Cake prt. 3 (Trevante Rhodes x Reader)

A/N: Whats up! Back with another weekly update!! Sorry I know I was supposed to post this yesterday but I really had to edit so it’s a day late. If you haven’t read Part 1 or 2 please catch up on the entire Dadvante! Series via my Masterlist

Disclaimer: Yeah I actually don’t know anything about Trevante Rhodes, his mother, or if he even has siblings. This is all fictionalized and no actual research about this man or his family was done prior to writing this.

“You two spoil him.”

“Okay.”

“It’s too much responsibility for him.”

“He’s a good kid.”

“Yes, he is a good kid but this is too much.”

“Not too much for us. Financially it wouldn’t put us in a bad place so why would we ever limit our kid?”

“To keep him safe! What if he got in a car reck!?”

“He could get in one of those in the car with me. Or Tre. At least this way he’ll have his independence.”

“What if-

“Look, mom, I didn’t call to talk about his gift, I came to tell you that his birthday dinner is going to be this Tuesday and we’ve already picked a restaurant and a time.” You had been on the phone with your mother for only 10 minutes and she had already gotten on your nerves to no end.

“Oh you booked a restaurant? He’s having a party?” She asked.

“No it’s just a family dinner plus his girlfriend and that way he can have all the fun he wants with his friends when the weekend hits.” You said waving to your husband who just entered the house.

“Okay okay, me and your father will be there.” She said and you sighed in relief. Why did everything have to be pulling teeth with her?

“Thanks mom, Love you.”

“Love you too, bye.” You hung up and rubbed your eyes. Well at least that was over.

“They set for Tuesday?” Tre said coming out of the kitchen chomping on celery.

“Yeah, your folks?” You said getting up and wrapping your arms around his neck to hang on him.

“Yep, called them yesterday.”

“Great,” you said closing your eyes.

“You think we’re doing too much getting him a car?” You mumbled into his chest.

“Baby, we got him the safest car out there. And it’s electric so we’re saving the environment too. A lot of planning went into it, dont over think it right before the finish line.” He laughed and you immediately felt your mind go at ease. He always knew how to calm you down when you felt yourself getting worked up.

“Do 16 year old boys even like to drive Hydroelectric cars?’” you asked, cocking your head back to look at your man.

“It’s a brand new model fresh off the lot, he better love to drive it,” Tre chuckled. You leaned up to kiss him but could only reach his colorbone due to your height. He lifted you up, allowing you full access to his lips and neck. Right as you began gnawing at his jugular, the two of you paused at the sound of a growl coming from below. You both looked down to see Malik’s pit bull, Cujo, growling on the floor, warning Tre to put you down. He obliged and you bent over to gather the midsized pooch in your arms. He seemed to purr the second you picked him up and held him in your arms, his tail flailing back and forth with joy.

“Can’t believe he likes you best after you were the one against getting him.” Tre scoffed.

“He can recognize the leader of the pack, can’t he? Yes he can,” you cooed, cuddling the dog like a newborn baby even though Cujo was way past his puppy days.

Tuesday was here and you were exhausted. You’d been hearing it about one thing or another by your mother and Tre’s Mother since you got here. Tre’s little brother kept flirting with the waitress’ and you were about to kick him out. Malik and his girlfriend seemed to be enjoying themselves, feeding each other off their plates while the while Malik’s other friends teased them. Meanwhile your combined families seemed to find one thing or another to fuss about all throughout the evening.

“I’m just saying I don’t entirely agree with allowing him to go off so far for school. I know college is still two years away but he’s an only child.” Mama Leigh, Tre’s mother, said.

“He’ll be fine. We sent this one off the second she got that acceptance letter and she turned out just fine.” Your daddy said gesturing to you.

“Well not every case is the same, besides she-“

“Time for cake!” You said ending the conversation. The last thing you wanted was your parents and Tre’s getting into it. It seemed there was only one thing they could ever agree on and it was that they wanted more grand babies. You were not about to have that discussion again and was ready to just get the night over with. Plus, the sooner you served the cake meant the sooner you could get to presents.

One Birthday song, followed of course by the infamous Stevie Wonder version, later and it was finally time for gifts. You let Malik’s girlfriend give him her gift first, followed by Jaime, Tre’s mother, you and Tre’s more mundane gifts (sneakers, video games, etc.) when finally the only thing left was the grand finale.

“Alright is that everyone? Great! So Malik, me and your father have been doing a lot of thinking an-“

“Wait where is Dad? And Grandpa?” Malik asked and the room went silent. You knew where Tre was: pulling the car around and slapping the biggest bow on the hood imaginable, per your request of course.

“He’ll be back in a minute. As I was saying, we-“

“Um, Y/N-“ Tre said rushing back inside.

“One second-“

“This really can’t wait, we have a problem.”

“With the, um, thing?” You said trying to be discreet. You did have the entire room’s eyes on you.

“Um, yeah, you might wanna step outside real quick.” You could tell by the look on Tre’s face it was something bad. Real bad.

“Why don’t we all step outside!” Your mother said cheerfully.

“NO!” You and Tre said in unison.

“Watch your tone, you two. We’re going outside, that’s final. Come, Malik,” she said rising from her seat. Malik hopped up excitedly, the rest of the party getting up as well following him.

“Who’s in charge here?” You asked exasperated. You rushed out with your husband and your jaw immediately dropped to the floor.

Parked right next to you and Trevante’s gift to Malik was a brand new cherry red Dodge Charger complete with a fresh set of rims and neon lights illuminating the underside of the vehicle and the interior.

“What the-“

“Happy Birthday Malik!” Your parents chimed in unison tossing him the keys. Malik was having an absolute fit of excitement bouncing up and down while hugging his grandparents. He then ran over and hopped in the car, immediately revving the engine.

“B-But But we-“ you were in a complete state of shock as Trevante rubbed your lower back, trying to calm you down.

“I know, baby” Tre grumbled, kissing the said of your forehead.

“They stole our thunder,” you whined.

“Yep,”

“I didn’t even get to say my speech,” you said in a watery voice, the tears beginning to well in your eyes.

“Hey hey hey, it’s still the little man’s birthday, no tears where he can see em. You wanna go inside?” Tre asked cupping your face.

“No, no. I’ll be okay.” You composed yourself, while Tre rubbed your arms, effectively calming you down but you couldn’t deny you were hurt. Your mother knew you were getting him a car and she’d turned around and done this anyway. It was probably why she’d been so adamant about talking you out of it in the first place.

“Aye what’s this other car here with the bow?” One of Malik friends asked.

“Ughhh....?” Malik looked over to where you and Tre were standing.

“Suprise....” you said dully.

“It’s for me?” He asked, confused.

“Yeah, we see we weren’t the only ones with this gift idea,” Tre chuckled, tossing him the keys.

“Damn, Lik, yo folks got you two whips?! And both them bitches brand new? Oh y’all got MONEY money!” One of his friends exclaimed, clamping him on the shoulder.

“Forreal,” Diane smirked.

“I don’t know what to say....” Malik said looking at the keys.

“You don’t have to say anything, go take it for a spin,” Trevante winked and you elbowed his side.

“He doesn’t have his license yet,”

“He can go get it tomorrow, c’mon baby let him have some fun,” Tre smiled showing you all them pretty ass teeth and you knew you couldn’t say no.

Later on that night at home, you and Trevante were sipping wine in the kitchen while Malik was putting away the rest of his gifts that could actually fit inside the house. Tre was seated across from you, giving you a foot massage that was out of this world while you downed your second glass that night.

“You really think he enjoyed today?” You asked for what had to be the third time since the dinner party ended.

“Lil man had a blast. You saw him earlier, he couldn’t stop smiling the whole rest of the night,” Tre was right, of course, but you always needed the extra reassurance.

“I’m gonna kill my mother next time I see her,” you said mundanely. Just because you were happy your son enjoyed his birthday did not mean she was off the hook.

“Y/N...”

“Okay okay I’ll settle for never talking her again,” you took another swig of wine.

“Mom... Dad...,” Malik came down the stairs and entered the kitchen. You could tell by his pajamas and sleepy expression he was ready for bed. He was even wearing his new Yeezy’s Trevante had just gifted him, having already vowed earlier he was never gonna take them off.

“Lik Lik...” you reached for your son and he came and sat in your lap like when he was a little kid, only this time he was much heavier. Your feet were still sprawled across Trevante’s thighs so they were really the ones supporting this whole arrangement. He was strong enough to take it though. Hell he was strong enough to pick you, Malik and Cujo up if he wanted to.

“I came down to tell you guys thank you for the car, and my birthday in general,” he yawned, wrapping his arms around your shoulders. Sometimes you didn’t know who was the bigger baby, him or Cujo.

“Your welcome. After all you only turn 16 once.” You smiled. “But you know you’re not keeping both those cars right?”

“Grandpa said legally you couldn’t make me choose,” Malik said, already half asleep.

“Whose the lawyer, me or Grandpa? Plus legally speaking, until your license is acquired and you’re insured, you’d be driving any vehicle unlawfully.” Your words fell on deaf ears as Malik was already fast asleep.

“Seems like just yesterday we were bringing him home from the hospital,” Trevante said, looking at the two of you with nostalgia in his eyes.

“He’s growing like a weed,” you smiled and ruffled his hair. “A weed that’s getting pretty heavy, can you take him? And please remove those ridiculous shoes when you put him down.”

Trevante chuckled as he took his sleeping son from you and began carrying him to his room before stopping and turning at the base of the stairs.

“Aye, meet me in bed in five minutes.”

“What for?” You asked, stretching.

“You been working hard coordinating all this, thought I might show a little gratitude. Love on my baby,” he winked, heading back upstairs.

You had to pick your jaw up off the floor for the second time tonight. You poured yourself another glass of wine, knowing it was about to go straight to your nether regions which were already buzzing with excitement. You knew it was about to be a long night, because when Trevante was feeling a special type of grateful, he could eat it for hours. You found yourself humming as you strolled up the stair grinning ear from ear.

The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from April 1st, 2020 to April 7th, 2020. The chat focused on the following question:

How do you feel about creators spoiling their own stories, and how does it effect how you read the comic?

As someone who's both reader & a creator, it can be really hard to restrain giving spoilers. But it could also be that they are excited to make this story and they wanna 'get to the spoilers' really soon. But if you are such creator, an idea is to find friends whom you can trust, don't mind giving critique/give spoilers to. As a reader it can be slight disappointment to learn about spoilers in a comic you were invested in and still reading. At this point, I might think, I'm going to get out of the conversation on the spoilers and wait until more content is made(edited)

Being someone who was raised by a parent who wanted me to spoiler movies for them if I saw it first, I don't care about stories being spoiled for me. Experiencing the scene is usually very different than being told what it is, also once I get to that spoiled scene I've already forgotten about it thanks to my Quality short-term memory. Honestly, I would totally go all out spoiling my own comic, but I know most people hate that stuff so I don't out of respect. There have been a few times when I've talked about spoilery stuff not really knowing if it would be considered a spoiler, or because I'm talking about something else that is related and I have to spoil a bit for the topic.

Personally it depends on how plot heavy the spoiler is. If it's something like what food/clothing/interests the characters have, I don't mind so much. But if it's something like who is going to die, who falls in love with who....I think the experience would be slightly more diminished.

Like @Joichi [Hybrid Dolls] said, I usually share the spoilers only with close friends, particularly those who know how to give their input. It's important to get feedback, but choosing who you tell is very important.

I’m very protective of story details. I don’t want people to know any of what’s going to happen in my story. I like having secrets

I don’t really mind hearing spoilers myself much of the time because I mostly enjoy stories by looking at all the events in the story together. If I know all the events sooner that often lets me enjoy it sooner

I usually don't care that much about spoilers, unless it's about character death or something. Usually, I try to avoid them like the plague, just in case, but I don't really care that much.(edited)

Personally, on other people's comics, I usually only refer to what's in the comic proper. Not too fond of having to read supplemental material, like creator QA's.

I know they can be nice for some readers, but I genuinely don't like it when the knowledge established in a QA or so is assumed to be known in the comic proper without ever being mentioned there.

I'm having difficulty articulating my reasons, but for me, the creator spoiling things is different from a reader spoiling the same things. And reader-supplied spoilers can also be VERY different based on context and tone. I hate it when people spoil things for others out of malice (like when people were buying ad spaces, just after that one Harry Potter book came out, to broadcast [THIS IMPORTANT CHARACTER] DIES!!!!), even if I don't care about the work being spoiled.

Going back to creator-supplied spoilers........ it's something I can't relate to, as a creator myself? (Sharing spoilers in private is one thing, but if they're posting it in public...) This is going to sound negative and I apologize in advance. When I see a creator laying out the big spoilers in public, it makes me worry that maybe they prefer to talk instead of actually making the comic -- that maybe they won't make it to the ending. I'm happy to be proven wrong, of course. And there is no shame in dropping a comic before you get to the end (I've done that myself!). But yeah, public spoilers is one of those things that makes me worry.(edited)

when it comes to reading spoilers, Ive never really minded. Granted, I'd rather have spoilers more towards "what to expect" because I otherwise will get a lot of anxiety. A bit of the way in, I want to know if something is going to be worth my time to get invested into, or if I should ignore the stress and just be along for the ride. Being told things like "this is a tragedy and you shouldnt expect to have a happy ending" and "everything will work out in the end" really calms me down when I'm reading. Getting small spoilers about character things, inconsequential plot stuff, etc. don't really bother me at all, but yeah I'm with keiiii where if someone is sharing the ending of their story halfway through I worry theyre not interested in actually working to get there.

I'll personally share in small private settings whatever people want to know, but I refuse to in a public setting share what I'd consider to be a big spoiler. I'll share small character things or vague plans and some worldbuilding stuff, but I don't see those as spoilers really.

Ooh me too. I drop some future story features in my About page - very broadly. But it's more of a pitch than an outright spoiler. It requires some vagueness to be effective.

@Deo101 [Millennium] Setting expectations correctly is very different from spoilers, I think, and more in direction of "what genre does that story fall under". Like a romance means happy (for now) ending for the main couple - even if you might end up disagreeing if an ending is happy.

It ain't a spoiler that a space opera has some kind of space travel, that kind of thing.

For me spoilers tend to cover plot specifics, not genre and general tone. That's setting expectations.

I agree that a lot of times what creators share is basically bonus plot info, or extra details, or even warnings. I actually haven't really ever gotten a major spoiler from a creator.

Yeah I do want to remind again here this should be about experiences as a reader, not as a creator. And I know there can be a bit of bleed over, but there's a point where the focus changes too much.

I think this depends on who it's being spoiled to. If creators want to spoil their stories to close personal friends in private convos, I think that's A-okay. Even as a writer I do that, because it's good to have people to bounce ideas off of. And I think for more creators it's the same. Also, sometimes you just want to have a fun chat to de-stress and it's easier with people who you can tell all your secrets too. If it's being spoiled to people who asked for spoilers, that's also another matter where I think it's mostly fine. In fact, depending on what's spoiled, it can really help drive engagement. For example, if a comic is "spoiling" lore that has a significant bearing on the plot without revealing the exact how of it all. However, then we come to the matter of major public spoilers, which there are tons and tons of creators who do this. On the one hand, that's the creator's right to do so, so a part of me feels like embracing the can't be helped mindset. But, if I'm being brutally honest, as a reader 90% of the time it just kills all engagement with the story for me. I mean, what's the point of reading the story if I can just find out everything in a fraction of the time? Plus, for me personally, I enjoy theorizing and trying to guess events, mysteries, etc. And if I'm being told the answers, that basically ruins like 80% of how I engage with content. I'm also confident I'm not the only reader who feels this way, so personally speaking I don't think it's a wise decision no matter how juicy or agonizing it is to hold in the spoiler.

For me, spoilers don't mean much. I'm still going to read the comic regardless. Now I spoiling something is funnier, because it takes me forever to get to the section which I spoiled, so something I spoiled would take a year to get to, and then everyone forgot the spoiler anyways. XD

I have already spoiled endings to my friends about one of my comic projects, and three months in they are already like "I forgot about that." So maybe it's just my readers haha.

@keii’ii (Heart of Keol) About the talking vs. finishing the comic thing. If I decided to spoil it would be because I was impatient to discuss. Like, right now I have the worst itch just to talk about the climax and ending to discuss all the little details, what I could do better next time, if I should put trigger warnings on specific chapters, and/or how my readers feel. Would it keep me from making it to the end? Nah, executing and seeing the results are not the same as describing them. The emotions a reader has can change vastly when they experience an event vs. read a description, it's not as fulfilling... or as painful. At least that is my perspective, neither I nor my readers would get the full experience from me describing a major event/ending. I don't know how it would be for other creators though. Lol

Great discussions here! If I’m the reader, I’d prefer not to be spoiled and enjoy the story as is. It helps me as both a consumer and a creator to see how the plot twists are planted and revealed. As a beta reader, though, I would need to know the story to give suggestions on how to execute said spoilers but this is more of a creator-to-creator basis. I totally get the itch to share and I think having betareaders/comic confidantes are great for satisfying that need while getting constructive ways to evaluate them.

Agreed. I think having at least one person within your reader circle who is privy to deeper details can be very helpful, both for editing and for motivation Especially if there are story details that won't be shared for years. It's a good way to prevent 'leakage'

I need to get myself a confidant, not only would it help the itch but talking about it would probably help me better fill in the small details. There was a rl friend I had who got too busy and lost interested, and someone online who I talked to about smaller stuff, but I don't like bothering people. Especially since my comic is sooo... my comic. Lmao!

Gosh, I would be the perfect person for someone to confide in about their comic, I would totally forget about the spoilers after waking up the next day.

Tbh I don't mind if a story is spoiled to me. I'm the type of person who is like "okay so that's how it ends? How does it get there?" and I would be more upset if the creator spills those important parts that reach the end result. Though, when explaining my comic plots and details to my irl friends and beta readers, it's more of a planning session than things said in stone. Basically if it's something that I've not written down and could be a spoiler, yet I talk about it and those spoiler squeals aren't in the final scripts though. If it's an important detail and is a spoiler, I will withhold that information till the time comes.

I don't know what I'd think because I've never seen a webcomic I liked share spoilers before. I get the feeling that a "serious" writer would keep their twists private because they know they can show their plot better than they can tell it, if that makes sense. Even Sfeer Theory, a comic I really like that iirc did much of its brainstorming online, shut down their old worldbuilding posts once they got their actual comic started.

Personally, I'm not hugely opposed to spoilers, though it depends on the context. A lot of new webcomics when they're just started out will often only be able to market themselves with illustrations of scenes or dynamics that haven't quite happened yet, just by virtue of being so early on, and that's fine-- though increasingly less necessary the more Comic is released. The only kind of spoiler I might be actively mad about is if a comic whose appeal hingest largely on a central mystery or suspense spoiled The Answer, but I feel like most of the writers creating stories like that are conscious of this and keep that sort of thing under lock. There's also a big reason why I personally try not to share spoilers (and why I try not to put much stock by any spoilers I see posted by other webcomic creators, in case their process is like mine)-- which is that, basically anything that is more than a month ahead of the pages I've already drawn, is very likely to change substantially. I rewrite future plot points all the dang time. So if I shared something as a 'spoiler', there's only a 50/50 chance of that plot point actually coming to pass (unless it's one of the 4/5 big central plot linchpins); any readers waiting for it may come away disappointed, lol.

Def agree with Vare on this one. However, sometimes when a writer tells details to the point of no surprise in the comic whatsoever, that usually breaks immersion and interest for me. I've had a couple stories stagnate from having their plots revealed by the writer, and when the story hinges on that being a selling point, it tends to be very dissapointing to have done. Unless the story is character driven/ has characters charming enough to capture readers, i would def avoid spoiling the main plot points of the story if they can

I feel like anything in act 1 is technically not a spoiler since in books, the blurb encompasses act 1 even the beginning of act 2.

It's hard to say how I'd feel because I don't really see writers post, like "X dies in the end" or whatever. Like it's not that common an occurrence, at least for comics I follow. What is common in my experience is creators posting ship art for characters that haven't shown up yet (thus spoiling that these are characters who will show up at some point, and at least have some interaction with each other). And with regards to that... I dunno. Like, my mentality as a reader/watcher of things is that a character doesn't "exist" until I see them in the story. Like, if I see a character in an anime OP, I'll be like "oh that character looks cool, I can't wait until I meet them". That is, I don't consider myself as having "met" them yet - I need the story as context. (for the record, that's true for me as a creator too - i know plenty of creators figure out their OCs' personality & backstory first before figuring out what sort of story they work in, and that's valid, but I can't imagine working like that) So anyway, to me creators posting OC art before they appear in the story is less "oh, i've been spoiled on what these OCs will do" and more "oh, i can't wait to read the story that these characters are involved in"

MESSAGE SEEN SUNDAY 11:00PM

God, I'm exhausted. I guess that's what I get for going to sleep at fricking 1:00 AM and waking up at 4:30. I didn't even want to wake up, I was dreading senior year. I hate school. I hate everything but hey, only 10 months left... I honestly don't want to put effort in, but I always felt the urge to look decent. Maybe I'll wake up and be a sexy beast one day and suddenly boys will be like hot damn, and i'll just get a boyfriend like poof.

Hah, sike. A bitch thought.

I went to my closet, and pulled out what I had planned for today, Blue mom jeans, a black cropped sweatshirt, and my combat boots. As I put on my clothes I remembered Changbin. At least he doesn't know what I look like...

My makeup was simple, my eyebrows, some mascara, a few dabs of deep pink lipstick, and highlighter. For breakfast I had my usual sunny side up egg on toast, and then I headed out. When I got to school it was already busy. Everyone was standing with their big groups of friends and I shook my head.

How are they so happy.

Yeah, maybe I was just being petty because I lowkey wished I had friends but I also just hate myself so...

The first half of the day dragged on.. It felt hours. When it was finally lunch I immediately went upstairs with my food and sat at my usual table in the cafeteria. The room started filling up and the table beside mine that usually stayed empty, stayed empty for the next few minutes. I sat there, reading my book and snacking on peppers. Suddenly the room went silent and a group of four guys walked in. I could tell everyone was eyeing their clothes, the Off-white, Vétement, Gucci, and they screamed rich.

Great, more spoiled kids in this school.

But then I realized, oh my god, one of them must be Changbin. Of course he's a spoiled asshole! I shook my head slightly, and the sounds of the cafeteria slowly picked up again. The boys continued walking though, and I tried to focus on my book. When I noticed they were heading to the empty table next to mine, I didn't even look up. I just prayed they weren't going to sit there.

All of a sudden a deep voice made me jump,

"Hi, sorry, didn't mean to scare you. I'm Changbin, that's Hyunjin, Jisung, and Chan."

My heart stopped, lord, these are beautiful people.

"Hi, nice to meet you." I said softly, and turned back to my book.

Sorry Changbin, I'm not looking for friends. I'm sure everybody in this school would love to be your pal. As I was turning, I caught the eye of one of the guys, he had beautiful lips, and he smiled softly.

Well shit.

Finally the day ended and I went home exhausted. Almost as soon as I flopped onto my bed for a nap, I got a message.

The next day I had art first block and graphic arts second block, my two favorite classes! I walked into art. I didn't mind the people in art, mostly because everyone kind of just... minds their own business. I walked over to my corner I sat in last year and waited for people to show up. I waited and suddenly the boy who I thought had pretty lips walked in to the class. I expected him to go sit with the kids who have expensive clothes but to my surprise and maybe even dismay, he walked over and sat beside me.

"Hi, I'm Hyunjin!"

Why does my heart feel like this,

"I'm Alice..."

"How ar-"

The boy, Hyunjin, suddenly noticed I wasn't up to chatting and awkwardly grinned, silencing himself. The class went by surprisingly fast, usually the first few days are always boring.

When the bell rang I gathered my supplies and headed out the door... A hand on my shoulder caused me to flinch.

"S-sorry! I was just wondering what class you have now." Hyunjin yelped, letting go of me. I shook my head, ignoring him, and continued walking. I half expected him to stop following me but he ended up going with me all the way to graphic arts.

"Wow, what a coincidence." He chuckled, entering the class with me.

You have to be kidding me.

He didn't talk to me for the rest of class and I was low key thankful. Finally when it was lunch I escaped him and went up to my table, I was half hoping the four boys wouldn't come today. But as per usual, I was wrong and they entered. I looked up against my better judgement, and saw how good Changbin looked. I was captivated, though the sudden speaking of my name caused me to snap out of it. Hyunjin was at the table next to mine and he was sitting in the chair closest to mind, staring at me.

"Hey Alice, can we sit with you?"

5 Lessons to Learn from My First Online Dating Encounter

If you just want the bottom line about the online dating lessons, go to the end of the post. But this online dating story is worth the read.

Email and text excerpts that follow are authentic actual conversations (including misspellings) saved on my computer and cell phone.

The Last Love of Mark Rossi!

Less than 24 hours after I had put my profile on the online dating website, Match.com, I was pleasantly surprised to get a message from Mark Rossi -- age 62 (five years younger than me -- could I handle being a cougar?). Mark's profile showed him to be Italian/American, a widower, a successful international businessman and very good-looking!

"This looks really promising," I thought. He asked to exchange personal email addresses and send additional photos of each other. The match was off to an exciting start. I chalked up the poor grammar to his foreign native language.

Here are a couple of excerpts from Mark Rossi

"My old friend and pastor would tell me, if you aren't ready to feel or look stupid, then don't fall in love ,lol but sincerely that is the bitter truth. When i lost my wife , he told me that the fact that something good ends doesn't mean something better cant start. Can you prove that right? I have come to realize that let a man is reduced to nothing except he has a woman to call my companion.

I don't need a super model, I rather need a very good friend, a good woman with a good heart, someone who knows when i am tensed just by looking into my eyes. The whole world may be mad at me, but if you are smiling at me, i would care less. Can't wait to read from you again dear.I wish you have a wonderful evening ahead.Till I read from you again soon, sending you morning hugs."

It all sounded great. But...

But I was asking him specific questions like how it was that he was located out of Bedford, Kentucky? And if Italian was his first language? The name of his business? But he never really answered those questions.

After a week or so the first shoe drops!

"I have been so busy today because something came up and i have to travel tonight to Dubai for a week, i was contacted by the customs there to come over to sign some confirmation papers because some security protocol was breached by the shipper during the shipment of my cars and some incomplete paperwork from Germany. The cars are 16 in total, a total of 4 - 20ft container consisting of 4 cars in each.

The plan was to ship down to Dubai, talk to a dealership and move them for sale. We can always communicate everyday through emails and phone until i get back home, I promise to keep in touch and seeing you would be top priority on my return.

This could be the beginning of forever and i would put my mind to it and i want you to also. please have a good evening, i would talk to you soon , please leave me your phone number.

Sending you hugs. Mark.."

So, what was so bothersome about this?

The delay did not bother me at all because I wasn't so sure I was ready to meet him anyway. What bothered me is that there was no traceof an Italian accent in his voice during our phone conversation -- despite the fact that he was supposedly raised in Italy until the age of 12.

I asked him again why he was based out of Kentucky, but I was not satisfied with the answer as he only spoke to getting out of Florida after his wife's death.

Put on Your Investigator Hat!

Being the savvy investigator that I was, (wink, wink) I decided to check him out online.

The only Mark Rossi my google search found in Bedford, Kentucky looked nothing like my Mark. The guy was the wrong age, very scruffy looking and it was a mug shot.

Well, that can't be him. So, I checked in California where he supposedly first lived and I checked in Florida. A little voice in me said that he might not be who he says he is. But, I decided to play it out, see where it led. Maybe he was just a really great guy.

Gullible? Yes, a bit!

I asked him to send me photos of himself in Dubai (to see if he is really there). Also, I decided I wanted to re-read his online profile as I could not remember everything on it.

After all, if I wanted to be the last love of Mark Rossi, I better double-check on what he actually had said about himself. But, the profile had been removed from the online dating site. (Not a healthy sign.)

What Happened to Mark's Online Dating Profile?

Mark wrote:

"It was a Lovely day in Dubai and a pretty warm weather.

For your questions, I moved to Bedford to start a new life and create new memories with a new love and companion on a long term, someone i can love forever because i am commited to it and i am focusing on you alone now thats why took off my profile from match.com to ensure i can bring out the best of the relationship we have.

This busines has been lucrative since i started and thats why i invested a lot in this because its my last business trip before i retire to bring 16 cars in to sell at once to the dealership, i have two Porsche and four Ferrari among them , i wanna get into retirement because the income i get from this would establish me more and i would have agents to run this without leaving the house, my motive is to always be there for my companion, life is short m this is my last opportunity to be in love and i want to seize it .

I really dont have time for phone cameras now because this is business trip and i dont want jeopardize it for pleasure my next trip here has to be a vacation with my companion and lover and i see you as the one to occupy that position."

Mark is pretty smooth, isn't he?

The next day, I had notice of a security breach on my iCloud account and I had to reset the code. (Never really sure whether he had anything to do with this or not.)

The emails and text messages continued with romantic language and details of how the trip was going, etc. Then, the news! Mark was not going to fly home from Dubai, but instead was going to fly right into Kansas City.

Mark was Flying in to See Me!

He wrote:

"My One and Only, I am about to sleep here. Tomorrow will be a long day for me I have to get every paper work cleared and have things back on track for the full release of all my shipments so i get to deal with the dealership that buys them before leaving for the states, can't wait as it's been a long week already.

I think of spending alot of time with you when I get back to town and holding you so close to me. Whenever you think of me, please know that no matter how many miles separate us or how much of our lives comes between us we would have many lovely times and fond memories.

Even though we're apart, this will not be the end of our commitment until i meet you and i fell you in my arms.

Just always remember that I really adore you already and I want you to be part of me and me for you too as i can feel my lonely days are over.

When I first got the itinerary, I thought

Wow, he must be for real. He has booked a flight! Now what do I do?

I needed advice. I was excited that he might be for real but scared as to how to handle the situation if he actually showed up. Should I offer to pick him up at the airport? Should I suggest or book a hotel? Or, do I invite him to the house? What do I wear?

So, I contacted a couple of friends.

My sister-in-law recommended online dating and she has had considerable experience. So, I asked her.

She gave me good online dating advice.

NO, you do not pick him up at the airport. You meet in a public place.

No, you do not invite him to the house. You do not even tell him where you live when you meet through online dating. If he is an international business man, he can book his own hotel and get from the airport to the hotel on his own steam!

Why don't you meet someone local? If a guy sounds too good to be true, it is probably because he isn't real -- he's a fake!

It didn't sound very hospitable for someone who is traveling thousands of miles to see me, but I realized she made sense.

I contacted another friend with the good news and sent her a copy of the itinerary to prove that he was really coming to see me.

We agreed to meet over lunch the next day since this online dating encounter was heating up. My friend decided she needed to comb through my wardrobe to figure out whether I had anything suitable to wear. We are both excited and nervous. Then ...

The Bubble Burst!

The next morning, I awoke to an email from Mark:

"My love, I have been asleep all afternoon in stumble and distress. it had been a bad day. I don't know how to say it but i just have to say it as it would ease the burden.

I was robbed on my way to the seaport at gunpoint this morning, it was the worst experience i ever had. i am sorry I didn't mean to show you this so you don't feel bad or spoil your day but i just couldn't hold it in my heart, i had to email it to you. Please download and view document, its a police report of today's event."

I bet you can figure out where this is going? Right? Well within an hour or so, Mark texted me further about his plight and I offered him my prayers.

That is not what Mark wanted.

He texted "The paperwork would finalize the major dealings here and I would be back home as planned and right now I need 2900USD to solve this problem within the next 24hours. So far no one is able to help me out. I am devastated."

After some more back and forth he said:

"Honey is there anyway you can give me a short loan and when I return on Monday I would pay you back, I can double it for you. I feel so ashamed of myself asking you. I never wanna creat a wrong impression. I just wanna get out of this mess. Deadline got me so worried."

What a load of crap!

I asked him why he didn't just call his bank and get them to wire the funds to him. And, how could it be that he, an international business entrepreneur, had no one at his age of 62 who he could call besides a lady he had never even met? He had an answer for everything.

I told him I would have to think about that.

It took me about a minute to decide.

That was it. Mark had finally revealed the real reason that he had contacted me thru online dating in the first place. The gig was up. He called a few more times, but I did not take the calls. And my wardrobe make over could wait. The take away is this --

5 Online Dating Lessons:

You need to meet someone in person, if you want to have any hope of knowing who they are. Otherwise, you only know what the online dating profile says and what they want you to know. a) They might still be hiding something that would be very obvious if you were to meet them in person. b) Some people have long distance relationships with what turns out to be a fantasy. The person is not what they think.

Do a little research to find out about a person who might make a potential match from an online dating service as soon as you have a name. Try doing a search on your own name. It is surprising how much you can find out yourself that is actually out there and available if someone searches for it. a) Although it never occurred to me at the time, Mark Rossi probably was the guy in the mug shot. I just had never in my wildest dreams guessed that someone would go to the lengths that he did to perpetrate a fraud. b) The flight itinerary looked authentic at first glance. Reading it more carefully, KNS is not the symbol for Kansas City International. The symbol is MCI. When I checked the flight numbers through the airline, they do not exist. So, what looked real was just a fake. If Mark (or whoever he was) had used his skills for something positive there is no telling how successful he might have become.

Read the online dating safety tips below. There is something similar on most websites. The links below are safety tips from Match.com which are buried at the bottom of their website. You can click the links below and copy them for a quick reference: Online-safety-tips and Offline-safety-tips As you read the tips you can see that if I had followed them, I would have easily avoided the situation.

Be real when you put together an online profile. I was advised, for instance, not to list myself as a widow. But, to say that I was divorced instead. The premise is that gold diggers are looking for a recent widow because they think she probably has life insurance money. But I really would rather keep my radar up than start off by presenting myself as different from who I really am. I have met gentlemen that have shaved a few years off themselves in their profiles, probably this is true with ladies too. You don't want or need to tell them everything, but whatever you do say in the profile of yourself, I would try to be honest. You want to find someone who likes YOU -- not an image of someone you wish you were or someone you think is more desirable.

Have fun with online dating! Don't take yourself too seriously. If you are sitting home alone and would rather be in a relationship; if you want someone to share a meal or a drink with you, if you want to find your own "last love" go online and meet someone.

Top 6 book recommendations

This is hard cus I usually would rec people books based on what I kno they like/don’t like. I know some of my friends need a more action filled book where others don’t mind a slower plot line and more in depth characters

So I’ll just give some general recs which are probably the same as my favorites tbh

1. The Hating Game - it’s fun, an easy read, and you’ll highkey cry at the end because it’s so cute. Also it’s only one book so it’s easy to finish quickly

2. Shatter Me - this book flips all the YA cliches on you and the character development is just….. I have no words. I love the relationship themes- about how the person you should be with should make you your best self. I also love that the protagonist isn’t one of those “noo we shouldn’t kill this VERY HORRIBLE person bc that would make us just like them oooo” like, sry in my opinion some people deserve to die

3. The Lorien Legacies Series - it’s starts with I am Number Four. Even with a shitty author and more plot holes than I can count it’s still an amazing series with amazing characters??? It’s also a really good action-packed book so if you’re one of those people who doesn’t like slow books no worries. There’s like 7 main books tho and 20 something novellas so be prepared for a long saga

4. Life of Pi - I read this one in school and actually really liked it. It’s a very introspective survival story but the ending was crazy good. The movies pretty good too bUT DONT WATCH IT if you wanna read the book cus it will ruin the movie.

5. I gotta throw Red Queen on here obviously even tho I feel like most of you who follow me already have read it so- but if you haven’t pls do. Amazing characters and I feel like each book gets better and better. I love the parallels, the surprise twists, the heartbreaking epilogues. So yeah

I wanna say Hunger Games cus that’s still one of my #1 YA series but I feel like if you haven’t read the books at this point you’re not going to ever haha. And if you’ve seen the movies then the books are spoiled (but the book is better as usual)

6. The Darkest Minds - the ending of the first book just…… and then the actual storyline is so sad but so rewarding I cry thinking of all my children…. also I love this author’s style because it was very descriptive and full of imagery, but without being boring (if that makes sense)

my teeth hurts a bunch. im really scare that im gonna need surgery esp during this time. i dont want to go to the ER. i need to get meds but its pouring outside and i parked a decent place away. i actually love the rain. all the morbid things in life. someone told me everyone is born with a sense of happiness. i think i was born with a sense of sadness. idk what happened. i think i was a pretty happy kid. is it cause of the events in life that makes me so bitter. they were out of my control, its not the family i would have chose. but its mine and i love them very much. its not perfect but its love. i got to choose the friends that love me for who i am why do i still feel sad. i hate being stuck with my thoughts. tats why i love to work. when i work i dont think about anything else but the people that i am taking care of. thats i care about. thats my focus. their life in my hand. we really start playing god at one point. i dont wana work tomorrow . we all dread going to work now. its comforting knowing that when i go to work we all are struggling together and no one else understands the struggle other then us. none of my friends other then those in the medical field in the hospital understands how scary it is. theres no words that can describe and its so empowering how we all try to help each other. during such critical times. im going to be working 60 hrs .... and for the first time im dreading it. im so tired. i cant wait for my 6 days off next week starting thurs. i think im gonna go crazy but i really need it. i need a week off im going to burn out. i picked up alot of ot shifts to make money on the side. i also picked up a third per diem.

it raining really hard and i need to go to the pharmacy. im about to have the talk with ernest and at this time point after running the conversation in my head and running thru the scenarios. i feel like this is stupid and not a big deal anymore. maybe its all in my head. even though everyone had such a negative response. i feel like being the lawyer that he is, hes going to be defensive and be like thatss not what i meant. and maybe he will apologize but somewhere in side my of me i wanna give him a second chance, idk if its because im lonely, or i actually do like him. maybe cause im lonely. i should just end things. its a waste of time and maybe he has reached that conclusion too since we dont have much to talk about. i dont even know why he likes me . he says we have good chemistry. more like the sex is good and thats about it right. im sure he can find someone that will make him happy. i feel like hes too demanding for me. i cant keep up and i promise myself i would never be taken advantage of ever again. i always do this. i like them and they ask for whatever and i spoil them. i give them whatever they want. and then i feel bad when i dont deliver. thats just how i am. im not falling for it again. hes a smart guy. he’ll let me go. because he cant be the smaller person. hes the one that makes all the decision. but im not gonna back down. fuck that shit. i am independent, smart, i always figure it out. you either fuck with me and follw my rules, if not then fuck off .

i made up my mind, just lord jesus give me the strength to follow thru. im getting to old to be fucking around. i want a boyfriend. i want the real deal. im not perfect but im ready for someone. i know i am. im reading a book about relationships and self help books. i took therapy to help me undersand my brain a little more. im trying here what more do you want from me.

i wanna sit in paris with my love and just talk about how i would have never guess ed life would be so kind to me. to let me meet someone like him. i guess i have an unrealistic understanding of love. likes its this grandiose feeling. imma be that single crazy aunt at everyones wedding. minding my own business.

I know there are other factors such as smokers/obese people, lawsuits, and people who don't pay their bills. But i'm wondering if insurance companies are one of the biggest reasons to blame for the ridiculously high cost of medical services and equipment? The reason I wonder is because the prices of medical care are so ridiculously high, but it seems like doctors can simply charge any price they want, no matter how ridiculous, because the insurance company will simply pay it. Unlike if someone was actually paying out of pocket and would actually say your out of your mind for charging that much, you won't get my business . I mean, seriously, even if doctors charged $70 per hour, thats still a high wage for them, and it wouldn't be too unreasonable for an hour of medical work, yet I hear of doctors performing various simple procedures that take like 5-15 minutes and charging hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars. Same thing with medical equipment. It seems any device classified as a piece of medical equipment sells for 10 times what it should reasonably cost to make it. Any level headed person would say they are insane for charging that much. But insurance companies simply pay it, and pass the cost on to the people. Making it so the people are basically getting ripped off through no choice of their own. And making it so people who don't have insurance simply cannot afford to have any care. At fault driver's car insurance won't pay for my damages!?

Hey guys and gals, My wife was in a car accident on 10/8 driving our truck with liability only insurance (IE: not full coverage because the truck is only worth ~$3000 and it's paid for). She was turning right and had slowed down to turn (with her turn signal on) when a speeding truck slammed into the van behind her, ramming the van in to our truck. The police filed a report, in which the driver of the speeding truck (an 18 year old kid, that had just left his house less than 1/4 mile away) was determined to be at fault. It is worth note that this happened in front of two different auto body shops, and within sight of the house the at fault driver had just left. Their insurance company, state farm, finally contacted us on 11/8 after not returning our phone calls for nearly two weeks saying they had determined he was in fact at fault and would send an adjuster the following Monday. He came, inspected the truck, determined it was repairable, then said we would hear from their office later that day. When they called they told us the damage was more than 75% of the vehicles worth so it was considered total and they would send the required paperwork to my email address to begin payment. Within 3 hours, the claim agent we had talked to the previous Friday said an owner of one of the auto shops had came forward (all of a sudden, no mention of a witness before) and that he had a notarized statement saying the van struck our vehicle before the truck struck the van. The insurance company now will not pay us for the damages. We tried to call the witness and get a copy of his report because State Farm would not give us the copy. Then we called the other auto body shop and both the owner and one of his employees both seen the accident and say that the truck was at fault, and the owner overheard the driver say specifically that it was his fault. When we bring this to the agents attention, she claims this is not evidence because they know the at fault driver. We found out that the first witness also knows the driver, but can't prove it. Ours is a small town, you don't have neighbors that you don't know or speak to. It seems we are at an impasse, and I have been without a truck for nearly 6 weeks. What should I do in this instance? Get an attorney? Our insurance agency is adamant about not intervening since we did not have full coverage insurance. It may be worth noting that my wife has had back and neck pain since the accident and went to the hospital the day of the accident, the family doctor twice since, and has an appointment with a chiropractor next week (all of which our insurance has paid for.)""
