I've read a lot of ideas about what Danny's obsession is, but honestly not a lot about what Vlad's is.

So I give you: Vlad's obsession is not Maddie, but getting what he wants.

My explanation/head cannon:

When Vlad becomes a Halfa, it's a slow process of him dying of ecto-acne/irradiation. As opposed to Danny's death, that was a quick electrocution.

In Danny's moments of dying I always kind of imagined him panicking and in his moment of panic wondering if Sam and Tucker were okay. To then be followed up, by him realizing that ghosts are coming through the portal and that he "needs" to catch them, thus forming his obsession with "being the hero" or whatever you want to call it.

While Vlad was in the hospital, I imagine he would be having A LOT of feelings. Most of which would equate to "I want out" "I want Maddie" "I want to be healthy" "I want to strangle Jack for messing up and getting me put here" "I want to see my friends" "I want to be able to experience more before I die" ECT.

So upon him finally becoming a Halfa and "getting better" he then starts doing everything that he had been wanting to do.

He wants and needs money to accomplish most of his goals, so he makes a company and uses his powers to gain that money and power. ECT.

Maddie was never his obsession and neither was having a family. His obsession was "Getting what he wants" and since his morals were already a bit grey at the beginning, he had no problem becoming a bit of a villain to fulfill his obsession.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.

I was at a Palestinian solidarity gig last night & the one Palestinian artist who was going to perform had COVID so the organisers asked around to see if there were any Palestinians who'd like to say a few words instead.

A local guy who was born & raised in Gaza offered to speak. He started with "I'm an engineer. i'm not a poet or a politician. I don't... do public speaking… I had no idea what to say when I came up here. So i'm just going to tell you about the street I grew up on."

And then he did! He went down the street building by building. He told us about the ice cream shop on the corner, the grocery shop, the charity that supports people with intellectual disabilities. He told us about the people who he knew growing up, the families who still live in the different houses. He told us about the university buildings and about his friends who quit being accountants to start a band together. All on that street.

All of which is gone now, by the way. Bombed to dust.

one of the differences between good omens the show vs good omens the book that will always fuck me up is the post-bookshop fire scene. crowley goes from picking himself up, dusting himself off, accepting the loss of aziraphale and Just Driving Anyway to completely falling apart. i do get why people have gripes with it being changed so fundamentally, and i've thought about it a lot myself, but i've never been able to bring myself to get mad about it. i always circle back to how the book was written by two best friends. that drunken, wrecked, grief stricken scene was written in a post-pratchett world. he lost his best friend.

these books unbanned cards (unless otherwise stated) get you access to each library's complete libby/cloud library collection, no hoopla/kanopy/physical copies included.

ebook collections are expensive to maintain (many american libraries have annual fees for non-residents because of this) but because of an uptick in book banning (particularly brutal in mississippi last summer) larger libraries have opened their doors more, which is very kind of them!

i've used my seattle card for the last several months and their libby collection has about three times the books that my local library does, which is wonderful for accessing more niche titles or skipping a waiting list. would love to hear of similar ebook initiatives internationally!

i use library extension (firefox/chrome/edge compatible) to check all my collections (+ the internet archive) at once, works for several different countries highly recommend it.

spotify seems to be offering 15hrs/month of audiobook listening to premium subscribers and while that does seem useful if you're already paying and are after a new release with a long library waitlist, libraries are better for everything else.
