Reading the newly-published Amy’s Choice original script, and!!! The Doctor's arc!!! I understand cutting back on it to better focus on the titular Choice of Amy, but the way the script uses the Doctor's self-hatred to really explore his feelings towards the Ponds and their relationship does feel balanced here, I wish more of it was left in!
As someone who loves the angle of the Doctor yearning to be worshiped and hating himself for it, I might have ulterior motive to wish this scene wasn't cut:
Tumblr media
But really, it's the way it shows the Doctor is slowly unravelling as his relationship with Amy and Rory is picked apart — one thing I'm not sure the episode fully got across is that the Dream Lord is picking on the Doctor first and foremost, and picking on the Ponds because it upsets the Doctor to know that he's hurting them.
Tumblr media
If only each episode just got a full hour runtime honestly!
Tumblr media
The next screenshot is good. “You’re my friends.” Of course! They both are! Of course he's insecure — of course he wonders, in Amy's grown-up married life, where the imaginary friend fits in. (After all, Martha and Donna got married promptly after leaving, and Rose kind of ended up the same.)
Tumblr media
But now that he's no longer insecure about their closeness excluding him, he's no longer so confident the TARDIS is real — a mirror to the way Rory no longer cares once he knows Amy would rather die than be without him.
This next scene is partially in the episode, but as much as I like the Doctor ignoring the Dream Lord, the Doctor's “Because they never see me again doesn’t mean I never see them” is everything for his Pond family vibes here — featuring inner turmoil. He does inevitably hurt his companions, but he always loves them, too.
Tumblr media
In the frozen TARDIS, they're actually dying, their organs and brains are shutting down, so the Doctor forces them to keep moving and repeat after him to keep them alive and he shouts how he loves them, because that's what matters to him, they are all that matter to him:
Tumblr media
Which makes Rory's inevitable demise in the next story so much harder! Honestly, I already been disappointed about the Hungry Earth deleted scene on YouTube where the Doctor is talking to Amy about how much he likes Rory, but hey, I see the love between these three in Season 5, and I love that we have so many scripts to affirm it.
If only each episode just got a full hour runtime so all this didn't have to be cut!!!
The script library, if anyone hasn't seen it. It used to mostly have recent stuff, but now it has a whole lot more! (Don't go there looking for Season 7 or 8 though.)

based on all the harsh criticisms i've made in posts above towards the "competing over amy" narrative, i should for all intents and purposes absolutely detest the episode 'amy's choice', but instead it almost reads like a full-on deconstruction. it feels self aware. the dream lord takes on the role of a narrator, a vector for the author's voice, not quite breaking the fourth wall but pressing up close against it, not quite hanging a lampshade but holding it over the light. it's... clever, and tricky, and i need to think about it more, but i'm genuinely leaning towards considering this the best episode of series 5 (so far) by a long shot.
themes and motifs. et cetera. a frozen world with no love or a small life ground into dust by the years? you can get what you want or you can just get old

Okay bitches, time for another round!
Doctor Who: Amy's Choice - here we go
English countryside, how lovely
AMY'S PREGNANT??!!
The urge to build the cottage in the sims is strong
What the actual fuck is happening? I don't want Amy to be pregnant and married to that lame bloke
WHO'S THAT RANDOM MAN AND WHAT HAS HE DONE TO POOR TARDIS
This episode is so confusing
The old people have eyes in their mouths. I don't like this.
This is all so wrong.
She chose Rory. I am not sure how to feel about this.
This was horrible. Never wanna see this episode again.

none of you fuckers understand Eleven like i do part 3
AND ANOTHER THING
Eleven is so full of self-hatred and most of you seem to forget that point
Amy's Choice was literally a manifestation of Eleven's insecurity, self-hatred and desperation
one of the very first things star says is that without some kind of stimulation, star would literally start hurting starself. The Dream Lord constantly insults star, and he makes such a big emphasis on Amy choosing what world she wants to be in because Eleven is so sure star is disposable
especially given the fact that The Dream Lord is literally all the darkest parts of star, all the parts that star bottles up, there's a lot rattling up in that 900-year-old brain that Eleven is trying to keep shut.
just look at how star reacts to Amy at the end. "But those things he said about you. You don't think any of that's true?" star immediately deflects and distracts her with Rory. star doesn't want to answer because star doesn't want her to worry.

Nothing too against Amy Pond (definitely a little-)
But Amy's Choice is one lf the few episodes that makes me actually believe she loves Rory- maybe also Pandorica Opens (she remade that man with all of her other favorite things)
But throughout the episode she's only touching Rory. Putting on his poncho, adjusting it later, staying closer to him when both Rory and the Doctor are knocked out, the whole "not wanting to be in a world without Rory" thing, etc.
In most episodes I find it hard seeing Amy's love for Rory, but I think thats just from how I express love for the people I know-
For me there are very few scenea between Amy and Rory that makes them feel like more than roommates or friends- this isn't to say that I see Amy loving the doctor more, she has a similar air or vibe to the doctor as she does to Rory (I'd call the three closer to a poly relationship if I had to with the way Amy acts the same to both most of the time)
But that might just be Amy's character, seeming to live her boys on the same level but in small moments she's showing just how important Rory is to her- just hard for me to see those moments. Their relationship has always felt clunky to me, rushed or just slightly off, like two puzzle peices that were forced to fit and are from different puzzle boxes. And the thing is, I know that the people working on Doctor Who can make a love story that I believe even if it doesn't use any of the love languages I know- The Doctor and River Song, Rose and the Doctor, the beginning of Rose and Micky. Actually Amy and Rory feels like a retelling of Rose and Micky but one where Rose isn't as interested in the doctor but still falls out of love with Micky- only we don't see the beginning of the story.
And now I'm just repeating myself- I would like someone to change my mind on this, I've seen so many posts of people loving Rory and Amy's relationship and seeing them together as amazing but I just can't. Someone help me out here, yeah?

Painting a few interiors from series 5! Definitely one of my favourite new who seasons, I originally planned to skip through just to find screenshots to work from and ended up watching most of the episodes!
Captions read: Amy's House - The Eleventh Hour; Liz Ten's Bedchamber - The Beast Below; Amy and Rory's Nursery - Amy's Choice; The Silurian Court - Cold Blood

Seriously though, Amy's Choice has some absolutely stellar comedy here, mixed in with a level of darkness Doctor Who rarely reaches. I mean:
DOCTOR: What do you do around here to stave off the, you know... AMY: Boredom. DOCTOR: ...self harm.
This is an actual fucking line in a Doctor Who episode. I am fascinated.

SO! WE'RE WATCHING AMY'S CHOICE! the episode where a lot of my questions about Amy -- her back-and-forth about Rory, her unfinished business vis-a-vis the Doctor's abandonment, her fear of growing up and emotional immaturity
And is it delivering on that premise? kind of
it definitely is one of my favourite concepts of this season, especially the old people/Eknodines! it's very invasion of the body-snatchers with the extra bit of not knowing what's real
fun times! but does it work beyond the neat concept?
