👀 mindscapes u say ?
the minute i saw this ask this popped into my brain
Tumblr media
insanity will go under the cut :)
step being step, and them being telepaths, i always thought they had ways to protect their mindscape just in case something happened, so those are going to be added along with the actual descriptions of the mindscape! ill add a bit of what their thoughts sound/feel like because it goes hand in hand for me
Caine- their mindscape is a mix of both the farm and the rangers HQ, because those two were the most fomative places in caine learning what to do and how to be. for a long time they werent anything but a vessel for what others wanted. his mindscape will shift depending on what caine associates the person with the most(fun fact, ortega is more or less at the midway point between the farm and the rangers. it makes for,,, an interesting look to his mindscape). the only thing that doesnt change, though, is that it always feels strangely impersonal, like hes viewing his own mind in a third person perspective. their mind is firm yet adaptable, and while his shields arent,,,,the greatest, they dont need to be. he keeps track of the mental feel of anybody in their brain, and arranges something accordingly. whatever seems to be a particular persons weakpoint, hell pick up on and project. its difficult to find anything in their brain (that sounds like an insult but i Swear its not) since its bare of more personal objects or revealing factors. they use their observations and skill to make sure nobody can do much to their brain– just like a fight, find his opponents weakness and take advantage of it to win.
i always saw his thoughts as a mix of ortega and chens, most of them being short and clipped, but restless. hell often get lost in them, though hes always aware of whats going on around him. their imagination is surprisingly active, and they also come with a healthy dose of overthinking :D
Cyrus- i was mentally shaking your hand when you talked about cyrus mindscape. the core of his mind is exactly what you described; its a blaze, with near welding-torch focus towards its victims. youll be burned if you try to get close. but hes making sure nobody reaches that far. the surrounding area is a icy and cold, giving anybody inside absolutely nothing. hes laid tricks, of course: fading tracks in the snow, an odd rustle of bushes here or there, but mostly speaking its entirely barren. its a test of endurance, and hes depending on people failing from the environment before they can do any real damage. only the people who know him or are observant enough can figure out which way to go. as a little bonus tidbit: prehb cyrus' mindscape was a forest in midday, where the heat was just intense enough to feel it beating on your back. there are still remnants of that in his current mindscape, though the trees are fallen over and theres no sun to be found.
his thoughts are very final, for lack of better word. theres hardly room for doubt in them, though often times he'll ruminate on an idea to make sure everything is up to his satisfaction. despite the outer shell of his mindscape, his thoughts Do feel warm, but its more like friction burn
Cecilia- her mind is surprisingly open, and it is showy. its a museum, and when you enter theres a velvet carpet with those massive marble stairs in the middle and a beautiful chandelier overhead. every floor has paintings of things shes done, with the first few floors consisting entirely of her proudest moments, including the sidestep ones. im sure theres at least one painting of the nanosurge in there, she didnt like the fact that nobody knew she stopped it. there are some more quieter, but still happy memories when people go up, ones with ortega, argent, herald, and more. theres an uneasy feeling at about this point, though. the farther up they go, the stronger that feeling grows, to the point where the mental pressure could crush them completely. ceci doesnt need tricks like the other two do; she exercises power as her means of defense. its coupled with more disturbing paintings too, ones that depict things like the farm and the void. the lights get dimmer, theres less exhibits, and the final floor is just. empty. empty, and utterly lonely. what are you doing up here? theres nothing for you.
shes in the same boat as ortega, aka her thoughts Never shut up. shes creative and excitable, and its easy to get wrapped up in her thought processes. there doesnt tend to be repetition or circling, she doesnt stay on the same thought for very long.
Cynthia- you know the "you... are... lost in memories" line in rebirth? thats what cynthias mindscape is like. its a house thats an amalgamation of every home shes visited before: tia elenas, anathemas, and of course ortegas. it invites nostalgia. every object sends a person into memories, using the same system that nightmare loops do, but kinder. the memories are wrong, though. faces can get blurred, voices are distorted, and touch is especially difficult to get right. it can be disorienting to experience these loops, and they become nauseating if you spend too long in them. the house itself is a maze, and it feels like it goes on forever. none of the rooms repeat itself, but they cant be used as a marker either, because it never seems like you can go back to the same room you were in before. thats how cynthia protects herself– nothing is the same, everything is a trap, and when a person falls for it, she can safely extract them from her mind.
her thoughts are long, slow, and careful, and she often goes back to earlier thoughts to consider them further. her thoughts are twitchy too, theyre easily affected by her environment. theyre warm though, and i imagine feels like somebody reading a story to you

To anyone who knew Cynthia Garcia, AKA @misfortunesoftheliving, I'm sorry to say she passed away August 22nd. Her sister set up a GoFundMe the day after and no one is sure what happened with that money, but we finally had something of a service October 28th.
Now that the dust has (mostly) settled from her loss I'd like to share the above link to a GoFundMe, for something that's already been purchased and is set up by someone I actually trust, and hasn't been getting as much attention as the original.
I'm sorry Cyn, you deserved so much better.

LOST 2005-06
You might want to try handing out some hope every once in awhile. Even if there's a 99 percent probability that they're utterly, hopelessly screwed, folks are much more inclined to hear that 1 percent chance that things are going to be okay.

"LOST" Retrospect: Issues with (6.12) "Everybody Loves Hugo"
Tumblr media
"LOST" RETROSPECT: ISSUES WITH (6.12) "EVERYBODY LOVES HUGO" I just finished a re-watch of the "LOST" Season Six episode, (6.12) "Everybody Loves Hugh". Needless to say . . . I found myself feeling pissed.
There were a few aspects of "Everybody Loves Hugo" that left me scratching my head or feeling slightly annoyed. One, the episode had Jack Shephard claiming responsibility for Juliet Burke’s death. As I had explained in another article, I do not accept this. I believe three people were mainly responsible - Juliet herself, Sayid Jarrah (because he had failed to ensure that the bomb would automatically go off) and especially DHARMA scientist Dr. Stuart Radzinsky. Mind you, I like Season Six. But one of my main frustrations was this narrative that Jack was responsible for Juliet’s death. James "Sawyer" Ford had initially accused Jack. Yet, fans had failed to pay attention to what really happened in the last few Season Five episodes. Come to think of it, so did the Season Six writers and showrunners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof. No one one had seemed to realize that Sawyer had wrongly accused Jack, because he had needed a scapegoat for his pain. Another aspect of "Everybody Loves Hugo" was Hugo "Hurley" Reyes' decision to use the dynamite from the stranded Black Rock slave ship and destroy the Ajira 316 plane on Hydra Island. Why? To prevent the show's main antagonist, the Man in Black, from leaving the island and endangering the world. Fortunately, the ghost of the late Oceanic survivor Michael Dawson managed to convince Hurley to drop this plan, claiming this act would cause the deaths of many on the island. Unfortunately, former members of the Others - Richard Alpert and Ben Linus, along with Miles Straume and Ilana Verdansky had all insisted upon going ahead with Hurley's original plan. And in the process, Illana accidentally killed herself by mishandling the dynamite. However, instead of using dynamite to destroy the Ajira plane, Hurley decided to lead other Losties - including Jack Shephard and Sun Kwon - to the Man in Black or "fake Locke". Why? Thirteen years have passed since this episode first aired. And to this day, I have no idea why Hurley had made this decision. The episodes writers, along with Lindelof and Cuse have never explained this decision. Or have they? Another aspect of this episode that annoyed me was this second attempt to build up Hurley’s potential romance with the late Oceanic survivor, Libby Smith. How can I put this? I had failed to buy their Season Two romance before Michael had killed her and Ana-Lucia Cortez in (2.20) "Two for the Road". After watching their interactions in this episode's flash forwards, I still cannot see the magic between the pair. What can I say? Jorge Garcia and Cynthia Watros had lacked any screen chemistry whatsoever. Garcia had better chemistry with an actress Marguerite Moreau, who had portrayed Starla, a young woman Hurley had been interested in before leaving Los Angeles in 2004. Also, Hurley and Libby's "romance" barely had a chance to start before her death. I simply could never buy it. But the one incident that really pissed me off in "Everybody Loves Hugo". As I had pointed out earlier, Michael's ghost appeared before Hurley to prevent him from continuing with the plan to blow up the Ajira plan in order to prevent the Man in Black from escaping the island. Michael also informed Hurley that he was a Whisperer - one of the island's ghosts, incapable of moving on. In Michael's case, he was incapable of moving on, because of his killing of Libby and Ana-Lucia. What really annoyed me was Michael’s fate, thanks to the series' showrunners. Why did Michael turn out to be the only one of the Oceanic 815 passengers who became a ghost on that damn island? Why him? Because he had killed Ana-Lucia and Libby? Michael was not the only Oceanic castaway who had committed murder or attempted murder. Nor was he the only castaway who had wronged another castaway. For example: *John Locke had committed a series of acts to prevent his fellow castaways from leaving the island - knocking out Sayid in order to prevent the latter from using a transmitter to get help; blowing up the Others' submarine and most importantly, killing Naomi Dorrit by throwing a machete into her back in order to prevent her from contacting her fellow passengers aboard the Kahuna freighter. Locke had also lied about the circumstances around the doomed Boone Carlyle's injuries, leading Jack to utilize the wrong treatment. *Kate Austen had murdered her biological father, Wayne Jensen, in cold blood after discovering that he was her real father. Kate had claimed she killed him to protect her mother from his abusive behavior and many fans still believe her to this day. But Kate had admitted in the Season Two episode, (2.09) "What Kate Did" that she had murdered him because she could not stand the idea of being related to him. She was having an identity crisis. She had planned a bank robbery that endangered the lives of some people in order to obtain a toy that once belonged to her first love. Kate had BETRAYED Claire Littleon and the Littleton family by pretending to be Aaron Littleton’s mother for selfish reasons. She kept Aaron from his grandmother Carole Littleton for nearly three years. Kate was a child KIDNAPPER. Other castaways who had escaped from the island in the Season Four finale - Jack, Hurley, Sun, Sayid, Frank Lapidus and Desmond Hume had either supported her lies or kept silent. *Jack had tried to murder Locke in the Season Four premiere. He was pissed at the latter for killing Naomi and possibly sabotaging their chances of getting off the island. He had never apologized for the murder attempt. Jack had also supported Sayid's torture of Sawyer in the Season One episode, (1.08) "Confidence Man". Both had erroneously believed that Sawyer had stolen Shannon Rutherford's inhaler without any real evidence to back them. For me, Jack's worst act was supporting Kate's lie about being Aaron Littleton's mother. During the three years off island, he had flipped flopped between keeping his distance from her out of guilt and supporting her lie. But Jack never really made a strong stance on the issue. I take that back. He did. In the end, he tried to help Kate keep Aaron and ensure she would not pay any legal price for the lie. *Sayid Jarrah had murdered a fellow Iraqi soldier in order to help the woman he had recently fallen in love with, Nadia Jazeem, escape from prison and possible execution. He had tortured Sawyer for Shannon's inhalers. But his real reason for torturing Sawyer was that he believed the latter was responsible for knocking him out and destroying the plane's transmitter. He tried to kill Ana-Lucia, who had accidently killed Shannon, believing the latter was an Other. While questioning a captured Ben in (2.14) "One of Them", he nearly killed the latter. Following Nadia's death in Los Angeles, Sayid had agreed to help Ben kill of many of Charles Widmore's men, because he believed the latter was responsible for Nadia's death. Many claimed Ben had manipulated Sayid into becoming his hitman, but Sayid was eager to do so anyway. While in 1977, Sayid tried to murder the twelve-to-thirteen-year-old Ben in order to change history. *Shannon Rutherford tried to murder John Locke for his lies regarding her stepbrother Boone Carlyle’s injuries in late Season One. She had never apologized for her murder attempt. Locke had initially apologized for lying about Boone’s injuries. However, he changed his mind and claimed that the island had demanded Boone’s death as a sacrifice . . . as if that was an excuse. *James "Sawyer" Ford had murdered three people in the space of three months, due to his penchant for resorting to violence to satisfy his anger. He murdered Frank Duckett because he thought the latter was the con man who had cheated his parents out of their money. When he finally met the actual con man, Anthony Cooper (who was Locke’s dad) on the island, Sawyer strangled him to death. Cooper was never really responsible for his parents’ deaths. Sawyer’s father had murdered his mother for her adultery and committed suicide rather than deal with rebuilding his life. Sawyer had murdered one of the Others, Tom Friendly in the Season Three finale, (3.23) "Through the Looking Glass, Part II", claiming he did it in retaliation for Walt Lloyd's kidnapping. But Sawyer had stopped caring about Walt by early Season Two. His real reason for murdering Tom was in retaliation for getting shot on Michael's raft, when the Others took Walt. But Tom had never shot Saywer. One of the Others with Tom had beat Sawyer to the draw and shot the latter in the shoulder, when Sawyer reached for his gun. However, Sawyer solely blamed Tom for what happened on the raft . . . even after he had learned that Ben Linus was Tom’s leader and had ordered Walt Lloyd’s kidnapping. Other castaways and island occupants like Charlie Pace, Ben Linus, Juliet Burke and Ana-Lucia had committed crimes or attempted to commit crimes. Yet, Michael was the only one fated to become a Whisperer on the island because "he could not move on". He could not forgive himself for his actions. Many other major characters had no problems with forgiving themselves or avoiding any kind of remorse. Yet, Michael was the only major character to suffer, despite his remorse. What a fucking joke! I suspect that racism was the real reason why Michael became doomed to be a ghost on that island. I believe that racism had negatively affected the series fans' attitude toward Michael. After learning about Maureen Ryan's book, "Burn It Down: Power, Complicity and a Call For Change in Hollywood", I wonder if Lindelof and Cuse had planned this for Michael after Season Two. Even to this day, many fans - including a lot of YOU TUBE influencers - made excuse after excuse for the crimes of characters like Sawyer and Kate. None of them have ever even bothered to discuss the crimes of the show's other characters - including Jack, Locke and Sayid. But many fans were not only quick to condemn Michael for his crimes in late Season Two, but also condemn him for not being a "perfect father" to Walt. I found the latter condemnation ridiculous, considering that Michael had very little experience as a father around the time of Oceanic 815’s crash. Like many other characters on "LOST", Michael Dawson was very complicated. And I suspect that was a big problem for a lot of the show's fans. Michael was never comic relief like Hurley. Nor was he a bad ass like Mr. Eko or Sayid. He was a complex, ordinary man with his own set of problems. Nor did he automatically turn to Jack or Locke to lead him. He certainly did not turn to them to help him rescue Walt from the Others. Considering that the Oceanic survivors never made any real effort to help him find Walt, except for one irrelevant move by Jack in (2.19) "S.O.S.", I am not surprised. In the end, Michael’s real crime was that he had failed to live up the fans’ expectations on what a non-white male character (especially an African-American) should have been. This disappointment of Michael not adhering to the expected trope of a non-white male character may have led to many fans disliking him. Either Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse had dumped this shitty fate on Michael Dawson in "Everybody Loves Hugo" in attempt to kiss the fandom's collective asses. Or they had allowed their own feelings about the character, actor Harold Perrineau or any alleged racism on their parts to do so.

The Puppets
(picrew used to make this)
this is a masterpost on my main steps puppets and their relationships with them! all of their info under the cut.
Tumblr media
Hark - Caine Lynzal
hark is caines refuge. hes the one they turn to when they need to take a break from their telepathy for a while, or when they need to feel real again. harks snarky, flirty, and sharp. for all his bravado, he gets the job done well. whether or not that makes him more frustrating or less is up to you. he has an eerie sense of intuition, so its difficult to catch him off guard with anything. he has a cordial working relationship with dr mortum, but jake has his eye on him. as for ranger relationships, ortega flirts with him regularly, though chen is never quite so pleased to see him. he truly doesnt know why– a bruise at the back of the head is a much more agreeable outcome than a bullet in the gut, no? its strange to watch him, really. hark and caine are almost(?) different people; where caine prefers to stick to the shadows, hark revels in attention. caine rarely shows emotions, but hark uses them like a weapon. ortega doesnt have a clue that theyre connected. high puppet individuality, high puppet comfort. practices aikido.
Tumblr media
Argentine - Cyrus Becker
argentine is a tool. nothing more, nothing less. shes a useful asset to help cyrus gather information anonymously, but hes not going to sit here and pretend he cares for her any more than what she can do for him. she goes to meet with hollow ground instead of cyrus, and was stuck being treated in the hospital before dr mortum went to break her out (cyrus had no idea she was getting kidnapped, he was busy regene revealing to ortega while it was happening). she started out flirting with the good doctor in an attempt to manipulate him, but quickly came to realize she enjoyed his company more as a friend. the guilt of lying to him chewed on cyrus until he finally revealed who was behind the mask. dr mortum requested some time, but hasnt cut the chord completely yet. she flirts with jake, and spies on ortega under the guise of being his close friend. low puppet individuality, low puppet comfort. practices jogging.
Tumblr media
Ace- Cecilia Rider
ace lives lavishly. shes an excuse for cecilia to flaunt her wealth and have her own fun. it allows her to let loose in ways she cant normally indulge in. cecilia also hates being ace. every second she can avoid it, she does. it isnt her, even though they may think and act the same way. the prospect of hiding under the mask ace provides gives her hives. shes no coward, shes willing to face the consequences of her own actions, and she refuses to live her life in somebody elses body. ace is friends with dr mortum and ortega, though shes revealed to mortum. however, she has a strong tension with jake because of her tendency to get into fights whenever hes around. oops. high puppet individuality, low puppet comfort. practices boxing.
Tumblr media
Eden - Cynthia Garcia
eden is not cynthia. shes soft spoken and mostly reserved, but professional and polite. Technically speaking, the game registers her as a mirror image puppet, but thats not completely true– eden doesnt look like what cynthia does currently, she looks like how cynthia looked back when she was sidestep. sometimes, looking in the mirror gives her vertigo as she tries to remember who (when?) she is. eden avoids mirrors as a result, but she cant deny that this body feels better than her usual one. like shes turned back time. the fact shes dating ortega only exacerbates this (ortega also called eden 'cynthia' which. Ortega. could you please stop dating both at once and giving both(?????) your gfs an identity crisis). mortum considers her a friend, but theyre not very close, and jake couldnt care less about her. low puppet individuality, high puppet comfort. practices aikido.

Can I ask 3 and 22 from the Sidestep ask game for your Steps? 👀
sure thing!
3. What is their villain name? Why did they choose it?
Caine- their name is Lycan! in all honesty he wouldnt bother picking his own name, BUT i need to continue his dog motif so theyre getting a unique one as a treat
Cyrus- hhhhh ok. see i can see cyrus taking up two different names– either puppeteer or heartbreak. im sticking with puppeteer for now but ill explain for both. on one hand, puppeteer really is the best way to describe his viewpoint at this point in time. hes the one pulling the strings here, and everybody else will play along. theyre nothing more than tools, puppets, putting on a show for his own amusement, and the fact hes known as a telepath really helps. on the other hand, i can see him using heartbreak as a way to kill sidestep all over again: the more the name heartbreak is used, the more the memory of sidestep dies. plus he sees himself as heartbreak 2.0– he uses the lessons he learned and channels it to the new an improved version, one who will finish what they started
Cecilia- Lupin! one, because the name was pretty, and two, because arsene lupin was the greatest fictional thief of all time, and she's confident she can live up to the name. shes just cocky like that LMFAO
Cynthia- at first i was certain that shed leave her name up to the press, but i think shed be a bit more hands on with how she comes across to the press, if only to further her goals. that said, she ended up deciding on the name Echo. she sees herself as a shadow of her former self, but with just enough intact to deliver a message, one that the people need to hear before its too late (love me my justice steps)
22. How do they feel about their telepathy? Is it a gift? A curse?
Caine- listen to me ok. listen to me. caine cannot introspect to save their fucking life. the only way hes learned how to place his own emotions is by using his telepathy to compare others emotions with his own. it helps them get through conversations with their head afloat, quickens decision making during fights, and most importantly, keeps them under the radar. he doesnt know what hed do without it. and even though hes the most prone to sensory overload, he wouldnt want to live without telepathy. hark is always there whenever they need some peace and quiet anyway.
Cyrus- he sees his telepathy as a weapon. one that gives him an upper hand in situations where fists wont help, so he can turn it more to his favour. but its a double edged sword, and sometimes it can be a hindrance more than a help. it made it harder to remain emotionally detached, especially from a certain someone whose thoughts never shut up. still, telepathy is a useful tool in his arsenal, one that he intends to use to the fullest
Cecilia- her telepathy is as much a part of her as a limb. yeah, she uses it a lot less than other steps, but its still something uniquely hers, and she cant imagine living without. or she can, but oh boy does she not like the image. she doesnt experience sensory overload much, so she tends to take comfort in crowds and noisy places, where she can pick apart the thoughts and emotions of the people around her, a bit like people watching, if you dont watch the people lmfao
Cynthia- ive said it before, but she has mixed feelings on her telepathy. shes grateful for it when used to feel other peoples emotions, because it grounds her in a way most other things cant. she also cant help but use it to make sure shes doing things right. but it still makes her feel guilty in a way she cant shake, like shes invading others privacy even when she cant help it. its part of the reason shes drawn to ortega– she doesnt have to worry about her telepathy causing unnecessary snooping into their thoughts
