to bring tears to Joe’s eyes. 

“Oh, I’m sorry, ok, it’s ok.” 

Nicky ushers Joe over to the couch and tugs him back into his arms. Joe swipes at his eyes but doesn’t elaborate, and Nicky does him the courtesy of pretending he doesn’t notice. Eventually he sets some quiet music up to play on his phone, and they stay curled together until the sun sets, and the apartment grows dark.

The call log is blank besides one missed call from two days ago, the last time he’d seen Joe. He dials back the number.  

The line connects but it’s silent, just the faint hush of someone’s breath.

“...Joe?” Nicky whispers, improbable though it would be, then nearly drops the phone when an unfamiliar voice answers.

“Nicky?”

this is an unusual update post because i wrote about 19.5k total (great! impressive number!) but about 11.5k of that was stuff that i’m not going to talk about on tumblr (yet?) i’ve spent months waffling over counting misc stuff in my writing tracker and this month i finally wrote so much that it would be absurd not to

[COMPLETED] burning the world as we go, the critrole asawulf “fighting pits” oneshot, 2072 words total

another one for the list of “fics i write in a week and don’t overthink :)” and i’m happy with it. this came from a completely throwaway joke that i just grabbed and ran

another one from the list of “this fic was basically done but i refused to look at it for a few months :)” i’m happy to finish this, esp since it’d been a half year since i posted my last league fic (where does the time go). this was the last planned entry of this series and a little more serious so it took me forever to get the tone right. i still have a few jayvik ideas left so hopefully now the brain space is finally freed up for them!

at some point i started describing this as just “the critrole modern league AU” and that’s where it all went wrong! i think all the energy i initially wanted to put into this ended up going into the jayvik gamer AU fics, where it was much better suited anyway, so now i’ve got a loose outline for a more “standard” romcom rewrite (they’re still gamers) that could be fun
