My manager is once again, so damn annoying and is the one who is making me want to leave this workplace.
She demanded to show me how to do something depsite the fact she asked me to write a how to template which I'm in middle off, whilst it was busy and filled with people I was seeing to, then had the nerve to hug me in front of said people and it was so uncomfortable.
I had to vent about it to my colleague after.

When they arrived at the old Byers’ house, the sun was already over the horizon painting the sky and their surroundings with deep golden hues, pastel pinks and even some light greens. If the situation wasn't the way it was, he'd think it might even be the prettiest sight ever. Nothing would compare to the sunrises in San Diego with Y/N by his side, but there was something eerily beautiful in the view.        “They’re all most definitely asleep,” Johnathan warned placing the key in the lock and twisting it.        Billy was barely listening to what he was saying, how maybe they should talk to Joyce first, and then wake the kids up, but the second his eyes befell on Alex, he wanted to disappear.        He looked so much like Y/N; the same hair, the same eyes, just his mouth and nose were their late father’s. If there wasn’t the age difference between them, they could pass as twins. With how much taller Alex had grown, most definitely.        They were all in the living room, Mike and Lucas splayed on the couch while the rest were in sleeping bags littered around the floor. Soft snores filled the air, and Billy’s gaze befell on Max. His little sister that he used to genuinely hate, then managed to somehow tolerate and now called her family without hesitation.        Her ginger locks was a mess and even that was an understatement, nose hidden in the pillow underneath her head. A soft smile pulled up at his lips before it dropped. He’d have to involve all of them in this mess. Again.     It was his fault, and now he’d be the reason the week they were supposed to be having fun before the panic of moving to universities and colleges would start, would be replaced by fear and genuine terror.        A groggy Joyce stepped in the living room, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand to get rid of sleep.        “What’s going on?” her raspy voice was quiet as to not wake the kids. They were practically adults, but for them, they’d always be kids.        “Y/N’s missing,” Steve whispered. “And the Demogorgon is back.”
“What? But… that’s impossible.” Joyce shook her head. “I closed the Gate. Hop…” she struggled to get the word out and had to look to the ground. “Hopper gave his life so I could do it. I saw them pour cement down every single crack of every single door. And the one at the lab has been closed as well. We checked. Four. Years. Ago.”        Joyce looked at Will as he slowly stirred, sighed and then turned to the other side going back to sleep.       “Are you sure, the Gate’s open again?” she whispered.        Everyone simultaneously nodded.        “There’s no other explanation as to how a Demogorgon and a bunch of Demodogs could be in Hawkins again.”        “Demodogs?” it was Dustin who butted it lifting his head from the ground, a trail of drool down his cheek. “What’s going on?”        Hearing the chatter, the rest of the Party slowly woke up, small grunts escaping most of their mouths ‘cause they’d only slept for a few hours, spending most of the time watching movies and playing one last game of Dungeons & Dragons.        “El, we need your help,” Nancy was the one who spoke up and watched as the girl’s eyebrows furrowed mind still ruled by sleep.        “Why?” she yawned and stretched her neck.        “Y/N… she’s missing.”        Alex’s head whipped to the side to look at the young woman. “What do you mean by she’s missing?”        “Alex…” Joyce stepped forward ready to be a buffer between the two people, but the younger one shook his head and stood up.        “No,” he pointed at his brother-in-law, “answer me – what do you mean by Y/N’s missing?”        Billy couldn’t lift his gaze to meet Alex’s.        “Don’t make me ask again.”        Robin sighed and went to place a hand on his shoulder. “Now’s not the time.”        “Where’s my sister?!” he roared and finally got his answer, though it was one that chilled him to the core.        “I don’t know!” Billy yelled. “That fucking thing took her!”        Alex felt like he might vomit, much like Billy did. “What thing?” he got out through clenched teeth.        Billy couldn’t respond, he didn’t want to. It would mean confirming everything that had transpired since Tina’s just a couple of hours ago was real, and he didn’t want it to be.     Steve broke his silence.        “The Demogorgon.”        “That can’t be right,” Mike shook his head. “I thought it was all over when we fought that thing at the mall.”        “It’s true,” Will said and had to swallow a lump that had grown in his throat. “I – I didn’t want to believe it when I first felt it. I just thought it was the nerves cause graduation is in two days… but… I think I knew it all along, just didn’t want to admit it.”        Will’s words were what sealed it as the truth. Even though they wanted to question it more, even though they wanted to dismiss it and go back to sleep, write it off as a horrible nightmare, the fact that Steve, Billy, Robin, Nancy and Johnathan all sported cuts and bruises and looked like they were about to collapse was proof enough.        “Please,” Billy begged through tears dropping down on his knees before El, “please I need you to find her.”        She didn’t say yes, or no or anything, just that she’d need something of Y/N’s.        “Like what?”        “Anything I can use to connect to her.”        He had nothing on himself that was a piece of Y/N except… his hands trembled as fingers wrapped around his wedding band and slowly took it off. The skin was so much lighter where it had snugly sat for years, and Billy didn’t feel right without it on.        “Will this do?” he choked out looking at the golden circle. Not once in his life had it been taken off. The day Y/N had slid it along his skin and helped it rest against the base of his finger was the day he had vowed to keep her safe. Seemed fitting that Billy parted with it when he’d broken the promise.        El just nodded, not wanting to say anything that could cause more pain. She sat down on the floor crisscross, Mike turning the TV on static with the old radio as well, helping her slip a black blindfold across her eyes.        Billy knew it could take a while, but every second that El just sat there, blood trickling down her nose and towards her lip was a second of agony.        “She’s,” she finally spoke up after about five minutes, her eyebrows scrunched up in confusion. “She’s laying on the floor on her side. There’s blood on her shirt… a lot of it…”       “Is she breathing?” it was Steve who asked the question, but Billy was not about to yell at him, it was the same thing he needed to know. Had to know to figure out if he himself should keep breathing.        “I – I think so,” El nodded, wiping away a little trickle of blood from her nose. “I think she’s cold. She’s shivering. I can see her breath in the air.”        “Where is she?” Nancy tried to steer her in the right direction. It was good news to hear Y/N was fighting, but if they didn’t get to her in time, that might just be it.        El shook her head. “I don’t know. It’s a dark room… it looks like a big fridge…”        Cautiously she stepped towards where Y/N laid, and that’s when she noticed that all the shivering was not just that, but it was the woman crying her shaky breaths making her whole-body rattle.        She stepped around to look at her face, to see if she was hurt more than the slashes littering her back.    Y/N’s eyes were wide open, jaw clenched in either pain or in an attempt to stay composed. El watched as her Y/E/C orbs moved along the far end of the unmarked room as if tracking something.        “It’s the Demogorgon,” El breathed out watching the creature as well. Y/N didn’t move a muscle, as it slinked around the wall.        “What’s it doing?” Mike pressed on.        “Is it hurting her?” Alex’s voice broke in the middle of the question. She might be his older annoying ass sister, but she was his sister.        “No,” El shook her head. “He’s… pacing…? It’s like he’s guarding her. Waiting for something…”        “Guarding her?” Robin looked to Nancy and Johnathan. “I don’t remember you two mentioning it did that.”        Johnathan replied just as confused. “That’s ‘cause it didn’t.”        “Is there anything else there? Can you see anything through the door?” Mike tried to lead her in the right direction and not get distracted.        ‘No’ she motioned with her head but tilted it to the side and everyone could just imagine her squinting her eyes as if she was trying to see better. “But there’s something on wall… it’s like a vent…?”        She suddenly flinched and was bombarded with questions, but she just brushed all of them off by saying ‘something’s coming’.        Rhythmic thuds echoed through the small room, and El heard Y/N’s breathing pick up. From the corner of her eye, she saw the woman’s grip tighten around something.        “She’s holding something… Y/N… it’s a piece of a pipe…”        That’s when El sprung away, even though nothing could hurt her in the weird space in between, but it was still startling, when Y/N charged at the Demogorgon, jamming the jagged piece of metal through one of the open lapels of its mouth and running towards the vertical little window.        “Help!” Y/N screamed, trying to slam against the wall (door?), but it was just too sturdy. “In here!”        The glass shattered, and Y/N yelped shielding herself from the shards, making both of the girls spring back. As quickly as she could, El rushed to see what was on the other side but was greeted by a screeching swirling black mass. A moving red light shone through and what looked like a cash machine at the back of a diner counter sat still.        Screaming El ripped the blindfold off and fell back into Mike’s embrace.        “What happened? Is Y/N alright?”        “I don’t know,” she cried out. “The Mind Flayer attacked.”        Suddenly Billy was very light-headed to the point Max had to hold his back, to not let him fully collapse. “Her?”        El shook her head looking at Billy. “Me. It’s very angry. But it didn’t want to hurt her… it wanted to hurt you… it wants to punish you…”        A chill as sharp as an icicle went down his spine, and everyone’s gaze turned to look at him. It made sense, in a way, he just didn’t want to believe that the Mind Flayer had enough of a brain to hold a grudge, but of course, it would. And what was a better way to hurt him than hurt the one person he loved most?        “Billy, Billy look at me,” Joyce’s voice was calm and soothing, just like her palms on his cheeks. She reminded him so much of his own mother, that he couldn’t help the additional tears that feel. “We’ll find her okay? Y/N’s gonna be alright.”       He nodded not having the strength to do anything else. And that’s when he broke. Billy’s body shook with sobs as Joyce allowed him to use her shoulder to cry on, his hands grasping at her nightshirt as if he was a kid and had just woken up from a nightmare.       Fuck, how he wanted all of this to be just a nightmare. To wake up in San Diego, with early morning light filtering through their pearly curtains. With Y/N soundly sleeping next to him as he kissed her on the cheek and rushed outside for a quick swim. To come back home and have his two girls on the couch, eating breakfast with Tom & Jerry playing on the TV.        “It’s my fault,” he cried holding onto Joyce tighter. What he didn’t see was how Max had to turn away and grab Lucas’ hand. She had never seen her brother so utterly broken, it was breaking her as well.        “Because of me she went to the woods, because of me she went to the junkyard, because of me she got attacked and now, possibly will be killed. It’s all my fault.”        “Billy, don’t say that,” Max croaked. “You know Y/N loves you, she’d never blame you.”        “But it’s true,” he laughed running a hand through his hair. “It’s because of me all this bullshit’s happened.”        “You don’t know that,” Alex spoke up. He’d calmed down enough to know it was something out of Billy’s control. “She was coming to my graduation anyway. It could've happened then...”        “Yeah, but it was me who wanted to go to Tina’s fucking party, not her. And you heard El! She said the Mind Flayer was mad at me, it’s angry at me!”        No one had a response to that because, in a way, it was true. Yet had Billy not stood up against the one who’d enslaved his mind, everyone was pretty sure - all of them would’ve been dead. Yeah, Joyce and Hopper had managed to close the Gate, but the moments Billy had fended off the Mind Flayer’s monster from attacking Eleven had saved her life and in turn the lives of everyone else.        “Fine,” Billy sighed, and Joyce gave him a tight-lipped smile. “I need to uh I need to see her mom…What do I say to her mom?” There was no way he’d possibly even utter the words – hey, so the reason your daughter used to wake up in the middle of the night screaming and hyperventilating was because her best friend was killed by an interdimensional monster. And oh, yeah, she kinda fought one as well a few years back, and now she’s been kidnapped by one. And it has a personal agenda against me. So, no biggie.        “Tell her she’s staying with me,” Nancy said chewing on her nail. “Tell her we’re having a little get together until the nerds’ graduation; a girl’s night and you guys are having the same. It’s not that far off from what we used to do.”    Alex nodded. “I’ll cover for you if needed. Besides, she already knows I’m hanging ‘round Byers’ until Friday.”    There were a few places they had decided Y/N could be kept at by the description of a large fridge and a cash machine, so they had split up in little groups. Joyce, Will and Dustin would go to Benny’s, the rest would investigate the mall and visit every eating joint they could, to see if it matched what El had seen.        Billy would’ve never agreed to stay out of the search, but, in the end, had relented, when Joyce told him someone had to stay at the house.        “She might show up somewhere, and someone needs to be by the phone.”        “No, what I need to do is find my wife.”        Joyce sighed and placed a gentle hand on his chest. “Billy when was the last time you slept?”        “I don’t know, does it really matter?”        “You’re not in the right state of mind, sweetheart…”        He knew he wasn’t. At the thought of seeing the Demogorgon or any of those creatures, the only thing he saw read and knew - he wouldn’t stop to even think when presented with the chance to kill them, no matter if, in turn, his life would be in danger.        “Then what am I supposed to do? I’ll go nuts just sitting here.”        “The Mind Flayer doesn’t like you,” Max spoke up. “It wants to hurt you, punish you for what you did, for saving El and everyone else. I kinda think it knows that by hurting Y/N it hurts you. Imagine if you just so happened to walk into its trap, which it clearly is.”        Max had a point, and he hated it. There was nothing left to do but watch as everyone else piled into the respective cars, his own Camaro the only one left behind. Billy would never forgive himself if there was even one more scratch on Y/N's body. He was already the reason she was in that position.    He huffed and plopped down onto the couch. It wasn’t long before his eyes slipped closed.
***
“Billy?” it was Y/N’s voice that made him shoot up from the couch, eyes wide in disbelief at the sight of her. He looked around and noted that he was still in the Byers’ home, but the door was unmistakably open, sunlight streaming inside. It looked like it was already dipping down, indicating he’d slept through most of the day.        He couldn’t believe the sight in front of his eyes, but Y/N was right there. Battered, bruised and covered in blood, but alive and real. And there.        “Baby? Oh my god,” his arms were instantly around her body, pulling her as close to him as possible. Desperate lips found hers in a second, and when she responded to the kiss, it was like all the worries melted away into nothing.        “Where were you? How did you get away?” his palms cupped her face, looking over every feature, trying to ingrain them in his mind. Billy didn’t think it would be possible, seeing as he already knew where each scar and birthmark was, but there was no harm in doing it again.        “I didn’t,” she shook her head taking a step back. “It let me go.”        Billy’s eyebrows furrowed. “What?”        “It just…” Y/N shrugged, “let me go.”        And that’s when he remembered, that there was no way she would be so nonchalant about everything. By what El had said, he knew Y/N’s back had to be slashed open, and she’d be in severe pain. He looked at his hands and saw black blood covering them. But he noticed it too late.        The pipe hit against the side of his head and everything went black.
***        His whole body was throbbing in pain, but most of all his head; it felt like it was on the verge of splitting open.        Billy groaned and winced, trying to lift his hand to press against his temple, but found himself unable.        “You made him mad, Billy,” Y/N tusked as if he was a toddler. “Very, very mad when you disobeyed the orders. Now, he wants to repay you the same way.”       His hands were bound behind the chair he’d been propped on. Even through his blurry vision, he could distinguish he was still at Byers’, the picture of Joyce, Will and Johnathan all smiling being the dead giveaway, and that scared him the most. It meant Y/N or rather the Mind Flayer didn’t care about being found. There wouldn’t be anything left to find once she’d done whatever the hell she wanted to.        Looking to the side, he saw a pair of tubes that he couldn’t really distinguish, but the sight of them made his stomach turn.        “It’ll look like an accident, don't worry. He wanted to make them pay as well, but it would’ve taken too much time. And we have so much to do…”       She was walking around the room, like it was nothing, like the rips across her back didn’t cause her any kind of pain. Billy was pretty sure, right now it didn’t, so he was somewhat thankful for that.    “What will look like an accident?” he prodded, trying to figure out the Mind Flayer’s game plan and buy himself some time.        Y/N shrugged. “Joyce…Nancy… Johnathan… the little buggers with them.”        It was like he was dunked in an ice-cold bath head first.        “The brakes just wouldn’t stop, and there’s that tight corner not far from here. I’m sure they’ve figured everything out by now and are on their way here but… panic makes people reckless.”        The wires… they were brake cables.        “Think about Clara,” he pleaded and had to push down the bile rising in his throat. “Think about our daughter! Y/N fight this, fight it for her! You love her! This is not you doing it, it's that fucking thing! Alex is in one of those cars!”        “You were supposed to help us stay,” she purred not listening to a single word he was saying. Billy could see how the red little veins in her eyes had turned back, her pupils dilated to an unnatural size. “You were supposed to make sure she died. Now… you’ll have to see what happens to the ones who don’t do as they’re told.”        With terror coursing through his veins he understood what she meant, or the thing possessing her meant. Billy had disobeyed, so now he would be punished. But when he thought the monster would rip him apart piece by piece, with slowly settling realization he realised that was not his punishment.        Like a mindless zombie, Y/N stood before the moving wall. A lamb ready for slaughter. And only one creature made entrances like that.        Billy struggled against the ropes, the material cutting into his skin, no doubt leaving bleeding red marks on his flesh, but that was nothing to the all-consuming fear of seeing the Demogorgon tear apart the apartment’s wall and drop into the living room.        The TV was going haywire, and he thought he could hear his own car wailing even through the ringing in his ears. A sharp pain went through his knee, and he heard something crash to the floor but didn't care about what it was.        “Y/N, please don’t! I know you’re in there.”        Her eyes were soulless as she looked at him. “This was your fault, Billy.”        But she didn’t even get to make a move towards the monster, as the door slammed open to the house. It was a split second of a distraction, but it was enough for an invisible force to fling the Demogorgon against the wall, and enough time for the other assailant to wrap his hands around Y/N's throat and lift her above the ground.        Her hands gripped around the palms squeezing her neck. They were strong, and with every passing moment she was losing consciousness more and more, but right before succumbing to the darkness that promised nothing but sleep, her Y/E/C eyes looked up to glance into Jim Hopper’s blue gaze.        “Hop?” she choked out.        “Sorry kiddo,” and he squeezed a bit more until her eyes rolled to the back of her head, and her body went limp in his grasp.        Gently, like Y/N was made of glass, Hopper laid her out on the floor, careful not to put her in the shards of the broken coffee table that Billy's leg had kicked against and destroyed it while trying to get out from his restraints.        A beat passed, everyone in a complete state of shock, not only by his sudden appearance but by his resurrection, heroic act and subsequently the aftermath.        “You fucking killed her!” Alex yelled, rushing past the ex-Chief to his sister’s side and knelt down much like Billy was already pushing strands of Y/H/C hair out of Y/N's face, two fingers desperately checking for a pulse while the other boy held a piece of glass against her nose to see if she was breathing        Hopper slumped against the wall. “I didn’t kill her, I made her pass out!”        “Yeah, by choking her to death!” Mike screamed back, even though he was ecstatic to see Hopper again.        His body was thinner, but not in a sense of ‘I’ve been working out’, but ‘my meals consisted of a piece of bread and a glass of water. Sometimes the bread was so uneatable, I could carve paintings on the wall’.        “Do I need to remind you she tried to kill you first?”        “It wasn’t her it was the Mind Flayer!” Mike said.        “Yeah, in her body!” Hopper replied again, not even thinking about apologizing. “I just saved your lives you ungrateful little shi-“        “Hop…” Joyce’s palm cupped his cheek, and he leaned into the soft touch the anger melting away in a second. He hadn’t felt something so sweet in four years, going on five. She had walked into the house right when he’d lowered Y/N to the ground, not believing at all what she was seeing. “How are you alive?”        “Russians,” was the one word he said. It kinda didn’t need elaboration.        El had been stuck to his side, the second she was done keeping the Demogorgon away, arms wrapped around his middle, the. It had slinked back into the carved-up wall and disappeared with one last screech. But she was one hundred per cent sure it’d rear its ugly head again.        By that point, everyone had gathered back inside the Byers’ place. Nancy had converged with Joyce when they were on their way back and noticed something was leaking from her car. They’d been lucky that the speed they’d been driving in was slow, given how both vehicles were missing their brake cables.       “What do we do?” Steve asked the trusty bat with nails he’d been holding now lowered to the floor. “We can’t just leave her like this with that… thing inside of her.”        “He likes it cold,” Billy sneered as he leaned down and lifted Y/N, pressing her body tighter to his hoping that his warmth made the demon inside of his wife squirm in discomfort. “He put her in a fucking freezer… So, let’s put him in a sauna.”

meet mackenzie rae parker, born august 17, 1989 in grove, oklahoma. mack (as she’s gone by since she was a kid and it won’t be changing anytime soon) was born to two loving parents Steven and Margaret Parker, the youngest daughter of three boys: morgan, matthew, and merritt. yes, her parents did have a thing for m names--and no, it didn’t help her momma remember her name any better, like they told their kids growing up.
Maggie and Steve loved their daughter--their whole family, really--to bits and pieces. It had been Maggie’s dream to have a little girl when the couple first got together and when they had first received the ultrasound, well, they were overjoyed. When Mackenzie came into the world, there was cause for joyous celebration and laughter. Everyone was happy the Parker’s finally had a little pink bundle of joy.
Little Mackenzie’s personality was--well, let’s just say she had never been one to shy away from an exciting situation. Her brothers’ had taught her early on that life wouldn’t always be easy so she had to be tough enough to take it head on. In fact, they made it a point to remind her whenever they had a chance. Buts she was also their little sister, and fiercely protective of her. And while it annoyed Mack to no end, she adored her brothers endlessly.
Mack may not have been the strongest Parker in the household, but next to her Momma she was the wittiest. Her comebacks were always sharp and as she grew up, she honed her sarcastic, dry wit in addition to her own athletic talent.
Mack loved her Momma. In fact, if she had to pick favorites her Momma would have won every time. It wasn’t that she didn’t like her father. Her father was a good man--he was a local mechanic at Grove Automotive, always greeted everyone with a smile and cared deeply for his family. But Mack and him were never as close as she was with her momma. Maggie understood her daughter’s firey nature but compassionate heart and saw the way it warred within her--especially after she’d gotten into a fight with one of her brothers.
( tw: drunk driving & death ) When Mack was twelve, though--tragedy struck. Maggie was on her back from work after parent teacher conferences; she was the local kindergarten teacher at Grove Elementary, when a drunk drive t-boned her car and Maggie was killed on impact. thankfully (if one can say that in this situation) no one else was in the car. but suddenly the Parker family had lost its matriarch and Mack, the one person who might have been able to understand her.
She had always grown up as a tomboy--a fact that even her momma, a woman who had been raised in South Carolina to rather traditional parents couldn’t stamp out of her. But even so, after Maggie Parker passed on, Mack became even more of one, almost shunning all that was feminine away from her, as if any reminder of her mother would be the end of her as she knew it. And, for her, it might have been. It was no secret she had been the closest to Maggie--and her death hit her the hardest. Mack got rid of all her dresses, all her skirts, anything that reminded her of her mother--save for the small box of photos and momentos she kept heavily hidden under her bed. On her worst days, she’d pull the box out and talk to the photo of her Momma--it was the only time the blonde ever outwardly expressed emotions, specifically crying.
To distract herself from the grief, Mack threw herself into everything she could in high school--archery, debate, robotics club, anything to keep her mind off of the encroaching cloud that now lived around her heart. It was in Robotics club, though, she learned she had a real knack for using her hands. She had learned early on about cars and the like--her father’s occupation and brothers’ fascination with the thing gave her unparalleled access to a number of cars being torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up. But Mack--Mack was always more excited about what flew above their heads than right next to them. A junior in high school, she had made the choice that she wanted to be an engineer--one who would eventually design an entire new fleet of Boeing Jets for commercial use. She had only ever flown on a jet once--to see her grandparents after her momma’s passing--but it had been the only thing to give her relief from her sadness that day. It’s where her love affair with aviation began.
Mack graduated top of her class (nerd, her brothers would always joke) and soon found herself enrolled in the University of Oklahoma’s prized engineering program (boomer sooner!). Of course, she wanted to stay close to home--one, to keep the costs down but two, leaving her family felt wrong, even six years later. And for the most part, Mack loved it. She got involved in all sorts of things--engineering clubs, intramural sports, and even, yes, a sorority. It went against all the things she hated in relation to femininity, but her mother had spoken so highly of her experiences in the organization, and Mack felt a pull to join her. To her surprise, she didn’t hate it--and it was with those women she really started to learn about feminism.
You see, when Mack would go home, all the women in town would ask her about if she was seeing a boy. Mack had never understood why it mattered so much if she had a boyfriend or not--she was getting her degree in mechanical engineering, wasn’t that a tad bit more impressive than whatever guy she might be seeing? But soon, it occurred to her that the women in town would never understand anything other than her finding her future husband at school. The fact shocked her, considering it had never occurred to her in the slightest that she’d ever go to school to get a husband in the first place. After the shock worn down, it enraged her and made her work harder. Because now, she was getting disparaging comments from the folks back home and the men in her internships and co-ops. Women can’t build things--they’ll break a nail. Why are you in pants? Your legs would look better in a skirt. Mack had never been one to bit her tongue, and on more than one occasion was able to test out what her brothers’ had taught her growing up. No one was going to tell Mack what she could or could not do. And certainly not because of her gender.
Mack eventually graduated college--though deeply in debt thanks to all those added fees for science labs #thanksUofOklahoma--but realized that going back home would never be realistic for her. So, she packed up her truck, Betsy, and headed west. Originally, she had meant to go to Seattle or Portland--that’s where Boeing was, that’s where her dream landed. But something about Charming, CA caught her eye--and she found herself intrigued. Plus, it sure didn’t hurt that no one seemed to care when she applied to work as a mechanic in their autoshop. Now she’s been here about 8 years and she hasn’t grown sick of it yet. She still has dreams of working for Boeing, but as she grows more comfortable in Charming, they seem to be slipping to the wayside.
Mack’s vibe is...well, she’s a loyal friend, a good listener and kind, though not sunshine and rainbows. Growing up without her mom really changed her--she still had a compassionate heart but it’s not as obvious as it once was. She’s still sassy, sarcastic and witty, but she is friendly as well. Smart too--and a bit of a nerd, loves herself some comics and documentaries. all around, she’s genuinely a good egg, just a little...rough around the edges at times.
H E A D C A N O N S →
Mack never, ever goes by Mackenzie. In fact, you’ll never know its her full name unless she drops her ID. The only person you’ll ever hear call her that is her father--or brothers--when something is wrong.
Her favorite food is chicken cordon bleu. She knows it sounds fancy but literally, her favorite is the one where you buy it frozen and pop it in the oven. She is a simple gal, truly.
Her favorite shoes are her various pairs of converse, although for work she can be seen wearing docs so she doesn’t get oil all over her shoes.
Betsy, her truck, is very special to her--she takes extra good care of it. She’s a 1967 Chevy C10 Pickup in a robin’s egg blue color--and her pride and joy.
Even though she loves her truck no matter what, the woman has worked on enough bikes for the various motorcycle clubs around town to know that if she had even gotten enough money--she’d get herself a nice bike. Flying down the road on open asphalt? Doesn’t get better than that.
Mack loves classic rock. Like love loves it--but also the women of the 90′s like Alanis Morisette, Liz Phair, The Cranberries--she loves a good women rock group.

Apple Pie
Inspired by Season 1 Episode 11| Scarecrow
Warnings| Smut, Angst, 18+ Violence
Story is altered from episode because I wanted to fit y/n/ in!
Words|5226
You couldn’t remember the last time you enjoyed the crisp air biting my face. You’ve lived in your hometown too long where you enjoyed the cold autumn weather.Your Y/H/C flowing out the car window as we passed the forest of trees that were like flames dancing in the wind. The colors were beautiful, you appreciated this time of year. You applied a liberal amount of chapstick, the menthol plumping your lips. You knew he was side staring once you started to smoothen it and pucker to get better coverage. A small bratty smirk lined your lips as you looked out the passenger window.
“ Burkittsville?” Dean said, his brows furrowed, his one arm on the wheel and the other leaning out the car. “Yeah, a few times this time of year, it’s always a couple, they go missing in this town. Never seen again.”, You replied. “Doesn’t sound like our deal, but I am curious about the couple part…”Dean didn’t give you a side glance, this time, it was a full on intense stare with those green olive eyes of his. Those damn gems always made your heart skip a few beats. I looked to him and then straight ahead, nervous as fuck. You were never one to back down at a flirty staring contest; but when it was with Dean you knew you’d never win on the first round.”The couples…Y/N?” he continued, “Anything specific? Race, sexual preference?”. Oh, he didn’t mean it LIKE THAT.Clearing my throat,  I replied looking down at my phone,”Oh,no, but it’s always this time of year, the Fall equinox.”.You bit your lip and looked in the passenger mirror, remembering that Sam wasn’t sitting behind giving you that teasing smirk he always gives. He knew you had feelings for Dean, but never told Dean because it was too much fun seeing you melt over him and his older brother had no clue.
You turned slightly to face Dean.“….Are we gonna talk about how we just let Sammy take a trip down the yellow brick road?” I asked quietly.I hate confrontation, but it was gonna be a longer, awkward road trip to Indiana without mentioning Sam. “He made his choice.”, he said gruffly. He pressed the gas a bit more and revved Baby’s engine, looks like no matter what, it wasn’t gonna be an enjoyable ride. The silence was deafening. A bit of short talk about the case and some disagreements on what was making these couples disappear didn’t help the drawl of not having Sammy here. Baby just felt too light, too empty without him.
Finally making it to the town, your eyes immediately widened at the apple orchard. Miles of them upon arriving. Beautiful apples, plump and ready for the picking. You licked your lips, thinking it’d be nice to have some crispy, homemade apple pie, or warm pastries glazed with sugar frosting. Upon thinking anything else that’d have to do with eating; your stomach growled something fierce, “Someone’s hungry, heh.” Dean smiled looking at you as you tried to hide your stomach with your already layered military jacket. “The orchard….I’ve never seen anything like it, full of ‘em” you replied nervously. Nodding he touched your shoulder that made you shiver more than the autumn breeze. “Well luckily we’re not too far from a gas station, just a few more miles.”.
A gas station up ahead with a little diner, you haven’t seen one of these combinations since you left your hometown, every gas station you stopped at on hunts had a small supermarket, all packaged and premade pies. It just wasn’t the same. But this made you feel all giddy, you were tired of the convenience store meals for the past few weeks, finding a case every now and then there just wasn’t time to have a home cooked meal. You immediately jumped out of the car before Dean shifted it in park at a pump, heading to the diner. “I’m gonna get us a table, talk to the local folk, see if they’ve seen anything strange.” You called out while already halfway to the diner. The cowbell rang while you opened the door, the air was warm, filled with many scents, but the most prominent one, cinnamon and apple. “YESSS!” You thought, trying to keep your composure. “Hi! What can I get for ya’?” a young girl with her blonde hair up, a pencil in her bun asked you. “Yeah, uh I smell something delicious, any famous desserts you sell?” “Our famous Apple Crumble Pie!” she brightly smiled . “I’ll get right on it,just for you?” “No, for my…” Your throat started to get dry after you said it. But it was the only way you’d both solve this case. “Boyfriend.”.
Dean parked the Impala and headed inside, “No, for my boyfriend too.”, when he saw and heard you say it his eyebrows raised, surprised. He never thought of you like that once, sure you were a pretty girl, but a bit too young considering he was going on late twenties and you were just at the legal drinking age. The blonde waitress walked into the entrance of the kitchen and you sat at a round table with a checkered table cover and sighed deeply. “So, boyfriend?” He half smirked, his eyes smiling as well. Chuck, you loved those dimples every time he smiled. It was always a rare sight. “Well, I mean… the victims are always…couples….and, I just thought…” You hated try to explain, but Dean beat you to it. “It’s alright Y/n, I get it. We should come up with cute nicknames and hold hands like those chick flicks you make us watch once a week.” You giggled lightly and slumped forward in your chair, “yeah, maybe we should take our slices of pie to go.” Oh my chuck, you actually said that out loud. He was taken aback, but being Dean Winchester he scooted his chair nearer to you, knees touching, elbow on the table, slowly bending forward and whispered in your ear, “I think I’m gonna need more than a slice after I’m done with you.” His breath gave your neck goosebumps as he tucked the stray hairs on the side of your face. You face hot, eyes glazed over.
“Here ya are! Two slices of our famous apple crumble pie!” The waitress served you, then Dean, still with that smile of his, leaning back into his chair, knees still touching, and he dug into that pie while still staring at you. “Yup, he’s gonna be the death of me. “ You thought.
“Oh geez that was some damn good pie”, you said rubbing your stomach. Holding the box that encased a fuller version of that heavenly slice you just had. You sat back into Baby sighing. Halfway to sleepville and you heard Dean get in the car a few minutes later. Remembering what he said back in the diner immediately made you straighten up. “Talked to a friendly guy, says he doesn’t know anything about the couples missing, even though he’s worked here over 20 years.” “Great.”rolling your eyes. Seems the town had a deeper, darker secret other than the recipe that you tried to get from the waitress, but she gently declined since it was a family recipe. “I’m gonna check out the last place the latest couple went missing, you wanna go to the college?” He asked, starting Baby, turning out of the parking lot.
“I’m surprised a young woman like you would be interested in our folklore.” A senior professor wrinkled his forehead,”Indiana doesn’t have that many stories.” With a friendly smile you replied “I’m just trying to get to know about the town more, and I’ve always loved to hear the ol’ times, I think your help would definitely make my term paper a staple example to the rest in my class.”.He looked through his eyeglasses at you standing there between his desk and him, he stood up and took a thick book from his shelf and placed it neatly while turning pages, a picture caught your eye, a scarecrow.
Dean made it to the orchard where the missing couple was last seen. A faint mist blanketing the area. He takes out his EMF meter and starts sweeping. “Why’d I say that so easily to Y/n?” He thought. He chuckled that he made your face red, that those pretty y/e/c of yours were wide eyed and shining at him as he touched you y/c hair, he would’ve loved to egg you on had it been an actual date and not a snack break from the hunt. The meter started to spike like crazy once he was a few hundred meters into the orchard, and there, he saw the scarecrow. Looking at it from all angles he stopped once he saw that one of its arms had a “nice tat” he said out loud, memorizing the tribal to see who went missing recently, the skin looked dry but still fresh at the same time. He was about to text Sam but quickly deleted his name from the messenger. The fight they had back there was different. They just got back into hunting together, and with all that happened, he didn’t think his brother would’ve just walked out on him, on them like that. He knew what to do to track who had the tattoo that went missing, but his muscle memory just made his gut heavy realizing he was abut to call Sam for help.
“y/n, got an idea on what might be making those couples go missing, call me back.” Shutting his phone and throwing it on the passenger side, he was on his way to the college to get you when he saw the sheriff’s car behind him “aw crap”.
“That, the scarecrow, what’s his deal?” you asked the professor and pointing at the image. His eyes squinted but went back to the book. “Ah, Vanir, it’s a fertility god, the settlers here believed that their town would thrive one they’ve sacrificed a man and woman, our town has a sacred tree, hundreds of years old.” “Where’s the tree at?”, you asked, closing the book and getting ready to head out,”Just a few miles from here, if you’ve passed the scarecrow you’ve gone too far.” “Thanks professor, thought I’ll get a couple of snap shots for my paper.” You swiftly turned to head out the door when you were butted in the back of your head with something hard, blacking out.
“Something the matter officer?” Dean asked, looking up at the tall sheriff. “I hear around town that you’re asking all kinds of questions that shouldn’t be asked. I’m assuming you’re not a tourist and would suggest you head on outta town, you shouldn’t meddle into things you don’t know the full story of.”He peered down into the car window, glaring at Dean. “Now if I’d known better I’d say your going to escort me out.” “That’s right.” Dean smile turned into a faint grimace and he started up Baby, the sheriff already on his tail, once he was a couple miles out the cop car finally bleeped its siren and made a u turn, looking into the rearview mirror he did the same once he knew he wouldn’t be in the sheriff’s vision. “y/n, hope you got what we need to get rid of whatever this is.”he thought.
“Ugh, what the….?” blinking rapidly trying to focus, your head pounded badly and your eye sight still hadn’t adjusted, you were in the orchard. Your jeans cold from the wet ground, you tried to stand and felt your wrists tightly bound over your head. “Son of a monkey’s ass!”.You couldn’t reach any of your knives, you scoffed thinking you should have modded your jacket so there would be an accessible pocket knife next time something else happens. Looking left then right you realized you were the only one tied. Recalling what the professor said,“A man and a woman.” Dean. You felt sick to your stomach. What happened to him after dropping you off at the college? You knew he was a warrior, but hunts are always unpredictable. The sun was about to set, you could tell even though the lush, tall apple trees blinded the sunlight. Fog started to blanket the ground and you shivered down your spine, you weren’t going to go down like this, helpless, tied to a friggin’ “sacred tree?” You saw markings you recognized from the book. The scarecrow was just a pawn, the tree is what held the dark power this town was built upon.
Dean made his way to the college, y/n wasn’t on the stairs out front like she said she was going to be when she finished, it’d been a couple hours, more than enough time to get all you needed to know. He tried to call y/n’s cell and it went to voicemail after a few rings. “Her phone’s on, why the hell aren’t you answering dammit!” “Didn’t I tell you to skip town?” Sighing Dean looked over to the sheriff. “Small world, huh officer?” “Step out of the car.” SLAM, right on the hood of the cop car, cuffed, he shoved Dean into the backseat.”What the hell is your problem son? Couldn’t let bygones be bygone?” The sheriff said while driving a few miles out. Dean looked out the window, scanning everywhere to see if you were out there, but the fog was starting to get heavy, and soon darkness would fall. Trying to get the pick out of his back pocket once the car stopped, the officer got out to open the trunk. Any sudden movement would give way that he was trying to escape, the crappy leather seats weren’t helping, gripping every inch of him making it difficult to keep quiet and swiftly picking the lock at the same time. He got free til he tried to open the door,WHAP, right on the side of his temple.
“Dean? Dean! Dean hey!” a slurred voice turning clearer as he shook his head, realizing he was tied up; his eyes opened wide as he came to see y/n by his side, “Oh y/n. I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner. I should’ve known, this town is full of crazies.”.”It’s okay, Dee, you’re here, I’m just glad you’re here now.” Your small smile comforted him until he saw a tear run down your cheek. His jaw tightened and he started to try to free himself.
“We have no choice, our crops are starting to die. She’s our last hope for the town.””Like heck it is!” a distant voice from behind argued with the sheriff, “It’s the last day of the solstice, we have to do this.”, a woman replied. “Please! I don’t understand! Why are you doing this?” Y/n saw the blonde girl from the diner show up with her hands cuffed, followed by the sheriff behind her. “Uncle? Auntie? What’s going on?!” Her wet face showed her heart breaking as her uncle turned away and started walking “I’m sorry sweetheart, this is the only way.” They tied her next to Dean, whimpering and trying to break free once she was already tied to the tree.
The group scattered, and there was a silence in the area that just made it eerie. The lovely orchard you fell in love with in the afternoon drive soon turned into a forest with twitching branches and the moonlight shining on them made them look like the horrors that made you stay up at night. A shuffle made you and Dean start to get into gear try to get free, you both looked at each other and started to try to reach for his backpocket when he shook his head, no way we were going to get out of this, flexibility was one of your best qualities as a hunter but you wouldn’t be able to get out of this with your hands up in the air.
The shuffles grew louder, whimpers from the blonde waitress didn’t deafen it, you clearly recognized those steps. “Sam!” Oh chuck, you were all saved. “Sam?” Dean yelled out. “Hey”, he started to untie the girl first, then Dean.”How the hell did y-” “I, kinda stole a car.” A chuckle came out of Dean “That’s ma boy!” Untying your first hand, you grabbed your karambit that was hidden in your boot, and started to tear through the ropes around your feet. “I guess they knew to tie you up good…you’re a kicker hehe” Dean joked as you grinned at him. Standing up with the rest you heard screams coming from in front not far from where you all were standing.
A dark figure appeared walking through the trees and slicing, gushing of blood misting the brisk air through the moonlight. “Go GO GO!” Sam yelled grabbing the girl’s hand, Dean yours, starting to run. There was a line of sunlight rising from the hills and the eerie atmosphere started to dissipate. “Guys? I think it’s over”you said, catching you breath. Turning back around you went back to the tree and reached out for your lighter Dean got you for your 21’st. The silver flashing as the sun finally welcomed itself. Sam came back with Dean and a gallon of gas. “ What’re you gonna do? “ The girl asked softly as she followed behind Sam. “Burn it.”you replied, glaring at the markings on the tree. Looking up at it “I hope your apple pies were worth it”, you said as you set it on fire. Screeching burnt barks and green and yellow flames engulfed it, burning it into a crisp.
“Sam, I’m glad you’re back.”You told him, hugging his humungous torso, gently tightening your grip. You know, for a shorty you have a bear grip” He chuckled petting your head. Smiling up at him you replied , ” Well my lovely qualities has to balance out with your brother’s cockiness” you glanced at Dean, his lips puckered and his eyebrows raised like those times you have a good comeback but he couldn’t think of anything to counter it. You let go of Sam and walked the waitress back to the diner. “You gonna be okay?” you asked her, a hand on her shoulder blade. “Yeah hun, I’m okay, just, I don’t know what to do. My aunt, my uncle” she softly sobbed. “It’s going to be okay. You still have the diner…” “No, there’s too many memories, I think I’ll just escrow it since it was going to be mine anyways. Thanks, for everything.” Once she went back into the diner y/n walked back to the impala where Sam was in the passenger side, “Hey sasquatch, mind if I sit in the back?” He grinned and nodded, you climbing into the back, you forgot all about the pie sitting, still closed in it’s box. You settled in your seat and saw Dean glance in the rear view mirror, giving you a smirk. It was gonna be a long ways back to the motel.
Sam reserved two rooms, you called the boys for the day and stepped into the cozy motel room. Starting the bubble bath you promised yourself, you opened up a bottle of body wash that smelled of pumpkin pie. You always loved autumn and it’s aesthetic, hell even the pumpkin spice latte you’d have once in a while once Fall started, you admit, you were a basic Fall bitch. After lighting your pumpkin spice candle and placing it on the sink a knock came at your door. Quizzically wondering why the boys needed something after a hunt from you, you opened the door after checking the viewer.”Dean?”
“Hey.”you said smiling, looking at him up and down, he was already in gray sweatpants and a black shirt with that favorite red flannel that you got him at a fall sale, and secretly wanted to wear.Your eyes moved up to his wide chest, your breath hitching when you saw his wet hair that made him look like a hedgehog. His pearly teeth showed a mischievous grin “So, how about that pie?” He raised his hand with the box from the diner. “Oh!” you perked up, opening the door for him, you went to get a couple glasses and the whiskey you had stored for emergencies. You suddenly felt heat from your core start to spread as you turned around and saw Dean right behind you looking down at you. The light from your nightstand lamp complimented every feature of him, from his jawline, the twinkle in his olive green eyes that you adored so much, and damn his chest for looking so toned under that thin shirt. “y/n? You know what you said at the diner?” “Look Dee, if this is just a one night thing I understand, I’m hardly the type of girl you’d go home with let alone our lives as hunters, it gets gritty….” you tried to look anywhere else other than his chest, his broad shoulders, his damn razor sharp jawline. But you’re e/c orbs looked up at his parted lips, instinctively licking your lips. He interrupted your objection with his warm lips on yours, his hands on the sides of your neck, you moaned helplessly into his mouth. Inviting his tongue after teasing your bottom lip you feel his lips turn into a smile “Baby girl, I don’t where this is going, but I don’t mind going with it.I need to hear it.” he whispered while softly teasing your neck with soft short kisses. “What?” Confused at what he was saying, you were just trying not to melt into a puddle as his hands traveled down holding your hips, his index fingers tracing the inner part of your jeans, waiting for consent. “Yes or no y/n? We’re friends, hell you’re younger than me, I don’t want to ruin what we-”You break his speech with a hard kiss, biting his bottom lip “Fuck Dee, please, yes.” You wrapped your arms around his neck and he carried you to the bed, smiling and admiring your curves as he put you down on the edge.
He held your face kissing you softly and then eagerly, your tongues dancing together. You made your way touching underneath his shirt, you were so giddy you let out a giggle, feeling his abs. “Like what you feel Baby girl?” He asks as he stands taller and takes off his flannel then his shirt, eyes still on you. You had gone quiet and just nodded shyly biting your lip. He started to take off his sweatpants when you said “Sam”, he laughed and continued to undress to nothing, “Sweetheart, I think you got bopped in the head too hard today” You laughed back “No, I mean, he’s not leaving again is he? I mean are we gonna tell him whats going on between us too? If there’s going to be more of…this?” You placed your hands in the back of you leaning back into the bed. No, we’re good, and as for us, if you don’t feel comfortable we don’t have to tell him, but you are probably gonna have to find excuses as to why you keep asking for a separate room” He grinned back at you, leaning closer to you face to face, making your back arch, his lips close to yours again. “I guess we can have a bit of fun after tonight” you smiled, and grabbed him by the shoulders making you pin himself down on you, feeling his hardness twitching against your inner thighs.
You gasped softly when he made is way down to pull your jeans and underwear down, pausing for just a second then ripping your black lace underwear off in one motion. “DEAN, that’s one of my favorites!” you scolded him, he just laughed starting to give you kisses on your thighs, “Baby, I’m sure I can help you in finding more favorites”.
Having Dean on top of you made you want more, the heat form his body radiating on you, making your breasts peak. He kept kissing your thighs, working his way up to your stomach, then licking and nipping feverishly on to one of your nipples making your head go back, almost hitting the headboard. For chuck’s sake, his mouth was what you imagined and more. You grabbed the back of his head motioning him to lift his face and you softly smiled at him and kissed his dimples, then devouring his lips. “Dean, please, enough teasing” you whined. A growl came out from his chest and he started nipping at your neck and collarbone as he parted your legs, your hands on his hips to further guide him. A squeal leaked from your mouth as you felt his hot hand enter you slowly, the burn insatiable. “Mmmm feels like someone’s ready for Daddy” you giggled “Daddy? You got a kink Winchester?” “Well when you say it, hell yeah” he replied, licking his fingers. He kissed you deeply, tasting yourself on his tongue. He sat up on his knees a bit to guide his tip at your entrance, teasing your clit with it a few times till he went into you, you huffed out a deep exhale, wanting more of him, you looked at him, lying down on your back, lifting your right leg up to his shoulder, “Dean, fucks sake please move, I’m so wet” you told him, gripping his hips harder. He growled deeply as he slowly placed himself all the way in, you groaned in pleasure and your hands flew up to the sides of the bed, gripping the sheets. You and him fit perfectly snug, he waited a few seconds until you were adjusted, the heat from it all making you both breathe harder. “Shit y/n, you’re so tight” he whispered, gripping your leg on his shoulder, giving small kisses to your calf. You wiggled your ass begging for him to move and he did just that. Hungry to feel him at your spot. “Yea, yea Dean right there, I’m so close, fuck”, you whined. You didn’t care that you were a bit loud, this feeling in your core was about to burst. He started to rhythmically ride you, teasing your spot till you started stuttering his name.”I got you baby, come for me.”
He gripped your leg tighter and started to buck harder, hitting your spot every time. Your eyes rolled back and your hips lifted as your orgasm ran through you, clinging on him harder he grunted, not stopping “Yeah baby, such a good girl for daddy” He told you. The sweat on his chest trickled down on to your breasts and you let go of your leg to lift the both up to his hips, driving in deeper making you wetter. The sounds that came from both of you were pornographic, you were sure you’d have a complaint when you checked out the next day. “Dee, please, I want you to fill me up Daddy” You smiled crookedly, looking up at him, taking his hands and placing them on your breasts. “oh ho, you’re gonna be the death of me y/n/” He smiled, and grabbed your breasts, slapping them a couple times before he closed his eyes and started to ride you roughly and unevenly. You could see his chest tensing and you knew he was near to his end, holding your legs on his hips tighter he thrust in a few more times and a loud growl came out as he filled you up, a heavenly feeling of his hot come in you, you started to hug him once he came down from his orgasm and placed a kiss on his forehead as he laid it on yours. “So,” you said to him, dew of sweat all over both of your bodies, still intertwined, his length softening in you ” how about that pie?” you smiled.
The end! Happy Halloween everyone! I’m surprised I actually finished this in time for the holiday, whew! Any requests are appreciated! I’m slowly making the playlist on Spotify, but I’ll definitely let you know when it’s fully up!

D-Views OFF TOPIC!: The Prince of Egypt
Hello, everyone! Welcome to another installment of D-Views Off-Topic! As stated previously, D-Views is a series primarily focusing on Disney-produced and/or owned films, but from time to time, we go “off topic” to discuss films that are sometimes mistaken for and/or were influenced by Disney projects, and that’s what we’re doing today.
I am super excited about today’s subject – it has been one of my favorite films since I was a child, and it is, in my opinion, the single best non-Disney-produced animated film ever made. This is The Prince of Egypt!
Tumblr media
Before we talk about The Prince of Egypt, it is imperative to talk about the studio that created it, DreamWorks SKG. (As a side, get used to me calling it just “Dreamworks” from here on out – I’ve never been much one to capitalize the “W.”) Dreamworks was the baby of three media giants – David Geffen, Stephen Spielberg, and most of all Jeffrey Katzenberg. Katzenberg got his start in the world of animation at the Walt Disney Company during the Disney Renaissance, when he was head of the Disney animation department. Unfortunately Katzenberg was just one of three very big egos at the company in that period, and he butted heads with the other two – CEO Michael Eisner and vice-chairman Roy E. Disney – constantly. For a while Frank Wells, Eisner’s partner, was able to keep the peace and keep these three working toward the same goal, but when Wells tragically passed away in a helicopter crash in 1994, tensions began to rise. Disney and especially Eisner thought that Katzenberg had been promoting himself as the main face of Disney’s new-found success and taking all the credit for it, and so when Wells was to be replaced, Eisner pointedly passed Katzenberg over for promotion. Whatever one thinks about Eisner or Katzenberg as people, I think it is very clear that Eisner felt threatened by Katzenberg…and he had good reason, because when Katzenberg was forced to quit his position at Disney, he immediately turned around and enlisted the support of Stephen Spielberg and David Geffen to create Disney’s main rival in the world of animation in recent history.
Dreamworks Animation found most of its animators among Disney alumni and from Stephen Spielberg’s dead studio Amblimation, which had previously only worked on three films: An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, We’re Back!: A Dinosaur’s Story, and Balto. Despite their lack of experience, they were very talented, as is evident by Dreamworks’ first hand-drawn film. Yep – first hand-drawn film. Dreamworks released two films in 1998; their real first film, Antz, was released in theaters three months before The Prince of Egypt was. To be frank, I wish that The Prince of Egypt had been first – it would’ve made a much stronger first impression for the studio as a whole.
Fortunately The Prince of Egypt made a pretty good impression when it was released to theaters in December 1998. It earned over $218 million worldwide and received rather favorable reviews from critics for its animation and visual effects. It also won an Academy Award for Best Song and was nominated for two Golden Globes, two Grammy Awards, and five Annie Awards, and even tied with Pixar’s rival film to Antz, A Bug’s Life, at the Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Animated Film. Even at the time of its release, however, The Prince of Egypt was compared to Disney’s animated projects. Critic James Berardinelli said this –
“Like Fox (with Anastasia) and Warner Brothers (with the disappointing (sic) Quest for Camelot), Dreamworks intends to challenge Disney's reign as the King of Animation. The Prince of Egypt is a worthy starting point. It ranks alongside the Magic Kingdom's Mulan at the top of the year's traditional-style animated pile. (…)While last year's Anastasia managed to come close to Disney's visual elegance, The Prince of Egypt matches it. This impressive achievement uncovers yet another chink in Disney's once-impregnable animation armor.”
Now that I have effectively “prologued” you to death, let’s go ahead and talk about the film proper.
Tumblr media
The very first thing we have to talk about when it comes to this movie is its music, written by film-scoring giant Hans Zimmer and lyrical god Stephen Schwartz. Just like in Beauty and the Beast and Anastasia, this soundtrack in my opinion is just flawless. Every single song hits your heart and stays with you long after they have passed, from the lyrical musical numbers to the instrumental tracks. The first one, “Deliver Us,” introduces us to the setting of the mature, real, passionate, epic story that is about to unravel. We hear the culture in the rhythms and instruments used and in the Hebrew lyrics sung by Ofra Haza, who plays Moses’s mother Yoheved. We feel the hopelessness of the slaves and the fragile hope of a young girl as she sees her baby brother being taken in by the Queen of Egypt. We watch this opening scene with almost no dialogue, being told solely with the images on screen and the wonderful music, and become completely emotionally invested in these characters by the end. With this opening, the film has already done what the best musicals do – introduce our story, conflict, and characters solely through song. And from here, the music only gets better.

After this prologue, we meet our main character again, as well as his adopted brother, the crown prince Rameses. Moses and Rameses are shown, in their youth, to be like two troublemaking college kids, constantly competing with one another and having no awareness of grim reality. They are two princes, born in wealth and affluence, and as of yet do not see their privilege. Once their fun is through, however, we are introduced to their father, Pharaoh Seti. In his first scene, we see Seti as a strict man, focused on his legacy and greatly disappointed in his sons’ misadventures, particularly on Rameses’s part. At this point, we can still understand where Seti is coming from – after all, Rameses and Moses did cause some damage and they should be setting a better example as princes – but that doesn’t make watching Seti viciously snap at Rameses and Rameses struggling to hold in his hurt any easier.
Like Anastasia as well, this film has an all-star cast. Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfieffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Patrick Stewart, Steve Martin, Martin Short…although I could argue in some future projects, Dreamworks focused too much on casting big names in a lazy attempt to get more butts in the theater seats (looking at you, Shark Tale), I think in this case, every casting choice made was pretty spot-on. My personal favorite casting is Fiennes as Rameses – Rameses as a character is much more complex than most “antagonists” in other mainstream family films, and I think it would’ve been hard to find someone better than Fiennes to portray that.
Tumblr media
Rameses and Moses is my single favorite relationship in this movie, and it makes sense – it is clearly the one the filmmakers put the most focus and effort into. Rameses can be a serious, proud, ambitious cynic, while Moses can be a light-hearted, sympathetic, mischievous peacemaker. Basically it’s a bond between a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff – darkness and light – and the relationship between these two brothers is so well written that it alludes to years of history that justifies the strength of their trust. It’s why Moses tries to make peace between Rameses and Seti once Rameses storms out of the room. It’s why Moses tries so hard to cheer Rameses up afterwards. It’s why Rameses, upon being formally named Prince Regent, names Moses his Royal Chief Architect.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, at the party where Rameses is given that title, we meet the character of Tzipporah, who is given to Rameses as a gift, but who Rameses “re-gifts” to Moses. In this sequence, we see another hint of Moses’s compassion. When the guards try to capture Tzipporah, swords drawn, Moses immediately intercedes and tries to restrain her himself, so that she wouldn’t be hurt or killed by the guards. Admittedly he mischievously lets her fall into a fountain, but it is still an infinitely kinder way to halt her escape than the alternative would’ve been. Nonetheless, we see Moses regretting his action when he sees his mother’s disappointment and Tzipporah’s wrath. Later Tzipporah escapes from the palace, and Moses pursues her. When Moses spots that some guards are about to catch her escaping, however, he once again intercedes. This time he actually misdirects them, sending them up to his chambers and away from Tzipporah, who had been directly behind them. It gives a subtle hint that Moses, even before learning the truth of his heritage, does have something in him that sees the value of freedom. Moses then follows Tzipporah all the way to the border of Egypt, until she escapes off into the desert. It is here that Moses meets Miriam and Aaron – his real siblings.
Tumblr media
GOOD GOD THIS SCENE. ALL OF THE FEELS FOR THIS SCENE. I swear, I can’t help but feel so much for Miriam here. The hope in her voice is just heartbreaking when Aaron tries so hard to shut her down and Moses retorts in ignorant outrage. Then Miriam starts singing her mother’s old lullaby, and everything just…stops. The music dies utterly, and the only thing hanging in the air is Miriam’s choked voice. (Fun bit of trivia: one of the film’s directors, Brenda Chapman, provided Miriam’s voice in this scene. You may also know Brenda Chapman as the brain behind Disney/Pixar’s film Brave.)
Tumblr media
Miriam’s hushed reprise then dissolves into quiet, horrified orchestration that then slowly builds, until it stumbles back and charges into a run just as Moses does. This orchestration then leads us into my favorite song in the entire film, “All I Ever Wanted.” From the time I was young, this song could always get my heart pounding. I felt all of the fear, all of the longing, all of the denial, all of the pride, and all of the doubt that rippled through Moses’s voice and over his face. When I was in high school and I would listen to this in my headphones on my way to school, I would run down the streets just like Moses did in the film, plodding through all the emotions expressed in each note. Even now I think it is one of the most unique songs sung by a protagonist in a musical that I’ve ever heard. Most “I Want” songs are about wanting more, but this song is about wanting things to stay the same. Rather than seeking adventure, Moses seeks peace and happiness – to stay in this dream world that he’s only just seeing was just a dream. It reminds me of how I felt when the September 11th terrorist attacks happened. When you first see the fragments of your old life shattered around you, you first feel this instinct to grab them and try hopelessly to glue them back together. As time goes by, though, you see how painful such an effort is – it’s like even just clutching those broken shards of your childhood is making your hands bleed – and so you have no choice but to let go of them.

“All I Ever Wanted” dissolves into Moses’s dream sequence, which is entirely drawn in a hieroglyphic-inspired style. This is such a creative sequence – it’s so stylistic, and yet it doesn’t forget to make the stilted movements translate the proper emotions. When Moses wakes up from the nightmare, he also wakes up from his delusion, and decides he must learn the truth. This revelation scene is my favorite part of the entire film. Moses runs down the halls of hieroglyphics, combing wall after wall, until he finally finds what he’s looking for. He sees the image of his father, Seti, ordering his guards to throw babies into the Nile River. The young prince is horrified, heartbroken, at what he sees…and Seti brings a hand down on top of his head, trying to show him some comfort. Moses turns to look at him, pleading with him, “Father, tell me you didn’t do this,” but Seti cannot give Moses that “out.” Instead the old Pharaoh justifies the decision, and even worse, tries to excuse it. “They were only slaves.” Seti’s evil face is truly revealed – the face of callous, wicked ignorance, garbing itself in gold and silk. For more of my thoughts on this scene, you may read this post of mine analyzing it, but to sum it up here, this is the scene that taught me as a kid that evil is not always self-aware…and it even now chills me, just as much as it does Moses. That horrible shrieking of the strings that accompanies Moses’s facial shift from sorrow to horror as he slowly removes himself from Seti’s arms and backs away is a musical representation of everything I feel watching this scene.
After being counseled by his adopted mother Tuya, Moses tries simply to be happy with his fortunate circumstances, but now that he knows the truth of his birth, he can no longer not see the injustices and cruelty around him. He can’t block out the image of his people being worked within an inch of their lives. He can’t block out the furious shouts of an overseer and the horrible, pained cries of an elderly slave being whipped. And it is in this sequence that we get one of the best instrumental tracks in the entire film. The track is called “Goodbye Brother,” and it accompanies Moses accidentally killing an overseer to protect a slave and running away from home. I’ve also discussed this track (and a few others from this film) in another post, but like with Seti, I will restate my core points here. The best piece of this track is the middle, which happens just before Moses kills the overseer. It is a horrific, demented shrieking, one that sounds like what nails being driven into your brain should feel like. The sound is like the accompaniment of a nightmare that you can’t escape. And then just as suddenly, the nightmarish feeling is gone…to be replaced with a different kind of fear and horror, the kind that you feel when you realize it’s not just a horrible dream, the kind that gives way to panic. Moses running away is echoed in the music with every racing, plodding note, until it, like Moses, is brought to a rough halt. From here, a great sorrowful sound takes over – as if the music is mourning what could’ve been just as much as Moses is. Partner this with the tragic verbal exchange between Rameses and Moses, and I think just about everyone’s heart will break by the end of the scene.

So from here, Moses flees into the desert, shedding his identity as a Prince of Egypt, and joining Tzipporah’s tribe of Midianites. While there, we get another amazing song (“Through Heaven’s Eyes”) and see Moses grow from a boy into a man. Even though Moses has grown so much, however, there is still business for him to take care of, and that business becomes clear when he follows a lost sheep into a cave and finds a Bush alight with white, inhuman fire. The instrumental for this sequence, “The Burning Bush,” is in my opinion not only the best instrumental in the film, but also the best non-Disney instrumental I have ever heard. I have never been a particularly religious person – Hell, my parents are a non-practicing Christian and an Atheist. But whenever I encounter a particularly wonderful piece of art, landscape, or music, I think I feel what some people call spirituality. It is a sensation that makes you feel lighter and warmer, like a balloon slowly filling up with air, devoid of fear, worry, and pain. It is a dreamy feeling that makes you feel one with everything, and everything feel like it is as it should be…and once you know that feeling, you can’t imagine losing it. This track is a perfect representation of those feelings – it is enlightenment, in musical form, from its raindrop-like pattering to its slowly rotating tone like a globe spinning on its axel.

Something else interesting about this sequence is how God is depicted. Unlike in The Ten Commandments, which The Prince of Egypt is based upon, this God is depicted more like the New Testament God, being much kinder and gentler than the vengeful God that is more often found in the Old Testament. On top of this, this God is actually voiced by Val Kilmer, who also voiced Moses, making it so Val Kilmer is technically talking to himself in this scene. There are two ways I could read this – one, it speaks of how God is representative of Moses’s inner-voice, so this scene is a metaphor for Moses coming to grips with his own morality; or two, Moses is seeing himself in God, because Man was made in God’s image, and so by the end understands that he has God’s power inside of himself. Either way, Moses realizes that he can’t run away from his responsibility to his people and goes back to Egypt to confront the Pharaoh.

Alas, when Moses arrives, he does not confront Seti, but his brother Rameses. I cannot lie, Rameses and Moses reuniting is a scene that always makes me smile, even if my heart’s breaking at the same time. GODDAMN IT, MOVIE, HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO ME. After the “Playing with the Big Boys” song number by Hotep and Huy (which I suppose is the weakest of the songs, but is still pretty damn good), Rameses and Moses talk the matter over. Moses tries to explain his position to Rameses, and it is here that Rameses too finds his rose-colored glasses cracking. His idealistic hope that his brother was back and they could live as they had is flickering and dying. There is no going back for Moses. He is choosing the well being of Hebrew slaves over the brother he grew up with. And this betrayal hurts Rameses deeply. The animation on Rameses’s face in this scene – from heartbreak, to anger, to shock, to regret, to grief, to vengeance – is perfectly paced and spot-on. From this scene on, Rameses has officially become the anti-villain of the film – the reluctant rival to our reluctant hero.
On the face of things, Moses has made everything worse with his return. Rameses has turned against him and the slaves bitterly scorn him for his battle against Pharaoh. But one slave is with him from the start – his sister Miriam. She rallies the slaves behind Moses, and Moses stands with new strength. He commands Rameses again to “let his people go,” again, again, again, with multiple plagues, to the accompaniment of “The Plagues.” My favorite part in this song is the inner-monologues from our hero and our anti-villain that unconsciously mirror each other.
Once I called you brother; // You who I called brother,
Once I thought the chance to make you laugh // How could you have come to hate me so?
Was all I ever wanted… // Is this what you wanted?
And of course the ending –
I will not LET your/my PEOPLE…GO!
Tumblr media
The Plagues play out one by one, before we reach the Plague of Darkness. Moses goes to find Rameses and tries one last time to convince him to relent before the next Plague arrives. I’ve talked about this scene and Rameses’s son in the past, and you can read that here, but I will just add that I love the parallels this scene makes to earlier scenes of Moses in the palace. Not only do some shots parallel the scene of Moses comforting Rameses at the beginning of the movie, but Moses also passes the pillar and statues that he runs to in the “All I Ever Wanted” sequence. It’s such a bittersweet juxtaposition.
Tumblr media
Sadly Moses and Rameses cannot go back to the way things were, however much they wish it. The destinies that have been written for them and the responsibilities therein make it impossible…and this scene proves this once and for all. Rameses, refusing to drop his pride and refusing to bow to the pressure of someone who threatens the security of his empire, crosses the line and threatens the murder of Moses’s people. Moses cannot save him or Egypt from the final Plague now…and so the First Born are slain, with an inhuman light that literally breathes His victims’ last breath.
Tumblr media
The scene centering on the Death of the First Born is a very powerful one. A striking choice is having it mostly done in silence, with no instrumental music at all. The only sounds other than the Angel’s breathing are the blowing wind, some rattling of trees and roofs, crickets chirping, and finally the howls of despair from all of the parents upon discovering their dead children. The scene hits home when we see Rameses holding his dead son in his arms – Moses comes up behind him out of the white light beyond, and for a moment, he is the Angel of Death himself, bearing witness to the grief of the Pharaoh that was once his brother. And as much as I disapprove of Rameses’ sentiments in the last scene and agree that Moses’s people should be freed…I do not blame Rameses in the least for his inconsolable, furious withdrawal from Moses’s comforting hand. I don’t think I could forgive anyone who took someone I love from me…no matter how noble the person’s cause. This still does not make me feel any less for Moses when he walks off by himself, drops his staff, and then slowly falls to his knees, collapsing in on himself as he tries in vain to suppress his sobs.

At long last, the Hebrews have their freedom, and with it, we get our final lyrical number – the Academy-Award-winning song “When You Believe.” This song is a good example of how, even though this film can get so serious, those darker elements are mitigated perfectly with a lot of sincerity and heart. This song is like a beautiful sunrise after a night of thunderstorms. The mist is still clinging to the air and remnants of the rain are still falling from the shingles of roofs, but sunlight is bouncing off the droplets, sparkling like tiny diamonds, and the clouds are touched with pink. Then the children start their verses in Hebrew, and a new, youthful life is infused into the piece, ringing with the hopes and dreams of a new beginning. Where something has ended, something has now begun, and after the darkest of nights, the sun has returned.
Tumblr media
Just when it seems the Hebrews have succeeded, Rameses does try one last time to circumvent them, by charging after them with his army. Moses parts the Red Sea, the Hebrews make it across, and the Sea comes back together just as Rameses and his army are charging through it. It is only after this that we come full circle – the music at last returns to the theme from the very beginning, “Deliver Us.” Moses has answered that prayer. He has delivered his people to freedom. And so as Moses comes down Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments in hand, I frankly don’t care about what happens next in the actual Biblical story – the ending is more than enough to fulfill me.
The Prince of Egypt is very special to me. As you can tell from all of the links in this post, it is a movie I love talking about and I think I will never stop talking about. It saddens me that this film is not more recognized by the world at large, like so many other great animated films are. Its soundtrack is in my opinion one of the best animated musical soundtracks ever recorded. Its animation is stunning, evocative, and detailed. Its characters are multi-faceted and real. Its story is epic, timeless, and emotional. Recently there was an attempt to bring it to Broadway, but that attempt was scrapped because of the backlash in response to its all-white cast (gee, I can’t imagine why *oh hai there sarcasm*). I sincerely hope that the project will be attempted again, however – maybe The Prince of Egypt can be brought back to the public consciousness again by going to the Broadway stage, as Anastasia has. In the meantime, though, we do have the original masterpiece, and I will always view it as the best film ever produced by Dreamworks.
