finally actually finished signalis (i immediately quit the game after the fake ending thinking that was it bc i'm a coward when it comes to horror games, but wanted to know what the story was actually about so i watched a breakdown. didn't think i'd be that interested but was hooked within five minutes. watched the whole thing and realised i never properly finished it. put off finishing it and watched more videos) omflllll this game is insane. it's so quickly become one of my favourite games of all time, like a game hasn't deeply impacted me and made me feel so much since i first played nitw back in 2020

Also, just as a general comment on the whole Dream situation on one of the takes I kept seeing; y'all know that snapchat is like, an actual platform people use to talk to each other, right? It's not like, a creepy platform only used by predators. Right? Like. I've never had a snapchat account, and literally all throughout college I'd get offered people's snapchats and have to say I didn't have it and ask for their phone number instead. My like 45 year old boss uses snapchat to talk with her like 20 year old kids. I once had to write an actual email to another human being to tell them no, they could not put down their snapchat handle as an emergency contact method for their club paperwork.

Idk I had to actually check with other people in the discord to make sure I wasn't insane, and no, other people reported the same thing. Snapchat is a normal platform people use to talk to others. But for some reason, I kept seeing that take that somehow giving a snapchat was inherently predatory and that threw me for one hell of a loop. I'm really just not sure where that idea came from.

one weird and annoying effect of me spending so much time on mainly american social media and watching all these american shows and movies and reading books by american authors and having all these online friends from america etc etc is that like.. when i write i no longer feel like i can set my stories in france? like, bc i write in english it feels like i need to set my stories in an english-speaking country, and the us is the easiest one to set up (i think in a way it kinda feels like the "default setting" of western media?). i feel like if i wrote a book set in france itd be weird or confusing to people, and also im always bugged bc like.. the stuff i write in english cannot be directly translated into french, like it doesnt correspond 1:1 to french sentences, and so if i set a story in france im always bugged bc i think "but that cant be what the characters are actually saying, because theres no equivalent to this in french". so i end up setting a lot of my stuff in the us, except ive only been to the us once and not long enough to get a good impression of what living there is like (not to mention ive only been to nyc), so i also feel like when americans read my stuff theyre gonna immediately go "huh? thats not how things are here. this author is a hack who cant do research." .. so then sometimes i set my stuff in fictional countries or in an ambiguous impossible setting which mixes stuff from various english-speaking countries + france, but then that makes my story immediately less grounded. this is such a big issue that it blocks me from writing entire stories i wanna write bc i just cant even begin to put them somewhere 😔

my silly ass is feeling anxious about reactions i made before there was more context and like i am feeling much calmer about what glenn said in those clips but i do think the discourse around it and the impact of AI on writing in general was important to be had regardless. that being said if we want to be really nitpicky i am still not a fan of how the videos went or how he chose to frame his answer but it is what it is. anyway to me the main takeaways from this should be:

please do not play around with chat gtp or any ai "just to see" what they can do. those "one or two good jokes" that glenn got out of it was just regurgitations of what the ai has already been fed of other people's work. the AI cannot produce its own jokes and it certainly cannot produce jokes with the same depth and context of an actual writer. i can kinda get a writers room wanting to see what it can do in a cautionary way but still we should not be entertaining the potential of ai at all

idk I just. don’t really like that they felt uhura needed to have a tragic backstory for the audience to sympathize with her or to establish her character or whatever. obviously in real life there’s no narrative purpose for people dying, it’s just a thing that happens, but in this case writers decided this character needed an external reason to join starfleet even though they’d already given her a perfectly good internal one. she was already an incredible linguist and starfleet is…kind of the optimal place to use that knowledge unless she wanted to be a diplomat, so she could have literally just wanted to be in starfleet. alternately, I get wanting to have the conflict of a character feeling like theyre the only one without absolute conviction that this is where they’re supposed to be (whether or not that’s actually the case) but if they wanted to do that with her, they could play it so there are aspects of starfleet that don’t appeal to her, but she doesn’t feel like her talents would be well-utilized anywhere else so she joins anyway. at the very least, I’m glad they didn’t just 100% use a tragic past in place of present characterization, but it kind of just ends up like they’re traumatizing a black woman for reasons that aren’t even necessary for the story they want to tell with her.

Monty and Jasper should have been a couple, they had more chemistry and would make more sense as a couple. Their relationships with women were so boring and the way they were written (their relationships with women) just didn’t give me a reason to care about them or root for their relationship. Harper came out of nowhere in season 4 like we had barely seen her in the earlier seasons and she’s not even a main character so we don’t see why she and Monty would like each other. I hope that will be cleared up in the books bc I’m planning to read them and I’m hoping this is just the show fucking up details in the books.

Monty x Jasper would be the childhood friends to lovers trope and it just makes sense bc as viewers we’ve seen them have more interactions than they have had with their female love interests. LET THEM BE GAY!! GIVE US MORE THAN CLARKE BEING SAPPHIC I WANNA SEE THESE MEN KISS!
