The Hornet in the Beehive
Tumblr media
The passages of the Bible that mention hornets (or, notably, just a single hornet) are talking almost exclusively about the Exodus of the people of Israel from Egypt and God guiding them to the promised land. Specifically, these verses discuss how the people already living in the promised land will be destroyed ahead of the chosen peoples’ arrival by the hornet(s).
The hornet is not who you think it is.
Read on Ao3
Exodus 23:28
The reference in verse 28 appears within this section, entitled God’s Angel to Prepare the Way:
20 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23 My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out… 28 I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.
From this, we may be able to take that the guardian angel sent ahead of the Chosen People to wipe out the unclean is synonymous with the hornet (in the original Hebrew, הַצִּרְעָ֖ה,  “haṣ-ṣir-‘āh” and yes it seems that the Hebrew word for hornet is pronounced Azira, or more specifically, “A-tsira,” “the-hornet”). (Why did I look at this? Because I wanted to know if the translation for hornet(s) was from a singular, plural, or group noun. Seems like it’s a group noun but I’m not certain.)
So what we have here is an angel symbolically represented as a hornet, pronounced Azira in the original language of the Bible, whose job it is to wipe out those God deems unworthy.
Do with this as you will.
Deuteronomy 7:20
This verse appears in a section entitled Driving Out the Nations
1 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations—the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than you— 2 and when the Lord your God has delivered them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy them totally (footnote: The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them; also in verse 26). Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy.
20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished.
Notably, “hornet” is translated in the singular in seven out of eight translations available here. The Message even capitalizes it.
Joshua 24:12
This section is entitled The Covenant Renewed at Shechem
8 “‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.
11 “‘Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands. 12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. 13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’
Translation choices here are getting a little tricky: nine translations use “the hornet,” and the Lexham English Bible specifically emphasizes the hornet. New Living Translation and New Century Version have both replaced “the hornet” with “terror.” A footnote available here reads: Traditionally, “the hornet” (so KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV) but the precise meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain (cf. NEB “panic”).
In summary
There’s a hornet (someone very powerful and very dangerous) in the beehive (Heaven), but it isn’t Crowley.
This is (in my humble opinion) some strong evidence that the intended symbolism behind Aziraphale’s name is a reference to the Hornet that goes before the people of Israel, slaying the Amorites, et cetera, to claim their land. There is some apparent parallelism between an angel clearing out the unfaithful to make way for the chosen people in the Exodus, and an angel whose major responsibility it is to bring about the Second Coming, the Day of Judgment which will also result in the wiping out of those who are found wanting.
The Final Fifteen, again
Aziraphale could not have said no. He could not have refused the Metatron and run away with Crowley. Aziraphale is the Hornet that goes before the righteous to rid the world of the unrighteous.
This was always Aziraphale’s destiny.

Author’s note: we live in interesting times. My use of the word “Israel” and surrounding language in this meta is strictly with regard to ancient Biblical texts as they are relevant to a fictional work, Good Omens. None of this should be construed as an opinion regarding current political events.

By Annie Norman
The public learned last fall of one particularly controversial element of United States Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s 10-year plan for the U.S. Postal Service that would be rolling out soon. Essentially, the function of sorting and delivering mail would be consolidated into regional centers, leaving empty former sorting space in the back of post offices. No layoffs were announced.
At first glance, this sounds innocuous, but seasoned postal observers suspect that with less activity happening at smaller or rural post offices, they become vulnerable to a reduction in hours or closure. This leads to the kind of job losses that initially present as don’t worry, we’ll relocate you to the regional center but are experienced by postal workers as if I don’t commute two hours there and back each day or more, I lose my job.
In response, The Save the Post Office Coalition, which I coordinate, wrote to the Secretary of the USPS Board of Governors to ensure the board was made aware of emails from 160,000 postal customers across the country urging them to stop the disastrous elements of DeJoy’s plan before it’s too late.
Among the several thousands of personalized messages, we highlighted a handful in our note:
“The USPS provides a service to the public. It was never intended to be a profit-making business. I’m disappointed & ashamed at where politics seem to be taking us.”
— David B. (veteran) Seattle, Washington.
“As a former United States Postal Service employee and as someone who regularly uses the [USPS], I ask you to do something about DeJoy, who continues to degrade everything about the postal service — especially the service part of it.”
— Kristin F. in Cottonwood, Indiana.
“It is important for seniors like me to be able to count on a dependable means of getting medications without having a further drain on our resources.”
— Peter L. in Los Angeles, California.
“I believe that a well supported and functioning post office is a hallmark of a healthy, advanced nation. Stop DeJoy’s undemocratic plan now before it’s too late.”
— Janet M. in Downers Grove, Illinois.
“We senior citizens depend on USPS. Please help keep it viable.”
—Joanne L. in Akron, Ohio.
“Our postal service should be about serving us rather than serving businesses that give it money.”
— Douglas L. in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
We have yet to hear a response or acknowledgement that the messages from the public were received, and DeJoy continues to make it clear that he doesn’t want anyone asking questions about his 10-year plan.
On the same day that USPS leadership received our coalition’s messages, the Postal Regulatory Commission issued a public inquiry order to DeJoy asking that USPS provide details on the sorting and delivery changes under his plan. In the order, the Commission said it “notes that stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding a lack of a forum to explore the impacts of these proposed changes.”
DeJoy responded with an objection to the Commission’s inquiry. On May 17, DeJoy delivered congressional testimony for the first time in nearly two years at a hearing of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations. Rep. Summer Lee asked him why USPS is objecting. In his response, DeJoy was openly hostile toward the postal regulator, accusing them of actively participating “in the destruction of [USPS].”
Just last month, DeJoy sat down with the press for a 90-minute interview where he once again doubled down with an adversarial attitude toward postal regulators who seek details for the public on his 10-year plan, calling the Commission’s inquiry “nonsense,” saying, “We don’t need to be babysat.”
On May 22, DeJoy delivered the keynote address at the 2023 National Postal Forum where he spoke at length touting his efforts to implement “dramatic changes” and increase the pace of his 10-year plan. The postmaster general told the audience that “dramatic changes must be done at a pace, and with a tenacity that is rarely seen.” However, these changes are a mystery to many, and for a public institution, this mystery is dangerous.
If the past is any guide, the effects of potential post office closings and reduced hours will be devastating, particularly to rural and Indigenous communities. The Save the Post Office Coalition organized a petition to the Postal Regulatory Commission and the USPS Office of Inspector General urging them to stop DeJoy’s “dramatic changes” and demand public input, and so far has received over 131,000 signatures from the public who regularly use the postal service.
The bottom line is that the public has a right to more transparency and input in the decision-making process at a public institution. This requires engagement with said public — which DeJoy is actively resisting. When you put a rich, white, private-sector executive who isn’t used to public accountability and cooperation in charge of a treasured public institution, such a clash might be inevitable. It’s plain DeJoy doesn’t have the temperament for public service.
Communities across the nation want dramatic change at the post office too, but that dramatic change is not to be secretive or a surprise; it must be a shift toward protecting and expanding the public footprint and services available at the post office to meet new needs and change with the times. The People’s Postal Agenda outlines a framework for an expanded USPS that includes things like postal banking, expanded nonbank financial services like bill payment and ATMs, WiFi in parking lots, and public electric vehicle charging.
We still remember former President Donald Trump’s plan to privatize the post office, right before he put his thumb on the scale to have his donor DeJoy appointed as postmaster general. We also remember DeJoy’s role in sowing public fear and uncertainty in the vote-by-mail process by slowing down the mail and then sending out mailers to voters that meeting their state’s deadline would not ensure their vote would arrive in time to be counted, causing him to be sued by the NAACP and Public Citizen, as well as secretaries of state.
There is nothing to suggest that DeJoy has abandoned the privatization vision of the people who got him the job. So it’s our job as citizens to make absolutely sure any upcoming “dramatic changes” to the post office don’t shrink and privatize the institution but protect and expand it for generations to come.

January 1968 - Date Nights
Looks like De and Carolyn went out for some swanky nights in late January 1968. First to see Mel Torme at the famous Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel (article appeared 20 January 1968):
Tumblr media
Next for dinner at "Dino's Lodge" which was Dean Martin's restaurant on Sunset (article appeared 31 January 1968):
Tumblr media
A description found says "The tinkle of cocktail glasses… the aroma of fine food… murmurs of sophisticated conversation…waiters dressed smartly in black pants and red jackets with gold buttons… This mood of genteel elegance pervaded Dino's Lodge on the Sunset Strip Saturday night."
In case you were wondering what was served in these places, check out the menus:

The inflation calculator (1968 vs 2023) says $1.75 is $15.48 (hors d'oeuvres), $4.00 is $35.38 (chicken entrees), $6.00 is $53.07 (NY sirloin/filet mignon), and $9.50 is $84.02 (rack of lamb for 2).

Season 2 of Star Trek had finished filming early January 1968 and had not yet been renewed for the third season (the writing campaign was going strong though). De and Carolyn were probably out celebrating the end of filming and also De's birthday (January 20.)
Both articles were from the Los Angeles Evening Citizen News.

A showdown between finales!
Cerenysus:
We begin in the Autumn Ring, with Irina’s mind poisoned by the corruption on the ritual by her sister, Heradecia.
She summons living spells and tries to turn Fia into a book. Fia finally uses the time stop scroll and uses it to buff herself to hell. Zirk invisibly fires from behind Irina. Hank stays consistent. Heradecia teleports out.
We then find the Hexbuds, approaching the scorched grove where they can find her surrogate mother. They share an intense closed-loop hug, and turn to face her. Jabari stays back. Tarragon gets close. Corbeaux gets trapped by bony hands. They move around the space, taking damage for each other and attempting to stop her spells. 3 soldiers, capable of fighting like 300. The Hexblood Centurions.
Back in Autumn, Hank goes down because he’s the only one visible. Irina strikes while he’s down, taking a death save. And, as @theatricuddles sent me in an ask, Fia only turns to strike Irina after that moment.
After many rounds of battle, Irina is finally unconscious, thanks to a soft finish by Fia. She is held in Fia’s arms, as Zirk prepares to take off the crown. Fia says, "Foolish tenderness, but I'm going to cast Sanctuary on Irina". (thanks to @theatricuddles for the quote reminder). In the words of Murph, “we’re leaving it up to a Caldwell roll.” No one stays sitting in the two-dio. Zirk comes close. Makes a deal with a winter fairy. Fails again. Dies. At some point, Lou Wilson stands up from the table and puts his head against a closet.
Jabari is put under a banishment spell, and Tarragon and Corbeaux have a difficult time taking her on just the two of them. Jabari realizes he’s in a bad place when the toads are wet, and works hard to get himself out.
Henry is given a chance to get the crown. Fia tells him not to. She sees what protecting Irina has cost her and cannot let it continue. Henry refuses. He takes the risk. He gets the crown. Zirk is revivified by Fia. Irina, back in control of herself, teleports them to her sister.
Hank gets some hits on Heradecia. Corbeaux nearly goes down, and is saved by Tarragon’s Death Ward. Jabari screamed “let’s kill her” upon his return, and is able to do just that, trisecting her.
The Hexbuds return to Outerborough. Jabari becomes Chancellor. The Hexbloods become his cabinet. They have a ritual to atone their mother.
The Third Mates assign Bukvar to sort the souls and make sure no one gets stuck waiting, as souls had been for years. Hank gets his divorce. Zirk works harder on the all-cure. They get their boat, and head to sea. Irina and Fia make it official.
Heart of the World:
The Boobs take the Stormborn to the Court of Gods. They write letters to their loved ones and put them in the contingency cubby.
After a bit of a difficult trek, they happen upon a wall where they can hear the wishes and prayers of the citizens of Bahumia. They offer a “We are here for you” in return, and are rejuvenated by the reaction to their presence.
Once they get close, they call their berserkers. Moonshine turns them into elephants, then summons pixies to make the elephants fly. The Titans of Bahumia fly into battle Thiala on elephants. (Murph is given the chance to leave Emily over any of that bullshit if he so pleases).
The battle with Thiala begins. She brings back Galad. Hardwon does 297 freaking damage in the first turn. 1,082 total by the end of the fight. Moonshine uses cantrips where they count. Bev takes on his own fungal form, and eventually casts a bonus action revivify on Hardwon. Balnor dukes it out with some angels.
They see what the mind of Thiala wants them to experience. I cannot do the flashbacks as much justice as @misslevel, so here are those comments on them from last round.
Thiala takes a second form. Uses Alanis and Ulfgar to harness their energy and make things worse. Tries to actually destroy Melora’s heart, holding the world together. Moonshine uses Handy Andy to steal Erlin, he’s freed from the gem, and able to help heal everyone. Bev, Balnor, and Hardwon keep swinging.
Nearing the end and fearing things will get so much worse (Balnor and Hardwon keep going down), Moonshine casts Shapechange and turns into a Gold Dragon. She eats Thiala.
The Titans of Bahumia return their divine heart fragments to Melora, as they were just borrowing it. They give Pelor his heart back, resurrecting him. They save the last one for the Dusk Mother, and give her rule over the one hells, renaming it The Ruby Dawn.
Old Alanis, the traveler, returns, and asks Balnor if he’s ready. He says tearful goodbyes and returns to his timeline, ready to destroy the hounds and save his village. “It’s okay, Balnor. I knew like all the most powerful things in this world, I was only borrowing you.”
We move forward in time. They start finishing off Akarot. Set up the ritual to destroy the Hellfire Crown. Hardwon visits his father in Kord’s Great Hall. Bev and Erlin get to be kids.
A year later, they return to Moonstone for the Jamboreen.
Moonshine reacquaints herself with the dragon she hatched and invites him to live with her at the Crick. Hardwon asks for the same offer, and it is given quickly. They read Balnor’s letter by the fire. Our story then ends where it began, in The Hungry Trout Tavern.

....as this took forever, it also took a bit of an...elongated form...so to speak. Also this presented an opportunity to add an additional chapter to an already existing piece. Color me indulgent during illness~
How was it possible that Skull actually looked worse in the aftermath of the Grid Shattering and Drakkon being removed from their dimension?
youtube
The other Soulmates that were given a Separation by the spy and the Coinless Generals were doing fine. Had actually found a kind of peace in knowing when and where their Other had died, could survive through the aftermath if they so chose (Kat was already a survivor after losing Tanya; a few of the sentries Skull had helped--Casey Rhodes, and Robert James, and T.J. Johnson--doing the best they could with new Bonds formed from the ashes of what could have been and so grateful) and were helping rebuild their world from the rubble left at their feet.
But Billy had kept his ear to the ground and his eyes wide open and, though he had only spoken to Skull once after Kim had ascended the throne in all the hubbub and excitement of a new world, had been made aware of a growing sense of dread for his--
He wasn't the only one who noticed.
Bulk might have been occupied with his days helping out Kimberly, providing a shoulder she needed to hold onto and an ear to listen to her worries; as good as any Soulmate, though neither of them had the Marks and therefore could find whoever they wanted--but he had found himself sharing a look with Billy quite often after the genius was returned to himself and no longer had to clothe himself like one of Drakkon's favorite dolls and was still recovering the pieces of himself he'd lost while under the same spell of obedience as Kimberly.
It was usually after long days of redirecting sentry energies to protect the people who still hated them, or getting the Coinless to work with citizens who were still under the impression that Drakkon would return and punish them for helping the other; in doorways that looked down onto the pavilions that had cropped up along the palace streets (to give some semblance of order and direction among the Sentries and Coinless and volunteers) and out into the city, or windows that looked out into the bazaars that were much less rigid in expectations because one person for another was simply looking to trade what they had for what they needed. The both of them spotting that tall body, that black hair, those fox eyes and that soft smile that put everyone else at ease.
They both missed him, and they both saw the differences.
Billy had felt that neck snap before the last battle Drakkon had on the moon, and Bulk could easily recall that tan skin and shine in black hair.
Skull had been healthier Before.
Now they both saw that he was practically a ghost, skin gray and hair lackluster, but they couldn't understand why.
Until Adam Park finally walked right up to Billy after a bad day, sentries having bricks thrown at them by civilian and Coinless alike along the farther reaches of Angel Grove. He mentioned Skull having paused outside of an old house, ramshackle and with the roof half collapsed into it, smiling at how much of the wide lawn had been taken over by wildflowers and weeds, tall grass encompassing what would have been an area to park cars while the trees had tripled without the train tracks having been used in decades. He'd pointed out one of the oldest trees to Adam before the bricks had been thrown, knife marks still visible to show the scrapings of 'Skull+Bones Forever' and mentioning that he still had the pocket knife when a brick had almost bounced off his helmet and they had to address the civilians without shooting at them.
He had been happy and then he'd been drained sad and Adam hadn't been able to convince him to eat rice pudding or even the smallest cream cake when they got back to the mess hall and he'd wandered off to his rooms and, "Are you ever going to talk to him on your own or am I going to have to drag you to him?"
"I..." Billy practically choked, wringing his hands together and looking so horribly young in the face of such anger, "I didn't think he'd want to see me, let alone talk to me."
Adam looked...drawn. Sad and angry.
Then he picked Billy up like a sack of rice, slung him over his shoulder, and marched down the halls towards Skull's room with the simple grumble of, "You're so damn stupid."
*
When Adam dropped Billy in front of Skull's door, he also took a small silk handkerchief wrap of custard creams out of his pockets and thrust them into the other man's hands, "While you're here, do try and get him to eat. He might actually concede to you."
Then he pounded on the door, bounded out of sight down the hall, and left Billy vibrating in something not too different to terror as he waited for the door to open.
And waited...
And found himself a little chagrined at having to knock again when he counted to sixty and there was still no movement, adding in a little, "Hello," for good measure.
Except that when he knocked, the door keened on its hinges to open for itself, and he found his eyes squinting into the rather spartan room with the windows all covered in cloth and the bed occupied.
Though only just.
Billy found a little side table bare much like the rest of the room so perfect to set down the food, and shut the door as he stepped over the sentry uniform pieces strewn in a carpet leading up to the bed. The red and black like little pavings of blood and tar against the grey and white, all cement and industrial.
The blanket was more like a second bed sheet draped over Eugene's long, imposing, scarily vacant form. It imperceptibly rose and fell with his very slight breathing, but other than that, Billy felt very much like he was staring at a color drained, old fashion photo of a dead body from back when it was tradition to capture the image of a person before their soul departed entirely.
He stood for what felt like an eternity, eyes tracing old scars, crow's feet, grey hairs; the delicate stream of light that formed a line under the window veering with the sun until it was gone and there was only blue twilight, but Billy was unable to wake the man.
The shades of what had been were too firm in his psyche that his next step in choice couldn't have been stalled or diverted any more than the sun rising.
He knew all the things that had happened when he wasn't in control of his own mind were quietly shut up in a back closet of his subconscious until he was willing to deal with them--the tortures, the rapes, the executions, the way Drakkon used to fondle Billy and Kim and make them act like it was enjoyable--but with Eugene it was always different, had always been different, since they had first met and felt a connection Billy's parents had often talked about, but Billy had ignored until the tide had turned and he was returned to something like himself.
Adam was right, he was an idiot, and Eugene had more or less spent the last thirty (not twenty, though he would have given a king's ransom to a god to change that) years paying for it in ways both big and small.
Black magic could save a life when a soulmate went away, but it couldn't stop the pain of separation and missing them. Let alone when they were so close as to be able to touch, but one was scared and the other was used to waiting (knowing also that it seemed the universe was adamant that what he might want, he was not going to get).
Taking a deep breath, as though he was about to step into fire and lava, Billy took his glasses off to set them on the side table.
Turning back to where he left the custard creams, he unwrapped the paper folding holding them together and removed two, wandering back over to the side of the bed, placing one cream between his teeth and squatting down so he was eye level with Eugene's face.
Not thinking much about reflexes and survival instincts and how Billy recalled once almost getting knifed by a black sentry Drakkon once had him call on after thirty-two hours awake that had been exhausted and didn't appreciate being woken up in their sleeping quarters by one of the proverbial bogeymen; Billy touched the smooth bottom of his finger to Eugene's nose and followed the line of it up between his eyebrows, over his right eye, swirled it under his ear and held the crook of his jaw in his palm. The side of his thumb brushed at his cheekbone and Billy was met with storm born eyes blinking open to look at him.
There wasn't much in the way of affect, or in surprise, but Billy forged on, chewing his own custard cream into his mouth and offering up the other in hand much like he would have with a feral animal that looked even half as starved and out of sorts as Eugene, "Adam says that you haven't been eating. I come as emissary for his cause."
There was hesitation, those eyes deep as a well taking him in like Billy wasn't really there.
And then his sighed out like a bear on the edge of spring, turning his face to nuzzle into Billy's palm (like when they were children and Billy used to sneak into bed with him during sleepovers, Skull curling all those long limbs around him and Billy's hands always ending up braced to his chest or holding his face like a stuffed animal) and his long arm reached out from under the blanket to take the offering.
A naughty, childish leftover part of Billy took hold and he declined the grasping fingers and the open palm (by the Grid, he had big hands--and big feet from what Billy could see at the rim of the blanket) and lifted it to Eugene's lips himself. Not saying, but mentally echoing, 'Open wide.'
Eugene was not inclined towards a voice in the back of his head--like Billy had once been--to answer to the call of servitude and obedience, but he had also never once denied Billy something that he had really wanted, craved enough to cry about, or gasped in excitement over.
He hadn't when they were five and Billy cried at other children stepping on ants and had helped the small blond protect their living area for two weeks until the other much bigger kids had gotten bored with them. He hadn't when Billy was sick with the flu and couldn't go camping like his parents had arranged, so he did his best to set up a tent on the roof of the Cranston house and created a makeshift fire held in a coffee can on top of a cluster of rocks so they could roast marshmallows and still look at the stars like they were somewhere else. He hadn't when the world was falling apart around them, families and the other Rangers separated and was having a nervous breakdown because he needed help and there was nobody else except for someone he'd abandoned standing before him and asking what he could do, 'No, seriously, what do you need?'
This had not changed from that moment to the present when Eugene blinked and opened his mouth and accepted the food, face pinching at the edges and looking as uncomfortable as any eating disordered person with the swallow, but not looking panicked or offended as Billy swallowed his own and smiled, bringing both hands up to hold the sides of Eugene's face with a pause of something...more.
(It was always More with them, in spite of Billy once being extremely stupid and prideful and Eugene reacting with aggression and skittishness after a hurt neither of them could explain the source of.)
"I have more. Do you want some, or do you want to go back to sleep?"
Eugene blinked, brought a hand up to one of Billy's, and held it there a moment, thinking but still looking Billy in the eye like he always did.
Then his eyes closed while the rest of him remained in place, the ghost of Billy hoping for a longer stay hushed, and he knew the answer before the words even formed.
"Sleep. I'm sorry, but I'm... I'm just really tired."
(That little tether of blue light inside Billy, and the little string of orange inside Skull, at once gave a feather light brush against heartbeats and glowed beneath the skin as Billy gave a nervous, sad little smile; pulling the blanket back into place and helping Skull return to where he was comfortable in the dark.)
Billy didn't hesitate, just bent down to give a graze of lips across Eugene's cheek as he went back to the door, tapping the rest of the creams on his way out with intent, "I'll leave these here for when you wake up. Try to eat them, okay?"
He received no answer back, just the air of an exhale and the door's hinges turning silent behind him, lock clicking into place.
But it was... it was alright for the moment.
He was very good at plans. This gave him something to work for that didn't involve the betterment of mankind, just something he found that, walking away and grinding his teeth and twisting his fingers around each other, he had probably wanted since he was ten.
*
Two cups of coffee, Viennese Cinnamon with a helping of pure cream in one and brown sugar laced with red tinted honey in the other. A plate of wheat toast that had been buttered to perfection. And another two plates, each containing one Sunnyside up egg and two slices of thick, wood smoked bacon.
The sentries that Skull looked over (he looked over hundreds, yes, but there was only a small cluster that seemed brave or kind enough to get near him in places and times when there were no orders to be aloft in the field and carry weapons) and looked over him in turn seemed a little bit disconcerted when the former Huntsman took a seat to Skull's right and placed the food and drink before the both of them. The little auburn haired niece of the space ninja Drakkon had cut the head off was the only one that didn't squint at the meal as if it might be poisoned, and the young man that seemed to keep his blond friend from Reefside from attacking people of higher power on sight almost appeared relieved at someone actually doing something about their captain's Problems.
Billy didn't say anything as Eugene looked upon the meal and then looked up at blue eyes behind glasses, he merely took some toast and bit into it without pushing.
Eugene sighed, but still downed the coffee, ate the egg, nibbled half a piece of bacon, and took one bite of the toast before a vein in his neck flicked with his seeming recoil, dropping it back on the plate and excusing himself without a word. Merely a wave at the youngest sentries to take what they wanted from his unfinished meal.
He didn't say anything to Billy, but the man took no offense, considering and plotting as Cassidy took the short bacon, Devin the long bacon, Marah and Kapri the practically untouched toast.
Billy's own meal was finished except for the egg, which he cut four ways before sliding it over to the sentries and leaving in the opposite direction of Eugene; to plan and consider and help things along with Kim, whereas Eugene made their proposals happen.
*
Greasy and fresh pork fried rice, twin goblets of black cherries swimming in what smelled like light rose wine, a tureen that looked like it belonged to Marie Antoinette filled awkwardly with a rotisserie chicken lightly spiced and soaking its juices into mashed potatoes topped with chives an lightly dusted with garlic.
Billy knew that he was pressing his luck here, in the dinner hours, Skull's seat at a balcony window a very telling thing in that he was supposed to left alone to decompress from a day of doing his duty and helping civilians and giving orders that some of the sentries still quibbled over and a lot of the Coinless didn't think he had the authority to give.
But Billy knew that the man hadn't eaten anything since the breakfast he imposed on him the day before and there was still information to be gathered on just why the man would put himself at risk with an empty stomach, energy constantly dwindling among the people he was supposed to protect that hated him.
It couldn't be a physical health issue like cancer or internal scarring; Billy had dug into his exam history and--while it had made him vomit for a good hour at the sheer volume of x-rays and had triggered his memory of events he'd been present for--Skull technically had a clean (this being an operative word that made Billy also grit his teeth and throw and stapler out of a third floor window) bill of health.
Psychological problems were Billy's next consideration, and the fattest things he could beg Bulk to help him make on short notice would probably ring the bell for yes or no if that was the issue.
If Eugene was surprised by Billy taking a seat on the other side of the balcony after placing the food between them and setting himself up with a little bit of everything in a bowl, cracking some chopsticks and smoothing them out against each other while he waited, it didn't show across his face or his shoulders.
It might have made itself more clear in the way his fingers twitched and paused before taking up a small bowl for himself, cutting off a sliver of chicken and a dollop of potatoes; spooning over some rice that would have only filled a very small bird and taking his own sweet time with smoothing out the chopsticks offered by Billy before he used one to skewer a cherry.
He seemed to savor the tastes, noting the effort it took to make the meal and was courteous enough to compliment Billy's turn on Bulk's recipes, "He's not a fan of garlic and the chicken rub is a lot softer than he would use," but otherwise kept quiet and looked out upon the city kingdom, watched sentries going home from the day shifts and the coinless heading in for the night shift that everyone was still getting used to.
It felt odd to Billy, this quiet that followed around Skull like something halfway between a state of grace and a warning siren to the discombobulate the unwary. He'd never been this quiet Before, had seemed to detest the very notion of letting moments pass on without filling them with something like notes from life.
But he still ate the food as best he could, and Billy wouldn't break the serenity of the moment by asking something so stupid as, 'Are you alright?' or 'Are you doing better?'
Or Grid forbid Billy say the one thing he wanted after years and years of wondering, 'Is our Bond truly lost? Did you know Before? Did I break you?'
The Blue Ranger bit down so hard on his mouthful of chicken at that last thought that he almost bit clean through the ends of the chopsticks, but he yanked them out just before they splintered, holding them away from his face and glaring at them a moment.
Then he realized how ridiculous he must have looked and glanced nervously over at Skull, finding the man standing up, plate and bowl finished and a brow raised at the figure Billy cut.
(Billy was never going to get over how tall Skull got; how broad--even with the weight loss.)
"Trade you mine, if your chopsticks are leaving splinters in your mouth?"
Unable to form a coherent answer to that, Billy simply blinked and tried not to show his embarrassment as Skull handed over his own chopsticks--wiped clean on a cotton kerchief, like a gentleman, Billy couldn't help thinking--and took Billy's.
"Thank you for the meal."
He swept back into the dining hall without a sound, not even boots making taps with each step as Billy stood in place a moment longer.
Then he looked at the end of the chopsticks and had to remind himself of his purpose before his brain was overrun with the thought of indirect kisses.
Psychological ills were probably not at the high end of Skull's reasons for his lack of eating.
(Billy himself couldn't manage to finish the rest of the food by himself, so he ended up giving it to the lieutenants Johnson, Winslow, Chen, and Park on his way out of the dining hall. All of them still as houses and suspicious, save for Adam, who rolled his eyes at Billy's back and dug into the potatoes; practically inciting motion like a dog whistle at a greyhound track, the others were so quick to tuck in and hum in delight.)
*
Pineapple and gin in tiny little glasses, with tiny little umbrellas that Billy had to improvise making with wax paper and toothpicks. A fish bowl full of whole milk with the cream still on top that the poor blue ranger spent the better part of the day trying to get from the one cow in the kingdom that absolutely detested being touched. Little squares very poorly decorated with little pink hearts of strawberry-and-cream sheet cake (like the both of them knew from trying to recreate them at eight after Billy bulldozed through Little Women at Christmas and his parents weren't around to stop them).
And Adam answering Skull's door, finger held up to his lips as Skull's other favorite (everyone knew it, and nobody held it against them) sentries looked out along the door frame, all torn between irritation and a weird kind of affection for the poor blond man.
Billy thought he might cry.
"Again?"
"Out like a light halfway home from patrol duty," Adam confirmed, but, not one to waste a good meal, herded Billy in and had him set down the offerings he'd brought along to run his usual gambit of tests on the how and why of Skull's eating problem. Emotional wounds were a lot harder to diagnose, but Billy still held onto to the reality that he'd known the other the longest and had the widest window into what might set him back on course.
Billy didn't whine, but only just, as he set down the meal on the side table, hanging up his cloak as T.J. and Kai wandered over to call dibs on the little umbrella drinks, Cassidy, Devin, Marah, and Kapri fast to take a seat on all sides of the sheet cake, dipping the treats into the cream milk and all almost moaning at the decadence that they hadn't imbibed in for years.
Billy would have taken it for a true compliment if he wasn't so focused on taking a seat on the edge of the bed where Kelsey remained, the yellow sentry scooting over to give Billy room to get more comfortable at Skull's waist side, her hand, however, not letting go of the thin wrist as she counted heartbeats to ease the lot of them of their worry for their captain.
Billy only got about five seconds of taking stock of the situation, Skull looking much more pale, the lines in his face more pronounced, the grey in his hair more obvious--before Kelsey finally said what had been on mind of every sentry that gave a damn about the man and didn't care to see him suffer any longer than necessary.
"You're going about this all wrong."
"...I'm sorry?"
"He's your Soulmate. He doesn't need some grand courting display for you to prove that you care about him, he just needs you to tell him you love him."
"I'm...I'm not so sure that's true."
"That's okay," Marah chirped, swallowing down a mouthful of cake and smiling much more than she often did, "We're sure."
"Yeah, dude," Devin piped up, meandering over with a slice of the confection for Kelsey and actually patting the Blue Ranger on the shoulder as if he hadn't spent the last twenty years as someone just as scary and terrifying as the Ranger Slayer, "Guy's been in love with you since, like, forever. I don't think it's going to be that hard to convince him if you just say boo."
"But it will," And Billy didn't even know where this free for all of information was coming from. He didn't even tell the other Rangers about his hesitation towards trying to mend bridges with Skull that Billy himself had torched into oblivion when they were young and stupid, "It will. It's all just...such a mess. I made it a mess."
There was silence, awkward and still for a moment. But then almost like a little light going off in the dark, a firefly in a field of lavender almost black at midnight, Adam cleared his throat and pointed at Billy's hand pressed to the bed.
Looking down, Billy almost jolted, soul leaving his body, as he found that in his sleep, Skull's other hand had found its way out from under the covers to touch the tips of their fingers. He was still unconscious and still exhausted in his sleep, but Billy knew the touch hadn't been there when he sat down.
When Billy allowed himself to breathe, he found his face quite wet.
When he wiped away the water out from under his glasses, he found the others in the room looking smug, endeared to both men, earnest in their gladness, and all quietly removing themselves from the room; not leaving behind a crumb or glass or anything else but the two that really needed to just...be alone together.

YOUR INVITATION HAS ARRIVED
... To the month’s most enticing event. Where positivity flows through the air and laughter can be heard at all corners of Silver City. Just beyond thick tree groves, a clearing awaits anyone who wants to experience love for the first, second, or possibly third time.
As a token of his appreciation for the citizens of Calamity, Khaos has chosen to show them just how gracious he can be. In the clearing, tables of refreshments and foods of all types, for all kinds. Bushels of colorful flowers lined the clearing; light humming sounding through the air, in a rhythm of an old romantic song. In the center, three large cauldrons set on pedestals. Above each cauldron, illuminated signs float that read: LOVE POTION.
However, when glancing at the concoctions, they all appear different. One a dusty rose color, one emerald green, and the other ocean blue. Inscriptions are carved into each of the cauldrons:
Dusty rose: the person you adore will finally see you for who you are
Emerald green: you will be drawn to the one you're meant to be with for eternity
Ocean blue: you will be shown who thinks about you most often.
The music stopped. Drink, if you so desire. Khaos’ words float through the air. But remember this... to not drink is to not gain useful information about your own life. And do not fear, these potions do not last forever. After a brief, ominous pause, the music began once more, birds sung, and brightness filled the area.
ADMIN NOTE: Good day, everyone! This is a fun event that coincides to Valentines day. You can choose to participate, or not, with the event. You can have your characters drink one of the concoctions, or not. Here is some additional information on each of the potions (information your characters DO NOT know):
Dusty rose potion: Reveals the creatures explicitly; I.e. no glamours, vampires can’t have their ‘human’ features, demons can’t hide theirs, witches emit a radioactive sort of glow. It marks them all out to each other so they can’t hide.
Emerald green potion: Your character will be drawn to the person who will be in their lives for eternity. This can be a love of their life, or an enemy. It can cause a range of emotions such as jealousy, envy, rage, or lust, depending on what you choose for your character.
Ocean blue: This potion, as described, will let you see who thinks about you the most. This could either be great, or detrimental, depending on how you want to write it out.
You have free rein to write this out for your character, and plot with others, however you decide! The potions, if chosen to drink, will last a full 24 hours. Also, there are Angelics that are keeping an eye on this event, as it is in their city. They will be ensuring no real harm comes to any of the humans who attend.
This event will last a week, starting today!
If you have any questions, you can always ask one of us admins. <3

WTNV quick rundown - 57 - The List
Breathe deep. Deeper than that. Get far below sea level and breathe. Breathe in a cave. Breathe in a deeper cave. Breathe deeper and deeper until you can’t find your way back. Welcome to Night Vale.
The List in reference is the one you were asked to remember all the way back in episode 16. It is now time to use that list. The SSP go around time asking people if they remember the list and saying 'oh boy you're in trouble' if they don't.
The sun disappears, not covered up, it's just gone and everyone is ordered to recite the list. Cecil takes everyone to the weather so he too can start reciting the list.
Everyone seems fine and gathers in Mission Grove Park to check that everyone they know is ok. The SSP throw tear gas at the crowd and announce that today was actually just a drill.
Weather: "Upside Down World" by Paisley Rae soundcloud.com/paisley-rae
Harrison Kip, adjunct professor of archeology at NVCC, announced that he has found something out in the desert but won't elaborate right now. The dig is being funded by unknown benefactors that even Sarah Sultan (president of the NVCC) says she's never met but trusts since they're funding the dig. Harrison is apparently still out in the desert, hunched over something he's muttering about in an unrecognisable language.
The Greater NV medical community announced a city-wide compaign for 'Meatless Mondays' to combat the environmental and health impact a high meat diet has. However, they seem to have mistaken what this is supposed to mean, as rather than not eating meat citizens are encouraged to try and not be made of meat despite it being impossible, resulting in them having to shame each other as the reason the efforts didn't work in a 'Denouncing Circle'.
There's an 'exit 84B on route 800'.
Cecil has started bowling with Old Woman Josie and their little bowling league again. She tells him that construction on the new Old Opera House is going well. They have already completed the initial arches, the outer floodbanks, and the primary stables.  Nobody aside her seems to know what opera even is still.
Josie cheats at bowling by having an Erika carrying her ball down the lane and then kick over the pins. Since nobody is allowed to acknowledge the existence of angels, they have to let the strike stand.
The Man ITTJ is still walking around town but is also still not rememberable.
Cecil still misses Carlos a lot and admits he always feels uncertain and empty and with a sadness that sometimes wells up regardless of what he's doing or if there's a reason to be sad (Cecil, my good man, that sounds like depression). He joins everyone in the park with his microphone (somehow?) which he still isn't sure is attached to anything but is clearly still working so...
Also in the park are: Diane and Josh Crayton (who is a meadowlark), Jackie Fierro (from the pawn shop) who is showing Frances Donaldson (Antiques Mall owner) a cool knife that someone pawned by running in shouting “Hide this” and running out, hooded figures lurking along the corner of the park whilst pointing at various people to leering and laughing, Janice (who Cecil is happy to see) along with Abby and Steve (who Cecil only tolerates) and Janice's friends - Edmund and Megan and Patrice.
Cecil also listens in on and talks about two people called Wilson and Amber being happy to see that each other survived.
Stay tuned next for a surprised man shuffling papers frantically and saying “uh” into a mic he did not expect to be on. Good night, Night Vale. Good night.

Displaces Residents from Hollywood Apartment
Dozens of residents, many senior citizens, were displaced after a massive Hollywood apartment fire last week. Many were staying at a makeshift shelter set up by the American Red Cross. However, they were informed that the shelter was shut down on Friday. The Red Cross helped residents find a new apartment, but the rent is too steep. Displaced residents claim their apartment building was in such disrepair that the smoke detectors did not sound off when the fire broke out. Some residents have broken down, and the apartment manager has not issued a comment on the residents' claims regarding the building's smoke detectors. Read more.

((Drow have become a particular favourite of mine in the last 2 years or so. My fondness for elves oddly enough comes from a game about dwarves that is very anti-elf propaganda especially in the fandom. Tieflings are very fun! I'm one of those heathens who entertain the idea of taking a lot of creative liberties with their visual design. After all, what is the point of playing the ttrpg imagination game if you've no imagination eh.
I shall let that comment slide… for now… but watch out!))
Dearest Barkeep,
You're a fun one, I'll give you that. You wish to discourage my intrusions, and yet also wish me luck in not being caught. What's the matter, old man? Are you so bored buried under all this paperwork that the only thing that entertains you is a break-in? I'd hate to disappoint you, so I'll look forward to receiving word from you once you've discovered where I've hidden this note. Can't make it too easy on you, but I doubt it will prove much of a challenge for a knight such as yourself to find.
And the questions? My dear barkeep, it would be too dead a giveaway if I were to answer honestly. But I'll ponder the idea of leaving you a clue. As for dishonest answers, I'll listen to whatever you listen to, perhaps I'll even sit outside the door and lend an ear to the next bard you fancy to spend your gil on. I just love white. Pristine pure white. All this snow everywhere as far as the godsdamned eye can see. I don't know how you can stand this view. There's nothing to see. No wonder you're bored. Coeurls are lithe and sneaky. And cute. Like me, no? Hmm. No, on second thought they'd be terrible at stalking your halls unnoticed. A lovely little cherry tree could liven the space up in here, alas it would probably die by how dark you keep the space. Pity. I only drink pure spring water. Hydration… love it.
Feel free to ask more if you feel so curiously inclined, although I cannot guarantee you'll receive the truth in turn. Unfortunately I must be off now, I believe I just heard your front door. Returning from the Humming Grove cafe I expect.
Adieu.
// Your description of a game about dwarves that's very anti-elf reminds me of Dwarf Fortress, I haven't played the game myself but I've seen some stuff on it, then again, Dwarves hate on Elves in most pieces of media, so it could be any game. I too love taking lots of liberties with the design of my Tiefling characters, it's one of the reasons I like them so much, the "official" limitations that WotC put on Tiefling skintones and the kind are naught but a long forgotten "suggestion" to me, I played through Curse of Strahd as a snow white Tiefling with sun-like yellow eyes, he was a Life Cleric, I know it sounds pretty basic and way too overboard with the holy theme but it was immensely fun. (Thinking back on it I could've taken so many more liberties, like horns that form a sort of halo, or take the Tiefling variant that has wings and make them feathery angelic wings, at that point I could've just played an Aasimar though, but ah, perhaps it would have been too much, although maybe there could have been a subplot about the citizens of Barovia seeing my character as a sort of angel having come to save them, sounds too main charactery though and I wouldn't have liked to take attention away from my fellow players)
Ehm, I rambled a bit there, but to conclude the ooc part of this, dear anon, please tell me about your favorite DnD character, no matter if it was yours or one belonging to someone you played with! (If it doesn't give too much away, of course) // A good day to you, my ever so secretive patron.
I will say, when I didn't find a letter of yours in my paperwork today I was a little disappointed, yet when I was getting ready to leave my office to attend a meeting with my Count I got stung by a thorn of the rose you placed in my Uniforms pockets, for a second I thought it was poisoned and I was victim to an assassination attempt, but when I found your letter in the selfsame pocket my suspicions were proven false, or were they?
Your confusion on the topic of your intrusions is justified, but the explanation for it is quite simple, I do not mind your trespassing in the slightest, I quite appreciate this exchange of letters, but what kind of Knight-Captain would I be if I didn't take precautions after there has been a break-in to my office? Many knights of similar positions in other houses of Ishgard keep their office under constant watch, I am already a lot more forgiving than them by only having my knights check my office if they pass by it during their patrols, though that is quite frequent.
Your answers are intriguing for sure, though I shall not tell you which parts exactly, I shall keep my suspicions about your identity to myself until I have actual proof, therefore I cannot let the opportunity to ask more questions pass, even if they may be answered with little truth.
So tell me, do you fancy any particular book, or perhaps even a series of books, I noticed that someone browsed through my collection recently, it must have been you. Are you perhaps a combatant of any kind, and if you are, please do tell me what your preferred weapon is. And lastly, I do not expect a clear answer to this, since it would be boring, why are you so inclined to stay anonymous, you put quite a lot of effort into not revealing your identity, even when you have supposedly visited my tavern already, or have you? Perhaps we shall see each other in my tavern tonight, but I wouldn't know, would I? Signed, Mephiston Godefroy
