Before I'd read the Aubreyad I would see Temeraire (which I had already read) being pitched as Aubreyad-with-dragons and I'd think, OK, sounds reasonable; and I guess it's true in the broad sense of "Age of Sail and the driving relationship of the series is an odd-couple friendship," and in the sense that that's apparently literally where it started. But those serial numbers have been very thoroughly filed off. I don't think there are two men in the Royal Navy more different than Aubrey and Laurence.
Except Hornblower. I guess Aubrey and Laurence look pretty similar if they're standing (as they often are in fandom) next to Hornblower. But that man has things wrong with him that are unprecedented in the human psyche.

The phenomenon of BSD female characters being oversimplified into girlboss caricatures and/or plot accessories to a male character’s narrative is truly unfortunate. Because BSD female characters are so interesting [pointing wildly] look at them!!!! She has feelings and traumas too!!!
Gin is often reduced to his role as Akutagawa’s little sister, and yet! Their personality and backstory is fairly fleshed out outside of being the sibling of a MC. Gin is withdrawn and didn’t reveal basic info about himself (possibility lending itself to the headcanon that Gin struggles with gender dysphoria and questioning their own identity), but still cares about their friends and/or coworkers, in their own quiet way.
Similarly, Naomi is frequently treated as a footnote in Tanizaki’s story, and yet her personality is equally as fleshed out as his. She’s bold and outspoken, a little bit impish, and extremely intelligent. If Tanizaki claims to be a passive character, Naomi is the opposite; we always see her taking initiative to move the plot forward (calling Fukuzawa to make the decision to rescue Atsushi, escaping from the Guild with Haruno, etc). Also, she literally threw herself in the firing line of a submachine gun
Yosano and Kouyou get girlbossified a lot, and yet they both have their own flaws and past traumas that they carry with them:
Kouyou is resolved to remain in the darkness, after failing to escape the light once. However, she can no longer say that it’s impossible to escape after seeing Kyouka do so, and Mori himself has expressed that Kouyou can escape if she wanted to. It’s so interesting that Kouyou replied that she no longer has any desire to; she’s resigned to living in darkness
I’m going to cut this post short before I go on unhinged rants about every female character in the story, but feel free to talk about your favorite girls in the tags please! They literally have so much potential I’m crying 24/7 over them

Hear me out:
If you're dating a Spartan, they're more than likely used to you as a member of active military, right? They're so used to you being a soldier that they tend to forget that before them, before the war, you were someone else. Like, Linda finding out you were a pianist, or Kelly finding out you were a gardener, or Naomi finding out you were in art school. Something like that.
OKAY I'M HAVING A FANGIRL MOMENT BECAUSE THE CHARACTER I HAVE IN MY HEAD WITH NAOMI IS AN ARTIST AND YOU READ MY MIND AND I'M SCREAMING
anyways-
I'm excited you brought this up and this whole prompt, because the Spartans would be more used to a more active military partner, whether it's being a Marine, ODST, a Spartan-IV, Scientist, Engineer, etc. They used to you fighting in a war, Spartans are antisocial by nature, so they most likely wouldn't hang out with your friends or other teammates, and most other branches of the Military view Spartans in awe, so they most likely never see you in a "normal" environment until way later on.
I'm sure they know you have hobbies, they've heard you talk about them and the Spartans delight in it for you but they've never seen you doing them. Most of the Spartans probably never thought of who their partner was before them.
So they are always pleasantly surprised to find out new things about their S/o, like, Linda would be scouting the ship looking for her partner after a mission, more likely than not, she's never heard someone play the piano before in person, sure, Deja played them music as children but Linda had never seen someone play in-person before, she didn't even know the Infinity had a piano. Imagine her surprise when she enters the empty bar and finds her partner lost in their own world playing a random song that might have significance to them. When you finish the song, she wants to hear it again, scaring you half to death when she silently appears at your side, "What song was that? Will you play it again for me?"
Or, Kelly going for a run around the Infinity's memorial park one early morning, say, maybe after breakfast, she knew you had plans after eating with Blue team. She respects her partner's space, choosing not to pry and going on with her business, of course, Kelly can spot her partner a mile away, it's second nature for her at this point. So when she sees you digging in the ground with flower pots all around, she goes to investigate. Her shadow towers over your hunch-over form and you just give her a smile over your shoulder before going back to business. Kelly observes for a while, remembering a conversation in which her partner said something about growing a garden again. "Is this what you mean by 'green thumb'? I don't think these flowers grow tomatoes."
Or, one night, Naomi finds you, Mal, Vaz, Dev, and Phillips, all slightly intoxicated in the staff room, chatting away about life before entering the military while her partner is tapping away at a datapad with a stylus. She's seen you use it before, assuming you were working on reports or reading in-time information. Naomi is about ready to drag her partner away before you've had too much when you start talking about a boarding school on earth that your parents sent you to before the war started, an art academy. Dev leans over, and gaps at the datapad before ripping it out of your hands to show the table and Naomi has to blink before she registers the sketches. Most of them were of...her? Different angles, her expressions that she often shows to you, some were even in armor and you had gotten all the pieces drawn correctly. There was one of BB, and the whole crew, another one of a previous unit you've served in and the last one was her laughing with stars and hearts drawn around her, the words 'the love of my life." written above her head.
I can even assume that John's heard his partner hum melodies, never a full song but humming to yourself while working on a project or even getting ready for bed. He's never questioned it, it's something you always did, he's aware some of the tunes you hum are from your grandmother. What he didn't expect was to return from a mission and being unable to find his S/o for a while until Roland directed him to the Infinity's bar, saying the Spartan-IVs convinced you to perform. It's your voice he's aware of first before seeing his partner on the small stage, singing away like nothing else mattered around you. John isn't surprised when you notice him right away after giving a bow as the room fills with cheers and 'encores'. You both slip away from the area knowing this wasn't John's crowd to be around. "I didn't know that was a song. Or that you sang."

you know elle’s lil foot pop during her kiss with tao? i’m having thoughts about how it relates to her character development.
season 2 elle is in a very different place than season 1 elle. season 1 elle was at a transitional point in her life - she’d come out fairly recently and only just moved from truham to higgs, where everyone was a stranger and she was the only trans girl. but in season 2 she seems to be a lot more secure in her identity and a lot more confident in general. she’s reconnected with her friends, gotten more comfortable flirting with tao, been accepted to lambert, and even made trans friends who she can be herself around!
and the foot pop is a stereotypically feminine thing, a symbol of feminine happiness in a romantic context. elle gets to have similar experiences as the other girls around her - such as wearing a dress to prom, getting flowers from her crush, and this! not that traditionally gendered things are the be-all and end-all of trans joy, of course, but it’s genuinely very meaningful to see elle enjoy them 🩷

Naomi Misora is when Ohba being so so close to write a decent female character until he killed her. She's even more successful and smarter than her fiancé.
Agreed, I feel she should've been in the story a bit longer than she was, it would've been fun to have at least one decent character who was a female on the investigative side of things (but I also don't know if the way Light kills her was THAT unbelievable either? She wasn't super stupid about it or anything, and I think it does a good job showing just how manipulative and unsympathetic to the people he's opposing Light can be at times). Though I def feel like it was jarring how she was just starting to settle into being one of the characters you care about and get invested in following and then bam, goodbye! But that's kinda how this story works most times as well. Nobody's really safe usually, and it's not a long story by manga standards either.

I spent the evening in candlelight and tears with a dear friend who just learned that a close family member was among those massacred in Israel. I won’t name the kibbutz to protect her privacy but yes, it was unequivocally a massacre.
We tried to explain the killing of this family member – a civilian with two kids – to our kids. We tried to do it in a way that would not fill their young hearts with fear and hatred for the people who committed the crime. That was hard enough, but possible. Harder for us adults is the fact that, in their desire to celebrate the powerful symbolism of Palestinians escaping the open air prison that is Gaza — which occupied people have every right to do — some of our supposed comrades on the left continue to minimize massacres of Israeli civilians, and in some extreme cases, even seem to celebrate them.
In fact these callous displays are a gift to militant Zionism, since they neatly shore up and reconfirm its core and governing belief: that the non-Jewish world hates Jews and always will – look, even the bleeding-heart left is making excuses for our killers and thinks that Jewish kids and old ladies deserved death merely by living in Israel.
For Zionist believers (I’m not one of them), Jew-hatred is the central rationale for why Israel must exist as a nuclear-armed fortress. Within this worldview, antisemitism is cast as a primordial force that cannot be weakened or confronted. The world will always turn away from us in our hour of need, Zionism tells us, just as it did during the Holocaust, which is why force alone is presented as the only conceivable response to any and all threats.
The Israeli state’s current murderous leveling of Gaza is the latest, unspeakably horrific manifestation of this ideology, and there will be more in the coming days. The responsibility for these crimes of collective punishment rests solely with their perpetrators and their financial and military backers abroad. But we all have to figure out how to make it stop.
So how do we confront this violent ideology? For one thing, we can recognize that when Israeli Jews are killed in their homes and it is celebrated by people who claim to be anti-racists and anti-fascists, that is experienced as antisemitism by a great many Jews. And antisemitism (besides being hateful) is the rocket fuel of militant Zionism.
What could lessen its power, drain it of some of that fuel? True solidarity. Humanism that unites people across ethnic and religious lines. Fierce opposition to all forms of identity-based hatred, including antisemitism. An international left rooted in values that side with the child over the gun every single time, no matter whose gun and no matter whose child. A left that is unshakably morally consistent, and does not mistake that consistency with moral equivalency between occupier and occupied. Love.
It’s certainly worth a try. In these difficult times, I’d like to be part of a left like that.

[…] women must make their beauty glitter because they are so hard for men to see. [Glitter] is the one way in which women are allowed to shout in order to command attention. Real men are matte. Their surfaces must not distract attention from what it is they are saying. But women of every status glint. What women look like is considered important because what we say is not.

haha don't you ever think about naomi rejecting a leadership position because she knew it would cost her too much and then making that decision because it was the only right choice to make at the time and ending the series with her Very much paying that cost and just sob
#hahah yeah#leviathan falls spoilers#the expanse spoilers#just-#she lost her entire family#because of laconia largely but also it feels like it's because her newfound position#clarissa dies in her arms to protect the underground#holden in a similar manner throws himself at laconia to protect the underground and never truly comes back from it#even when they reunite they are not the same they can never be the same#it's a loss that becomes not a loss that turns into a final loss#bc what else can he do expect throw himself at the next threat only this time it's final#and there has to be some guilt from naomi#even if it's not rational there has to be some part of her that's like maybe if she came up with a better plan against laconia#they could've found another way to deal with duarte and the protomolecule that wouldn't require him sacrificing himsdlf#bobbie asks for her opinion on the plan and they both know the risks even if it's the best chance she gets#she agrees after fighting for so long to be responsible for something like it and the cost comes anyway#same with amos - she agrees for him to go to laconia uncover even if it's as much his own decision#and he dies#and comes back but he's not the same anyway#it's again a loss that's not a loss#with the way things end even if she could never blame him she loses her home - the roci and she loses alex#she knows walking into it she'll lose all of them there's no other way#that's why she keeps herself isolated for as much as she can#she knoes it's come but in a way it seems like she's delaying it and that she's in control#but she's not#and the last time she passes from the ring space back to sol... she does so bare and hollow#last time she lost her son#the last time she lost everyone*#almost bc amos will always be with her but it's not the same anyway

I will say that I do find it a little interesting that Asagiri's writing more often than not is misogynistic/sexualises women while Harukawa's art....doesn't really?

i love how deep the linagram side characters lore goes because i can just say that if we took a side character and a prisoner that have absolutely no connection in canon, arata and naomi would get along the best and it really would be true

💛 - With both
❤️ or 💕 - With Jo-Ann perhaps with the second one having Naomi be the awkward one with a crush- she gets crushes easy I'm sorry fhdgfdg
From @gravityvampire
((SCREAAAMING!!!!)) 💛 platonic
Jim shrugs, his hands in his pockets, before he sees the second half of the comment, the whole world coming to a halt. ❤️ romantic or💕 unrequited love [specify who] "WAIT wait wait wait- you're not allowed to have a crush!" Jim practically whined out, only to look and see Jo-Ann towering over poor Naomi (assumedly hunched considering her usual posture), her large hand flat against the wall. "You know, I may be the quieter twin, but you're always welcome to talk to me~" She winks, only making Jim sputter in horror.
