they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.

Recently it came to my attention that on tiktok and maybe other places but I think mostly on tiktok there's become this block party thing where people are mass blocking celebrities for not talking about social issues mostly Palestine. Firstly i just have to say block who ever you want and it's great that people are standing up for what they think is right, but what celebrity is making most of their money on social media? Why isn't there a don't stream these artists or watch these shows/movies thing why is it block these celebrities on social media? A guy said he was blocking Drake, and I'm sure it will upset him but that's a platform for him to talk to fans, if you are still streaming his music buying his merch going to his shows that how he makes money not social media. Again fully support people doing what they want but I think it could be more effective if you attack a different revenue stream depending on the person.

What is the blockout2024 movement?

The blockout2024 movement, also called the digitine (a portmanteau of the words digital and guillotine), is an online protest, where people are blocking celebrities and other rich or influential figures en masse, for a variety of reasons, including not speaking out about the situation in Palestine.

The movement started on May 6, the day of the Met gala, when influencer and internet celebrity Haley Kalil (who you may know as "haleyybaylee", her handle) went to the Met gala to interview attendees, in an elaborate dress, in which she videoed herself saying "let them eat cake", a quote often attributed (wrongly) to Marie Antoinette, when talking about starving people in france.

Tiktok user @/ladyfromtheoutside made a video, where she coined the term digitine, blocked Haley, then said "Vive la révolution!".

Not long after, many people then started commenting on how much alike the hunger games this was, with rich people paying $75,000 to dress up and party while many people across the globe are dying, and those who have enough wealth and influence to help are doing... Nothing. It did not help the celebrities cases that Palestine was belong bombed during the Met gala, and that the song 'Hind's hall' was also released on that day.

With the movement sparked, people started blocking any celebrities who had not spoken out for Palestine, and accounts started appearing, releasing lists of people to block each day (you can find these if you look up 'Blockout2024').

While some people have their doubts about whether or not this will actually work, it is likely too early to tell, and many celebrities buy followers, so it will be difficult to notice a difference. However, even regardless of the Palestinian genocide and wealth gap that celebrities are symbols of, it is likely healthy to block them anyway, as you are then not following someone who will only make you feel worse about the live you have, when theirs is only based on either generational wealth or luck.

Should I still block them if I don't follow them?

Yes, as then they can't advertise to you.

Should I block them all at once, or should I block them as the lists come out?

While both are useful, blocking based on the daily lists does have a bigger noticeable impact on the celebrities for them. However, do not let this stop you from blocking them whatever way you please.

Note: Haley has apologised, however if she didn't understand the impact of the quote in the first place, she is still extremely out of touch
