Little Bird: Chapter 15 is out on AO3
and it's been for a day or so but... you know >.>
Tumblr media
The next day they left for Fort Salta. The train was scheduled so early in the morning that Annie spent the first hour of the trip dozing lightly against Armin’s shoulder, the kids’ loud voices barely reaching her. She could not fall asleep, however. Her mind went back again to the conversations of the day before. (continue)

TOP 10 favourite AA fanfics?
Hello!
Thank you for asking me too, since I saw the answers from the dear comrades in AA fandom, and I'm very touched you also asked me. Thank you!
As for TOP, it's going to be my subjective taste and, sorry, more than 10, so without further do, in no particular order:
The whole AruAni in Fort Salta, with the leading role of Village By The End of The World by @moonspirit. The true treasure for the AruAni fandom, but, in my opinion, even for the whole AoT fandom as an incredible and impressive post-canon tale.
Phenomenally written with complex, layered narration and excellent character analysis and exploration of various topics - outside and inside, past and present, and the sheer beauty of human lives with all the struggles, traumas and nightmares, tangled with the incredible moments of mundane and peaceful life. This story makes you love this life and see the beauty in the smallest of things - both the characters and the readers.
(but honestly, read all Moon's works)
Black Water and the whole collection by @distortedclouds
A very precise dive into Annie's (and Armin's) relationships through the lens of the family - Annie's father and the one Armin and Annie try to build on their own. It's a fresh and solid exploration with a fantastic character analysis without any restrictions - raw and honest, in all glory. Fantastic style, impressive depths, and a story that leaves a huge impact.
Little Bird by @aquietjune is, perhaps, one of the best Annie-centric fics ever written with a unique post-canon setting and a very sharp, in the most wonderful ways, writing style, that immediately steals you away from this world, and you're caught hostage by June's imagination and mysteries.
Legends by @mimiwrites2000 is an impressive, emotional rollercoaster of canon-divergence with heart-wrenching twists and a beautiful writing style that makes you feel longing for something that you don't even know a name. I would describe this fic as "bittersweet nostalgia".
(just like with Clouds and Moon, go and read everything, honestly)
By Each Crime and Kindness (I'm bound to you) by @aruanimess, in my opinion, is one of the best Cadets AruAni stories I've ever read - the story holds the tense melancholy of the canon with the bittersweet moments of adolescence which was forced to live and to love in their cruel world. But the world is also beautiful, and, I suppose, this is exactly what this story is about.
on the path that led me to you by @the-last-thread-of-my-sanity is another perfect example of one of the best Cadest AruAni fics, in my opinion. Very honest, and fragile, just like the first love and the first leaves in the spring, story, that, however, holds a very deep analysis of AruAni moments during their time as Cadets - and what lies beneath the surface.
The Difference Between Us by @/BreakingSanity - maybe, the most unique AruAni fic ever written. I mean, where else would you find Human!Annie and... Tiny!Annie 4 inches tall romance with unique, complex story-building and universe, plot twists and a lot, a lot of emotions? The story hooked you just from the very first chapter.
Wait By The Ocean by @/SirCookieton is absolutely stellar exploration of the grief and denial, love and hope, that is already doomed from the start, but the sheer longing, the raw emotions that etched every word through the course of the story, leave huge scars in your heart as a reminder that, sometimes, the most difficult part is accepting the inevitable.
Nothing Sweeter Than You, A Perfect Love by @dude-why-3 are my personal favourites and the stories that are very dear to my heart. This is a magical tale of star-crossed lovers in a Romanian village, set in the 1950's, and these stories are a wonderful example of how to write romance stories in general. But let me also mention Who painted the sky? - a story that granted me an experience I never had, but it's so well-written, that it feels like I experienced something like this. It feels like a memory from a summer.
A Force To Be Reckoned by @luciensdefenseattorney a solid historical AU, with mysteries, tension and great background stories! And as for the similar vibe, I would also mention The Viscount and His Silent Ballerina by @/cherriesinmoonlight
These City Lights by @annieleonhardt was one of the first AruAni fics I ever read, and it's still one of my favourites, even if it's not finished. Silent movie director Armin and silent movie actress Annie, set in the early 1920's? Yes, please.
Tater Tots & Heavy Thoughts by Anonymous is still one of the most honest, of the most delicate stories I've ever read, written with a lot of care, attention and love for the details. This story had a huge impact on me, and it still has, so if you want to dive into a fantastic character study through the perspective of some very heavy topics which are explored with a lot of care - this story is exactly for this.
Coveted by @/honeyriot is a majestically written exploration of intimacy and how two ruined souls find solace in each other embrace. 11 chapters of sensuality, honesty, bravery and vulnerability.
On freer seas by @/astralcrow is a very solid Pirate AU, with incredible and stunning world-building, great character analysis and development, and the tension that don't leave you several weeks after you finish this mind-blowing story.
And, some incredible oneshots I really liked a lot:
Tangerine Skies and Muffled Cries by @midnightraine131
A River, An Ocean by @yourmaejesty
Dawn by @/aikrm
okay by @lunamoon1233
Deep Cuts by @dude-why-3
A glimpse of us. by @/Decoii
invisible strings by @diam-etrical
If our love is tragedy why are you my remedy? by @aruxani
But let me summarize that eveyone who creates in AA fandom is incredible, and I'm forever grateful for all the content we have in fandom.
You all are wonderful and thank you a lot!

TOP 10 favourite AA fanfics? (if you have one)
Oh hello xD That's a great blog name! Does that mean more questions will follow ._.?
Anyways, my reading speed has taken a nosedive as of late; too many things have been going on and I'm trying to stick to my own writing schedule too... so my recs remain mostly the same as the previous times I've been asked. Still, here are a few of my faves:
Bury Me in the Shadows of Spring & My Yellow Light in Your Soft Whispers by @annawayne . Features some of the most compelling story-telling I've ever seen. The former is a historic AU set in the 1920s and holy shit the immersion? Anna comes armed with a deep, impressive knowledge base of history and so the fic takes you straight back in time, as if you were standing in the time period itself. BMSS is a story carrying very heavy themes, and the dive into the character's psyches is simply stellar.
As for the latter, a post-canon fic set 10 years after the Rumbling, MYLYSW is a story that takes an in-depth study into the ways that an intensely traumatic event can affect people - both the victims and of those around them. It's a wonderful telling of grief, heartache, unresolved ghosts from the past, with stunning imagery and descriptive writing. :3
Black Water & everything else in @distortedclouds 's collection. BW is, as another reader very aptly put it, the single best take I've seen on Annie's relationship with her father, and how it affects Aruani's relationship. Clouds' mastery in prose and narration is on a whole other level, and every chapter literally hurts your bones. Aside from that, all the other fics in the collection are simply wonderful reads, with everything ranging from fluff to angst to smut and everything in between! My wife is very talented you see :3 Unparalleled!
Little Bird by @aquietjune . Simply a fantastic Annie-centric post-canon story, with writing skills that simply leave you in awe. June takes a deep dive into many of Annie's issues and problems that are still left unresolved, though the world may be rid of titans. Her dedication to period-appropriate research, and the how's and why's of in-world problems make the story a truly delightful experience, and coupled with her talent of being able to tell so much in so few words, this remains one of the best post-canon fics I've ever read. Please also check out her other works, she has an uncanny ability to make you laugh until your sides hurt xD
Coveted by @honeytheriot . One of the first aruani fics I read after the S4 P3 P1 dropped in March 2023, and holy shit xD Every chapter is a smut-filled goodness and delight, and honeyriot makes it WORK with her writing!
Children of War by @/SeaTempest . Primarily a Jeanpiku fic with Aruani as a side-couple, this fic features some of the best writing I've ever seen. Smooth prose and convincing post-canon world-building, plus very good character monologues?? Hell yeah. Hasn't been updated in a while, but has plenty of content, absolutely worth a read.
Tater Tots & Heavy Thoughts by Anonymous and everything in this collection. TT&HT is a modern AU Aruani fic primarily from Armin's POV, dealing with some very dark and heavy subject matter. The writing is really good, and while I haven't caught upto later chapters, I highly recommend it. The other fics in the collection are great too :3
There are many more tbh, but my head is mushy for the moment xD However, I'll add some fics I've been following as of late!
on the path that led me to you by @the-last-thread-of-my-sanity & By Each Crime and Kindness (I'm bound to you) by @aruanimess - two Cadet Aruani fics taking place that are an absolute delight to read! Wonderful writing, wonderful characterization, lots of fluff, and the impending doom of angst~
Who painted the sky? by @dudewhy3 & Hiding in Plain Sight by @midnightraine131, two Modern AU fics that take a look into the issues Aruani deal with from their past, in a modern real-world setting. Engaging and fun, with sprinkles of heavy angst now and then.
A Force To Be Reckoned by @luciensdefenseattorney . Inspired by Bridgerton, this is a wonderfully written and highly engaging Aruani fic set in the regency era. You just want Armin and Annie to kiss and find out all about each other already.
Legends by @mimiwrites2000-fun . Canon-divergence and wonderfully written, this is an Aruani fic spanning 32 chapters and counting! Lots of emotional, heart-wrenching moments, Mimi is a writer who embraces angst with a passion and doesn't shy away from hurting you T^T

Hello I'd like to ask if there are any good annie fits out there? Anything u could recommend?
Most of the Annie-centric fics I read are also heavily Aruani, but considering you're asking me I'm sure you'll be okay with me recommending some ship fics!
I'm sure you know Little Bird by @aquietjune and my Black Water both being long-fics and Annie-centric. There's also the amazing @annawayne 's My Yellow Light in Your Soft Whispers that also focuses on Annie post-canon. It's on Hiatus but it's still worth a read!
Folk(!!!!!!) by ackermom never fails to destroy me and it offers a really good character study on Annie while being under 5k. Also Friend and Foe
There's also the Salt Water and Still Water series, with the second part focusing on Annie by @/Decoii. Modern AU but still faithful to canon characterization
Deep Cuts by @dudewhy3 for some fluffy angst
As Uncomplicated as Breathing by girlunderwater
Those are all that come to mind immediately! Anyone else feel free to share your suggestions/fics!

Fav AA fanfics?
Listen, anon, I'm pretty new to the fandom, so there are many AA fics that I've yet to read... like SO MANY. Hell, I haven't even started on some of my beloved mutuals' works yet!
I have a system, you see. This being, going through every single AruAni fic in ao3, sorted by date posted (yes, I am insane). I read every one, except for those which I find particularly intriguing. Those I put on 'Marked for Later,' because I like to save the best for last. Of course, no system is perfect and mine is no exception. I often get sidetracked by pretty summaries and alluring authors, but I try to stick to it.
A perfect example of this is @diam-etrical's A warrior in name, A traitor in game (Hunger Games AU) which I clicked on immediately and read in a single sitting, because THG was and always will be my number one obsession.
Another great example is Mihriban's Cigarette Duet (Modern AU, set in Istanbul). I read their first work and found it so compelling I went through their entire page like an absolute maniac. This last work of theirs is probably the best since their writing has matured over the years.
Yet another example (yes, this happens to me a lot shhhhhh), is Tater Tots & Heavy Thoughts by Anonymous (Modern AU). I will never stop being curious about the reason they got bullied off the fandom, because honestly their writing is so touching and considerate I cannot imagine them offending anybody at all.
So I supposed those are my favourite longfics, at least for now. As I said I still have plenty of way to go.
You can check this post for two wonderfully written one-shots. In addition to this A Fistful of Latent Images (Canon Compliant, Post Rumbling) by @aquietjune is another magnificent one-shot and all time fave.

A little flashback
The Alliance’s meeting was over. They were all excused. She could go back to her father.
But she didn’t.
Instead, she waited for the others to exit the tent, her stare fixed on Armin, and Armin looking back at her, with that gentle expression he reserved for her.
She would stare, but she was terrified, too.
She didn’t know where to start.
“Count on me,” she finally said. “I’m joining the expedition.”
Armin opened his mouth, but said nothing.
Oh, she did surprise him. No wonder, she surprised herself just as well.
He was quick, though, to find back all of his words.
“Annie, you know you don’t have to, you have the right to stay here and help your dad…”
“I know. But you need hands and I… Hitch said to me, once, that the only things of value she did as a soldier had been rescuing people from ruins and recovering corpses. I get that… this is my turn.”
She didn’t even know how she got to think of this, much less how she could say it all in one breath. What got to her?
“I see,” he said.
“I just don’t want to kill anymore,” she said.
He nodded, grave, his eyes a mirror of her pain, and said nothing.
She needed to go to sleep now. She didn’t know whether it was the night in the desert, or her exhaustion, but she felt she was about to fall to the ground. She felt she could not count on her senses anymore.
And yet she instinctively jolted and moved when Armin raised a hand right beside her left ear.
“Ah, ahem, sorry,” he said, his hand still mid-air. He looked deeply tired and yet the fresh embarrassment took over his whole face. Yes, he had wanted to touch her. Yes, he also did not mean harm.
She looked at the hand, and then she stared into his eyes. He was regretting it; he was going to desist, and apologize some more.
And she didn’t want that. She wanted… whatever he had wanted to do at first.
“Armin,” she said. She didn’t know how to continue, but it was enough to surprise him and impeded him to move. Good, what now? That was going to be a very long awkward mess, wasn’t it? Unless she could do something. Anything. Like pushing herself onto him, grabbing his shirt and drawing it to her while her face rested against his neck and shoulder, for example, in the most damning way possible. Only then she took a long breath and shivered, even as his tense chest felt so warm at the touch even through his clothes. She heard him breathing too, once, twice, and then the tension somehow loosened, and finally his hand descended to caress her head, while the other went around her, and hugged her tightly.
“Annie,” he said. Just that. She could not complain.
Tears welled up in her eyes. Was it for the tenderness of the gesture? She was not accustomed to such a thing, and she didn’t expect it would hit her somewhat more deeply than her father’s embrace in the morning.
She had counted on her father’s words, after all, for all those years: a wish fulfilled after feeding it for so long with dark, raw emotions.
Armin’s otherworldly, absurd affection instead? In their new reality, it flooded her with confusion and piercing desire, the wish she once had of being seen unable to even begin to comprehend its current scope.
She just had to surrender to it, and she did. As she lowered her arms to hug him back, she could only think: was that how big he was in reality, compared to her, then?
(She was still very small.)
The first chapter will be out soon.

Little Bird: Chapter 16, will she learn to do math, instead? (part 1), is out on AO3
Back at their lodging in Cotta, Annie was relieved to find the delivery of the chemicals she needed to develop her photographs.
“That means I’ll need to use the Lab,” she said to Connie.
But there was concern in her tone, as she already saw the other delivery awaiting her along with the chemicals: a card from Eleonora Pasquier inviting her to a social call at her house.

Little Bird: Chapter 11 is out on AO3
Note: there is a map at the end of the excerpt.
“So, when did you see the light?” she asked her father.
No, she was still on affectionate terms with him, even though the tension was already building, the doubts accumulating.
She must have asked something like, “When did you realize that you made a mistake in raising me that way?”
And then, she tried to answer herself, proposing, “When they told you I would only live up to twenty-two?”
While in Paradis, on her mission, she never let herself entertain the thought of what it would be when she returned home. She couldn’t afford the luxury of that; she couldn’t let herself daydream as if she was someone like Jean.
In the crystal, it was different.
Some days, or rather, some unaccounted amounts of time, the darkness around her was so deep, the silence so deflating, she would think of drowning if she didn’t have something to keep her anchored.
The years passed. She had a rough sense of how many, for Armin read her the newspaper often; he would even summarize some happenings, tentatively thinking that if she only became conscious then, she would feel alienated by an ongoing conversation.
Despite the darkness of the thought, or maybe exactly because of it, those were her moments of light.
So, she knew by then that she had six more years, maybe five, now, to get back home.
(continue here)
Oh, and we have a map of the general region of untrampled territory we're dealing with in the Marleyan continent, as in, the province of Cotta and surroundings provinces*. I will post it on the website as well, but for now please know that MATH DOES NOT EXIST, ok? * I should have marked the line of the end of the Rumbling, but consider Monte Forca and Fort Salta as a boundary, mh?

Little Bird: Chapter 12 is out on AO3
They knew how to move at night, and given their survey during daytime, they knew exactly where to go. The horses didn’t complain much, and it didn’t take long to reach the end of the sunflower field, at the border with the lands of the dowry.
Despite the last sliver of the moon and the stars, there was not much to be seen. The farmhouse was in the dark, and the common reed was just a mass of uneven spikes in the air.
Yet, they descended from their horses, crouched down between the sunflowers, and waited.
Considering the uneventful day, and trip, Annie should have expected it: nothing to be seen, or heard, in her dead mother’s lands.
Even the crickets’ cry was fainter there.
Connie was of a different opinion.
“Can’t you hear the dull sound in the background?”
“No,” Onyankopon said.
“Not really, no,” Armin said, pensive.
“You’re just too excited, Connie,” Annie replied.
“But I’m not! Listen…”
But she didn’t hear anything.

Little Bird: Chapter 8 is out on AO3
Aftercadet Special with Armin Arlert callbacks! Jeanpiku crumbs! Witches?? And a few answers (and more questions.)
Snippet:
When Armin collapsed in the middle of their night of work, back in the Southern Continent, months before, Annie found that she could not see properly, her marginal vision blurred as she struggled with perceiving even what was in front of her. She also couldn’t move. It was Pieck who crouched down to check on Armin’s pulse and temperature. It was Pieck who went to call Jean (and later Connie) to help them with the situation. Pieck: pragmatic, cold, almost clinical. Annie, instead, could just stare at Armin, at the papers on the floor, not really understanding, unable to speak. Cold, and nothing else.
I can’t do this, Annie thought. I will not survive.
Jean’s arrival took her out of her paralysis. Seeing and hearing him scrambling about, muttering under his breath, still trying to regain consciousness from sleep, placed her back in reality.
“Imagine being this idiot…” Jean said. “It’s okay, it happened a lot during the construction of the railway in Paradis.”
“Did he get a fever too?” Pieck asked.
“Barely.”
“So, he used shifter’s regenerations for that.”
“Heh.”
Jean lifted Armin’s unconscious body from the floor without effort and asked Annie to precede them and go open the door to the bathroom.
“Or I can wait for Connie, if—“
Pieck had already gone to wake Connie up, then.
“No, no,” Annie said. She did as she was asked, and then let Jean and Connie handle Armin, have him under a jet of cold water. She brought them towels, and his pajamas. She later helped in getting him in bed, Armin now out of the shock and in full delirium, contorting in pain.
“Don’t worry, Annie, he’ll be back plotting and planning very soon,” Connie said.
Pieck came to them with aspirin and Jean administered it to Armin.
“He cannot afford this behavior anymore,” Jean said, sitting on the bed, looking at Armin sideways. He was angered, the anger he reserved for deep worry. “Go to sleep, Connie, I’ll wake you up again when it’s your turn.”
Connie nodded and left. Annie just stood there.
“I’m staying,” she said to Jean.
“Yeah, I know.”
They organized to keep a watch over Armin for the rest of the night. They took his temperature at regular intervals and tried to keep him covered while also giving him relief with a cold cloth on his forehead. By now, Armin was mostly calm, if still unconscious.
Hopefully, it was just exhaustion, “like it happened many times before”. If it was just exhaustion, however, they’d have to keep it in check.
“He never cared about anything I said, anyway,” Jean said to Annie. “He always said ‘Yes, you’re right,’ and then continued with his ways. I hope you could at least change this.”
“Well, I’m sorry, he doesn’t listen to me about this either,” Annie said, bitter.
“I just mean you could—“
Jean stopped talking mid-sentence. He still looked slightly irritated. He shook his head.
“Whatever,” he said finally, “Look at me, spending this fine night at the sickbed of this absolute mess of a man. Ugh.”
“I never expected such a thing from you, in fact,” Annie said.

Little Bird: Chapter 5, of the space for the dead and that of the living (part 2), is out on AO3
“The Eldians can do with less space.”
Nobody wants to live near the drainage channel in the internment zone, where the air is suffused with rancid odors and the humidity eats you alive; the chemicals dumped in the river impede the growth of anything edible. That was why we live here, Annie. These sick trees are our only company while we train, the only witnesses to my child-rearing, the only lives you’re not asked to take.
We have space to live, here, like there was in my home country once; we have peace.
But look, here comes the committee for the habitability in the internment zone, they are telling us we can do with less space. We have too much. I can curl up and turn into a little cube, but what about you, my child?
Can you live on this little strip by the riverside? If we put a bed here, right at the edge of it, will you fall into the river while you sleep? Anything is better than taking something that is not yours.
If you can’t, then you’ll also be put in a suitcase and be shipped somewhere else, on an island far away…

Her first intentional rebellion was at five. At the market, she had seen a lad overturn an apple crate on the ground in front of his master, yelling he wanted a pay increase for his job, or he wouldn’t work anymore. His master was shocked, and a crowd formed around the stand. Her father led her away.
Annie did not know what pay was, at the time, but one day, feeling exhausted in the middle of a particularly difficult exercise with the rope, she did not force herself to keep going at it, as she usually did, nor she crouched on the ground saying that she couldn’t do it. Instead, she closed her wrists, dug her heels onto the ground, looked at her father, and said:
“I won’t continue until you pay me better!” […]
