As Sirius waits for his turn, Lupin suddenly clears his throat. “Thanks,” he says, roughly. “For…” His voice trails off, but Sirius doesn’t need further clarification. His eyes drop, automatically, to Lupin’s pocket, the pouch tucked inside, the severed head of something that shouldn’t exist. “It’s fine.” His throat feels dry, raw; his voice comes out scratchy, from all the shouting. After a moment, he looks away, mumbling, “S’not as if Potter was going to make you do it, anyway.” He wasn’t volunteering to take Lupin’s place, so there’s no need for the other man to thank him. “No, but…he would’ve done it himself.” “Right,” Sirius nods. He doesn’t even have the energy to be bitter; his voice just comes out hollow. “Wouldn’t want the Chosen One getting his hands dirty.” Lupin sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. “That’s not—” But they’re interrupted by the signal—a small, floating light—and Lupin’s voice trails off as Sirius moves to climb back up the pipe. He’s too fucking tired for whatever conversation Lupin is trying to have.

I am in desperate need of some long-form, magical canon-ish marauders fic recs y’all — I can’t keep rereading atyd lmao. The issue is is there are plenty of fics like this nowadays, but they all have jegulus in them and I’m sorry but I just don’t like that ship 😭. I read ‘choices’, ‘just lovers’ and ‘only the brave’,, and as well written as they were that’s enough jegulus to last a lifetime lol. I know there’s a lot of wolfstar long form fics but idk some of them are a little bit fetish-isy (cough cough casting moonshadows) and a lot of older ones aren’t really up to my taste (e.g. the shoebox project, the lost generation). I also feel like a lot of fics don’t really delve deep into themes of queerness, disability, race, class, etc. (Which is totally fine btw!!! I just personally prefer when they do). And as much as I love jily I don’t like ships centred on them because i only like str8 couples as side pairings in my fics lol. Also for some reason everyone’s white in those long jily fics 😭

The last two long-ish fics I read that I enjoyed that basically hit all my requirements (besides atyd lol) were ‘The Hand that Feeds’ (dorlene my loves <33) and ‘As the Worm Moon Dies’ (both by Rollercoasterwords I’m actually they’re biggest fan fr). They’re so well written, explore deeper themes and flesh out characterisation,,, and ATWMD makes my world building heart so happy coz it addresses all the issues I had with the magic system and life style in the og series and takes a much more critical/interesting approach. Actually side tangent to say that everyone should read ATWMD — it’s a wolfstar au where voldy won and sirius is a death eater and remus is in an illegal werewolf-fighting ring and it’s literally SO GOOD!!

I’ve also read ‘That’s the art of getting by’ (I forgot who it was by) and I enjoyed it coz I love my magical fix it fics too. I’ve heard, ‘It never gets out’, ‘the penigwens marauders series’ and ‘the last enemy: the howling nights’ are interesting portrayals of world and characters so I’m wondering if anyone would recommend them?

Also I’m open to a fic being centred around any characters/themes as long as it has some gay stuff somewhere lol. Like an exploration of peter’s character as he slowly succumbs to ‘the dark side’? Yes please!! The Black sisters family dynamic? Yummy. lady zabini and bellatrix having lesbian murder sex as they kill their husbands? fuckk yeah. Anyways point is i just want a long form marauders fic to obsess over and would love some recs!!

just wondering how writing atwmd is going atm due to the slower updates? absolutely NO pressure whatsoever write at your own pace im just wondering since ive been hurt one too many times by abandoned fics and atwmd is honestly genuinely incredible i love it sm youre so talented, again 0 pressure literally just wondering

i updated a week ago lol what is ur frame of reference for “slower updates”…like i get that i’ve been updating more slowly than when i originally started posting the fic but ive still been posting consistently 1-2 times a month for like the past 6 months and i regularly answer questions abt the fic on this blog + talk abt my plans 4 it so i’m not really sure why you’d be worried abt it getting abandoned.

Hey, you’ve done a lot of great world building with ATWMD. I know some of it is taking from canon and expanding, but it really feels like your own original work. As someone who’s working on an original story of their own what tips do you have for world building, politics, etc to make the story feel more real? I know I’m being vague and it depends on a lot of other factors, but I hope you understand what I’m saying.

hello! a bit late getting back 2 this but gonna do my best 2 answer. first of all ty 4 the kind words etc appreciate that ur enjoying the world building <3

honestly one of my biggest pieces of advice would be 2 not spend too much time worrying abt creating something 100% "original"--as in, don't agonize over "oh i have to make something completely new that doesn't resemble any other story!!" all storytelling is derivative--even ur fave authors who publish original work are drawing inspiration from other stories, historical events, things happening in the world around them, etc. and that's a good thing! a lot of "originality" in stories is just remixing beloved tropes or character archetypes or plot beats by putting them into new contexts of combinations.

bearing that in mind i'd say what makes strong world building is embracing that quality and purposely looking to other stories or the world around u 4 inspiration. if there's an aspect of a made-up world u love in a story, think abt why u love it & how u could apply that aspect 2 ur own story, etc. pretty much every plot point i'm writing in atwmd is just me thinking of another story/trope i liked & going "hey i wanna do a spin on that" (werewolf fighting ring! heist! only one bed!). & for world-building i'd say what's helped me most specifically is honestly just like. studying history lol. my world-building is very much informed by both historical & current events & my own politics related to those things; the more you learn about the world around u, the more realistically ur able 2 create worlds in stories...like it helps 2 create fictional political institutions if you have knowledge about existing & past political institutions, etc.

genuinely thank you so much for writing thtf. it's my favourite thing to read in the whole world for so many reasons. like other than where it's obviously devastating (in SUCH a good way), idk it just makes me so happy

I think it's the first wip i followed from start to finish and I have to say that part of 2022 was not the greatest but yk, every few days there'd be a new chapter. and it was great.

I fucking love Dorcas talking about "a butterfly in the palm of your hand" it's changed the way I think so much. like you would not expect this from a fanfic lmao but it's pretty much exactly what I needed to hear at the time. living just to live, even if it's complete shit, not caring about what they're leaving behind. ch 42 (i think) where all they're doing is just washing the dishes but it's so special and they're listening to dawn storm is so important to me I love it SO much. fucking amazing.

ngl I don't really think there's anything I don't like. every character feels so right - regulus in particular sticks out to me, like there's such a good balance between him doing pretty bad things because he's not a particularly "good person" but also not being a complete dick. also I would die for marlene mckinnon and the way you write her is just so fucking good. the way she is just so alive to make up for her shorter life is so beautiful to me. I could ramble on for a very long time about everything in this fic but I dont want this to get too long lol

the music you put on the chapters is also really good like I'm pretty sure the first time I read it I didn't listen the music and then I reread it with the music and it was like a whole different experience

yeah i would've sent this earlier (like maybe a year ago) but looks like I put it off for a really long time lol

also - really love where atwmd is going rn I'm so excited for more chapters, i love Sirius Black etc etc

ahh thank u this is so sweet! i love hearing that thtf resonated w people it definitely feels like the fic kinda took on its own life & became a little philosophical journey that i was not entirely expecting lol. i think writing a story where i knew my main characters were going 2 die the whole time really made me contemplate like. ok what do i actually want 2 say abt death, and by way of that what do i wanna say abt life? bc like. as someone who doesn't believe in an afterlife i didn't wanna write a story that says "well it's ok bc they can be happy in the afterlife" <3 bc like. that does not comfort me lol. & i also didn't wanna write a story that was like "it's ok bc there's gonna be a good future 4 others after them," bc i think life means something and matters even outside of futurity. i didn't wanna play into this narrative that u have 2 Do Something 2 make ur life meaningful by making sure u have an impact on the future, etc; i wanted 2 write abt life as meaningful outside of that. & i also specifically wanted 2 write abt life as something beautiful & meaningful even with the bad stuff mixed in, and even if death is abrupt and scary and painful and unwanted. like i purposely made both their deaths pretty brutal bc i personally find the idea of a "bad death" really scary! the idea of dying before ur ready, dying scared or alone or in pain or all three, etc...and i think part of why that's so scary is bc we place this big emphasis, again, on a linear timeline of life, where death is The End, and if The End is bad, then the story's a sad one. but death is just one moment in the sum total of billions of moments throughout your life; why should that bad cancel out all the good? why should a story be sad, just because the last page of it is sad? you can open the book to any page and find happiness, and love, and warmth, etc. & that's what i'm trying 2 say w "a story is not its end."

anyway. this got much longer than expected lol i love 2 ramble abt thtf but! again ty 4 the kind words glad u enjoyed the fic glad u enjoyed the music as well!! i love the playlist 4 that fic <3

Recently read compass rose by le guin, it has been sitting on my shelf for years but i finally got the motivation to read it after r recommended a story from it to s in atwmd (beautiful beautiful story btw i still reread it from time to time). Anyways first story i read from le guin was the ones who walk away from omelas and the stories from the compass rose was also very compelling (i especially liked the eye altering and sq) and i want to read more from her work but don't know where to start since she has such a large collection. Do you have any recommendations from her?

wait that’s crazy i haven’t actually read the compass rose myself only the wife’s story!! put it in atwmd bc the publication dates worked & it had that story so cool that u owned a copy…honestly have not read le guin extensively other than some short stories (omelas, wife’s story) & a wizard of earthsea which i did like! but did not end up continuing the series bc i got distracted by other things…also started reading the left hand of darkness & got distracted w other things i do wanna return 2 that one day tho. & our minds must be linked bc i JUST started a different le guin anthology that i picked up at a used book store a few days ago!! ‘buffalo gals and other animal presences’ it has the wife’s story as well which is why i picked it up! so while i don’t have many recs i will have 2 let u know how this anthology is once i finish it…

Dorcas and sirius are so tragic it hurts, the part where they discuss having an heir and dorcas suggests taking dreamless sleep made my insides churn rly

Sirius not being able to torture bc he can't find the wall in his mind to hide and pretend he's just a knife

Also in regulus pov we saw how s became like a puppet and how life was sucked out of him when his parents obliviated him and now sirius is going through that phase even more intensely, his last two years are gone and he feels a yearning he doesn't understand, his magic is strange to him and he is in a miserable marriage he can't get out of, he suspects he betrayed voldemort but he can't even think about it in fear of voldemort seeing it, his now wife was relieved he was gone and maybe in some aspect wish he was dead bc that might actually be better than the alternative, part of him is dead already, he is so utterly alone and always under watchful eyes of his parents and voldy that he isn't even safe in his own mind.... The misery is Real

I never rly liked peter in fact he's the character i hate the most in canon because he made all the wrong choices when he had the chance to make the right ones and now to see how it parallels his role in atwmd is like a punch in the gut

And and and the part where sirius looks at the full moon and grieves made me feel like i'm having an open heart surgery with no anesthesia

dorcas & sirius reunion was such fun 2 write what if marriage was horrible & made u wanna die etc…& yeah having fun playing around w like. the idea that memory isn’t just ~in ur mind~ or whatever & thinking abt what kinds of memory might be stored elsewhere in the body & what kind of changes might stick even if u don’t consciously remember them…also glad that the feeling of like. alienation is coming thru! the mindfuck of feeling detached from ur body (& life) bc u know it’s done things & had things done 2 it but u feel as tho those things happened 2 something that was not u…& yeah the fact that he can’t even really try 2 figure out what actually happened without risking his life. fun!

i’m not a big peter fan either lol i do think he’s a fun character 2 play around w tho! like in this fic specifically joining the de is an avenue 2 certain kinds of privilege that (from his pov) he’s had 2 work really hard 2 access etc…he’s not necessarily straightforwardly evil so much as representative of a person who buys into a corrupt system & the power it promises which both sirius + regulus have also done in different ways at different points so! fun 2 think abt the parallels & divergences between the three of them…

i just meant i love your writing so much that sticking to my self-imposed rule is a struggle. and not in an “update sooner so i can read!1!1!1” way bc that would be so entitled and i’m the one who made the decision to wait.
