The way some people talk about Neil and Todd's relationship make me think we didn't watch the same movie.
Todd didn't ruin Neil nor did Neil become unhappy by being friends with Todd. Todd wasn't a burden to Neil. The reason Neil was so unhappy was because of his father and the expectations of others on him.
Neil doesn't see Todd as "an experience" and I think that claim really undermines Neil as a character. I understand why some people believe that but Neil is a very genuine character and doesn't create bonds with any of the poets "for the hell of it". Neils the type of person to show up at your front door if he hasn't talked to you in 3 days. Watching their scenes together, watching the relationship these characters develop, even the way Todd reacts to Neils death. It shows there's a lot more than what the camera showed us, especially when Todd screams at Cameron about Neil loving acting. Although obviously everyone knows that Neil loves acting, that part alone just showed there's a whole lot more conversation that we missed betweens these characters and whole lot more than an "experience"
TLDR: People mischaracterize the hell out of Neil

the reason dps is so loved is because of how real it feels, how much we can relate to wanting to find our true self whilst living within societal norms.
the boys each have their own real personalities, and they do human things that any seventeen year old boy would do.
the debate between which poet, cam or knox being the most hated is so fueling because, who would 'betray' their friends like that but also who would go out of their way to chase a girl who has made her feelings clear??
it's not just them though, because even though i've talked about how relatable it is, the boys cling to one another, showing their deepest praises towards eachother - it's also the other boys around them.
the school has all kinds of different age ranges, and whilst you see the younger kids crying, not wanting to leave their parents, being jostled around.
you can see the older kids doing the jostling, messing around with one another (imagine a highschool if you will - year 7s and year 11s - freshmans and seniors).
knox literally grabbing that little kid and moving him aside, spaz's friends in the bathroom with the kazoo, hopkins, and his friends can also be seen teasing each other within the classroom.
mr keating is a new teacher, a teacher who is a free thinker compared to the other, the boys in his class reactions that differ are all very real.
fighting one moment to being friends again - a very common thing amongst boys.
i just- i don't know!! i really love this movie!!

One thing I really did enjoy about the Dead Poets Society book (even if I still don't like it more than the movie) is the emotion in it. The first scene with Neil's father feels uncomfortable in the book and its compelling. The anger, Todd's inability to comfort him, especially the early on mention of Neil hurting himself when upset. Then later on in the book, with the deskset scene, how helpless it feels. Neil wasn't a boy who could make everyone feel alright again, and I admire that about the book. (Because its more relatable) He was just a kid struggling to regulate his emotions. To explain them would have been impossible. The sudden bond between Todd and Neil also makes much more sense in the book because Todd is the only one who recognizes it. They were both so neglected it shaped them as people, even if it was different for both of them.
Also rip Neil Perry you would've loved gay marriage and therapy

songs that are so anderperry-coded. . . ♡
this version especially...
i could quote the whole song but here are my fave lines:
And then I can tell myself What the hell I'm supposed to do
I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you
mostly cute, also gut-wrenching at times. still obsessed
All I know for now is our bodies clutching tight Leaving wrinkles across your eyelids From the sheet that is our garden And I sincerely beg your pardon If I'll break your heart or if you will break mine
okay this one's gonna be long but i've been obsessed with this song since like march and i've just joined the DPS fandom and it's so anderperry. . . !
All my friends tell me I should move on I'm lying in the ocean, singing your song Ahh That's how you sang it
todd reading a midsummer night's dream out loud every night, always accompanied by hysterical sobbing and wailing that gets harder when neil's parts come up. . .
Loving you forever can't be wrong Even though you're not here, won't move on Ahh That's how we played it
todd wasn't going to be the same after neil, everybody knew. he became closer with the poets (and jeff, they had a heart-to-heart talk after jeff found out), yes, but with other people, he became even more closed off, not wanting to let people in, too scared of pain.
And there's no remedy for memory, your face is like a melody It won't leave my head Your soul is haunting me and telling me that everything is fine But I wish I was dead (dead, like you)
the poets never left todd alone that much post-neil (unpredictable, he was. better safe if ever). the times they did it was to give him space, or because it was physically impossible to be there with him. they take turns rooming with him at night, stolen bed sheets laid on the floor. they don't use neil's bed; it's sacred, it's to be left the same as it is before. todd's sobs synchronize with their soothing voices. and sometimes they start crying too, and that's when todd feels that he's not alone the most, ever since neil.
Every time I close my eyes, it's like a dark paradise No one compares to you I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side Every time I close my eyes, it's like a dark paradise No one compares to you I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side
todd's surrounding was suffocating. everything reminds him of neil neil neil neil neil. the door to their room, and every other room because their doors were identical. their room: on the first week, he slept on neil's bed, and then he slept on the floor for weeks until he felt okay enough to sleep on his own bed. if he closes his eyes hard enough, concentrates hard enough, he can hear himself and neil.
sorry it became a lyric analysis or whatever This is basically hyperfixation #1 + hyperfixation #2 it's great!!

Really wanted to read long dps analysis' on tumblr by searching 'dead poets society analysis' but instead all I get is random poetry, that does not relate at all, cheesy fall mood boards and anderperry. Not even good anderperry, just them being okay friends (they chose the scene at the play, not like the cave scene or other little hints). Like, why is it so hard to find a 7 page analysis on why it didn't have a good ending and why that's good.

hello! if you’d like, please list 5 things that make you happy, then put the same message in the ask box of the last ten people that reblogged something from you. you don’t have to, it’s up to you! 💕
Omg this is my first ask! Does this make you my first proper mutual on here?
Knarlie. I love thinking, reading and writing about Knox and Charlie as a nuanced bi4bi couple, that can do the sweet side that's not talked about much, but also as a hypersexual couple as the fandom already has anderperry for the sweet vibes.
Acting/drama. I study Drama at university and it's my ambition to be in films/tv/theatre. I love to have nuanced convos about pieces of live art, as well as film analysis.
Adoption reform! I was adopted at 3 and it has hugely shaped my life. I love to talk about things I find difficult or have to adapt, being adopted, that most people would never think about. I'm starting a YouTube channel where I discuss the reforms proposed and see how things have changed in the 17 years I've been adopted.
Twilight. I'm currently writing a tv adaptation of it to further my writing skills and I think there are important themes that are discussed in the books.
Autumn/Spring. I love the way you can choose to wear a jumper, but you don't have to. There's versatility. I don't have to wear tights with my skirts. I can go out without a jacket.

DPS: The Hourglass Trope
Both Todd and Neil fall victim to the 'hourglass trope' meaning they both involuntarily switch positions in their lives. Todd starts out as a timid young man who is yet to understand his self worth. Throughout the film he is growing into his skin, finding comfort in the Poets and Mr. Keating.
After Neil's suicide, Todd finally learns to speak out, as seen in the infamous “O Captain, My Captain!” scene at the end of the film. At this moment in the film, Todd has learnt to appreciate himself and to stand up for what is true. On the contrary, Neil Perry begins the film as an outspoken, positive force in the Poets' lives. He is fully accepting of himself and wears his heart on his sleeve. Neil pushes Todd outside of what he is comfortable with, rejecting the constricting hands of conformity.
With the pressures of his father's expectations becoming increasingly more restrictive, Neil shrinks into his own skin, slowly losing his identity. Neil gradually grows more and more closed in as his life is planned out for him. Momentarily before he commits suicide, he attempts to stand up to his father, he is pushed back down again and Neil has become the version of Todd we saw at the beginning of the film, quiet, compliant, and afraid.
Ultimately, Neil takes his own life. The film starts with anxious new-kid Todd and outspoken, confident Neil. By the end of the film, their places have swapped entirely.
~
I wrote this a while ago and posted it to the Todd Anderson and Neil Perry wiki page.
Shoutout to my friend who listens to me talk about dps all the time even though he hasn't seen it.

HOLD ON, i just finished reading a midsummer's night dream and i have something to say in relation to dead poets society.
at the end of the play puck (neil) apologies for the play, and in a way i like to see it as neil apologising for the play.
he (neil/puck) invites the audience to view this play as a dream if they do not like it and i might be going insane but it seems to me like neil could be addressing these lines to his father. in fact we see mr. perry's reaction to (specifically) the lines: "think but this, and all is mended, that you have but slumber'd here, while these visions did appear", which apologize for the play. and all the other reactions we see are to the lines that refer to apologising for the play AHHH
