I was going through the anti Jason Todd tag because I hate myself and want to understand where people who dislike him are coming from and one thing I kept seeing was annoyance at Jason fans who claim that Jason is female coded and realized that the term “female coded” might not be the best term to describe what we mean.

A female coded character in literature and media typically means a character that has no specified gender or otherwise does not have a gender but is obviously meant to be a stand in for a woman or female. Kind of like how Starfire has no specified race (due to being an alien) but is still obviously black coded based on the way she’s drawn and treated by the narrative.

This is slightly different than what we mean when saying that Jason is female coded. It’s not that Jason is literally supposed to be a stand in for a female character, it’s that the way a lot of characters treat him and a lot of the tropes used on him are things that usually saved for female characters, not big buff men like Jason.

To start with, being Robin is narratively (or at least was) very similar to being a woman in a story. Robin is a role made to complement Batman (who we all know is basically the ultimate male power fantasy). Robin’s role is to be an accessory to Batman. Robin can be smart, but not smarter than Batman. Robin can be strong, but not stronger than Batman. Hell, Robin is often kidnapped and used as a literal damsel in distress, a role often regulated for women as a whole.

What sets Jason apart from the other robins (except for Steph) in this regard is that they were allowed to be characters outside of Batman. Dick might not have been the “man” of the story when he’s with Bruce, but when he’s with the teen titans suddenly he’s the smart one who has all the answers. Jason’s Robin was never really allowed this.

Then we get to the most, controversial, part of Jason’s female coding. The fact the he was effectively fridged. Fridging is usually only referred to as frigding if it’s a female character, but Jason’s death checks pretty much all the other boxes needed. An incredibly brutal death that was more about Bruce’s feelings on it than Jason himself.

This is especially apparent when compared to the other Bat characters. For all the female coding, the only other Robin to actually be fridged was Steph (and we all know about the misogyny surrounding her death). Barbara was also kind of fridged during the killing Joke. The only female character to escape this is Cass (to my knowledge). When you look at it through this lens, the fact that the only other characters to be permanently damaged like this for Bruce’s story are female, it’s not hard to see where the idea that Jason is female coded comes from.

You can even find this in Jason’s origin story. Poor little orphan is saved by benevolent billionaire is a role usually saved for little girls, like in Annie.

Despite what you might think, this even continues after Jason’s revival. Jason is still used less as a character and more as a motivation for Bruce. He’s regularly called emotional and hysterical (terms usually used to refer to women).

Jason is first and foremost a victim. A role performed by women in most media. Men are expected to be stoic and “rise above” the things done to them as to not be victims, as continuously shown by the way characters like Nightwing are not allowed to be effected by the horrific things they go through. The fact that Jason is shown the be angry, and sad, and emotional, constantly, and the fact that he’s punished and vilified for it puts him in a place much more similar to a female character.

There’s a reason that so many Jason fans (that like him for a reason past “antihero with guns”) are female. For most characters, when you swap their genders there would be a pretty clear and big difference in the way their story takes place. If you swap Jason’s gender, the story takes place identically.

A lot of this is best shown in men’s reactions to Arkham Knight’s version of Jason. In that game, Jason is similarly angry and emotional, albeit for slightly different reasons. He is also still unmistakably a victim. You’d think the men playing would like him. After all he’s a big cool angsty guy with a lot of guns and muscles. Instead, a lot of men’s thought that he was whiny. That his feelings were annoying.

There’s also something to be said about how his autonomy is regularly undermined by Bruce (specifically in Gotham war) and how his decisions and feeling are constantly treated as if they’re worth less than Bruce’s, but that’s a discussion for another day.

Bellamy ain’t a moc. Bob is, but jason depicted Bellamy as white. The child actor playing him was white. If he intended Bellamy to be a moc he would have used a child of color to play him. And if people gave a shit about POC rep then they shouldn’t even be there considering how Wells/Anya/Raven/Lincoln/Maya/ etc were treated. I notice it’s mostly been white fans claiming rage at bellamy’s death...fans of color long quit the show, so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Bob is Filipino, I could tell you how my friend and her friends adore the fact that Bob looks like them but really, I don’t think you’d care. You can justify the celebrations all you want, I still think it’s in bad taste not to mention hypocritical. Doesn’t matter what child actor was used (”if he intended Bellamy to be a moc??” Jason did cast a moc, he doesn’t get to choose if the character is one just because you decided he can be seen as white) - if anything that speaks badly of the casting crew. Trying to make an actor of color pass for white would also be racist, I’m just saying, though I don’t know if the writers are doing that or simply dropped the ball during the flashback.

And I could say in response to the last part that ‘if people gave a shit about lgbt representation than they shouldn’t be still here considering what happened to Lexa’ but I’m not shutting them up or ignoring their feelings just because they continued watching the show, and I don’t see what it has to do with what I’m talking about. I wasn’t even generalizing to the whole fandom, I was specifically talking about the fans who are literally telling us they are celebrating because they are part of Lexa’s fandom.

but honestly, none of this is what I was talking about. My point wasn’t even that everyone has to be outraged over Bellamy’s death or connect it to the fact that he IS also a minority. I’m not raging at Bellamy’s death either right now? maybe later?  My point is that I think it’s ridiculous that people who do talk about Lexa’s death and how it hurt more because she represented them, and how she mattered to them because they are also lgbt+ members, and are therefore aware of this kind of issues, are turning around to gloat when a character played by a man of color (and let’s not pretend he is just filipino representation, we have always seen fans of color celebrate actors of color even if they were of a different race from theirs, it always matters when someone who is clearly not white gets a big role) got shot and actually died an even worse death than lexa, alone and seen as a villain. And see, I wrote “character played by a man of color” just in case he’s being whitewashed by racist writers. I don’t know if that makes you feel any better. I feel like my sentiment still stands: yikes.

Michael After Midnight: C.H.U.D. & Us

Do you like horror? Do you feel for the plight of homeless people? Do you despise Ronald Reagan and everything he represents? Well congratulations! You have a functioning heart and mind! But you also might be in to the B-movie cult classic that is C.H.U.D. This is a film that has at least partially wormed its way into the cultural consciousness as the titular monsters have become something of a go-to descriptor for any sort of sewer-dweller as well as an insult used to describe alt-righters and other nasty bastards (it works too since alt-right people do often look like they crawled out of a sewer). Unless you’re a cult film aficionado though, you may not have actually sat down and watched this film, which is a shame, as it definitely has quite a bit to offer.

But you know who almost certainly HAS watched this film? Beloved filmmaker, comedian, and actor Jordan Peele! And I know this because his second feature film Us is pretty much a semi-remake of C.H.U.D. No, I’m not joking. I would never fuck around about something as serious as trashy B-movies and Jordan Peele films. This is serious business right here. These movies are pretty similar thematically and even slightly plot-wise, but at the same time their different approaches really help set them apart and make each film great in their own right.

The big thing with C.H.U.D. is its function as a criticism towards the Reagan-era treatment of the homeless and the mentally ill. Homeless people are portrayed very sympathetically, with them going missing being what really kicks things off… or it would be, if anyone in power gave a damn. No, the people in power only start caring when people they start caring about go missing. Things go from bad to worse when it’s revealed that the C.H.U.D.s are not only mutated homeless people, but that the United States government is complicit in their transformation, having decided to dump toxic waste into the sewers. Aside from giving Jason Takes Manhattan’s ending some level of plausibility, this is a pretty brutal showcase of how society treats the less fortunate, and especially how the government treats them. As far as B-movies go, this one has the most instantly believable problem causing the monsters.

And it is similar with Us. The film has a much broader application than Peele’s previous film Get Out, which is pretty blatantly about left-wing condescending racism. But the way the Tethered function, their nature as failed experiments left behind by the government to rot, and their desire to simply be given all that they had been denied because the powers that be deemed them less worthy is not just stellar thematically, it is the sort of message that in this day and age is needed more than ever. Reagan is long dead and burning in Hell, but the evil he perpetuated still stands.

The big reveal at the end – which I WILL refrain from spoiling – changes the entire perspective of the film and showcases the Tethered as not just victims, but people who if given half a chance could easily excel in the upper world. But they were denied this chance, shunned as mindless monsters, and then are we to vilify them when they rise up to take what they deserve? Both of these films certainly show their “monsters” as vicious and violent, but ultimately they are merely scared, terrified beings lashing out at those who have oppressed and hurt them, intentionally or otherwise.

Both films certainly do show the oppressed commit monstrous actions, but it never really stops sympathizing with them, instead (rightfully) demonizing the government and the people who constantly put them in those positions of oppression. C.H.U.D. certainly is more cathartic, featuring the major government antagonist being not only shot but blown up, but it also tends to feel a tad more exploitative, what with literal homeless people being mutated, though I must stress the movie doesn’t demonize the homeless and paints them as sympathetic victims of a cruel, unfeeling government who just decides to kill ‘em all to cover up their own fuckup. This is one of the single most realistic depictions of government ever put on film, and for that C.H.U.D. deserves some praise. Us certainly paints a more sympathetic picture for its “monsters,” beginning with the story Red tells her captive audience, and while the reveal of their true nature is a bit more sloppily executed than the reveal of C.H.U.D. it still manages to bear down with the full weight of its allegorical impact with late-game revelations.

Another interesting thing with C.H.U.D.: the monsters don’t even appear all that much. When they do, they look absolutely fantastic; the suits are stunning achievements of practical effects, though the scene where one stretches its neck out is a bit dubious. But for the most part, even at the film’s climax, the C.H.U.D.s are mostly absent, with a “less is more” approach being used in regards to them. I don’t recall there ever really being more than four or so onscreen at once, and there’s no massive invasion of monsters. Honestly, it helps keep the film from feeling like a bloated spectacle, and the fact the film slowly builds up to the monsters appearing after a brief appearance in the start really helps them feel more memorable and iconic than other forgotten throwaway monsters of the 80s, while at the same time letting the mystery, atmosphere, and grimy New York backdrop congeal and allowing the message of the film to just ooze over and permeate you.

Us, on the other hand, keeps the Tethered front and center starting at the second act, but in this case this is a good thing; the Tethered have a lot more personality, seeing as they are essentially fully human, where the C.H.U.D.s are mutated humans whose last vestiges of humanity were washed away by the waste the government hid beneath the streets. Lupita Nyong’o in particular is masterful as Red, and is incredibly skilled to be able to pull off playing two roles who frequently share the screen and who are essentially copies of each other while still managing to make them distinct and different. Tim Heidecker and Winston Duke too really do a grand job as their Tethered counterparts, in Heidecker’s case probably more than his regular person character (not to say he’s bad, but seeing Heidecker selling a creepy killer is a lot more impressive than seeing him play a douchebag husband).

Out of the two, I think it goes without saying that Us is the better film. It has all around better acting, it has the most incredible foreshadowing I have ever seen with every little thing foreshadowed getting a satisfying payoff, it has a great soundtrack, it has some moderately enjoyable humor, it’s paced very well… but here’s the thing: C.H.U.D.s big reveal of the true nature of its monsters is a bit better executed. A lot of people get hung up on how Us overexplains the origin of its monsters, and while it certainly doesn’t bother me because the Tethered are still an effective allegorical implement regardless of their in-universe origin, I can’t help but feel the reveal that the government mutating homeless people into cannibalistic sewer monsters and then just… not giving a shit about it was just a bit better executed. However, I feel like watching C.H.U.D. actually helps improve the big reveal at Us by token of being so similar that the latter’s twist becomes far easier to swallow.

Both of these movies are great for what they’re going for. Jordan Peele’s Us is a fantastic horror film that uses the genre as a way to showcase the effect privilege has on those without it, whether you intend it to or not; C.H.U.D. is a classic B-movie that, while perhaps still a bit exploitative, is ultimately incredibly sympathetic to the plight of the homeless as well as extremely critical of the government that would put them in such danger. Both films are fantastic in their own right, and I highly recommend both to any horror fans, especially those who love some sweet, sweet allegory alongside their brutal murders.

Both of these films are some of my favorites for really pushing the boundaries of what a horror film can do, story-wise. I think C.H.U.D. is a bit more ambitious in some ways, being a pretty direct attack on the Reagan-era government, as well as being relatively sympathetic to lower class people in a time when that wasn’t really the norm. For its time, it really is an impressive work, while Us, while certainly delivering a message that has strong impact, is a bit more open to interpretation and honestly lacking a bit of the gut punch that Peele’s Get Out had in terms of conveying and delivering said message. Still, I think Us is just better for refining what C.H.U.D. was trying to do and delivering it in a more polished form with better actors, a better budget, and just overall more intelligence and visual flair… which is not to say C.H.U.D. was lacking either, as it paints an incredibly dark and grimy picture of New York that I absolutely love, it’s just that it’s hard to deny that Peele is just a better filmmaker than the director of C.H.U.D. and really knew what he was doing. But again: both fantastic films in their own right, and both definitely worth watching.

Today Screenrant published a piece called “Aquaman is Black Panther, But With The RIGHT Ending,” arguing that the narratives aligned in the same way, but Aquaman’s decision to show Orm mercy as opposed to what happened to Killmonger was the better choice. This seems to have completely missed the underlying themes of both films, conflating them at the most basic levels without regard for their cultural history.

The character of T’Challa/Black Panther has always been a Black man, with Black artists and creators who have developed him into the character know and love. As the first superhero of African descent, T’Challa has huge historic relevance for Black audiences, with only Storm and Luke Cage being just as high up there in terms of historical relevance and influence.

Director Ryan Coogler and screenwriter Joe Robert Cole, therefore, went into Black Panther with the intent to craft a narrative about Pan-Africanism, the African diaspora, and representing the Black men and women in a way they’d never seen in a movie like this before. Not even Blade, for all its badass goodness, has the kind of large-scale Black representation of Black Panther. Killmonger’s death in Black Panther is not the ending I would have wanted for Erik’s character, but it makes sense with how he was set up and the fact that he would mostly only find true peace in death.

Aquaman, for all that we’ve seen, was not created with that same intent when it comes to Polynesian representation. Neither David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick or Will Beall, the screenwriters, are Polynesian, and it was Zack Snyder who initially cast Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry.

Beyond Arthur, his father Thomas, Black Manta, and (briefly) Dad Manta, there are not many people of color with big roles in this movie. That’s valid to bring up in the film when we are talking about representation. At the same time, we should not dismiss what having Momoa in this role means to young people of Polynesian descent, or just brown/mixed-race kids in general.

Part of the reason I cried multiple times in Black Panther was that more than anything, it showed me something I’d never seen on screen before. The celebration of Blackness not only in terms of the culture, but also the visual of seeing Black men and women in the roles of kings, queens, heroes, and villains.

Watching Aquaman, all I could think is how cool it was going to be for a kid to see a hero who looked like them, a hero who had been called a “half-breed” for his racial background being the chosen one—and even in a small way highlighting the cultural abandonment that one can feel when one side of their family is racist. It is the subtext of Aquaman, whereas in many ways it was the text of Black Panther, and there is room for both kinds of movies. They’re not attempting to be the same, and there’s no reason to compare them.

We don’t need to pit these two movies against each other. 2018 gave us: Aquaman, Crazy Rich Asians, Black Panther, Into the Spider-Verse, Searching, and Bumblebee, and that is awesome. Marginalized groups do not all have to tell their stories the same way. It’s okay to have a movie that is more focused on fun than highlighting a single issue. There is always room for a lot of that to be brought in with Aquaman 2 if they want it to be.

We should not dismiss what it means to have traditional heroes and protagonists who look different from what we have conceived the “every-man” to be for generations. Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry does that. Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa did that, and nothing will change that fact. But that’s where the comparisons should end. Especially since the two characters were already similar based on their comic counterparts and that was always going to be the case regardless of who was cast as Arthur.

“As similar as Aquaman and Black Panther have been to this point, it’s in that final battle where DC triumphs – and Marvel comes up short,” Screenrant writes, making me wonder what movies they were watching.

If we are going to compare Aquaman and Black Panther or as will happen eventually, Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, let’s also do so in more productive ways, not just to create DC vs Marvel drama. Not only is it not helpful, but for the most part … it’s just boring.

All of this. There are comparisons to be made between the two movies or certain plot points, but they rely on structural similarities and how they affect their themes of both movies and what they say about characters when compared side-by-side, but none of that plays into shallow comparisons that people try to run with.

Us Movie Review

Every year brings many horror films that provide the basics, and very few that rise above them. Get Out was widely praised as one of the latter; I disagreed, one of my more contentious opinions on movies. To my great satisfaction, the issues I saw in Jordan Peele’s first directorial effort are almost entirely absent in his second feature. If it just avoided doing things wrong, though, it wouldn’t be as good as it is. Whereas Get Out was content to insert some heavy-handed social commentary into a traditional formula and call it revolutionary, Us truly brings fresh ideas to the genre.

Much as Get Out was essentially a horror twist on Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, Us brings another outside plot to the genre, this one from superheroes: the heroic team who meets their evil doubles. We start in 1986, in a visually stunning sequence: young Adelaide (newcomer Madison Curry) is neglected by her dysfunctional parents (it is notable that we never see their faces for long) at an amusement park at Santa Cruz, so she wanders off. As a storm rolls in on the beach she makes her way to an abandoned hall of mirrors, complete with a scary pop-up owl and a fake-out for an exit. There, she encounters a well-worn horror trope: her reflection behaves differently than she does.

The movie cuts to the present day, and adult Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), who has returned with her family to their vacation house near the same beach (note that the family appears reasonably well-off, though not rich, a rarity for horror films; just last year, the entirety of the last Purge movie took place in a stereotypical “hood”). Her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) is a lovable oaf, brave and protective but not in a “grunt grunt, man tough” way. He’s assigned the job of doing some of the dumb things horror movie plots require to function, but because his character has already been presented as both loving and slightly dim, we mostly overlook these lapses of judgement. It helps that they do not occur with anything like the frequency they typically do. Daughter Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) is on the verge of true teenagedom---she doesn’t want to hang out with the vapid twin teens (Cali and Noelle Sheldon) belonging to her parents’ sniping and materialistic friends (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker), but she’s also getting a bit too old for her younger brother Jason (Evan Alex).

Peele spends enough time on family dynamics---the pranks played by the siblings on each other, a hopeful lovemaking session between parents thwarted by pesky feelings, the singular joy of your kids not getting an old song that is just the greatest thing ever---that by the time we get to the scares, these people are well-established for the genre; in another twist on what is usual, it is the white characters who are bare outlines thrown in just to have someone to kill off. The Wilson family, on the other hand, are strange and complex people by the time their copycats show up on the front walk. They appear in red jumpsuits, holding hands, are unresponsive to Gabe’s commands, and quickly launch an invasion of the home. Once they have the family at their mercy, Adelaide’s double---named Red in the credits, though like most of the doppleganger names I can’t recall this ever being mentioned in the film itself---proceeds to tell a macabre tale I won’t reveal here. She then initiates a game, which is where the superhero comparison comes in. The doubles have come prepared, with a strategy to exploit the weaknesses and personalities of their prey; much of the rest of the film is a game of cat and mouse as each tries to outwit and overcome the other. The body language of these beings, which is meant to mirror and exaggerate the worst traits of their heroic doubles, is incredibly unnerving; physicality is too often overlooked in modern horror, though the template of the genre, The Exorcist, excelled in it.

There’s no attempt on the part of Peele to disguise the fact these things are some sort of dark copies of the heroes; it is explicitly revealed in the trailers and in the film’s title. It is a rather masterful bit of slight of hand on his part. We think the duplicate angle is the point of the film, but at the very beginning there is some seemingly unrelated text about there being vast lengths of disused tunnel underneath the United States; I held this in my mind through the first act, but such is the tension of the second that by the time it becomes important to the story, I had nearly forgotten it. Those tunnels turn out to produce an apocalypse, and end up providing a thrilling third act that grants us a great, unexpected mercy: something different for horror. I don’t dare discuss it in detail, for in it Peele’s script and direction, Nyong’o’s stunning ability to act convincingly while playing dual roles that are both fighting each other, and the incredible camerawork of Mike Gioulakis come together in a way that, by itself, may cause me to go see the movie twice in theatres, a rarity. Suffice it to say the dopplegangers are flesh and blood, and that the resolution does not feel like cheating. The final twist could be seen coming a mile away, but it is at least well-earned, and notably more morally ambiguous than how it is usually used.

The visionary elements of Get Out whose visionary-ness I questioned were mostly concerned with the supposedly deep subtext of the film. Some saw endless layers of meaning concerning the place of African Americans in our society; I personally thought the “slavery is still a thing, guys” point was incredibly obvious. Us eschews direct 1-to-1 metaphors in favor of a few different possible interpretations, all of which could be true at once. To a history buff like myself, the idea of our doom coming from underground places we’ve forgotten of course recalls the old adage about those who fail to learn from the past. Masks are employed to suggest the ways we hide ourselves, while an excess of rabbits seem to represent a cycle of life, suggesting the film’s antagonists devour other life the same way they feel they themselves have been devoured. I could discuss this all for some time, but the reason the movie works is because, whereas taking Get Out’s metaphors away would leave the film toothless, this one is excellent even if you completely overlook them. It functions as a film first, and doesn’t need to sermonize on society to grip and terrify us. That it does that, and does it effectively, is evidence of Peele’s creative evolution.

On Rose: Finn, the Stormtroopers & Reylo

Let’s me start by saying how much I love Rose Tico and the qualities she represents. Kelly Marie Tran did such a phenomenal job in the film, making me fall in love with this character at first sight. Down to earth, fierce and compassionate, Rose is above all devoted to the cause to fight against the FO, not to become a hero but to do the right thing. Rose’s dedication to the Resistance and her fighting spirit are her greatest strengths.  

I was therefore especially happy to get more of her thoughts and feelings in Jason Fry’s novelization. There’s one particular passage that I really love and wish to explore here:

“Rose didn’t know what to think about the fact that a man trained to be a First Order stormtrooper could be innocent enough to assume a feral, unapologetic thief actually owned a fancy yacht. She supposed it made her feel simultaneously better and worse about the galaxy. On the one hand, maybe there were painfully naïve young men behind many more of those expressionless, skull-like helmets—lost boys who’d never been allowed to have so much as their own name. On the other hand, battalions made up of those lost boys had destroyed Rose’s homeworld and so many others. How much more ruin and misery would they inflict on the galaxy? How many more people would they rob of loved ones? Rose had never heard of another First Order stormtrooper shaking off his brainwashing and refusing to carry out the murderous orders he’d been given. Maybe Finn was the only one.”

Chapter 22, Jason Fry. “The Last Jedi: Expanded Edition.

The line “She supposed it made her feel simultaneously better and worse about the galaxy” initially puzzled me a bit. Rose sure has lots of reasons to feel worse about the galaxy but what makes her feel better? And it’s not only about Finn. Let’s break down this excerpt and consider what it means for Finnrose and even Reylo in Ep. IX.

I. On Rose and the Stormtroopers

Firstly, I love that her time spent with Finn has allowed Rose to consider something she might never have thought of before, that Stormtroopers could be ‘innocent’, ‘naive,’ and most of all, even ‘lost.’ Rose has witnessed the atrocities that the FO and their Stormtroopers had inflicted on her home planet. She must have heard of many other planets’ destruction since joining the Resistance. And before meeting Finn, these ST were probably just faceless monsters to her. These soldiers wear “expressionless, skull-like helmets”, embodying the death and devastation left in their wake. While recalling the exploitation she’d witness on Otomok, her home planet, Rose was “pale with anger”. But just as Rey has realized that beneath Kylo’s terrifying mask is a broken young man, a lost and terrified boy, Rose also realizes that there might be more ‘Finns’ in the FO. There might exist more “naive young men” who have not been allowed any kind of identity or knowledge beside what makes them “well-engineered cogs in [the FO’s] war machine, designed to further its murderous work.” (Chapter 24)

Secondly, the multiple use of ‘maybe’ suggests how tentative Rose’s thought is. She feels pity and sympathy for these troopers, these “lost boys (and girls) who’d never been allowed so much as their own name.” Would they not be considered victims of the FO as well? Kidnapped and brainwashed, would these Stormtroopers know any better than what has been drilled into them?

Perhaps the answer is no, Rose thinks, they wouldn’t know any better. Battalions of these troopers are inflicting “ruin and misery on the galaxy” after all. There’s also a sense of resignation in Rose’s last thought: how “she’s never heard of” another deserted trooper and so “maybe Finn was the only one.”

To me, Rose feels better about the galaxy because there might be Stormtroopers who are not inherently evil and murderous monsters, but lost boys whose minds have been twisted to do the FO’s bidding. She feels worse because these lost boys ARE following orders to kill, destroy & oppress.

More than that, I think Rose feels better because there’s a glimmer of hope in the form of Finn, who has somehow done the impossible and was able to escape the FO’s grueling conditioning. Finn represents the hope that goodness and humanity can survive against all odds, even against a system that was built to snuff out these qualities from its soldiers. But Rose also feels worse because there might ONLY EVER be Finn, a single Stormtrooper who could rebel against the system. Finn being an outlier, an exception is in that way both better and worse.

II. On Finnrose

The given excerpt is such an interesting addition because it demonstrates Rose’s character development in TLJ beyond her feelings for Finn, which we see more clearly in the film. Rose’s interactions with him have allowed her to rethink the human identities involved in the war, esp. those on the opposing side. Among all the characters who have interacted with Finn, Rose was the only one who wonders about the larger implication of Finn’s desertion. She questions, even only briefly, whether there are or could be more Finns out there. Maybe Finn was the only one who could break free from the FO on his own, but with the right catalysts, could more follow his steps?

The passage also shows how Rose is Finn’s most suitable counterpart in the Sequel trilogy. On the one hand, Rose is one of the more mature characters in the ST. Paired with her, Finn, who has been isolated from the outside world from birth, is able to learn and grow. In TLJ, Rose has shown Finn what she and the Resistance are fighting for: for freedom, against the injustice done to her home planet, for the oppressed and exploited across the galaxy. Finn thus gains reasons to stop running and join the fight. On the other hand, the learning doesn’t only go one way. Rose has also learned many things about the FO from Finn and not just from infiltrating the Supremacy, as was clear from the excerpt.  As a result, in IX, I expect Finn’s arc to be him finding a role in the revitalized Resistance. And Rose, with her own newly gained knowledge about the FO, could again work in tandem with Finn (under/alongside Poe) to help shape the Resistance’s strategies.

While Finn has mostly contributed his knowledge of key FO weapons and technologies to the Resistance in TFA and TLJ, I wonder if he would be able to supply even more powerful insights about the human elements within the FO going forward.

In the TLJ junior novelization, prior to his execution, Finn thought this:

If Finn was going to die now, at least he could rest well knowing he had tried to help his friends make a difference in the galaxy. He had only one regret. He wished he could have convinced other troopers to do the same.

Perhaps in IX, we’ll see Finn and Rose discuss the Stormtrooper program, Finn’s experience in it and how he wishes he had tried to convince other troopers to turn while on the Supremacy. It seems quite plausible then that Finn and Rose could together plan and realize a Stormtrooper rebellion from these musings. Finn’s intention has been shown above. And Rose’s thoughts in the excerpt that starts this post suggest that if Finn voices his intent in Ep. IX, Rose would be able to see where he’s coming from and understand the potential of that idea. While nothing much about a potential rebellion has been hinted at    within the first 2 films (beyond these tidbits in the novelizations), I believe that if he wants to, JJ can still pursue this storyline in next film.

III. On Rose and Reylo

Last but not least, I find that Finnrose and Reylo have more parallels than I’ve previously thought.

In TLJ, Rose is not only coming to terms with her own grief but also with the real person and motivation behind Finn’s hero image post Starkiller Base. Her initial hero worship of Finn was from a somewhat simplistic point of view, (just as Rey’s view of Kylo as a ‘murderous snake’ was.) Reality, Rose finds, is much more complicated. While his desire to take the beacon and flee (to save Rey) is not entirely selfish, Finn also hasn’t had a reason to join the Resistance cause. Though Finn had returned once to the FO to save his friend, all he wants to do at the start of TLJ is to continue his run since TFA, mostly out of fear. This fear is the result of his years in the FO, of having been disciplined and punished to elicit obedience, and of knowing the FO’s terrifying military capabilities. Knowing what he knows, the most realistic action is to run. Throughout the film (and the book), Rose gradually realizes that she needs to “give him a break”, that he might need time to really shake off the pernicious effects of his oppressive Master, to find the courage and desire to be in the fight, and to find his belonging.

“Maybe it hadn’t just been his infatuation with Rey that had driven him to flee, she thought—maybe he’d also been trying to escape unfamiliar surroundings in which he was alone and didn’t fit in.” (Chapter 24)

Isn’t this what Rey also realized about Ben after the throne room scene to an extent? That the choice to turn and what to do after that turn is a complicated and difficult one?

“Luke’s error had been to assume that Ben Solo’s future was predetermined—that his choice had been made. Her error had been to assume that Kylo Ren’s choice was simple—that turning on Snoke was the same as rejecting the pull of the darkness.” (Chap. 29) (or the same as joining the Resistance)

While both Finn and Kylo had done the right things, the selfless things at some point (Finn helping the Resistance on SB and even with the Canto Bight mission, Kylo killing Snoke), they were not ready to immediately join a new cause or to change their long-held paths. But as I’ve described above, both Rey and Rose see the glimmer of hope and the goodness within both men. Similar to how Finn still retains a good heart despite all his Stormtrooper training, it is incredible that Kylo still feels compassion for Rey (and Finn at the beginning of TFA), remorse after Han’s death, and love for his mother. Even after a lifetime of manipulation and abuse by Snoke. Although Finn and Kylo are surely at different stages of their journey, I believe the parallels are there. While Finn was able to escape the FO in TFA, the shadow of what he endured as a Stormtrooper remains with him long after. It was only with time, others’ help and inspiration that Finn realizes the cause he truly believes in and find the strength & courage to fight for it.

And so will Ben Solo.

Many have said that Rose will be one of the first people to understand Rey and Kylo’s connection and Rey’s belief in Kylo’s goodness, and I wholeheartedly agree. Rose’d definitely know what it means to focus on saving those one loves, rather than just destroying the things one hates. Not only that, given the above excerpts, it is also clear that after TLJ, Rose has gained a more complex understanding of her enemies. There’ll surely be ruthless and remorseless individuals in the FO, like Hux or Phasma. But there might exist lost boys (and girls), who are killing, hurting because of years of manipulation & conditioning. Finn’s escape represents the hope that perhaps all is not lost. Finally, I think Rose will also understand that not everyone can make the right and selfless choice all at once, or all the time, even if that choice comes more naturally to others. Even if there’s goodness in someone, it might take time for them to choose to follow the hard path or the right cause.

All in all, Finn and Rose’s individual development and dynamics in TLJ are some of my favorite things about the film. Their relationship, though not as angst-filled and brimming with sexual/romantic tension like Rey and Kylo, still presents some of the most interesting ideas and concepts in the Sequel Trilogy. If Reylo has the epic trappings and mystery of the Force, Finnrose deals with the war in Star Wars on a more on-the-ground level, where troops and technicians dwell. However, both represent themes about hope, faith in love and in the goodness of others.
