As a frequent "ugh, fanon," person it's not that I don't like non-canonical character designs or interpretations as a concept. I love unique and creative ideas about fictional characters that are informed by canon but diverge from it in interesting ways that build upon the original vision! I almost never see this in fanon.

#this is about a bunch of things but rn i'm thinking about halfling tails...uninteresting repetitive pointless and in conflict with canon #more generally i get that fanworks are derivative by nature and that's the point but there's similar and there's The Same. #like. my beef with fanon is not ultimately one of HOW DARE YOU DEVIATE FROM THE HOLY WRIT #it's that it's often dull and poorly executed by people who are gathering around a single kind of stupid headcanon #there are many great individual headcanons out there but they almost never make it to fanon status #bc fanon is not a garden of many new interesting ideas. it's a single dirty pink flamingo haphazardly stabbed into the lawn. #99% of the time canon was better bc it wasn't passed through a committee that stripped it of anything interesting and made it reproducible #anyway follow for more musing on how i believe that while capitalism has DEFINITELY made art worse social media also has #most of my favorite creators end up being the ones who are either very offline or at least have very hard boundaries #and most of my favorite fan creators are involved in fandom but are also fanon (derogatory) people

I also loved the seven husbands of evelyn hugo #I've read two (2)!! different boy band secret relationship books. so. #my favorite part is always the fake social media I'm filled with glee imagining the in universe rpf fandom losing their mind #there's nothing a bitch loves more than a fake twitter thread or tumblr post #I do this even with works that don't focus on the celebrity aspect like I read aftg and technically they're well known college athletes #so even though the hypothetical in universe sports fandom isn't a huge part of it I'm still reading it like I KNOW TWITTER IS ON FIRE RN!!!

i remember knowing everyone was on tumblr in highschool/middle school, but there was an unspoken rule never to mention it (maybe due to it not functioning like social media but rather a secret journal that was a bit embarrassing and cringy). flash forward to undergrad when my roommates partner casually mentions being on tumblr and everyone in the room gets pulled into a conversation about what they used it for, what groups they were a part of, embarrassing things they posted etc etc. i was floored. i just assumed that everyone operated under old-school internet rules of anonymity and agreed never to talk about it in real life. it felt almost obscene to hear someone mention it aloud and unprompted

#it also got me thinking do people view this site as a journal/forum or as social media? #bc i exclusively see it as the former #and that it functions best as a way to filter genuine interests and real perspective #which are my two favorite things about the site #my least favorite is the fucking monopoly ads #makes me wanna kill myself with a gun

My least favorite thing recently is when I watch a really cool female led movie that has a lot to say so I search it up to find like minded individuals and all I find is lana del ray coquette female manipulator bullshit and no one willing to interact with the text in any sort of interesting way

We've gone from not seeing female characters as people in a weird sexualization love interest way to not seeing female characters as people in a "aesthetic" way like why can't I watch a woman movie and talk about it like men talk about male movies

people need to stop trying to use musicians' friends/significant others/etc to try and get in with the band, even if its for potential work purposes. if you want to be a photographer or an interviewer or a make up artist or literally whatever, go through their official channels to do so or reach out to them via social media. their friends, significant others, etc are not ur key to getting in with them, it's a huge breach of boundaries
