Why Wednesday is NOT a Harry Potter rip-off
Most of the “Hot Takes” about the Netflix series Wednesday are that it’s a shameless rip-off of Harry Potter.  Why? Because there’s a boarding school and supernatural creatures?
Wednesday features Wednesday Addams going to Nevermore Academy, a school for “Outcasts.”  In the context of the show Outcast means monsters or people with super powers.  The school residents include werewolves, vampires, gorgons, and sirens as the main species based cliques. And the Principal was a shapeshifter. Other supernatural creatures in attendance include a telekinetic, an artist who has psychic visions and can temporarily bring his art to life, and a boy who can control bees.  A ghost and a Hyde monster also makes an appearance. And Wednesday, herself, is a seer.
As far back as the 1930s the Addams Family has had witches. Charles Addams, himself, said that Morticia was a witch and he was her creator.  In the 1960s Addams Family show the opening theme song has the line “So get a witch’s shawl on, a broomstick you can crawl on.  We’re gonna pay a call on... The Addams Family.”  Grandmama brewed potions in every incarnation of the family and cursed a man in the 90s Addams Family movies.  Morticia’s sister, Ophelia, had flowers growing out of her head in the 1960s show.  If you think there was nothing supernatural about The Addams Family, you clearly were not paying attention.
Tumblr media
Now, in the show Wednesday, anyone with powers or who is of another species other than human, are called Outcasts.  Everyone else is a Normie. No, this is not a rip-off of Harry Potter’s Muggles.  In role playing games I sometimes had ordinary human characters called Vanillas.  In The Dresden Files TV series they were called civilians. Fables called them Mundies, which was short for Mundanes.  In Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula books the humans are sometimes called Breathers or Mortals.  Breathers is also what the ghosts in a few young adult book series call humans.  That and “Fleshies” like in the Casper movie.  In Bewitched and Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, non-magical people were called mortals.  The vampires of Anne Rice’s novels the human characters are called mortal.
So between Civilians, Breathers, Fleshies, Mundies, Mortals, and Vanilla, the idea of the supernatural society having another name for the non-magical ordinary humans also was not invented by J. K. Rowling for Harry Potter. You would have to have had very limited experience with the horror and fantasy genres if you think Harry Potter was the first to come up with the concept of a school of the magically incline.
The Worst Witch- about a little girl in Witch School, was first published in 1974 and the first movie version was in 1986 and then it had two TV show adaptations.
Tumblr media
Even Monster High- which I, myself, have compared the school in Wednesday to- was not the first of it’s kind.
In 1988 there was an animated movie called Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School where Shaggy got a job as a Phys Ed Teacher in an “All Ghoul school” inhabited by the daughters of the classic movie monsters.  You had the daughter of Dracula, the daughter of The wolfman, the daughter of The mummy, and a daughter of a ghostly phantom.  Sound familiar?  It was Monster High before Monster High.
Tumblr media
And don't forget even the novel Dracula in 1897 mentioned Scholomance (School of Magick) a mystical school supposed to be hidden in Eastern Europe over a lake. Also unlike Harry Potter, in the world of Wednesday, much like True Blood, the general public do seem aware that werewolves, vampires, and the like exist.
Does Wednesday borrow from other Gothic Horror and teen dramas or who-done-its?  Of course.  But it’s done in its own unique way.  And it’s a spin-off of a beloved property, The Addams Family.  So just sit back and relax and enjoy it for what it is.  This is not a rip-off of Harry Potter.  It’s a hodgepodge of Gothic fantasy and it’s the first time Tim Burton has felt like ...well, himself, in over fifteen years.  Stop looking for reasons to hate it and just have fun. With Gothic horror films like The Invitation also embracing old Gothic Horror tropes, and Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman finally having its own TV show adaptation, I find it to be a breath of fresh air to see 2022 being the year that Gothic Horror has finally made a pop culture return without a cynical deconstruction by people who never appreciated the genre.  I had been hoping for this kind of entertainment for a long, long time.

I want to make this clear: When I trash the HP fandom, I am not trashing people who enjoyed the series when they were younger and grew up with it only to be disgusted later in life by JK Rowling and her antics. I know a few people who were very attached to the series and were saddened to let it go.
The people I'm trashing are the annoying fanatics, who again, act like JKR somehow changed the game in the fantasy genre when she didn't. She's not the first to write about witches and wizards. She's not the first to put witches and wizards in a school setting. She's not the first to write about dragons. Goblins. Or any other fantasy creature.
I'm talking about the people who take it as a personal attack to criticize the books or JKR herself. The ones who act like pointing out the harm she is actively committing against the trans, Jewish, and other marginalized communities are somehow "ruining their childhoods." For fuck's sake, you are not children anymore. Other fantasy media exists. READ SOMETHING ELSE!
I get that there are people who have fond memories attached to the series. And if that's you, those memories belong to you. I have fond memories of The Pirates of the Caribbean series and Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. The third movie came out right as I was graduating from high school and I saw it in theaters with a friend. This was the very last time we hung out. So, yeah, I have a sweet memory that is attached to Johnny Depp. However, I'm still not going to put one cent towards any future movies with him in them because he is trash and I don't want to support anything he's in.
It's really not that hard.

Fuck terfs, Fuck jk rowling
harry potter is shit, the story is full of racism, antisemitism and abelism, it's poorly written, and the plot is extremely contrived, not to mention unimaginably boring

I haven't purchased a HP item in close to a decade - I use the books I already had as doorstops or to prop a laptop up for meetings nowadays.
There is NO "death of the author" with JK Rowling - she controls and continues to profit from her IP, and uses that money to fund hate groups.

Okay...  more petty drama from The Sandman Facebook group.   For those who would like to know what's going on this week... J. K. Rowling has made some statements that have been seen as very hurtful by the LGBTQ+ community, mostly trans.   It is easy to believe that J. K. Rowling is probably a TERF.   I already forbid bigoted and anti-trans ideology in the group but that wasn't good enough for some people.   A person named Em Newman, for example started to demand I ban all mention of Harry Potter. Needless to say, I refused.   This is pretty much impossible since many people feel Neil Gaiman's The Books of Magic may have inspired aspects of Harry Potter, and some dialogue in the eleventh episode of Sandman (Netflix series) mention J. K. Rowling.
Also Neil Gaiman, himself, has a pretty strong anti-censorship stance and I respect his views.   I will ban hate speech but I cannot ban things like "I always wanted to attend Hogwarts."
Em Newman decided this meant that I am transphobic and they and their friends formed a new Sandman group "The Sandman without Terfs."   But that wasn't the end of it.  Em Newman started to call random members of my Sandman group names.  They called me a "Snapewife" for some reason.   (I GUESS that's someone who crushes on the Snape character from Harry Potter).   They started to post my picture on their group and elsewhere with this claim, including in the Facebook group "Poor people simping for capitalism." They even started to call one of my group moderators a "Token trans" because she's a trans woman.   This is what ultimately lead to my banning Em Newman from The Sandman group. Because Em Newman posted about me elsewhere, this lead to a surge of trolls in The Sandman group for the last day or so.  In fact, just three hours ago, if you scroll down my personal Facebook, to the Velveteen Rabbit post you'll find a comment from Em Newman with their doctored picture of my Facebook profile image, calling me a "Snapewife."   I barely know what that even means so I'm not sure why they seem to think it's such a clever insult. I'm forty-one-years-old.  I'm not that into Harry Potter.  I just refuse to forbid it's mention!  And I certainly do not condone a lot of J. K. Rowling's statements or beliefs.  I hadn't even liked her since she decided Native American Skinwalkers were just animagi under a smear campaign from Shamans with no real power.   I don't defend J. K. Rowling, I just refuse to ban the mention of Harry Potter.  That is all.
If you scroll down on this attached post from my own Facebook wall you’ll see how Em Newman has now decided to stalk me and post on my personal wall.

I cringe thinking about the about 2010s and all the generic young adult vampire romance books that flooded bookstores for years because of Twilight's influence, but at the same time, I understand why they were there. It's sad that a lot of writers were probably pressured to shit these things out in order to be able to sell books. And in the end, it did nothing for their careers. We talk a lot about fast fashion, but I think we need to talk about fast fiction. Talented writers should not have to write shitty knock-offs that are ultimately meant to carry the careers of Stephanie Meyer, J.K. Rowling, and the like.

weird little story I wanna share: if I had a nickel for not being interested in popular fantasy media in my past only to be reveal to be very controversial and bad now in days, I have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice, ya know? for context, in elementary school Harry Potter was beloved by most kids except me. I just wasn’t interested in it. Fast forward to now, JKR is a bigot and Harry Potter is not as fun to look at now. Glad I never got into it. Recently thanks to your Reblogs, Lore Olympus has been a coin earned. But 3 yrs ago I saw it and although I am a Greek mythos fan, I just wasn’t into it but for a bad reason: I didn’t like how long the dubs were on YouTube. I could not listen to 2 hours of one webtoon comics. Now I saw a video and posts on why it’s misogynistic, thanks to you (thanks for that, glad to be informed). But yeah, Glad I didn’t get into that.
tl;dr, I have interesting choice in media that it has saved me a few times.
I get that, I was never into Harry Potter either and I'm glad to know that this was the case. And yeah, the same is true for Lore Olympus. I might be into Greek Mythology but I don't really tend to read about it with the exception of Goddess Girls, as most of the other adaptations fall flat for me and are inaccurate(and don't even try to be fun about their inaccuracy) so yeah.
Here's to finding better media in 2023! Somebody tell her that it's not New Year's. Cheers! 🥂

Okay so JK Rowling has:
• Openly been transphobic as fuck
• Donated tons of money to causes which have eroded trans rights across the globe, to the point of being one the biggest forces behind the current transphobe movement
• Defended slavery in her most popular work (House elves LIKE being slaves thoooo 🙄)
• Used racist caricatures which have racist names in her most popular work (Kingsley Shacklebolt, Cho Chang, Seamus Finnigan)
• Used antisemitic caricatures in her most popular work (Goblins)
• And if you're still "well, but..."-ing the antisemitism of the Goblins, the recent game was straight-up the definition of blood libel
• Completely botched her representation of native americans because she doesnt care enough to do research
• Used the name of the man who invented conversion therapy as a pseudonym to write books
• Made a movie set in her universe where the *VILLAINS* goal is to stop the holocaust (which. WOW)
• And has now engaged in ACTUAL HOLOCAUST DENIAL
Seriously, how bad does she have to get before you all will admit to yourselves that supporting her is the same as supporting nazism??? "It was part of my childhood!" Same!!! And it sucks to admit that something you used to love is actually awful and harmful!!! But also at some point you have to just...move on!!!! "Oh I'm sure its just a mistake!" Why, because she claimed that ONE character is gay and wouldnt even let it be shown ever??? Because the main villain was slightly more cartoonishly racist than she is???? Because one of the most popular characters quit being a cartoon racist *BECAUSE HE WAS HORNY*?
Seriously. Give up Harry Potter. No grey area anymore.
Edit: forgot some shit she did, added it

Let me put it in simple explanation for all you brainless peeps out there:
Lovecraft: creator is dead and therefore makes no profit off work and is not given a platform to spread hate, okay to buy and talk about.
FNAF: creator makes profit and has funded conservative campaigns but does not use his voice to support it so its okay to pirate and talk about.
Harry Potter: creator is actively making profit off of and using the popularity to continue hate. will NOT stop spreading hate even if money is stopped through pirating, therefore not okay to buy, pirate, or talk about.
I hope this is fucking simple enough.
