Can the balanced dog trainers please stop fucking talking about positive reinforcement as if those dogs are not “obedience trained”? A majority of competition obedience dogs I know were trained with R+. Letting your dog wander on the end of a line because you want to do so does not = untrained. It is simply…a choice.

I'm getting a puppy soon and I have MAD ADHD and autism, and I'm like, hey, pip has dogs and ADHD! how do i train a puppy when i can't even train myself? 😭 pls help I don't want to fuck everything up
Ooooough! I have some books I could recommend. Control Unleashed Puppy Primer by Leslie Mcdevitt is a great one. Superpup Academy on FB has some great stuff as well. I like the Cog Dog Radio podcast too I think some of those eps are about puppies (although it's usually more oriented towards dog sports content)
I have a couple other training books I like that I can rec tomorrow if you remind me!

I’m beginning to think that I live in a dollhouse of a world. I think it’s an experiment. How long until the one they created finally collapses under the failure that is supposed to be the guidance of real humans. Where is the real world? How do I get out? Are they the ones who are observing me closely? Is everyone around me just a prop for the experiment? Are they all in on it? Why post this on here? What happens if they know I’ve become aware? Will that all become a part of the experiment too? Was that the plan from the beginning? Are the people I interact with on here a part of it? Something’s just wrong and I could feel it since I woke up and days prior
Is this a glimpse into the real world? Real non involved people

personally I don't have a strong opinion on ecollar use but @ my rich client it's fucking insane to talk about introducing an ecollar to ur 4 month old parvo survivor doodle when she's just doing extremely normal puppy behaviors. what the fuck.

I know posts aren’t written with a universal audience in mind and that when people make posts like this they are probably not talking to me but
I HATE posts that are phrased to talk to everyone and say shit like “you NEED to be eating X”
shut up! you do not know a persons needs. just saw one that even went so far as to say they didn’t care if a person has a condition that makes it hard. shut up shut up! things that are healthy for most people are not necessarily good for everyone! like. my body does not tolerate cellulose. it makes me throw up. I can only tolerate vegetables in very specific circumstances, and I’m even then I will, not might, WILL, throw up part of the meal. I also receive premade meals in the mail as a disability accommodation. These meals are inevitably designed to cater to the Healthy Diet For Everyone. and as a result, I can’t eat like half of every single one because it’s steamed vegetables that will make me sick. nothing I can even do about it. it’s not possible to receive medical meals for MY medical needs. not to mention all the other stuff they send me that is prohibited for me (whole grain bread —I’m on a low fiber diet. milk —lactose intolerant. pineapple fruit/juice —allergic. tomatoes…allergic again.)
idk man it is an active problem in my life that everything presumes there is only one way to be healthy. I’m so sick of dealing with it. I DONT want to see it on tumblr too! leave nutrition advice to people’s doctors!!!

A reminder that if you see a dog trainer online who claims that “positive reinforcement failed this dog” in regards to a reactive dog and then they proceed to show you how they were able to “fix” the dog’s reactivity with aversive training that:
- you don’t know how much time and effort was put towards counter conditioning the dog with positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement counter condition to reactivity triggers takes a LONG TIME and many casual dog owners simply do not put in the work and want results ~now~.
- you don’t see the “fixed” reactive dog outside of videos in very controlled environments. The dog may still react when placed in the hands of others because the dog may be behaviorally shut down by the aversive trainer and trying to not endure any more pain then necessary. This does not “fix” reactivity. The things that trigger the dog to react still exist as a negative to trigger the dog.
- dog training is NOT a quick fix. All good dog training takes time, patience and effort. A single board and train will not fix your dog. A single class will not fix your dog. A single trainer will not fix your dog unless the work is being put in to reducing the dog’s stress and their ability to succeed EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

i just read that post about steve & the torture, and like High key think that the potential needle trauma is also v forgotten about.
and like sorry to talk about myself (Again, loool) and how i relate to steve, but when i was 10 and i was getting the tetanus shot by the school nurse, and she said "i won't poke u until u say it's okay, the okay word is 10" and then her assistant asked me my age and obviously the answer was 10, and i realized that if i answered the question the nurse would give me the shot and i wasn't ready so i didn't reply, and then the assistant said "you're 10 right?" as an answer to her own question, and then the nurse gave me the shot even though I myself hadn't actually said it was okay,, and now needles still freak me out rip, it's gotten better but i still hate it rip. idk it's like, the fact that the nurse said she'd listen to me and let me give consent, and then tried to trick me into giving it without noticing, and when that didn't work out the way she wanted, she like did it anyway/changed the conditions she set, idk i think it just made it worse, like if she had just said ill do it on 3 without telling me i could decide, i think that would've been better.
anyway my own experience with like all of that makes me think/believe that steve would likely have some sort of trauma attached to/an aversion to needles. and probably a p big distrust for medical personnel, even though it wasn't like a hospital doctor, i think it is connected enough to make him distrustful.
also now when i get poked by a needle i need to like see when it makes connection with my skin, but as soon as I've seen it and it's starting to go in i have to look away, bc like i don't want to be surprised by it, and like idk how it would be for steve, but i think he also wouldn't want to be surprised, idk how that would present itself in him though.
idk i just feel p strongly about it lol
nurses are crazyyyy i have to see like. 2 phlebotomists and a nurse every 3 months to do my hrt and it's always a different experience every single time bc half of them are CRAZY. anyway. i never actually even thought of this before to do w steve specifically i mean like you're actually so right even with that one guy being like "your friend needs a Doctor" and that the doctor was the one doing phase 2 of the torture... and then afterwards two times now we've seen him assumedly AVOID medical personnel slash hospitals/not get treated.... interesting..... i will let this marinate in my brain until i succumb to it i think. i need to fucking safe him.

On thé topic of aversives and the recent ban of e collars in the UK (there are still a few weeks left to fight it), I urge those of y’all who are anti-aversives, on the fence, and pro aversives, to watch this video.
It’s long, I get it, but put it on and listen to it in the background. You owe it to dogs to have an open mind and listen to the other side of the table. Even if it doesn’t change your mind on aversives, I guarantee it will make you think hard about them.

“ABA therapy is fundamentally ableist and harmful/abusive”
and
“ABA therapy is often the only type of ‘help’ for autistic people that insurance will approve”
and
“People who genuinely want to help autistics can be easily persuaded that ABA therapy is necessary and useful because they don’t have the right context”
and
“ABA therapy specifically touts itself as scientifically based and approved, and it can do this because there are actual scientific journals saying this”
and
“Those scientific journals are written by neurotypical people who are investigating reduction of visual symptoms instead of reduction in stress”
and
“ABA has some aspects that are generally considered good, such as helping kids communicate, and this helps it mask the screwed-up and abusive sides of the therapy”
and
“Some institutions will say they offer ABA therapy and then actually offer a completely different type of treatment”
and
“The ABA therapy offered in schools is usually even crappier than average because it’s focused on making kids quiet, not healthy”
and gosh I’m so fricking tired

and in our personal life we've been working on some different tricks and trying to get a start on rear end awareness!
we have been doing a lot of focus on paws up and also going around a little cone. i want to get her a target mat (and i ordered something that i think will do the job.
also is 2 on/2 off the best starting point for rear end awareness? maybe we need to do some solid work on it or experiment with different surfaces but i cant tell that erie is realising what is happening 😅

I would be a lot more inclined to do yoga if it was marketed as stretching or fitness exercises, instead of every ad for yoga being about ~toning your body~ and ~making you ass look better~ or some shit.
