idk if anyone else does this but i love this thing i do that i'm now calling "autistic food math" where i take the childhood trick of eating the vegetables first to get them out of the way to its logical extreme, wherein i calculate the exact order to eat what's on my plate in order to return maximum sensory enjoyment and minimize sensory overload
example: i ordered sushi, which is one of my favorite foods, and i love opening the container and counting up how many i have of each roll so i can make a plan for the order i'll use to alternate them, and i need to take into account what's in each roll and what it's topped with to make sure i don't have too many similar flavors next to each other, or if one is spicier than others it can't go last or the spice will linger too long and it'll hurt, and usually i'll do it in order from least favorite to most favorite (even though i love all of them or i wouldn't have ordered them lmao) so my last bite is always the best one
this power can also be used for evil when i'm in a pattern of disordered eating, but at its best it's like beta testing the meal before i actually eat it sbsjskakssk

anyway shoutout to autistics whos feelings arent taken seriously and who cant “act autistic” without worrying theyre childish and who are just blatantly infantilised by the people around them. it really is so frustrating and exhausting. always remember that when all else fails it is morally acceptable to just start biting people

no but on the other hand allistics getting mad at other autistics for finding some pride in it, and invoquing their autistic relatives whose life is so so sad and pathetic is a big no lmao.
i'm mad at allistics and the raising culture of minimizing and banalizing autism as some quirky traits everyone somehow has, NOT at other autistics coping mechanisms and/or activism.

Did I mention that a month or two ago someone on IG said I was faking being autistic? If not, yeah that happened. When I asked them why they thought that they didn't explain; just kept trying to troll me.
But the whole "ur faking" is so weird because if you're a girl or femme presenting you're "doing it for attention" and to seem "quirky/unique" but I literally have never seen that really be a thing in online spaces. Except maybe in cases where it's a person with a sizable following, which I don't have anywhere in any capacity lol.
I do remember reading a thread about SimplyKenna (now cozykitsune) because there were a lot of autistics in the thread relating their own experiences with being autistic to her getting diagnosed as autistic. Some kinda bought it, but others were arguing over whether her diagnosis was official or if she was presenting her autism in a way that felt resonant with them (with a group of ppl expressing skepticism and just plain thought she was lying).
But I think with her there was also the extra layer of misogyny with assuming that most of her audience is male and how her "simps" (some who might be autistic?) loving the fact that she was talking about being autistic because it's not a mainstream topic or whatever. So part of the assumption she was faking was to pander to that part of her demographic.
*shrug*

Also this autism acceptance and awareness month please stop using the term going Nonverbal or going nonspeaking when you are having a temporary loss of speech. Use a term like verbal shutdown or speech loss episode instead. As a Nonverbal autistic I am tired of speaking people using the term Nonverbal or nonspeaking to describe their verbal shutdowns

It’s so god damn awkward being around 2 people who appear to have a number of traits of adhd and autism because I sometimes forget that they don’t realize their autistic and they’ll say some shit like “Yeah normal ppl stopped playing this game months ago” and me, being the dumb bitch that I am, will go, “it’s because of the ‘tism lol” and they’ll get quiet because they don’t know if I’m saying it at a pejorative against autistic ppl and I’ll have to specify that I’m autistic and one of them will go “Good for you :)” in the most sincere tone imaginable and I’m over here like

today, april 11th, is the anniversary of Mel Baggs' death. Mel Baggs was one of the early founders of the neurodiversity movement and believed that no one was too disabled for human rights, something that modern nd movements fail to understand to this day. sie was so instrumental to my understanding of literally everything. sie died from medical ableism and neglect during the beginning of the pandemic. we would be nowhere fucking near where we are now without hir. i've decided to make a masterlist of some of my favorite posts of hirs, organized into different categories.
(some of these are listed in more than one category because they overlap so much)
here are some of the "essentials" (what you might have already read by hir/should read first):
hir memorial site hosted by ASAN:
In My Language
the oak manifesto
There is ableism at the heart of your oppression, no matter what your oppression might be
Getting The Truth Out (many pages, parody of bad autism awareness campaign called "getting the word out")
the meaning of self-advocacy
what makes institutions bad
aspie supremacy can kill
here are some of hir beautiful writings on perceiving/communicating with hir environment as an autistic person, and on communication in general:
up in the clouds and down in the valley: my richness and yours
distance underthought
the naked mechanisms of echolalia
empty mirrors and redwoods
the fireworks are interesting
hir tumblr tag #sensing (@withasmoothroundstone)
on personhood and who has the authority to take it away:
being an unperson
what it means to be real
empty mirrors and redwoods
on institutions and the I/DD service system:
caregiver abuse takes many forms
"i don't know that person's program"
what my home means to me
dd service system tag
god help the critic of the dawn: glamour and its fallout
what makes institutions bad
post on the JRC
outposts in our heads
on online social justice communities/their inaccessibility:
Your politics have a problem when they contradict the real-life experiences of the people they're supposed to be about.
politics, ethics and mental widgets
hir tumblr tags #outside the wall and #little packages (@withasmoothroundstone)
misc:
The Bones My Family Gave Me
Please violate only one stereotype at a time
My sort of people, just as real as theirs.
Reviving the concept of cousins
gender tag
this is hir poems and creative works:
this is hir writing on autistics.org:
may hir memory be a blessing/revolution.
