Today (April 8) is The International Romani Day. The Romani people (also called Rromani, Romany, Roma) are Europe's largest ethnic minority with an estimated 10-14 million people, though knowing exact figures is hard because the Romani often live on the fringes of society and many Romani choose not to disclose their ethnic identity. The Romani are unique among peoples in the sense that they've never identified with any territory or claimed they have a homeland where they came from. Their origin was somewhat a mystery for a long time (the slur "gypsy" comes from Europeans thinking they came from Egypt) but later genetic research has traced their ancestry to northern India and more specifically to the casteless Dalits. The Romani arrived in southeastern Europe by the 1300s and in western Europe by the 1400s, and in modern times the live in every continent.

The Romani experience a very high level of discrimination and marginalization and are among the most persecuted groups of people in the world. The entire history of the Romani people has been filled with ostracization, deportations, slavery, and systematic abuse ranging from segregation to forced sterilizations. Anti-Romani sentiment reached its peak during the Holocaust when 25%-50% of the European Romani were killed in the genocide called Porajmos, and some countries' Romani populations were destroyed completely. After the war the communist Central and Eastern European states tried to forcibly assimilite and suppress their Roma populations. In the present day anti-romani racism continues to be extremely common, with the studies showing most Europeans (especially Eastern Europeans) have unfavorable views of Romani people, hate crimes against them being common, and many of them living in poverty and marginalized.

People have many misconceptions about the Romani that often trace all the way back to the Middle Ages. The Romani are often confused with other itinerant groups like Irish travellers which are culturally and ethnically a completely separate group. Despite being almost synonymous with the nomadic lifestyle most Romani nowadays are not migratory, and with those who are it's often not by choice but because of persecution or homelessness. Most Romani are Christians or Muslims and they don't usually practice witchcraft, and if they do it's never to try to curse of hex anyone. There is a prevailing conception that Romani are seductive and hypersexual despite that Romani communities tend to be fairly sexually conservative. Fetishization harms especially Roma women who are often victims of sexual violence. While it may be true that there's more crime among the Romani populations (there are conflicting studies about this) majority of Romani are not thiefs or otherwise criminals, and it's important to understand that the crime is a direct result of poverty and deprivation, with it often being almost impossible for the Romani people to get jobs or higher education and being generally rejected by the society around them. The Romani themselves are frequently victims of crime, for example being extremely overrepresentated among the trafficked people.

Despite all this, the Roma people have persisted for hundreds of years and managed to retain their culture and identity. The Romani populations around the world have very diverse cultures and traditions but have many similarities too. A very high value placed on the family and deep love that the Romani people have for each other is something i think has helped them to survive. Despite all the challenges i'm optimistic about the future and i believe that the Romani will continue to survive and things will get better even though it may take time.

(Last two points- unless you're Rromani.... you're fucking stupid and your opinions based on ignorance means nothing- there's over a MILLION Rromani in the US. Also... Most of the Rromani friends I know and love are queer, trans or disabled, and poor, because… well. Yeah.)

June 29, 2020 - Jewish organizations criticized the Dutch national railway company Monday for not adequately consulting them in discussions to work out a form of recognition for Holocaust victims the company transported to camps in the Netherlands during World War II — from where they were sent to Nazi concentration camps.

The anger came after the railway company, NS, announced Friday that it would donate 5 million euros ($5.6 million) to four Dutch memorial centers as a gesture of collective recognition.

More than 100,000 Dutch Jews — 70 percent of the Jewish community — did not survive the war. Most were deported, along with Roma and Sinti, and killed in Nazi concentration camps.

Most of the Dutch victims were rounded up in cities and taken by train to camps in the Netherlands before being sent to the border and put on German trains to concentration camps.

Gideon Taylor, Chair of Operations of the World Jewish Restitution Organization, called the decision a major disappointment for Jewish groups.

"This was an opportunity to sit down with the Jewish community and survivors ... to come to terms with a history that led to the death of over 100,000 people," Taylor said in a telephone interview from New York.

...NS apologized for its role in the deportations in 2005. A year ago, the company said that an estimated 500 living survivors of the Holocaust who were transported by the company would receive 15,000 euros each. Widows and widowers of victims were eligible to receive 7,500 euros and, if they are no longer alive, the surviving children of victims were to receive 5,000 euros.

In addition, the company pledged to reach a collective form of recognition for those who were not eligible for reparations, including some 20,000 children murdered in the Holocaust, as well as forced laborers and political prisoners.

NS said Friday that it asked the memorial centers to use the donation for educating the young, with a "special focus on discrimination, including anti-Semitism."

Jewish groups, however, also wanted a donation to help "Holocaust survivors and to support the Dutch Jewish community devastated by the Holocaust," the World Jewish Restitution Organization said in a statement.

...Geert Koolen, a spokesman for NS, said in an email Monday that the company met with Jewish groups as it sought to carry out a commission's advice to make a gesture of recognition.

"In doing so we had to take in account different groups of interest and different angles of perspective — like Jewish victims who are not eligible for the individual compensation, people who fought in the resistance, forced laborers or political prisoners," he said.

Koolen added that the company regrets the anger of the Jewish groups and said that NS is "always open for the possibility of renewed contact."...

So, I usually flip through Netflix and just put on garbage TV while I’m working on shirt designs. 

I put on The Windsors, which is on Netflix, for background noise, and turned it off when within the first two minutes:

“Willy” reassures “Kate” that the family loves her even though she’s “a g*psy” after she asks

But he wishes she wouldn’t “bring home so many off-loaded white goods”

And she protests, after a shot of a busted washer and microwave that she’s brought into the palace bedroom, “there’s 12 pounds worth of good copper in there.”

So... two uses of g*psy and a whole slew of anti-Rromani racism in the first literal 2 minutes of the show. I mean, there’s casual racism and then there’s... that. It was... pretty rotten.

So, I was giving some relative strangers a ride...

... And I was listening to Balkan Romani music like I do. I swear I really like it. I’m in folk music and dance communities and grew up with the music, along with jazz and bluegrass, so I have a legitimate soft spot for goofy af Romani party music. So anyway, I was giving these folks a ride, being a stereotypical Rom. And then in casual conversation one of them calls the music “this mariachi shit”.  I was pretty taken aback. Besides that being kinda blatantly racist in multiple directions just like...  First of all, it wasn’t mariachi. Second of all, I’m giving you a ride and that’s how you talk about my music. They also complained about my car being messy, which yes, it is, I’m disabled and I can’t clean my car as well as I clean other things, my bad.  But like, who says something like that when someone is doing something for you? Like, not did something for you, but is ACTIVELY in the process of helping you out.  I was just kinda quietly like, “... It isn’t mariachi, it’s Balkan Romani music.” And another person in the car kinda backed me up and said, “Yeah... this isn’t mariachi.”  And then they said “Whatever” and dropped the conversation. Ionno, I’m trying to let it go but that really bothered me. The casual anti-romanyism is whatever, I get that a lot. But the doing it while I’m actively doing you a favor REALLY goads me.

Some Jumblr users recently caused a scare to Italian users by reblogging a post for Romani and Sinti (sp?) and basically urging them to flee the country (Italy). Something was apparently immediately struck down by the constitutional courts according to Italians on my dash so it's kind of embarrassing seeing those Jumblr users causing a panic over it. Protecting Romani and Sinti is very important but inciting mass panic isn't good?? I don't think those users apologized either/they kept going...

That’s not what happened. It wasn’t Jews inciting mass panic. It was Jewish (and Rromani users!) sharing reporting of anti Rromani racism in Italy. What should @socialistsephardi apologize for? Caring about Rromani people?

Also, I’m not super thrilled with the idea that you found fault with one Jewish person and the decided the best action for you to take would be to complain about that Jewish person to another Jewish person as if, I don’t know, you’d find a Good Jew to agree with you? A Good Jew to tell the Bad Jew to calm down? A Good Jew to report back to the Jewish Cabal about a Bad Jew who’s gone too far and upset the gentiles by making them confront their racism? What was your thought process here?
