2. What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever watched?

Ha! Again, because I'm so good at burying trauma, I can't remember which film I found most disturbing. Happiness by Todd Solondz can hold its place for now. The tone of that movie is just the most jarring thing, particularly during the Dylan Baker sections, which, for the subject matter alone, are already disturbing. It’s the appearance of sunniness, crispy and curdled at the edges, juxtaposed with awful things.

8. Which book would you like to see adapted into a film?

Okay, while there is a film version out there of this which is terrrrrrible--I really want to see a '70s-set, super stylized version of The Westing Game actually shot on Lake Michigan, with a cast of amazing oddballs, all snowed in at a mostly-vacant coop. Taika Waititi would direct and the end results would be magical, scary, funny and a little bittersweet.

10. Who is your favorite movie director?

Man, I have so many. Michael Powell, Mary Harron, Akira Kurosawa, Jane Campion, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Maren Ade, Edgar Wright, Orson Welles, Billy Wilder, Alfonso Cuaron, Pedro Almodovar, Lynne Ramsay and on and on. I’m a sucker for a strong point of view combined with real style.

Winter: Sudden Freeze Part 1

Winter has finally come. Autumn was excited to finally brush the dust off her cosy thick pjs and wrap herself up in blankets on her queen double bed; she had the image painted vividly in her mind. She finds a smile sliding across her face and that's when she thought to herself:

"Winter never used to be this great"

It's true, winter used to be her least favourite season of the year. Why you ask? Because winter is the best season for lovers. What complements winter more than snuggling on the couch with your beloved? Feeling the warmth radiate from their skin, closing your eyes and letting all thoughts escape your mind for a moment. True bliss.

Autumn remembers all too well though, how lonely winter can be. It was only two winters ago that she was curled into a ball on her bed, crying and barely gasping a breath of air. She would always stare up at the ceiling in her room and say:

"This is what you deserve...to be unloved and abused. Let this pain go away" She desperately wanted a divine power to hear her plea for help and end the suffering...however they pleased. The cold breeze that came through her bedroom window would irritate her cracked dry lips. It also served as a reminder that there was no one there to protect her from freezing... not even that divine power (that she didnt believe in) Despite it burning her vision, she was too crippled by despair to ever close the window.

Nowhere was safe from the wrath of winter. Just outside the four walls of Autumn's bedroom was her housemate cuddled up to his girlfriend on the couch watching a rom com. You could see underneath the blankets they were holding hands, him gently stroking her hand. Like a tragic car crash, Autumn just couldn't help but stare. Her heart slowly started to freeze in winter...it was never ending torture.

"Can't believe I used to feel so low." Autumn thought to her. She almost felt like laughing because back than she was doom and gloom but nowadays...winter is almost her favourite season. You see, Autumn finally found her one and only, Nino. He filled her heart with so much love and happiness that no winter breeze could ever cripple her again.

After 7 months of dating, they had moved in together. Some would say they moved too quickly but to them it felt right. Autumn pulled her doona cover over her face, the cold wind flushing down on her face from the ceiling fan was starting to get a bit too much. She remembered how it wasnt always lollipops and rainbows when Nino moved in. They lived with what felt like a tyrant.

Shivers spiked up Autumn's spine as she remembers that feeling thinking twice, no! Three times about what you would do or say when the tyrant was lurking. Needless to say, Nino and Autumn almost threw party when he left.

Autumn would describe her life as nothing short of amazing after that. Living alone with Nino, creating a safe and free home. Decorating it however they wanted and connecting all their devices to the wifi!

"Streaming for days!" Autumn exclaimed. Nino who was laying next to her, lifted the doona up to see whether she was ok. He raised an eyebrow and tilted his head to the side slightly like dogs do when they're confused. Autumn flashed a cheesy smile and apologised for the random outburst. He gave her peck on the cheek and went back to what he was doing.

It was shortly after the tyrant left that they were looking for a new housemate. They loved living together alone but the extra help with rent and bills was always nice. Autumn knew exactly who was the right fit was! Her best friend, Princess.

Ravi is everybody's favourite and I already ship him with Liv, although I don't think we'll get that, not for a while at least. Major does get quite a bit more interesting later in the season though!

See, ‘not for a while’, that’s what I though when i mainlined VMars s1 (unspoiled), and about the halfway point i was like ‘i’m trash but i’m betting on Logan in maybe a few seasons from now, call me crazy’ AND LO, LIKE 2 EPISODES LATER. So, Rob Thomas and me don’t have what I’d call trust re: expected timelines. (Major is approximating a sexy lamp at this point, but not sexy - we’ll see)

RIGHT?! RAVI!!!!!!!!! (we are so behind so I don't know where this show is going, but I can't imagine that she'll stick with a dude whose name is literally Major Lilywhite. That name is not an accident).

THE PUN NAMES ARE THE BEST. LIV MOORE? STOOOP. (why would anyone stick with almost anyone when Ravi Chakrabarti is sashaying around in the background??)

I would see a Taika Waititi-directed Westing Game adaptation at least 3 times in theaters

FOR REAL. See I have this really stylized vision in my head--Ellen Raskin was a graphic artist, she understood a visual, so while initially I thought Wes Anderson, too often he favors whimsy and tableau over feeling and that’s where Taika bests him. Also, Taika is no slouch when it comes to the weird and wonderful. Taika Waititi it ist!

I have some casting ideas, natch. I want: 

Jared Harris as Sandy McSouthers, Ivonne Coll as Flora Baumbach, Allison Janney as Crow, Jake Johnson as Jake Wexler*, Tony Shalhoub as Otis Amber, Catherine Curtin as Sydelle Pulaski, Betty Gabriel as Judge J.J. Ford, Yang Zichan as Sun Hoo. 

My choice for Grace Wexler is my least favorite actor in the world BUT she’d be great in the part. I shan’t name her...I’ll just whisper her name in the wind.

*a little young but he would crush this part--Midwestern podiatrist/bookie? COME ON.

Winter: Sudden Freeze Part 2

Autumn and Princess were like twins. When one felt pain, the other did too. Whenever one thought about getting take out and hiring a crappy sounding rom com, the other one was there and ready. A unexplainable yet unbreakable bond. Princess knew better than anyone else what it felt like for Autumn to freeze in winter. Princess was there for the good, bad and ugly. No matter what, she would wear a smile on her face and have her arms open for a hug. Autumn felt awful for always unloading her misery onto Princess; just about all conversation between them was about her love failures and when it wasn’t in person it would be novel length text messages. Not once would Princess complain and she would often neglect her own problems. Autumn never thanked her. Move in day finally arrived and Autumn had taken the whole week off to make sure Princess eased into her new home just right. She drove a little too quickly to the airport, Nino tagging along to meet this legendary Princess character. The moment their eyes locked onto each other, they erupted into smiles and telepathic messages of “HEY! HEY! I SEE YOU! YAY!”. It was like playing a game of dodgem cars to get to a park but finally Princess was able to get into the car. From that moment on, Nino questioned why he came along for the trip as they could not stop babbling on and on. Autumn felt so privileged to have both her best friend and love of her life under the same roof. The two love birds started to realise that maybe they gave up their newly claimed space a bit too soon. It sucked that they had to give up their fridge and cardboard space to accomodate for Princess as well as not being able to use the kitchen area whenever they pleased but Autumn knew there something else going on. Once the dust settled after Princess moving in, she started to connect the dots. That’s when a slow disconnect started to happen between the two best friends.
