#annabeth chase appreciation post
Annabeth having the strength to recognize the generational curse, that the gods have been passing down through generations of demigods, and the strength to do something about it.
She recognized the way that the gods abuse each other and their children, and she recognized the way that she had been copying that, by treating people around her like means to an end instead of people. Which wasn't right, but it wasn't her fault, she's 12 and that's the only example of power she's ever been exposed to.
Percy comes into play and she realizes that there are things more powerful than the gods, and ways to reach your goals without viewing people as chess pieces.
Percy resents his mom a little for raising him away from the gods the way she did, but Annabeth sees it as the blessing it is because HE showed her there was another way. She has never had the option to choose someone she loves over the gods will, or to choose anything over the gods' will. But Percy changes that for her. She realizes the option was always there and she never knew.
The VERY FIRST THING she does once the realization kicks in is take advantage of that knowledge and take a stand against a god. Not only that, she shakes off years of only doing things for Athena's approval. She refuses to leave without Percy, even with a god telling her to go, and the knowledge that if she leaves with the shield, she'll be redeemed in her mother's eyes.
She sacrifices all that for Percy because "HE ISN'T THAT WAY."
Because now she knows she doesn't have to be that way either. She has a choice; I love her because she's strong enough, and brave enough to make the hard choice and break the curse.

annabeth chase is muscular. btw. she's been at camp since seven years old, she can beat percy in hand-to-hand combat, she could climb the lava wall at twelve, she held the fucking sky, she survived contless monsters and got out of tartarus alive. just because she's usually the brains of the operation doesn't mean she can't fight and you people forget it too often.

Grover is the satyr equivalent of 12-14 in the first book. He is a child.
When he was tasked with bringing Thalia to camp and failed he would have been at most 9 years old. He was traumatized by her death, and he no doubt blamed himself for it.
He was shamed by the cloven council at (max) 9 years of age for a death he would not have been strong or skilled enough to prevent. He knows the counsel would have preferred that he died trying to save her which likely would have ended up in his and Thalia's deaths. He sometimes wonders if he would have preferred that as well.
When he is trying to get Percy to camp safely Percy hears him muttering "sixth grade- they never make it past sixth grade!" A reference to Thalia and his first mission. Grover is knocked unconscious due to the minotaur but thankfully Percy is able to get to camp without dying. However, he loses his mom in the process. Another death Grover has on his conscience before she comes back.
Thalia, against all odds comes back as well and he's able to feel some kind of relief. He gets to see her alive again and can almost not feel guilty anymore. He starts to calm down, able to ease his own anxiety with the help of Percy and Annabeth. He works on no longer feeling like a failure.
Then he finds the Di Angelo's. The third and fourth big three kids Grover has stumbled across. He tries to hide his anxiety as he gets the two very young kids to camp, focusing on his task because he would not fail again.
They arrive safely to camp unfortunately at the cost of Annabeth being taken. He doesn't know what to feel. It seems his loved ones safety always comes with a sacrifice.
He's the first to volunteer for the quest for her after Thalia. He knows Percy wants to go as well and will not be happy that he can't but a part of Grover wants Percy to stay at camp. Stay where it's safe as selfish as that may be.
Of course his hopes of Percy staying put were unrealistic and he knew that. Percy was far too loyal to rest while someone he loves is in danger. He could sense Percy's anger and restlessness as soon as they left and he knew his best friend would catch up to them very soon.
Grover is now on a quest with three kids he found. Three kids he was tasked with protecting. Three kids from a group of five where two are fated to die.
Bianca is lost and Grover knows that unlike the last two, there is no hope for her return. Even then he digs through the rubble desperately, not stopping until Thalia pulls him away.
They are able to rescue Annabeth and return her to safety. But as always, the safety of his loved ones came with a cost. A sacrifice someone else had to make.

Rewatching episode six and Lin really does such a good job with Hermes
When he first greets them he’s all happy go lucky still having fun gambling and entertaining himself but as soon as annabeth says Luke’s name his face drops. He gets a look of guilt that only a parent can have.
Talking to annabeth and Percy, especially when annabeth says like hates Hermes you can see the pain in his face and how he’s trying to conceal it. The changes in his voice when he’s talking to them and his facial expressions so clearly express what he’s feeling and Lin does such a good job at conveying the guilt of an absent father who wishes he could have been there.
“Do you know what that feels like? To be so close to someone you love, knowing neither of you has a choice but to keep hurting each other?”
He knows that they both know. He reminds Percy of his moment, and annabeth physically recoils when he tries to do the same to her. The intensity in his face as he asks the question shares how much he knows he hurt Luke and how awful he feels about it.
“It is very hard for a god to feel powerless.”
LMM was a perfect choice for Hermes and how serious the show is compared to the books.

spoilers for the pjo series/tv show
idk if people talk abt this but like
everyone annabeth loves always disappears (except for grover, we love grover) some come back, but for some amount of time, they’re all gone.
of course, this isn’t 100% true, but for the og series it def is
Her entire family leaves. technically, it was her that left, but same principle. her father stopped loving her. (yes ik that they start to rekindle their relationship but that isn’t the point)
luke and thalia, the ones who took her in, her family, they leave too. luke betrays her, almost brings the end of the world. thalia sacrifices herself for annabeth and luke and gets turned into a tree. she does come back, but she dies right in front of her.
this is true for both the tv show and the books, but specifically hoo.
athena leaves her too. in the tv show, she abandoned annabeth when she needs her most, when she’s depending on her, in the arch. the same is true in hoo. athena abandons her. it wasn’t 100% her fault in hoo, but still.
so imagine how she feels when percy disappears. the multiple times he sacrifices himself, when annabeth thinks he’s gonna die.
and in the lost hero/son of neptune? when he disappears for 9 MONTHS??? that must’ve been devastating. finally they get a happy ending, finally they can be happy, and then they’re robbed of it. her love, the one who’s never truly abandoned her, disappears. for a LONG time.
i think about this series too much

"Go back to sleep, you two," ordered Annabeth then. "Who do I wake for second watch?" "Me," Percy offered, but this time he didn't manage quite as well to hold back a yawn. "Leave Grover to his beauty sleep." "Dude... " "He's right. You're a growing satyr, you need your eight hours," Annabeth agreed. "I'm older than both of you?" "Shush." ' - percy, annabeth and grover and their quasi-sleepovers through the years
i am back at it again with another sleepover fic but this time it's a childhood favourite coming back in full swing and no one can stop me

dreamless cravings
(click here to read on ao3)
Although Annabeth Chase hated admitting it, she was a hopeless romantic.
It was just so easy to be that. Especially when Percy Jackson, her boyfriend, her partner, her soulmate, was literally the definition of what a hopeless romantic should fall for. He was sarcastic, funny, smart, and handsome (so fucking handsome). It killed Annabeth nearly everytime that she looked at him and half the time whenever she met his eyes that were seagreen she swears up and down her breath feels like it’s stolen right out of her lungs. He was perfect, so perfect.
And she missed him so much.
Annabeth could barely keep her eyes open as she sat on the beach near Camp Half-Blood. She was exhausted. All she wanted was a second alone to clear her head but for the past four months the only thing that she could bring herself to focus on was trying not to forget his voice, his smile, his laugh. The ocean waves were the closest she would get to remembering him because he always smelled like the ocean and if Annabeth closed her eyes and was exhausted enough, she could swear she could almost feel him sitting right beside her and wrapping his arms around her.
Annabeth didn’t realize her eyes were fluttering closed until she opened them and saw Piper McLean kneeled in front of her, her choppy brown hair falling around her face and her kaleidoscope eyes being stupidly mesmerizing as usual.
“Hey,” Piper said softly. There was a soothing nature to her voice and Annabeth knew she was using her charmspeak abilities only subtly and Annabeth couldn’t even complain because it felt nice to be washed over with her voice. It distracted her. “Come on, let's get you to bed.”
Camp was bathed in golden light from the late afternoon sun. It was the time of day when everything at camp had slowed down and it was quiet. It was the time of day that she could always find Percy just relaxing by the water, knowing Annabeth would find him in some way or another. It was the reason she found herself near the water so often now, she hoped that maybe one day he’ll just appear again and the roles would be reversed and he would find her near the water instead.
At the entrance to her cabin, Annabeth stopped abruptly, making Piper nearly trip.
“Annie?” Piper asked.
“I don’t want to go to bed,” Annabeth mumbled and she rubbed her eyes. “And don’t charmspeak me into doing it.”
She heard Piper inhale.
Annabeth sat herself down on the steps of cabin six and lowered her head into her hands, resting against her knees. She could hear the creak of the steps as Piper moved to sit beside her, resting her head against Annabeth in that comforting way she always did whenever Annabeth got like this.
Annabeth didn’t realize she was crying until she sniffled. Piper gently hugged Annabeth’s arm when she heard that but she said nothing. She had already comforted her so many times but no words truly comforted Annabeth. No, she wouldn’t be okay until she saw him again and knew he was okay.
That boat couldn’t be finished fast enough.
“I’m so scared,” Annabeth finally whispered, her voice broken. “I miss him.”
Piper moved her head, pressing her lips against the blonde girl’s shoulder. “I know,” she mumbled. “I know you do.”
Annabeth picked up her head, the cool April wind that was blowing through camp making her wet face feel cold for a second. She felt Piper pick her head up and she felt her gaze fall onto her as Annabeth stared out at the campgrounds. Some demigods were out and about still, girls in their cliques giggling and gossiping and boys… being boys.
“You’re gonna like him,” Annabeth said as she gently wiped her tears away. It wasn’t the first time she’s told Piper that and sometimes Annabeth wonders if she’s hyping up her boyfriend too much but no… no, that wasn’t even possible.
“I better,” Piper said lightly and it made Annabeth smile just a bit. “We’re doing all this for him so if I hate him I’m gonna be pissed.”
“You can hate him too if you want,” Annabeth said and rested her head against Piper’s shoulder, the daughter of Aphrodite wrapping her arm around Annabeth, again, in that comforting way that Annabeth had grown fond of. “I think I’m gonna kick his butt when I see him again. How dare he get kidnapped.”
Piper laughed. “I’ll pay to be first in line to see that.”
“I’ll give you a best friend discount,” Annabeth mumbled as she let her eyes flutter closed now, Piper’s arm around her and her voice enough to soothe the daughter of Athena. “You must be sick of me talking about him.”
“I think I’m far worse about Jason,” Piper sighed.
“Nah,” Annabeth smiled softly. “I like hearing you talk about him. That’s what best friends are for anyway. Talking about boys and stuff.”
She could hear the smile in Piper’s voice when she asked. “Best friends? I’m your best friend?”
“Don’t let it get to your head,” Annabeth whispered. She was falling asleep. This also wasn’t the first time. “You always take care of me.”
Annabeth felt Piper gently brush the blonde hair that had fallen out of Annabeth’s ponytail and into her face behind her ear as Annabeth fully drifted off now, Piper’s soft whisper of “That’s what best friends are for” being the last thing she heard before she fell into another dreamless sleep with a heavy heart.

Chapter 20 - I Battle My Jerk Relative
Theme of the day: War
Y’all I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna finish these last few chapters before the tv show comes out!! This year really didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to go but by the gods I’ll have at least one goal done no matter how skewed it got 😅 I was really like I’ll be able to read all the Olympus series in a year sjkdfhsd shit happens.
On to the chapter, “war” seems a bit self explanatory since this is when Percy confronts Ares. While Ares isn’t the one to have formed the idea of pitting the Big Three against each other, but he’s enticed by the idea of WWIII, a three-way war. Luke was lucky that it was Ares who caught him, since he probably was the easiest of the Olympians to manipulate (like hey... you could turn me in or you could let me go and start a giant war 😏). It really was a brilliant plan, as I said in my last chapter post, because it takes advantage of the Olympians’ weaknesses and paranoia. And the only way for it to go wrong was for a child to complete his quest against all odds despite having to 1) trek across the country, 2) face countless monsters, 3) thwart trickery from evil masterminds, and 4) trek across the country again. Percy really had very low chances to make it out alive. But he also lives off of spite and proving people wrong lol.
It’s interesting how each pjo book up until the final one is about Percy delaying a war in some way (kinda a theme with Riordan’s books lmao). The start of the chapter shows the beginnings of war with Hades’ army starting to rise up from the Underworld, causing massive earthquakes and fires and general chaos. Like a harbinger of a greater battle. In the immediate sense, it’s a taste of what could happen if an Olympic civil war occurs, but it’s also a bit of foreshadowing to the actual war that will take place in the future. Just like this whole book, it’s setting up what’s to come.
Continuing on that theme, Percy’s battle with Ares really culminates everything he’s learned on how to fight so far, and it sets the stage for what the readers should expect the rest of his battles to go in the series. It makes me think of the final climax of The Last Olympian, how Percy chooses to use his brain and his heart rather than his brawn against Luke, because those are the things that truly matter in the end. In this case, while Percy does use his strength and demigod powers, the reason he wins against Ares is because he uses his intelligence. It really correlates his battle with Echidna, since at that point he didn’t have enough experience to fight with more than just instincts. Actually since St. Louis, Percy has had to rely on his brain when confronting enemies, maybe that encounter influenced him to do that more. And with Ares, he finds that just his instincts doesn’t cut it. He forms a strategy vs Ares’ brute force. Percy even remembers Annabeth’s words from an earlier chapter: “Ares has strength. That’s all he has. Even strength has to bow to wisdom sometimes.” Like the old saying, the pen is mightier than the sword! Which is really ironic in this context lmao. Speaking of irony, it’s funny how Luke’s advice on how to sword fight helps Percy in his battle. The very man behind the robbery and evil plot being a reason Percy survives this quest lol. I know it’s addressed in hoo, but it’s strange how Ares is all brute force and no strategy, because the latter is such a huge part of war?? And it’s not like the ancient Greeks didn’t use strategy in their battles. But ig that’s what Athena is for 🤔
Other ways war and its effects is sprinkled in the chapter without an actual war in bullets bc I’m too tired to fully analyze these very sad things:
Percy mourning losing his mom (again)
Percy compartmentalizing his grief to focus on his mission
Despite winning his battle, Percy not feeling very victorious but instead feeling drained bc there’s no true winner for those in a war
Moving on to something a bit opposite, I can’t not talk about Annabeth giving Percy her camp necklace. Two people, potential enemies, reconciling as Annabeth says. The act is a physical symbol of Annabeth’s words from ch 16 (moreso than the oreos lol). She’s showing how she’s truly on Percy’s side, setting aside an ancient rivalry. In the face of war, Annabeth will fight with Percy and not against him. Kinda mirrors their moment in Blood of Olympus under the Parthenon doesn’t it? 🥹💖
Small things:
Can you believe a child taunted a literal god and the god fell for it
Like Ares could’ve been you’re beneath me and let him feel the wrath of Hades but instead he was like y’know what Ima fight this kid. he called me a coward.
Percy attributes his ability to observe things with his ADHD so ig that is a demigod trait. But he is extremely good at it.
Previous: Chapter 19 - We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of
