2021 books with aro and ace characters
hello! 2021 just began and i know some people really struggle with finding books with aromantic and asexual representation, so here is a list of 2021 releases i know of that have a character that’s on either spectrum (or on both!). i've decided to include both main/pov characters and some love interests since those also tend to be more major characters. all of these are of course 2021 releases that we don’t know that much about yet, but i’ve taken all of this info from statements by the authors.
main/pov characters:
WHAT WE DEVOUR by Linsey Miller (ace mc)
A BEAUTIFUL DOOM by Laura Pohl (aroace mc, demi mc)
THIS GOLDEN FLAME by Emily Victoria (aroace mc)
THE MARVELOUS by Claire Kann (not yet specified)
WHEN THE NIGHT COMES by Marieke Nijkamp (ace mc)
THE RECKLESS KIND by Carly Heath (ace mc)
THE LITTLE THIEVES by Margaret Owen (demi mc)
THE SECOND REBEL by Linden A. Lewis (sequel to The First Sister; ace mc)
RAVAGE THE DARK by Tara Sim (sequel to Scavenge the Stars; demi mc)
love interests:
MEET CUTE DIARY by Emery Lee (ace li)
DARLING by K. Ancrum (ace li)

can y'all reblog this with a book (or multiple books) in the tags that made you feel represented in any way, whether it's for mental health, lgbtqa+ identity, race/ethnicity, religion, disability, or something else? i'd love to get some book recommendations this way and i hope others can too!

i really wish websites, publishers, blogs, etc. would stop using things like “LGBTQ+” or “ownvoices” as genres, when they are not. i know this is something that bas been discussed on twitter and stuff very often, but i only see it more instead of less for some reason. books with lgbtq+ representation exist in all genres and age categories. you can use a tag on a website to denote that something has that kind of representation, but it is not a genre in the same way that “fantasy” or “sci-fi” is, and to treat it as such only alienates our community in my eyes. as for “ownvoices”, this was simply a hashtag started by author corinne duyvis to recommend books where an author shares a main character’s marginalization(s), and while publishers have started using this as a marketing term, it was never meant to be used as a genre label and in my opinion absolutely shouldn’t be. please, by all means tell people about the representation in books, but don’t use types of diversity as genre labels.

because i know many people are still confused about how six of crows and the shadow and bone trilogy are being combined into one show, here is an article where leigh bardugo and eric heisserer give some insight into that.

atla is my literal childhood and it makes me SO happy to see it trending on tumblr in 2020. netflix has made many mistakes, but putting atla on it definitely isn't one
